EDITOR’S LETTER

EDITOR: Christopher Sherry

Nobody’s Hero Although he’s not exactly an unsung hero I don’t think Colin Bateman gets the recognition he deserves. I have been an admirer of his work since his debut novel, the ground-breaking Divorcing Jack, was first published way back in 1995. Almost as soon as it appeared there was a great buzz around the novel and an even bigger buzz when it was made into a movie. At the time, a few of my friends even took the day off work to stand in as extras for a party scene in the movie. I rewatched it recently and I think I spotted the back of one of their heads. Perhaps one of the reasons I liked the book so much was that it had a bit of attitude about it and it was unapologetically northern Irish. It was also not about the Troubles which was novel at the time. You have to remember this was a decade or so before Belfast became something of a movie location hotspot. Indeed it was the polar opposite which made the fact that it was being filmed here and was about here extremely refreshing. I’m currently working my way through Bateman’s memoir Thunder and Lightning: A Memoir of the Life on the Tough Cul-de-Sacs of Bangor and I pleased to see that he has lost none of his gift for sarcasm; in fact he even gives the Ulster Tatler a grudging mention. Turn to page 62 to read Jane Hardy’s interview with Bateman.

COLUMN November 2022

LIFE & TIMES EDITED BY KATHY CLUGSTON

Kathy Clugston is a freelance radio presenter. She chairs the long-running BBC Radio 4 programme ‘Gardeners’ Question Time’ and presents the weekly entertainment show ‘The Ticket’ on BBC Radio Ulster.

A TEST OF TOLERANCE This month, Kathy discusses her lack of tolerance for noisy members of the public, but is she being unreasonable? I’ve been enjoying the TV series Am I Being Unreasonable? on BBC iplayer recently, in which Daisy May Cooper plays an unhappily married woman with a secret past. You’ll be glad to hear that the plot doesn’t resonate with my own personal life but the title certainly does. It is taken from the online forum Mumsnet, where a thread succinctly titled AIBU? lets women vent about the behaviour of others, frequently partners, in the hope of receiving the absolving response “Of course YANBU!” (You Are Not Being Unreasonable). My age and the resultant exodus of my hormones may be a contributing factor but I find myself constantly incensed by people’s behaviour. I seem to have developed a particular sensitivity to noise. At a comedy gig recently, a woman behind me had such a persistent high-pitched cackle, which she manifested at every single line whether it was actually a joke or not, it was all I could do not to turn around and deck her. Every train journey - a time in which I like to let my mind wander while staring out of the window - is ruined by some eejit using their phone with the speaker on, treating us to the other side of a banal conversation or the bleepbleep of a game. Like most people, I am not brave enough to do more than emit the occasional pointed sigh or, if it’s really bad, give them The Stare, a futile gesture which 100 percent of the time is totally ignored by the perpetrator. I wish I could be more like my London friend Susan who scolds people on the Tube for sitting with their legs too far apart, or, in pandemic times, wearing their mask around their chin. Once, in the cinema, to my horror and delight, she leant across halfway through the film to a noisily munching couple and bellowed “Are you STILL eating those f**king crisps?!?”. They sat motionless, barely breathing, until the

movie finished. If I had my way, all crunchy items would be banned from cinemas and theatres along with wrapped sweets (is there anything worse than the slow unravel of a Werthers Original?). People could still eat, I’m not a monster, it just has to be silent food such as a banana, a Babybel or a muffin (no wrapper.) Somehow Susan got away without anyone hurling insults at her or producing a knife. I just don’t have the same authority. I did once summon up the courage on a plane to ask the chap behind me, who was manically flicking through TikTok or some such, firing bursts of discordant audio my way every few seconds, if he might be so kind as to put on some headphones. He sulkily retorted that he didn’t have any and proceeded to watch his hateful content while stabbing the back of my seat with his knees. If people aren’t assaulting me with noise, they’re moving too much. I recently went to see the great James Taylor playing in London, an sublime experience marred only by the constant toing and froing of audience members to the loo and, worse still, to get beers. Beers! While actual James Taylor is singing! Can’t people survive for half an hour without a drink in their hand? Why isn’t the bar closed at gigs while performers are

on stage, like in theatres? To be fair, some people need the loo a lot and that can’t be helped but if you can’t wait for the interval at least wait for some applause during which to stand up, block everyone’s view and stumble your way along a whole row. I’ve been at events where groups of friends laugh and talk constantly throughout as though the performer is just there to provide an ambient backdrop to their fun. The rest of us, who’ve paid good money to hear someone we love play/sing//talk, do not enter their thoughts. Have we lost all sense of how to behave in society? Are we so used to watching everything in our homes now, chatting and peeing and raking about at will, that we’ve forgotten what it is to be among strangers? I don’t know, but I’m pretty sure IANBU!

THIS MONTH’S OBSESSIONS: Hot Yoga – I’ve started doing this in an attempt to calm myself after enduring the annoyances listed above. I’m still in the beginners’ class but the stretching and sweating seems to take my mind off most things.

Can I Tell You A Secret? – Six-part true crime podcast from the Guardian about a man who cyber-stalked women in his home town in Cheshire and made their lives an utter misery.

Nakd bars – Vegan snack bars made with dates, nuts and fruit with no added sugar. Great for satisfying those sweet cravings. Some of the supermarkets do their own (cheaper) versions, which are just as good.

My

Benjamin Gould Artistic Director, Commedia of Errors

1. What do you love most about your job? Directing is about bringing together different creative facets and steering the vision of various creatives to form a unified image. If you get it right, there’s a moment when the light, set, sound and acting all come together to lift the words from the page into something magical. 2. What has been your career highlight to date? Directing The Gap Year at the Lyric was a highlight for me. It was Commedia of Errors’ first mainstage production and a huge step up from studio work. Suddenly, I was working with a bigger company, cast and set, and I really tried to make use of the extra resources. There were a few risks taken but the Lyric were incredibly supportive, and everyone did a great job. We created something amazing that had audiences buzzing and sold out by the last week! 3. What are your favourite hobbies/ activities outside of work? I spend a lot of time thinking, so it’s great to get outdoors to exercise and clear the mind. I love surfing and cycling, as they allow time to enjoy and absorb your natural surroundings. I also watch a lot of films and started a film club in lockdown. Each week, we’ll watch something and then discuss it as a group.

4. What is your daily routine? I’ll get up just after 7, do a little exercise, then it’s breakfast, into the office from 10-6 and then home for dinner. After dinner it’s maybe a film, TV or heading out. 5. Do you have a specific fitness regime? I used to cycle a lot and got really into measuring speed and improvement, but it detracted from the joy of it. Now I do a variety of activities to stay fit – cycling, running, some balance and mobility work and then at the weekend, I’ll head to Portrush for surfing or out on the bike for a longer spin. 6. Do you have any tips for staying positive? Finding your purpose in life makes everything a little easier. Also, try not to worry too much about what other people think. After that - eat well, exercise, get plenty of sleep and stay connected to people. Your support network matters. 7. What do you think is the best thing about living in Northern Ireland? The amazing nature right on our doorstep. Our coastline is phenomenal, and you can get out of the city in minutes. Also, the people are so friendly and supportive.

8. What is your mantra or favourite quote that you live by? A friend of mine’s dad used to say: ‘Everything in moderation, especially moderation.’ It’s always worked for me! 9. Who has been your biggest influence? My parents. They equipped me with the tools and ethos that have driven and underpinned everything I do. My wife Clare (also CoCreative of Commedia of Errors) has been huge. She supports me and helps propel me forwards.

10. FAVOURITE Movie: 2001: A Space Odyssey is probably the greatest film ever made, but I think I could watch Monty Python’s Holy Grail every week and still laugh. Band/musician: It used to be Led Zeppelin, but now I listen to such a variety of stuff it would be hard to choose. Book: The Third Policeman for its surrealism, comedy, drama and terror. Restaurant: Bo Tree Thai is phenomenal, and I really like Chilli House and Macau. Holiday Destination: Italy, for food, climate, culture and history. Rome was one of the most amazing places I’ve ever visited, every corner has something interesting, and it’s only a short train ride from the beach. Drink: Craft ale or German lager. Meal: Curry. I love those strong flavours and make a mean pork vindaloo. To find out more about Commedia of Errors, visit: www.commediaoferrors.co.uk

BANGOR CALLING

EDITED BY JANE HARDY

Jane Hardy catches up with writer, Colin Bateman as he releases his witty memoir: Thunder and Lightning – A Memoir of Life on the Tough Cul-De-Sacs of Bangor.

A

sked to define the adjective ‘Bangorean’, witty writer Colin Bateman turns serious. “Technically, it refers to somebody whose parents or grandparents were buried in Bangor Abbey Graveyard,” he explains. “That’s not me, I was born in Newtownards.” Yet he has titled his new memoir Thunder and Lightning: A Memoir of Life On the Mean Cul de Sacs of Bangor, with the word Streets crossed out. The young 60-year-old has lived in the Ballyholme area of the city all his life. And clearly likes it. Of course, most people feel Bangorean also means slightly posh, conservative and pretty well mannered. Talking to Bateman, quite a bit of that is true. Describing himself as “spiritually suburban”, the writer says he feels he’s reached a good age. “And no, writing this book hasn’t made me feel older!” He has a couple of sons, Matthew (27) and Isaac (8). So two marriages then, and when the older dad ferries his son to school, people might get the branch of the family tree wrong. The genesis of his memoir is interesting. “I was asked to write a short piece for the Open House Festival in Bangor. It was an event where several writers were telling their stories and they were short of writers, so asked me if I’d step up.” He did, thoroughly enjoyed the experience, as did everyone who heard it read. “It was about growing up in Ballyholme and went down very well.” Then, like most people he had time on his hands owing to Covid-19. “I was basically twiddling my thumbs.” Modestly, Colin Bateman says he does quite a bit of film and TV work. The author of Divorcing Jack, the novel and successful movie starring David Thewlis, also Driven, The Journey and Unhappy Endings, certainly does. So this new writing project began. And Bateman says that accuracy was important. “I had to be truthful, otherwise what’s the point. And there is quite a lot of personal stuff in there, including material about my parents and relationships. Asked if it was hard to write, Bateman says no. Liam Neeson has contributed a complimentary paragraph for the jacket, so you imagine the men must be mates. “Well, we occasionally exchange emails. I first met Liam Neeson in

his New York apartment when he was going to be cast as Ian Paisley in The Journey. Kenneth Branagh was going to be Martin McGuinness.” In the end, Timothy Spall did a brilliant job as Dr Paisley, Colm Meaney also playing a blinder as McGuinness. Bateman has a decent hit rate on his projects and tells me that not a few scriptwriters in what used to be called Hollywood survive on a lot less. “You can actually make a living if none of your projects get made.” Filming and getting funding is a slow process. We discuss the fact that TV and Netflix are having a super creative moment, rivalling the big screen. “Yes, and you have several episodes to develop things.” Colin Bateman started his writing career as a journalist on the Speccy or County Down Spectator. As he says, he did everything – “court reports, interviews”. Did you enjoy the job, I ask. “Not really, I did not like doorstepping or pressing people on things.” His break from newsdesk to writing desk came with Divorcing Jack, published in 1982 but Bateman did not give up the day job immediately. He says his novel wasn’t picked up quickly. “I lucked out and was discovered in the slush pile by Harper Collins.” Bateman says he doesn’t remember having a big celebration – “it’s a long time ago” – but did raise a glass when he won the prestigious Betty Trask prize. “That was worth £10,000, a lot of money then.” Has he been surprised by his journey and deserved success? “Absolutely. When I started writing, I had that Northern Irish thing of thinking ‘Would I ever be good enough?’” He was. Back in the day, Bateman was, in his spare time, a punk rocker. One of the bands he followed has provided the droll title of a key chapter – Half Man, Half Biscuit. He also liked The Clash, but didn’t do the three cords on a guitar routine himself. “There’s never been a musical Bateman.” We discuss the importance of humour, key to Colin Bateman’s oeuvre. He notes it supplies some uplift in tough times. “It’s important in everything I do, it’s the way we’re built, although my work is in the crime genre.” Interestingly, Colin Bateman says that he doesn’t read much

INTERVIEW

So this new writing project began. And Bateman says that accuracy was important. “I had to be truthful, otherwise what’s the point. And there is quite a lot of personal stuff in there, including material about my parents and relationships. Asked if it was hard to write, Bateman says no.

fiction. “I like biographies and factual books. I’ve just been reading something about the Miami Showband. In terms of TV, it’s the same and I enjoyed the documentary on John de Lorean.” Away from the laptop, football is one of Bateman’s passions. He plays five-a-side and is, unsurprisingly, a goal scorer. “Yes, I’m up front.” He supports Liverpool and occasionally travels to a match. “But you can see it all on television. My brother is Man United and he goes to see them quite a bit.” There is also a serious aspect to Colin Bateman’s work, best illustrated by his account of the friendship that developed between the Protestant and Catholic politicians, Ian Paisley and Martin McGuinness. By the time Bateman produced The Journey, Paisley had died so he consulted Ian Paisley Junior about the film. He also met Martin McGuinness. The portrait of both men is nuanced, clever. Bateman’s selfportrait is the same and he captures the mean cul de sacs to perfection.

An extract from the Preface of Thunder and Lightning – A Memoir of Life on the Tough Cul-De-Sacs of Bangor: “I know someone whose pet parrot whistles our loyalist anthem ‘The Sash’ every time somebody comes to their front door. In Belfast, this would be considered vaguely sinister, a reinforcement of historic bigotries channelled through a captive bird with green feathers, the captivity being symbolic and the green being sarcastic. In Bangor, my home town, it’s just funny. That is essentially the difference between the city and the town, between the Troubles and our troubles. We were always just on the fringes of what went on. Even though there was carnage twelve miles up the road, most of what we experienced, we experienced through the television news. We had a chip on neither shoulder. It was a bit like our football supporting. The clubs we were fervent about were Liverpool and Manchester United – close, but still removed; a sea between us, never to be seen in the living flesh. Ours was largely a Protestant town. I was eleven years old before I met a Catholic. We were not aware of injustices, of discrimination, of tensions between communities, because there only was one community. If there were Catholics they were scattered around, there wasn’t some Papish enclave we had to fear. Nice, safe, mostly middle-class, solidly unionist but still vaguely liberal, sardonic Bangor, with its lovely parks and tennis clubs, where a child pretending to be a paramilitary was something to be encouraged and applauded, as offensive as a Morris Dance. I love and hate Bangor with equal measure, but what I can never change about it is that it is home. I once yearned to leave, but now know I never will. It is a remarkable and unremarkable as any other town.” Published by Merrion Press. (£14.99)

How would you describe your style? I think much like a lot of people my style depends on my mood. Living between Belfast and London I can definitely say I’m much more adventurous with my style in London! Soho chic you might say!

for a specific piece the first place I’ll look in are charity shops!

What are your wardrobe staples that you can’t live without? Trainers. It might be a boring answer, but a stylish pair of comfortable trainers that can be styled with different outfits is an essential item.

Do you have a skincare regime? I have naturally oily skin so first and foremost cold water and a good rinse then a splash of NovaClean Hydro or Nivea.

Do you have a favourite designer or high street brand? I actually don’t have a favourite and I’m pretty much across the board. If I’m looking

Do you have any style icons? Ncuti Gatwa, Billy Porter and Beyoncé (of course).

What is your signature scent? Tom Ford. Tom Ford everytime! Are there any haircare products you recommend? Aunt Jackies, for mixed hair like mine. At

the minute after I wash my hair I stick in Aunt Jackies Curls & Coils Curling Custard (that’s a mouthful). How do you keep fit and healthy, are there any exercises or health foods your swear by? I used to dance religiously until I broke my ankle a few years ago but now I go for light jogs to build up the strength so I’m ready for a future Strictly come Dancing bid! In terms of food, every time I am on a health kick my Jamaican grandmother gives me a dirty look when I tell her, then packs a bag of food for me to bring home. So my favourite health food has become my grandmothers cooking!

McBride Fashions

Celebrating 50 years in Business When Valerie McBride opened the doors of McBride Fashions in October of 1972, she could never have anticipated that 50 years later the business would have built up an unsurpassed reputation as Northern Ireland’s premier supplier of leather & sheepskin jackets and coats. McBride Fashions has been and remains a family run local business. Valerie McBride has offered a customer experience throughout the years that is second to none, those lucky enough to know her are well aware of her fun nature. Valerie is a good, honest businesswoman, likeable, colourful and always memorable. Customers often tell of their childhood visits to McBride’s for school uniforms with their parents or their first leather coat. McBride Fashions is based in The Temple Shopping Complex. The Temple was built by the late Sam McBride and has become a landmark itself, sitting centrally between Belfast & Newcastle, Lisburn & Downpatrick, whichever direction you are heading it seems all roads lead to The Temple. In an uncertain time of pandemics and price hikes it is encouraging to see a local business standing steadfast in the heart of the community in which it has grown. McBride’s owes its success in reaching this landmark year to the lifetime dedication of Valerie McBride who is ever grateful to the community and customers who frequent the Temple to shop.

PROMOTIONAL FEATURE

The Healthcare Provider With A Difference Celebrating its one-year anniversary as Kingdom Healthcare after merging with Kingdom Services Group, Kingdom Healthcare continues to position itself as a key provider in supplying Nursing and Healthcare staff to the NHS and private sector across Northern Ireland and England. This month, Ulster Tatler catches up with Patricia Casement, Managing Director of Kingdom Healthcare, to find out more about Kingdom Healthcare’s Recruitment services. What are the benefits of working for Kingdom Healthcare? We are a healthcare agency that cares about its employees, which is why it was vital for us to ensure we have supervisors and support available 24/7 for our carers whenever it is required. In terms of the package, we offer flexible working hours that fit in with different lifestyles and existing commitments, paid-for mileage and time travelled between appointments, which means that our employees are paid on the clock even when they are travelling to the service user’s destination, uniforms, training opportunities, weekly pay and many more is also included. What is the employment process at Kingdom Healthcare? Our vacancies are available on several online career platforms. Candidates can enquire directly through the Kingdom Healthcare website or get in touch with one of the Kingdom Healthcare Recruitment Officers, Hannah Lymph or Gloria King. Once an enquiry has been received, the candidate will be issued with an application form, and an interview or registration meeting will be arranged to assess if they are suitable for the position.

Are there career progression opportunities at Kingdom Healthcare? Of course! We provide certified professional training and great opportunities for career progression, including a fully funded Diploma in Health and Social Care. In Domiciliary Care, there are opportunities to progress to Quality Monitoring Officer, Patricia Casement, Managing Director Assistant Coordinator and Coordinator roles. We support this progression by offering the opportunity to study for QCF levels 2, 3 and 5 in Health and Social Care and also by providing training in a number of areas. Can you tell us more about Kingdom Healthcare’s recruitment services for the NHS and private sectors? Working with highly qualified Nurses, Domiciliary Care Assistants and Healthcare Assistants, who have a wealth of experience in both the public and private sectors, we help healthcare organisations with their recruitment and staffing challenges. We have provided thousands of healthcare staff to nursing homes, residential homes, hospitals and clinics over the years, and can help healthcare organisations find the right people for their teams. We have an ‘always-on’ recruitment policy, which means that we have new healthcare staff registering with Kingdom Healthcare every week. Our expert recruitment team works with organisations to help to alleviate staffing concerns, provide short-term and long-term staffing solutions and support healthcare businesses in seasonal periods when additional staff are required.

Do you need a nursing/medical background to work as a Carer at Kingdom Healthcare? This is a question we get asked a lot. For Healthcare and Domiciliary Care Assistant positions, no background or experience is required as Kingdom Healthcare will provide full paid training and shadowing shifts, providing the employee with the best foundation needed to start their career with us. However, Domiciliary Care Assistants require a driving licence and access to a car. For Nursing positions, we require the employee to be a registered Nurse, live on the NMC register. Kingdom Healthcare also welcomes retired Nurses to join the team as their experience can benefit a more junior team. 32 English Street, Downpatrick BT30 6AB (028) 4483 0486 Email: enquiries@kingddom-healthcare.co.uk Website: www.kingdom-healthcare.co.uk

COLUMN November 2022

H E A LT H M AT T E R S

EDITED BY REBECCA NELSON

Rebecca is founder and Director of Physiotherapy at Apex Clinic and Apex Headache Clinic.

Say goodbye to headaches, migraines, vertigo and tinnitus for good This month, Apex Headache Clinic founder and Spinal & Headache Physiotherapy Specialist, Rebecca Nelson, discusses headaches, migraines, vertigo and neck-related tinnitus and how Apex Headache Clinic has a high success rate in treating and clearing these debilitating conditions.

Are headaches or migraines making you miserable? Persistent headaches and migraines can literally ruin the quality of people’s lives, leaving them desperate to find a solution that brings relief to their pain. What many people don’t realise is that headaches or migraines can actually be triggered from damage, stiffness or stress in the structures of the upper neck region. Poor posture or hours spent hunched over desks and computers commonly cause persistent neck-triggered headaches and migraines, while repeated heavy lifting, a previous fall or an accident are also factors.

Is vertigo or dizziness ruining your life? Dizziness, originating from the upper neck region of the spine is called cervical vertigo and is very commonly overlooked as a source of vertigo. It originates from stiffness or damage of the upper two neck joints of the spine. Often the person experiences no actual neck pain, only dizziness and this is why they are often misdiagnosed as having dizziness from their inner ear. At Apex Headache Clinic, our team of specialist physios have been successfully treating and clearing cervical vertigo for years, thanks to our unique regime of manual treatment to the upper neck region called The Nelson Vertigo Approach™. During your initial consultation, one of our specialist physiotherapists will assess your neck to establish if it is involved in causing your vertigo and to differentiate it from vertigo from the inner ear. A treatment plan can then be started to clear it. One of the features of cervical vertigo is that it does not respond to drugs given for inner ear vertigo.

At Apex Headache Clinic we fully understand your pain. We know, from over 30 years of clearing headaches and migraines, that our specialist unique physiotherapy treatment regimes rather than painkillers can be the long term cure that you are looking for. The specialist physiotherapists at Apex Headache Clinic have been fully trained in The Nelson Headache Approach™, which is a treatment regime for clearing headaches and migraines not offered in any other clinics in Northern Ireland or the UK. Due to our extremely high success rate with this regime, we have patients travelling from all over the UK and further afield for our treatment.

Is tinnitus getting you down? Tinnitus is usually experienced as a ringing, hissing, whistling,

apex

buzzing or clicking sound that can be intermittent, or constant. It is an intrusive, annoying and, in some cases a devastating condition for sufferers. Although it may be associated with damage to the hearing system, tinnitus can actually be caused by injury or stiffness of the upper neck joints, even when there is no neck pain. The good news regarding tinnitus which is triggered from the neck is that, in most cases, it can be treated and cleared at Apex Headache Clinic. Treat and beat pain at its source As with all niggles, aches and pains, we recommend that you get to the root cause of your symptoms as soon as possible. Once diagnosed, Apex Headache Clinic’s specialist manual physiotherapy treatment regimes can clear all of these conditions, restoring your quality of life and allowing you to get on with enjoying life symptom free again. If you would like to book an appointment with Apex Headache Clinic, contact us on: 028 9048 4153. No GP referral is necessary.

HEALTH MATTERS

“I’m now clear from vertigo after having Covid thanks to Apex Headache Clinic” 52-year-old, business owner Mark Scullion from Bellaghy, suffered with vertigo after having Covid which had turned his life upside down. After thinking vertigo might be something he would have to live with, he visited Apex Headache Clinic in the hope that he could get even a little relief. Here, he shares how the clinic’s unique regime of specialist manual physiotherapy treatment for vertigo and dizziness, called The Nelson Vertigo Approach™, cleared his vertigo meaning he could start to enjoy life again. Mark, when did your vertigo begin? I used to get vertigo at the end of the hay fever season each year but only for a few weeks and it would be infrequent and not restrictive, it didn’t affect my day to day life. At the beginning of January 2021, I took covid and my vertigo spiralled out of control. It was horrendous. How did the dizziness affect your life? It affected my life such that I couldn’t function or do the things I could normally do. It affected my work life majorly; I would have to leave board meetings. I also had no energy. I was a very active person who trained a lot and climbed mountains including climbing Mount Everest just 4 years ago

there was no other source of help or information out there, my GP wasn’t able to help me and I even went for a medical as I was starting to get paranoid that there could be something else underlying. The treatment at Apex Headache Clinic was my only hope and I wanted to give it the best possible chance. How has your life changed since having treatment? Much to my disbelief after attending my twice weekly sessions the vertigo began to subside. I thought this was something I was going to have forever but now I am 99% clear from vertigo. My treatment sessions are now spaced out to once every 3 weeks. I used to think that I would have vertigo forever and not be able to do all the activities that I enjoyed before but now I’ve got my life back.

from attending Apex Headache Clinic. I made an appointment for an initial consultation there and at first, I was sceptical as the mobilisation of the neck involved very little movements and I was used to something a lot more aggressive from previous treatment elsewhere. I attended twice a week with my specialist physiotherapist, which was quite a commitment as I live 40 miles away, but my health was my main priority and my aim was to get myself better no matter what. COSMETIC SKIN TAG AND MOLE REMOVAL Consultant Plastic Surgeon Mr. Chris Hoo specialises in the removal of cosmetic moles and skin tags. In the vast majority of cases all of these lesions are benign. But if there is any clinical concern about the nature of the lesion it can be sent off for testing.

THE NUMBER ONE WIG SPECIALIST IN IRELAND

WIG & HAIRPIECE BOUTIQUE HAIRLOSS CLINIC

Q & A with Chris Hoo

Q: How are skin lesions removed? “In most cases these can be done under a local anaesthetic. If there are no concerns about its nature they can be either shaved off, or excised. Some skin lesions can also be treated by freezing the skin – termed cryotherapy. All options are discussed with the patient beforehand.” Q: Does it hurt having these removed? “Since these are treated under local anaesthetic it shouldn’t! The worse bit is having the injection of anaethetic, which many patients describe as a mild stinging sensation. Cryotherapy does not even need an anesthetic.” Q: How long does the procedure take? “This depends on what’s being done, but most procedures take between 15 and 30 minutes or so.” Q: Can I drive home afterwards? “That depends on you! If you are the sort of person who can drive home after a filling at the dentist then there should be no reason why not. But if you are a bit squeamish, it’s best to bring someone with you. They can at least tell you how brave you were, even if they don’t need to drive!” Q: What about aftercare? “If stitches have been necessary these are generally removed after 5 – 7 days. For best results a combination of steristrips and scar massage are required and which you need to do will be discussed.”

After

Before

Q: Will I have a scar? “Scarring is an inevitable consequence of surgery in anyone’s hands, so yes. But of course the whole point is to be cosmetic and so everything is designed to minimise this. It’s best to consider this as replacing one cosmetic blemish with another one, which should be much better. But it is unrealistic to expect an invisible scar no matter who your specialist is.”

The Season For Giving... Ulster Tatler speaks to Michelle Baird, Head of Marketing & Corporate Fundraising, Ulster Orchestra on All Things Christmas gift giving;

What is at the top of your Christmas list this year? To enjoy some quiet, family time after a hectic year! What is the best Christmas gift you have ever received? A beautiful handmade necklace from Robinson Goldsmiths in Bangor from my husband. It was a silver boat with two people in it and was called ‘The Voyage’ which was a song I sang at our wedding ceremony with my trio, The Leading Ladies. Sadly, it strangely disappeared after a few days and we’ve never found it.

Michelle Baird

Do you have any advice on Christmas Gift planning and how to stay organised and within a budget? Start to buy throughout the year and keep an eye on when there are sales. Most importantly, keep on top of everything you’re buying or you’ll end up with far too much come Christmas! What are some good ideas for stocking fillers or secret Santa presents? Something unique and practical that the person will actually use.

Samuel Gelston’s to Strike Gold with New Campaign Samuel Gelston’s is bringing some gilded glamour to the UK this season with a series of exciting collaborations that explore the golden roots of its Irish Whiskey. Award-winning Belfast-based mixologist Emily Doherty and leading gold prospector Vince Thurkettle will be fronting the new Gelston’s Gold Rush campaign, which will unveil gold inspired cocktail recipes, a gold panning event in the home of the brand and an exploration into Ireland’s prospecting past. Wild gold expert and jewellery maker Mark Bell will also be on hand to add some seasonal sparkle by creating a showstopping gold bottle of Samuel Gelston’s whiskey, which will be revealed in a festive competition this December. Established in Belfast in the 1830s, Samuel Gelston’s was purchased by daring young Irishman Harry Neill in 1869 who made his fortune in Australia’s spectacular 1851 Gold Rush. Upon returning to Belfast, Harry used his new found wealth to rebuild the Gelston’s business and export his ‘liquid gold’ for the world to enjoy. Vince explains: “I love all the gold rush stories and have prospected out in Australia in the area where the 1850s gold rush took place, and Harry made his fortune. I have recovered gold and treasure from a tragic shipwreck from that time, the ‘Royal Charter’ which was bringing gold miners and their families home - and carried about 150 million Euros worth of gold. If Harry had been on that ship we wouldn’t now have these fabulous whiskeys. “Whiskey and gold, two key ingredients to all the great gold rushes – I am so pleased that they are being brought together again, and absolutely delighted to be a part of this Gelston’s adventure.”

Mixologist Emily looked to the past to re-create a classic cocktail for today’s whiskey enthusiasts. She explains: “My inspiration behind this drink was to take the classic ‘gold rush’ cocktail and put a modern twist on it. Hot honey is something that became very popular this year and there is a good reason, you get the sweetness and floral notes coming from the honey with the light spice and black pepper from the chilli. The other ingredients in this cocktail are the type of ingredients you see in a Margarita but they work incredibly well with whiskey, the orange juice opens up the sweet notes in the spirit and the salt rim balances out the sweetness.” The Gelston’s Gold Rush 50ml Samuel Gelston’s Blended Irish whiskey 30ml Fresh orange juice

20ml Lime juice 10ml Hot honey*

Shake all ingredients over ice and strain into an iced punch or rocks glass, with a salt rim, and a burnt orange slice as garnish. *To make the hot honey, pick your favourite honey and add two hot chillies, or add in two teaspoons of dried chilli flakes, leave for two days then strain. Samuel Gelston’s Spiced Star Emily’s inspiration behind this drink is the iconic golden star on the Gelston’s bottle. And with the festive season fast approaching, she created this drink to enjoy on a cold winter day. She explains: “Samuel Gelstons Irish Cream Liqueur is a warm hug in a glass, it’s smooth, creamy and sweet, and perfect with hot coffee and spiced brown sugar syrup.” 50ml Samuel Gelstons Irish Cream Liqueur 10ml Spiced brown sugar syrup *

60ml Americano coffee Double cream to top

Pour all ingredients into a steamed Irish coffee glass and layer your thick cream on top with a spoon. Garnish with the star anise. *To make your own spiced syrup mix one cup of brown sugar and one cup of hot water with your favourite spices, Emily’s are cinnamon, cloves and star anise.

QUIETLY LUXURIOUS Ulster Tatler’s Joanne Harkness visits The Bushmills Inn.

A

utumn is my favourite time of year, with the crisp weather and cosy evenings – not to mention the beautiful golden scenery. As the kids would say these days ‘it’s a vibe’. My fiancé and I always like to plan a weekend staycation at this time of year as the summer rush is over and it breaks up the long stretch until the Christmas holidays. Over the years our destination of choice was always Bushmills where a member of his family had a holiday home and we were able to create such great memories. We always made the most of our time away, doing all the tourist things such as visiting the Bushmills Distillery (highly recommend this), the Dark Hedges and Giant’s Causeway. Bushmills and the surrounding areas have so much to offer! On our many trips to Bushmills we have always been intrigued by The Bushmills Inn – it looked picture perfect from the outside, blending into its historic village surroundings and seemed to attract visitors from across the world. We were delighted to get the opportunity to go for an overnight stay to discover it for ourselves. On arrival we spotted the United States of America flag flying and later learnt that The Bushmills Inn fly the flag for the guests who have travelled the furthest – what a lovely sentiment! In fact, they have a dedicated flag room, where all the flags are neatly displayed in glass cabinets. The glow and warmth of the open fire in reception immediately drew us in, the authenticity of this hotel was clear to see. We were shown to our room on the second floor, which was the Tower Suite. It had everything you could want in a room and more; a four-poster bed, seating area, Nespresso coffee machine, mini fridge, dressing room area, views of the River Bush and much more. The standout for me was the bathroom, it was the bathroom of my dreams! It was spacious, with a freestanding bath, his & hers wash hand basins and L’Occitane toiletries – it was giving me interior design inspiration. After relaxing in our room we smartened ourselves up for dinner, which we were really looking forward to as we had heard rave reviews about the food. The restaurant was quietly luxurious, with the mumur of guests chatting and enjoying each others company. The A La Carte dinner menu was very impressive, with a strong link to Irish cuisine, such as the Guinness and onion soup, Northern Irish beef steak and Irish lamb. I opted for a light starter of Caesar salad, while my partner chose the breads and dips – they were both faultless. I then had the pork tasting dish for main course, which featured crisp pork belly, pork fillet which was tossed in mustard and nuts, a posh sausage roll and a black pudding macaron. Each element was so delicious, and paired with the buttery champ, it went down a treat. Stephen went for the duck, and he has been talking about it ever since, so it must have been good! Dinner was made complete with a chocolate and coconut fondant and butterscotch sundae – we were perfectly full. The Bushmills Inn recently won an award for customer service and this was made evident during our stay, especially during the dining experience. The staff were very attentive and friendly, making us feel at ease throughout. After dinner we made our way to the cosy Gas Bar, which was like stepping back in time with the wooden beams, antique furniture and

roaring fire. It was the perfect end to the perfect evening, as we sipped on a cocktail and of course a pint of Guinness. After a very comfortable nights sleep in our four-poster bed, we woke up bright and breezy for breakfast. This time we sat in a booth in the part of the restaurant that dates back to the orginal building – the 17th century stables and wine cellar. Again, the breakfast menu had everything we could have wanted; porridge, eggs benedict, omelettes, plus more. Stephen of course had to have the full Irish cooked breakfast (he likes to make the most of a hotel breakfast), while I went for the avocado on toast, with poached eggs – a tasty and trendy addition to the breakfast menu. We had one last walk around the hotel before check out at 12pm. The hotel has so many hidden gems, the upstairs area, which was the original Coach House is now home to the Afternoon Tea experience and there is even a cinema! In fact, they have Movie Nights on a Thursday, which combines a two-course meal and throughout December they will be showing a range of classic Christmas movies. I will certainly be returning for that – not that I needed any excuse. 9 Dunluce Road, Bushmills, BT57 8QG T: 028 2073 3000 www.bushmillsinn.com

The Perfect Christmas Gift...

Ulster Tatler speaks to Rachael Niblock from the Bellfield Centre of Wellbeing on All Things Christmas gift giving.

What is at the top of your Christmas list this year? Family, friends, food and fun, probably sounds a bit cliché, but true. What is the best Christmas gift you have ever received? It was from my best friend and travel buddy who gifted me my first Kindle, she was appalled at me taking around 10 books every year on holiday with me, truth be told my case still always weighed lighter than hers! With just my Kindle, I now have more room for shoes and Elemis sunscreen. Do you have any advice on Christmas gift planning and how to stay organised and within a budget? Rule 1: make a list. Rule 2: stick to the list! Think about the individual, what do they love, what is important to them and get them a voucher. It could be for their beauty salon, hairdresser, garden centre, a magazine subscription or favourite restaurant. Therefore, helping to support local businesses at the same time. What are some good ideas for stocking fillers or secret Santa presents? Every stocking needs a Terrys Chocolate orange, a good book and a little sparkle, the CND Shellac Ruby Ritz nail varnish should get you through the festive season.

Council ‘makes it local’ this Christmas Cllr Michael Savage, Chairperson, Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, speaks to Ulster Tatler on the council’s continued support of businesses in the district this Christmas. Cllr Savage said,“There has never been a more crucial time for supporting local businesses. Rising energy prices and soaring inflation coupled with diminishing disposable incomes means that every penny is being counted. And rightly so. With that in mind, we at Newry, Mourne and Down District Council have once again demonstrated our firm support for local businesses in the district via our ‘Make It Local’ campaign. This promotional initiative, which has been running for several years now, is designed to promote and bolster homegrown companies across Newry, Mourne and Down, by encouraging people to shop and spend locally. While it’s easy for us to extol the virtues of our local enterprising spirit, ‘Make It Local’ provides a dedicated platform for the unique business offering that the district boasts. In our area, we have an outstanding portfolio of diverse and resilient businesses – and we must nurture them if we want to keep them going. That’s why I am encouraging people – both

Lois Shannon and Ian Shannon from John A Shannon’s in Kilkeel, alongside Newry, Mourne and Down District Council’s Chairperson, Councillor (Cllr) Michael Savage.

from within the district and further afield – to shop locally this Christmas. Earlier this year, our council issued a call for businesses from both urban and rural locations, operating instore and/or online, to submit an expression of interest to feature in ‘Make It Local’ over the next year. It fills me with great pride to say that we received an overwhelming response from businesses wanting to contribute to this uplifting campaign. I, personally, would like to thank those companies who have demonstrated their

commitment to our area by expressing an interest and subsequently signing up to become part of the promotional drive. We’re inviting not only those who dwell in Newry, Mourne and Down to shop locally; our invitation extends far beyond our council border, with the promise of a warm and wholesome welcome.” For more information or to get involved in the Make It Local campaign, please visit the council’s website: https://www. newrymournedown.org/make-it-local.

Ulster Tatler speaks to Joanne Thompson from Skinn Therapy on...

All Thing s Christmas Gift Giving What is at the top of your Christmas list this year? A trip away to watch Ireland /Ulster play rugby. What is the best Christmas gift you have ever received? My favourite gifts are the ones you don’t ask for, especially when the kids have taken their pocket money and picked an item. These are the most special gifts. Do you have any advice on Christmas Gift planning and how to stay organised and within a budget? I always make a list of who I need to buy, and my budget for them. Each time I buy a present I write down the price so that I am not tempted to keep buying. I always leave it until December to go shopping, it stops me from over spending. What are some good ideas for stocking fillers or secret Santa presents? You can’t go wrong with an Eve Taylor aromatherapy candle starting from £14.50. Spacemasks are also amazing stocking fillers as the cost is £17.50 for five meaning you can spilt the box and use one for each person. You can’t go wrong with a tan removing bath bomb for only £9 each and what every fake-tan fan needs.

Access All Areas

Ulster Tatler’s Chris Sherry visits The Spencer Hotel in Dublin.

the O’Connell Bridge – which takes you to the heart of the action - is an easy 15-minute stroll away. The hotel is also a short walk from Connolly Station and Bus Aras. We drove down and the hotel has access to a nearby car park for its guests. So whatever way you choose travel there, the hotel is very well placed for Northerners. When I was having a ‘pre-read’ about the hotel a few days before I travelled, I was delighted to learn that it has its own pool. I am a keen swimmer so on the Sunday morning before breakfast I went for a quick dip. The pool is great. It’s around 18-metres long and is perfect for a good workout. There is also a fully equipped gym but I didn’t make it that far - there is only so much exercise I am up for on a Sunday morning. Dublin has literally dozens of hotels to choose from so there’s something for everyone’s budget. Whether you happen to be in town for a concert or not, The Spencer scores on all fronts. The location, food, ambience and facilities are just as you would want them.

D

ublin certainly leads the way on the island of Ireland in terms of hosting large concerts and sporting events and on any given weekend there’s usually something big happening. Over the summer months the city played host to Garth Brooks’ mammoth series of concerts, not to mention numerous rugby, soccer and GAA matches. There are obvious benefits for Dublin in staging such large-scale events - they fill up the hotels, restaurants and pubs with happy punters and provide a great boost to the local economy. If you are going to a concert in the 3Arena (or indeed Croke Park) an ideal place to stay is The Spencer Hotel. It is located close to the arena and is practically next door to the Dublin Convention Centre. On the night we stayed at The Spencer, Madness was playing at the 3Arena and Comic Con was in full swing at the Convention Centre. After a long day strolling around Dublin I was in need of a rest and decided to position myself in the foyer of the hotel in the late afternoon to watch the world go by. Just outside the hotel I spotted scores of middle-aged (mostly male) Madness fans milling around, interspersed with numerous groups of Comic Con attendees dressed as a variety of super heroes. It was a curious sight and kept me mesmerised for quite some time - I am easily amused. The hotel is relatively new so it still looks great. The bar and restaurant area are one big open-plan space which works really well. We had dinner in the East Restaurant and a pre-dinner drink in the Lobby Lounge. The food is Asian-inspired and it was delicious. There really is no need to venture any further for sustenance. Our room had a small balcony which was terrific. After dinner we sat out and enjoyed the view of the nearby River Liffey and watched the constant stream of humanity flowing past far below. If you do want to check out the shops or go for a night on the town,

Cullybackey has won Gold and Category Winner at the 2022 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), UK finals of the Britain in Bloom awards with the village taking the top prize in the Large Village Category. The County Antrim village also received a Certificate of Achievement in the Horticultural Excellence Award. In total 45 groups from across the UK competed in eight categories with each vying for a gold, silver gilt, silver or bronze medal. Cullybackey volunteers Elizabeth Boyd and Bertie McNeilly were also crowned Community Champions with only 11 volunteers receiving this prestigious accolade. Britain in Bloom, one of the largest horticultural campaigns in Europe, is run by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) and works yearround to create a cleaner and greener Britain through community action. A Warm Welcome Awaits In Colourful Coleraine Coleraine is celebrating success in this year’s Ulster in Bloom awards after it won the Large Town category. Welcoming the achievement, the Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council, Councillor Ivor Wallace, said: “This is fantastic news for Coleraine and I want to congratulate everyone who helped to make it possible. Our Parks staff take great pride in their work, with their florals beds, baskets and displays creating a positive environment for the enjoyment of our visitors, shoppers and the local community. An increased use of wildflower areas has been especially well-received in recent times, and we know these play an important part in preserving our biodiversity. Having recently joined the all All-Ireland Pollinator Plan, recognition from the prestigious Ulster in Bloom competition is further welcome news for our Borough as we continue to showcase our commitment to enhancing the local environment.”

Coleraine’s Ulster in Bloom award follows on from its success at the High Street Heroes Awards where it was named joint winner of the High Street of the Year title. Coming up to Christmas, why not enjoy a visit for yourself and explore the town’s inspiring mix of independent businesses and high-street names. With the beautiful Town Hall as the focal point of the Diamond area, and the welcoming pedestrianised centre, it’s the perfect place to spend a day. Did you know it’s also home to Causeway Speciality Market - the largest outdoor market of its kind in Northern Ireland? The Speciality Market will be back in the town centre on Saturday 12th November, Saturday 26th November, Saturday 10th December and Saturday 17th December from 9am - 4pm offering a fantastic mix of local produce, artisan food, arts and craft items. Please note the Market is weather-dependent so please keep an eye on Causeway Speciality Market on Facebook for the very latest announcements.

UlsterTatler FOCUS ON

Wonderful Walls The empty walls in your home are filled with possibilities. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a small box room, or a large family space – everyone is eventually faced with the difficult decision of how to spruce up a blank wall.

A

bare wall can often feel refreshing, especially with a room that is otherwise decorated in maximalist fashion with bold furniture and an array of colourful accented decorations. However, a blank wall can often feel cold, bare and in need of some much-needed TLC. If you are ready to turn those stark walls into stylish, centrepieces then our Wonderful Walls feature is the right

place for you. In this edition of Ulster Tatler we take you through all things walls. We are featuring a range of wall designers and decorators, giving you the chance to see what is on offer. Whether it is a modern or classical style you are searching for, from statement-making wallpaper to tiled feature walls, our guide includes plenty of places to inspire you and help you get the look you want.

147

PAGE147.indd 1

28/10/2022 12:34

Top Tips... 5 Ways To Make The Most Of Your Empty Wall Space

1. Wallpaper - Make the colour accents in your room pop through the use of wallpaper. Choose tones that complement your current decor and watch how your new feature wall will tie the other accessories in your room together.

1.

2. Gallery Wall - Display frames with your favourite photographs in an arbitrary order. Note that the frames don’t have to match but will look best if they have similarities or share a theme! 3. Book Wall - If it is a floor to ceiling blank space, a bookcase is an interesting way to display your favourite trinkets and reads. Alternatively, invisible shelving could be the way to go. Displaying alternative items instead of hiding them away is actually a great way to add colour and texture to a room.

4.

4. Mirrors - If you want to brighten up a room or make it look bigger, the use of mirrors can change a rooms atmosphere instantly. Opt for one large mirror to make it a feature or several smaller mirrors if you want to pursue a quirkier look. 5. Tiling - A tiled feature wall needs little other embellishment. With so many designs, shapes and colour schemes available, you have the option to make a full statement or opt for a more understated tone.

ARTIST EVANA BJOURSON: CONNECTIONS WITHIN THE WAVES The work of Portrush based artist Evana Bjourson incorporates human interaction, seascapes and coastal experiences observed through the lens of transience. Her latest body of work, prepared for the Swell Festival’s ‘Seascapes and Seascripts’ Studio Exhibition saw the artist conduct an in-depth study of the sea as a connective force culminating in a new series of artwork aligned with poetry. Bjourson’s new collection demonstrates how the sea brings people together, from sharing a wave through to building sea-swimming communities. Light sources are often central features in her work and a limited palette tends to be used, drawing out predominant, dramatised colours in a scene. Evana Bjourson originals and limited edition prints can be viewed at Margey & Bjourson Art Studio & Gallery Portrush and on www.evanabjoursonart.com. ARTS DIARY

“Everytime I hear her read, I think what an extraordinary pleasure and privilege it is to be living in the time of Wendy Erskine.” EDITED BY KELLIE BURCH KELLIE@ULSTERTATLER.COM

Wendy Erskine Reading The Seamus Heaney Centre recently had a jam-packed week as it welcomed students from Villanova University through the Writing Through Conflict programme.. The week-long programme of events, inspired and in honour of the Villanova students and organised by Rachel Brown, kicked off with a day of workshops with former Seamus Heaney Fellow and Belfast-based writer Wendy Erskine before culminating with a reading from her new short story collection, Dance Move. The reading, which I was lucky enough to attend, took place in the Out of Office brewery. Opened in 2019 and located on the second floor of the Ulster Sports Club, this bold yet intimate setting puts an emphasis on craft beer and underground music. It also doubles exceedingly well as a distinctive event space. Seamus Heaney Centre Director Glenn Patterson welcomed guests, such as critically acclaimed novelist and English Professor at Villanova University, Alan Drew, as well as Villanova University and Seamus Heaney Centre students. When introducing Wendy, Glenn said: “What is extraordinary about Wendy Erskine is that it’s almost impossible to remember a time when she wasn’t voicing this city. Her two stellar collections (Sweet Home, 2018 and Dance Move, 2022) have completely reset all the devices that you could imagine. They have actually just created a new way of looking, a new way of thinking, and new ways of reading this place. Every time I hear her read, I think what an extraordinary pleasure and privilege it is to be living in the time of Wendy Erskine.” As Wendy read extracts from several of her short stories, such as ‘Memento Mori’ , ‘Max and Gloria’, and the title story ‘Dance Move’, it is abundantly clear how creative and inventive she is as a writer. Having only started writing in 2016 when she had time off from teaching, it’s more than impressive that she already has two such accomplished collections already under her belt and shows just what a natural talent she is. And there was no better person to welcome the students of Villanova University to the cultural epicentre that’s Northern Ireland. Wendy Erskine’s reading from Dance Move took place on 10 October.

Propaganda: The Musical

transported back in time to the birth of the Cold War. The ambitious production uses scaffolding extending from the orchestra pit to capture the rack and ruin of this once effervescent city. The action mostly takes place in an apartment shared by Russian former war photographer, Slavi (Darren Franklin) and his German lover, Hanna (Joanna O’Hare). The play opens with Hanna singing the complete earworm of a song, ‘Like What You See Boy?’ as she poses seductively for Slavi who - with the dubious assistance of an American Red Cross serviceman, Ruddy (Oliver Lidert) - sells the images on the black market to make ends meet. Slavi however dreams of making a name for himself as a photographer that can be taken seriously. Together with their ball-gown clad neighbour Magda (Rebecca Caine), whose evening gowns are all that survived the bombing that plighted the city, Hanna

Propaganda: A New Musical, composed by double Ivor Novello-nominated composer Conor Mitchell, is quite simply unlike anything I’ve seen before. A co-production by the Lyric Theatre and Belfast Ensemble, and part of the Belfast International Arts Festival, Propaganda is at its heart a Soviet love story. The story is centred around the powder keg of Berlin in 1949. During the last days of the Blockade, a group of artists are doing everything they can to survive, with the dream of escaping to the West. But, as with any story worth telling, things don’t go to plan. The press night was, unsurprisingly, a sold out affair. Guests such as Lady Mary Peters, journalist and broadcaster Mark Carruthers OBE, Peter Wilson AKA Duke Special, Seamus Heaney Centre’s Rachel Brown, and Arts & Business CEO Mary Nagele, took their seats and were

hatches a plan to get Slavi the recognition she believes he deserves. Enter silver screen siren Margot (Celia Graham) and her sidekick Gerhardt (Matthew Cavan). Twists and turns follow which see the band of artists find themselves in a perilous situation at the hands of Comrade Poliakoff (Sean Kearns). Conor Mitchell’s vision for Propaganda is intricate and innovative and sees him weave together many elements from catchy tunes, exquisite vocal performances, an insanely talented 14 piece orchestra, to dramatic story telling, faultless dance routines, multimedia staging and so much more. After the two and a half hour show, I emerged from the theatre exhausted from the high octane energy sustained throughout. But one thing this play knows how to do is thoroughly entertain. And that’s anything but fake news!

141st RUA Exhibition The 141st Royal Ulster Academy annual exhibition is back, bigger than ever, at the Ulster Museum! Launched as part of the Belfast International Arts Festival, the RUA Annual Exhibition, sponsored for the 15th year by KPMG, is one of the most eagerly anticipated exhibitions in Northern Ireland’s cultural calendar, providing a unique platform for acclaimed artists and emerging talent to showcase their artwork in the Ulster Museum. Guests spotted at the launch, housed in the Ulster Museum’s largest gallery, included Neil Hamilton, upcoming star of the Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year; TV comedian and exhibiting artist Colin Murphy; and former RUA President Carol Graham, to name a few. In addition to providing a platform for contemporary painting, sculpture, film, printmaking, installations and photography, this year also sees dedicated spaces in the exhibition for showcasing entries from video

artists for the first time ever. Speaking of this year’s exhibition, RUA President Dan Dowling called the exhibition ‘absolutely wonderful’ and the works on display as ‘the best of the best’. The adjudicator for the 2022 exhibition was Belfast-born artist, writer, DJ, broadcaster and journalist, Joe Lindsay, and after much deliberation, 330 pieces were selected to be showcased from over 2000 submissions. From those selected to be exhibited, several caught my eye, from the show-stopper ‘Esther’, an oil on polyactic acid bust by Colin Davidson to ‘Our Lady of the Sun’ a mixed media piece comprising ceramic, concrete, steel, acrylic resin and plastic, by Ayelet Lalor. I was also drawn to Jeffrey Morgan SRUA’s oil on linen, ‘Frank Ormsby - Beneath Napoleon’s Nose’; and Connor Maguire’s ‘Paper Dreams’. After welcoming guests to this year’s exhibitions, Dan Dowling also paid tribute to those artists who are sadly no longer with us,

such as Chris Dearden, SRUA; David Evans; and Peter Ford, Honorary Member RUA. This year’s deserving award winners were also recognised on the night. From Brian Ballard SRUA, winner of the Karl Patrick Burns Award, sponsored by the Devenish Gallery, and Barbara Allen ARUA, winner of the Watercolour Prize, sponsored by The Errigle Inn, to Simon McWilliams VPRUA, winner of RUA Perpetual Gold Medal Prize, sponsored by NIAVAC, and Stephen Shaw ARUA, winner of The Anita Young Bursary for a Mid-Career Painter, sponsored by the Tyrone Guthrie Centre, the talent on display was unmistakable. In my opinion, a visit to the RUA Exhibition never disappoints. And for me, one walk through is nowhere near enough. I’m planning a return visit ASAP to see what other gems catch my eye. The launch of the RUA Exhibition took place on 13 October. It runs until 3 January 2023.

Bridesmaids of Northern Ireland Last month, I got to attend the launch of GBL Production’s Bridesmaids of Northern Ireland. The snippet performed at the time was enough to have me eagerly awaiting the arrival of the full show. Walking down the aisle of the Grand Opera House on 17 October, this production, written by the superbly talented Diona Doherty (who was an absolute scene stealer in Derry Girls and Give My Head Peace), did not disappoint. Loosely based on the Hollywood film Bridesmaids, guests including the play’s director Gerard McCabe, playwright

Carla Ferguson and Nicole Connolly.

Arlene Nixon, Janice Hannigan, Lorraine McVeigh and Helen Hamilton.

Gail Laverty and Clare Baine.

Martin Lynch and make-up artist Gemma McGarrett, enjoyed the Northern Ireland incarnation which is bursting with local humour and lots of heart. Diona Doherty plays Becky, maid of honour for her childhood friend Sarah. However, when Sarah’s new BFF Tiffany is also added to the bridal party, tensions run high. Becky and Tiffany play a game of one upmanship to show who is the better friend to Sarah. This is done with delightful creativity including an energetic dance off in the Merchant and a rib tickling improvised interpretive dance on the hen do. It’s not all laughs, however. Becky’s calls to her mum who lives in England, whilst riddled with offbeat humour, also show that Becky is feeling increasingly lonely and that’s why the stakes feel so high when it comes to her friendship with Sarah. The cast, who also include Kathryn Rutherford as Sarah and Jayne Wisener as Tiffany, each play their part with perfection.

B&B By The Sea is an exciting new entertainment series coming to BBC Northern Ireland this November. Set in a Victorian guesthouse at the picturesque Downhill Beach in County Londonderry, the tranquil location is a place of calm and a chance for celebrity guests to explore their connections to the sea and coast. It is not all rest and relaxation, however, as Sharon and Rory from the B&B team put them through their paces with a range of activities. The celebrities also slip on their aprons to help Great British Menu chef Alex Greene prepare a gourmet

Rutherford excels at walking the tightrope between her working class roots and her upper-class aspirations. And, when in full bridezilla mode, with demands including vetting the guests’ outfits, it’s hard to know whether to be impressed or terrified. Wisener likewise shines at encapsulating a socialite from Helen’s Bay. But the moments we see the chinks in her Gucci armour is when she really shines. Then there’s Diona Doherty. As well as writing a razor sharp script bursting with heart, her delivery on stage was impeccable. Her comedic timing is superb and overall she provided the icing on this very delightful (wedding) cake! With creative staging, iconic set pieces and unbridled humour, Bridesmaids of Northern Ireland is one (bridal) party you won’t want to miss. The press night of Bridesmaid of Northern Ireland took place on 17 October and ran until 22 October. meal using the best of local produce that audiences will be keen to try at home. Famous faces booked into the B&B include Northern Ireland native Gloria Hunniford, Strictly judge Shirley Ballas, Dragons’ Den investor Deborah Meaden, First Dates host Fred Sirieix and Paralympian swimmer Ellie Simmonds to name a few. B&B By The Sea is made by Afro-Mic Productions with support from Northern Ireland Screen. The series, which is a cocommission with BBC Daytime, will also be broadcast to audiences across the UK in the New Year.

BOOK EXTRACT

Jan Morris: Life From Both Sides This month we feature an extract from Jan Morris: Life from Both Sides, A Biography by Belfast writer, Paul Clements. In front of an audience of 150 people a tall, broad-shouldered, well-dressed, whitehaired woman strides confidently on to the stage of the Chelsfield Room in the Royal Festival Hall. From the fifth floor, lit up on an autumnal night, London provides a romantic backdrop for this auspicious occasion: through the large window behind the stage, Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament are visible, while the London Eye looms in the foreground. But the eyes of the anticipatory audience are focused on the speaker. The date is Wednesday 10 October 2001, part of Jan Morris’s sevenplace book tour. A hush falls as she walks at a steady pace up to the podium. Carefully, she sips the water, clears her throat, fixes her glasses, pauses for a few seconds, eyes bright and nervously alive gazing across a sea of faces, then flashes a wide smile to the left and the right. The proceedings begin on a whimsical note as she tells a story against herself. Morris once stumbled and lost all her papers while taking to the stage at the Hay-on-Wye Literary Festival; she tripped, fell flat on her face and her papers ‘flew all over the place’. It helps to break the ice when she says this would not be the done thing at the Royal Festival Hall. Reading from a prepared speech, she begins in unemotional and measured tones by outlining, one by one, the reasons why Trieste and the Meaning of Nowhere is to be her last book: the physical and mental stamina required; the fact that the words do not come so fluently at the age of 75; her weakening self-discipline; how she is tired of her prose style and worried it has become archaic; she is fed up with the literary brouhaha, publishing’s corporate treadmill, the paraphernalia of publicity and of propagating herself at book festivals. A

roar of laughter erupts from the audience. Could she really mean all this or is she just being playfully eccentric? Gleefully, Morris works her admirers, giving a masterclass in expressiveness. Her talk is filled with spontaneity and ebullient wit, her enjoyment at the sense of occasion is palpable. Speaking with a clear and assured upper middle-class accent, her words are delivered effortlessly. Thirty-five years of living in North Wales has done nothing to dent her chirpy English tones. For added effect, she occasionally throws her arms in the air, making a gesture to explain a point, laughing out loud. In the back row, a woman whispers loudly to her partner, ‘Isn’t she the bee’s knees?’ Morris briefly stumbles over her words and her hand knocks the microphone. She collects herself, and with another sip from the glass shows her love for declarative one-liners: ‘Ahh, Gin!’, she exclaims followed by a pause before her polished aperçu, ‘If you believe that, you’ll believe anything’. The fun-loving side of Jan Morris makes her as much a performer as a writer. Her talk – about the trials and tribulations of a literary life – continues with a rant against the critics. ‘The biggest problem,’ she declares, without a specific mention of any book, ‘is between publication and critical response. I care what the reviews say. Reading them is a perennial trauma to me. When they are bad, I have been suicidally depressed and can quote things written about my first book in 1956.’ Those present are a mix of young and old; many are dedicated and committed Morris readers, watchers and devotees. Others, unfamiliar with her work or her life, have come not knowing what to expect, but they all want to scrutinize someone who has reached the stage of being a ‘national institution’.

Glentoran FC was founded in 1882 by Belfast industrialist Victor Coates, who believed that sport encouraged healthy camaraderie and was good for the soul. He brought together an eclectic mix of young players primarily from the east of the city, fashioning them into an indomitable side led by its captain, the fiery Irish Italian, Modesto Silo. In less than four years, the leafy park pitch on which the team played could no longer accommodate the thousands of Belfast folk who held a burning desire to see the Glens play. Just over a decade later and after several temporary residencies, all east of the River Lagan, Glentoran leased six acres of land, soon to become known as the Oval, in the shadows of the Belfast shipyard owned by Harland and Wolff. As thousands of families moved in from the Ulster countryside to find work in the yards, the numbers following Glentoran FC continued to grow beyond belief. Whilst thousands toiled to construct the world’s biggest ship RMS Titanic during the week, at weekends, they gravitated the short distance onto the Oval terraces every other Saturday. The men who built the giant ships also played for their local team. In 1914, Glentoran travelled to Austria to lift the first football trophy won by professional British side on continental Europe, the Vienna Cup. Which many believe was the first ever European cup and won many years before the formation of UEFA in 1955. The proximity of the Oval to the Belfast shipyard would cost Glentoran greatly, when, with war raging across the world in 1941, the ground and everything

O F A N

in it was bombed beyond recognition during the Belfast Blitz. The stadium was mistakenly believed to be part of the industrial war effort. The club lost its very playing kit. It took the blood, sweat, tears and money of thousands of supporters nine long years to rebuild the Oval, brick by brick. The rebirth proved the catalyst for this east Belfast institution. Decades of glory followed especially against elite European opposition. A young George Best, a third generation Glentoran supporter watched from the stands as his local side developed into a club capable of wounding elite European opposition. Glentoran FC has proved worthy opponents for sides such as Benfica, Rangers, Juventus, and Paris St Germain. European nights in some instances attracted crowds of over 40,000 spectators. The decline in heavy industry in the city combined with a three decade period of civil unrest precipitated a wane in the club’s fortunes during the 1970s and early 80s, but still the heart continued to beat albeit intermittently. Success in the years to follow, has often been sporadic and not without the drama of financial peril. In 2019 a takeover of the club, one of the few remaining Belfast icons, heralded a brand new dawn for Glentoran, bringing professional football and investment. After 140 years that same heart beats stronger than ever.

Glentoran Football Club - 140th Anniversary

140th Anniversary Match Glentoran FC marked their 140th year with a fantastic 5-0 victory against Carrick Rangers on 7th October. The club played their first ever match on that day 140 years ago, so it was very fitting to have a Premiership match at The Oval on that date to pay tribute to the club’s history. During the half time break Glentoran legends were introduced to the crowd and the club’s owner Ali Pour was also in attendance. To celebrate this special birthday Ali Pour announced the launch of ‘The 140 Club’ a

body set up to assist those in need within the local community during this time of financial hardship. The 140 Club aims to raise and contribute £50,000 which will allow hundreds of families across Belfast to gain access to food packages, adequate clothing and gifts for children in the run up to Christmas. Businessman Ali said: “I work in the energy sector and have first-hand knowledge of how rising energy costs directly impact inflation and ultimately the cost of living, I am worried that many

families on our Belfast community will suffer in the coming months, which is why I am proud to launch The 140 Club.” Club General Manager, Desi Curry said: “Gelntoran FC has been the heartbeat of community interaction for 140 years now. Through the good times and the bad, the club and their supporters have come as one, to combat and overcome the challenges that everyday life brings to its community of east Belfast. The resilience shown by all has been remarkable.”

Glentoran Football Club - 140th Anniversary Glentoran team, 1914.

Club History One Saturday before the War, a team of Belfast footballers took to the field of the Hohe Warte stadium in the Rothschild Gardens of Vienna to contest the Vienna Cup. They won the game emphatically in the most unlikely of circumstances. The Vienna Cup is today considered by FIFA, the governing body of world football as the oldest remaining European cup in existence and the first to be won by an Irish/British team on foreign soil.

D

uring May 1914, thirteen workers in the Belfast shipyards disappeared from the scaffolds and the factory floor for two weeks. They were footballers with Glentoran Football Club, a team formed up beneath the gantries of Harland and Wolff, teak-tough yardmen, born and raised between the banks of the River Lagan and the Connswater. War on the continent was looming, the conversations in the snugs of the local hostelries and church pews were of Home Rule and the very visceral loss of RMS Titanic, a ship they had fashioned with their own hands. Glentoran were in the ascendency though, the most successful team on the island of Ireland, their triumph had somehow raised eyebrows all across Europe. In Vienna, two successful businessmen Martin

Mauthner and Karl Hochman invited the boys of Ballymacarrett to compete in a tournament to be played in Berlin, Prague, Vienna, Bratislava, and Budapest, against the finest club sides in Germany and the Austro-Hungarian Empire. They would be paid handsomely, enough to put decent food on the tables of the houses in the terraced streets of the district.

This unlikely adventure would see men, who could only wash the grime of the Belfast shipyards away properly at the weekend in the Templemore Avenue baths, rub shoulders with German nobility and the highest echelons of the ill-fated Habsburgs. Glentoran travelled 3,500 miles in twelve days, across nine countries, playing six games and on the way defeating the biggest team in German Hertha Berlin 4-1. The Vienna cup is the only Glentoran artefact to survive the Belfast Blitz as it was retained by the club’s chairman on his own mantlepiece.

Nearly all of them lived within a mile radius of each other. Storm clouds were gathering in the region, The Austrian army were building fortifications all along the Danube whilst the Royal Navy was engaged in daily target practice in the English Channel. Would the lads of Glentoran FC venture into such a maelstrom? Of course they would. 166

Glentoran Football Club - 140th Anniversary

At the Helm Ulster Tatler speaks to Glentoran manager, Mick McDermott.

Where did you get your start in football? I am orginally from Glencairn at the upper end of the Shankhill and I attended Boys Model School. I left school in 1992 on a football scholarship through the University of Rhode Island. I ended up playing and coaching in the States for 14 years. In 2006 I moved to Abu Dhabi where I worked with a football club for five years, before moving to Iran to work with the national team. I then spent five years in Dubai and in 2019 I made the decision to come back to Northern Ireland – so that was a total of 26 years living away. How did it differ working internationally? Football is football no matter where you go, but it was strange coming back to Northern Ireland. I thought I had been away from my mother, father, brothers and sisters for 26 years – and my wife, even though she is from California said what about moving back home? The Glentoran project came up and along with Ali Pour who bought the club in July 2019 we decided to do this venture together.

How will Glentoran be marking the 140th Anniversary? We have just launched the 140 Club, which is a community initative. All clubs in Northern Ireland are a big part of their local communities and Glentoran has always been a massive part of east Belfast, when you think of the area you think of Harland & Wolff, Titanic and The Oval. This year is particularly challenging for everyone with the cost of living crisis so this was the right time to invest more in our people. Our owner, Ali Pour is comitted to investing a minimum of £50,000 this year, with every penny going directly to people from the community. We also have some big games coming up which are being televised. We are going to be playing a Sunday game which is the first time the NIFL has allowed that. It will be against Cliftonville on 20th November on Sky Sports, so we plan to have some events around that in terms of stuff for the kids and hospitality areas. On Boxing Day we play Linfield, which is a big one and this will be televised on BBC.

Do you have any particular highlights from your time at Glentoran? Winning the Irish Cup will always be up there, but what we are most proud of is taking a club which was bankrupt and in three years turning it into a professional, stable club, with a growing fanbase – season tickets have tripled in the last three years. We have a full time squad, who are highly competitive and capable of challenging for trophies. To get to this point has taken a lot of work by a lot of people. What historic legacy has Glentoran created during its 140 years? Our Vienna Cup win will always be remembered. FIFA has actually asked to borrow the trophy for a year and will be exhibited in the FIFA Museum in Zurich as part of their global exhibition – so it is going to be the trophy that represents Northern Ireland. That is the reason we put the star above our badge this year, to recognise the first ever European trophy, and Glentoran won it!

Glentoran Supporters have their say... Rick Warwick, Lead Singer Thin Lizzy & Black Star Riders Speaking from his home in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, die hard Glentoran supporter Ricky Warwick front man of Thin Lizzy and Black Star Riders was keen to add his congratulations. “During my recent visit home, it was great to see Glentoran riding high again on the crest of a wave. I follow every kick of the ball as often as I can, even out on the road on tour, and regardless of the time difference wherever I am in the world. It’s incredible to imagine that the Glens have been around for 140 years. It’s very early on in the campaign, but with a fair wind, who knows, maybe this is our year. That would be an incredible way to celebrate a remarkable milestone in our club’s history.” 168

One of my best memories was when I joined the team on a trip to Italy when they played Juventus. The Glens lost 5-0 but we had a great three days away and got to experience one of the world’s best football stadiums. I have made lifelong friends through Glentoran and what I love most about the club is that it doesn’t matter what religion, class, colour or creed that you are – Glentoran brings people together.

The award recognises idverde’s ongoing partnerships with multiple social enterprises that have made a real, positive impact on local communities and the lives of individuals within them. The company commented, “Our partnerships with social enterprises have taught us a lot, where we can provide strength as a large corporate there is no substitute for the reach and trust in local communities that the social enterprises have.” idverde would like to thank SENI for their support which has enabled them to grow the strong network of partners they have and will continue to build upon into the future. Social Enterprise Awards The Social Enterprise NI Awards took place this month with over 600 individuals from the private, public and social sector came together for the first time since 2019 at Crowne Plaza Hotel, Belfast, to honour and celebrate the achievements of the social economy sector in Northern Ireland. On the 10th Anniversary of Social Enterprise Awards, a record-breaking number of attendees was reached since the event’s formation. Like any other sector, times are challenging, and organisations are under immense pressure to control costs and generate income to simply, survive. This is no different for social enterprise organisations, however, many of the services or products they provide either directly or indirectly support some of the most vulnerable within the community and are therefore vital. Despite this, the sector continues to grow and thrive which was apparent from the of organisations, teams and leaders shortlisted and awarded at the event. Congratulations to Waterside Credit Union fro winning the Cooperative & Credit Union Award and idverde for winning the Social Partnership Award.

Gemma Fawcett, Sustainability Manager, accepts the Social Partnership Award on behalf of idverde.

CIPFA’S PUBLIC FINANCE LIVE 2022 CIPFA’s Public Finance Live 2022 was CIPFA’s first face-to-face conference in Northern Ireland since 2019. The theme of this event was ‘the future of public sector finance’ and was set against a backdrop of continued political uncertainty both at Stormont and at Westminster. The programme for the event provided insight and advice from experts across a range of sessions covering sustainability in the public sector, the future of the finance workforce, addressing inequalities and the future of place-based cross-sector working in the public sector. The event was chaired by William Crawley and the CIPFA Northern Ireland Branch was delighted to welcome the CIPFA President Jayne Owen to address the delegates. Speakers at the conference included Paul Gosling, Writer and Broadcaster, Colum Boyle, Permanent Swecretary at the Department for Communities and Dorinnia Carville the recently appointed Comptroller and Auditor General for Northern Ireland. For the final session of the conference, delegates welcomed Robin Swann, Minister of Health for Northern Ireland to reflect on the challenges faced by the health sector and the lessons leant from steering the department through a period of a national public health emergency. Delegates had the opportunity to network and attend a range of workshops during the day covering maintaining good governance, the role of the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and tackling fraud and corruption in public services. Being the first face-to-face event since 2019, delegates had a further opportunity to catch up with colleagues and share experiences through an end-of-conference drinks reception and networking event. 172

Multi Award Winning company dedicated to producing the finest free range eggs in the industry Avery Bowser.

CONSIDERING FOSTERING? Avery Bowser, Fostering Services Manager at Action for Children in Northern Ireland, discusses how to know if it is the right time to start your fostering journey. TALK Discuss what you are thinking with your family and friends. Ask their honest opinion whether they think you have the skills to be a foster carer. Things to consider would be: are you empathetic, caring, resilient and patient? If you know anyone who fosters, talk to them.

• Multi award winning, including Great Taste, Irish Quality Food Awards and Blas na hÉireann Gold awards

START READING There are a lot of resources out there that will give an insight into fostering. The Action for Children website features fostering blogs filled with tips and advice. You can also find real stories from our foster carers who discuss what fostering is like for them.

• Family run business • Farm to fork • All hens are free range • High welfare standards • British Lion accredited

DO RESEARCH Now is the time to ask questions. Are you unsure if you meet the criteria to foster? Do you want to know more about fostering? Then contact our fostering team. They will send you a copy of our information pack and chat through any questions you may have. CONSIDER YOUR CIRCUMSTANCES Have you recently had a relationship breakdown, lost a job, or experienced bereavement? If you have had a major change in circumstances in the last year, now might not be the best time to foster. BE HONEST WITH YOURSELF There are questions you need to ask yourself. Such as, are you ready to invite someone into your family and your life? How is your general health, fitness, and wellness? Do you have other commitments or stressors in your life? When you foster, you need to be able to say to yourself honestly that any children who live with you, will be your priority. Fostering is not easy. However, watching a young person thrive in a safe and loving home is such a special and rewarding experience. To foster you need to be over 21 years old, have a spare room and have love to give.
