R S Wolf & The Silver Store is a unique jeweller where you can find an extensive range of beautiful jewellery including a wide variety of gold, silver and platinum pieces along with the unusual and stunning Alchemy range. The style of Roger and his team is impeccable, and they are more than happy to make sure yours is too. If your perfect piece is in the shop, they are sure to find it for you. Tucked into the corner is The Art Gallery, run by local artist Tom Stephenson - everything from local scenery to his pun-filled sheep collection, part of The Whimsical World of Thomas Joseph. Tom can often be found in his gallery working on his latest piece and is always happy to share a bit of his knowledge on any of his art. Oh, and don’t worry if your knock to the door is answered with a bark, that’s just Blue, the ‘shop manager’. Sharing the main front building is JAVART and The Woolworx. JAVART provides an eclectic mix of homeware and giftware where you can easily find that perfect present. As only one of four Annie Sloan Chalk Paint stockists in Northern Ireland, Alison is full of experience and ready assist with your latest upcycle project.

also offers a candle vessel refill service so don’t feel like you have to throw out your favourite jar when the candle is finished; just bring it in to Nikki to get a lovely new candle poured in. Also situated off the garden is Bluebird Counselling NI. Everyone has good days and bad days, but if the bad days start to outweigh the good, don’t struggle by yourself. Joanne offers a wide range of services to help you navigate the trials and troubles of day-today life. For a full list of her services, visit her profile page – www. counselling-directory.org.uk/counsellors/joanne-hudson. Covering everything from the classics to local authors to comic books, The Secret Bookshelf is nestled at the bottom of the path. With a selection of new and pre-loved books, literary gifts, and local artwork, it is a wonderful place to spend the afternoon browsing. Not finding what you want? Don’t worry! Speak to Chris and Jo to see what magic they can work to source the title you need. They also host regular writing classes, frequently have local authors in for a chat and a reading, various children’s events

Next door you’ll find The Woolworx, where Joanne offers a range of different wools: from Aran to 4ply, and colours to suit everyone. She also stocks a range of knitting and crochet accessories, beautiful buttons, hooks, stitch holders, pattern books, the list goes on and on. She also hosts a variety of classes, catering to crochet queens and knitters at all levels of experience (rumour has it there’s tea and buns!). Continue through to the back garden and you will find our THREE new arrivals this year. First we had @7 Bistro/Café open the doors; Simon and partner Jacqueline worked tirelessly for months overhauling the old unit and transforming it into a chic and cheerful bistro/café. Thanks to Jacqueline and her fabulous front-of-house team, you will be welcomed with a warm, friendly atmosphere and classic calming colours throughout. The ever-suave Simon has made sure to centre his well-rounded menu around locally sourced produce, with everything cooked fresh to order daily – from a delicious potato bread stack, to freshly made noodle dishes or a good ‘aul burger to fill you up! With an ever changing but always mouthwatering weekend special, a lovely patio area, and the rumour of late-night steak nights starting this month, they are one to try when you’re in the area. The second wonderful new addition is Heel Within Holistic Therapy, Carrickfergus. This award-winning salon is run by the lovely Lisa and her aim is whole body healing. Many holistic therapists will aim at achieving healing through nurturing all four aspects of the body: the mind, the body, the spirit and the emotions. Lisa offers a range of treatments including reflexology, meditation, massage and reiki, to name just a few, with the aim of helping you achieve optimal whole body health and wellness. She is also very community focused, hosting baby massage classes, general meditation classes and wellness coffee mornings, all with the aim of bringing people together to support themmselves and each other. Check out the full range of treatments she offers at heelwithintherapy.booksy.com Our final new arrival only opened its doors last month – Copperwood Candle Company. Both shop and factory, Nikki makes all her products in-house. Her sustainably-made wax is 100% vegan; made from rapeseed and coconut, it also has a lower melting point compared to other similar products on the market, meaning they are compatible with all electric burners and are more eco-friendly as they require less energy to melt. As much as possible, Nikki has also made sure to source her ingredients locally, making sure to support the local business community. She

like interactive storytelling, and even live readings of poetry most Mondays; make sure to follow their socials for the latest news. Completing our rear courtyard, we have Lee, Lynn and team in The Talking Shop. Set up by Positive Carrickfergus with the aim of hosting multiple projects, exploring the future of Carrickfergus with the people who live here. Some examples of their worthy projects are the opening of Carrick Greengrocers, owned by the community for the community, and the Around The Town Musical Festival which hosted 21 events across 9 days, in 9 different venues around the town, with over 150 local artists performing; a fantastic boost for the town and hopefully an annual event moving forwards after the success of this year. The Talking Shop invites innovative thinking and imagination, while providing an encouraging space for community-orientated ideas and experiments. We are also very excited to be hosting The Esme Edit, a high quality, affordable clothing boutique. After a lifelong passion for fashion, Rachel took the leap with The Esme Edit in March earlier this year, starting with pop-up shops around the town and now located with us, opening every Saturday. Her boutique offers a lovely selection of clothes, shoes, handbags and hair accessories. Her clothing range (some of which is actually featured on the front cover) covers casual to eye-catching occasion wear, all made with high quality fabrics and fastenings. And if you aren’t sure what you’re looking for, chat to Rachel. With her keen eye for fashion and her friendly, bubbly personality, she’s almost guaranteed to find you exactly the right outfit. Find her on socials or at theesmeedit.com

EDITOR’S LETTER

Going for Gold

EDITOR: Christopher Sherry DEPUTY EDITOR: Joanne Harkness EDITORIAL MANAGER: James Sherry

W

e may not have had the weather we hoped for this summer but we were more than compensated with a glorious season of sport. The Euros, the GAA All-Ireland finals, the Olympics and now the Paralympic Games; all good reasons to stay indoors out of the rain. Ahead of the 2024 Olympic Games few could have predicted, or even hoped, that Northern Ireland’s athletes would perform at such a high level. For the record, their medal tally in Paris was four gold, a silver and two bronze. Before these games, only three athletes from Northern Ireland had ever won an Olympic Gold Medal. We have every right to be proud of their achievements, especially given our small population. I watched Daniel Wiffen win gold in the 800-metre freestyle in the pool and Rhys McClenaghan do likewise in the men’s pommel horse final. Both were incredible performances. I had the pleasure of meeting Rhys at the 2021 Ulster Tatler Awards and he is a lovely guy: down-to-earth and self-effacing. You couldn’t wish success to come to a nicer person. Our victories are all the more impressive when you consider the facilities and resources available to athletes from countries such as the USA and China. As I write, the Paralympics are now well underway and, once again, the athletes are a joy to watch.

LIFE & TIMES EDITED BY KATHY CLUGSTON

Kathy Clugston is a freelance radio presenter. She chairs the long-running BBC Radio 4 programme ‘Gardeners’ Question Time’ and presents the weekly entertainment show ‘The Ticket’ on BBC Radio Ulster.

Outstanding Octogenarians This month, Kathy discusses the inspiring effect octogenarians have had on her. When Bangor-based duo The Darkling Air - singer & lyricist Rachel McCarthy and composer Michael Keeney - played live on The Ticket a few weeks ago they performed a track from their 2019 album Ancestor called Octogenarian Mermaid, a song so beautiful it moved one of our other guests to tears. The video too is wonderful – filmed off the Bangor coast with three sea swimmers, including real-life octogenarian Roberta Hagan. Two other 80-year-olds have had a profound effect on me this month. The first is Mary Robinson, who became the first woman to be elected President of Ireland in 1990. She received the backing of many Irish women who voted for the first time, some in defiance of their husbands. In her acceptance speech, Mary memorably thanked those who “instead of rocking the cradle, rocked the system.” She has since fulfilled several roles at the United Nations and currently chairs The Elders, a group of world leaders brought together by Nelson Mandela in 2007 to work for peace, justice, human rights and a sustainable planet. I was invited to interview Mary at a preview screening at the QFT in Belfast of a new documentary about her life and work by the Irish filmmaker Aoife Kelleher. To everyone’s delight Mary was there to watch the film with us and when the time came for questions, she couldn’t wait to get the past out of the way and focus on her current work in the field of climate justice. This is a woman on a mission: to highlight the disproportionate effect of climate change on the world’s poorest people, women in particular. She argues that “a feminist solution” is the key to our gravest problems and travels the world meeting and inspiring young climate activists. Her energy and commitment are breathtaking and we sat - and ultimately rose to our feet - in awe of her. The film Mrs Robinson came out on 23rd August. Do see it if you can. Inspiration of the creative kind came from Elisabeth Jupp, a retired solicitor and judge of the Upper Tribunal, whom I first met in her capacity as mother of the actor and comedian Miles Jupp. I used to work alongside Miles on Radio 4’s The News Quiz and when I interviewed him recently he told me his mum had turned 80 this year and received as a birthday gift a bound collection of some of the poems she has written over her lifetime. I asked if I could see a copy, which was not really intended for public consumption but for her grandchildren, who she hopes, as they grow up, will find the poems “shed a little light on my interests and insights over my octave of decades and hint at who I have been”. Both I and my mum - herself an engaged and engaging octogenarian - were deeply touched by the memories and reflections contained within it. Elisabeth has kindly given me permission to share a poem here.

THIS MONTH’S OBSESSIONS

THE LIGHT OF AMSTERDAM – 2012 novel by the Co. Down author and retired teacher David Park, about whom I’m ashamed to say I knew little before being given this book. It’s set in Amsterdam where a divorced father and his teenage son, a hen party and a middle-aged couple converge. The characters are brilliantly written; I will definitely be reading more of Park’s work. HIDDEN BRAIN – A US podcast that uses science to explore the patterns that drive human behaviour and relationships. It’s hosted by 20

the journalist Shankar Vedantam, who has a soothing voice and manner (underestimated qualities in a host). Recent episodes have discussed extremism, being alone and self-importance. NUTRITIONAL YEAST – Flakes of deactivated baker’s yeast don’t sound particularly appetising but they add a nutty, cheesy flavour to stews, soups and sauces. A good source of protein and B vitamins, and an alternative to parmesan for vegans. Available in health food shops and bigger supermarkets.

Clogher Valley RFC AIL Men’s 1st Team

CELEBRATING Clogher Valley Rugby Football Club are celebrating their 35th season as a crosscommunity charitable organisation, formed in 1990. They are based just outside the rural village of Fivemiletown in County Tyrone, in an area known to the local community as ‘The Cran’. They are a sports club with over 300 members, a huge voluntary team and the largest supporter base locally. With 17 different teams across the five sections, Clogher Valley RFC are continually engaging with the local community, providing recreation opportunities and amateur sport. The club has reaped success over recent years, most recently with their 1st XV team winning the All Ireland League Division 2C following their first year playing at All Ireland level. This achievement allowed them to progress to Division 2B for the upcoming 2024 / 2025 season. The Women’s section of the club is growing at a fast rate, followed by the Youth, Minis and Rugbees. The 1st XV team, captained by Mr Paul Armstrong, also won the Ulster Senior

35

Shield in April 2024 for the first time in history, and could only be described as “the icing on the cake for a tremendous season”. Lead by Mr Philip Hopper, the 2nd XV had a challenging year in the Ulster League with a higher standard of rugby coming against them, however, credit is due for their commitment where injuries meant the team changed week on week. The Women’s senior team enjoyed their second season after forming and won their league which was a testament to their progress over the last year. They had the opportunity to play at the Kingspan Stadium in Belfast in the final of the Suzanne Fleming Cup, but unfortunately lost out to Banbridge. The Youth section saw success with all three Girls’ teams (U14, U16 and U18’s) reaching their respective cup and shield semi-finals, and the U14 Girls’ finished second place in their league. The U14 Boys’ reached their semi-finals and finished third place in their league, the U16 Boys’ got through to the quarterfinals of the Shield and the U18 Boys’ finished second place in their league and were finalists in the provincial league.

YEARS

As one of the youngest clubs in the region, Clogher Valley RFC has equally as much success off the field as they do on it, with their thriving community support that is admired by clubs across Ulster and afar. Aside from rugby related activities, the Club organises a host of different events for all the family to enjoy. These include Mud Runs, Tractor Runs, Recruitment Fairs, Themed Parties, Children’s Fun Days, BBQs and much more. This could not be made possible without the support of their generous sponsors, many of who renew their contributions year-on-year, making a lot of events an annual success. Club President Richard Haire commented, “I cannot highlight enough the tremendous efforts, work and time commitments that our members and volunteers give to our Club. Each and every player, coach, referee, manager, volunteer, sponsor and supporter contributes to the success of this club and has shaped it to what it is today. The work that goes on behind the scenes is unimaginable and everyone does it with such passion and a determination to see the club grow.”

2023 saw the official opening of the Clogher Valley RFC Community Hub at ‘The Cran’. This came after years of planning and fundraising and has been a huge success since it first opened in October 2023. In the space of a year, there have been many prematch receptions, breakfast and coffee mornings, BBQs and private functions held in the building, open to the entire community. Mark Henderson, Chairperson of the Executive Committee, said, “It has been a privilege to host clubs from across the province and further afield to our new facility, and it is thanks to the volunteers in the kitchen who have catered for large crowds throughout the season.” The club has celebrated a lot of success in the last season, and many awards were achieved for different reasons. Clogher Valley RFC were the proud winners of the prestigious ‘Guinness Rugby Writer’s Ireland Club of the Year 2023’, the ‘Ulster Rugby Club of the Year

Youth Boys

2023’ award, ‘Best Use of Social Media in Charity for 2022’ award and were a finalist for the ‘Impartial Reporter Club of the Year 2023’ award. 1st XV players Ewan Haire and Callum Smyton were both finalists for the ‘All Ireland League Division 2C Player of the Year 2023’ award, and Callum was the proud winner of the title.

Known across the province for the club with the highest number of supporters, Clogher Valley RFC proved this statement with the best travelling support across Ireland in the 2023 / 2024 league. Style & Sophistication Interiors and architecture by Clarke & Whiteman to produce a beautiful home, where the old is seamlessly blended with the new. Clarke and Whiteman were asked to extend and completely renovate a Georgian mid-terrace house in Belfast. This included fitting out the complete interior of this family home, from concept to completion, for our client. The house had many beautiful original features, the character of which we needed to respect and conserve. Combining our architectural and interior design skills, we took our time to understand and embrace all of the client’s needs and design ideas.

A D V E R T O R I A L

Timeless character with a modern luxurious design touch was the aim. Dampness throughout and a small kitchen necessitated a new kitchen within the rear walled garden and the creation of a more modern living area attached to the high-ceilinged front reception rooms. Taking the rear return into consideration, we created a small enclosed garden and formed a new utility space to allow light to

59

penetrate through to the rear of the building. The ceiling heights were lifted in the rear return at groundfloor level in order to let light penetrate through the building and an all-glass link stair was introduced into the return at first floor to access the fourth bedroom. A heritage-style rooflight was introduced over the new kitchen extension and the kitchen, designed by Canavan’s to incorporate solid quartzite

A D V E R T O R I A L

worktops, walnut and hand -finished joinery in a subtle palette, complemented the French limestone flooring throughout the extension and rear. The main reception rooms were fitted with storage and the existing floors were refurbished

and finished with antique rugs. Utilising the subtle tones and finishes of Farrow and Ball paints, we specified schemes to enhance the original cornicing, woodwork and refurbished shuttered bay windows. The main hall received a new bespoke mosaiced tiled floor in keeping with the building’s character and the stair was carpeted with a wool runner. Antiques by Aquired add a touch of history to the spaces. A Cordonne mural was used in the main bathroom together with a freestanding bath, modern walk-in shower and fittings from Thomas Crapper. Furniture from Soho Home and a magnificent chandelier from Ochre set the scene in the master bedroom, where a deep navy and gold colour scheme highlighted the original detailing. Curtains by Rathgael Furnishings completed the window dressings in sophisticated silks and linens.

We recognise the individuality of each project, hence our company ethos evolved to include an aspect of GENIUS LOCI (meaning ‘Spirit of Place’) in everything we do. Working with some of the biggest hotel groups for many years, we have designed all facets of hotel projects including work for Clontarf Castle, Crowne Plaza Hotels at Northwood and Blanchardstown, Slieve Russell, Jurys, Maldron and other independent hotels. Simply, through interpretive inclusion of specific historical, physical or conceptual elements we aim to respectfully capture the intangible atmosphere unique to each location – epitomised in our social media hashtag – #designwithprovenance How we do it We begin first and foremost with our clients, whereby we intuitively listen and observe to discern their highest expectations. With the belief that successful design can transform an ordinary experience into an extraordinary one, we elevate our clients’ ambitions to devise ‘humancentred’, functional and aesthetically outstanding spaces that will endure. Understanding the importance of collaboration, we have established strong relationships with the highest quality tradespeople and suppliers who support us in realising our design solutions. INTERVIEW

Jane Hardy is a feature writer who has interviewed a few of the big names from Arlene Foster to Mrs Thatcher. BY JANE HARDY

STILL STANDING Malachi Cush talks to Jane Hardy about faith, hats and how music helps with life’s challenges.

W

hen tragedy or near tragedy strikes, people react in different ways. Some try to find good in the horror, maybe starting a charity or sharing their experience to help others. Singer songwriter, Malachi Cush, turned to music (although not in the way you’d expect) after a serious accident which nearly cost him his voice. He didn’t write songs about the experience but hit on the idea of a radio series examining the way music can help in extremis, titled Healing Sounds. We meet in the Society of Vincent de Paul HQ on the Antrim Road. Cush is there because he has just been made the first Northern ambassador for the charity. Detouring via the excellent shop, he says he declines the idea of trying on one of the men’s hats. “My wife won’t let me wear a hat, she just laughs.” He picks up one or two of the fab women’s sandals for a laugh, then settles down to being photographed like the professional he is. Initially, when SVP approached Cush he says he felt “unworthy” but grew to like the idea of helping the charity tackle poverty. “I feel honoured to have been asked.” Now Malachi Cush reveals that his new job is a good fit as he is finishing his sixth year of studying theology at Maynooth University. Normally this would lead to the priesthood but not in this case, as Cush is happily married to Claire. “We’ve known each other since school and looked at each other with interest before acting on it,” he says with his trademark smile. “People ask me why I’ve done this theology course, what I’ll do with it and I don’t know, 67

but felt a kind of calling to do this and learn more about faith, about world religions.” We touch on multiculturalism and faith and the challenge in today’s society. Cush is a fascinating conversationalist, as at ease when discussing country music as the core ethics of Christianity. When Malachi Cush had his terrible accident, faith helped him cope with an event that came out of nowhere. “I was getting a strimmer repaired at a local hardware shop before doing some gardening. We were putting it in the car boot when we were hit by a car on the road that was out of control. My car was moved two spaces along by the impact.” After being airlifted to the Royal Victoria Hospital, where he initially spent three weeks before two bouts of surgery, Cush was found to have significant leg injuries, his chin had been opened and the key muscles round his vocal cords stretched. For a noted singer, this was serious. In hospital, Cush admits the emotion of the situation overcame him. “I was washed by nurses, a young man, and thought, ‘what is happening?’ I cried and a nurse noticed – I don’t know her name – and asked whether I wanted to be wheeled down to Mass.” That’s what they did and Malachi Cush found the service affecting, but helpful. He shares an anecdote about going to rehab and spotting a woman next to him doing work on her prosthetic leg. They were, however, both on their legs, upright, and the music at that point in the hospital was appropriately enough Elton John’s ‘I’m Still Standing’. “We looked at one another and smiled.”

INTERVIEW

People ask me why I’ve done this theology course, what I’ll do with it and I don’t know, but felt a kind of calling to do this and learn more about faith, about world religions. In a way, spreading that moment of cheer and optimism is what he tries to do via Healing Sounds. Celebrities open up about their worst experience and outline the music that enabled them to move forward. Pamela Ballantine is in the new show, talking about her breast cancer journey. “She’s amazing and was the one who hugged and greeted me – she’d interviewed me – when I first joined UTV, presenting the magazine programme.” Worryingly, Ballantine, as she has mentioned, had no cancer symptoms but needed treatment for the disease. Her musical healing choices included Pink Floyd’s Time. Noel Cunningham, doyen of cruise ships and RTE presenter, talked about his alcoholism and the fear he felt entering his first Alcoholics Anonymous meeting. Musically, it was show tunes and upbeat stuff. Other episodes involve singer/ songwriter Sandy Kelly who lost her sister to suicide and has a disabled child. Her favourite music is pop. You have to wonder what music kept Malachi Cush going in the darkest days. He cites the beautiful, uplifting Pie Jesu. “I think Andrea Bocelli’s version, it’s so good.” And is a fan of James Taylor and Neil Diamond, but in terms of his own healing soundtrack, religion is the theme. “So songs which underline God’s presence.” As well as the new radio series, Cush has a spanking new album out, Songs for the Soul II. He plays me a track which is a duet with a friend and fellow musician. “He’s a great baritone, and it reminds me of a kind of duet with my father.” Cush’s dad passed away, or finished his earthly journey, eighteen months ago. “I still talk to him every day,” the singer confides. Cush started out in traditional music with his family but since then has branched out and he has worked with the best. Cush recalls a phone call he answered to hear a man saying it was Phil Coulter on the line. “’Yeah, right,’ I said, but it actually was Phil Coulter. Then I ran to tell my wife he’d called, asking me to work with him, it was amazing that the man who’d produced all those songs, won Eurovision… They produced an album titled Kindred Spirits and Coulter is a now a friend who stays over at the Cush family home in County Tyrone. Cush has also produced music with June Carter Cash, sister of Johnny. He admits that hanging out with her in Nashville, visiting the Cash homestead “where they grew up”, visiting the graves of her brother and parents, was the stuff of which memories are made.

68

We talk some more about music, and Malachi Cush agrees enthusiastically with the saying of Victorian critic Walter Pater that “all art aspires to the condition of music”. “Yes, it’s open to everyone, there are no barriers,” he adds. Cush says that he is surprised by his fame and career. “I wanted to be a plumber.” He adds that he is comfortable in his own skin these days, knows where he’s going. Things are Cush-ti, to quote Del Boy. ‘Healing Sounds With Malachi Cush’ is on RTE Radio 1 - it started on 16th August and runs to 20th September.

Goodbye, Brat Summer Forget about brat summer! Social media heavyweights have dictated that this season it’s all about being DEMURE! In essence, not doing too much (my husband says I do this well). If you’ve spent even a little time on social media this summer, you’ve probably seen that meme. You know, the slime green squares and people proudly calling themselves brats. Come again? Some of us completely missed having a brat summer while we were busy waiting for the rain to stop! Confused? Let me explain: having a brat summer was all about embracing chaos, leaning into your messy side, and welcoming your wild side, spawned from the Charli XCX album, Brat. Now it’s all about being demure, and if you’ve really gotten the hang of it, being very demure, very mindful, and very cutesy. Aka behaving modestly, living your life quietly, and acting in a way that doesn’t draw attention to yourself – all of this while posting daily on social media about your chosen demure activities! You couldn’t make it up! 70

Travelling abroad for dental treatment:

ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW An increasing number of people from this part of the world are travelling abroad to undertake lower-cost dental treatments which they could not otherwise afford at home. We have all, however, heard the warnings around the risks involved in availing of such services far from home. If you are thinking about going abroad for dental work, it is essential that you consider a range of factors other than just cost e.g. a clinic’s reputation with other overseas patients, the qualifications of the practitioners, your rights and protections in the country of treatment should something go wrong. Before committing to treatment, you must receive a fully costed treatment plan including information on any risks associated with the treatment and details of follow-up care. Kreativ Dental Clinic in Budapest, Hungary has been treating patients from Ireland and around the world for over 20 years. Mary Flanagan, the clinic’s representative in Ireland, outlined that the clinic has an expert team of dental specialists offering high-quality care using state-of-the-art technology. They have a proven track record when it comes to patient safety and quality of treatment and, importantly, there is an after-care service in Ireland. Planning for overseas treatment can take some time and effort but it is crucial that you get the right advice and support beforehand. Ideally, speak to someone who has travelled to the clinic before; Mary Flanagan of Kreativ Dental Clinic is a former patient herself and will happily share her experiences and answer any questions. The clinic offers a free consultation, including an OPG X-ray and a full breakdown of the treatment plan. It is then your decision if you wish to proceed with treatment or not.

PROMOTIONAL PROFILE

Ulster Tatler speaks to Kara-Lyn Macaulay from Karan Francis Health & Beauty When was your business first established and what inspired you to get into this sector? I established Karan Francis Moira in 2006 after completing my CIDESCO Diploma in Beauty Therapy in 2002 at the Roberta Meechan College of Beauty. Already a business studies graduate, the opportunity arose to start my own business in Moira and it was the best decision I’ve ever made! I have always had an interest in skincare; at age 10 I suffered significant facial burns in an accident. I spent one week in the burns unit and I distinctly remember the doctor telling me how lucky I was to have oily/ swarthy skin; had my skin been dry or sensitive I would have been scarred for life. That was so intriguing to me as a child and it’s a comment that obviously sparked my lifetime interest in skin. What do you love most about your job? I love giving my clients skin and body confidence, whether it’s through skincare treatments, hair removal or advanced cosmetic procedures. As a skincare therapist, I definitely get a buzz when my clients tell me how amazing their skin feels or looks, or how they’ve had compliments on it, or even gained the confidence to go make-up free. It’s a pleasure to have such a rewarding job where every day I get to help people look and feel better, reaching their healthy skin goals. What sets your business apart from the rest? At Karan Francis we have an amazing team of exceptionally qualified and experienced therapists, several of whom have been with me for many years. We believe in the mantra of karma: we treat our clients as we would like to be treated, going above and beyond to exceed our clients’ needs. What services do you offer? We are a full-service salon, specialising in advanced skincare treatments such as micro-needling, advanced cosmetic procedures and skin peels. Whilst offering a full menu of beauty, holistic and massage therapies, our clients love our bespoke twin pedicure suite as an opportunity to meet with friends and family while enjoying a luxury pedicure and afternoon tea from RARE Grazing NI.

What are the most popular treatments at present; are there current trends in beauty and skincare? The most recent addition to our treatment menu is Advanced Cosmetic Blemish Removal, treating skin lesions, skin tags and thread veins and it is hugely popular. We definitely see an appetite for advanced treatments with Pro Micro-needling being one of our most booked facial treatments. 2024 will see Exosome therapy hit the professional skincare market, a treatment containing growth factor, proteins and other molecules that promote cellular regeneration and communication, most useful in the treatment of aging skin, inflammation and scarring, to name a few – a very exciting development for professional skincare therapists; watch this space! What has been your career highlight to date? I’ve been doing this for over 20 years so there have been a lot of career highlights, awards and recognitions I am proud of. I think the biggest one to date is the completion of our renovation in spring 2023, more than doubling our size, offering 10 new treatment areas and a custom-built twin pedicure suite. In true family-run business style, my husband completed all plumbing and tiling, whilst I grouted, built furniture and nursed two children with chicken pox, managed the renovation project and ran the business – we are never ever moving again! Tears and tantrums but it was all worth it as I now have the salon of my dreams. What is your advice for anyone looking to start a career in the beauty industry? Beauty therapy is the most rewarding career in terms of job satisfaction. I would advise anyone with a passion for beauty to get qualified, start building a portfolio of their work and get as much hands-on

work experience as possible. Seek out a reputable salon nearby and get involved with their business, offer to work reception, have treatments there, experience treatments everywhere you travel to and build a vision of the type of therapist you want to become and practise, practise, practise. “We are what we repeatedly do.”

For a walk in ‘FLOAT’ out experience Bodyzonz is a Complementary Health Studio based in Camerons Retail Store, Ballymena, on the 4th floor. Ulster Tatler speaks to owner, Marlene Marcus. What services and treatments do you offer? Bodyzonz offers a range of rejuvenating therapies, including reflexology, body massage, and Indian head massage. We also offer facial treatments using the award-winning Tropic skincare products, which are organic, chemical, and paraben-free. How did you get into this sector? Has it always been something you were passionate about? I have always been interested in health and well-being. As a health care worker, I loved supporting and caring for my patients, but I wanted to offer more. So, I trained as a reflexologist, and it went from there. I get absolute satisfaction from helping my clients achieve better health and well-being. I have noticed in recent years how clients are responding to caring for their health and the well-being of their families. Research into how reflexology affects the body is ongoing, and as a result, many people are interested in learning more about this ancient therapy. What type of people would benefit from coming to Bodyzonz? My clients are of all ages, and many suffer from some health issues and stresses. Reflexology helps the body relax; with the everincreasing stress levels in our daily lives, it is necessary to recognise the detrimental effect this can have on the body.

Contact Marlene for skincare advice.

What do you love most about your business? Job satisfaction is vital to me. It gives me great joy to spend time with my clients, offer the support they require, and know that deep relaxation releases tension, provides a sense of well-being, and improves sleep. I encourage my clients to be active, keep hydrated, and breathe deeply.

Why is it important for people to avail of these treatments, and how often should we consider getting them? It is more important now than ever for people to look after their health, as life has many stresses, and getting good healthcare has become more complex. People generally seek ways to achieve a better quality of life. Holistic practitioners, like me, support the whole person and assist in promoting well-being. It is beneficial to have treatments carried out regularly. Have you offered any new services recently? Yes. I offer facials and advice on using organic, chemical, and paraben-free skincare products, which have proved very popular. We are all becoming more aware of what we put on our skin to benefit our health. Due to the increase in cancer, people are concerned about chemicals and preservatives. Tropic skincare also supports our planet, which motivates not just myself but my clients as well. Do any particular testimonials or customer feedback stand out? Yes, I have added some testimonials; it gives me great satisfaction that my service is appreciated and supports my belief in my holistic work. TESTIMONIALS:

“I have been visiting Marlene’s clinic ‘Bodyzonz’ twice monthly for the past year. The results I have experienced have been truly remarkable. I had suffered from sciatica and severe neck pain for 30 years, consulting with numerous physios and masseurs. As I was experiencing so much pain, I was referred to a spinal surgeon who advised fusing L5&L4 discs and burning nerve endings without guaranteeing success. I declined his very kind offer. That was four years ago; I just lived with the pain. Marlene’s firm yet gentle manipulation, compassion, patience, and kindness have improved my mobility by at least 80%. I’m enjoying my newfound freedom of movement with much less pain. This has enhanced my general mental and physical well-being. I will always be indebted to Marlene.” D.N “I attend Bodyzonz for regular appointments with Marlene. My body feels rejuvenated, and I feel like a new person! Marlene is a very professional and experienced therapist who provides care and support for her clients. I really look forward to receiving my relaxing treatments in her luxurious and beautiful treatment room. I highly recommend treating yourself or someone you love to a walk-in float-out experience. I am already looking forward to my next visit.” Hazel

Female Exclusive Gym in Moira Ulster Tatler speaks to Emma Spiers from GRL Health and Fitness.

and further, with our online coaching platform. How important do you think it is for women to join a gym like GRL, especially when everyone has such busy lives? We know attending the gym or getting involved with any form of exercise is so important for mental and physical health. We pride ourselves in not just being a ‘gym’, but a sanctuary for women who have such heavy work and life demands, which is why our warm and welcoming atmosphere, approachable and friendly members and coaches, make GRL so encouraging to attend, even when life is very busy! Tell me about GRL Health and Fitness, when did it first open, what does it offer and what makes it special? GRL first began in July 2019, with myself coaching exclusively women in person before lockdown hit and we moved everything online. I was a one-woman band until I opened the gym in October 2020, offering a range of services including standard memberships for ladies of all ages to train in a safe and comfortable environment, in their own time. In addition to this, we offer online coaching, also known as ‘100 Day Slay’, and semi-private coaching, which is our in-person coaching service. With opening our doors, this provided new employment opportunities for women who were like-minded in my vision for supporting females in the local area and further, in achieving body confidence through a realistic and sustainable approach to exercise and nutrition. We feel GRL is special as it welcomes women of all ages, abilities, experiences and backgrounds. Our clients support one another in their achievements and in all aspects of their training- no matter the age, ability or accomplishment. Our team collaborates in dedicating our energy to ensure all clients receive exceptional service and outstanding, realistic and maintainable knowledge on their health and fitness, from all staff. How many PTs/coaches are there?

We have four coaches and two admin staff. How long have you been a coach and what was it that made you want to get into the fitness business? I began coaching when I finished my degree as I loved the gym, the energy it brought to me and the uplift in not only my physical health, but my mental health too. Having that time to focus on myself and taking a breather from the day was my sanctuary, and still is to this day! I developed such a passion for fitness and endeavoured to pass my love and knowledge onto like-minded women of all ages who wanted to improve their lifestyle, energy and health as a whole. My qualifications enabled me to do this and since that point in 2018, I’ve never looked back! Now, we have a fantastic, motivated and dedicated team of staff who work together in the same vision of empowering women across NI,

GRL Health and Fitness, 20 Lisnabilla Road, Moira BT67 0JW Follow us on social media: @grlhealthfit

With so many more people having mental health issues, do you think being active and training can help? 1000%! The feedback we receive on how GRL positively impacts our clients’ mental health has us smiling from ear to ear. As much as our members love the physical changes to their bodies and their health, the mental health benefits commonly outweigh the physical. We work regularly with our clients to improve their mental health on a 1-1 basis, run workshops, discuss this topic within our GRL Talk podcasts, and share content across our social media pages to help ladies far and wide with their mental health. Can having the accountability of signing up to a programme at the gym help get ladies back on track or started with their fitness journey? Having the RIGHT support and accountability will absolutely enable and encourage anyone to be consistent, or begin their fitness journey. We pride ourselves in understanding women’s health, such as menstrual cycles and the impacts this has on the female body. This is just one of the many reasons our coaches develop a close bond with our clients, as clients feel comfortable, supported and heard when it comes to their own individual needs, abilities, injuries and illnesses.

Back to Routine: Why Now is the Best Time to Set New Year’s Resolutions (Not January) As the days grow shorter and the end of summer draws near, many of us feel the shift back to routine. School is back in session, work schedules normalise, and life takes on a more predictable rhythm. It’s a season often overlooked in terms of personal goal-setting, with many waiting until January to make resolutions. But as a functional medicine doctor, I would argue that right now – this very moment – is the ideal time to reassess, recalibrate, and set your new goals. Here’s why. The Myth of January Resolutions January has long been hailed as the month of fresh starts. The calendar turns, and we’re bombarded with the notion that it’s time to reinvent ourselves. But let’s be honest: January is often a challenging month. The days are short, the weather is cold, and after the festive season, most of us feel more like hibernating than jumping into new routines. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed, which is why so many resolutions fizzle out by February. The Power of the Present: Late Summer Resolutions By contrast, the end of summer offers a unique window of opportunity. The slower pace of the summer months allows for reflection, and as we transition back into our regular schedules, we can more easily identify areas of our lives that need attention. This is the time when you’re more attuned to your routines – both good and bad. Have you noticed that your energy levels are dipping, or that you’re struggling to stay disciplined with your nutrition? Now is the moment to address these issues before they become ingrained habits that are harder to break in the winter. Avoiding the Burnout Trap Another reason to start your resolutions now is

to prevent burnout before winter hits. The end of summer is often when the wear and tear of the year starts to show. Many of us push through, ignoring the signs of burnout, only to hit a wall when winter comes. The result? We fall out of love with exercise, let our nutrition slide, and struggle to maintain discipline. By setting goals now, you can implement strategies to keep your energy up and your motivation strong, even as the days get darker. How to Stay Focused and On Track To make the most of this opportune time, consider taking a holistic approach to your health and well-being. Here are some tips to help you stay focused and maintain momentum: 1. Get a Bloodwork Overview: Understanding your current health status is crucial for setting realistic and achievable goals. A comprehensive bloodwork panel can reveal nutrient deficiencies, hormone imbalances, or other underlying issues that might be affecting your energy levels and overall well-being. 2. Embrace an MOT Mindset: Think of this time as an MOT for your body and mind. Just as you’d service your car to keep it running smoothly, regular check-ups on your health can prevent larger issues down the road. This could involve

anything from a detailed metabolic assessment to a stress resilience test. 3. Consider Our Health Packages: To help you on your journey, we offer a range of health packages tailored to your specific needs. Whether you’re looking to boost your energy, improve your diet, or enhance your overall health, our packages are designed to provide you with the tools and insights you need to succeed. The Takeaway Now is the time to take action. By setting your resolutions at the end of summer, you’re giving yourself the best chance of success. You’re already in a mindset of routine, your energy levels are higher than they would be in the depths of winter, and you’re more likely to stay consistent. Don’t wait until January – start now, and give yourself the gift of a healthier, happier winter season. What is food allergy? Food allergy is an over-sensitivity / increased sensitivity to a particular food protein such as milk, egg or nuts. Exposure to the allergen causes the release of chemicals in the body that can cause unpleasant and potentially harmful effects. The most severe form is known as anaphylaxis, which can be life threatening. Some types of food allergy (often referred to as delayed or non-IgE mediated) are also called food intolerances.

What treatments are available for food allergies? Standard advice in the NHS is to avoid food allergens; there is also another approach known as desensitisation or OIT (Oral Induction of Tolerance) depending on the allergen.

EDITED BY REBECCA NELSON

Rebecca is founder and Director of Physiotherapy at Apex Clinic and Apex Headache Clinic.

Let Apex Headache Clinic cure your child’s headaches or migraines Does your child suffer from frequent headaches or migraines? This month, Apex Headache Clinic founder and spinal & headache physiotherapy specialist, Rebecca Nelson, shares how the team at Ireland’s first drug-free headache and migraine clinic has been successfully using her evidencebased, manual physiotherapy regime to clear children and teenagers of their headaches and migraines, as well as treating adults of all ages. Children suffer from headaches and migraines too While it’s widely known that adults suffer from headaches and migraines, it might surprise you to learn that 70% of school children have a headache at least once a year, with 25% of these children suffering recurring headaches. Furthermore, a staggering 10% of school children experience migraines, affecting both girls and boys. Are headaches ruining your child’s life? At Apex Headache Clinic, our team frequently sees the devastating effects that headaches can have on lives. Parents often come to the clinic after trying all other avenues, including consulting GPs, paediatricians, neurologists and opticians, in desperation to find a cure for their child’s headaches or migraines. At Apex Headache Clinic we offer hope to families, thanks to our drug-free specialist approach to treating and clearing these debilitating conditions.

The Nelson Headache Approach™ My approach of treating and clearing headaches/migraines, called The Nelson Headache Approach™, is offered in no other clinic in the UK, and its high success rate explains why people travel from all over the UK, southern Ireland and Europe for this treatment. It was whilst I was working as a physiotherapist in New Zealand, early in my career, that I sought treatment for my own migraines. These were diagnosed as stemming from my neck, and following treatment, I have been painfree ever since. The change this had on my life is indescribable. With years of experience of treating headaches and migraine sufferers, I further developed my own regime for treating and clearing headaches and migraines. We offer this unique, drug-free approach for all ages, including children from 4 years old and upwards.

Cian’s life was changed after visiting Apex Headache Clinic 15-year-old Cian Smith from County Cavan was given new hope and the opportunity to see a brighter future following a visit to Apex Headache Clinic. Cian said, “All I’d ever known was life with headaches. I’m told that at the age of 6 months, I began suffering from them. With the onset of a headache, my temperature dropped, I became pale and the pain was so severe that it would cause me to vomit. Nothing in particular seemed to trigger it and we tried all angles, such as consulting GPs and paediatricians, undergoing allergy tests and having MRI scans. You name it, we tried it. When I was properly diagnosed as having migraines, I was told that it was something I would have to live with and that I might eventually grow out of it. As this was severely affecting my life, it was really hard to hear and to think that I was stuck with these migraines forever. We live in Cavan and all I can say is that it was definitely worth the two-and-a-half-hour drive. My Granny recently commented that I’m a lot more confident and care-free now, which I guess comes from not worrying about how a migraine could ruin my day. In a nutshell, Apex Headache Clinic really has changed my life.” If you would like to book an appointment at Apex Clinic, contact us on: 028 9048 4153. No GP referral is necessary.

Apex Clinic has given me relief after 10 years of suffering “plantar fasciitis” 48-year-old Jonathan Taylor, from Belfast, was no longer able to enjoy sport and exercise without suffering terrible foot pain afterwards. He visited Apex Clinic, Belfast, desperate to get to the source of his pain. Apex Clinic’s unique regime of specialist manual physiotherapy treatment, called The Nelson Spinal Approach , cleared his foot pain and, to his surprise, he discovered that the pain had come from his back all along. TM

Jonathan, tell us when your foot pain began? I have had pain in my right foot for at least 10 years, maybe longer. In the past I was diagnosed with plantar fasciitis. I tried various home remedies, painkillers and insoles but nothing helped with the pain. The pain was worse in the mornings and after doing any exercise or sport it was so bad that I had to hobble around the house. How did the pain affect your life? I play football regularly and I was in severe pain after playing. I had accepted that this excruciating pain in my foot, or sometimes both feet, was going to be a side effect of doing something that I had always enjoyed. The foot pain also affected me when standing at work, even for a very short period. What led you to Apex Clinic? My wife saw Apex Clinic advertised on Facebook and as she knew how much I was suffering with plantar fasciitis she made me an appointment. I attended for an initial assessment with my specialist physiotherapist and after a thorough assessment of my foot and my medical history, my physio diagnosed my foot pain as being connected to an old back injury that I had from playing football over 20 years ago. I then began having regular manual physiotherapy treatment to my back to treat my referred foot pain. I couldn’t believe how the treatment of my back started to improve my foot pain. How has Apex Clinic changed your life? It’s fantastic! My pain levels have come down drastically! My pain levels used to be around 8 or 9 out of 10 but now after playing football or exercising my pain is around a 1 or 2 out of 10 and the pain doesn’t last anywhere near as long as it did before. I am now pain free for over 90% of the time. What advice would you offer someone suffering from plantar fasciitis or foot pain generally? Online research isn’t the best avenue. I would advise you to book an appointment with one of the specialist physios at Apex Clinic. They know what they are talking about and will try to get to the source of your pain. Don’t give up on finding a solution to any long-term pains. To book an appointment at Apex Headache Clinic, call 028 9048 4153. No GP referral is necessary.

Dr Caoimhe Glancy from Children’s Allergy Clinic NI answers our readers’ allergy questions. “I would like some advice on taking my child on their first foreign holiday. They have a peanut allergy which was diagnosed last year. I have been apprehensive about travelling on a plane after hearing stories of people going into anaphylactic shock during flights. What precautions should we take?” Firstly, its extremely common and understandable that you feel anxious about travelling with your son/daughter who has a peanut allergy. This can feel like a life changing diagnosis and is well known to have a significant impact on family life including travelling. The good news is, there are steps you can take to alleviate these worries. These are my top tips for travelling with a food allergy: 1. Communicate. Do some research and speak to travel insurance companies, airlines and hotels before you travel and find the right match your child’s needs. When on holiday, translation cards are a very good way to ensure your child’s allergy is clear and translated into the appropriate language, you can purchase these from Allergy UK (www.allergyuk.org). Remember throughout your holiday to communicate your child’s allergy including at check in, when boarding the flight and when food is being offered. 2. Plan your food for your journey and anticipate delays, so bring extra supplies. Knowing your child is eating food they have consumed safely at home will help alleviate worries while travelling. 3. Ensure you carry your allergy action and a letter from your doctor/ specialist to enable you to carry the medications on board. Check your child’s medications are in date and will not expire before the end of your holiday. You can always contact your specialist or GP to discuss their action plan and medication prior to departure. If you have an adrenaline autoinjector (AAI), ensure you have been trained on how and when to use these. The medications must be carried on board and kept with your child at all times. 4. Carry wipes to enable you to wipe down surfaces, especially the tray table on the plane, and ensure your child washes their hands before eating. “My 10-year-old daughter has been coming out in a hive-like rash. We think it is her grandparents’ new rescue dog (a short-haired mixed breed). She has never shown an allergic reaction to previous dogs. Can this be prevented with antihistamines or will she have to stay away from the dog?” This is a very common reason for patients to attend my clinic. There is an assumption that if a patient develops hives they must be ‘allergic’ to something, but in fact there are also allergic conditions that cause patients to come out in hives (urticaria) without having an allergy to anything specifically. It would be important to take a detailed history with your daughter and differentiate whether it is the contact associated with the dog or another type of allergic disease such as a spontaneous urticaria. Allergy testing could also be useful, depending on what information is gathered from the history, to look for evidence of sensitisation to dogs. You can develop an allergy at any point in your life, so it is possible she has become sensitized to dogs and is now allergic, but it is also possible this is another type of allergic disease.

“I’m an English teacher who, eight years ago, decided to follow my dream of becoming a professional photographer. At the start of my career I concentrated mainly on newborn and family portraits, but decided it was the weddings that my heart was in, as they allowed me to be more creative. I am a super-chilled and easy-going person, yet when it comes to creating the images, I’m very passionate and creative – I never do exactly the same session twice. I strongly

believe in empowering other women and creating a community where women lift each other up. My favourite saying is ‘in a society that profits from your self doubt, liking yourself is a rebellious act’. I feel my mission is to prove to the women who stand in front of my camera that they are worthy of everything and they’re beautiful, inside and out. I have decided to open a studio in Ballymoney, which is a versatile space where I’ll be running mindfulness and

creative workshops. It is called ‘Ayni’ creative and well-being studio. Ayni means: today for you, tomorrow for me. I stepped into my own spiritual journey a few years ago, which has not only allowed me to find peace and support others on their journey, but to capture even more of the essence of my models. Photography is my biggest love, empowering women is my true passion – when I combine these two I am in a flow state, it is effortless.”

If there is one thing we do well in this country, it’s food. Foodie culture has really taken off and farmers’ markets have become increasingly popular, with many people travelling from far and wide to browse and pick up the freshest local ingredients for their meals. We all thrive on getting out to restaurants and cafés, not only to to enjoy the food on offer but also for a change of scenery, to soak up the atmosphere and to enjoy some respite from the daily grind. Local restaurants and takeaway establishments now place a much greater emphasis on allergies and intolerances, providing more vegan and gluten-free options so that all needs are catered for. But remember, it is not all about the food. With a number of award-winning breweries and distilleries in Northern Ireland, you are guaranteed to find the perfect aperitif or night cap to round off your dining experience. The food and drinks industry is at the heart of life in Northern Ireland, so read on to be inspired by a selection of our local offerings.

Mindful Chef recipe boxes, described as ‘healthy eating made easy’, have arrived in Northern Ireland and I was lucky enough to try a couple of the tasty recipes. Founded in 2015 by three British school friends from Devon: Giles Humphries, Myles Hopper and Rob Grieg-Gran, the brand’s mission has always been to make healthy eating easy, accessible and sustainable, with 94% of customers in the UK saying Mindful Chef has made healthy eating easier for them. Mindful Chef offers its customers 40 fresh and healthy recipes a week to choose from, designed by an in-house team of chefs. Having recently moved into our new house, my husband and I are still finding our way around the kitchen and, with us both working full-time, preparing meals can be a bit of a chore. We were treated to two meals from Mindful Chef to give us an insight into how this food delivery service works. The box was delivered right to our doorstep, packaged to perfection with ice packs to keep everything as fresh as possible. Inside was a recipe booklet, packed full of mouth-watering recipes, everything from curries to salads and pasta dishes. We were given the creamy prawn gnocchi and the Brazilian steaks with chimichurri to sample – the images in the recipe looked delicious, so I just hoped that I could do it justice. I am fairly confident in the kitchen, but when making new dishes I like to have clear instructions. This is what is great about Mindful Chef – it has all the fresh ingredients clearly labelled and the method is laid out, stepby-step – making it straightforward for even the most inexperienced cooks. Not to blow my own trumpet, so to speak, but both dishes turned out perfectly (possibly more of a reflection of how clear the instructions were). Both meals contained an ample amount for the two of us and we ate every last morsel. One of my pet peeves is food wastage, which can easily happen when cooking the likes of pasta and rice – does anyone else accidently put on enough to feed the whole village? Wastage wouldn’t be an issue with Mindful Chef because they provide just the right amount. Both meals were packed full of flavour. The prawn and chorizo gnocchi was creamy with a spicy punch, while the Brazillian steak had a zesty, fresh flavour. Mindful is a very fitting name, because my husband and I both aim to be mindful in our food choices during the week, so it was refreshing to use healthy ingredients and see exactly what was going into our meals. We were both very impressed with our experience of using Mindful Chef recipe boxes. It takes the hard work out of cooking, which is a blessing in the fast-paced world that we live in. We would definitely use this service again. For more information visit www.mindfulchef.com

We’ve Been Picking

for Four Generations

Tea

In 1896, from a tea warehouse near Belfast docks, founder Robert S Thompson, trained in the art of tea tasting and soon became known for his uncompromising devotion to quality.

"An independent, family business of 4 generations, born and blended in Belfast since 1896" Today, Thompson’s Tea, who make Northern Ireland’s favourite tea, Punjana, have been blending and packing their award-winning range in Belfast for over 125 years.

Northern Ireland's favourite cuppa, nestled in a tea bush in India.

So, where did the Punjana name come from? It was in the 1950’s that second generation, James Thompson, asked his wife, Elizabeth, to come up with a name for the tea company. One day, when on a shopping trip to Comber, inspiration came from the top of the Gillespie Memorial statue. Here, there is an inscription that mentions a place in India called ‘The Punjab’, and after a little playing around with the name, Punjana Tea was born. Such was the belief in this new brand name that they decided to feature an advert on the very first night of UTV in 1959 with their now famous Pick Punjana Tea jingle.

On a recent visit to India... Arriving at the tea gardens is like diving into a sea of pure, green leaf. It’s truly astonishing to see the uninterrupted acres of luscious tea leaves, growing rapidly in the heat and humidity of Assam. Growing tea in Assam is a way of life! On these gardens, we had the pleasure of meeting people who had dedicated their life to learning about tea, and it was inspirational to see the true passion that they had – they are truly steeped in tea.

Jamie Thompson

Fourth generation, Camille and Jamie Thompson share this same passion for Punjana and take great pleasure in continuing to select teas from only the very finest gardens in Assam, Kenya and beyond.

Taste the World Sabeh was honoured to be selected to showcase her Tunisian cuisine at Belfast’s Mela festival. Guests to the festival were taken on a food journey across the globe, with cook-alongs and taste workshops showcasing the best chefs and producers in Northern Ireland. She was joined by Pamela Ballantine who hosted the workshops and who has been a big supporter of Sabeh and Carthago.

Sabeh pictured with Pamela Ballantine at the recent Belfast Mela festival.

Sabeh cooked up some of Tunisia’s most renowned dishes, including a Tunisian couscous dish. What makes this dish unique is the inclusion of the aromatic harissa. Tunisian households will dry out chillis throughout the summer months to make their renowned harissa paste. Harissa was registered at Unesco world heritage as Tunisia’s national sauce, which is the secret ingredient that adds colour and flavour to their cuisine. Another unique spice that is used in Tunisian dishes is ras el hanout, which is a mixture of spices such as caraway, coriander, cumin, ginger and orange peel. With the addition of locally sourced Irish lamb, this dish went down a storm. No meal is complete without finishing with something sweet. Sabeh chose to cook up Makroudh, which is a diamond-shaped cookie that dates back to ancient times. It is made with dates, semolina, honey and spices such as cloves and cinnamon. The organic biscuit is a delicious healthy alternative and can be easily made with local ingredients. Sabeh is passionate about introducing different food cultures to Northern Ireland, using the high-quality local produce that this island has to offer. The introduction of these diverse restaurants and eateries allows people to experience food from all over the world, whilst also boosting the local economy.

Carthago Restaurant in Moira serves authentic North African, Mediterranean and Tunisian cuisine. Tunisian cuisine is the magic combination between North African Barbere, Arab culture and hints of the Mediterranean south coast. Tunisian cuisine uses olive oil, fresh herbs and spices like ras el hanout and harissa, These rich flavours combined with lamb, beef, chicken and seafood make for delicious dishes. Tunisian couscous with lamb is the country’s national dish, but we also have many other types of couscous with vegetables, fish and seafood. We offer different types of stew, tagines, spiced with harissa and tomatoes or mild with saffron and lemon. We have lots of dishes like nwasser, which is a spicy steamed pasta; rouz jirby, which is steamed rice with meat, spices and green vegetables; and shakshouka with salads.

ABOUT ME I’m Sabeh Sendi, originally from the very north tip of Tunisia, in the Mediterranean city of Bizerta. I love cooking, it is something we have to learn from a young age. I worked in different jobs as a chef and then decided to open a Tunisian restaurant to showcase our food and our culture. The people of Northern Ireland love our food, we have a lot of return customers and always new faces. Tunisia is a beautiful, magical and exotic country with beautiful beaches, nature, rich history and this is reflected in our cuisine.

TUNISIAN MASFOUF BY SABEH SENDI Sweet Couscous (vegan) Ingredients 100g couscous 1 tsp olive oil Handful of roasted nuts, dry fruits, chopped dates 1 tsp orange blossom water Handful of pomegranate Rub the couscous with the olive oil. Belfast Charitable Society is celebrating 250 years of its home, Clifton House

Since first opening its doors in January 1774 as the Poorhouse of Belfast, Clifton House has been an iconic sight on the city’s skyline, synonymous with addressing poverty and disadvantage. The Society designed, fundraised, built and managed it, providing a home for the most vulnerable citizens of Belfast. To this day, the Society ensures that Clifton House remains true to the charity’s mission… to care for those in need. As part of the 250th anniversary, staff and volunteers of Belfast Charitable Society have so far delivered a variety of special legacy projects, talks, tours, conferences, exhibitions and social media campaigns, which help to tell the story of the house throughout its 250 years. This work will continue until December 2024, the official anniversary of the opening of the house and a close to a phenomenally busy year. Professor Alastair Adair, Chair of Belfast Charitable Society, commented, “The Society has a strong history of challenge and innovation, and so a large part of this year’s work has, and will continue to, reflect that. We wanted to bring others together to talk about the reality of poverty and disadvantage today and question, ‘What should Belfast Charitable Society (or the current citizens of Belfast) ‘build’ in 2024 to meet the needs of the disadvantaged, as it did back in 1774?” The flagship event in Clifton House’s 250th calendar is Heritage Day. Heritage Day, which took place on Sunday 1st September, celebrated the long history of the house and its significant importance in developing and helping the city of Belfast through a day of traditional skills and crafts, live music and food. Over 1,000 visitors came along on the day to enjoy the variety of heritage skills and craft demonstrations on offer. People of all ages flooded through the gates throughout the day to browse the craft fair; take part in some traditional children’s games, including a history hunt; to listen to some fabulous live music; and to hear stories from the past 250 years from Clifton House’s fabulous volunteers, who were on hand to share stories of the history of Clifton House. Paula Reynolds, CEO of Belfast Charitable Society, expanded, “It was important to us to create a fun day that was open and accessible to the local community and beyond, and we were just so overwhelmed and delighted with the number of people who came along, many of whom had never been before. We want to thank Belfast City Council for their support and our partner Radius Housing, for helping us make the day really special. We also had a fantastic response to our first ever History

Harvest, which was run in conjunction with partners in the North Belfast Heritage Cluster and its Great Place North Belfast project. We can’t wait to share some of the amazing stories and memories in due course.” Alastair concluded: “We want to use this significant milestone to also attract donations from members of the public, local businesses and via our stakeholders and partners, that can contribute towards our cost-ofliving grant fund. Since December 2023, Belfast Charitable Society’s funding has ensured that 12,200 children in North Belfast schools have had at least one nutritious meal a day, and will continue to do so while the need is so great.” For further details on Clifton House’s 250th anniversary, including how you can make a donation, please visit https://cliftonbelfast. com/clifton-house-250/ Image courtesy of courtesy of NMNI

ARTS DIARY

“This exhibition, which at times is reminiscent of Matisse in its exploration of colour and pattern, is a truly extraordinary concept.”

EDITED BY KELLIE BURCH

KELLIE@ULSTERTATLER.COM

John Baucher Exhibition Launch Flags, flying from lampposts or abandoned in tatters, were the inspiration behind John Baucher’s new exhibition, Try We Must – the Impossible Task of Squaring the Circle. Held in Vault Artist Studios in Victoria Street, Belfast, the multifaceted exhibition converts retrieved or donated flags and their paraphernalia into striking art. The exhibition is extremely powerful. By re-imagining everyday objects, Baucher, who has a background in community relations, gives them new meaning. Under his artistic eye, remnants of flags, cable ties, warped sections of lampposts and worn eyelets are transformed into things of beauty. The exhibition includes themes of identity, as well as the exploration of flags and their relevance in modern society. As well as using some of the imagery from the flags, Baucher incorporated a lot of the original colours. In his own words: “There’s an awful lot of red in this exhibition. It’s about blood ties and blood spilled.” Which is testament to the power of flags in Northern Ireland. Try We Must – the Impossible Task of Squaring the Circle, was officially opened by the High Sheriff of Belfast, Sammy Douglas, and attracted a bustling crowd including British Council director Jonathan Stewart and Chilean artist and collaborator Mauro Olivos - who created a plinth exploring the similarities between Northern Ireland and Chile, which acted as a base for the piece ‘Indeterminate Lump of Loyalty’. This exhibition, which at times is reminiscent of Matisse in its exploration of colour and pattern, is a truly extraordinary concept. Baucher is the only artist using these materials and by doing so he is able to create a remarkable catalogue of work which pushes boundaries and provides a fresh and illuminating perspective of the culture, emblems, and paraphernalia woven throughout Northern Ireland. I think what makes this exhibition so compelling is its ability to add a new dimension and layer to everyday objects. As Rosemary Jenkinson perfectly summarised in her companion essay to the exhibition, ‘Flagging the Truth’: “One person’s detritus is an artist’s gold dust.” The opening of Try We Must – the Impossible Task of Squaring the Circle took place on 1 August 2024.

Irish Whiskey Industry Awards Torrential rainfall and gridlocked traffic could not stop guests toasting the winners of the 3rd annual Irish Whiskey Industry Awards. Hosted by Anne-Marie Wallace at The Great Hall, Queen’s University Belfast, the awards, which concluded the 6th edition of the incredibly popular Belfast Whiskey Week, recognise those in the whiskey industry who are making their mark. After a drinks reception, guests were treated to a mouth-watering threecourse meal. With appetites satiated and glasses full, it was time for the main event, the awards ceremony. There were an astonishing 27 categories, with winners being selected by a public vote. Big winners on the night included Dingle Distillery, who scooped multiple awards such as Brand Ambassador of the Year (Dave Cummins), Sales Representative

Melanie Harrison and Dr Katy Radford.

Rocio Munoz and AJ Lynn.

of the Year (Fiach Lynch), Blender of the Year (Paddy Foley), and Irish Whiskey Experience of the Year. For those wanting to know the best spot in NI for a tipple of the amber stuff, look no further than The Duke of York in Belfast, who walked away with Irish Whiskey Bar of the Year (NI). Meanwhile the Irish Whiskey Bar of the Year All Ireland went to Dick Mack’s (Dingle) and Worldwide went to The Dead Rabbit (New York). Women are becoming more dominant in the whiskey world and it was good to see this reflected in the award winners with Sarah Kennedy of McConnell’s Distillery taking Sales Manager of the Year, Emily Doherty of the Merchant Hotel being named Mixology Specialist of the Year, and Marian McCarthy of Dingle Distillery being announced Most Inspiring Individual in the Irish Whiskey Industry. The final award of the night was The Robin Gibson Award In Recognition of an Outstanding Contribution to Irish Wine &

Warren Dalzell and Anne-Marie Wallace.

Spirit Education and/or Production in NI which went to Peter Morris Wilson. Prior to presenting the award, Belfast Whiskey Week festival director Paul Kane remarked on the impact Peter Morris Wilson had in his own career development in the whiskey industry. Belfast Whiskey Week, sponsored by ABL Group Insurance Brokers, is one of my favourite festivals. Featuring 100 events, across 9 days, it successfully celebrates Belfast’s deep-rooted history and connection in the production of whiskey spanning centuries, as well as providing accessible, creative and exciting experiences for a wide range of festival goers. The annual Irish Whiskey Industry Awards was the absolutely perfect way to round off such an outstanding festival. If you didn’t get a chance to sample this year’s offering, Belfast Whiskey Week is scheduled for 18-26 July 2025. Cheers! The Irish Whiskey Industry Awards took place on 27 July.

Commissioning a Margey Original for your space

Artist Adrian Margey is well known for his contemporary and traditional depictions of our landscape, landmarks and musical traditions. Hot on the heels of his summer exhibitions on the North Coast, the artist is opening up his commission diary for Christmas orders. Art-lovers often commission Adrian to create a bespoke piece that resonates with them and makes a statement in their home. Others use the commissioning service to source gifts to celebrate milestones such as weddings, birthdays, retirements and of course Christmas. The process is straightforward. Adrian works with the client to explore various size options to suit their space and budget. Together they will determine the desired colour palette and style. Adrian has a few contrasting styles and normally the person commissioning will have a preference. Looking at examples of previous work often helps steer the commission. Adrian mainly paints landscapes and cityscapes, so most of his commissions involve capturing a special place that has significance for the commissioner or the person receiving the piece as a gift. If you are interested in commissioning an Adrian Margey original for your space, telephone his Portrush Studio on 07841593762 or visit www.adrianmargey.com to learn more.

Lord Mayor Michael Murray visits St Malachy’s to view memorial garden St Malachy’s Church, Belfast is a historic inner-city spiritual and temporal home to all – including many of the tourists visiting our city. As Belfast welcomes the many visitors to our city, a memorial garden, established by Mr James McStravick in memory of his late wife, Geraldine, is proving an added bonus to St Malachy’s – with magnificent colour to enhance this landmark historical building in Alfred Street. The Very Rev. Thomas McGlynn recently welcomed the Lord Mayor to the parish.

The Word

For the moments that matter, fly from the heart of Belfast

‘From the beginning my relationship with poetry has been that of a werewolf with the moon, not even the rattle of silver bullets can hush the silence of the howling.’ Paul Yates, reading at the Robert Graves Museum, Majorca, 2022.

Making memories with family, reunions with loved ones, and getaways with friends – travel is vital for connecting you to special moments. And when your next stop is that important, it feels like every minute counts. Thankfully, Belfast City Airport offers a fast, convenient, and smooth travel experience, ensuring you can make the most of those minutes and save them for the moments that matter.

Belfast-born British artist Paul Yates has sustained a highly original and compelling creative output across poetry, painting and film for over five decades, while maintaining a very private personal profile, declining interviews and preferring that his work speak for itself. Truly sui generis.

The heart of Belfast Located only five minutes from Belfast city centre, Belfast City Airport is the fastest start to any journey. Its close proximity to Belfast offers unrivalled convenience, and with one of the shortest car-to-gate distances in Europe, getting through the terminal is a breeze. Plus, with more domestic destinations than any other UK airport, Belfast City Airport connects you from the heart of Belfast to the heart of where you need to be.

Lord Glentoran, Patron

Paul Yates Selected Poems 1967 – 2023 HB edition 438 pp. £40.00 Limited edition with slip case signed and numbered £120.00

Putting the ‘fast’ in Belfast City Airport From being named the most punctual airport in the UK in 2023 to its speedy average security processing time of only six minutes, it’s no surprise that Belfast City Airport is the airport of choice in Northern Ireland.

Now available from www. paulyatesart.com/poetry Amazon.co.uk, Bradbury Art and good bookshops.

A global gateway With 190 connections via its London Heathrow, Manchester, Amsterdam and Frankfurt routes, Belfast City Airport is Northern Ireland’s only true global gateway. Regardless of your final destination, take off from the city and enjoy a quick and hassle-free journey. To find out more about travelling from Belfast City Airport, visit belfastcityairport.com

South Belfast

THE HEART OF THE CITY South Belfast is a historically rich and culturally diverse area, which has played a significant role in Northern Ireland’s development. Situated on the south end of the River Lagan, the area has a history which dates back centuries. The vibrant Lisburn and Ormeau roads, with their eclectic mix of shops, cafes and restaurants, have become popular destinations for locals and tourists alike, while the picturesque Lagan towpath offers a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. The earliest records of south Belfat can be traced back to ancient times. In the 17th and 18th centuries, south Belfast experienced growth and development with the industrial revolution, before the 19th century saw the expansion of the area as a residential and commercial district. In more recent years, the area has undergone a process of regeneration and revitalisation. Caption: Ormeau Park

Success for Finaghy FC

Giving back to the Community

Finaghy Football Club celebrated success by winning the Intermediate 1C section of the NAFL 2023/24 and gained promotion to division 1B. The 2’s team narrowly missed out out on promotion but have laid the foundations to compete this season with the hope of progressing up the Junior Division. The over 35’s team continued with friendly fixtures and fundraising for charities. Their opponents included Shorts FC, Bloomfield FC and Queen’s University. The club is grateful to all the local businesses in Finaghy that have provided sponsorship: The Doyen, Finaghy Cleaning Services, Creightons of Finaghy, DM Timber and David Crymble & Sons to name a few.

ANTHONY JAMIESON the real estate agent How long have you been working in south Belfast? I have lived on the Ormeau Road area for 17 years but I started working here nine years ago when I opened my office on the road. What do you love most about the area? I love the warmth and diversity of the people in the local area and the amenities on offer. We are fortunate to have two of the largest sports clubs in Belfast, Rosario FC & Bredagh GAA, along with an array of good restaurants, cafés and parks. Where do you like to dine and socialise in the area? There are a host of good local restaurants, cafés and pubs to choose from. My favourite restaurant on the road is Stove and I also go to Shed, La Taqueria, Macau, Little Wings and I am keen to try Madame Pho’s which has just opened. For a drink I would frequent either The Errigle or Northern Lights; and Kaffe O, General Merchants and Canteen offer good coffee. What do you love most about your job? I love the variety of people I get to meet and the satisfaction of helping people make the move into their new home. This area also offers a range of different types of property, both young and old, representing the unique character of Ormeau.

Bringing a Taste of Spain to Belfast The family-run, Irish restaurant, first established in 2012 as the maritime-themed ‘Holohans at the Barge’, has continued to grow in popularity with locals and visitors to Northern Ireland alike. Now nestled in the heart of the Queen’s Quarter, Holohan’s Pantry is owned and managed by siblings and food enthusiasts Calvin and Emir Holohan. Hospitality is at the heart of the siblings’ business values, claims Emir: “We like to treat people the same way we would guests in our own home, in fact, I daresay we treat them better!” Calvin, an Ulster University Culinary Arts graduate with twenty-five years’ industry experience, adds, “Survival is dependent on your willingness to expand and reinvent yourself.” With a particular passion for Spanish food and culture, the siblings are bringing a taste of sunny Spain to Belfast in the coming weeks in the form of “The Spanish Earl” popup. Initially opening on a Monday night at the Pantry, their offering will include a selection of tapas and pintxos, from classic croquetas, tortillas and bravas to traditional cured meats, cheese and seafood, along with Spanish wines by the glass, traditional Vermouths, sherries and cold beer on tap. “We will be applying the same level of authenticity to our Spanish concept as we do in all our endeavours,” says Calvin. “We thank our customers for their loyal support and we are so excited to be offering Belfast an entirely new, Spanish experience!” Bookings can me made online through www.holohanspantry.co.uk

Speaking to David Millar from the Ulster Tatler Group. How long have you been living/ working in south Belfast? The Lisburn Road has been an integral part of my life for 20 years, with my church in the Agape Centre and through my freelance work with the Ulster Tatler Group. I have been a member of Dunmurry Golf Club for over 10 years. We have a great course and a fantastic social calendar for everyone to enjoy. Approved by major health insurance companies, it specialises in back pain but also offers treatment for a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions including neck and shoulder pain, ankle, foot and knee injuries, sports injuries, post op rehabilitation. 25 years experience with BSc(Hons) Physiotherapy.

There are a variety of locally run cafés – I visit them all regularly. I love the art galleries, many small businesses in the area are run by local entrepreneurs so I like to support them all when I can. Are there any hidden gems in south Belfast? There are many hidden gems along the Lisburn Road. For example, I love browsing through the beautiful designs and wide variety of interiors at Herbert Gould and of course Kris Turnbull’s design studio located within a stunning listed church is well worth a visit, even if its just for the visuals and appreciation of beautiful taste.
