T

he summer holidays are already on my mind; I think I need to get some sun. When it comes to planning family holidays, we’re usually quite last-minute, often having difficulty in reaching a consensus regarding destination, dates, etc (First World problems, or what?). Not this year, however. One recent Sunday I suggested we plan a trip to Barcelona for a week this summer and, unusually, we had everything booked by the end of the day. It may not be the most adventurous of destinations but it ticks lots of boxes: the young folk love to hang out by the beach, where we are staying, while my wife and I enjoy exploring all the city has to offer. Here’s hoping the locals don’t chase us out of town. And finally, huge thanks to our wonderful columnist, Kathy Clugston, who is signing off in this issue. For several years now, her monthly musings have entertained and enlightened our readers. Kathy has given us all much food for thought and she will be greatly missed.

COLUMN March 2025

LIFE & TIMES EDITED BY KATHY CLUGSTON

Kathy Clugston is a freelance radio presenter. She chairs the long-running BBC Radio 4 programme ‘Gardeners’ Question Time’ and presents the weekly entertainment show ‘The Ticket’ on BBC Radio Ulster.

So Long, Farewell This month, Kathy says goodbye as she takes up a new challenge. This is my final column for the magazine. I have taken on another radio role as host of Sunday Club on BBC Radio Ulster and, unfortunately, something had to give. Sunday Club, as I’m sure many of you know, was presented for over 40 years by the much loved broadcaster John Bennett, who died in July 2024 at the age of 82. The word ‘legend’ is overused but not, I think, in John’s case. John was famous, certainly, but also the stuff of stories. He gave many younger colleagues a break; they loved working with him, learning from him and hearing tales of the many famous names he had interviewed. John knew a lot about music, having started as a folk singer in the 1960s and of course he knew all about radio – he was the first voice on the newly launched BBC Radio Ulster in 1974. Over the years, John worked at all times of day, in all genres, including sport and current affairs, but it’s his role as the President of Sunday Club that will be most fondly remembered. He amassed a dedicated, loyal following and taking the helm of such a beloved show is daunting, but, like John, I love music from the ‘Golden Age’ of the twentieth century, I love live radio and there is nothing better for me than broadcasting late at night. I hope I will do him proud. It’s good to challenge ourselves as we get older, if we can. When I was invited by Ulster Tatler’s editor Chris to take on this column, my first thought was, “but I’ve nothing to

write about!” All the same, I wanted to see if I could do it. I thought I might manage to squeeze out enough ideas for one year - 12 columns - but I ended up writing 50, with another two provided by my Mum, who’s 85 and wanted to rise to the challenge herself. People often ask where I get my ideas from and the answer, I suppose, is ‘anywhere and everywhere’. This column in this magazine isn’t the place for divisive or inflammatory opinions, so I had to find topics from my everyday life that might be of broader interest. I kept a Word document into which I chucked any ideas I thought might make a good starting point. I’m looking at it now and reviewing what didn’t make the cut. I think you’ll agree we can all live without the following: how getting an electric blanket changed my life; songs whose lyrics I have never understood; phrases that should be banned e.g. ‘going forward’; bizarre modern categories of sexuality (allosexual, sapiosexual etc…look them up if you dare); YouTube videos in which young women relate a gruesome true crime story while putting on a full face of makeup; why I never leave home without tweezers;

how to divorce your phone. To be fair, that last one would have been good. Go into the settings menu on your phone and see how many hours you use it every day, you’ll be mortified. Thank you so much for reading. It’s a real thrill when someone stops me to say they’ve enjoyed something I’ve written. I don’t think of it as the end, though. As you know, old Ulster Tatlers never die, they turn up in waiting rooms and salons long after the people inside have ceased to be. And given the extremely high quality of the paper, it may turn out to be my longest legacy.

THIS MONTH’S OBSESSIONS: THE BOY FROM THE SEA – Debut adult novel by the Irish writer Garrett Carr, who teaches creative writing at the Seamus Heaney Centre at QUB. The novel is set in a fishing village in Donegal. A fisherman finds an abandoned baby and brings him home, opening up various fracture lines in his own family and that of his wife. Our narrator is the communal voice of the townsfolk, an inspired device, and it’s very funny too.

NO ALIBIS – This Belfast bookshop is a perennial favourite, but I’ve had some particularly good recommendations from the staff there lately. Dave Torrens & his team do so much to support local authors and the literary community here. Please support your local independent bookshop if you can. HOW TO OWN THE ROOM – I’m not sure why it has taken me so long to discover this podcast by the writer and broadcaster Viv Groskop on how to be a better public speaker. Viv speaks to prominent women, from Nigella to Margaret Atwood to Dame Julie Andrews, about confidence, nerves and performance, with actionable tips and tricks.

THE SECRET MELODIES OF TREES – A new album of harp music by the Belfast musician Ursula Burns, inspired by her love of nature. Ursula has been around the theatre, circus and comedy scene here for 30 years; this is a real departure for her and showcases her beautiful and unique playing style. 12

Chic C’est La Vie S

he came, she saw, she conquered Belfast! Reality royalty, Countess Luann de Lesseps, the original star of one of the most successful franchises in television history, The Real Housewives of New York City, landed in Belfast to a fanfare of delighted fans. The OG Housewife, ranked No.1 by TV Guide and topping all 46 Housewives across all franchised cities, has certainly made her mark. In 2017, she made her cabaret debut with ‘Countess and Friends’, selling out shows across the USA. Hundreds of fans, including some who travelled from Germany (because why not?), gathered at the iconic Ulster Hall for the cabaret star’s firstever visit to Northern Ireland as part of her UK and Ireland tour. Q Radio’s Jordan Humpries and Noel Bradley were spotted dancing the night away to hit songs including ‘Money Can’t Buy You Class’, ‘Chic C’est La Vie’, ‘Girl Code’, and ‘Feelin’ Jovani’. The Countess brought her unique blend of glamour and charisma to the stage, making everyone in the audience feel like they were living in a real-life soap opera – minus the dramatic table flips and surprise paternity tests. By the end of the night, Belfast was left starry-eyed and bedazzled. Chic, indeed!

My

Former Ulster rugby player and owner of local food company, Hellbent.

Louis Ludik 1. What do you love most about your job? With Hellbent, I love the challenge of building something from the ground up, especially breaking into big retailers. Rugby taught me discipline, teamwork, and resilience – now I get to apply those lessons to business. There’s something incredibly rewarding about seeing Hellbent grow and knowing we’re bringing people together over food.

Multi Award Winning company dedicated to producing the finest free range eggs in the industry

2. What has been your career highlight to date? Seeing our products on the shelf for the first time – that was a surreal moment. Winning a contract with major retailers has been incredible. 3. What are your favourite hobbies/activities outside of work? Spending time with my family, keeping fit, and, of course, having a good braai. I also love staying involved in rugby through coaching – it’s tough to completely step away from the game. 4. What is your daily routine? No two days are the same, but I usually start early. I try to fit in some exercise before heading into a day packed with meetings and problem-solving. Evenings are for family time and coaching. 5. Do you have a specific fitness regime? I stay active as much as possible – gym, running, and rugby coaching keep me moving. I don’t train at the intensity I did as a pro, but staying fit is still a big priority.

Multi award winning, including Great British Food Awards, Great Taste Awards, Irish Quality Food Award and Blas na hÉireann Awards. • Family run business • Farm to fork • All hens are free range • High welfare standards • British Lion accredited

6. Do you have any tips for staying positive? Knowing I’ve done my best and prepared as well as I could puts my mind at ease. I focus on controlling what I can and try not to stress about the rest. 7. What do you think is the best thing about Northern Ireland? The people. They’re incredibly friendly and made us feel so welcome. There’s a strong sense of community, and they’re passionate about their sport, which reminds me a lot of South Africa. And the scenery – you can’t beat a road trip along the coast. 8. What is your mantra or favourite quote that you live by? “Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.” You can’t always control natural ability, but you can control your effort and attitude. 9. Who has been your biggest influence? Definitely my wife, Chame. We’ve been together since I was 15 and she was 14, so she’s been by my side through my entire rugby career and now as we build a business together. We work well as a team and constantly learn from each other.

This month, in the slow run up to brighter evenings and summer holidays, I’m here to inspire you to get your creative juices flowing, with a few of my favourite activities that you won’t find on a normal Belfast city guide. Last year, I made it my mission to try one new thing a week, and these were my top three.

I’m sipping from my own hand-painted mug as I write this, one of my most prized possessions. If this mug broke, I’d be distraught, but slightly grateful for the excuse to make another. I spent a Saturday morning at Eden Pottery, enjoying coffee and catching up with a friend as we painted our mugs – mine fruit themed, hers floral. My daily coffee tastes all the better for being sipped from a handpainted piece.

One thing I always have in my house? Candles. So this SUSI workshop was the perfect activity for me. From picking my scents (sea salt and sage), to personalising the colour and naming the candle, you get to guide the whole process. My only issue was how quickly I used it up, but can you blame me, it smelt so good! SUSI The Gasworks, 14 Cromac Quay, Belfast

Eden Pottery 218 Abbey Road, Millisle, Newtownards

Who knew there were weekly still life classes in Belfast? Not me. When I stumbled across Figure This, it was an instant, albeit apprehensive, yes (I hadn’t drawn since my GCSEs!). In the two-hour class, we had to try drawing with the non-dominant hand, continuous lines, and different mediums. My main takeaway was how refreshing it felt to actually learn again. And not to blow my own trumpet... but I was actually really good. Trying something new can be daunting but truly there is nothing more freeing than being bad at something and trying anyway! Don’t worry about not being the best, just have fun. That’s all from me. Emily 40

When it comes to advice for those looking to venture into entrepreneurship, Elizabeth has an important message: be clear about your goals. 50

S

he believes that a staggering 92 percent of people never achieve their dreams simply because they get bogged down by the ‘how’. “Don’t obsess over the journey – that will take care of itself,” she says. “Visualise the life you want and make it part of your daily routine as if you’re already living it. If you can hold a thought in your mind, you can bring it into your reality.” A firm believer in the power of a positive mindset, Elizabeth avoids negativity and embraces practices like meditation and regular reading. For her, mental and emotional balance are key to maintaining success, both professionally and personally. DEFINING SUCCESS For Elizabeth, success is not measured by material wealth or possessions, but by a healthy work-life balance. A lover of travel, she prioritises moments of relaxation and adventure, believing that life is about enjoying the present rather than obsessing over the future. In a world where people often save for retirement without ever truly living, Elizabeth chooses to embrace the now, advocating for presence in every moment. WORDS FOR HER YOUNGER SELF Reflecting on her journey, Elizabeth would tell her younger self to embrace criticism as a tool for growth. “Don’t react to others. If someone isn’t kind, it’s a reflection of their own inner self,” she advises. “And if something triggers you, it’s often something within you that’s unresolved. Use it as an opportunity to grow.” HER GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT: RAISING CONFIDENT DAUGHTERS When asked about her greatest achievement, Elizabeth doesn’t hesitate. It’s raising her daughters to be confident, independent, and determined to pursue their dreams. She’s taught them that confidence isn’t about perfection but about owning who you are, flaws and all. By encouraging independence from a young age, allowing her daughters to make their own decisions, and providing a safe space for failure, she’s set them on a path of self-trust and empowerment. Elizabeth believes that mistakes are not something to fear but a natural part of the journey toward success. By helping her daughters understand the importance of their individuality and celebrating what makes them unique, she’s ensured they grow up with the strength to follow their own paths, unapologetically. ELIZABETH SANDS: A BEACON OF INSPIRATION IN THE BEAUTY INDUSTRY Elizabeth Sands stands as a pioneering force within the beauty industry, not just for her exceptional skills, but for her unwavering dedication to personal growth and her commitment to empowering others. With her motto, “By Building People, They Build Your Business,” Elizabeth has built a reputation as

a forward-thinking beauty entrepreneur who adapts to the ever-evolving landscape of the beauty world, all while maintaining the highest standards for her students. Her impact stretches far beyond the typical role of a beauty trainer. Elizabeth believes in nurturing talent and fostering growth, making sure that the individuals she trains not only meet but exceed the expectations they set for themselves. She’s a rare breed in the beauty industry, someone who combines technical excellence with a heart for uplifting others. A JOURNEY OF TRANSFORMATION Elizabeth’s own story is one of resilience. Over the past decade, she has overcome personal challenges and transformed adversity into opportunity. By drawing on her own experiences, she has partnered with numerous organisations to support those facing their own obstacles. Her ultimate goal? To help individuals, especially those with limitations, build their own thriving businesses within the beauty sector. SHE UNDERSTANDS THAT EACH PERSON POSSESSES unique talents and potential, and she is dedicated to creating a platform where her students can flourish. Elizabeth’s approach is rooted in the belief that everyone, regardless of their background, can achieve their dreams with the right support. Her work serves as an inspiration not just to women, but to men as well, proving that success in the beauty industry knows no bounds.

SUPPORTING DISADVANTAGED STUDENTS What truly sets Elizabeth apart is her commitment to supporting disadvantaged students. Through her innovative teaching methods and robust support system, she has collaborated with charities across the UK to provide equal opportunities for individuals to earn a living and acquire essential life skills. This unique approach has helped countless individuals, offering them the tools they need to build a brighter future in an industry that often feels out of reach. Elizabeth Sands is more than a beauty trainer; she’s a trailblazer and an advocate for those struggling with mental health issues, always promoting a lifelong pursuit of knowledge and self-improvement. A LEGACY OF EMPOWERMENT Elizabeth Sands is not just a beauty industry professional – she’s a champion of personal growth, a pioneer in training, and a beacon of hope for those looking to transform their lives. Whether through her work with disadvantaged students, her guidance for entrepreneurs, or her unwavering support for her family, Elizabeth proves that true success lies in helping others realise their full potential. And in doing so, she has become an inspiration to all who cross her path.

GIRL ABOUT TOWN From sampling the Merchant Hotel’s new cocktail menu to experiencing the “Du Cœur à la Main: Dolce&Gabbana” exhibition in Paris, it’s been an absolutely whirlwind of a month. Seriously, I feel like I’ve been on a non-stop carousel of glamour and cocktails! And now, as we teeter on the brink of spring, I can practically smell the fresh trends and excitement in the air. Who’s ready to embrace the new season with open arms, a fierce wardrobe, and a cocktail in hand? Bring it on!

EDITED BY NUALA MEENEHAN

Hey Big Spender!

Oh, where do I even begin? Everyone who knows me is acutely aware that I don’t need much persuading to spend time in the opulent embrace of the Merchant Hotel. So, when I received an invitation to celebrate the unveiling of their new cocktail menu, I practically sprinted there faster than you could mutter “shaken, not stirred”. If you haven’t visited recently, allow me to enlighten you. The award-winning Cocktail Bar has curated a dazzling new book featuring multiple highlights that will leave you giddy. But three specific cocktails have stolen the show, both with their mouth-watering flavours and their equally eye-watering price tags. These divine concoctions are built around three extraordinary and rare whiskeys: Midleton, Macallan, and Michter’s – each with only a few precious bottles left worldwide. This exclusive trio offers a once-in-a-lifetime experience for those connoisseurs of cocktail and whiskey. Prices start at a humble £785 and soar to an astonishing £1,000 for the Midleton Forêt de Tronçais. Yes, you heard that right, a “masterpiece of Irish whiskey” with tantalizing notes of honey, toasted almonds, and delicate spice. It even surpasses the hotel’s famed £750 Mai Tai, which proudly secured its spot in the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s most expensive cocktail back in 2007. But fear not, dear reader, if indulging in one or two Midleton Forêt de Tronçais leaves your wallet quaking. The Merchant’s exceptional team, led by The Merchant Bar’s general manager Aaron Dugan and cocktail bar manager Emily Doherty, have carefully curated a choice of 21 new cocktails. Each one is a masterpiece, priced from a more approachable £14.95. These new additions are named after their distinct flavour profiles, ensuring there’s something exquisite for every taste. Speaking of taste, I’d highly recommend the delicious Maestro Dobel Tequilabased Pepper cocktail. It’s a delightful concoction that promises to awaken your senses and leave you yearning for more. So, whether you’re looking to splurge on liquid gold or simply savour an expertly crafted cocktail, the Merchant Hotel has something extraordinary waiting for you. Cheers to that!

Tie One On It wasn’t that long ago that bows were everywhere. They adorned dresses, tied back hair, and even added a touch of whimsy to home décor. They were the epitome of the coquettish “girlhood” trend. But guess what? We’re finally ready to move on! Saint Laurent decreed it during the springsummer show, and with the endorsements from style icons Bieber and Hadid, the once-humble neck tie has ascended to fashion royalty as the IT buy of 2025! It’s time to embrace our inner fashion rebel and get knotted. Taking cues from the effortlessly chic Bella Hadid for Saint Laurent and the ultimate style queens Jenna Lyons and Diane Keaton, it’s clear – neckties are the new must-have. So, get out there, tie one on, and strut like you just walked off a runway.

Dolce & Gabbana Takes Over Paris Imagine the most opulent, dazzling spectacle of Italian couture right in the heart of Paris. Lucky for me, I got to experience it firsthand last month. “Du Cœur à la Main: Dolce&Gabbana,” which is currently running in Paris, is hands down one of the best exhibitions I’ve ever had the pleasure of witnessing. Curated by the multi-talented Florence Müller – a veritable genius in both the art and fashion worlds – this exhibition is an absolute feast for the senses. Visitors are invited to step into the world of Dolce & Gabbana, the renowned Italian fashion house founded by the iconic design duo, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana. Ten spell-binding rooms feature one-of-a-kind pieces from the Alta Moda, Alta Sartoria, and Alta Gioielleria collections, set against a backdrop of spectacular installations that plunge you into the heart of their universe. Feast on heavenly crystal-bedecked ball gowns, Baroqueinspired swirling prints, angelic winged dresses, and enormous cherub-adorned tulle skirts – every room, every gown, is an explosion of sensory delight that utterly captivates and inspires. If you’re visiting the French capital this month, trust me when I say this: Do not miss this exhibition. “Du Cœur à la Main: Dolce&Gabbana” runs at the Grand Palais, Paris until April 2nd. It’s an experience that will leave you enchanted and yearning for more.

F

ashionistas, hold onto your hats (or better yet, your blazers), because the spring-summer fashion scene just turned up a notch on the chic-o-meter. The Emily Ratajkowski x Marella capsule collection has waltzed into the gorgeous Arthur Street, Belfast store, and it’s serving up sophistication on a silver platter. This is not just a collection; it’s a fashion revolution, spearheaded by the effortlessly glamorous Emily Ratajkowski, whose talents extend far beyond the runway to the pages of the New York Times Best Seller list. Marella, the Italian fashion powerhouse, has teamed up with Ratajkowski to bring forth an exclusive collection that pays homage to the blazer – an item so iconic it deserves its own fan club. The launch was a veritable who’s-who of Belfast’s fashion elite, with store owner Jo Morrison and Cathy Martin leading the charge. The stars of the evening included the fabulous Rebecca Maguire and Melissa Riddell, and of course, the CMPR models Maria and Anaai, who brought the collection to life with poise and panache.

Cathy Martin.

This collection is a masterclass in versatility. From oversized blazers that give the office look a rebellious twist to doublebreasted wonders that moonlight as mini dresses, every piece is a statement. Minimalist designs with cut-out effects? Yes, please! Transitioning from day to night has never looked so seamless. The colour palette is as varied as your mood board – think classic black, blue, and white, interspersed with natural tones and punctuated by a punchy red that’s as vibrant as a summer sunset. And the textures? Divine. We’re talking lightweight linen mixes, structured denim, and buttery-soft real leather nappa. Guests indulged in edible strawberry roses courtesy of Holywood Wine Bar and refreshing sorbets from Signature Scoop, all while grooving to the laidback beats of DJEmmaB. The finishing touch? Flawless makeup from Belfast Darlings at Charlotte Tilbury, adding an extra sprinkle of magic to an already enchanting evening. If you’re a fashion lover, the Emily Ratajkowski x Marella capsule collection at Marella, Arthur Street, Belfast, is your next must-visit destination. Prepare to be dazzled.

UT PARTNERSHIP

Embrace the Healing Power of Snail Mucin for Healthy Skin Snail farm owner, Kieran Corley, based in the Bragan Mountains of County Monaghan, tells us how he developed a healing range of skincare products to help users ditch dermatitis and purge psoriasis. properties. Without getting too technical, these ingredients hydrate, exfoliate, heal, firm and protect skin, making it an exceptional ingredient for skincare products. The FAQs section on our website has some useful info - https://braganskincare.com/faqs/ So you can use the product regularly as part of your skin routine? Yes, some creams in our range are used daily, such as cleansers, toners, moisturisers, as well as anti-ageing creams.

Snail farm owner, Kieran Corley. Where did the idea to farm snails come from? On the journey home from work one day, I heard a story about snail farming on the radio, which captured my attention. I learned that Ireland’s damp climate was perfect for snails. Over lockdown I did some research and decided to give it a go, the plan initially being to produce edible snails, known as escargot, for export. How did you go from farming snails for food to making skincare products? I had a number of scars on my arms from a car accident many years ago and noticed they’d become less red and inflamed – in fact, they’re barely noticeable now. The only thing I’d been doing differently was handling the snails. So, I began learning more about snail mucin to join the dots and discovered that using snail slime to heal skin conditions was not new. In fact, the practice dates back 2500 years to Hippocrates – the father of modern medicine and author of the Hippocratic Oath that doctors still take today. Following a two-year search to secure a suitable manufacturing partner, we were eventually able to launch our first product in the summer of 2022. Which skin conditions does snail mucin treat and what makes it so effective? Snail mucin treats many skin conditions including eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis, irritated scalp, nappy rash, stretch marks, scars, and daily issues like dry hands. Such conditions are often treated with steroid creams which do long-term damage to the skin if use is prolonged, therefore snail mucin is seen as a more natural and safer alternative. It’s also used heavily in the cosmetic skincare market due to its ability to hydrate and rejuvenate skin and reduce signs of ageing, so it can also form part of your daily skincare routine. What makes snail mucin so effective for our skin is its unique composition of hyaluronic acid, glycolic acid, allantoin, proteins, peptides, antioxidants, and antimicrobial

What is your most popular product? Our most popular product is our Atopic cream as it’s used to treat a multitude of conditions from minor skin imperfections to more troublesome cases of dermatitis, eczema, and psoriasis which can have a major impact on the sufferer’s self-confidence. We’ve had hundreds of positive testimonials about its effectiveness, and lots of returning customers. Many people may be squeamish about using slug slime. How do you convince them otherwise? Our testimonials speak for themselves. We have had such positive feedback from many who have tried the products. The benefits of snail mucin have also been researched and documented in reputable publications including The Journal of Integrative Dermatology. Reviews can be found at: https:// braganskincare.com/snail-cream-reviews/ Do you plan to develop any new products in the future? Yes, due to customer demand we are launching two new products over the coming months – a fragrance-free conditioner and shower gel. *Anyone with a snail allergy or a seashell allergy should not use snail mucin products. Where can we find out more? There is a wealth of information on our website: www.braganskincare.com and in particular on our blog. Email us on braganskincare@gmail.com with any questions, or join us on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn or YouTube. We’ll also be exhibiting at the upcoming Balmoral Show in May if you prefer to chat face-to-face. Readers can also bag themselves a bargain by visiting our website and using the discount code UT10 to get 10% off their first purchase.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO BARBERING, WAS IT ALWAYS A CAREER YOU WANTED TO PURSUE? The idea started when I was a teenager after I’d been given a few bad haircuts. I then decided to start practicing cutting my own hair, which at the time I felt I wasn’t too bad at. It all came down to bad communication with the barbers and asking for a little off the top turned into a ‘one cut fits all’ service, or as most people would refer back to “a typical short back and sides”. I remember going home and fixing some of these haircuts that the barber somehow could not competently achieve, I then realised maybe I was onto something. WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION TO OPEN YOUR OWN BUSINESS – THE MANE CREW? At one point I went from job to job, I tried everything and always wanted to work from when I left secondary school. Somehow, I knew one day I would become my own boss, at that time I wasn’t sure how, but I guess someway or another I was destined to make it happen. I always believed I was going to be capable of running my own business. Previously I worked and managed a barbershop for one of Northern Ireland’s leading brands where I trained and mentored staff members for five years, while creating the most profitable branch of its chain. In the background I was lecturing barbering part-time in Belfast where I was able to scout, and create opportunities, for the next generation of barber stylists. At one point after finishing my level two barbering I felt I was ready to go into the big world of work, but then shortly after, I was being laid off from my first ever barbering job. At the time I then questioned myself, wondering, maybe this wasn’t for me. My friends were going to Australia around the same time, I had to decide whether to stay and complete my level three barbering or go and explore more of the world. I put my career first and went back to college with a humbled, but ready attitude. I then went onto winning my first barbering award and took second place in the United Kingdom at the British Barbers Association, National Student Barber in 2019. At that point I knew I’d made the right decision to stay. From then onwards I went on to win Salon Awards ‘Barber of the Year’ for Northern Ireland in 2020. After that it was success after success!

and structure, creating a strong masculine look. We focus on creating a style to suit your lifestyle in our one-to-one consultation prior to your haircut. Other than the obvious, we also offer grooming services and packages that are popular too, including: hair wash, nose wax and a facial spa. The Mane Package, for example, would be one of our best sellers, this includes an all-in-one experience from the neck up, making you feel recharged, younger and super relaxed. This includes a haircut, beard trim, nose wax, hair wash, facial spa with steamer and eucalyptus oils that will open up your pours and airways, which is followed with a facial cleanse, exfoliation, face mask and moisturise. We also apply a nice scented beard oil and aftershave to finish the service. You are guaranteed to feel brand new, once we finish and you hit the fresh air. WHAT HAVE BEEN THE HIGHLIGHTS SO FAR IN SETTING UP YOUR BUSINESS? Myself and my team member Niall had 400 bookings in our first three weeks of opening in December 2024. We couldn’t believe the support from the surrounding and local community in the Rosetta area of Belfast. We received our first 100 5-star reviews on Booksy, our booking app in the first six weeks, which most businesses take years to achieve. A lot of our reviews complimented our services, friendly atmosphere and the barbershop’s classy decor and modern look. Come on in and see for yourself! Grab a complimentary beer, barista-style coffee or tea, it’s all on us!

WOULD YOU AGREE THAT COMING TO A BARBER SHOP IS MORE THAN JUST GETTING A HAIRCUT, IT IS A FULL EXPERIENCE? I wanted to create a high-end barbershop experience for everyone, where people feel valued, while receiving a top tier service from an experienced, award-winning barber’s perspective and outlook. It’s not just a haircut, it’s most definitely an experience as a whole at The Mane Crew. WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE MANE CREW OVER THE NEXT FEW YEARS? After a tremendous start, The Mane Crew plans on expanding, offering jobs and opportunities with an incredible seven-chair barbershop. The next plan is for their very own barbering academy that will offer a range of courses for beginners to advanced barber stylists. WHAT INSPIRED YOUR NAME/BRANDING? It took a long time to figure out the right branding. I had so many ideas, but nothing was clicking, until one day, it all came together. I wanted it to be simple, but eyecatching. The branding has a number of meanings, for example, the team as The Mane Crew, a lion’s mane representing male hair, Crew as in a crew cut, which dates back to the 1940s, adopted as a style by boat crews and still a popular haircut today. When you visit you will see small details representing the character and meaning behind it all.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB? The thing I love most about being a barbershop owner is being able to bring style, character and a personal touch to the barbershop décor, where you will feel welcomed into a bright, open, warm and airy space. Also, being a barber stylist, I have always enjoyed meeting new people and expanding a strong client base that has been growing year-on-year.

WHAT SERVICES DO YOU OFFER AND WHAT SETS YOU APART FROM THE REST? We offer a range of services for the modern man! Everything from tailored haircuts to styled beards, there is no one-haircut-fits-all attitude at The Mane Crew, everything is designed to enhance your own facial features

Ireland’s Most Affordable IVF

Thérapie Fertility, Ireland’s most affordable IVF clinic, is thrilled to open the 4th satellite clinic, located in the heart of Belfast, Northern Ireland. Thérapie Fertility first opened in Dublin in 2021, with a simple mission: making fertility treatment in Ireland more accessible and affordable for those who need it. Thérapie Fertilitys’ Mission Since opening, the clinic has seen thousands of patients and have built their team to over 50 full-time staff led by one of the country’s leading fertility experts, Dr. John Kennedy. They have been proud to remain waiting-list free and their four satellite services across the Island of Ireland have made it even easier for those travelling from all over Ireland and the UK. Their medical director, Dr. John Kennedy, spoke about the new clinic in Belfast and said: “It has been an amazing couple of years. The team at Thérapie Fertility are

exceptional and we are thrilled to welcome Emily to the team, to head up our Belfast satellite clinic. Fertility treatment can be an exhausting experience and it’s important to us to make the journey a little bit easier for our patients. Fertility Treatment In Ireland... Where to Begin? Finding Your Tribe Going through fertility treatment is hard, regardless of your reasons for doing so. Linking in with others who have been through the same process is a really useful thing to do. It is invaluable to speak to someone who understands what you are going through and who may be able to offer bits of advice from their own experience. At Thérapie Fertility, we understand how confusing it can all be, and so our team of friendly and dedicated experts are here to help you along the way.

Why choose fertility treatment? There are many different reasons why a couple or a single person may need to access fertility treatment. Maybe you are a heterosexual couple who for a variety of reasons need assistance to conceive. Or perhaps you are an LGBTQ+ couple who needs to access donor assisted conception. You may also be a single person who wishes to conceive with donor assistance. IVF/ICSI IVF or In Vitro Fertilisation is a method of conception where eggs are retrieved and then fertilised with sperm outside of the body. It quite literally means ‘fertilisation in glass’. IVF is specifically recommended for those with absent, blocked or damaged fallopian tubes. It is often used in cases of unexplained infertility and secondary infertility. Where there is male factor subfertility it can be used in combination with ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection). It is also an option for those wishing to become pregnant with the assistance of donor sperm in order to do Reciprocal IVF. Once embryos are formed, then you have two options. You can have an embryo transfer where an embryo is placed back into the body through a guided catheter directly into the womb. If you do not wish to do the embryo transfer immediately, or indeed if you have surplus embryos, you can freeze them for future use. IUI IUI or Intrauterine Insemination is a method of conception where sperm is injected directly into the uterus around the time of ovulation. You will take medication to increase your chances of getting pregnant. IUI can be successful, but the success rates are not as high as IVF. The main benefits of IUI, are that it’s less invasive and the cost is significantly lower than IVF. Donor Assisted Conception Many people going through fertility treatment require a sperm donor in order to conceive through an IUI or IVF cycle. This could be down to fertility issues or simply because they are an LGBTQ+ couple or a single person who does not have the capacity to become pregnant without assistance. Thérapie Fertility partner with European Sperm Bank to provide a sperm donation service to our patients. What does it cost? The cost of treatment is an investment, and you will need to consider all your options as the costing can vary dramatically from treatment to treatment… and even from clinic to clinic. Make sure that you have a clear understanding of what your clinic is charging. There will often be ‘hidden extras’ which can be a nasty surprise when you are already halfway through the process.

WORLD CLASS EYE

Celebrating its 17th anniversary, Cathedral Eye Clinic in Belfast has earned a reputation as a leader in cutting-edge ophthalmic care. With nearly two decades of experience, the clinic continues to lead the way in laser vision correction, providing patients with the latest advancements in eye surgery, including the revolutionary SMILE Pro laser procedure. Founded by Professor Johnny Moore, Cathedral Eye Clinic was established with the goal of providing world-class care right at home. Under his leadership, the clinic has introduced advanced laser technology to Northern Ireland, the SMILE Pro laser treatment, the gold standard in laser eye surgery. SMILE Pro offers enhanced comfort, quicker recovery times, and reduced complication risks compared to traditional methods.

CELEB 17 YERATING ARS

Unlike LASIK, which involves creating a flap in the cornea, the SMILE procedure uses a small incision to remove a thin layer of tissue, reshaping the cornea to improve vision. This minimally invasive technique minimizes disruption to the corneal tissue, reduces the risk of chronic dry eyes, and allows for a faster recovery. The SMILE Pro laser provides unmatched precision, often resulting in better outcomes than other laser treatments. Performed under local anesthesia, the procedure is virtually pain-free, and patients typically return to daily activities in just a few days. Recently, our team were proud to receive special recognition by Zeiss for their significant contribution to advancing SMILE laser eye surgery in Ireland, with Zeiss celebrating the milestone of over 10 million eyes treated. In addition to laser eye surgery, Cathedral Eye Clinic offers a full spectrum of ophthalmic services. As well as refractive errors, we treat common conditions like cataracts, glaucoma, dry eyes, as well as more complex issues. With a diverse team of surgeons who specialise in different areas of ophthalmology, we provide expert care across a wide range of conditions. This specialisation allows us to deliver the highest standard of care for every patient, regardless of the complexity of their condition.

Mr Mandal, Professor Moore and Mr Stewart.

Our commitment to patient care extends beyond treatment. At Cathedral Eye Clinic, we prioritise educating our patients by clearly explaining their options and guiding them throughout their entire treatment journey. Whether you’re a young professional seeking vision correction, an athlete interested in faster recovery through SMILE laser surgery, or an older patient managing conditions like glaucoma or age-related macular degeneration, we ensure you feel wellinformed and supported every step of the way.

Patient care is at the core of everything we do. From the initial consultation, where patients meet with their surgeon to discuss their needs, to post-operative care, we ensure our patients receive the guidance and support required for optimal recovery and results. We believe healthcare is about more than just treating a condition—it’s about building trust, providing reassurance, and ensuring every patient feels valued. This is especially important in ophthalmology, where the prospect of eye surgery can be daunting for many. When you choose Cathedral Eye Clinic, you’re selecting a locally owned clinic with strong community ties and a dedication to providing the best possible eye care. With the introduction of SMILE Pro laser surgery, we offer precision treatment, safety, and comfort, helping you achieve clear, healthy vision. If you’re considering laser eye surgery, don’t settle for anything less than the best. Contact Cathedral Eye Clinic today to learn more about SMILE Pro laser eye surgery and take the first step toward a brighter, clearer future.

EXPERT LOWER LIMB CARE FOR EVERYONE Ulster Tatler speaks to Amy Hendron, lead sports podiatrist and clinical director at Performance Podiatry NI.

You have recently launched Performance Podiatry NI what led you to take this step in setting up your own business? I have always had a deep passion for nurturing our mind, body, and soul. This inspired me to launch Performance Podiatry NI, a venture aimed at bridging the gap in our community for specialised sports podiatry services. Here, we bring together medical knowledge and a commitment to improving athletic performance. As a PE specialist, I observed many young athletes struggling with lower limb injuries. I wanted to create a dedicated space where I could support them in improving their performance and overall well-being. Establishing PPNI felt like the perfect opportunity to merge my love for helping others reach their peak potential with my knowledge in podiatric medicine. Additionally, I am committed to injury prevention, allowing me the privilege to positively impact the lives of individuals of all ages and foster a pain-free, active community. How did you get into podiatry and what do you love most about your job? I got into podiatry because I’ve always had a love for working with people and a fascination with how the body works. A family friend ran a podiatry clinic, and after getting some hands-on experience there, I was drawn in by the strong personal connections that podiatrists build with their patients. I’ve seen how lower limb injuries can significantly affect people, especially those who are active, and it’s inspiring to witness patients come in with pain and leave feeling pain-free. It made me realise just how impactful this profession can be. I wanted to blend my background in physical education with podiatry, focusing on sports and musculoskeletal health. While working as a specialist in wound care, the pandemic gave me the chance to step back and complete my master’s in sports and exercise medicine, which only deepened my passion for the field. Being a sports podiatrist is a true privilege.

I feel honoured to help individuals in pain return to a pain-free state. I’ve seen how podiatry can truly change lives, whether it’s treating injuries, preventing them, or improving mobility. The ability to assist people in getting back on their feet brings me immense satisfaction, and the variety of work – from helping athletes achieve peak performance to improving the mobility of others – makes every day unique and rewarding. You are located in Holywood, what are the benefits of being based there? Being based in Holywood brings numerous advantages that enrich both my professional and personal life. This beautiful coastal area has a closeknit, welcoming community that truly makes it feel like home. My family’s strong connection to the area adds a personal touch to my work, making it even more meaningful. As a PE specialist in a local school, I have the opportunity to engage with the community and play a role in developing young athletes. I work from a studio on the top floor of a fantastic physio clinic that aligns with my ethos of putting people first and addressing the root of their issues. The proximity to Belfast is another great benefit, providing convenience for both work and leisure activities. Additionally, with many sports and athletic clubs nearby, I can easily stay connected with the sports community I’m involved in and travel to various events. Overall, Holywood significantly enhances my experience as a sports podiatrist. What services and treatments do you offer? At Performance Podiatry NI, we offer a variety of specialised services and treatments focused on lower limb health. One of our main offerings is the lower limb injury clinic, where we assess your condition to pinpoint the root cause of your discomfort. During this appointment, we carefully conduct a biomechanical gait analysis, which helps us explore multiple treatment options tailored to your needs. These options can include a strength and conditioning plan, shockwave therapy, gait retraining, or custom orthotics designed to enhance the biomechanics of your lower limb. We commonly see patients dealing with issues like heel pain, shin splints, ankle instability, Achilles tendonitis, and even knee, hip, and lower back pain. Some appointments also involve advanced techniques like 3D scanning and in-depth running analysis. As a runner, I’m passionate about this cutting-edge technology because it allows us to

analyse each joint closely, measuring joint angles and alignment. This detailed information helps us identify weaknesses in form and creates specific strength and conditioning plans that target areas for improvement in your gait. On top of that, we have a minor surgical procedure clinic for patients dealing with nail damage from trauma or infection, or those who are awaiting a surgical appointment. We perform these procedures under local anaesthetic, prioritising comfort and care throughout the process. Having been a patient myself, I truly understand the importance of a compassionate approach, and I aim to provide that for everyone who comes to us. What sets Performance Podiatry apart? What really sets Performance Podiatry apart is that we completely redefine what podiatry can be. Instead of the usual associations like corns, calluses, and rushed visits, we offer a unique experience where each appointment lasts around an hour. This gives you the time to be truly heard, helped, and healed. With nearly a decade of experience working with everyone from amateur to elite athletes, I also bring my background as an educator and an MSc in Sports and Exercise Medicine. This combination opens even more opportunities for learning and enhancing the care we provide. We take pride in being highly educated, experienced, and empathetic, all focused on improving your quality of life. Whether you’re an avid walker or training for the Olympics, you’ll always find a warm welcome at our door. What are your plans for the next few years ahead? For the years ahead, my vision for the future is centred around recognising and addressing the specific needs of every individual. One of my key initiatives will be to link with schools for early detection of lower limb conditions. This partnership will not only help in identifying issues at an early stage but also raise awareness about the importance of foot health among young athletes. Additionally, I’m excited to share that I have some innovative plans in store that will enhance our services and strengthen our community ties. These initiatives will focus on promoting self-acceptance and individuality. By creating a nurturing environment, we can empower our team and the individuals we serve to thrive. So, stay tuned for what’s coming next!

EDITED BY REBECCA NELSON

Rebecca is founder and Director of Physiotherapy at Apex Clinic and Apex Headache Clinic.

Are Headaches or Migraines Destroying Your Life? Apex Headache Clinic, Belfast, is Ireland’s first drug-free headache and migraine clinic, and has been clearing headaches and migraines for over 25 years. An experienced team of specialist physiotherapists is led by clinic founder and Spinal & Headache Physiotherapy Specialist, Rebecca Nelson. Her unique approach of treating and clearing headaches/migraines, called The Nelson Headache Approach™, is offered in no other clinic and its high success rate explains why people travel from all over the UK and Ireland for this treatment. This month, Rebecca explains why getting to the source of the problem, rather than taking painkillers, is always the best solution to curing headaches and migraines.

or migraines, as can repeated lifting or a previous neck injury. Headaches and migraines can stem from your neck While spending the early part of my career in New Zealand, over 30 years ago, I sought treatment for my own migraines, which were diagnosed as stemming from my neck. I had no idea that my neck was involved, and this treatment was life changing for me. I’ve had no headache or migraine ever since. When I returned to Northern Ireland, I later launched Apex Headache Clinic with the sole aim of providing a cure to other migraine and headache sufferers like myself. Headaches ruin lives At Apex Headache Clinic we see patients daily whose lives have been destroyed by headaches or migraines, leaving them desperate to find a cure for their pain. In the UK alone, a staggering 10 million people suffer from daily or frequent headaches. Many people blame tension or stress for their headaches and so they reach for painkillers which offer them no long-lasting relief. What many people are unaware of, is that there is often a physical cause for their headaches stemming from their upper neck, even when the person may experience no neck pain at all. Poor posture or hours spent slumped over desks and computers commonly cause persistent neck-triggered headaches

The Nelson Headache Approach™ Inspired by my experience of treating headaches in New Zealand and later the UK, I designed my own regime for treating headaches and migraines, called The Nelson Headache Approach™. My specialist regime of manual physiotherapy treatment for headaches and migraines has been successfully used in patients of all ages, from children to elderly folk. All our highly specialist physiotherapists have been extensively trained in this approach by myself and we have a very high success rate in curing persistent, longstanding headaches and migraines. The Nelson Headache Approach™ is a unique treatment regime, which is not offered in any other clinic in the UK or Ireland.

I don’t have to worry about going to bed with a migraine knowing I would wake up with a migraine. I am back exercising and I don’t have problems at work anymore. Having a headache or migraine used to be my number one worry but now it is the least of my worries. I only have to attend the clinic once every four weeks now for maintenance treatment with my specialist physiotherapist.” Treat pain at its source If you suffer from persistent headaches or migraines it is important to get to the source of the problem. Crowning Glory: Why Local Hair Loss Treatment is the Smartest Choice When it comes to hair restoration it’s not just men who are reaching out to clinics, here and abroad, for help, but more women are opting for treatments. A growing, yet often overlooked issue, female hair loss, impacts eight million women in the UK, with causes ranging from androgenic alopecia (affecting 40% of women over 50) to stress, trauma, and hormonal changes. With an increasing number of clinics abroad offering lower-cost solutions, it’s often tempting to consider travelling for such treatments but Lisburn Road-based Paradigm Clinic, a specialist in hair restoration led by Belfast-based Consultant Plastic Surgeon, Brendan Fogarty FRCS (Plast), says, “It’s essential to consider the risks and why going local is often the safest, most reliable option.” Paradigm Clinic is the only Belfast based Consultant Plastic Surgeon, Brendan Fogarty FRCS (Plast) and Joanne Scannell, clinic in the UK that offers Nursing Lead at Lisburn Road-based Paradigm Clinic, a specialist in hair restoration. a tailored, female-friendly approach to hair transplants, using its unique Growth “At Paradigm, we prioritise continuity of care. We don’t just perform Optimised Follicular Unit Extraction (GOFUE) technique, which has the surgery, we establish a relationship with our patients. That’s critical been responsible for fantastic results amongst its client base including for ensuring the best possible long term outcome.” men and women. Choosing a clinic you can trust is crucial. Brendan advises While one cannot treat alopecia, the clinic specialises in female hair potential patients to “take your time and choose a surgeon based transplants for those suffering hair loss from other conditions. “A good on experience, not cost. Meet the surgeon in person, ask about their transplant frees women from constantly thinking about their hair. It’s qualifications and ensure you feel comfortable with their approach and the same for men, but unlike men, women can’t just shave their heads their results.” and move on,” Brendan begins. “We believe hair restoration is about improving quality of life,” says As part of the process, Brendan explains that the transplant is Brendan. “At Paradigm, we don’t just change your hair — we change carefully planned around each woman’s hairstyle. “We discuss their how you feel about yourself.” styling preferences and tailor the transplant to address them,” he says. “If they’d like, I can also liaise with their hairdresser to ensure the best possible outcome.” Natural looking results, without having to shave the head for the procedure, is very attractive to Paradigm patients. “We don’t require women (or men) to shave their heads for a transplant, which is a major advantage over other clinics. Our technique ensures natural-looking results, while preserving the option to style your hair as you wish.” Travelling abroad for treatment is understandably tempting, albeit this is a route more popular with men than women. “Surgical tourism may offer cheap treatments, but patients need to be aware of the hidden costs. Inexperienced doctors, unregulated facilities and no follow-up can result in permanent problems such as failure of hair-growth, unnatural hairlines, and permanent scarring,” Brendan advises. “In the majority of poor outcome transplant cases who are referred to me, I encounter patients with irreparable results while the ‘lucky’ patient needs to spend even more to correct issues as they are now on the back foot with limited donor hair remaining.” Brendan adds: “Hair transplants should be viewed as an investment in both appearance and self-esteem. When done correctly, the results can last a lifetime and are definitely in my highest patient satisfaction group of all the plastic surgery procedures I perform. When patients have a bad transplant elsewhere, they will regret it every time they look in the mirror.” One of the key risks of traveling abroad for a procedure is the lack of www.paradigmclinic.co.uk follow-up care. FAQS

All consultations are directly with your surgeon. Depending on the nature of the procedure your operation will be carried out in the Fitzwilliam Clinic under local anaesthetic and/or sedation or under general anaesthesia. Cosmetic surgery at the clinic mirrors that carried out in the United States and Europe with emphasis on day care surgery under sedation thus allowing you to return home shortly after surgery is completed. The clinic operates an oncall facility ensuring access to 24 hour clinical care. Procedures

We understand what motivates a person to consider surgery. Whether it’s to correct or improve a physical imperfection from birth or the rigours of life and sun exposure leading to laxity of skin or the outcome of successful weight loss, these are all valid reasons to consider a procedure which will correct the area of concern and

What should people take into consideration when it comes to cosmetic surgery? It is a serious surgical procedure but makes a huge difference to wellbeing, self-esteem and confidence, allowing people to live their lives happier and more content. What care can patients expect from Fitzwilliam Clinic? All consultations are carried out with the plastic surgeon who will carry out the procedure, never a nurse. This allows time to consider what the patient desires, what to expect and how to help your own recovery. We encourage questions and well considered decisions. Patients receive care, understanding and relevant information to the highest level, providing the ultimate reassurance and peace of mind along with easy accessibility to the clinical staff for guidance and support throughout. Do you need referral from a GP to get a procedure? No, no referral required. How can someone make an appointment to get the process started? By telephoning our staff on 02890323888 or completing the easy enquiry form on our website (www.fitzwilliamclinic.com). All contact has confidentiality guaranteed. How long does it take from first appointment to the surgery taking place? We want patients to consider what is best for them and ensure they have time to do this. We never pressurise. Understanding the patients needs and timeframe guides the timeframe. Our consultants are in high demand which is also a factor. Securing a consultation with the plastic surgeon in good time will alleviate any opportunity for disappointment.

INTERVIEW

Jane Hardy is a feature writer who has interviewed a few of the big names from Arlene Foster to Mrs Thatcher.

BY JANE HARDY

A WRITER’S LIFE Acclaimed author Jan Carson may play around with ideas but for her latest project, an adaptation of The Velveteen Rabbit on at the Lyric Theatre, she’s entered the playroom, she tells Jane Hardy.

A

uthor Jan Carson has moved to toyland for her latest venture. To be more specific, Carson has entered the nursery home of The Velveteen Rabbit and adapted Margery Williams’ classic tale for a lavish coproduction with Replay at The Lyric Theatre. It deals with the plight of a much-loved, worn toy who becomes real, and hops away, thanks to being loved. Jan Carson says now down the line: “It’s about what it means to be real. It’s accessible for children, but I hope there’s enough in it for adults that parents who come won’t tear their hair out.” As a child, Jan had an equivalent toy. “Mine was a panda, imaginatively called Panda, that was given to my mother as a newborn. By the time I got it, it was full of straw.” And worn with affectionate handling, like the velveteen rabbit who becomes real after “being REALLY loved for a long, long time”. Carson says that Williams’ book, written in 1922 and never out of print since, wasn’t part of her growing-up library. “I’d never read it but when I did, found it was full of good stuff. But it was dated, is quite a moralistic tale and now children have books that encourage them to ask questions. So we had to cut a lot of stuff.” Pressed for an example, she chooses possibly the scariest scene. “Well, we cut the bit where the toys are burned on a bonfire as we felt that wouldn’t go down well with modern children.” The story has also gained a musical score and songs by Duke Special, aka Peter Wilson. He and Jan Carson have long been friends so it

101

was an enjoyable collaboration. “We’ve been friends for years and always wanted to collaborate. The songs are brilliant, earworms, and we’ve been humming them all the time.” She singles out one in particular, Nobody gets to be real, for particular praise. “It’s a leitmotif through the show.” The Velveteen Rabbit is now set in the 1980s – “in near contemporary Northern Ireland, so parents can recognise their childhood.” What binds Carson and Duke Special, she adds, is that both plough a less than obvious creative furrow. “I’m a magical realist and he doesn’t write linear songs, I don’t think.” She says that some of Duke Special’s music is reminiscent of the TV show signature tunes from back in the day, “like Bagpuss and the Magic Roundabout”. She says that adapting her first ever work wasn’t more challenging than dreaming up fiction from scratch as it reminded her of adapting her short stories for the radio. “It’s about compression, cutting things, getting the essence... It’s similar to when I adapt my stories as radio plays.” A noted novelist and short story writer, whose collection of stories Children’s Children has just been republished, she says that she relishes both forms. “Short stories are, after all, where you can plant your maddest ideas in 4000 words. But I love the grace of the novel form, which is more forgiving.” Like most writers, Carson is an enthusiastic bookworm.

INTERVIEW

Duke Special (composer of The Velveteen Rabbit), Jan Carson, Janice Kernoghan-Reid (director of The Velveteen Rabbit, a Lyric Theatre and Replay Theatre Company Co-Production). She reads a lot and her blog details her reading projects undertaken year by year. This year is going to be a return to favourites. Perhaps surprisingly for a magic realist, realist fiction features largely. She likes the twentieth century English novelist, Barbara Pym, for example. “I love Muriel Spark, Barbara Comyns, Barbara Pym. After all, to be a magic realist, you have to be good at realism.” When we speak, Carson is editing her new novel, Few and Far Between, for her publishers, TransWorld. It deals with an imagined event that was once proposed, filling in Lough Neagh to make a seventh county. She says: “There’s real history and imagined history and it is told by an anthropologist investigating this community living in the archipelago. They are gays, mixed marriage couples, people who wouldn’t have felt comfortable in Northern Ireland during the Troubles era.” For research, Carson was lucky enough to make trips to this attractive area. “I was brought up near Lough Neagh and one time we drove right round. Although there’s a lot going on now with the ecology, algae and so on, it is beautiful.” Jan Carson describes herself as a “laptop writer” and produces her compelling work seated in cafés. “Not the nice, independent cafés but cheap chains. I find supermarket and mall cafés very good for people watching and nobody bothers you.” We discuss the need for more arts funding and why it’s shortsighted to deprive the coming generation of exposure to culture. But what can art really do for the human race in very tough times like the present? I’ve written essays on this. I think it teaches you things are not black-white, more but more nuanced.” This is important in an age which sometimes seems to resemble the dark ages, with artists ignored or banned. “When I was teaching at a community college in Florida, I was asked six times by students whether I’d been banned. I know my next novel probably will be as it contains a trans character and people I know who have featured trans people in their work have been banned by American libraries.” There is no typical day in this writer’s life. She spends two to three hours a morning writing, does administration and promotion work in the afternoons. But Carson finds the travel –

she visited twenty countries last year and is scheduled to go to Brussels and Brazil before Easter – does not suit her ambition. “It’s about being a writer rather than writing.” And writing is what she does, having produced ten novels in the past ten years, an impressive and prolific record. So Jan Carson has pencilled in 2025 as a more reflective year, still writing, and she’s producing short stories while editing, but with more time and less deadlines. She is looking forward to the opening of The Velveteen Rabbit and says she hopes “it starts a conversation about what it means to be real, and about creativity”. The Velveteen Rabbit runs at The Lyric Theatre from March 14-30 as part of Belfast Children’s Festival. Children’s Children, Jan Carson’s short story collection, is published by Transworld.

Short stories are, after all, where you can plant your maddest ideas in 4000 words. But I love the grace of the novel form, which is more forgiving.

ARTS DIARY

“The book is about love and family and forgiveness; it is sad and funny and utterly original.” EDITED BY KELLIE BURCH KELLIE@ULSTERTATLER.COM

Garrett Carr book launch The new landmark Seamus Heaney Centre building at Queen’s University Belfast opened last year. I have been looking for a reason to visit, and was delighted when I had the opportunity to attend the launch of the debut novel by Garrett Carr there. The event had a fabulous turnout of supporters of Garrett Carr, who teaches creative writing at the Seamus Heaney Centre, in attendance. Set in 1973, The Boy from the Sea follows a close-knit community on Ireland’s west coast, when a baby is found abandoned on the beach. Named Brendan by Ambrose Bonnar, the fisherman who adopts him, the baby captivates the town and the boy he grows to be will captivate them still – no one can quite fathom Brendan Bonnar. Told over two decades, Garrett Carr’s The Boy from the Sea is a novel about a restless boy trying to find his place in the world and a family fighting to hold itself together. It is a story of ordinary lives made extraordinary, a drama about a community who can’t help but look to the boy from the sea for answers as they face the storm of a rapidly changing world. Guests were welcomed by Seamus Heaney Centre director Glenn Patterson, before Garrett was introduced on the evening by Louise Kennedy. Not only is Louise the author of the remarkable Trespasses, she is also a graduate of the Seamus Heaney Centre of Creative Writing, where Garrett was one of her teachers. She said: “Garrett turned out to be a great support and friend. The Boy from the Sea is a really remarkable book in so many ways. It captures a time and place like nothing you have ever read. Above all, the book is about love and family and forgiveness; it is sad and funny and utterly original.” The gathered audience, including author Wendy Erskine; journalist, author and broadcaster, Malachi O’Doherty; author Paul Maddern; and poet Maureen Boyle, were given a real flavour of The Boy From the Sea when Garrett read an excerpt from the wonderful book. Atmospheric and powerful, this is a stunning debut that showcases what a talent Garrett is. The launch of The Boy From the Sea took place on 6 February.

Launch of Afterwards The NI Science Festival was back with a bang, bringing NI to life throughout the month of February. The unique and creative festival offered a stimulating and wide range of events, such as Afterwards, an installation of original work by Tracy McCoey, a recent Masters Degree graduate from the School of Art at Ulster University. The exhibition, which was launched at ArtisAnn Gallery, features a mini Victorian museum housing faux artefacts from an ambiguous time after a catastrophic climate event. The artefacts refer to the ecological imbalance caused by human activity. Growing up on Long Island, USA, the artist has memories of abundant numbers of crabs and birds on childhood beaches. These are now in decline, due to human activity. The “museum” explores a possible restructuring of society for a more sustainable future. Speaking at the launch, Tracy said: “The exhibition is all about balance, value

Ken Bartley, Tracy McCoey and Andrew Muir MLA.

and sustainability. I used to be a science teacher and taught marine science in Florida so marine issues are the basis of my work. I think art and science are a perfect marriage; we can use art to get an emotional response from the public about science.” Tracy McCoey has been able to create something authentic and powerful. Exploring exploitation of resources and sacred cultural objects, Afterwards is a startling commentary that will stay with you long after you see it. Afterwards launched on 5th February. 107

Live Action Linen Demonstration Another remarkable event from the NI Science Festival programme for 2025 was a live action linen demonstration at Belfast Exposed. The interactive event allowed visitors to be part of the process of linen making by hand under the tutelage of flax farmers and textile makers, Helen Keys and Charlie Mallon. The talented duo have been reviving the Irish tradition of growing flax for fibre on their family farm. As part of a community of spinners, weavers, dyers and processors, they are regrowing this historic industry with a new future-focused approach. This unique event was hosted to complement The Clean Blue of Linen, a photography project by Yvette Monahan which documents the role of chemical-free flax from Mallon Farm in County Tyrone in local supply chains. The exhibition was commissioned by We Feed The UK and will be exhibited at Belfast Exposed until 22 March 2025. It forms part of a national storytelling campaign connecting photographers and poets with food producers, to raise public awareness of positive solutions to climate change, wildlife recovery and social justice. Live Action Linen took place on 14 February.

UT PARTNERSHIP

25 Years of Stylish Living Ulster Tatler speaks to Stylish Living’s Evelyn Mehaffey as they celebrate 25 years in the interiors industry. without our wonderful and talented team. If you love what you do, you will never feel like you have worked a day in your life. Where do you draw your creativity from at the start of each individual project? My creativity firstly comes from getting to know our clients and building up a relationship; finding out how they live in their homes and what they would like to achieve. Our inspiration is drawn from the architecture of the client’s home, location and surroundings. The creative design process is very much based on experience, individuality, and product knowledge. We travel extensively to fashion capitals like Paris and Milan, to name but a few. This allows ourselves to keep abreast of upcoming products and styles.

How do you plan to celebrate 25 years of interiors excellence this year? It is an incredible accomplishment – 25 years! Throughout April we are going to have a 25% discount off all giftware and accessories in our home experience showroom. In addition, we will be doing an amazing giveaway, which you can enter on our social media platforms and will run the entire length of April. On a more personal level I am celebrating 10 years of being cancer-free. To mark this occasion, we will be hosting an event in the showroom later this year to help with the vital research and raise funds for breast cancer. How has Stylish Living evolved over the 25 years? As the founder and creative director of Stylish Living, I opened the doors on 1st April 2000 as ‘Biggie Best’, a South African interior franchise, with a beautiful showroom in Lisburn town centre. Stylish Living today is still located in Lisburn, but slightly further out. In 2019 we embarked on the building of our 8000 sq ft. Home Experience Showroom with private

parking. The vision which we created was a unique one-of-a-kind experience. Rather than the normal open showroom floorspace, we wanted to create an exact replica of a home. We achieved this by building 20 actual rooms: from lounges to bedrooms to bathrooms and everything in between. This allows clients to visualise how their home can be transformed by the team at Stylish Living. Fully furnished and accessorised showcasing the finest furniture, most luxurious fabrics and exquisite interior collections from around the world. You are very passionate about interior design; where did your love of design come from? I have always had a passion for interior design, even during my first career as a hospital ward sister. I feel very privileged to have had a second career that I love, spanning now 25 years since I started my own interior design business, Stylish Living. It has been and always will be an absolute privilege and pleasure to create timeless, elegant homes for our clients. Of course, this could not have been achieved

How would you summarise interior design? For me interior design is the heartbeat of the home, turning clients’ dreams and aspirations into reality. Every day is a different experience, working on behalf of our clients with architects, builders, bespoke cabinetry makers, sourcing and designing furniture, soft furnishings,

lighting and adding the finishing touches with accessories. Our team of talented professionals are dedicated to crafting interiors, which blends beauty, functionality and practicality. The greatest satisfaction on completion of a project is seeing the finished aesthetic reflecting our clients’ dreams. Is there anything you would like to say to your clients? We at Stylish Living acknowledge all of our lovely clients who we have had the privilege of working with over this period. We are very much looking forward to many more years of creating exceptional interiors. Please feel free to visit our showroom Monday – Friday 10am – 5pm, where you will be made very welcome. Museums & Galleries In this edition we look at the vibrant and extensive arts scene across Northern Ireland with a focus on museums and galleries. As cultural and educational hubs, museums and galleries are home to rich displays of history and art – both traditional and contemporary. Galleries allow us to experience the power and beauty of art while museums place us in historical contexts, giving us perspective on past eras and historically significant moments. They are the perfect place to visit on the weekend or during the school holidays as they appeal to people of all ages – not to mention there is always something new to learn. In this feature, Ulster Tatler takes a look at some upcoming exhibitions at galleries and museums.

A Story Behind Every Item

Irish Linen Centre For over 30 years, the award-winning Irish Linen Centre, located in the heart of Lisburn City Centre has been telling the story of Ireland’s world-famous linen industry. Its resident exhibition, ‘Flax to Fabric’, takes visitors from ancient Egypt through to industrial Ireland. Learn how flax was grown and prepared, and watch expert spinners turn coarse flax into fine yarn. Travel through the spinner’s cottage, and see how the whole family was involved in producing linen. There are a variety of interesting objects on display – from linen found in the tomb of Tutankhamun to damask made by Coulson of Lisburn that adorned the tables of royalty. You can expect a unique and interactive visitor experience – have a go on the spinning wheel, chat to gallery attendants about the flax processes, and watch the handloom weavers make Irish linen in the weaving workshop. Tours can be booked for groups of five or more. Complete your visit by browsing the shop, which stocks a wide range of Irish linen and artisan crafts, as well as books on the history of the linen industry and Lisburn area. The Irish Linen Centre & Lisburn Museum has a programme of exhibitions, events, school workshops, and community engagement projects all year round. For more information, visit their website, follow on social media, and subscribe to the digital newsletter. Open Monday to Saturday, 9:30am – 5pm.

The County Museum, Dundalk is one of the country’s greatest secrets. With a collection of over 80,000 items every aspect of growing up in Louth is lovingly presented over three galleries of permanent exhibition. Each and every item in the collection has a story behind it – be it the Ferrari-red, three-wheeled Heinkel motor car, or examples of stitchcraft from the 1890s. These are stories which elevate the artefacts beyond the banal to something more gripping providing an insight into a world long since gone; a life which, in an Irish context, uniquely mixed the agricultural and the industrial, the rural and the urban. The County Museum, Dundalk is one of the country’s best kept secrets but, sometimes, the fun of a secret is the sharing. More information can be had by contacting the museum on: 00353 42 93 92 999.

Carthago Restaurant in Moira serves authentic North African Mediterranean Tunisian cuisine. Tunisian cuisine is the magic combination between North African Barbere, Arab culture and hints of the Mediterranean south coast. Tunisian cuisine uses olive oil, fresh herbs and spices like ras el hanout and harissa, These rich flavours combined with lamb, beef, chicken and seafood make for delicious dishes. Tunisian couscous with lamb is the country’s national dish, but we also have many other types of couscous with vegetables, fish and seafood. We offer different types of stew, tagines, spiced with harissa and tomatoes or mild with saffron and lemon. We have lots of dishes like nwasser, which is a spicy steamed pasta; rouz jirby, which is steamed rice with meat, spices and green vegetables; and shakshouka with salads.

ABOUT ME I’m Sabeh Sendi, originally from the very north tip of Tunisia, in the Mediterranean city of Bizerta. I love cooking, it is something we have to learn from a young age. I worked in different jobs as a chef and then decided to open a Tunisian restaurant to showcase our food and our culture. The people of Northern Ireland love our food, we have a lot of return customers and always new faces. Tunisia is a beautiful, magical and exotic country with beautiful beaches, nature, rich history and this is reflected in our cuisine.

New book launched! Sabeh Sendi has just released a fabulous cookbook entitled, ‘Carthago Flavours’, which focuses on Tunisian cuisine, offering readers a comprehensive exploration of the flavours and recipes from the region. With a specific emphasis on cooking and food-related content, this book is ideal for those interested in expanding their culinary skills and knowledge. Available at the restaurant in Moira and on eBay and Amazon.

Brika • 1 sheet of thin brik pastry or filo pastry. • 1 tablespoon of mashed potatoes, 1 tablespoon of chopped parsley and onion. • Pinch of salt. • Pinch of Tunisian spices ras elhanout. • Add some harissa for some heat if you wish. • Mix all place in centre of the pastry, poached an egg fold the pastry sheet and fryer. • Serve with slice of lemon.

An Integral Part of Ballyhackamore Horatio Todd’s, named after the famed local pharmacist, first burst onto the scene in Ballyhackamore in 2010, earning national recognition at the time by being awarded with the UK Bar Design of the Year. “We chose the name Horatio Todd’s because we wanted to embed ourselves in the area as a venue our customers could be proud of, and we were looking for a suitable connection. We wanted to be a community pub, but with High Street standards and quality,” said director, Stephen Magorrian. “From the start, we have been very well supported.”

Horatio’s remains an integral part of Ballyhackamore, still operating to exacting standards. Freshly cooked local food is served all day, seven days a week, in both the bar and adjoining restaurant. The venue boasts a premium drinks selection, an excellent cocktail menu, and live entertainment Thursday through to Sunday, supplemented with DJs on Fridays and Saturdays. A particular highlight is the Charity Quiz, held every second Tuesday, which has raised funds for many local charities, and welcomed most enthusiastically has been the recent extension to the beer garden, in

F O C U S O N NEW BUSINESS START UP

New Business Start-Up When starting a new business there are a number of things to take into consideration. Is there a market for your product or service? Before making the jump into self employment, you must be certain that people or other businesses have a need for the product or service you intend to supply. How strong is the competition to your business? Is competition in your chosen sector intense, or weak? Do you have any Unique Selling Points (USPs) to differentiate yourself from the competition? Have you secured funding for your startup? Many new businesses are self-funded, however, others may require a business bank or loan. Ensure you have a contingency fund in case start-up costs are higher than you initially expected. Are there any industry-specific issues you should be aware of? Make sure you apply for any licenses or organisation memberships if they are legally

or otherwise required in your line of business. Also ensure you have adequate insurance cover in place – this is mandatory if you have any employees. Have you got the right skills to run your business? Try to be objective and honestly assess your own skill set (ask colleagues, family members and friends for their input). You must be honest about your weaknesses as well as strengths and be prepared to seek outside help if it is needed.

your all to your new venture. Only when you are prepared to give 100 percent to a business is it likely to succeed.

Are you personally suited to running a business on your own? Although there is no blueprint for a successful business owner, you do need ‘guts’ to go it alone, tenacity, and to be prepared to give

What business structure are you going to use? The majority of small businesses are run as sole traderships, partnerships or limited companies. You should consider carefully which structure suits you and your business going forward.

Future of Inheritance Tax

Inheritance tax (IHT) is charged when an estate is passed from a deceased individual to any number of beneficiaries. If an individual’s estate is worth more than £325,000, inheritance tax is payable at 40% on anything over that threshold. If you are bequeathing your home to your children or grandchildren, the threshold increases to £500,000, provided your estate is worth less than £2,000,000 in total. The autumn budget announced some key changes which will see more estates being exposed to IHT: 1. Freezing of IHT Thresholds: The nil-rate band (£325,000) and the residence nil-rate band (£175,000) will remain unchanged until April 2030. 2. Inclusion of Pension Funds: From April 2027, unused pension funds will be included in the estate for IHT purposes. 3. Reform of Agricultural and Business Property Reliefs: From April 2026, the 100% relief will be limited to the first £1 million of combined assets, with a reduced 50% relief on the excess.

THINKING OF STARTING YOUR OWN BUSINESS? Whatever the reason for entering the business world, and no matter what the level of entrepreneurial talent the individuals may have, a number of dangers exist.

• Your product or service should have a proven or tested market, but must not conflict with the patent or legal rights of an existing business.

INITIAL CONSIDERATIONS In order to make your business a success there are a number of key factors which should be considered:

BUSINESS STRUCTURE There are three common types of business structure:

• Commitment - starting a business is demanding. Determination and enthusiasm are essential.

• Sole trader: This is the simplest form of business since it can be established without legal formality. However, the sole trader is personally responsible for the liabilities of the business.

• Clarify your idea, making sure you have a clear business concept. Is it solving a problem? Is there a demand for your product or service? • Create a business plan, outlining the key elements of your business, detailing how it will operate, grow, and achieve its goals. It serves as a roadmap for your business and a tool for securing funding or investors.

• Partnership: A partnership is similar in nature to a sole trader. Again the partners are personally responsible for the liabilities of the business. A further possibility is to use what is known as a Limited Liability Partnership (LLP), this can protect the partners from being personally responsible for liabilities of the partnership but there are legal regulations to comply with.

• Skills - you need managerial, financial, technical and marketing skills. If you do not have these skills personally, they can be found in a partner, employee or acquired with training.

• Company: The business affairs of the company are separate from the personal affairs of the owners, but again there are legal regulations to comply with. Limited liability means that the shareholders’ liability is limited

to the amount they invest in the company. Directors manage the company’s operations and are responsible for its legal and financial obligations. OTHER CONSIDERATIONS • Tax on profits • National insurance Contributions (NIC) • Value added tax (VAT) • Tax implications of employing staff (PAYE) • Raising finance • Insurance • Pensions • Registering the business • Construction Industry Scheme • Accounting systems HOW WE CAN HELP Whilst some generalisations can be made about starting up a business, it is always necessary to tailor the strategy to fit your situation. Any plan must take account of your circumstances and aspirations. Whilst business success can never be guaranteed, professional advice can help to avoid some of the problems which befall new businesses.
