T

he recent death of Belfast poet Michael Longley was sad news. I didn’t know him well but he was the Ulster Tatler Lifetime Achievement recipient in 2015 and during this period I met him several times. Needless to say, he was terrific company and a pleasure to work with. Despite having received numerous international literary awards, he was still thrilled to accept the Ulster Tatler award. I think he liked the fact that he was in the mix with people from all walks of life: hairdressers, interior designers, sports people etc. “We are all makers,” he said in his acceptance speech. He was part of an incredible generation of Ulster poets and has left an impressive legacy. He will be sorely missed. I recently heard the journalist Fergal Keane say that he carries a book of Michael’s poetry wherever he goes. A good travelling companion if ever there was one.

LIFE & TIMES EDITED BY PAT MCGREGOR

Kathy Clugston is a freelance radio presenter. She chairs the long-running BBC Radio 4 programme ‘Gardeners’ Question Time’ and presents the weekly entertainment show ‘The Ticket’ on BBC Radio Ulster.

Honesty is the Best Policy This month Kathy cedes her column space to her mum, Pat McGregor, who has been wondering about honesty. When I lived and worked in London in the 1960s, I was once called upon to help the police with their enquiries. My friend and I were out for tea and had just left the café when we were approached by a London Bobby who asked if we would come to the police station as they needed tall girls to take part in an identity parade. This sounded quite exciting so we quickly agreed. I can’t remember exactly where the station was but I do recall it being rather dark and grim, not at all like the modern airy buildings you see in TV detective series nowadays. Of course this was over 50 years ago! We waited some time as more girls arrived until finally all seven of us were taken into a long narrow room and placed in line. The suspect was the last to be brought in and she had the choice of where to stand. She chose to stand at the far end from me so I couldn’t really see much. My only impression was that she wasn’t all that tall! It was explained to us that someone had attempted to steal a dress from a boutique and the owner was coming in to try and identify the culprit. I don’t know how the suspect felt but even though I had never tried to steal anything I was extremely nervous. The boutique owner walked up and down a couple of times without success, she then asked if we could all repeat a sentence because the thief “had a Scottish accent”. Well if I was nervous before I was now in panic mode. In those days a Belfast accent was not well known and I was often taken for Scottish. What should I do? I repeated the sentence “I’d like to see that dress” in my best telephone voice and hoped for the best. I’d love to be able to say that this woman picked me out, it would have made a better story, but actually she didn’t choose anyone and I have no idea what happened

to the girl in question. I wonder if identity parades are done using computers now or are people still brought in to stations to take part? It certainly was an interesting experience. Thinking about this set me to wondering about honesty and why some people would steal a dress and others wouldn’t dream of doing so. I grew up in Belfast in the 1940s. We lived just off the Antrim Road near a tram depot. I used to go to sleep to the noise of trams heading in for the night and I was obsessed with them. Many journeys were taken by my sister and me to the end of the line and back again. The fare for a child was 1/2d or a halfpenny. My instructions from home were that if the conductor didn’t get my fare before I got off, I was to give my 1/2d to an adult and ask them to pay for me. Not to do so would be stealing. At 12 or 13 years old I found this extremely embarrassing but I did it when required and it never occurred to me to keep the

money for myself. Old habits die hard and over the years I have found myself telling shop assistants they’ve given me too much change, informing waiters they haven’t charged for that extra round of drinks and generally being an honesty bore. Actually I think most people are honest; true, I’ve had a few things stolen from me but also had items returned: a handbag left behind in a supermarket trolley, a scarf abandoned on a restaurant coat stand and most recently a card case containing all my credit and debit cards, handed in to the coffee shop where I had dropped it on the floor. I’ll finish with a confession. Once whilst unloading my shopping into my car boot I discovered a small item that hadn’t been checked out. In a hurry, I hesitated for a moment, then threw it into the bag thinking “I’m sure I’ve paid for this many times over the years.” That was five years ago and I still feel guilty! I don’t think I’ll be stealing from a boutique anytime soon!

THIS MONTH’S OBSESSIONS: A PLACE TO CALL HOME – Australian TV series available on Amazon Prime. There’s never a dull moment: abuse, murder, suicide attempts, you name it, it’s all here.

SHEDUNNIT – Podcast about classic detective stories. Caroline Crampton and guests discuss authors, plot devices and murder weapons. Available on BBC Sounds.

SPACE MASKS – Eye masks that heat up as you wear them. The original ones in the blue box smell of jasmine and are a lovely way to relax for 15 minutes.

THE STORY BEHIND STORIES PARFUMS ...Tonya Kidd-Beggs on scent, sustainability and legacy, from Northern Ireland with love x How did the name STORIES Parfums come about? STORIES Parfums was born out of my belief that everyone has a story to tell. Whether it’s a cherished memory or a challenging experience, our stories shape who we are. I wanted to create a brand that connects people to their personal narratives – past, present and future – through the evocative power of fragrance. Scents have the ability to unlock deeply nostalgic memories, and I experienced this first-hand. For much of my teenage and young adult life, my happiest childhood memories were overshadowed by early trauma, which led me to live a very destructive life for many years. Taking the time to focus on my own inner healing, I discovered a passion for helping others with unhealed trauma and trained in understanding the profound effects that unresolved pain can have if left untouched. My own healing journey was so successful that I felt compelled to share my experiences with others, helping them find their own path to healing. Although I successfully removed the root of the trauma in my life, I sadly still couldn’t access those good childhood memories – until I began working with fragrance. Our sense of smell is the most powerful of all our senses, closely linked to memory and mood. What we smell has the ability to stir us, move us, and immerse us in an instant. Through my fragrances, I was able to unlock those lost memories and reconnect with my past in a transformative way. I now tell my story through my fragrances in the hope that others will connect with their own stories – past, present and future. What sets STORIES Parfums apart from other perfumers? STORIES Parfums merges wellness with the art of fragrance, creating an emotional connection through scent. My journey with perfumery helped me heal from trauma, and I hope our fragrances inspire others to find comfort, joy and connection. Sustainability is also at the heart of what we do. Over the past four years, we’ve been recognised by receiving multiple awards for our

commitment to sustainability, and we are actively working towards B Corp and Positive Luxury certifications. From refillable bottles and Zamak caps to rock-paper labels, our products embody sustainable luxury. Our fragrances are also gender-inclusive, allowing wearers to define their own story without the constraints of traditional labels. How did you start the brand? As a mother of four, the youngest being twins, I sought a creative outlet as my children grew older. Fragrance has always connected me to people, places, and even my late grandmother, whom I never met but grew up feeling close to through her favourite perfume. This personal connection, coupled with my love for niche fragrances, led me to Grasse to learn the art of perfumery. What began as a personal journey to craft bespoke perfumes evolved into STORIES Parfums. Using the finest raw materials and traditional techniques, I created our first two fragrances – each telling a deeply personal story. These initial creations laid the foundation for a brand that combines luxury craftsmanship with sustainability and inclusivity. Why is the brand so loved? STORIES Parfums resonates with people because it offers niche perfumes, nutrient-rich body care, and our newly launched perfumed candle trio. An industry first, our candle trio is inspired by the top, heart, and base notes of our signature scents, celebrating my passion for being a teaching brand and introducing our customers to the world of niche perfumery. These products not only reflect and support our unique fragrance layering but also educate customers about the artistry behind each fragrance. This creates an emotional and educational experience for our STORIES customers, inviting them to weave memories, emotions, and dreams into their own narrative. Many customers have shared how our fragrances have reconnected them with cherished memories or evoked powerful emotions. Our commitment to high-quality

ingredients, thoughtful design and sustainability sets us apart. Additionally, our gender-inclusive approach ensures that everyone can find a fragrance that speaks to them. You’re a mum of four and an entrepreneur, how do you juggle business and motherhood? My family is my inspiration and driving force. Fragrance has always been a connector in my life, from my grandmother’s signature perfume to my own memories tied to scent. Balancing motherhood and running a business is challenging, but my children are part of the journey. I want to build a legacy not only for them but also for Northern Ireland as we continue to establish Northern Ireland’s very first luxury niche perfume house. It’s about celebrating generational connections and the power of storytelling through scent. What’s your advice for choosing the perfect perfume? Choosing a perfume is deeply personal. Start by spraying the scent on your skin and allow it to develop over a few hours. Fragrances unfold in layers – top, heart, and base notes – so experiencing the full journey is key. Don’t focus solely on the listed ingredients; instead, pay attention to how the scent makes you feel. Let your emotions and instincts guide you. How did you expand from a small business to a global brand? Expanding globally has been an exciting journey. We began as a direct-to-consumer brand, launching our website in 2018. Shortly after, we partnered with renowned retailers like Harvey Nichols, Fortnum & Mason, and Fenwick. We’ve also collaborated with the Culloden Estate & Spa, becoming their first fragrance partner, and are now featured in Brown Thomas, Dublin Airport, de Gruchy in Jersey, and online stores Look Fantastic and Amazon Luxury Stores, and our recent launch into New York City has been a significant milestone. Pop-up events have played a pivotal role,

allowing us to connect directly with customers and build lasting relationships. Competing with larger beauty houses has required creativity, innovation, and a commitment to our brand values. As we celebrate seven years, we’re proud to remain an independent brand. What’s been your career highlight? One highlight has been taking our STORIES Scent Society masterclasses to cities and towns, teaching people about perfumery and how to connect with their own stories through scent. Seeing our fragrances grace the shelves of prestigious retailers and hearing how they’ve impacted people’s lives – whether by rekindling a memory or inspiring a new chapter – has been incredibly rewarding. What’s your advice for aspiring entrepreneurs? Trust your instincts and stay true to your vision. Building a business requires resilience, patience, and a willingness to learn. Surround yourself with a supportive network, and don’t hesitate to ask for help. I positioned myself around some of the best in the world of fragrance and beauty in London, and became a sponge, learning from them. Imposter syndrome is real, and I wish I’d learned how to navigate those feelings earlier. Sustainability is not the cheapest path, but it’s essential. We’ve faced significant costs along the way, but having sustainably sourced ingredients and packaging is non-negotiable for us. Be prepared to adapt, learn, and grow. What are your plans for the year ahead? 2025 will be an exciting year for STORIES Parfums! We’re launching two new niche fragrances – one in spring and one in autumn – each with its own story and carefully curated ingredients. We’re also expanding our bespoke services, including engraving options for perfumes, candles, and body care products. Additionally, I plan to continue to grow my private label and consultancy work, helping others in the fashion, beauty and fragrance industries. My most recent collaboration was creating a perfumed candle for Lady Mary Peters so that she could raise proceeds for the Mary Peters Trust. One of the things I love most is listening to people’s stories and adapting a scent from them, creating a deeply personal and meaningful connection to fragrance; much like an artist works from a blank canvas, so do I. From new global retail partnerships to collaborations with like-minded brands, we’re continuing to champion sustainability and bring unique, meaningful experiences to our customers.

GIRL ABOUT TOWN EDITED BY NUALA MEENEHAN

Goodbye, January! Say Hello to February! And just like that, January is behind us. We’ve survived the post-holiday blues, dry January (for some), and the existential dread that hits when you realise you’ve already broken all your New Year’s resolutions. But wait – here comes February! Yes, it’s the shortest month of the year, but that doesn’t mean it lacks fun. February is often known as the month of love, but did you know it’s also National Fondue Month? That’s right – fondue! An excuse to dip anything into melted cheese or chocolate and call it “sophisticated cuisine”. Need an excuse to gather your friends and dive into some cheese-covered madness? Now you’ve got one! And if the thought of cheese isn’t enough to entice you into February, let’s talk resolutions. By this point, reality has set in. Those ambitious New Year’s resolutions? The ones that started with so much hope in January? Well, February is when we see the true test of willpower. Will you stick to your gym routine or opt for Netflix and pizza instead? It’s survival of the fittest, people!

Celtic Heritage Meets Chic If there’s one thing we can agree on in this world right now, it’s that we could all use a bit of protection, a bit of sparkle, and, frankly, if you’re like me, something gorgeous to hold. Enter Gráinne Maher’s Talisman handbag range – a collection of bags that are less “arm candy” and more “armor”. (Although, spoiler alert, you will look immensely chic). Let’s talk about ANU – the first release of this divine collection by award-winning Irish milliner and designer Gráinne Maher. This bag is for anyone who believes in real love – the eternal kind that never lets go. The design features the ‘Lover’s Knot,’ a seriously intricate Celtic twist that symbolises unity, eternity, and our endless connection with each other. The two knots are stitched together with leather, never to be separated. But here’s the other twist: these bags aren’t just pretty damm gorgeous. They’re meaningful. The knots themselves are symbols of protection, heritage, and the kind of ancient wisdom that makes you feel like you’ve been carrying around a secret history with you. We’re not talking about something that’ll just sit quietly in your wardrobe, mindlessly taking up space. These bags speak. And when they do, they say, “I am part of something bigger than myself. I carry meaning. And of course, I fit your phone, money, and mascara, so really, it’s a win-win.” What’s even better? These bags don’t come with the guilt trip that usually accompanies luxury items. The craftsmanship is ethical, and the artistry is downright stellar. Gráinne’s bags cater to the freespirited, those who appreciate that a handbag isn’t just an accessory – it’s a statement. The Talisman collection blends ancient Celtic artistry with modern boho style, making each bag a little bit of a fashion manifesto. This is the bag cool girls want to carry, because life’s too short to carry a bag that doesn’t have a bit of magic in it. Available now at www.grainnemaher.co.uk. 42

Dr Dean Reid is a consultant psychologist at Rosevale Clinic.

EDITED BY DR DEAN REID

Thinking of Following a Career in Psychology? This month, Dr Dean Reid details the different psychology disciplines and why it is a career path worth following. As students are in the throes of the final stages of their GCSEs and A-Levels, many will be contemplating what they should study at university/college as their first choice or what they will be looking for if they need to go through clearing. I aim to provide insight into the study of psychology in the hope that some may be inspired to study an intriguing and exciting subject. As a lecturer at Ireland’s second oldest college, Carlow College, St. Patrick’s (https://carlowcollege), I have found that the most common question I am asked is: what is psychology? Many people believe psychology is the Freudian approach of psychoanalysis, where the patient lies on a couch as a psychologist asks questions and attributes problems to one’s childhood and parents. While psychoanalysis is a branch of psychology, it is nothing like the comical myth I just mentioned. Psychoanalysis seeks to understand and treat mental disorders by exploring the unconscious mind, the role of early childhood experiences, and the internal conflicts that shape thoughts, emotions and behaviours. Psychology is the scientific study of the mind and behaviour; it delves into the intricate workings of both human and animal behaviour. Psychology is a broad subject with diverse disciplines, such as clinical and counselling psychology; this area focuses on diagnosing and treating mental health disorders. Clinical psychologists work in therapeutic settings, addressing conditions like depression, anxiety and schizophrenia. In contrast, counselling psychologists usually address less severe psychological issues, providing guidance on coping with life stressors, relationship troubles or career decisions. Cognitive psychology examines the mental processes involved in perception, memory, reasoning, problem-solving and language. This subfield investigates how we acquire, store, and utilise knowledge to navigate the world.

Rosevale Clinic Dr. Dean Reid

Developmental psychology explores the physical, cognitive and social changes that occur throughout the lifespan. Developmental psychologists study how individuals grow, learn and adapt from infancy to old age. Social psychology examines how others influence individuals, exploring topics such as group behaviour, social perception and interpersonal relationships. It investigates the impact of societal norms, culture and social pressures on individual behaviour and, my personal favourite, behavioural psychology. Behaviourists concentrate on the analysis of observable behaviour and the effects of environmental stimuli on it. By examining how behaviour is learned and modified through reinforcement and punishment, this branch highlights the significance of conditioning in shaping human actions.

The disciplines mentioned are just a few that a psychology undergraduate has the opportunity to study. Psychology is a dynamic and multifaceted field that encompasses a wide array of topics, from understanding the fundamental processes of the mind to enhancing societal wellbeing. It serves as both a scientific discipline and a practical tool for addressing real-world issues. Whether through research, therapy, education, or public policy, psychology influences human lives and the world around us. As we continue to explore the complexities of human behaviour, psychology’s contributions will remain essential in guiding individuals towards healthier, more fulfilling lives and fostering a deeper understanding of the human condition. As a passionate lecturer and practitioner, I am always willing to offer help and advice. Please feel free to contact me.

Rebecca is founder and director of physiotherapy at Apex Clinic and Apex Headache Clinic.

Has vertigo got your head in a spin this Valentine’s Day? This month, Rebecca Nelson, founder and Spinal & Headache Physiotherapy Specialist at Apex Clinic & Apex Headache Clinic, discusses how getting the correct diagnosis for your vertigo is vital for treating it correctly, and how the practice has been treating this debilitating condition for years. and treated as vestibular vertigo. One of the features of cervical vertigo is that is does not respond to drugs used to treat inner ear vertigo, so if your vertigo hasn’t cleared up with medication, it is definitely time to consider if it could be stemming from your neck.

Vertigo has devastating effects At Apex Headache Clinic, Belfast we have over 25 years of extensive experience in treating vertigo or dizziness. Approximately 20% of all patients we see suffer with this common health complaint, which has devastating symptoms such as poor balance, especially when walking, light headedness or a sense of ‘being removed’ from the world. In the most severe cases sufferers are confined to their homes and it can ruin their lives. Getting the right diagnosis is vital Clearing your vertigo begins with getting the

right diagnosis. What is commonly unknown is that there are in fact two main causes of vertigo: vertigo stemming from an imbalance in the inner ear, called vestibular vertigo, and vertigo originating from the upper neck region of the spine, called cervical vertigo. Cervical vertigo is often overlooked as a cause of vertigo, even though its occurrence is extremely common. It is usually the result of stiffness or damage of the upper neck joints of the spine but usually the individual experiences no actual neck pain, only dizziness. Cervical vertigo is often misdiagnosed

Clear your vertigo for good At Apex Headache Clinic, we have been successfully diagnosing and treating cervical vertigo for over 25 years. Furthermore, I have extensively trained our whole team of physiotherapists in my manual regimes of treatment that I use to clear it, called The Nelson Vertigo Approach™. This treatment is very successful in targeting cervical vertigo at its source and clearing it or significantly improving it in the vast majority of cases. Your initial consultation at Apex Headache Clinic will involve one of our experienced specialist physiotherapists assessing your neck to determine if it is the source of your vertigo. If the assessment confirms that your vertigo stems from your neck, a treatment plan will then follow. Our unique regime of manual physiotherapy treatment involves gentle and safe mobilisation techniques of the specific targeted segments of the upper neck region. Patients often start to feel relief within just a few sessions. Don’t let vertigo ruin the quality of your life. At Apex Headache Clinic, we have a high success rate in clearing this complaint, even in patients who have suffered for years. How Apex Headache Clinic cleared my migraines 26-year-old business owner and founder of Grá Matcha, Grace Fitzpatrick, from Belfast, had been suffering with migraines since she was a teenager which was having a massive impact on her life. After trying everything but with no relief, she visited Apex Headache Clinic to try to get to the source of her problem. Here, she shares how the clinic’s unique regime of specialist manual physiotherapy treatment for migraines and headaches, called The Nelson Headache Approach™, which isn’t available at any other clinic in the UK, cleared her migraines, meaning that she could finally start to enjoy life again. Grace, tell us when your migraines began? I started getting migraines when I was 13years-old. When I was a teenager, I would get migraines sporadically, usually around times of stress. In my early twenties I moved to Dubai to teach, and this was when my migraines really became much more severe. I started getting migraines more and more frequently until I was getting a migraine three times a week. I attended different doctors including seeing a consultant neurologist, but I couldn’t get any answers and all I could do was try to manage the pain with painkillers and sleep until it had passed. How did the pain affect your life? The migraines had a terrible impact on my everyday life. I was struggling to keep up in work, often having to leave early and I even had to move back home to Northern Ireland because of my migraines. I had migraines with aura and when they started, I would have to go home and rest. In the days after a migraine, I felt completely drained and I had to go to bed for days at a time. What led you to Apex Headache Clinic? I had seen a post about Apex Headache Clinic on Facebook and I always had it in the back of my mind. When a friend asked me if I had thought of giving it a try, I decided to book an appointment for an initial consultation. At that initial consultation I felt like my specialist physio was someone who understood, and didn’t just tell me ‘you’re stressed, you’re tired, drink more water or

take supplements’; it was a ‘let’s get to the bottom of the physical cause of your migraines’ approach. During that initial consultation I explained that I had been in a car accident while living in Dubai and it was established that this was very likely to be the cause of the worsening of my migraines which always stemmed from my neck. My specialist physiotherapist also gave me advice to follow alongside my course of physiotherapy treatment. How has Apex Headache Clinic changed your life? My migraines are almost gone completely! I only get the odd migraine around once every two months which has been amazing for me. I always thought that this was something I was going to have to live with and I even left a job that I loved due to the impact it was having on me. Now, since my migraines have virtually cleared I have been able to set up my own business and get back on track without having to worry about migraines. What advice would you offer someone suffering from migraines? I felt completely helpless when suffering with

my migraines and I couldn’t recommend Apex Headache Clinic enough. You don’t have to repeat yourself at every appointment, you just show up and they work their magic! To book an appointment at Apex Headache Clinic, call 028 9048 4153. No GP referral is necessary.

Our cover star and local businesswoman, Christine Mackin, discusses staying ahead of the game in the beauty industry and her journey to the top.

You are celebrating 20 years in business; how does it feel to reach that milestone? It’s honestly incredible! Reaching 20 years in business feels like a huge accomplishment, and it’s a testament to all the hard work, passion, and dedication that has gone into getting here. Having a loyal staff who are focused, dedicated, and want to improve continually has and remains an essential element to maintaining progress over this past 20 years and going forward into the future. When you first set up Radiance Beauty and Day Spa did you envisage what it has become today? Absolutely not. I am acutely aware how lucky I am to be in the position of looking forward to going to work every day. However, in the early days this did not seem remotely possible as I was starting from scratch.

UT Partnership

For the first few years I never went on holidays or took much time off from work as the demands were many and widespread, requiring my full attention including working outside of salon opening hours. A little less than 10 years ago, following several successful years of growth, Radiance progressed to the stage where a major refurbishment of developing two buildings into one modern larger unit was necessary. This is where we are now permanently based on the Lisburn Road, Belfast with a current employee head count of 28 staff. How do you plan to celebrate your 20th year? Celebrating 20 years in business definitely calls for something special so I intend to take a holiday with my family later in the year, but prior to that I am introducing some new aesthetics machines and treatments at Radiance. Amongst these is the world’s most advanced fat loss laser ‘Emerald’ that we launched at Christmas and also the Exilis Ultra 360 for tighter firmer smoother skin. Innovation and continuous progression are essential to maintaining a leading presence in this industry.

What inspired you to set up this business 20 years ago; did you always see yourself as a business owner? When I was studying and working within the beauty industry in the 1990s in the USA I became interested in eventually owing my own business, and after returning to Ireland I made the decision to open my own salon here in Belfast while also working as a lecturer in local third-level colleges. Running a business can be tough; what challenges have you had to overcome to make it the success it now is? Every day is a school day, and in this industry, which is consistently evolving, there are always new trends, treatments and machines becoming available, ready to take centre stage. Continuing to have an appetite for exploration in new additions to current offerings is paramount to providing the best for one’s clients while also remaining relevant. To meet this end structured CPD programmes are in place for all staff to stay abreast of changes. Other challenges I have faced range from the difficult period of enforced Covid shutdowns to a wide range of regulatory standards and requirements that the beauty industry rightly has to meet. You have achieved so much, including many awards and accolades, do you have a particular highlight? Ulster Tatler Day Spa of the Year 2018 NI Excellence in Beauty Day Spa of the Year 2022 Families First People Choice Awards in three categories: Salon of the Year 2022 Mighty Women Awards 2022 Excellence in Customer Care And Service Gold Star Award for Innovation and Outstanding Work for Women 2022 and Finalist in The Best Employer 2022 Ulster Tatler Businesswoman of the Year 2022 Ulster Tatler Salon of the Year 2022 Northern Ireland Excellence Awards in Beauty Salon of the Year 2023 Northern Ireland Excellence Awards in Beauty Skin Care of the Year 2023 Northern Ireland Excellence Awards in Beauty Business of the Year 2023 Ulster Tatler Influential Woman of the Year for Outstanding Contribution to Beauty Award 2023 Northern Ireland Excellence Awards Lifetime Achievement Award 2024 These credentials and achievements have placed me in a position to return the gesture and share my experience by sponsoring other like minded Northern Ireland business women, all pioneers in their fields, helping them to achieve the deserved recognition and bask in the accolades this award bestows upon them.

Prestigious awards are a badge of honour and place businesses on an acclaimed platform from which to pivot, catapulting their business to greater heights. I have recently learned that I will sit on another highly acclaimed judging panel. So watch this space …. What do you love most about your job? I love meeting people and trying to make a genuine difference, whether it is solving problems and sharing ideas and solutions. The constant challenge of learning and improving keeps things exciting. I cherish the opportunity to engage with diverse individuals with diverse needs. There’s a certain magic in being able to help someone find the information they need, offer a fresh perspective, or even just brighten their day with a bit of humour. Each interaction is a unique adventure where I find immense satisfaction assisting clients with advice and remedies for issues that they have. Who has been your biggest inspiration in business? My Radiance team! I believe that the key to success is having a concentrated focus on staff wellbeing, developing all my employees to become the best they possibly can be and therefore achieving their own particular goals in life. I lead by example and my mantra which resonates with all my girls is:- “work with dedication, , deliver with conviction and view every obstacle as an undiscovered path of enlightenment” . There are many cogs in the machine that is Radiance and I understand that it’s not a “one size fits all” when it comes to therapists’ skill sets. They are all unique. Each therapists brings something different to the table. That is what makes our clinic & salon so versatile. Looking back, is there anything you would have done differently? No, not really, I don’t have regrets on decisions made to date. Mistakes have been made, of which there are many, but one must learn from them. Errors and wrong decisions made in the past contributed to moulding me into the person I am today.

ABOUT EXILIS ULTRA 360™ The EXILIS ULTRA 360™ is an award-winning system which combines radio-frequency with ultrasound energy in a non-invasive process to tone and reshape the targeted areas. It is ideal for clients who are looking for tighter, firmer skin; offering a clinically proven means of body sculpting, skin tightening and vaginal rejuvenation.

HOW IT WORKS:

EXILIS ULTRA™ simultaneously delivers radiofrequency and ultrasound energy to the targeted area. This works to heat up the fatty layer of cells where cellulite or excessive fatty deposits can build up. Fat cells are broken down, then released into the spaces between cells, where they die. Once destroyed, these cells are simply expelled by the body’s metabolic processes. In addition to breaking down fatty deposits, the treatment also works to tighten, tone and even lift the skin. This is due to the radiofrequency energy which stimulates fibroblasts in the skin’s deepest layers (dermis and epidermis). As new elastin fibres and collagen develop, the skin becomes smoother and tighter.

RESULTS OF EXILIS TREATMENT:

Potential results of this treatment include: tighter, firmer, smoother skin, lifted and contoured body shape, reduction in cellulite and stubborn fat. BENEFITS OF EXILIS ULTRA 360™ Non-invasive treatment, clinically proven results, no downtime, suitable for face or body, 360 technology for superior results. The only system which simultaneously delivers radiofrequency AND ultrasound.

AREAS TREATED:

Elixis Ultra 360™ can be used nearly everywhere that loose skin, cellulite or fatty deposits are an issue.

ABOUT EMERALD LASER

Designed by a team of scientists and doctors, the Emerald Laser is the newest state-of-theart technology for fat removal. The device can remove fat from any part of your body, providing outstanding results in convenient, pain-free sessions. Emerald is the only laser cleared by the FDA for fat reduction - a status attributed to the most effective and safest technologies.

KEY FEATURES INCLUDE: • The most effective and healthiest fat removal device on the market. • Average circumference loss of 6 inches in 4 weeks. • Painless, with no side effects or downtime. • Convenient 30 minute sessions. • 100% no-contact treatment. • Medically certified & cleared by the FDA.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Emerald uses 10 x 532nm true green laser beams (monochromatic, collimated, and coherent) to create small transitory pores for the fatty liquids in fat cells to seep out. The fatty liquids are then naturally flushed out through your lymphatic system.

W A Y

The result is that the fat cells shrink instead of being killed. When this happens, the shrunken fat cells begin to act and function like healthy lean cells, releasing the correct messages to the brain and creating a communication effect throughout the fat organ, causing other fat cells to release their content and return their hormone responses to the positive.

T O

L O S E F A T

WHAT AREAS CAN BE TREATED?

The Emerald Laser can be used to treat multiple areas of the body. Please examine the image below for the possible treatment options.

IS IT SAFE?

Very safe. Emerald has been rigorously tested and is US FDA-approved - One of the hardest certificates to obtain in the scientific industry.

AMAZING RESULTS

‘’Emerald is proven to be enormously effective technology and it doesn’t use excessive heat or cooling, preserving the endocrine function of the fat cell - which is truly unique. It can produce noticeable results in a short space of time and is the only technology to be given US FDA market clearance for overall body circumference reduction to patients up to 40 BMI.’’ Dr Munir Somji, DrMedispa, London

This month’s cover for the Ulster Tatler featuring Christine Mackin of Radiance Beauty & Day Spa is the 15th cover shoot by Paul Jervis Photography. Paul said, “Christine is always a lot of fun and is really game for anything, and this was definitely the case at the shoot in Amelia Hall where she ended up on a step ladder in the middle of the road outside the bar. This is my second cover shoot for Christine, with the last one being back in June 2022 for the July edition. It was great working with Christine again and a pleasure to be part of Radiance Beauty and Day Spa’s 20th celebrations. It has been a real privilege having the opportunity to photograph these 15 covers and bring my relaxed style with an emphasis on delivering images that reflect the brand and are engaging in a way that captures the attention of those who view them.” Across the 15 covers there have been a broad range of products and owners to capture, all with their unique challenges. When asked if there was a favourite Paul responded, “It is really hard to pick one, but the first with Katharine Walker for Algram will, of course, always be special and I can still remember how nervous I was but Kat was so easy to work with, which made a big difference. The best bit of doing the shoots has been the people I get to work with, and I hope to get to capture many more covers in the future.” Paul Jervis Photography not only shoots covers for the Ulster Tatler but also other commercial work such as formals, events and content. INTERVIEW

T

here is a kind of Pavlovian response to meeting one of our foremost comedians, Tim McGarry. You smile, rehearse a little laugh, anticipating humour. “That is nice, the young 60-year-old admits. “People expect me to be funny and are bitterly disappointed when I’m not funny! But the number of times a day people shout ‘Da, what about ye?’ Coming to the Europa, a van stopped and three guys shouted ‘give my head some peace’. It’s still held in such affection.” They were referring, of course, to his character, the ultimate da, in Give my Head Peace, now about to go on a live tour of Northern Ireland. “It’s like a school reunion,” admits McGarry, adding that they crack a bottle of wine or two on the back of the bus – “We have a tour bus and a driver.” – and that his stage wife Olivia Nash’s anecdotes from the Seventies and Eighties (“even the Sixties”) are quite something. It is apparently easy, however, for Marty Reid, aka Uncle Andy, to remain under the public radar. “Uncle Andy doesn’t have dark hair and sideburns any more and when people ask where he is and I point to one side, they say ‘what?’” They can’t suspend their disbelief, we agree in the Europa piano bar while sipping flat whites. But McGarry doesn’t mind being recognised. “No, 99 per cent of it is nice. People in Northern Ireland aren’t afraid to tell you if they don’t like something. I do my best, although if twenty people want selfies and you’re out it can be tedious. But these people are paying my bills and are fans. And I genuinely like the human race.” You have to wonder whether it’s a strain, being droll all the time, and whether Tim McGarry even wants to spend the day being grumpy or just serious. “I don’t want a day off although I enjoy watching Cliftonville Football Club and drinking a glass of wine and reading. I have eight books by my bed, one of which is about Republican women. My great aunt, Cassie O’Hara, was a staunch member of the old IRA, the black sheep of the O’Hara family and she was even interned in the war in Armagh.” He adds: “I also have a book about grammar, For Whom the Bell Tolls. My father was a bit of a grammar Nazi and used to shout at the newscasters on TV who said ‘less’ rather than ‘fewer’ people. I have inherited that.” He’s also inherited his father’s dry sense of humour and was brought up in a pretty humorous household. “My father was a big fan of Tommy Cooper and Victor Borge and used to let me watch Dave Allen. My mother wasn’t so happy

about that as she was very religious and didn’t like Dave’s attitude to the Church.” One of McGarry senior’s best bons mots was ‘happy is the man whose cigarette lighter and wife are still working’. Recently, having turned sixty and thinking about mortality – Tim’s father died at 68 – McGarry toured a stand-up devoted to his dad, titled Ridiculous. He included stuff about family – “some of it made up, it’s not all true” – but this tribute indicated where McGarry junior gets his gift. “Somebody showed me a tape recently of my dad doing fifteen minutes of jokes at the Mater. I won’t repeat them to the 2025 Ulster Tatler as I don’t want to get cancelled, but they weren’t that politically correct. But his timing was impeccable, his sense of humour great and it made me realise where I got it from.” In terms of what made the young McGarry laugh, it’s classic fare. “I was of the era of Monty Python, the Young Ones and the sketch show Not the Nine O’Clock News. I remember killing myself laughing at Fawlty Towers and my favourite episode is the one where the psychiatrists arrive.” He segues into Basil Fawlty getting flustered by them. “He does all sorts of mad things. They’re talking about holidays and he thinks they’re talking about sex. He goes well, it’s normal, once or twice a year, no, a week…” Laughter hits the tape. At school, there was predictably schoolboy humour. “There were a lot of messers at St Malachy’s, people who were funnier than I was, but I’d repeat Python sketches. I didn’t take humour seriously until I went to university.” Then he started the brilliant career, writing jokes with

INTERVIEW

Michael McDowell and Damon Quinn, and taking the mickey out of the law, among other things. “We were all law students.” He adds it is interesting that Frank Carson’s generation went to England to ply their comic trade, and that his generation was the first making humorous material out of home, Northern Ireland. “We wrote this sketch, Two Ceasefires and a Funeral, that became Give my Head Peace. I am proud to say I thought of the Give my Head Peace name.” At one point, we deconstruct how gags work, talking about McGarry’s The Blame Game, although there is a health warning. “It’s the least funny thing to discuss how comedy works. Gags work by setting up a situation, then undermining it, by heading off in a completely different direction or surprising you. A guy called Gary Delaney, known for his one liners, is good on that.” Ironically, McGarry has benefited from people being backward-looking when it comes to Give my Head Peace, as he admits. “There’s a gag I do in stand-up which goes ‘Sectarianism is a blight which has held us back, we’re proud of the fact we satirise sectarianism. Violence is wrong is our point and sectarianism is very stupid, without being too didactic and saying ‘Don’t fight and just be nice to each other’. We were accused of reinforcing sectarianism at the start but I don’t think that’s true, we showed characters like Uncle Andy as ridiculous.” But, as McGarry points out, it wasn’t a formulaic exercise. “We didn’t say we’ve done three jokes about Sinn Fein, we must write three jokes about the Loyalists. We just wrote what made us laugh.” Tim McGarry is a humanist and patron of the Humanist Society. “It means they get a free fundraising gig off me.” He admits he sometimes feels guilty and that he’s betrayed his mother but remains an avowed atheist. Another passion is integrated education, although he enjoyed attending St Malachy’s. “We separate children at four, they don’t see each other until their teens and we wonder why they don’t get on.” When it comes to audience reaction and the stand-up’s bugbear, hecklers, McGarry isn’t terribly humanist, saying: “I’m a pacifist but would like kneecapping for hecklers. This one drunk interrupted me in a gig and it ruined the momentum. Then you had to put him down and it was a pain.” Happily, there are no hecklers for the sharp-as-anything television show McGarry hosts, The Blame Game. They get big names, the cream of local comic talent and tackle topical issues with naughty fervour, like a gag-driven Have I Got News For You. “We’ve only done four for the new series but are hoping they’ll come back from more.” The BBC definitely should. Another returning project is The Long and the Short of It, McGarry’s survey of Ulster Scots history and influence with historian Dr David Hume. Having discovered he has a smidgeon of UlsterScots ancestry (a forebear had an affair with an Ulster Scots guy), McGarry enjoys working on this. We bat about the legitimacy of Ulster Scots as a language and then the tall, funny man does hugs and disappears to do photos outside the Grand Opera House, no doubt getting some shouted greetings along the way.

BOOK REVIEW BY DR PAUL HARRON

Thoroughly Modern This month, Dr Paul Harron reviews Ulster Modern – Modern Movement Architecture in Northern Ireland, 1921-1949 by Dr Paul Larmour.

What gives a place its unique character? Its people, certainly; its food, probably; its buildings – surely they play a huge part in the distinctiveness of any region. I am fascinated by buildings and why they look the way they do. Dr Paul Larmour has been pre-eminent in describing the architectural history of Ulster, from his books on the buildings of Belfast and one on its grand Edwardian City Hall, to the striking churches of Liam McCormick, particularly in Donegal, and I’d recommend them highly to all who share an interest in knowing more about and understanding our built heritage. Dr Larmour has also written on Modern Movement architecture in Ireland in Free State Architecture, published by Gandon Editions for its Edge Series of books focusing on ideas in art and architecture, and now we have a superb companion to that book in the same Gandon series, Ulster Modern, featuring buildings from the 1920s through to the end of the 1940s. As the author says, the Modern Movement captured the spirit and energy of the first half of the twentieth century – there was a shedding of past historical styles and ornament and architects sought to create a different image for buildings which reflected new structural techniques of reinforced concrete and steel frames. It was a revolution in architectural design and aesthetics that took a number of different forms – probably the most familiar type (and term) is that of Art Deco. While Northern Ireland’s Modernist architecture has been heretofore rather neglected by writers and publishers, in fact there is a very fine array of Art Deco buildings in particular here, and in Belfast especially. Think, for example, of the old Bank of Ireland on Royal Avenue (soon to be the anchor of the ‘Belfast Stories’ visitor attraction) and the old Sinclair’s Store diagonally opposite it; think, too, of the former King’s Hall at Balmoral and the once beloved Floral Hall at Bellevue, Cave Hill – now within Belfast Zoo – which graces the cover of the book. These are all featured here,

Bank of Ireland Building, Royal Avenue.

described clearly and nicely contextualised, and accompanied by fascinating archival photographs and drawings. There are also very notable schools and cinemas from the period to consider. On the schools side, Reginald S Wilshere’s name is dominant, from his striking former McQuiston School on Donegall Pass (later known to many as the Belfast School of Music) to the charming Botanic PS and Avoniel PS, amongst others. The heyday of cinemas produced a terrific crop of buildings, especially those designed by John McBride Neill; some of these are now gone but rather magnificently Windsor Baptist Church has brought the former Majestic on the Lisburn Road back to life as its twentyfirst century home. The book also includes many houses, from individual commissions to housing estates such as Cregagh, Whitewell, Mount Vernon and Merville Garden Village. This book is well worth delving into, to discover more about the architectural influencers of the past, and it is a treat to read and pore over its images.

ARTS DIARY

“The collection is very notable for its restricted brief of each artist using one-colour ink on one-colour paper stock; the result is that when viewed together, the collection presents a visually arresting body of work.”

Five Launch at Late Cafe When I moved to east Belfast, top of my list was to find was a local coffee shop for my regular caffeine fix. When I stumbled across Late, on Orangefield Lane, I quickly realised I had found a gem. As well as offering hand-poured coffees and crafted bakes, the bright, airy contemporary concept space also doubles as an exhibition gallery for local artists. The cafe is the brain child of coffee connoisseur Ben Hamilton,, who was cofounder of speciality donut hot-spot Guilt Trip. When Ben left Guilt Trip, he set out on his own roasting journey, under the name Process. Quickly becoming one of the most recognised speciality coffee roasters in the industry, Process gave Ben the concept to come up with something totally different: Late. And in a full circle moment, the cafe/art gallery opened in the exact same spot Guilt Trip once occupied. Part of Late’s unique appeal is that it hosts regular arts exhibitions and speciality coffee tasting opportunities, such as Five. This exciting exhibit featured five artists who each created their own limited-edition print. The opening night was buzzing as people popped along for a coffee and the chance to get their first peek at the artworks. The artists on display were Herald Black, Kirsty Dunlop, Timothy Farrell, Neil Gillespie, and Alana McDowell. The collection is very notable for its restricted brief of each artist using one-colour ink on one-colour paper stock; the result is that when viewed together, the collection presents a visually arresting body of work. Each 175gsm print was limited to an edition of 30, and were signed and numbered by the individual artists. At the opening night, I had the opportunity to talk to Ben who explained that what made this exhibition even more special was that in creating screen prints, several of the artists were experimenting with a medium that was new to them. And they absolutely nailed it. A bold and innovative exhibition, Five was a fantastic way to get acquainted with Late. I can’t wait to see what new events Ben and the team have lined up for 2025. The launch of Five took place on 12 December 2024.

E M I LY I N B E L FA S T EDITED BY EMILY HANNA, VAVA INFLUENCE

It’s a Date!

Hello and welcome to ‘Emily in Belfast’! As Belfast’s self-professed biggest fan, I’ll be delving into the coolest corners of the city, leaving no stone unturned and sharing all of my findings with you. My first month’s entry is inspired by a boy who recently asked me on a date. His idea of a date? A trip to the gym. No thank you. I think living in such a vibrant city, we can do a whole lot better than that. While Belfast boys are notoriously big fans of mini golf, you won’t catch me on the green over at City Side, so here are my triedand-tested date night spots that give you something a little different along with a lot of Belfast charm. Whether you’re celebrating Valentines, Galentines or just in need of some inspiration to add a bit of variety to your nights, these are not to be missed.

1. Town Square First up, Town Square. Somewhere that knows exactly what a girl wants. The s’mores sharing board is the perfect favourite winter date night. All the best parts of camping, without having to go outside. Never too loud or crowded, it’s the ideal cosy atmosphere. Pair your s’mores with some of their speciality cocktails for the perfect date night.

2. Haymarket Next up, there’s nowhere that makes me feel like I’m in a big city as much as Haymarket. Its new expansion offers so many cool additions to explore. Concept bars, interactive games – a welcome change from the same old bars I’ve been frequenting for the last few years. (Oh, and bonus points if you’re dating a man in finance because they have their very own stock exchange bar). Be sure to check out their pink party bathroom and dance the night away – dancing is the only acceptable form of exercise on a date...seriously, the gym?

3. Feast and Film Lastly, this one may take some preplanning, but I have to recommend booking in for a ‘Feast and Film’. It’s the ultimate, elevated cinema experience to share with a fellow foodie. A culinary adventure where talented, local chefs team up to bring the flavours of the film to life. Good food, good film, and great company – what more could you want? That’s all from me this month. I can’t wait to share more of my favourite parts of the city with you.

LOVE & R E L AT I O N S H I P S Therapist and Coach

EDITED BY GAVIN MURPHY

Hearts and Minds: The Science Of Love and Relationships This month, therapist and coach, Gavin Murphy, highlights fun, creative ideas for couples this Valentine’s Day. Valentine’s Day, a celebration of love, romance, and for many, a dash of stress as we navigate grand gestures, heartfelt moments, and societal expectations. But beyond the heart-shaped chocolates and rose petals lies an intriguing truth: love isn’t just about feelings; it’s also about brain chemistry, thoughtful connection, and a bit of effort!

husband said he’d never forget.

2. Small efforts matter: Respond to bids for

For the Couples Modern life often leaves couples juggling work, kids, and commitments, making connection a challenge. Use Valentine’s Day to focus on the “little big things”:

connection and nurture intimacy daily. 3. Shared experiences strengthen bonds: Activities that break the routine create lasting memories. 4. Express gratitude: Simple words of appreciation go a long way!

The Science of Love: Love has a chemical side, driven by dopamine (the reward hormone), oxytocin (the bonding hormone), and serotonin (the mood regulator). Valentine’s Day is a perfect opportunity to spark those feel-good chemicals, but it’s not always about big, flashy gestures. Small, thoughtful actions often have a bigger impact on building connection and intimacy. For example, psychologist Dr. John Gottman emphasizes the importance of “bids for connection”, the tiny moments when partners seek attention, affirmation, or affection. Responding to these bids (even with a simple “That’s interesting!” when your partner shares a thought) is what strengthens relationships over time. Top Tips! Forget clichéd chocolates and flowers (unless your partner genuinely loves them!). Instead, tailor your gestures to their personality and interests. If they love nature, plan a surprise walk in a scenic spot like Castle Ward or Tollymore Forest, followed by a cosy picnic. If they’re into wellness, gift them a yoga class or arrange a spa night at home. Case in point: Alanna wanted to impress her partner, a bookworm, but struggled with ideas. Instead of a generic gift, she created a “literary love hunt”, hiding notes in her favourite books with clues leading to a dinner reservation at a romantic restaurant. Her thoughtful effort won the day. Valentine’s Day is also a chance to show appreciation. Instead of a generic card, write a letter that highlights your partner’s best qualities or thank them for something specific they do. For the action-oriented, a fun experience like a brewery tour or go-karting adventure can also spark joy. Case in point: Laura, married to an amateur chef, booked a cooking masterclass for two. They spent the evening laughing, learning, and cooking up their Valentine’s dinner together, an experience her

• Share three things you appreciate about each other. • Plan a “tech-free” evening, rediscovering conversation over dinner. • Revisit where you first met or had your first date, nostalgia is a powerful bonding tool. Case in point: Mark and Niamh, married 15 years, felt stuck in a routine. On Valentine’s Day, they booked a pottery class inspired by The Great Pottery Throw Down. It was messy, fun, and a spark for new memories! Key Takeaways: 1. Personalisation is key: Generic gifts are nice; tailored gestures are unforgettable. 84

So, this Valentine’s Day, skip the pressure of grand gestures. Instead, focus on the little things that create genuine connection. Whether you’re single, partnered, or “it’s complicated”, a thoughtful approach can turn February 14th into a celebration of love that lasts far beyond the day itself! In addition to tourists from across Ireland, visitors included local members, supporters of the vibrant events calendar, and day visitors exploring the stunning castle, picturesque gardens, and the rich rural heritage of the Irish Agricultural Museum. With its rich 800-year history, Johnstown Castle continues to reveal its fascinating stories under the stewardship of the Irish Heritage Trust, an independent non-profit organisation. Since opening in 2019, ongoing conservation projects and visitor experience enhancements have continued - all made possible through visitor and membership support, grants and philanthropy. Launched in 1990, the Awards recognise Ireland’s hospitality ambassadors – the people and businesses throughout the country who put Irish tourism on the global stage through the warmth of welcome and quality of service provided to our international visitors. Chairman of CIÉ Tours, Aidan Murphy said; “That we can offer a unique experience unrivalled by any other country is due in no small part to our many partners who work closely with us, taking the feedback from our visitors and continuously refining their offering. Our honorees are exemplary contributors to our 95.4% guest satisfaction rate, and they all deserve recognition for the excellent roles they play in welcoming visitors to Ireland and ensuring they have a memorable experience."

Johnstown Castle Estate, Museum and Gardens, Wexford has received an award at the 33rd Annual CIE Tours Awards of Excellence. The awards, which are based on feedback received from customers of CIE Tours International throughout the year, were presented at a ceremony recently held at Christchurch Cathedral, Dublin. We are especially proud to accept this award on behalf of all of the hard-working team at the Irish Heritage Trust and at Johnstown Castle, who go to every length to ensure our visitors have the best experience possible every day and the fact that this award is won on the back of our visitor’s endorsement, it is a real testament to the hard work of all our team. THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE EIKON EXHIBITION CENTRE

Situated just off Sprucefield roundabout, the Eikon Exhibition Centre stands as Northern Ireland’s largest events venue. Since opening in 2015, the Eikon Exhibition Centre has been at the forefront of providing exceptional facilities and services that cater to a diverse range of events, from large-scale consumer and trade shows to exhibitions, conferences and corporate gatherings. To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Eikon Exhibition Centre, Ulster Tatler caught up with David Browne, Operations Manager and Shona Ayre, Sales and Development Executive. How long have you been working at the Eikon Exhibition Centre? David: I began my career with the Royal Ulster Agricultural Society over 35 years ago at the iconic King’s Hall in Belfast. In 2013, the Society made a significant move by relocating from the King’s Hall to Lisburn, later opening the Eikon Exhibition Centre in 2015. Since then, I’ve been part of the team here at the Eikon Exhibition Centre, witnessing firsthand the growth and development of the Venue. Shona: As Sales and Business Development Executive, my role consists of attracting new business to the Venue, as well as managing the accounts of our existing clients and liaising alongside our operations team and external contractors. My days will vary depending on the tasks at hand – I can be at my desk most of the day as I catch up on operations sheets, client queries and planning, scheduling, and speaking to exciting new event prospects. Other days, I can be in the Venue itself for long periods of time conducting site visits

for both existing and new events, as well as meetings with our appointed contractors. Growing sales of the Venue and managing the portfolio of existing events at the Venue is my focus, as a result, I spend a lot of time researching industry trends and specific sector audience profiles. Each event organiser will have different requirements, and it is so important to take the time to get to know each event and organiser. Can you tell us a bit about your role and what a typical day looks like for you? Shona: As Sales and Business Development Executive, my role consists of attracting new business to the Venue, as well as managing the accounts of our existing clients and liaising alongside our operations team and external contractors. My days will vary depending on the tasks at hand – I can be at my desk most of the day as I catch up on operations sheets, client queries and planning, scheduling, and speaking to exciting new event prospects. Each event organiser will have different requirements, and it is so important to take the time to get to know each event and organiser. David: As Operations Manager, my role is incredibly varied and covers much more than just the day-to-day operations of the Eikon Exhibition Centre. I oversee the operations of the entire 55-acre site, which includes the Eikon Hall, the Logan Hall, an exceptional grade 1 international standard grass showjumping arena, agricultural events structure, stables, grassed areas, as well as several office and storage buildings. My day typically starts with a team meeting, where I connect with my multiskilled team of operatives. Together, we review the tasks for the day as well as upcoming priorities, making sure we’re

all on the same page and prepared to handle whatever comes our way. Once we’ve mapped out the day’s priorities, I then focus on other tasks which include meeting with event organisers, liaising with contractors, assessing ongoing projects, site visits, and managing any operational issues that may arise. Of course, there’s always the paperwork to catch up on, from scheduling to planning and budgeting, ensuring everything stays organised and efficient. What do you love most about your job? David: What I love most about my job is the sheer variety and unpredictability it offers. The Eikon Exhibition Centre attracts a wide range of events, each bringing its own unique perspective on how the facilities can be utilised, often requiring bespoke setups and creative solutions. One of the most fulfilling aspects of my job is the opportunity to work directly with event organisers. The relationships we build with organisers are incredibly rewarding. It’s amazing to be part of the process that turns their dreams into reality, knowing that our efforts play a key role in the success of their event. Another aspect I truly enjoy is working with a focused and driven team to maintain the Venue in pristine condition. It’s incredibly satisfying to know that we all share a commitment to excellence, and the collective effort we put into making sure everything runs smoothly makes a huge difference. The diversity of tasks, the teamwork, and the satisfaction of seeing an event come to life make this job truly enjoyable. Shona: The Eikon is very proud to host events from across numerous different sectors. I particularly love speaking with the organisers and learning more about their industries and respective sectors, as well as their audience and exhibitor profiles. In one meeting, we could be discussing the manufacturing industry for a trade event, to looking

at pop culture trends and sci-fi series productions for a consumer event in the next! It is a privilege to be engaged with such a variation of industries, working alongside each organiser and being an integral part of delivering the organisers requirements. We work with a variety of organisers, some of whom have been with us since our King’s Hall days such as Dubshed, Spring Farm Machinery Show, UCAS and Belfast Championship Dog Show. It is wonderful to work with the teams who deliver such prestigious and established events. What makes the Eikon Exhibition Centre unique? Shona: The Eikon Exhibition Centre is Northern Ireland’s largest events venue which of course makes it stand out from others. However, I do think it is the adaptability of the site that creates its uniqueness – with the additional outdoor land on the 55-acre site, there is so much room for event growth, to increase on customer experience and to look at additional elements for events such as outdoor product demonstrations. The Venue can host events from 3,000sqm up to 10,600sqm indoors, in addition it can be divided into specific areas depending on the organiser’s requirements. The Venue is perfect operationally for exhibitions that require significant infrastructure. We have invested heavily in state-of-the art facilities, including an electric busbar system, several Wi-Fi networks all designed for specific uses throughout the Venue, Changing Places facility, and plumbed water throughout the Venue. Something as simple as over 13 vehicle roller doors allow for ease during build and breakdown and help decrease a few headaches for both the organisers and exhibitors alike! What challenges do you face and how do you overcome them? David: Each event presents its own set of unique demands, from last-minute changes to unforeseen issues that arise on the day. However, I have a moto that I apply in these situations: there is no

such thing as a problem, only a solution. I view every challenge as a puzzle, and my focus is always on finding the right solution to fit the situation. To overcome these challenges, I rely on clear and open communication with the event organisers. By understanding their needs and expectations in detail, we can anticipate potential issues before they arise. Additionally, excellent teamwork is key. In essence, facing challenges is part of the job, and it’s something we thrive on—it’s what we do! What can we expect to see happening in 2025 and what are you most looking forward to? Shona: 2025 is shaping up to be an exciting year at the Eikon Exhibition Centre, with a number of new events from a wide range of sectors such as Love Your Home & Love Your Food, BEPEX, Knit & Stitch and many more set to be announced throughout the year. I very much look forward to working with all of the clients on delivering their events at the Eikon and planning how the Venue can assist in the ease of operations required for events of such a scale. In addition, existing events continue to develop year-on year, adding various different elements to their shows, generating increased footfall as a result of their hard work. What event would you love to see take place at the Eikon Exhibition Centre; what do you think it is perfect for? Shona: There are some sectors still under-represented in the events industry in Northern Ireland, I would absolutely love to see sporting events at the Venue in addition to more consumer shows in Northern Ireland. With 4,000 free car parking spaces and easy access just off the Sprucefield roundabout, our location is highly accessible, placing us within a 30-minute drive of 4 million people, on the main arterial route between Dublin and Belfast. This makes us the ideal Venue for a diverse variety of events, attracting visitors from across the island of Ireland.

For nearly 40 years, GreenThumb has been at the forefront of lawn care innovation, spending decades perfecting the art of lawn maintenance, helping homeowners create lush, green spaces that become the pride of their gardens. As specialists in this field, we understand that a beautiful lawn isn’t just about aesthetics – it’s about health, longevity, and the proper care that it takes to nurture a vibrant outdoor space. While we’re best known for our seed and feed services, we also offer a comprehensive range of treatments designed to enhance your lawn’s overall appearance and health. From controlling weeds to aerating and scarifying and dealing with pests to rejuvenate tired grass - we have the knowledge and expertise to transform your lawn. A well-maintained lawn requires year-round attention and GreenThumb offers services tailored to each season’s unique needs. Whether it’s preventing damage from pests like Leatherjackets and Chafer Grubs, or dealing with drought, we have the right treatments to keep your lawn in tip-top shape. For instance, if your lawn is struggling with moss or thatch, which is caused by a buildup of dead organic matter like grass cuttings, our scarification treatment can offer the ideal solution. Scarifying works by removing this unwanted layer, allowing your lawn to breathe, while promoting healthier growth. Combine this with aeration, which involves creating small holes in the soil to improve the flow of air, water and nutrients, and you’re laying the groundwork for stronger, more resilient grass. For lawns with bare patches, our overseeding and top-dressing services come to the rescue. Using our exclusive Diamond Green grass seed mix, we ensure that your lawn is populated with hardier, more resilient grass varieties that thrive in the UK’s often unpredictable weather. This service not only covers bare spots, but it also improves the overall uniformity and health of your lawn.

Introducing GreenThumb’s Six-Part Lawn Refresh: A Long-Term Solution for Lawn Health Our six-part Lawn Refresh is the ultimate solution to ensure your lawn remains vibrant and healthy throughout the year. 1. Deep Scarification: We remove moss and thatch, giving your lawn access to the air and sunlight it needs to thrive. 2. Lawn Aeration: Small holes are created in the soil to improve the flow of water, air, and nutrients to the roots, combating compaction. 3. Overseeding: Using our exclusive Diamond Green Grass Seed, we enhance your lawn with more resilient, high-performance grass varieties. 4. Fertiliser Application: A nutrient-rich feed supports seed growth, helping your lawn establish itself quickly and strongly. 5. Top Dressing: We apply 100% recycled organic compost to nourish the soil and promote healthy growth. 6. Oasis Treatment: This bio-stimulant, enriched with seaweed extract, helps retain moisture and creates ideal conditions for seed germination.

TRANSFORM YOUR LAWN TODAY: If you’re looking for a dramatic change, the Lawn Refresh service provides a comprehensive solution, typically completed in just one day, depending on the size of your lawn. This service addresses every aspect of your lawn’s health and appearance, from scarification to fertilisation to the application of our Oasis treatment, designed to support seed germination and establish a thriving lawn. When booked before February 14th, 2025, you can also enjoy £50 to spend on LawnLove Rewards GreenThumb’s exclusive loyalty platform. As the team concentrate solely on residential projects, it enables them to hone their techniques and continue to cultivate the technical fine points to produce more beautiful, practical and resilient homes. They aim to constantly improve the detailing and customer service, to produce more reliable, tailored and beautiful homes in which clients love to live. Their ethos as a practice is to make houses the best they can be and happy to be living in them. It is not just about the design and a set of detailed drawings, but the opportunity to be able to make a real difference to people’s lives and help fulfil their dreams. Clients in the position to build their own home have likely worked hard for that

opportunity and want to be able to trust their architect to advise, guide and listen to them; Des Ewing Architects provides such a service. They say, “We strive for perfection in every project, no matter what size. We listen to our clients, talk with them and take the time to create the look and ambience they aspire to. It is about reading the client; not necessarily what they say about a proposal, but often what they don’t say – a look or a pause that tells you they are not convinced. At that stage it is about taking the time to tease out what it is that they do or don’t like. This takes time, experience, skill and dedication. This level of commitment to our client provides them with the comfort to know nothing is compromised.” Des Ewing Architects provides a full and dedicated service starting from outline proposals, design, planning permission, detailed design to site management and final completion of your project. This latest book from Ulster Architectural Heritage (UAH), Built to Last, profiles 25 bold and effective projects - completed and in progress - right across Northern Ireland where important and distinctive buildings which were once in a vulnerable state have been revived for present and future needs in exciting ways. The book is generously illustrated and also includes essays providing an overview of buildings at risk, the economic and societal value of built heritage and the potential for investment. The case studies cover a range of building types and record the history of the buildings, why they fell into disuse, the challenges faced, and the new uses found for them. Built to Last concludes by highlighting the ongoing mission to save good, usable buildings and identifies a few which are ripe for revival.

My not to sound like a cliché but, don’t sweat the small stuff. 7. What do you think is the best thing about living in Northern Ireland? The natural beauty we have on our doorstep and the accessibility of it all. You’re only two hours or less away from anywhere you want to visit. One minute I’m in the big city and then half an hour later I’m on the most beautiful, secluded beach. We’re very lucky to live here and sometimes need to stop being so hard on ourselves. 8. What is your mantra or favourite quote that you live by? I’m showing my nerdiness but as a great green man said, “Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.” It’s a quote from Star Wars’ Yoda, but I think it’s very applicable in our modern climate. There’s a lot of hate in the world and a lot of it is caused by fear of the unknown. This could be resolved if people took the time to study other cultures and points of view, if people spoke and debated more civilly with each other, presented their concerns and talked things out rather than shouting at each other from the get go when they disagree. Of course, there will always be people who will never change and are purely horrible people but I think most normal people have the ability to at least agree to disagree.

Conchúr Moore Founder of Document Belfast

1. What do you love most about your job? I actually have a full-time job alongside my Document Belfast page but it’s pretty normal so I’ll focus on my social media page and tours for this one. I love meeting people from around the world, learning about other cultures and showing off our amazing city of Belfast with its rich history. Social media and tour guiding has given me this opportunity and I love it. Before I did all of this my wife would be scundered at me stopping tourists all the time in town to give directions and chat, now I get to do it for a job! 2. What has been your career highlight to date? I think probably when I launched my Belfast Guinness History Tours, they were the first Guinness/history-based tours on the island that take people to my favourite spots for Guinness whilst learning about history on the way. It was a super-proud moment as I was worried nobody would book on, but loads did thankfully! 3. What are your favourite hobbies/ activities outside of work? I love to travel, that’s my biggest one, I couldn’t be a tour guide if I didn’t like to do this. Me and my wife try our best to visit places that aren’t the norm. When we visit a city we try to stray off the beaten track a little and hang out with the locals. Outside

of that I’m a history and film nerd, I also collect Simpsons memorabilia, and drinking paraphernalia, mainly old glasses etc. 4. What is your daily routine? On the weekdays it’s pretty boring, get up early, go to work etc. After work I spend a lot of time going to events, posting on my social media page, making videos, editing, answering emails and messages – it’s pretty much 24/7. Then we relax watching films and TV shows, mainly true crime. At the weekends I do my tours, but if not, we try to get up and go for a walk with the dog somewhere new. Then maybe go for a bite to eat and a few pints in town or the local. On Sundays we’ll go for a walk to shake off the cobwebs from the night before and of course have the obligatory hangover Chinese takeaway! 5. Do you have a specific fitness regime? Unfortunately not really, I walk a LOT on tours, with the dog and dandering about making videos. Other than that I love to swim and I flirt with the gym, I need to go more! 6. Do you have any tips for staying positive? Honestly, in today’s digital age, just don’t let strangers get you down. Your only concern should be what makes you, and the ones closest to you, happy. In the grand scheme of things, it’s a miracle we were even born in the first place, we’re only given one life so, 113

9. Who has been your biggest influence? My family, in particular my wife Tina. A lot of them have suffered pretty great hardships throughout their lives but have gotten through every obstacle and came out the other side even tougher and have turned adversity into amazing success, personally and professionally. I’m genuinely in awe and inspired by this. For me, my family and friends are always my biggest cheerleaders, supporting me in whatever crackpot endeavour I attempt and I couldn’t be more grateful.

10. FAVOURITE Movie: Taxi Driver Band/musician: Led Zeppelin (closely followed by Aretha Franklin) Book: To Kill a Mockingbird Restaurant: John’s of Bleecker Street NYC. In Belfast probably Edo or Coppi Holiday Destination: NYC, it’s like 20 destinations in one

Drink: Rum Meal: A proper Carbonara (no cream you heathens!)

Lifting the Cloud of Mental Illness Following his own personal experience of mental ill health and the recovery process, former businessman Alan McDowell is now dedicating his life to providing emotional and practical support to those in need. “Through our counselling and activities, we encourage everyone who comes to us to feel valued, to recognise their worth and to step into a fulfilling positive phase in their life.” Purpose-built Centre Portadown Wellness Centre comprises a purpose-built centre spanning 7,000 square feet, with diverse facilities which cater for various needs and interests, providing a safe haven for individuals and community groups alike. These include a professional counselling suite offering confidential sessions with accredited counsellors, along with a yoga suite, teaching kitchen, ceramics and pottery studio, woodwork suite, and arts and crafts suite – all providing therapies and activities that promote skill-building, mood enhancement and social connection.

Alan McDowell established Portadown Wellness Centre in 2019, setting up the mental health charity with his own personal savings. The centre is dedicated to providing support and empowerment for individuals in Portadown and the surrounding regions who are facing mental illness, addiction, recovery from physical illness, loneliness, or isolation. Alan’s own experiences help ensure that the centre focuses on care, compassion, empowerment and quality, and as centre manager he provides an operational outlook, drawing upon his background of over 40 years’ experience in the agricultural and horticultural sector. “Mental illness can affect anybody, regardless of religion, financial status or sexuality, and can be a distressing and frightening experience,” said Alan.

“Our model of combining emotional support with practical activities is proving very successful and effective. “We have a dedicated professional, therapeutic counselling team of qualified therapists on site and a strong selection of inspirational and therapeutic activities facilitated by highly skilled, qualified, caring and empathetic tutors.

help improve social inclusion and give them a reason to get up in the morning. Never one to rest on his laurels, Alan is currently in the process of setting up a new farm shop within the garden centre. Making a Difference Over 3,900 people were supported by Portadown Wellness Centre in 2023. In addition to supporting individuals, projects in the community have included a partnership with Armagh City, Banbridge & Craigavon Borough Council’s Good Relations team to help create and develop a beautiful garden space at the new Blossom Children’s Ward at Craigavon Area Hospital. This was designed and developed by participants of the centre’s horticulture programme. In June 2023, seven young men from Edgarstown and Corcraine (two socially disadvantaged areas of Portadown) learned woodwork skills under the tuition of William Megaw. The participants, who were struggling academically in school, had the opportunity to create seven wooden planters over 10 weeks which were subsequently donated to Daisy Lodge, the Cancer Fund for Children’s Newcastle retreat. The woodwork programme had a powerful impact on the participants and one of the young men ended up getting employment as a result. And There’s More The centre’s outreach team hold community wellbeing and educational seminars supporting members of the local community and employees of key businesses in the area. Volunteers also distribute free food to individuals, families, and schools within the community, with food donated by local businesses.

“Our small group classes generate connection and emotional support,”said Alan. “Through the art of creating or participating in an activity, people generally open and share their life experiences and challenges. “They often find that they are not alone and that there are shared experiences in the group. “This helps break down the stigma around mental health and participants are encouraged to foster new, caring, and supportive friendships.” An on-site garden centre creates muchneeded revenue while also providing facilities to give young people from impoverished backgrounds the opportunity to learn new skills in horticulture and business. It also provides the opportunity for people in the community experiencing loneliness and isolation to volunteer a few hours a week to 118

The Joy of Volunteering Wendy Smith, gardening volunteer at Abbeyfield Belfast Bell Rotary House tell us about her experience of volunteering.

“Volunteering at Abbeyfield Belfast’s Bell Rotary House has been an incredibly rewarding experience. My aim is to make the garden inviting for residents and their visitors. Some residents take their daily exercise outside, while others come out just to have a chat with me. One resident, who used to be an engineer, offers lots of practical ideas on how to support our giant sunflowers. Volunteering has allowed me to satisfy my love of gardening as well as engaging with older people. It’s so fulfilling, and a great opportunity for people who have some spare time to fill. Abbeyfield Belfast offers so many volunteering opportunities across all of their four houses including: gardening, driving residents to appointments; assisting on outings and arranging or carrying out activities.” To volunteer give them a call on 02890 381332.

VICTIM SUPPORT NI LAUNCH NEW SUPPORT SERVICE FOR CHILDREN Victim Support NI is the leading charity supporting victims and witnesses of crime in Northern Ireland. In 2020, they launched a groundbreaking new advocacy service offering free legal advice and support to victims of serious sexual crime. These Sexual Offences Legal Advisers (SOLA) have so far helped almost 2,500 victims to navigate the criminal justice system, and this support will now be extended to children and young people by a new Children’s SOLA, Emma-Rose Duffy. Emma-Rose has always had an interest in children’s rights and a desire to engage in meaningful work with a positive impact. A student visit to LA allowed her to observe innovative child-sensitive courts and ignited an interest in advocacy for child witnesses, inspiring her to volunteer with the NSPCC Young Witness Service on her return to NI. A master’s degree in Children’s Rights followed before qualifying as a solicitor in 2019. Working with the Children’s Law Centre, she promoted the rights of young people in the legal system, with a particular focus on mental health.

SPECSAVERS NORTHERN IRELAND HOME VISITS TEAM BRING EYECARE TO THOSE WHO NEED IT

Can’t get to your local Specsavers store? Don’t worry, you can request an eye test at home through two Specsavers Home Visits teams which operate across Northern Ireland.

Alan Myers, Allison Maternaghan, Graham Hanna, Matthew Brennan and their teams cover every county in Northern Ireland, operating out of their hubs in Belfast and Ballymena, but reaching every town and village that might need them. Specsavers Home Visits offers comprehensive eye tests in the homes and care homes of people who are unable to leave their house unaccompanied due to a physical or mental illness or disability. Eye tests undertaken at home by one of the Specsavers Home Visits team are very similar to the ones you would experience in-store, with just a few adjustments and specialist equipment to make them home-friendly. All Northern Ireland Specsavers Home Visits opticians are fully experienced and qualified to conduct eye tests at home and if they detect any symptoms that indicate a more serious condition, they may refer you to your GP or local hospital for further examination. Alan Myers, Director of the Ballymena Specsavers Home Visits team, which covers counties Antrim, Derry, Tyrone and Fermanagh, said that it is a huge privilege to provide these services to their customers. “We operate a hugely important service here in Northern Ireland as there are many people who cannot get to a store or their local practitioner to receive healthcare. Not only are we visiting thousands of people at home, we are also ensuring the sight of customers who live in care homes is being cared for, and we have been a part of many wonderful peoples’ lives, helping them with the care they need to live better lives.” Graham Hanna, Director of the Belfast Specsavers Home Visits hub which also covers parts of County Antrim, alongside Counties Tyrone, Armagh and Down, added, “Not only are we being welcomed into our customers’ homes, but we’re also engaging with so many people throughout the community, attending fundraisers and supporting where we can. We engage with carers to ensure they know this is a service available for their loved ones, and we are privileged to spend time with older and more vulnerable people who could be experiencing loneliness and isolation. We are very passionate about supporting our local community by providing this very necessary service.”

SAMARITANS IS ALL ABOUT HAVING TIME FOR OTHERS WHO ARE FINDING LIFE DIFFICULT Volunteers and their roles • Volunteers are the life blood of the organisation. They are ordinary people, from all parts of the community, giving their time freely to support those who contact us from all across the UK. As Chad Varah put it Samaritans are ordinary people doing extraordinary things. • Volunteers receive comprehensive training and mentoring, all done by volunteers within the branch, to be able to provide a confidential and non-judgemental space for History of the Belfast branch • Samaritans was started by Chad Varah, an Anglican minister and social activist, with the 1st call taken on 2 November 1953. • 8 years later, on 1 November 1961 the Belfast branch started taking calls as the first Samaritans branch to be opened in Ireland and the 13th in the UK. • Bill Thompson was our first director and the current building in Wellesley Avenue is named Thompson House after him. • Samaritans answers a call for emotional support every 10 seconds and the Belfast branch is available 24/7 to be there for our callers. It is a privilege to be there to provide emotional support to our callers and to enable them to talk openly about what is going on for them and, at times, to talk about things that they have not spoken about to anyone else. To be able to develop that trust in a single call is amazing. Conference 2025 • Belfast branch has the honour of showcasing Belfast by hosting the annual Samaritans Ireland Conference this year and will focus on trauma in childhood and beyond and the impact on our callers. • Volunteers and staff from across Ireland will come to Belfast to learn from speakers and to network across the branches

• Prison Team – we have a team that visits Hydebank Wood College and Women’s Prison fortnightly. Here the team go to the prisoners and young offenders on the wings to give them the opportunity to talk about how they are feeling. • Volunteer Support – it is so important that we support our volunteers. There is support for volunteers while on shift, support after the shifts and also support from our volunteer support team. • Recruitment, training for new volunteers and ongoing training for existing volunteers

our callers to share how they are feeling. We are not counsellors; we listen and talk with the caller to give them a safe space to find their own way through their problems and come up with the options that will help them. • In Belfast, we take phone calls, and we answer webchat calls. Calling to talk is by far the most common way of our callers getting in contact. However, webchat is an online chat service that is currently a pilot program, running 6 evenings per week – the chat service is open to all callers, but we find that a lot of young people find this to be a good way of getting in contact. Other work in which we are involved • In Belfast we have groups of volunteers who, in addition to their listening roles, take on other roles: • Outreach – the team goes out to business, schools, community organisations to talk about the work of Samaritans, the support that is available and how people can help each other by listening. The outreach talks in schools are tailored to younger people and focus on the support under 18s can give to each other.

– we have a really dedicated team to bring new volunteers on board and to make sure that the volunteers are knowledgeable and supported when they start taking calls and that existing volunteers have an opportunity for ongoing development. How to seek help • Call the free phone number 116 123 • Email jo@samaritans.org • Go to www.samaritans.org How to become a volunteer with Samaritans • Go to www.samaritans.org and apply to the branch that you are interested in joining • In Belfast we do 1 shift per week (shift times vary but average 4 hours) and every 6th shift is an overnight, when our callers can be at their lowest ebb.

A Helping Hand Leading charities from across Northern Ireland have come together at Stormont to support a motion expressing grave alarm at the number of emergency food parcels distributed to children by Trussell food banks in the last five years. Across Northern Ireland, Trussell’s community of food banks distributed 35,000 emergency food parcels across Northern Ireland between April and September 2024 – this included 14,000 parcels provided for children facing hunger. The majority of food parcels were distributed to families with children, with 71% of parcels going to households with children aged 0–16. Compared to the same period in 2019, this figure has increased by 93%. The cost of child poverty over the next five years will be five billion pounds, according to the Northern Ireland Audit Office, and a failure to tackle child poverty early and effectively risks lifelong impacts to children’s health, education and general development. Fiona Cole, Policy Manager at Trussell, said: “The Assembly has been back for a year now, and yet the anti-poverty strategy – which is key to improving the lives of so many– has not appeared. “We are grateful for all of the MLAs who have supported this motion, but it must translate into action. The Assembly has to provide the hope of a better future, or we could see a generation of children who have their hopes cruelly taken away from them by systemic poverty.” Trussell believe that no child in Northern Ireland should experience poverty and together call on the NI Executive to:

Charities Demand the Assembly Tackles Child Poverty

· Implement an evidence-based Anti-Poverty Strategy based on objective need that specifically targets Child Poverty; · Endorse the Essentials Guarantee campaign ensuring Westminster guarantees at a minimum, Universal Credit should protect people from going without essentials; · Scrap the 2-child limit to the child element of Universal Credit, and introduce a new weekly Child Payment to all children in poverty; · Invest in the free school day by reducing school uniform costs, increasing free school meal entitlements, and re-introducing holiday hunger payments; · Invest in accessible, good quality childcare by increasing flexible and affordable high quality childcare, removing barriers to paid employment. The motion was passed unanimously by the MLAs in attendance.

Belfast Charitable Society supports Belfast Black Santa appeal with significant donation On Christmas Eve, 250 years ago, following more than a decade of fundraising, planning and building, Clifton House, formerly the Poor House of Belfast, opened its doors for the first time. As part its 250th anniversary celebrations, Belfast Charitable Society made a significant donation to the Black Santa appeal. Professor Alastair Adair, Chair of the Belfast Charitable Society, explains: “It was on the eve of Christmas, 250 years ago in 1774, that members of the Belfast Charitable Society met in the Market House (now the Assembly Rooms) and agreed, with ‘immediate effect’, that ‘as many of the Begging poor as the Poor House can at present accommodate be received as soon as possible’. All these years later, the ethos of these founding members remains strong in the charitable activities of this organisation, which is evident again today as we announce our latest donation on what is the official anniversary of the opening of the Poor House.” Paula Reynolds, CEO of Belfast Charitable Society, expands: “This year, as well as reflecting on our long history of philanthropy and social reform, we have also been looking ahead to our future. Throughout the year, we brought others together to talk about the reality of poverty and disadvantage today – with an aim to inform our future work. The decision to support Black Santa’s remarkable fundraising this year has been as a direct result of the feedback we have gathered over the last 12 months in order to support those most in need.” Black Santa supports dozens of charities every year, supporting a range of needs across the city of Belfast and Northern Ireland. Last year, 120 charities received funding. This year is no different. 126

Black Santa, Dean Stephen Forde, is joined by CEO of Belfast Charitable Society, Paula Reynolds, and Chair of Belfast Charitable Society, Professor Alastair Adair, as they announce a significant donation to mark the 250th Anniversary of Clifton House.
