Happy Talk
Iwas pleased but not that surprised to learn that Belfast is the happiest place in the UK, according to the ffice for National Statistics. elfast has certainly come a long way from the days when one of its main claims to fame was that the uropa was the most bombed hotel in urope.
Apparently, it was deemed the happiest city in the UK because the citi ens of elfast are the most likely to return a lost wallet go figure. Anyway, the C ran a story on this which appeared on the national news a few weeks ago. As an experiment, the reporter dropped ten wallets in the city centre with cash and his mobile number inside. e then waited to see how many people would contact him to return it. Guess how many did ou got it, all ten. didn t doubt it for a minute The Sunday Times, meanwhile, has ust published a supplement, est Places to Live 2025. n Northern reland, undrum, Co own was the winner, followed by olywood, Co own and then Portstewart, Co erry. No surprises there either - all beautiful coastal locations and easily accessible for a day trip for us city dwellers.

LIFE & TIMES
Paul Harron is an empty nester — his three sons have left home, at least for the time being. He lives with his wife and a wily fox terrier in east Belfast. He has authored several books, mostly on architectural history, and has written regularly for Ulster Tatler and Perspective (the journal of the Royal Society of Architects).
Souped Up?
So, firstly, hello As Kathy Clugston signed off from this column last month to focus on more radio pro ects (best wishes, Kathy — you have one of the most delightful voices on radio), m up for the next while to share some observations and obsessions to — hopefully — raise a smile.
ncidentally, as drove to Ulster Tatler recently to discuss this very column, who should be on the car radio on two channels simultaneously but Kathy Clugston t appeared that she could present The Ticket on Radio Ulster whilst also hosting Gardener s uestion Time (or G T, as they keep calling it don t start me on acronyms) on Radio 4. Spooky.
As write we are well into Lent, a season now strongly associate with soup. At the outset, let me say that m hopeless at giving up things for Lent (my better half, meanwhile, is annoyingly excellent at it). know what should forego chocolate biscuits but have fallen off the wagon (wheel) too often over the years to try. have, however, given up ouTube videos this year, and so far so good...
And so to soup. The better half and , accompanied by Toby the terrier, went over to Northumbria for a week there — an ama ing place for coastal walks, and castles galore. ur youngest son is at Newcastle Uni, so we took the boat, drove to Newcastle to pick him up and then went on to a cottage near the beautiful old town of Alnwick. can t go anywhere without exploring its churches. The family is longsuffering, though they ll only put up with so much. hared off to find Alnwick s 5th-century church but couldn t so dipped into another one to ask for directions. was greeted by the distinctive smell of vegetable soup and some genuinely lovely people who were having a Lenten lunch . They were very
keen to offer me a bowl. aving left herself with the terrier walking the streets, politely declined. ound the church but couldn t get in because of a funeral fair enough.
The next day, time for a big walk to Warkworth, a gorgeous old stone town with, yep, a very historic church. n went (this one was dog-friendly to boot), to be hit by the waft of vats of vegetable soup and greeted by the sight of a trestle table all the way down the aisle with older folk en oying a Lenten lunch . Would care to oin them for some soup Generous and charming as this was, d had my sights more set on the sausage special at the (dog-friendly loving this recent trend catching on, btw) pub across the road, so another polite retreat.
n Sunday, off to oly sland or Lindisfarne a stunning place, accessed by a long causeway when the tides allow. Lunch was re uired an ancient pub was found with a beer garden. t was busy there was ust one rather overworked barman who explained that we could have lunch but there d be a long wait at least twenty minutes. No problem the sun was shining, and we were on holiday. The three of us found a table and said d order at the bar. Son wanted fish and chips, as did , and herself would like a sandwich with a bowl of soup. went to order. m sure asked for the soup.
ack in the beer garden, other dogs had started yapping at ours (definitely not the other way around) and so we retreated from table two to table eight under a tree. ack to the bar to mention this the barman went off to the kitchen to alert the person who was both cooking and serving that was K apparently but there d still be a wait. No problem. also like a gift shop (the family is longsuffering) so decided d

Thérapie Fertility first opened in Dublin in 2021, with a simple mission; making fertility treatment in Ireland more accessible and affordable for those who need it.
The Cost Of Fertility Treatment
Since opening their doors four years ago, Thérapie Fertility has seen thousands of patients and have built their team to over 50 full-time staff, led by one of the country’s leading fertility experts, Dr. John Kennedy. They remain waiting list free and their four satellite services across the Island of Ireland have made it even easier for those travelling from all over Ireland and the UK.
One aspect of fertility treatment that people often don’t talk about is the cost. And let’s be honest, undergoing fertility treatment is expensive, and in more ways than one. It’s not only the financial implications of undergoing treatment, but the time commitment and emotional investment.
Let’s Talk
About Money
An average cycle of IVF can cost anywhere from £5,000 to £10,000 in the UK depending on what clinic you attend and what ‘extras’ are added onto the cycle.
Making fertility treatment accessible
Thérapie Fertility, Ireland’s most affordable IVF clinic, is thrilled to open the 4th satellite clinic, located in the heart of Belfast, Northern Ireland.
Bearing in mind that many people may need more than one cycle to conceive a child, that’s an extraordinary amount of money. With waiting lists years long in some cases, for many people, turning to a private clinic may be their only option when it comes to having a child.
Things To Ask Your Clinic
Many people go into treatment without a full understanding of what they may be charged for outside of the basic price. There are several things that are sometimes billed as an ‘add on’ and can give patients a nasty shock at an already stressful time in their life. The following items are often charged as an add on: Blastocyst, embryo freezing, use of AI and Embryoscope. For clinics where this is charged as an extra this can add £1,000 to £2,000 to the cost of your treatment, so be sure to ask!
At Thérapie Fertility, we believe that patients should have a full and clear understanding of the financial cost of proceeding with treatment before they ever start, and the full cost is clearly laid out at the very first appointment with
us. We also don’t believe in ‘add ons’, and if we think that something will be beneficial to your cycle it will be included as standard for all patients undergoing IVF or ICSI. And so, we include Blastocyst culture, embryo freezing and use of AI and Embryoscope in all cycles with us.
Making It Possible
Affordability is one of our clinic’s core values. We pride ourselves on being Ireland’s most affordable fertility clinic, helping to make fertility treatments more accessible to everyone, no matter what their situation. As well as having a lower IVF and ICSI cost than any other clinic in Ireland, we also provide a free fertility nurse consultation for each patient at the start of their journey. This is a no-stringsattached consultation, which gives you all the information needed to decide whether to proceed with testing or indeed treatment at Thérapie Fertility.

Fertility; our journey
UK based couple Katy & Anthony share their journey to parenthood with Thérapie Fertility
Our Initial Struggles
We are based in the UK and started trying to conceive in 2017. After some time and a few consultations with NHS doctors, we were told that there was nothing more they could do for us. This news was devastating, but we refused to give up. We began searching online for alternative options, hoping to find a place that could help us through IVF. That’s when we discovered Thérapie Fertility.
Discovering Thérapie Fertility
Our initial consultation with Thérapie Fertility was a game-changer. From the moment we interacted with the team online, we were overwhelmed by their helpfulness and warmth. We travelled to Dublin to meet Dr. Kennedy and the team in person. They conducted some tests and made us feel immediately at ease. Our journey with Thérapie Fertility started from that very day.
The IVF Process
Undeterred, we gave it another try in the summer of 2023. This time, we opted for a frozen transfer, and it worked. The result?
Our beautiful baby boy, Finnley. Throughout the entire process, every nurse and doctor we interacted with at Thérapie Fertility was exceptionally supportive. We felt like every single member of the team was personally invested in our journey.
Advice for UK Couples Considering IVF Abroad
For any couple in the UK considering overseas IVF treatments, we strongly recommend Thérapie Fertility. If you’re worried about the logistics or the idea of undergoing treatment in another country, don’t be. As long as you plan where you’re staying, it’s manageable and straightforward. More importantly, the compassion and support you receive from Thérapie Fertility make the journey worth every effort.
Cost-Effectiveness
Another significant benefit of choosing Thérapie Fertility was the cost. It was significantly more affordable compared to other options available to us. The process of obtaining medication was also simple. We just uploaded the prescription from Thérapie Fertility to the online company, and everything else was smooth sailing. Our life has transformed in the best possible way thanks to Thérapie Fertility. We cannot express our gratitude enough for the incredible support and care they provided us. For anyone facing a similar struggle, know that there is hope and help available. Thank you, Thérapie Fertility, for giving us the greatest gift of all. This is our story, and we hope it brings encouragement and hope to others in similar situations.

Pillow Talk: Is Your Pillow Affecting the Quality of Your Life?
This month, Apex Clinic Founder and Spinal & Headache Physiotherapy Specialist, Rebecca Nelson, reveals the hidden secrets on pillows and discusses the Apex Sleepwell Pillow range, her own orthopaedic pillow collection, clinically proven to reduce or clear neck pain and headaches in the majority of cases.
The wrong pillow can have catastrophic consequences
Did you know that sleeping on the wrong pillow can mean much more than simply just a bad night’s sleep? For over 30 years I have been treating patients suffering from neck and shoulder pain, as well as headaches, migraines and vertigo, and for many of these people their sleep is disturbed due to their pain. It is commonly unknown that soft or flat pillows can actually increase or even trigger the onset of neck pain, shoulder pain, arm pain, stiffness, pins and needles or numbness in the hands and arms, painful headaches, migraines and vertigo or dizziness.
Fighting the war against poor pillows
To combat the awful effects that poor pillows have on our health, the Apex Sleepwell Pillow range is my own collection of orthopaedic pillows, uniquely designed
in thickness and firmness to match the individual needs of sleepers according to their build. Each pillow has been technologically innovated to include the latest high-density core that, unlike other pillows on the market, runs throughout the pillow’s entire width. This central core plays an important role in ensuring the precise level of support needed for the optimum sleeping position for a healthy and painfree neck, head and shoulders.
Prevention is better than cure
At Apex Clinic, we firmly believe that prevention is always better than cure. For adults or teens who are fortunate enough to have never suffered with neck pain or headaches, the Apex Sleepwell Pillow is highly recommended to help prevent the onset of neck related pains in later life. Sleeping on a pillow which is too soft or flat causes the neck joints to be compressed and
placed under excessive load by the weight of the head. When lying down, the optimum neck position can be achieved by lifting the head very slightly upwards to an angle of between 30° to 45° from the horizontal. This allows the neck joints to open up and is physiologically the best sleeping position for a healthy neck and spine.
Finding your perfect match
The Apex Sleepwell Pillow collection incudes a range of pillow sizes so that you can find your perfect match. t is essential that your pillow supports your body shape and size to ensure your neck is at the correct angle while you sleep. The Apex Sleepwell Pillow range does just that with our two pillow types dependent on the height/thickness of the pillow. The H2 pillow is suitable for lightly built adults and teenagers, or for those who don’t like their pillows to be too fat. The H3 pillow is for average and larger builds, or simply for those who prefer a slightly fatter pillow.
Five-star reviews for the Apex Sleepwell Pillow
“Goodbye marshmallow pillows! I have always liked ‘marshmallow type’ pillows so when I was recommended the Apex pillow to help with a painful shoulder at night, I was not at all keen. I thought it would be far too hard, thus uncomfortable. However, in desperation I decided to give it a go and to my ama ement had my first good night s sleep in ages. I have had the Apex Sleepwell Pillow for well over a year now and can honestly say it has made a real difference to my neck and shoulder. efinitely money well spent.” - Julie from Belfast.

HEALTH MATTERS
44-year-old Michelle Osborne, from Bangor, suffered with migraines and headaches after having Covid, which had turned her life upside down. After thinking headaches might be something she would have to live with, she visited Apex Headache Clinic in the hope that she could get even a little relief. Here, she shares how the clinic’s unique regime of specialist manual physiotherapy treatment for headaches and migraines, called The Nelson Headache Approach™, cleared her headaches, meaning that she could start to enjoy life again.
Michelle, when did your headaches begin?
I contracted Covid two years ago and afterwards I was left with headaches, which isn’t even a strong enough word to describe the pain I was in. I felt like a scalding hot poker was being stabbed through the right hand side of my head and even my face was affected. I went to my GP and was referred for a brain scan and I was also sent to get my eyes checked. These came back clear but I was no further forward regarding the pain and I just kept suffering every day.
How did the pain affect your life?
The pain was horrific. I would end up in bed unable to lift my head with the pain. There were times when this was happening for five days in the week. I had no life whatsoever during this time. I was unable to run around after my son or look after my dog. I am a hairdresser and there were whole days when I would have to cancel all of my clients, so I wasn’t able to work either.
What led you to Apex Headache Clinic?
My friend in work had been attending Apex Clinic for physio and she recommended that I attend one of the headache physiotherapists to see what they could do for me. I
just needed to try anything at that stage to give me relief from the pain. I phoned up and booked an appointment. From my first appointment with my specialist physiotherapist, Nicole, I really felt listened to. At every appointment she kept giving me advice on things to do to help, alongside her “hands on” physio treatment.
How has your life changed since having treatment?
Within three months my headaches had completely gone! I have now got my life back. I am back to working full time, I can do whatever I need to do for my son and I’m in a new relationship. I hadn’t had a proper life for years and I am now back functioning normally, I don’t have to cancel plans and spend days in bed in pain! It’s fantastic!
What advice would you offer someone suffering from headaches or migraines?
If you explained to me before that such a gentle treatment to your neck was going to take the pain and headaches away, I wouldn’t have believed it! I would say to anyone suffering… just try it, it’s so worth it.

SOLASTA
HEALTHCARE, A SPECIALIST PROVIDER OF CUTTING-EDGE CATARACT SURGERY AND CARE, IS LOCATED AT THE BOULEVARD, BANBRIDGE.
Ulster Tatler speaks to Solasta’s lead medical director, Mr Mícheál O’Gallagher, one of the region’s most respected anterior segment surgeons.
You studied medicine at Queen’s University, at what point did you decide to specialise in ophthalmic medicine?
I discovered my passion for ophthalmology in my final year at Queen’s University during a specialist placement. I was captivated by the transformative impact of cataract surgery and the guidance from exceptional mentors, now esteemed colleagues, reinforced my decision to specialise.
What has been your career pathway to date and what is your role as medical director at Solasta?
After graduating, I completed the Northern Ireland Foundation Programme and secured a place on the highly competitive ophthalmology training programme –there was only one place available in NI that year. I gained specialist experience at Moorfields Eye Hospital and Great Ormond Street Hospital in London, focusing on corneal transplantation and paediatric cataract surgery. Returning to Belfast, I became a consultant at the Royal Victoria and Mater hospitals. Now, as medical director at Solasta Healthcare, I oversee the clinical team, ensuring the highest quality care at all stages of cataract surgeries.
What makes Solasta unique?
Solasta Healthcare excels in local expertise, with highly experienced surgeons and clinical sta providing world-class cataract care. Located at The Boulevard, Banbridge, between both Belfast and Dublin, we o er comprehensive care, state-of-the-
art equipment and a wide selection of intraocular lenses tailored to each patient.
What has been your career highlight to date?
A career highlight was working in London with internationally renowned ophthalmic teams. I was part of a collaborative, team-based environment where complex cases were managed with precision and expertise. The experience was invaluable and applying that knowledge to help patients in Northern Ireland has been immensely rewarding.
What is involved in your typical working day?
I start my day with yoga or the gym, to maintain good posture which is essential for my work.
On surgical days, my team and I begin with a comprehensive safety briefing and equipment check before I meet patients to review their treatment plans. Each session typically includes 8-10 surgeries followed by a debrief to refine our approach.
On clinic days, I work closely with the reception and clinical teams to coordinate
appointments. Initial consultations involve vision tests, eye scans, and reviewing a patient’s medical history. I’ll then explain the benefits, risks, and lens options before our care coordinators develop a personalised surgery plan. Post-operative appointments are usually four weeks after surgery, to assess recovery and vision improvement.
What do you like to do outside of work to relax?
I stay active by going to the gym and practicing yoga, benefiting both physical posture, vital with the nature of my work, and my mental well-being. I also love spending time outdoors with my two Bernese Mountain dogs and taking them for walks in the gorgeous hills and forests across Ireland.
With cataracts, what symptoms should people look out for as they develop?
Cataracts develop gradually, causing blurred vision, glare sensitivity, resulting in di culty with daily tasks, particularly driving at night with the glare from car headlights. Frequent prescription changes may also indicate that cataracts are progressing.
Are there any specific risks factors for cataracts and what advice do you have for maintaining good eye health?
Cataracts are a natural part of aging, but diabetes, eye injuries and prior eye surgery can increase the risk.
Good eye health requires a balanced diet, regular exercise, avoiding smoking, and managing conditions like high blood pressure and cholesterol. Regular optometrist check-ups are key to detect early signs of cataracts and other eye conditions. At Solasta, our sub-specialists can provide care tailored to each patient’s needs.
What is the surgical procedure like for cataracts and what is the downtime?
Cataract surgery is a quick and e ective procedure, typically lasting 10-15 minutes, though complex cases may take slightly longer. Performed under local anaesthetic, the cloudy lens is removed using ultrasound technology and replaced with an artificial intraocular lens, that unfolds like an umbrella inside the eye to avoid the need for a large incision. The incisions are so small that stitches are rarely needed.
Recovery is straightforward with eye drops used to reduce inflammation and infection. Light activities can resume quickly, but heavy lifting should be avoided for a short period. Some patients see improvement immediately, while for others, vision stabilises within weeks. A final check at six weeks determines if further correction, like new glasses, is needed.

LYNCHPIN
Playwright Martin Lynch explains why Elvis has entered the building in his new musical commedy, reveals how he got into theatre and tells Jane Hardy why he may give up admin.
In Martin Lynch’s new play, his first for ten years, you could say lvis has entered the building. he musical drama introduces us to Lana, a single mum whose tough life “She does the double” reveals Lynch at a glit y launch at the rand pera ouse upstairs bar is alleviated by a visit from the ing on a hursday evening. e apparently transforms her humdrum e istence, although Martin Lynch won’t reveal how before the play begins, and everything turns hunky dory. he play is a three hander with est nd star orman Bowman as lvis, rla ormley as Lana and busy Caroline Curran as Miriam Magdalen, Lana’s bestie and both a good and naughty influence.
It’s a musical comedy, so lighter in tone than a lot of Lynch’s work. his, after all, is the man who produced the gritty drama ockers, about workers fighting union bosses in Sailortown, who famously penned he istory of the roubles According to my a and who’s known for his portrayal of working class orthern Ireland. “ es, class is important in my work.” It helps define character, e plains motivation and how society works.
But as Martin Lynch reveals, the motto of his theatre companies is a good night out. “ hat’s what we promise.” he role of theatre in entertaining and uplifting audiences is, Lynch feels, crucial in society, “ e don’t support the arts enough, something which matters to artists who need a certain type of engagement where the attention span of people is about eight seconds.” e adds that orthern Ireland gets a much lower financial allocation for culture than Ireland or the U , which rankles. Lynch also notes that theatre workers have a responsibility to find range and sometimes to

challenge audiences, saying, on the plus side, “it is a beautiful, empowering, transformational thing”. Lynch says that with the gifts he has – which include founding two companies, directing the original Maggie Muff outings, writing significant plays that will be performed as long as theatre exists – that truthfulness is important. “I have to be myself.”
Often writers attribute their success to early encouragement at school or college but in Lynch’s case, it was his father’s influence that got him thinking about writing. “Jimmy was a natural storyteller and would read and write poetry which wasn’t that distinguished.” Yet the seed was sown. Lynch remains hopeful about what his job can achieve. “I am hopeful. We’ve come through Covid, the economic crisis. We need uplift in our lives at every opportunity.” Discussing the shortfall in arts funding, Lynch says it’s particularly short sighted as Northern Ireland punches way above its weight in the arts. We name check some of the greats, Neeson to Branagh, also referring to music and sport. “I think it’s maybe because we’re a relatively small community so we have to work really hard. There’s a friendly rivalry between theatre people here but it’s a (creative) furnace.”
Working hard is something which Martin Lynch, now in his seventies, certainly does. Retirement isn’t on the cards, as it rarely is with people who love their work, but he says he may try to cut back on the admin. “It’s tiring and there is a lot of it. Physically my balance isn’t so great now.” And the doyen of theatre here wants to concentrate on the creative side of things, including projects like Thursdays with Elvis which has toured Northern Ireland before settling in for a run at the Grand Opera House in April.
The commercial success which Martin Lynch enjoys comes in part from knowing his customers, the audience. “I think if I can say anything, I’ve learnt to know my audience in great detail. And if you don’t get men and women in, young and old, Catholic and Protestant, you won’t succeed. But a good play is a good play and will always find its audience.”
It was good plays that channelled Lynch’s creative side. “There was an 18-hour play about James Connolly and I was responsible for getting the venue, Queen’s Students’ Union. It was the first
BY JANE HARDY
time I’d seen actors playing and it blew me away. The idea that you had people onstage who could make you laugh and cry…” Later on, Lynch enjoyed dramas such as Sergeant Musgrave’s Dance by John Arden at the old Lyric Theatre. His path was sealed, and it would be quite political. Martin Lynch quotes influences like Arden, the socialist 1960s playwright, and his wife Margaretta D’Arcy who wrote the Connolly play. Also Willy Russell of Educating Rita fame and Alan Bleasdale whose Boys from the Black Stuff was, he felt, seminal. “It certainly resonated with me.” When he began helping out in theatre, Lynch was on the dole. “I was also a part-time student, doing O levels in English Language, Literature, Sociology. But we did it for love.” Nowadays, everything has to be costed and paid for as theatre is Lynch’s business as well as his passion. The former artist in residence at the Lyric and Ulster University knows what he is doing.
His work has had an impact beyond the stalls. When Dockers first came onstage, peace activist Mairead Corrigan was in the audience. His Chronicles of Long Kesh similarly tackled a tough subject with characteristic sensitivity and even touches of humour. There is a scene in which the political prisoners belt out pop music of the era, which is humanising and oddly heartening, even though passages of the play are a tough watch, including the Bobby Sands story among other bits of narrative.
We go on to discuss the loss of the great lyric poet Michael Longley. Apparently, he was something of a mentor to Martin Lynch, writing him notes of encouragement and gaining him necessary funding. “He wrote me letters and put me up for some funding which was great. He was a great mentor to me, although not a playwright.” Lynch says he owed him a lot and he will be greatly missed.
If you summed up Martin Lynch’s achievement, it would take quite a few paragraphs. As he notes, “My plays have been a call for peace in Northern Ireland. We are now through the Troubles and can tackle other things.” Which Martin Lynch is certainly doing.
‘Thursdays With Elvis’ is at Riverside, Coleraine on April 2, Burnavon, Cookstown on April 3 and Down Arts Centre on April 5, then runs at the Grand Opera House Belfast from April 7-12.
Jane Hardy is a feature writer who has interviewed a few of the big names from Arlene Foster to Mrs Thatcher.

Versatility as Standard
Tina was born in Brazil and blessed with a talent for creating handmade garments, a skill she is passionate about. From a young age, she enjoyed the manual skilled work involved in her crafts and disliked mass-produced, machine-made fashion. Crochet appealed to Tina from a very early age, being taught by her grandmother, Ana, as a ten-year-old, and Tina credits her grandmother as her original inspiration.
She learned knitting, painting and crossstitch embroidery, but her favourite craft has always been crochet. Tina loves to pick up a needle and thread and create a luxurious, intricately detailed, seamless dress, something that is magical and unique.
As a young teenager, she was attracted to fashion and art and began making her own clothes because she wanted her clothes to be different from everyone else’s; she quickly discovered a talent for
doing anything with a needle and thread. So began a passion for creating unique pieces to suit the identity of whoever she is making them for - something she finds extremely rewarding, seeing a creation develop from scratch.
As Tina explains, crochet is so versatile: “I love to bring delicacy, finesse, grace and femininity to my creations. I aim to create timeless, unique pieces for every woman and age. Pieces can be created in numerous styles, for any season and any occasion. From beachwear to formal wear, all my clothes are made to fit - not just fit on the body- but fit into world culture, and I make them with that in mind.” She adds: “My process is a very deep and sensual one. When I launched my brand, I wanted to ensure that ethical values were maintained - without realising that it would soon become a trendy topic.”
Sustainability and reducing the impact of pollution on society are now huge focus areas across the globe, and these are values that Tina has always embraced throughout her career. Check out and discover Tina Welsh’s unique approach to crochet.

In the ever-evolving world of aesthetics, one clinic has consistently set the gold standard in aesthetics, wellness, and innovation - A Aesthetics. Recognised as an award-winning clinic and hailed as the best in Northern Ireland and Ireland, A Aesthetics has built a stellar reputation for offering cutting-edge treatments while prioritising patient satisfaction, safety, and natural-looking results.
1. Emerald Laser: The Future of Fat Reduction
One of the standout treatments at A Aesthetics is the Emerald Laser, a revolutionary, non-invasive fat loss procedure. Unlike traditional liposuction or invasive surgeries, the Emerald Laser targets stubborn fat areas using low-level laser therapy, effectively shrinking fat cells without damaging surrounding tissues. The treatment is painless, requires no downtime, and is an excellent option for those looking to contour their body naturally.
2. Micro-Needling: Skin Rejuvenation at Its Best
For patients seeking smoother, firmer, and more youthful skin, micro-needling is a game-changer. This collagen-stimulating treatment works by creating micro-injuries in the skin, triggering the body’s natural healing process. The result? Reduced fine lines, improved skin texture, minimized acne scars, and an overall radiant complexion.
3. Dermal Fillers: Restoring Youthful Volume
A Aesthetics is renowned for its expertise in dermal fillers, a popular treatment used to restore lost volume, enhance facial contours, and soften deep wrinkles. Their skilled practitioners focus on achieving subtle, natural-looking results, ensuring clients leave feeling rejuvenated rather than drastically altered.
4. Pain Clinic: A Holistic Approach to Pain Management
Beyond aesthetics, A Aesthetics is also committed to enhancing overall wellbeing through its dedicated pain clinic. Chronic pain can significantly impact quality of life, and the clinic offers specialised treatments to help patients manage conditions such as arthritis, muscle tension, migraines, and joint pain. Their innovative, non-invasive therapies aim to reduce pain, improve mobility, and enhance overall wellness — making A Aesthetics a true pioneer in integrating beauty and health.

WELLNESS THE FUTURE OF AESTHETIC
A new era in aesthetic medicine is dawning – one that doesn’t rely on trauma, freezing, or invasive interventions to achieve results. Instead, it s a refined, intelligent a roach that works with the body rather than against it. At the forefront of this revolution is Erchonia, whose Emerald and EVRL lasers are redefining beauty and wellness from the inside out.
Erchonia’s Emerald and EVRL lasers work in synergy to reshape the body and revitalise cellular health— supporting detox, energy, and longevity.
In a world saturated with fat-freezing, skinscorching, and downtime-heavy treatments, Erchonia’s laser technology offers something entirely different: science-backed, noninvasive solutions that stimulate the body’s own cellular processes. The result? Visible fat reduction, improved healing, enhanced energy, and a profound sense of physical balance—without a scalpel in sight.
ELEGANT INNOVATION MEETS CLINICAL PRECISION
The Emerald Laser is the only FDA-cleared full-body fat reduction laser suitable for individuals with a BMI of up to 40. Unlike conventional treatments that destroy fat cells often disrupting metabolic health the Emerald uses non-thermal, high energy green laser technology to shrink fat cells safely and naturally. This allows them to function more like those found in lean, healthy individuals, optimising the body’s metabolic performance while avoiding stress and trauma to surrounding tissue.
This subtle and sophisticated approach has proven effective in clinical trials, showing reductions in both fat volume and visible cellulite. As the body processes the released fat through its own detoxification pathways, patients often report feeling lighter, more energised, and revitalised—well beyond aesthetic improvements alone.
TOTAL BODY WELLNESS, NOT JUST CONTOURING
While the Emerald sculpts the silhouette, the EVRL Laser delivers a powerful boost to overall health and recovery. It uses a combination of red and violet laser wavelengths to boost circulation, support tissue repair, and help the body recover from inflammation and pain. Red light stimulates the body’s ability to restore itself, while violet light provides additional antibacterial, antifungal, and immune-boosting benefits.
Used in tandem, these lasers work in synergy to enhance fat metabolism, accelerate healing, and support long-term vitality For those embracing a preventative wellness mindset, this combination offers a compelling alternative to more invasive procedures—and is increasingly becoming the choice of discerning clients seeking to feel as good as they look.
A DOCTOR’S SEAL OF APPROVAL
r Rita Rakus, one of the UK s most esteemed aesthetic doctors, calls this pairing “a true revolution in aesthetic and wellness treatments.” Her London clinic has introduced the merald and RL as part of a holistic wellness programme, and she’s witnessed transformative results first-hand. eyond body shaping, patients have reported improvements in gut health, stress resilience, and even hair vitality further underscoring the system’s systemic regenerative potential.
“In our clinic, we see patients seeking more than cosmetic fixes they want energy, balance, and long-term health,” explains Dr Rakus. rchonia s technology delivers all of this and more, using light to rejuvenate from the cellular level.”
WHERE SCIENCE MEETS STYLE
Erchonia’s approach is rooted in rigorous science and unmatched safety, but it’s the experience of treatment that truly sets it
apart. Sessions are comfortable, pain-free, and utterly free of downtime making them ideal for busy professionals, jet-setters, and wellness aficionados alike.
As the beauty industry continues to evolve, luxury consumers are gravitating towards technologies that embody ef cac , elegance, and integrity. The Emerald and RL lasers exemplify this shift a new standard where aesthetic goals and wellness ambitions are seamlessly aligned.

Skin First, Science Always -With The Aesthetics Guy NI
Chris Flanagan on evidence-based skincare, skin confidence, and why skin health is more than just surface level.
Hi, I’m Chris Flanagan — founder of The Aesthetics Guy NI, advanced skin practitioner, skincare enthusiast, and someone who genuinely loves helping people feel good in their skin.
My journey into aesthetics wasn’t a straight line. With a background in biomedical science, I’ve always been fascinated by how the body works — especially the skin. What began as professional curiosity turned into a passion, and today, I run my own clinic in Newtownabbey, just 15 minutes from Belfast where I offer a mix of advanced skin treatments and subtle, natural aesthetic enhancements.
No fluff, no fads — just proper skincare that works. ” “
The clinic is built on a few key principles: professionalism, results, and a warm, personal touch. I specialise in treatments like FDA-approved Skin Pen microneedling, injectable skin boosters, medical-grade
peels, and Pure Derma Radiofrequency Microneedling — each one tailored to suit the individual. Whether you’re looking to improve skin texture, boost hydration, or simply future-proof your skin, my approach is always based on science and honesty.
I also offer natural lip augmentation and dermal fillers, with a focus on enhancing your existing features — not changing them. My clients often tell me they love how refreshed and confident they feel without ever looking ‘done’. That balance between subtlety and effectiveness is at the heart of everything I do.
And of course, home care matters too. I work with Epionce, an awardwinning, evidence-based skincare brand that complements in-clinic treatments beautifully. It’s gentle, effective, and delivers visible results — perfect for supporting skin between appointments.
What makes my clinic unique is the relationship I build with each client. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or someone I’ve seen for years, I take the time to understand your skin, your goals, and what’s realistic. There’s no onesize-fits-all, and definitely no pressure. Just expert advice, genuine care, and a tailored plan that works for you.
The best part of my job? Seeing people walk out feeling confident, refreshed, and like the best version of themselves. Skincare is more than surface-level — it’s a form of self-care, and I’m here to make it simple, effective, and enjoyable.

This advanced treatment combines the collagen-boosting power of microneedling with the tightening effects of radiofrequency energy. At The Aesthetics Guy NI, we tailor every Pure Derma treatment to your individual skin needs. It’s ideal for:
Softening fine lines and wrinkles
Improving skin texture and tone
Reducing the appearance of acne scars
Tightening slackened or crepey skin

REFRESH AT
Ms Ciara Bowers brings aesthetic plastic surgery to complete the offering at Bloomfield Laser Clinic.
Located in a beautiful coastal lodge in the picturesque village of Groomsport, north Down, Bloomfield Laser Clinic has recently undergone a ‘refresh’ of its own, with Dr Jack de Wolf and Dr Felicity Burnham taking the helm of this highly regarded clinic. Already well known for the expert dermatological and laser service provided, Jack explains that they were keen to extend their medical and surgical aesthetics portfolio. “We’re passionate about providing safe, effective, consultantled treatments for our patients. Dr Handley built a team of consultant dermatologists, a consultant plastic surgeon who specialises in scarring and skin cancer, laser specialist doctors and specialist aesthetic nurses. We were delighted when Ciara got in touch as it feels like it completes the team, and provides the full spectrum of treatment options for our clients.”
We sat down with Miss Ciara Bowers, consultant plastic surgeon, to find out a bit more about what’s next at BLC.
Ciara Bowers
So Ciara, you are originally from Bangor but have spent some time outside Northern Ireland completing your training; is it good to be back home?
Absolutely! I returned last summer with my husband and our three children, and it’s just felt right since day one! I have been very fortunate in my career, working with some excellent mentors across the UK, including the BAAPS Aesthetic Mentorship with Mr Nick Rhodes and his team in Coppergate Clinic, and I continue to practice there. It’s an outstanding clinic providing the full spectrum of surgical and non-surgical treatments to its clients. When I came back home I was looking for a clinic that would provide the same opportunity for exemplary patient care. I found BLC, and Jack and Felicity who have a similar vision; it seemed like the perfect fit.
Dr Felicity Burnham and Dr Jack De Wolf.
You work in both Yorkshire and Northern Ireland - that must be busy, how do you manage?
It certainly is, but I have fantastic support and it’s just about being organised, something every working mum knows! Luckily I really love what I do which makes the long days a lot easier!
What’s your most popular treatment?
Definitely eyelid surgery, known as Blepharoplasty, it clears the crowding of the upper eyelid and reduces the heaviness that lot of people develop as they get older. It’s also one of my favourite procedures to do, the results are natural but often quite dramatic, with lots of my patients saying ‘everyone keeps saying I look great, but they can’t spot what’s different about me”… personally I think that’s a great result!
How would someone know if Blepharoplasty is right for them?
I often get asked this, and it’s different for everyone, for some it’s when they can’t get their eye makeup to sit the way they want it to; for others it’s the feeling of heaviness sitting on their eyelids; some people come in when they can’t see anymore! It’s very individual, but your plastic surgeon should counsel you on what your options are and what is achievable.
Are there any trends in plastic surgery?
There is a noticeable move away from the ‘filled’ look back to a more natural look. Procedures like the lip lift, which are a favourite of mine, are becoming increasingly popular with clients who want the appearance of more volume or definition of their lips without the filled look. We are also seeing more multi-modal treatments, with clinics like BLC able to offer combinations such as upper eyelid surgery and lower eyelid CO2 resurfacing,
as well as other non-surgical options. Having a variety of treatment modalities also allows me to complete treatment plans for my clients; for those who aren’t quite ready for surgery I often discuss with them a ‘five-year plan’ for making the most out of non-surgical options, whilst not compromising and even optimising future surgical options.
What advice would you give to someone who is considering plastic surgery?
Do your research, find a surgeon who is on the specialist register for plastic surgery, this means they are trained in plastic surgery specifically. It is also worth checking the BAAPS (British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons) ‘find a surgeon’ tool which is available on their websites.
I would also say listen to your surgeon, there are lots of social media groups which are useful for research, but each surgeon will give post-procedure advice based on the technique they have used, it’s important to stick to that.
Great advice, last question… What’s the one product you couldn’t do without?
Definitely tinted SPF! I wear it every day, it’s so important to look after your skin, and I’m a big fan of products that make my life just a little bit easier! Bloomfield Laser Clinic The Lodge 1 Donaghadee Road Groomsport BT19 6LG Tel: 028 9127 5737

The Transformative Power of Micropigmentation Camouflage
At Cathedral Dermatology, Micropigmentation
Camouflage is offering new hope for those looking to reduce the appearance of scars, vitiligo, burns, acne scarring, skin grafts, and stretchmarks.
The Science
Micropigmentation camouflage places colour pigment on the top layer of the dermis using precise microneedling techniques. The process involves carefully matching the client’s natural skin tone to effectively camouflage areas of concern.
Safety remains paramount, with patch testing conducted prior to treatment to ensure no adverse reactions. For many patients, the journey begins with inkless microneedling sessions, which stimulate natural collagen production to improve skin quality before adding pigment.
Natural Results
The treatment delivers significant improvement with minimal downtime. For many, the
psychological impact extends far beyond cosmetic improvements, as scars often serve as reminders of difficult experiences.
tolerated, with any discomfort being brief. The healing process typically takes about a week, depending on the treatment area.
Is This Treatment Right for You?
Micropigmentation camouflage is particularly beneficial for post-surgery patients, those with burn scars, individuals with scarring from accidents, and patients undergoing surgical reconstruction.
However, the treatment isn’t suitable for everyone. Those with hypertrophic and keloid scarring tendencies, port wine marks, certain autoimmune conditions like lupus, or active blood-borne viral infection should explore alternative options.
Technology and Aftercare
Cathedral Dermatology utilises the awardwinning Vogue machine — a highly rated medical-grade device recognised for its performance in micropigmentation camouflage.
Aftercare is crucial for optimal results. This includes keeping the treated area protected for the first 48 hours, using specialised sprays with anti-bacterial properties, and avoiding sun exposure until complete healing occurs. Most patients find the procedure well-
Personalised Approach
Treatment plans are customised, based on individual needs. Inkless microneedling typically requires three sessions spaced six weeks apart. For those receiving pigmentation, follow-up assessments ensure the colour remains natural and well-blended.
“Every patient’s skin and circumstances are unique,” Dr. Murphy emphasises.
“The camouflage team will develop personalised treatment plans that deliver meaningful results for each individual.”

The Game Changer In Facial And Body Contouring
From The Makers Of Morpheus8
Quantum RF: The Game-Changer in facial and body contouring - The Perfect Solution for ‘Ozempic Face’. The demand for body and facial contouring treatments is soaring, with patients seeking solutions that offer natural-looking results and minimal downtime. One of the latest breakthroughs in this field is Quantum RF technology, which is redefining facial and body contouring with unmatched precision and effectiveness.
Why Quantum RF?
Unlike traditional radiofrequency (RF) treatments, Quantum RF offers deeper penetration, enhanced energy delivery, and superior tissue contraction, making it ideal for those looking to tighten loose skin, improve elasticity, and restore youthful contours. IgniteRF, a leading device in this category, utilises multiple synergistic modalities to maximise results.
The Answer to ‘Ozempic Face’
With the rise of weight-loss drugs like Ozempic, many patients experience significant facial volume loss, commonly known as ‘Ozempic Face’ - a gaunt, hollow appearance due to rapid fat reduction. While fillers can restore lost volume, they don’t address skin laxity. Quantum RF, however, stimulates collagen production and tightens sagging skin, offering a natural and long-lasting alternative.
Unparalleled Results with IgniteRF
IgniteRF goes beyond traditional RF treatments by offering precision control, deeper penetration (up to 60mm), and greater functionality, allowing practitioners to customise treatments for each patient’s needs. Whether tightening skin, enhancing the definition, or improving overall texture, this advanced platform delivers faster, more effective results with less discomfort and downtime.
As the demand for Facial contouring grows, Quantum RF is setting a new standard - ensuring patients achieve a sculpted, youthful appearance. IgniteRF is the ultimate solution for today’s aesthetic needs.

Hair loss is a concern that can affect anyone
Hair loss can impact not just appearance but also self-esteem. At Marlborough Clinic
Belfast, we understand the significant role hair plays in a person’s confidence.
Our clinic offers Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE), a minimally invasive hair transplant technique performed under local anaesthetic by Dr Andrew McCleery.
Dr McCleery’s patient-centred approach ensures that each patient’s journey with us is personalised and comfortable. During the clinical consultation, patients share their concerns about hair loss. Dr McCleery completes a medical and hair loss history, examines the scalp, and takes photographs. This thorough assessment allows him to create a bespoke treatment plan tailored to the patient’s realistic hair restoration goals.
We explain the treatment plan in detail, including cost, treatment process, expected results, and any pre/postoperative care instructions. Our goal is to ensure patients are fully informed and confident about their decision.
Transparency is key at Marlborough Clinic Belfast, and we strive to provide clear and comprehensive information at every step.
FUE hair transplant surgery can have lifechanging effects for suitable candidates.
This advanced technique involves extracting individual hair follicles from a donor area and transplanting them to thinning or bald areas, resulting in naturallooking hair growth. The minimally invasive nature of FUE means there is no cutting of a strip, leading to quicker recovery times and less discomfort for patients.
Most patients start seeing their desired results after around 12 months of growth, with the full outcome taking up to 18 months. Our clinic is committed to supporting patients throughout this journey. The entire patient journey is
conducted locally at our RQIA approved clinic in Belfast, ensuring convenience and quality care.
Dr Andrew McCleery supported by his team of hair transplant surgical assistants exclusively treats one patient per day in our dedicated hair transplant suite which has been designed for your comfort and privacy.
If you’re considering a hair transplant, we invite you to schedule a consultation with Dr McCleery. Let us help you take the first step towards restoring your hair and confidence. At Marlborough Clinic Belfast, we are dedicated to helping you achieve your hair restoration goals locally with dignity and compassion.
Your Local Destination for Hair Transplant Surgery
Hair loss is a concern that can affect anyone and like many conditions, there is no singular explanation.
A hair transplant moves hair to an area of the scalp that is thin or bald. It can be an effective procedure for those who have lost hair and have already tried other hair loss treatments.
The hair transplant technique available at Marlborough Clinic Belfast is called Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE). FUE is a minimally invasive treatment (no cutting of a strip) and is carried out under local anaesthetic by Dr Andrew McCleery.
Our bespoke hair transplants are designed to meet your individual hair restoration goals, beginning with a comprehensive informative clinical consultation with Dr McCleery.

1 MILLION TREATMENTS MAKE EMFACE THE FASTEST-GROWING FACIAL LIFTING PROCEDURE IN THE CATEGORY
Discover how EMFACE has become the fastest-adopted noninvasive facial lifting treatment, while toning facial muscles and enhancing skin quality without injections or surgery
EMFACE procedures have been performed globally, making it the fastest-adopted non-invasive facial lifting procedure of its kind in history. In the rapidly evolving field of aesthetic medicine, non-invasive treatments have gained tremendous traction, but it is primarily the breakthrough concept of EMFACE that drives its rising popularity.
‘The face has always been people’s number one concern when it comes to aesthetics,’ says Dr Leopoldo de Velasco, a certified dermatologist from Mexico City.
‘What we are seeing now, however, is a growing preference for procedures that are not only less invasive but also deliver more natural results. This shift is steering focus away from traditional interventions that tend to be more aggressive or require injections,’ he adds.
Understanding facial ageing beyond the skin
For years, non-surgical facial treatments have primarily focused on the outer layers of the face – specifically the dermis. However, deeper facial structures, including muscles, play a crucial role in the ageing process. As muscles lose tone over time, they contribute to facial sagging and the downward pull of the upper tissue layers. ‘Imagine this as two opposing forces. We use all these devices to keep the skin tight, but the underlying structure is pulling everything down like a weight. It’s a fight we can’t win,’ describes Dr Peter Peng, ISDS Treasurer and DASIL President-Elect, Taiwan.
EMFACE addresses these limitations by targeting and toning facial muscles without the need for injections or surgery, transforming the landscape of facial rejuvenation. Dr Carolyn Jacob, a Harvard-trained
cosmetic surgeon and board-certified dermatologist from Chicago, Illinois, explains: ‘Treating the skinwhether through resurfacing, injectables, or collagen stimulation - only provides partial improvement. EMFACE is the first non-invasive, hands-free procedure that selectively tones elevator muscles while simultaneously improving the skin, creating a more natural and effective lifting effect.’
How EMFACE works
EMFACE utilises synchronised radiofrequency and high-intensity muscle stimulation (HIFES™) to specifically target facial elevator muscles. Depending on the applicator used, these include the zygomaticus major and minor, frontalis, anterior belly of the digastric, and the lower portion of the orbicularis oculi.
‘By restoring muscle tone, EMFACE helps reposition the face to its youthful structure. This has not been possible with any other energy-based device or injectable,’ summarises Dr Mustafa Karatas, owner of a medical aesthetic clinic in Istanbul and one of the first-ever users of neurotoxins and fillers in Turkey. By addressing the foundational structures of the face, the procedure increases cheek volume, smooths facial wrinkles, and lifts the eyebrows.
A versatile and expanding platform
Over the past year, EMFACE has continuously evolved, offering even more possibilities to medical practitioners. The platform now includes two additional procedures – EMFACE Submentum, designed for jawline contouring, and EMFACE Eyes for periorbital rejuvenation, targeting eye bags, dark circles and crow’s feet. Both double

chin and eye bags rank among the top concerns for patients seeking aesthetic treatments. This expansion has made EMFACE one of the most versatile energy-based devices for facial rejuvenation. ‘What I like about EMFACE is that it keeps evolving, allowing us to offer more and more treatments to our patients’, shares Dr Jacob, one of the first EMFACE practitioners globally.
Why top injectors choose EMFACE
The aesthetics industry is shifting towards less aggressive, more natural-looking treatments. EMFACE’s rise aligns perfectly with this trend, enabling practitioners to achieve noticeable lifting and firming without the risk of overfilling or the frozen expressions often associated with excessive injectables.
According to Dr de Velasco, an internationally recognised trainer and spokesperson for multiple injectable companies, EMFACE is revolutionising the way injectables are used.
‘By performing EMFACE before, we can achieve more natural-looking results with less filler and toxin,’ says Dr de Velasco. ‘This aligns with the growing trend in aesthetic medicine toward subtler, more natural enhancements. Patients love that they can maintain their facial expressiveness while still looking refreshed and lifted.’
EMFACE has rapidly become a staple in aesthetic clinics worldwide, both as a standalone treatment and as part of combination therapies. Several leading aesthetic practitioners have praised EMFACE for its innovative approach to facial lifting. Dr Peng highlights its advantages in clinical settings. ‘What sets EMFACE apart is its ability to tone facial muscles while simultaneously enhancing skin quality. This dual-action approach provides results that are more balanced and long-lasting compared to traditional treatments that only address one aspect of ageing,’ he explains.
Dr Karatas further notes that the treatment is particularly effective for patients in their 30s and 40s who are noticing early signs of ageing but are not yet ready for surgical interventions. ‘These patients often seek ways to maintain their youthful appearance without undergoing invasive procedures. EMFACE offers them a powerful, preventive solution.’
One of the standout features of EMFACE is its completely hands-free application, ensuring a seamless and comfortable patient experience. Unlike injectables, which require precise administration by a skilled provider, EMFACE can be applied without the need for extensive manual manipulation, making it a highly efficient option for busy aesthetic clinics.
Patients report that the treatments are comfortable, often describing the sensation as a mild tingling or muscle contractions. Dr Jacob explains: ‘One of the biggest concerns patients have with traditional procedures is pain and downtime. EMFACE eliminates both of those concerns. Patients can resume their daily activities immediately, a significant advantage for those with busy lifestyles.’

Leading the market with 1 million treatments
Now used in more than 90 countries, EMFACE’s rapid expansion is a testament to its effectiveness and versatility. It has gained significant traction across North America, Latin America, Europe, and Asia, cementing its status as a leader in non-invasive facial rejuvenation. Reaching the 1-million milestone at this pace is unprecedented.
‘In our clinic, the treatment continues to rise in popularity. Patients are increasingly aware of the role muscles play in ageing. With EMFACE expanding to four unique procedures, we can now treat different areas of the face and neck, attracting an even broader range of patients,’ concludes Dr Velasco.
With over 17 peer-reviewed studies and more ongoing research, EMFACE’s effectiveness is supported by strong scientific data. As the aesthetic industry shifts away from overfilling and embraces more natural-looking enhancements with reduced filler use, EMFACE aligns with this trend by offering a comprehensive approach to facial rejuvenation. With the recent introduction of EMFACE Submentum and EMFACE Eyes, the treatment now provides full-face coverage. Meanwhile, BTL, the company behind EMFACE, remains committed to further expanding the platform. Ongoing advancements in protocols ensure that EMFACE stays at the forefront of non-invasive aesthetics.
Experts predict that EMFACE will continue evolving, adding new features to further improve patient outcomes. ‘We haven’t seen any technology advance this quickly,’ says Dr Karatas excitedly. ‘This is just the beginning,’ says Dr Peng. ‘As research progresses, we will likely see even more applications for EMFACE, solidifying its role as an essential tool in modern aesthetic medicine.’

AOIBHIN:
1. How do you approach consultations?
It is of the utmost importance that patients feel comfortable, heard and understood. It is paramount that each patient has a thorough consultation to discuss their needs and concerns. This is why we have an in-depth face-to-face consultation to ensure patient safety, clarity and satisfaction.
2. What is the most common cosmetic surgery procedure?
Breast augmentation continues to be the most common, followed by breast reduction, liposuction and abdominoplasty (tummy tuck). Facial surgery is also on the increase. Advancements in techniques allow beautifully subtle and sophisticated results. Again, the key is choosing only the most reputable and experienced of providers. The skill of your surgeon is of paramount importance.
3. What about size, what is the average increase?
The majority of our patients go from an A cup to just a C cup. We’re talking a subtle increase in volume, a more feminine shape and most importantly, natural looking results.
4. What kind of support do patients receive at River Medical to ensure a smooth and safe recovery?
Patients are invited back to the clinic to meet with their surgeon for their postoperative appointments to ensure a smooth healing process and that we have delivered optimal results.
Our patients can call me or one of our nurses, day or night. Generally, of course, they don’t need to, and they just pop back in to see us, one week post-surgery and then six weeks post-surgery.
5. In your experience, how does combining surgical procedures like a facelift or neck lift with non-surgical treatments enhance patient outcomes?
Combining surgical procedures with non-surgical solutions such as BBL and ablative lasers significantly enhances patient outcome and satisfaction as surgery addresses the underlying structures whilst laser improves the skin surface. Patients will undergo laser procedures prior to their surgery date to improve skin quality and enhance skin strength, prepping the skin for surgery and post operatively to build and enhance results. We will soon have the option to use our ablative lasers during the patient’s surgical procedure, meaning our surgeon can use high energy levels, treating
deeper into the skin, all whilst the patient is under sedation. This dual approach achieves significant and long-lasting results.
6.What advice would you give to someone considering cosmetic surgery but feeling unsure about taking the next step?
My biggest piece of advice for anyone considering cosmetic surgery but feeling unsure is to take your time, do your research, and speak to experienced professionals. At River Medical, we prioritise patient safety, education, and achieving natural-looking results. A consultation is the perfect opportunity to ask questions, express any concerns, and understand what’s realistically achievable for your body and goals. It’s completely normal to feel nervous, but knowing you’re in the hands of a highly skilled surgical team with a strong focus on aftercare can provide peace of mind. Cosmetic surgery is a personal decision, and the right choice is the one that makes you feel confident and comfortable.
Take that first step by getting in touch with us — you’re never under any obligation, but having the right information can make all the difference.

The Future Of Beauty
How Aesthetic Treatments are Evolving
The Changing Face of Beauty!
The world of aesthetics has come a long way. It’s no longer about anti-aging, today’s treatments focus on enhancing natural beauty, boosting confidence and improving skin health. At Riverside Aesthetics we believe in a tailored approach, helping our clients look and feel their best with the latest advancements in non surgical aesthetics.
The Rise of Non-Invasive Treatments
Gone are the days when beauty enhancements meant drastic procedures with long recovery times. Now treatments like Dermal Filler and Skin Boosters offer subtle, natural looking results without downtime. Laser Skin Rejuvenation, Micro-needling and Chemicals Peels we find are the ‘go to” favourites along with evidence based skincare for stimulating collagen and treating concerns like acne scars and pigmentation.
Personalised Beauty - The Power of Bespoke Treatments
One of the biggest trends in aesthetics is customisation. No two faces are the same, which is why we at Riverside Aesthetics prioritise personalised consultations. Whether it’s a hydrating skin booster for a radiant glow or a carefully placed filler to restore volume, our goal is always enhancement, not transformation.
The
Science of Skin Health
Beyond aesthetics, our focus is long-term skin health. Many treatments work by stimulating the body’s natural processes, whether it’s collagen production through radiofrequency or deep hydration with Profhilo. Preventative treatments are also on the rise, with more people starting skincare and anti-aging treatments in their 20s and 30s to maintain youthful skin.
Looking Ahead: The Future of Aesthetics
With new technology emerging, the future of aesthetics looks promising. Innovations like regenerative medicine, evidencebased skincare and advanced laser treatments are set to redefine how we care for our skin. At Riverside Aesthetics we stay ahead of the curve, ensuring our clients receive the best science-backed treatments available.

MILL STRAND INTEGRATED PRIMARY SCHOOL AND NURSERY
MILL STRAND’S NEW CAMPUS IS OFFICIALLY OPENED
Education Minister Paul Givan MLA visited Mill Strand Integrated Primary School and Nursery on 25 October 2024 to officially open the new campus on the Ballywillan Road in Portrush.
The £8.5 million new-build school is the culmination of a twenty-year journey, providing it with handbook-compliant accommodation for the first time in its 37-year history.
Built around a central courtyard, the school provides a sheltered outdoor learning space, as well as maximising natural light and a strong sense of connection through the simplicity of its design. Above all, the new school has retained a sense of its history, identity and core values as depicted on the mural that dominates the façade of the school, with a strong sense of welcome in the foyer.
The minister and guests were warmly welcomed by Louise Rossington, chair of governors, before the school entertained guests with ‘When I Grow Up,’ from the musical Matilda. Then Professor Alan Smith enlightened everyone on the perspective of those who helped found the school in 1987.Paul Givan MLA was joined on stage by three generations of staff, founders and pupils representing the history of the school, before cutting a ribbon to mark the
official opening and the end of the 20-year journey to get to this stage. Actor James Nesbitt added a special touch to the event with an address that gave a very honest and heart-warming perspective on Integrated Education and the contribution of Mill Strand IPS and Nursery to the Portrush community. Past pupil Flynn Espie had everyone enthralled with his poem telling the story of the last Year 7 pupils at the old Dhu Varren site and the Class of 2024.
The 20-year journey to the new school was central to Philip Reid’s speech, as outgoing principal, as he outlined the challenges faced over the past two decades and paid tribute to the many people that made the dreams of the founders a reality.

BALLYMONEY MODEL INTEGRATED PRIMARY SCHOOL
Ballymoney Model Integrated Primary School celebrates 15 Years of Integrated Education
This year marks a special milestone for our school as we celebrate 15 years of being an integrated community, where unity, diversity and inclusion are embedded within our ethos, vision and values. In relation to this special anniversary, we’ve hosted a variety of enjoyable and meaningful events that have brought together pupils, staff, governors and families, each one reflecting the vibrant spirit of our school.
The celebrations began in December with our Key Stage 2 Carol Service, where pupils delivered heartwarming performances, filling the hall with the warmth and joy of the season and sharing the important message of Christmas.
As is our tradition, we dedicate March to celebrating our integrated status and this year’s festivities featured additional activities. Two tea towel designs were created, which included every pupil, staff member, and even Rosie, our therapy dog who joined our school in November. This activity created a wonderful keepsake for families to cherish for years to come.
Another unforgettable moment was the special assembly, which welcomed back Mr. McVeigh, our former principal, who played a key role in the school’s transformation to integration, and Mr. Witherow, the Chair of the Board of Governors for the past fifteen years. The assembly featured performances from our four choirs, who recently achieved accolades at the Coleraine Music Festival. Following this, pupils had great fun decorating and enjoying their very own cupcake and in the afternoon, we joined together in the front playground for a special 5 photo shoot
and
A fantastic celebration concert was held at Ballymoney Town Hall at the end of March, featuring two incredible performances - Matilda by Year 5 and Mary Poppins by Year 6 and Year 7. The concert showcased the immense talent within our school community, from musical acts to dramatic performances. The evening ended with a disco which everyone en oyed

Dubshed, Northern Ireland’s largest automotive event, based at the Eikon Exhibition Centre, is hosted by the team at GTINI. Gethin Evans reflects on Dubshed’s Journey: From Modest Beginnings to Eikon Exhibition Centre.
THE EARLY DAYS AT THE KING’S HALL.
Celebrating 10 Years of the Eikon Exhibition Centre
As the Eikon Exhibition Centre celebrates its 10th anniversary, Gethin Evans, co-founder of the much-loved Dubshed event, looks back on the incredible journey of a show that started in a modest shed at the King’s Hall complex and grew to become one of the premier automotive showcases in Ireland.
“It all began with a simple idea and a shed,” Gethin recalls with a smile. “We had no grand plans back then—just a shared passion for cars and a desire to bring like-minded enthusiasts together. The King’s Hall complex gave us a space to turn that idea into reality.”
The early years were defined by a sense of community and creativity. “There was a magic about those days,” Gethin says.
“The King’s Hall had a character of its own, and we made the most of every inch of the space we had. People came because they shared our enthusiasm, and that’s what made it special.”
A NEW ERA AT THE EIKON EXHIBITION CENTRE
When the Royal Ulster Agriculture Society (proprietors of the Eikon Exhibition Centre) relocated to Balmoral Park in Lisburn, Dubshed moved with it—a transition that opened doors Gethin and his team could only have dreamed of in those early days.
“The move to Balmoral Park was transformative,” he reflects.
Gethin pauses to reflect on the profound impact of this remarkable partnership, which began 15 years ago at the Kings Hall. “The team has been far more than just a venue provider—they’ve been collaborators, advisors, and true champions of our work. From our early days at the King’s Hall to our journey at the Eikon, their support has been instrumental in our growth. They’ve given us the space to evolve while guiding us along the way. Through this partnership, we’ve built strong relationships and a level of trust that no other venue could match.”
Over the past decade, Dubshed has grown into a landmark event for car enthusiasts across Ireland and beyond, a transformation Gethin in part attributes to the unique opportunities the venue facilities offer. “The facilities here are second to none, and the flexibility of the space lets us get creative in ways we never thought possible.”
LOOKING AHEAD
As Dubshed continues to thrive, Gethin and the Dubshed team are already thinking about the future. “Every year, we aim to make the event better than the last, and with the Eikon Centre’s support, we’ve been able to do that. I’m excited to see what the next 10 years will bring—not just for Dubshed, but for the venue and its other events too.”
“It gave us the room to grow and to think bigger. Suddenly, we had the Eikon Hall, the Logan Hall, the main arena, and a vast outdoor space at our disposal. It wasn’t just a new venue—it was a new chapter.”
With the increased space and state-of-the-art facilities, Dubshed was able to expand far beyond its original scope.
“We could welcome more exhibitors, showcase more cars, and create experiences that simply weren’t possible before. The operations team at the Eikon supported us every step of the way, helping us make the most of what the venue had to offer.”
Offering his congratulations to the Eikon Exhibition Centre team, Gethin adds, “Thank you for believing in our vision and helping us bring it to life. You’ve been instrumental in making Dubshed what it is today, and I’m grateful for the partnership we’ve built over the years.”
For Gethin Evans and the Dubshed team, the journey from a shed at the King’s Hall to the expansive grounds of Balmoral Park has been nothing short of remarkable. As they celebrate the Eikon Centre’s 10th anniversary, there’s a shared sense of pride in what’s been achieved—and a sense of excitement for what lies ahead.

Local business owners aim to work with relevant bodies on key issues to generate new opportunities and to promote community development. By creating a welcoming and friendly atmosphere, we hope to increase community participation eg through the organisation of village events.

EUROVISION STAR OF TOMORROW?
DELISHUS MR is a passionate, creative and dedicated award-winning recording artist and songwriter from Belfast.
Enter DELISHUS MR, a successful performance artist with an enormous 3.6 octave counter tenor range. Over the last 12 months Delishus has slowly moved away from singing covers and drag art, with a new focus towards electronic dance music (EDM). The talented singer/songwriter had an enormous hit with Take Me Out last year which received much acclaim, along with a little controversy, all of which increased the performer’s popularity and public profile.
The song was originally submitted for Ireland’s Eurosong to represent Ireland but failed to make the final six. The fact that it was so well received, however, encouraged Delishus to launch the song on YouTube. He had a huge surprise when the song reached an impressive 150k views on YouTube, more views than he could have hoped for. After Bambi Thug was selected to represent Ireland for the Eurovision, Delishus decided to team up with the incredible Loraa White, CEO of Music Video Marketplace, to create an exciting pop video. The pop video was filmed in three different locations showing the three stages of heartbreak which so many people can relate to. Delishus launched the official pop video on YouTube with enormous success during Eurovision and Pride Month, when the song reached half a million views with many likes and positive comments.
The song was eligible for two Northern Ireland Music Prize Awards but failed to be shortlisted. However, the “Take Me Out” project won four Integrity Magazine awards for best LGBTQ+ song, video, producer and
recording artist. Only last month the song was awarded International Music Magazine’s Best LGBTQ+ Song And Video. Delishus was also nominated for a Belfast Pride and NI Social Media Award along with two GNI Magazine award nominations. Even the prestigious LGBTQ+ Galas in Ireland recognised Delishus as the one of the final four for the Arts and Entertainment Award from a shortlist of 64 nominations. At the end of the year, The Northern Ireland Arts Council recognised Delishus as a potential arts grant recipient but were very disappointed they didn’t have enough money to invest into the next music project due to reduced funding.
However, Delishus has invested an enormous amount of time and hard work with his current project, Three May Keep A Secret, which is due out for Eurovision month with a striking new image. The song, like Take Me Out, was recorded in Black Studios, produced by the super-talented Jessica Hammond and again the pop video filmed by Loraa White. Delishus is also in talks with a potential manager who manages some of the biggest names in music and has plans to release more exciting music later this year.
The new image, and moving into electronic dance music will hopefully open more doors for DELISHUS MR. He also hopes to represent Ireland for the Eurovision in the future but, most of all, dreams of representing the people of Northern Ireland on the international stage.

LAUNCH OF AFTER THE PARTY
No Alibis bookshop recently held the launch of the new book from crime writer Sharon Dempsey. After the Party, which was launched by Seamus Heaney Centre director Glenn Patterson, is an exploration of research Sharon carried out on class and gender in crime fiction as part of her practice-led PhD project at Queen’s University. The book tells the story of a young woman named Georgia, her battle for justice and the lengths some mothers will go to protect their sons.
When Georgia is raped by three boys from influential families after a house party, she decides to speak out… only to face cruel accusations and backlash in response. As she fights to reclaim her truth, the boys mothers use every resource to shield their sons from accountability. Georgia’s attempts to take revenge from these boys and their families seemingly end in failure. Torn between rage and resilience, Georgia’s struggle for justice becomes a test of her strength against a web of influence, deceit and denial.
The launch saw No Alibis packed to the rafters, with Sharon delighted to be supported by the Seamus Heaney Centre as well as family, friends, and members of the wider arts community.
Although Sharon’s career started as a ournalist, she took the first step towards becoming a professional novelist after being awarded funding from the Arts Council of Northern Ireland. She said: “It felt like validation that what I was writing was worth something and I started treating it like a professional undertaking rather than a secret hobby.”
Sharon’s crime debut, Little Bird, was published in July 2017. Since then she has gone from strength to strength with her literary endeavours. And this book shows just what a compelling and powerful voice she has. After the Party is an unflinching exploration of trauma, the dark side of a mother’s love and raises timely questions over where responsibility lies for toxic masculinity and misogyny in young men.
Sharon Dempsey, whose writing is inspired by true stores and what is going on in the world around her, is an authentic, compelling and thought-provoking voice in the Northern Ireland literary landscape. And this latest offering shows she is at the peak of her craft.

OPENING OF ‘MAKERS WHO TEACH’
It was a case of those who can, teach, at Craft NI as it hosted the 2025 edition of ‘Makers Who Teach’ exhibition. The theme, Me. Here. Now, highlighted the creative practices of makers who teach others as part of their overall practice, whether it’s in classrooms, workshops and communities.
The show focuses on their current creative endeavours and it shines a spotlight on their recent works, ensuring they are seen and appreciated not only as teachers, but also as makers.
On the opening night of the exhibition, guests included exhibiting artists such as Heather Burgess, Theresa Kelly, Natasha Duddy and Alison Gault, to name a few.
Also in attendance was the talented Tracey Johnston. Tracey, who created the Ulster Tatler awards in 2024, also featured in the exhibition and showcased her International Women’s day celebratory artwork, ‘La Primavera’.
This exhibition features a dynamic collection of ideas, mediums and influences, from textile art, ewellery, glass, ceramics or interdisciplinary installations. Particular highlights for me included Maggie Napier’s stunning flameworked glass statement necklace; Natasha Duddy’s delicate fused glass ornamental works; and Nichola Dalton’s strong textural vessel inspired by Lough Neagh.
The opening night of Me. Here. Now: Makers Who Teach exhibition was strongly attended, with visitors being treated to a rare glimpse into these makers’ private inner worlds - and the creativity, talent and inspiration they contain. The exhibition runs until 2 May; I thoroughly recommend checking it out while you still can.

OPENING OF THE VELVETEEN RABBIT
When I heard writer Jan Carson and composer Duke Special had teamed up to pen a new musical adaptation of Margery Williams’ beloved children’s classic, The Velveteen Rabbit, I was beyond excited.
The heart-warming story, which inspired the hit isney-Pixar film series Toy Story, is about a young boy, his favourite toy, and the transformative power of love.
When Wee Man receives a bunny as a present, he never expects the extraordinary adventures that await them. But with a little imagination, and some Nursery Magic, his floppy-eared friend springs to life, turning the ordinary into the unforgettable.
A Lyric Theatre and Replay Theatre co-production, this imaginative adaptation, which was part of the wonderful Belfast Children’s Festival, is a magical tale for all ages.
I attended the opening night at the Lyric Theatre with my 10-year-old niece and we both left truly enchanted by this remarkable adaptation. old, colourful and filled with humour, multifaceted performances and catchy songs, the 90-minute run time flew by. Although Tara Wilkes excelled at capturing the playful, curious and frivolous ‘Wee Man’ and Jack Watson’s ‘Velveteen Bunny’ exuded endearing innocence and naivety, it was Rosie Barry who stole the show for me playing the dual roles of ‘Robbo’ and ‘Nursery Magic Fairy’. Robotic and conceited as a toy robot one moment, and flamboyant, witty and vulnerable the next as Nursery Magic airy, her flexibility in depicting two polar opposite characters was a wonder to behold. Another remarkable quality of the production was the versatility of the actors who effortlessly transitioned from performing to singing and playing instruments. The dynamic was captivating and the musical quality of this production really added to its overall charm.
With a smile from ear to ear by the time of the final curtain, it seems an Carson and uke Special s The elveteen Rabbit was more than worth the wait.

UPGS AT KIRKISTOWN GOLF CLUB
The first event of the new Ulster Press Golf Society season saw 43 players out at Kirkistown Castle Golf Club. Kirkistown, as always, was well presented, with the greens running true and fast and the course a delight to play. The Society extends thanks to Leona Thompson (general manager) and Niall Mullen (club professional) and their staff for the help in getting the 2025 Ulster Press Golf Society season off to a flying start at this fine venue on the Ards Peninsula. The overall winner on the day was Paul Kelly, with a very tidy 40 points, which was good enough for him to lift the Society Western Railes Trophy for 2025. The runner-up was Noel McCartney with 39 points.
Waiting for the off at Kirkistown Castle were
L to R: Alan Clements, Andy Dennison, Neil McKnight and Jack Brennan.
L to R: Roddy O’Flaherty, Ronan Henry, John Haughey and Gareth McCaffrey at Kirkistown.
On the 1st tee at Kirkistown Castle Golf Club for the season opener were L to R: Joe Kearney, Martin Jordan, James Rogers and Paddy Tyndall.
