Christmas Cheer
DEPUTY EDITOR: Joanne Harkness EDITORIAL MANAGER: James Sherry DIGITAL MARKETING & SALES MANAGER: Julie Patterson
I
always enjoy a few pre-Christmas trips to Belfast city centre; it is great to see the city flourish. The recent opening of The Ivy and Amelia Hall are just two examples of how Belfast is continuing to develop in terms of its hospitality offering. I also called into the Christmas Market at the City Hall to soak up the atmosphere: the place was buzzing. I do, however, have a few little peeves. The first one is obvious: getting there. I’m fortunate in that I am within walking/cycling distance of town – taxis are so hard to come by these days and buses can be at a snail’s pace due to heavy traffic. Another issue is value for money. When did Belfast get more expensive than London? I was in London a few weeks ago, where a restaurant (with a spectacular view of Tower Bridge) was offering £33 for four small plates and a bottle of wine. These deals are commonplace there. I haven’t seen any offers like this in Belfast recently. How did that happen? So, fingers crossed that the shops, bars and restaurants in the city centre will have a good Christmas and continue to go from strength to strength.

LIFE & TIMES EDITED BY KATHY CLUGSTON
Kathy Clugston is a freelance radio presenter. She chairs the long-running BBC Radio 4 programme ‘Gardeners’ Question Time’ and presents the weekly entertainment show ‘The Ticket’ on BBC Radio Ulster.
Here’s to Less Yapping This month, Kathy reflects on what it means to be an introvert and how we need to recharge our social battery. I had a conversation with a man in the queue at a coffee shop today. This is noteworthy in and of itself. These brief encounters with strangers are becoming increasingly rare. Perhaps we are too afraid of being ignored or rebuffed. Maybe we look too stressed and unapproachable and/or are wearing earbuds, which is hardly an invitation to chat. Anyway, this man remarked on a large Alsatian outside (a dog, not a French person) gazing stoically and silently at a trio of tiny dogs who were frantically yapping around its feet. “Have you noticed”, he said “that it’s always the wee dogs making all the noise?” “A bit like the human world,” I quipped. I wasn’t really sure what I meant but thought it sounded witty. The man smiled then furrowed his brow and I realised he might think I was having a go at short people, which wasn’t at all my intention, especially since the top of this man’s head barely reached my shoulder. “What I mean is, it’s the loud ones who get all the attention. And they’re not necessarily the voices we want to hear.” “You’re right”, he said, “I hadn’t thought of it like that.” It’s taken me many years to realise that loud doesn’t always equal interesting. I look back with horror to my younger days when I would regale an assembled company with my exploits, taking their silence as rapt attention when they were more likely longing for me to shut up so that they might have a go at saying something themselves. I then used to have huge crashes where I could hardly bear company at all. What I didn’t understand was that, despite my media job and apparent sociability, I’m an introvert. I need solitude to top up
what these days we might call our ‘social battery’. This life-changing revelation came from reading Susan Cain’s 2012 bestseller Quiet in which she explains that introverts - up to a third of the population, she says - are disadvantaged by a society that rewards speaking up, showing off and valuing one’s own opinions over others’. This is particularly true in the workplace where open-plan offices and team meetings are the scourge of the worker who prefers to get on with it quietly and interact with people one-on-one. One of the great joys of being a freelancer is having to attend absolutely no office parties. Whilst I love marvelling at the shiny, glossy people in the pages of this magazine, I feel quite queasy when I think of all the small talk required to get through just one of these glamorous events. I used to dread meeting a certain colleague (a long time ago) whose opening gambit was always “What’s new and exciting with you?” I could have just won the lottery or been shortlisted for the Booker Prize but my mind would instantly go blank. Extroverts love this kind of question as it gives them carte blanche to launch into an anecdote (no shade on extroverts, we love your funny stories), but if you’re at a Christmas party this season and sense someone is more

introverted, the trick is to ask them a number question instead - how long have you known Sally/worked in healthcare? etc. – something that has a specific answer that can then be expanded upon. It’s also important to listen to their response. It’s amazing how many people ask a question and can barely wait for you to stop talking so they can leap in with their own thoughts. The man in the cafe is handed his cappuccino. He raises it a little in my direction. “Here’s to less yapping,” he says. Cheers to that.
THIS MONTH’S OBSESSIONS: PRECIPICE – The new novel by Robert Harris about the real-life affair between Herbert Henry Asquith, Britain’s prime minister when WWI broke out in 1914, and socialite Venetia Stanley, who was less than half his age. They corresponded multiple times a day, and although he destroyed her letters, many of his to her survive and were used as source material. An abridged version in ten parts is read by John Heffernan on BBC Sounds.
international artists were selected through an open submission process. Three prizes were awarded by this year’s guest judge Phil Jupitus. Free to view at the Ulster Museum in Belfast until 5th January 2025. ELECTORAL DYSFUNCTION – Fast becoming my favourite UK politics podcast. As with others, it brings together two people from right and left - in this case Tory peer Ruth Davidson and Labour’s Baroness (Harriet) Harman - with Sky News’s political correspondent Beth Rigby as neutral host. There’s great chemistry between them and a good dose of insider gossip.

Joy Scott was awarded an OBE for voluntary services to social housing in Northern Ireland and attended her investiture at Windsor Castle on 16th October 2024, where she was presented her award by HRH The Prince of Wales. Joy is a retired solicitor who lives in Dundonald. Joy was accompanied at the ceremony by her sister Kim, brother-in-law David Hamilton, her nephew David Hamilton and niece Holly Hamilton.
Police Service of Northern Ireland detective, Clodagh Dunlop, who had a brainstem stroke 10 years ago that left her paralysed with locked-in syndrome and only able to communicate by blinking one eye, received an MBE for her work with stroke survivors. Clodagh underwent a procedure called a thrombectomy to remove a clot in her brain and she is now a fervent supporter of the “Saving Brains” and “Thriving After Stroke” campaigns. Clodagh received her investiture at Windsor Castle on 25th September 2024 from HRH The Princess Royal.
TREVOR DOUGLAS BEM It has been a busy year for Trevor Douglas, general manager at St Anne’s Cathedral, Belfast. Awarded the British Empire Medal for peacebuilding and reconciliation, Trevor was accompanied in April to the ceremony at Hillsborough Castle by wife Karen, daughter Joy and son-in-law Dr James Stafford. In conjunction with others from NI involved in the memorial service for the late Queen, he attended a private reception with King Charles III at Buckingham Palace and will return to London for the garden party at a later date. July saw Trevor celebrate his 40th wedding anniversary, Karen graduate with honours PG Dip from Leeds Beckett University and the couple attend the summer reception at the Department of Irish Foreign Affairs. Their ruby anniversary was celebrated with a trip to California and Hawaii in October before Trevor returned to work in preparation for the annual Black Santa fundraiser in December. 36

INTERVIEW
The Chief Jane Hardy chats to Chief Constable Jon Boutcher about how he got into policing, his plans for Christmas, and the joy in becoming a dog owner.
S
weeping into his office for the interview a few minutes late, Jon Boutcher (59), Chief Constable of the Police Service of Northern Ireland, delivers a throwaway line. “I’m always late, I want to see if the world has collapsed.” He’s a witty man but entirely serious about policing and the matter of running the Police Service of Northern Ireland, a job which, as he notes, puts him under more scrutiny than the heads of other UK police services, apart from possibly the head of the Metropolitan Police. We tackle seasonal questions on Christmas and whether the police dread the season of making merry. “Christmas is an important time. Generally, police look forward to Christmas as a magical time for kids and families and by and large, people tend to be nicer to each other, to come together. But they would also say it’s a difficult time for all the emergency services, with the 24-hour a day role, plus one of the consequences is that people have to work through Christmas.” The Boutcher home will be lit up with seasonal lights, as he explains. “It’s a winter wonderland. My neighbour produces reindeers dancing and Santa’s in his garage.” Asked whether he is keen on cooking and helps with the festive dinner, Mr Boutcher responds: “Just Eat! No, I did get into cooking during lockdown, produced anything and everything my wife wanted but didn’t have a trademark dish.” An expert on Northern Irish affairs via leading the Kenova report into victims, Boutcher arrived at a challenging moment in the PSNI’s history. “It was a tough time and a colleague had been shot in a terrorist attack in which he nearly lost his life. My predecessor had stopped recruiting as the organisation had no money even to replace officers and staff who were retiring, the PSNI has its lowest
numbers on record due to not being adequately funded, there was a court case that had found that the previous chief had acted wrongly in suspending and moving an officer from his workplace. There was no money to pay the staff their pay awards and then there was the catastrophic data breach that placed information about our officers and staff in the public domain. That of itself had a huge and detrimental impact on everyone in the organisation. It should not be forgotten that the data breach had a significant impact on families and their confidence in the organisation. Arguably it was the toughest year the PSNI has faced and included the resignation of the Chief Constable. Yet throughout this traumatic period the men and women of the PSNI came to work every day and did an incredible job, notwithstanding what they were going through.” He has an ambitious three-year plan to get staffing levels up and increase funding. “We need that support.” Jon Boutcher got into policing almost by accident. The Royal Marines’ loss was the police force’s gain as he applied for both jobs. “I loved school but wasn’t particularly academic, I left school without the qualifications to get me into policing. I wanted to serve and was motivated by the UK military response in the Falklands War – I will never forget watching the tragic images of those who were killed and lost. His father thought he would be better off in London and pointed out an advert in The Daily Mirror for the police force and Boutcher wrote in. He got in, having to take the entrance exam as he didn’t have the O-levels required and the rest is police force history. In a brilliant career, which now includes a Master’s from Cambridge acquired as a mature student, Boutcher has fought Al-Qaida and organised-crime groups in counter terrorism across

somebody, you leave an impression. So every time we deal with the public, it’s so important we deal with them really well, are empathetic, we listen to them and deal with whatever complexity they’re dealing with the best way we can, to leave a positive impression.” The Chief says that he enjoys living here. “Listen, Northern Ireland is a very special place which we all know for too long went through horrendous times. But all I have seen is the very best of Northern Ireland and its people. I am a huge fan of the people here, and we’ve got so many exciting emerging communities.” This includes the Muslim community and both during and after the August riots, Boutcher reached out to them. He feels his staff are the most impressive across the UK. “I really think the best of policing I’ve seen is here in Northern Ireland. It’s a really challenging job. That’s the stress of dealing with people with addiction, alcohol or mental health problems, telling parents their child has been injured or even died in a traffic collision. Not many people can do this job, which is relentless but brilliant and rewarding.” So how does he relax? “I like to have a pint with friends although it’s not popular to say that now. We discuss boring issues like sport.” Sport is the Chief’s passion. “I can’t think of many sports I don’t like watching and in the police we have rugby, a great GAA side and football. I’m head of Police Football across the UK.” He used to be a centre back (“I wasn’t a pretty player, my timing wasn’t what I wanted nor my opponents.”), also a lifetime Derby County Football club supporter. The Derbyshire man concedes this can be traumatic but there have been highlights. “The best memory was beating Real Madrid 4-1 in around ’75. Charlie George scored a hat trick. But there are lots of memories of losing.” Boutcher’s 92-year-old mother regularly attends home games. He also enjoys walking the dog, Ruby, a Cockapoo. She arrived after Boutcher’s wife texted him when he was in Moscow at a World Cup match. “She said I didn’t go on holidays, and she’d sorted the dog. I showed my brother the text, who said, ‘What does that mean?’ I said I think it means we’ve got a dog. I didn’t want it, but it’s been the best thing that’s happened.”
the globe. Almost his entire career has been as a detective with much of it spent in covert policing, including being deployed as an undercover officer infiltrating organised crime gangs. Later he would become the national policing lead for undercover policing. His career included time spent as a detective inspector in the world renowned Flying Squad. “There have been lots of high points and of course some tough times, such as having to support and watch my officers work through the scenes of the London Bombings of 7/7 in 2005 and seeing the impact those bombs had on so many innocent lives. I’ve had guns and knives pulled on me and even an axe to try and prevent me arresting someone. I can’t pick out one incident that I recall above others as so many stand out but in my view simply being a police officer means so much. You get to make a positive difference to peoples’ lives in a way that no other profession does. I am especially proud of working with the men and women of the PSNI who each recognise and understand the job here in policing comes with additional risks and yet they still join and come to work every day to do the best they can. They are a very special group of people.” The Chief Constable feels that the real story about the police doesn’t tend to get onto the small screen. “We’re the most scrutinised police service and whenever things go wrong, which is rare, we’re held strictly to account. Yet as we’re sitting here, police officers are de-escalating violent situations, dealing with challenging domestic abuse, seeking to protect people from harm, dealing with horrendous and tragic road traffic collisions, managing people when they are going through horrendous mental health crisis, the list goes on and on. None of that story gets told day-to-day. The story of policing that the public get told is when, and it happens rarely, something may have gone wrong. Yet we are judged by outcomes which we can’t always affect.” One exception the Chief cites as truthful is the cop show Blue Lights. “It was brilliantly written. It’s a drama, let’s not forget that, but I think it deals with the real and complex issues that exist still in society here and I am a big advocate of it. We have supported the programme makers with access to our staff to make sure it’s as authentic as possible. Individual officers shared their lived experience.” It is good PR for the police, but according to Boutcher that’s beside the point. “It is good PR showing members of the police as human beings. You can have all the PR you want, but the most important word to me in policing is authenticity.” He refers to something called Lockhart’s principle. “It’s a scientific principle which says Chief Constable Jon Boutcher pictured with Sonia Copeland, Jane Hardy and that every time you touch something, you leave Alderman Jim Rodgers at the recent Ulster Tatler Christmas drinks reception. a trace, DNA, thumbprint, whatever. My slight amendment to that is every time you speak to

Easing Your Allergy Concerns The Belfast Children’s Allergy Clinic is run by Dr. Mugilan Anandarajan, pediatric consultant. Dr. Mugilan Anandarajan sees patients at the Kingsbridge Private Hospital and the Ulster Independent Clinic. What services do you offer at the Belfast Children’s Allergy Clinic? The Belfast Children’s Allergy Clinic specialises in the assessment and management of children’s allergies. We offer specific diagnostic testing for IgE (Immunoglobulin E - which is elevated in allergic sensitisation) allergies, which involves blood investigations for antibody testing for Immunoglobulin E antibodies and also skin prick testing depending on the type of allergy. We also review patients with non-IgE allergies and food intolerances and, depending on their clinical history, offer management plans for elimination diets and food challenges, working together with dieticians. What are the common types of allergies that are seen in children? The common types of food allergies that we see in children are allergies to cow’s milk, egg white, egg yolk, peanut, tree nut, prawn, soya, wheat, fin fish, shell fish and kiwi. We also see children with air allergies, including house dust mite, mould, grass pollen, tree pollen and animal dander (cat, dog and horse dander). Is there a link between food allergies and other conditions such as eczema and asthma? Some children with food allergies would have other associated symptoms of asthma, eczema, hay fever, or dermatitis. Sometimes there is also a strong family history of asthma, eczema, or hay fever, which might predispose a child to developing allergies. What should parents do if they suspect their child has an allergy? If parents suspect that their child had an allergic reaction, they should seek medical advice either from the general practitioner or, if they are acutely unwell, attend the emergency department.
We can review them in the clinic and organise testing depending on clinical history and symptoms. What is the testing process like and how quickly do the results come back? The testing for food allergies and air allergens is based on a detailed clinical history and symptoms. Recommendations for testing will be made on the basis of clinical history and symptoms and national guidelines including the National Institute of Clinical Excellence guidelines for assessment and management of cow’s milk protein intolerance and allergy in children and the Royal College of Pediatrics and Child Health guidelines for the allergy care pathway in children. Depending on the clinical symptoms and history, a child may require investigations including specific IgE testing, skin prick testing elimination diets and food challenges. If a child requires blood investigations for specific IGE tests, it can take anywhere between 10 to 14 working days depending on the type of blood tests. Skin prick testing, if required, is usually performed at the clinic review appointment. It usually takes 15 mins to read the reaction. Are there particular allergies and intolerances a child can grow out of or is that something they will have to manage for the rest of their lives? Most children with food intolerances would usually grow out of their intolerance. We work together with dietitians for children with food intolerances, co-ordinating their elimination diets and food challenges. If there were severe allergies or anaphylaxis, depending on clinical symptoms and specific IGE testing skin prick testing results, we would be able to advise further on when to be retested and whether there is a need for desensitization. 60
How long have you been in this career and do you have any particular career highlights? I have more than 22 years of pediatric medical experience. I am an experienced consultant in helping babies, children and parents navigate allergies. From testing to recovery, I’ll be with you every step of the way to get your little ones feeling back to their usual happy selves.

Rebecca is founder and Director of Physiotherapy at Apex Clinic and Apex Headache Clinic.
The gift of being headache-free or migraine-free this Christmas With the festive season upon us, Rebecca Nelson, Spinal & Headache, Migraine, Vertigo Physiotherapy Specialist and the founder of Apex Clinic and Apex Headache Clinic, shares her top tips on staying headache and migrainefree this Christmas. December is one of our busiest months at Apex Headache Clinic. For many, the festive season is a time of stress, involving lastminute shopping, present delivering and plenty of household chores. While most will attribute their headaches or migraines to the stress of the silly season, the source of the problem is often entirely different. It is not well known that headaches and migraines are in fact triggered from the upper neck region of the spine, even when the sufferer, in many cases, doesn’t have any neck pain. Apex Headache Clinic can assess your neck to find the exact area which is responsible for triggering your headaches or migraines. A course of treatment will then follow, involving our unique regime of manual physiotherapy treatment, only offered at Apex Headache Clinic, called the Nelson Headache Approach™. Our approach has an extremely high success rate in clearing or significantly easing patients of their debilitating headaches or migraines with 80% of patients experiencing 75-100% improvement. It is our high success rate and medical model of treatment that encourages patients from all over Ireland and the UK to come to us for treatment. Whilst we receive many referrals from consultant neurologists, paediatricians and GPs, patients can also refer themselves. Apex Headache Clinic’s survival guide for taking the headache or migraine out of Christmas • Choose your pillow carefully. Soft or flat pillows can be awful for triggering headaches and migraines as well as triggering neck pain and stiffness. Apex Headache Clinic are fighting the war against poor pillows with our own, custommade orthopaedic pillow collection,
• Avoid heavy lifting such as carrying heavy shopping bags, which can excessively load the upper neck region and trigger headaches or migraines. Instead, choose a trolley rather than a basket and minimize the lifting of heavy loads. • Be careful when it comes to wine consumption, as even in small quantities, wine can trigger headaches or migraines severely. Spirits and cocktails with pure fruit juice are much less of a trigger, and ensure you balance alcohol drinking with water to keep hydrated. • When a headache or migraine strikes, many people reach for painkillers in the hope of a little relief. However, too frequent medication can actually make them worse so limit taking tablets to the worst two or three days of any week and avoid taking codeine. A heat pack can provide short term relief and ice is not recommended.
which are clinically proven to reduce neck pain, headaches and/or migraines in the majority of cases. The Apex Sleepwell Pillow™ is available to purchase from reception in our Stormont-based clinic. • Resist the urge to sit in front of the TV all day. Prolonged periods of sitting in the same position often leads to a stiff neck, triggering headaches or migraines in the process. Break up those box set marathons with movement breaks. As little as a brisk walk for 5 to 10 minutes is all that is required to help to keep your neck from stiffening up.

It’s like having a new life being migraine- free! 57-year-old Joe Byrne from Co. Meath had been suffering constant migraines for five years. During these terrible years, he had tried everything in the hope of getting even a little relief, but nothing helped. Here, Joe shares how the clinic’s unique regime of specialist manual physiotherapy treatment for headaches and migraines, called The Nelson Headache ApproachTM, cleared his migraines, meaning that he could enjoy life again without constant pain. Joe, when did your migraines begin? Around five years ago I started having migraines, it started suddenly with no real reason causing it. I was told that it may have been due to an old whiplash injury but I couldn’t pinpoint one particular thing that had triggered my migraines. I tried physio elsewhere, closer to home, and I was also put on medication for my migraines but I was still suffering with constant pain and dizziness every single day. How did the migraines affect your life? I had headaches all day, every day and I had to just push through it and continue on, I forgot what it was like not being in constant pain. At night when I wasn’t busy and it was quiet, I would suffer the most as there was nothing to take my mind off the pain. When I lay down in bed, I would feel the pain the most and I didn’t get a good night’s sleep for a very long time.

What led you to Apex Headache Clinic? My wife went online to try and find me some help with my migraines. That was when she came across the Apex Headache Clinic website. I decided to give Apex a call and get more information and to book an initial appointment. I live in Co. Meath which is a 1 hour and 45 minute drive away from
Belfast so it was a commitment to attend once per week for treatment at the beginning, but I was willing to give anything a try, to get rid of the constant migraines that I had. How has your life changed since having treatment? My migraines have completely gone! I attended for treatment with my specialist headache physiotherapist once a week at the beginning and once I started to gain improvement my appointments were spaced out further until the improvement was maintained for longer. It’s like having a new life, being migraine-free, and those people close to me have even noticed a difference as I am in much better form, especially now that I can get a full night’s sleep. What advice would you offer someone suffering from migraines or headaches? I would say go to Apex Headache Clinic, although it was far for me to travel from Co. Meath, I felt that it was so worth it and has given me my life back. To book an appointment at Apex Headache Clinic, call: 028 9048 4153. No GP referral is necessary.

THE SECRET OF GETTING AHEAD...
ULSTER TATLER PROFILE
...IS GETTING STARTED WHAT EDUCATIONAL ROUTE DID YOU TAKE TO BECOME A PSYCHOLOGIST? I was the first in my family to attend university and didn’t take the traditional route. Like many, I left school as soon as I could and took on a trade. I spent many years training and working as a butcher before my wife encouraged me to return to school. My second educational journey started with an access course at SERC, which I loved, and the impressive teaching staff there. I recommend an access course if anyone is considering getting back into education. I then started and completed my undergraduate degree in psychology at Ulster University in Coleraine. I found being around so many excellent lecturers inspiring, and I knew early on in my degree I wanted to do a postgraduate degree once I finished my initial degree. As part of my initial degree, I had the opportunity to meet and attend lectures from Professor Mickey Keenan. His teaching opened my eyes, and he inspired a type of thinking that I didn’t know existed in me, so when the opportunity came to be supervised by him for a PhD, I made it my mission to get it, and thankfully, I achieved it. Professor Keenan is a legend in our field of behaviour analysis and remains today a friend, mentor and confidant. 67
A MASSIVE INCREASE IN MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS AMONG THE YOUNG IS BEING WIDELY REPORTED. WHAT FACTORS DO YOU THINK ARE INVOLVED? The young people of today’s world must deal with a world that didn’t exist when my generation was young. Alongside the apparent stress of school and the pressures to perform well in exams, the competitive nature of education can lead to significant stress and anxiety. Young people today are under constant pressure from social media. Constant connectivity and the influence of social media can lead to feelings of inadequacy, cyberbullying, and a distorted sense of reality. The cost of navigating today’s world has created financial instability, and concerns about the future can create a sense of uncertainty and stress. WHAT AGE GROUP DO YOU MOSTLY SEE IN YOUR PRACTICE? At the clinic, we work with people of all ages, adults (25 +), whose mental health system has failed. Many report that they have been on waiting lists for mental health services for many years with no end in sight. Young Adults (18-25 years) commonly struggle with anxiety, depression, and stress related to life transitions, such as school, starting a career, or becoming more independent. Children (5-12
ULSTER TATLER PROFILE years) often face issues related to anxiety and attentiondeficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Each age group requires tailored approaches to address their specific mental health needs effectively. We always find the right person to help each client to ensure that they get the best possible help and advice. IN A STRETCHED HEALTHCARE SYSTEM, ARE SOME PEOPLE REACHING CRISIS POINTS BEFORE ACCESSING HELP? Unfortunately, many people reach crisis points in a stretched healthcare system before accessing the help they need. Long waiting times, high service demand, and limited resources can delay receiving care. This is particularly true for mental health services, where early intervention is crucial. When people can’t get timely support, their conditions can worsen, leading to more severe crises that require urgent and often more intensive care. It’s a significant issue highlighting the need for better funding, more healthcare professionals, and improved access to early intervention services. CAN MEDICATION ALONE SOLVE SOME MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS? Medication can be a crucial part of managing mental health problems, but it is generally not considered a standalone solution. While medications like antidepressants, antipsychotics, and mood stabilisers can help alleviate symptoms and improve overall well-being, they often work best when combined with other forms of treatment, such as psychotherapy, counselling, and lifestyle changes. For many people, a combination of medication and therapy provides the most comprehensive approach to managing mental health issues. Therapy can help individuals develop coping strategies, address underlying issues, and make meaningful changes in their lives, while medication can help manage symptoms and make treatment more effective. YOU ARE ALSO INVOLVED IN RESEARCH AND CHARITY WORK. CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT THIS? While doing my PhD, Professor Keenan nurtured a
passion I had for research. I am passionate about the science of behaviour analysis in both its applied and research applications, and I regularly present at home and international conferences. Most recently, I presented at the ABAI conference in Philadelphia, America, on the transfer of function within a stimulus class. Next year, I plan to present a series of case studies on using commonsense ABA at the Division of Behaviour Analysis conference in Dublin. I am also a fervent campaigner for the rights of people with psychological and cognitive disabilities. I’m on the committee for a charity in Northern Ireland called PEAT (Parents Education as Autism Therapists). At PEAT, we use evidence-based practices and provide practical behaviour support and training to parents/carers of children with autism. In the new year, we will run a series of parent/carer information events to provide seminars to help parents/ carers with advice and resources. I am also a big supporter of Caleb’s Cause. Caleb’s Cause is campaigning for post-19 care and placements for young adults with a diagnosis of autism and other cognitive disabilities. Alma White, the head of Caleb’s cause, has taken on this fight for her son Caleb and for the thousands of other young adults who are out of the education system and have nowhere to go to further their education or skills training. PERSONALLY, WHAT DO YOU DO TO MANAGE STRESS? I like to do the same as most people; I enjoy socialising and talking with my family and friends. Having people you trust and respect around you is essential. I regularly speak to my family and friends about any stress I feel. I find the advice or insights helpful as they usually provide guidance from a perspective I hadn’t considered or could not see. Talking is the most important thing anyone can do. It doesn’t have to be with a therapist. It can be with anyone you trust. I enjoy taking our three dogs to the beach to have a run and a swim, which helps me destress; there is something about the sea that I find calming. The coastal path between Holywood and Bangor is therapy in itself. Lastly, I enjoy a good book. I find something calming about the anticipation of what will happen in the pages of the latest John Grisham novel.

MEDICATION CAN BE A CRUCIAL PART OF MANAGING MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS, BUT IT IS GENERALLY NOT CONSIDERED A STANDALONE SOLUTION.

Why I Love... Christmas
Artist Stephen Whalley.
Do you look forward to the Christmas season? I love Christmas and am always busy with painting commissions and our Christmas Gift Days that my wife and I hold at our gallery and studio space this time of year. I love getting together with family and friends to go out to various events and enjoy getting into the Christmas spirit! My two boys Ethan (12) and Jake (8) make this time of year extra special. We also hold lots of painting events, which are Christmasthemed for adults and children and we always launch lots of new paintings, limited edition prints and products at this time of year. This year I’m supporting the RNLI by launching a special limited edition print of the lifeboat in Donaghadee harbour, which was painted at one of their amazing charity events back in June this year. Its also a great time to chill and relax with my amazing family and have a well-earned break after Santa visits! Do you have any Christmas traditions that you look forward to? We love going to pick our tree as a family and bring it home squeezed into the car! We always leave our tree up to the Belfast Zoo to feed the elephants once it’s all
over and love passing these traditions onto our boys. We also love decorating the house as we all have that creative gene…luckily! What’s on your Christmas wish list? I love giving presents more than receiving, but I suppose I do have a soft spot for my favourite whiskey, Redbreast 12- year-old and any products associated with it! My favourite Belfast eatery is Home restaurant and I always like to receive a little gift voucher from there. Do you enjoy cooking over the festive season? Cooking and baking are two of my favourite hobbies and I just love cooking for everyone at Christmas. I have quite a few good friends who are chefs and restaurateurs and they always have great tips for me when it comes to cooking at this time of year. Baking is another passion of mine and I remember when I was a little boy my granny teaching me how to bake,
I even hold a star from the Great Taste Awards for my chocolate caramel squares, which I make and give as gifts to friends and family at Christmas time. What is your favourite Christmas movie? It would have to be Deck the Halls starring Danny Devito and Matthew Boderick, a real Christmas classic with lots of laughs along the way! My two sons love watching this over and over again, and it never gets boring in our household.

I have a pile of books that I’m planning to get to enjoy with a glass or two of the red stuff. And of course, that pile includes new interior bibles for 2025’s inspiration.
Do you look forward to the Christmas season? It’s the season for creativity, so I love it! My studio is magically transformed with decorations and Christmas fragrance, to welcome lovely clients who I’ve known for years and to meet new ones that have popped in to see what we’re about and buy a gift or two. It’s a really busy time of the year for the team, finishing clients’ homes, in time for the big day. It’s a pleasure to bring a sense of Christmas magic to people’s lives by creating warmth to their homes for their gatherings of family
Do you enjoy cooking over the festive season? Yes, I definitely plan to put on a few pounds! It’s all part of Christmas, isn’t it? The treats and having more time to enjoy cooking as a family. It’s when the Aga comes into its own, cooking up family favourites – mine is Christmas pudding. Our kitchen is the hub of the house and it definitely will be filled with laughter and good food. There’s nothing like sharing a good meal together and having tasty treats when unexpected guests pop in; it’s all part of the holidays.
and friends. On each project, after installing their curtains, furniture etc, we leave one of our Christmas scented candles in their entrance hall and place one of our special Christmas wreaths on their front door, spraying it with our own privately blended room sprays, which is a Christmas fragrance of juniper, orange, clove, and cinnamon – it’s a wonderful scented welcome for their guests. Do you have any Christmas traditions that you look forward to? Decorating at home is a gentle build-up, we share it on Instagram; it starts mid November, with lighting our Christmas range of scented candles, the first fragrance was created 21 years ago and we are blessed that it is now a tradition in a lot of other families’ homes. We have clients coming into the shop to buy them as gifts, and for their homes, and say Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without our scented candle. What’s on your Christmas wish list? Having a few days off to kick back and enjoy time with the family. Movies, log fires and big walks over the fields are what I am looking forward to. I love reading, so
What’s your favourite Christmas movie? That’s an easy one, The Holiday. The beautiful setting in the snow, the cottage and the home in California, two extremes of traditional and contemporary interiors, both stunning. The movie captures the spirit of the season with its humour and heartwarming moments. It’s a film that never fails to lift me and get me in the holiday mood. Why I Love...Christmas Belfast Lord Mayor, Micky Murray.
Do you look forward to the Christmas season? I look forward to the Christmas season every year, but this year in particular has been especially exciting. Not only have I had the opportunity to turn on the Christmas lights in our capital city, but I have been invited to events happening all around the city, hosted by workers and volunteers who are going the extra mile for our communities. I have found this quite humbling, and it has given me particular joy to see the kindness of the people of Belfast first hand. Do you have any Christmas traditions that you look forward to? I would imagine my traditions are similar to those of most in Belfast. We usually meet at my sister’s house, where she cooks and I bring an amazing dessert (and try to avoid the washing up post-dinner). Every year for as long as I can remember, either myself or family members would work on Christmas Day, so we really appreciate the time we get to spend together.
What’s on your Christmas wish list? I’m going to say a good, fancy coat. I have attended so many outdoor events in these past few weeks, and NI weather just doesn’t allow for a nice suit to keep you warm! Do you enjoy cooking over the festive season, or is there any particular dish you enjoy at this time of year? I have been banned from attempting to make the Christmas dinner, and it always tastes much better when it is handed to you! But I could also be partial to a Christmas chip with all the trimmings! What’s your favourite Christmas movie? Definitely the Grinch. I feel like I can relate to him on so many levels… Joking of course! But I did get a Grinch Christmas jumper this year, and the film is just a good laugh with a happy ending. That’s what Christmas is about for me.
Christmas fun for all the family at Winter’s Den A packed programme of free festive events and activities is planned for the Winter’s Den at 2 Royal Avenue in Belfast city centre. The former Tesco Metro premises has been transformed into a winter wonderland to help people of all ages get into the festive spirit in the run-up to Christmas. Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Micky Murray said: “Following our Christmas lights switch-on event at City Hall which officially started the countdown to Christmas last weekend, the aim of Winter’s Den is to make sure there is plenty of other free entertainment for people to enjoy between now and Christmas. “Our cultural centre at 2 Royal Avenue is an amazing space with its stunning circular dome and other beautiful architectural features. With its Christmas dressing, it now offers a cosy winter retreat where you can soak up the festive atmosphere and be entertained. Our aim was to create a magical experience for people of all ages. “There’ll be lots of entertainment and activities for the little ones over the coming weeks. This includes an opportunity to design a letter to Santa at Santa’s Post Office, which is operated by the elves at Belfast One. The post office includes a dedicated mailbox to make sure everyone’s letter reaches the North Pole in time. “Between now and 24 December there will be around 30 festive events ranging from free musical performances, Christmas markets, other children’s activities, arts and craft workshops, film screenings, tea dances, ASD/autism friendly workshops and more. So there really is something to get everyone into the Christmas spirit.” For more info on all the Christmas events coming up at Winter’s Den and across the city, visit www.belfastcity.gov.uk/christmas. 86

spiring wine connoisseurs and seasoned sippers were treated to a unique sensory wine-tasting experience hosted by Lidl Northern Ireland. The exclusive ‘Vino Sensoria’ pop-up experience at Belfast Exposed saw Lidl Northern Ireland’s Master of Wine, Richard Bampfield, put guests – including Brian Haslett and Mark Irvine, aka The Gourmet Boys – through the ultimate test of wine tasting, completely in the dark. The event began in the shadows of the Tasting Room before the fearless group was plunged into darkness, entering a world where taste buds were tingled and perceptions were challenged. They sipped their way through a carefully curated collection of sparkling, red, white, and rosé wines from Lidl Northern Ireland – all in complete darkness. The experience culminated in the Lumina Room, where each of the wines was revealed. In a recent poll, 63% Northern Irish consumers prefer Lidl’s £21.99 bottle of Henry Dubois Brut champagne to the market leading luxury label Moët, which retails for around £44. Cheers, Lidl Northern Ireland! I know where I’m buying my festive tipple.

Redacted Whiskey: A New Era of Irish Whiskey – The Perfect Christmas Gift
@redactedbottlers_
Redacted Whiskey, an independent bottler with a mission to celebrate the best whiskey, is redefining what it means to craft whiskey in Ireland. Founded by best friends Michael Cowman and Ronan Collins, Redacted Whiskey is built on transparency, creativity, and a commitment to delivering exceptional, one-of-a-kind releases. We sat down with the founders to learn more about their journey, their philosophy, and why Redacted Whiskey is the ultimate gift for whiskey lovers this Christmas. Q: What inspired the creation of Redacted Whiskey? Michael: We have both been working in Irish whiskey 10+ years now (he laughs), oh it’s been that long. Really it was on a trip to Scotland together, we spent days visiting distilleries, tasting incredible whiskies, and talking about what made each one special. That experience inspired us to take what we love about the spirits industry; great
liquid, respect for craft, and transparency – and build something of our own. Ronan: Living in Ireland, we’re surrounded by amazing whiskey, and we’re constantly asked, “What whiskey should I buy for someone special?” That’s what motivated us to create Redacted Whiskey – a brand that answers that question with a bottle that’s unique, meaningful, and unforgettable.
Q: What makes Redacted Whiskey stand out? Michael: Transparency is a huge part of what we do. In an age when many brands shy away from sharing details, we want to give consumers as much information as possible – where the whiskey was distilled, how it was aged, and what makes it unique. It’s all about respecting the people who buy our bottles and giving them a deeper connection to what they’re drinking. Ronan: Another thing that sets us apart is how we collaborate with local artists for our 700ml releases. Each time we source whiskey, we invite an artist from the area of the distillery to taste the liquid and chat about why we’re excited about the release. The artist then goes away and creates a stunning label inspired by the whiskey. The result is incredible – you’re not just getting a one-of-a-kind bottle of whiskey, but also a piece of art that will never be replicated. Q: Why is Redacted Whiskey the perfect Christmas gift? Ronan: Whiskey is a timeless gift, but Redacted Whiskey takes it to another level. Each release has its own story, from the liquid inside to the art on the label. It’s more than just a drink – it’s an experience, a collectible, and a conversation starter. Also our 20-year-old whiskey fits perfectly in a stocking!
Michael Cowman and Ronan Collins.

Roy McKeown, Managing Director of Raceview Mill and Portfolio Gallery Ltd. Do you look forward to the Christmas season? Yes. This year has been so busy, I’m looking forward to a break from the madness! In 2024, Raceview Mill won the NI Heritage Angel Award and, with the help of Broughshane Primary School, we launched a huge new heritage gallery at the entrance to the Mill. We welcomed several great new tenants to Raceview including Flax Steakhouse, which won the Best Restaurant Award. Flax are now opening an amazing new coffee shop at Raceview Mill. Meanwhile our family Wooltower Wedding Venue and Conference Centre at the mill has gone from strength-to-strength, thanks to my daughter Dawn and husband Matt. It’s been a great year, but exhausting too!

Do you have any Christmas traditions? Christmas is a big event in our family and my wife Veronica starts the preparations before the end of November. Our house has six large Christmas trees and this year our one-year-old twin girls are a big attraction. Everyone opens one present on Christmas Eve – then the rest in front a roaring fire on Christmas morning. Massive turkey and Christmas pudding for lunch, then family games and playing with the kids’ new toys. A very traditional family day. What’s on your Christmas wish list this year? To get the second art gallery at Raceview Mill properly opened in time for Christmas. There already is a Raceview Art Gallery at the mill. However, PORTFOLIO is the re-launch of my original art gallery in Ballymena from 20 years ago – but with lots of fresh new work. Particularly larger, statement canvasses, all by local artists. Art and photography has always been a big part of my DNA and now I’m finding more time to paint, I’m so looking forward to seeing the new gallery coming together.

What makes the Ballymena/Broughshane area special at this time of year? Ballymena has always been a great shopping town and, when we get a dusting of snow, the town centre, Broughshane village and Raceview Mill turn into a beautiful winter wonderland. The twinkling lights, the friendly faces – what’s not to love? Winters in NI can seem endless. Christmas is the time of year when people stop moaning about the cold and put on a smile and the world is a better place. 128

Why I Love... Ballymena Roger Glasgow from The Country Garage.
How long have you been living/working in Ballymena? I have been working at The Country Garage for six years. I have always loved cars, especially the BMW brand, which undoubtedly is one of the reasons why I find it such an exciting place to work! The geographical setting of the showroom is so beautiful as well, especially during this time of year. It has been lovely looking out the window to see the leaves changing colour for the last number of weeks and on a clear day, you can see rolling hills for miles. The garage is family-owned and is celebrating 50 years in business this year, so we love to extend that warm family feel and welcome to our customers.

What do you love most about Ballymena? The town always has a buzz about it, even if you are just driving through to get to one of the neighbouring villages. Great restaurants; great bars; great shops and in my opinion, the best relaxation spot on the island at the Galgorm Resort & Spa. The town always feels like it wants to better itself and this revamp of the Fairhill Shopping Centre is going to be huge for the town.

Where do you like to dine and socialise in the area? Food is where I think Ballymena excels! Nobel Café for a good old Ulster Fry; Middletown for a lunch with amazing flavours and top-tier coffee; Castle Kitchen for a ribeye… I could keep going! A chilled evening in either Galgorm and its gin library; or Tullyglass and its whiskey lounge is hard to beat and for something a bit more energetic, The Grouse in the town centre is a good spot.

ARTS DIARY EDITED BY KELLIE BURCH KELLIE@ULSTERTATLER.COM
Sense of Self Exhibition Launch I have been a fan of artist Frans Gertenbach for quite a while now. With an unquestionable talent and works that often provide a thought-provoking social commentary, he is a refreshing presence in the art world. Sense of Self, Frans’ new exhibition, is a very personal offering, exploring identity, whilst inviting visitors to delve into the artist’s journey of self discovery and expression. Showcasing a collection of twelve acrylic-on-canvas paintings, the official opening at 2 Royal Avenue attracted some familiar faces, such as Julie White and Marie Milanec, whose portraits adorned the walls. Each unique and captivating piece on display explores another step of the artist’s journey to understand his own identity. The exhibition encapsulates the idea that each individual person is made of fragments and we have to view them as a whole to really understand the person they represent. We are shaped by the people and the environments that have impacted us. Frans’ distinct style provides an intimate look into the influences that have resulted in his personal evolution. But it also provides a platform that when viewed, allows the audience to see the reflection of their own ongoing journey of self-discovery and personal growth. When speaking to Frans, he explained his motivation for this collection: “I have always struggled to know who I am and what direction I should take in life. I decided to do the exhibition because I am 55 now and I wanted to know myself more. Sense of Self is a very personal journey. I wanted to really know who I am and to accept myself with all my faults and quirky personality.” The exhibition features portraits of people that Frans felt were successful. ”I chose subjects I thought were a good example of people with a strong sense of self. However, during the process I discovered you can be inspired by other people but ultimately you have to set an example for yourself. It has been a journey for me to accept myself and not compare myself to others; the journey I am on is not someone else’s journey.” The opening of Sense of Self took place on 26th October.

Built to Last launch Each building tells a story. On the surface, it is the tale of how it was built. But beneath that, is the history contained within its walls. And that is why the work of the Ulster Architectural Heritage (UAH) is so important. It not only works to promote the value of built heritage, but it also focuses on the protection, conservation, and regeneration of buildings so that they can continue to tell stories and be enjoyed and appreciated by people and communities. Such vital work deserves to be showcased and that is why the society’s new publication, Built to Last, is such a must read. Inspired by the 30 year anniversary of the Historic Environment Division of the Department of the Communities and UAH setting up the Buildings at Risk Register, the stunning hardback was officially launched in a building featured in its pages - Christchurch, located on the grounds of Belfast Royal Academical Institute. Built to Last profiles 25 such bold and effective projects – completed and in

progress – right across Northern Ireland where important and distinctive buildings which were once in a vulnerable state have been revived for present and future needs in exciting ways. On my arrival at Christchurch, I got the opportunity to chat to Joe Laverty, principle photographer for the book, and designer Lesley-Anne McFall from the Ulster Tatler Group, about the process of capturing the photos and making sure each case study was fully illustrated. The case studies cover a range of building types and record the history of the buildings, why they fell into disuse, the challenges faced, and the new uses found for them. The various authors draw on their wide experience in built heritage to describe the projects in detail. The launch, which was attended by guests such as RSUA director Ciarán Fox, architect Andrew Molloy, and Saul Golden, senior lecturer in Architecture and Spatial Design at Ulster University, was officially opened by the book’s editor, Karen Latimer OBE. In addition to thanking each author who

contributed an essay, she also thanked all those who have worked with buildings at risk for the work they have done, or continue to do, to save our historic buildings. Other speakers at the launch included Janet Williamson, principal of RBAI, who spoke about how Christcurch is used by the school; UAH President Primrose Wilson, who expanded on the background of the Buildings at Risk Register; guest of honour, Radio 3’s Sean Rafferty, who interestingly was once the Treasurer of UAH; and Chair of UAH, David Johnston OBE who concluded the formalities before inviting guests to buy a book and catch up over a glass of wine. Built to Last is not just a book, it is a beautifully designed historical record. It deserves to be pored over and revered as the lessons it contains about the past could, and should, have a profound impact on the future of the legacy of our buildings in Northern Ireland. Built to Last was launched on 14 November.

This latest book from Ulster Architectural Heritage (UAH), Built to Last, profiles 25 bold and effective projects - completed and in progress - right across Northern Ireland where important and distinctive buildings which were once in a vulnerable state have been revived for present and future needs in exciting ways. The book is generously illustrated and also includes essays providing an overview of buildings at risk, the economic and societal value of built heritage and the potential for investment. The case studies cover a range of building types and record the history of the buildings, why they fell into disuse, the challenges faced, and the new uses found for them. Built to Last concludes by highlighting the ongoing mission to save good, usable buildings and identifies a few which are ripe for revival.

Thursday 7th November saw the launch of a new book on Ulster architecture at the headquarters of the Royal Society of Ulster Architects. Titled ‘Ulster Modern: Modern Movement Architecture in Northern Ireland 1921-1949’, it shows the part that Ulster played in the international spread of new architectural ideas in the 1920s to 1940s, with a wealth of illustrations of some of our best known buildings of the period, photographed in their prime, amongst them the Floral Hall, the King’s Hall, various Belfast schools, and the best of our cinemas which are now almost all gone.

Editions were deposited at the Frances Bacon Foundation and Princess Grace Library in Monaco. The tour included the Giacometti Caffe, Foundation Maeght, and the studio of surrealist pioneer, Max Ernst, at Galerie Chave in Vence. Gallerist, Isabelle de Botton who represents Yates’ work in France and Italy is establishing an art foundation where his poetry, paintings and films will be studied and exhibited.
Arts Council Ireland Appointment Mr Richard Yarr MBE DL has been appointed by Minister Catherine Martin T.D. to the board of The Arts Council of Ireland / An Chomhairle Ealaíon, following a competitive process overseen by The Public Appointments Service, Ireland.
The enterprise will be informed by and explore the values expressed by philosopher, Alain de Botton in his ‘Art as Therapy’ manifesto. Isabelle de Botton remarks, ‘Paul Yates is a real surrealist.’ Asked by a group of academics in Cannes to talk about his works, he declined offering instead to play chess or billiards with them, blindfolded.
The appointment is for 5 years and will span all cultural activity in the Republic of Ireland, including the development of a new 10-year Arts strategy.
‘I grew up and was educated in the South of France and understand the passion with which art is regarded there. Truly sui generis, the works of Paul Yates have struck deep chords with aficionados of the avant-garde on the French Rivera.
Richard has extensive experience in the public and charity sector, both through his work with the BBC in Northern Ireland, and organisations including the Charles Wood Festival of Music and Summer School, which he has chaired since 2015.

Paul Yates, Selected Poems, 1967-2023. Winner of ICAD Gold Award for Slater Design, Dublin. ‘From the beginning my relationship with poetry has been that of a were-wolf with the moon, not even the rattle of silver bullets can hush the silence of the howling.’ Paul Yates, reading at the Robert Graves Museum, Majorca, 2022. Belfast born British artist Paul Yates has sustained a highly original and compelling creative output across poetry, painting and film for over five decades while maintaining a very private personal profile, declining interviews and preferring that his work speak for itself. TIME TO TEE OFF The Ulster Press Golf Society season ended in great style at Templepatrick Golf Club on the Kingfisher Country Estate. McKinney Competitions was the sponsor of the day and was represented by Adrian Logan, Stephen Murray, Michael Maguire and Damian Dynes. The weather was good and the course in great condition – considering the wet autumn. Players were all competing for points in the last event of the season-long Race to Dunmurry competition, sponsored by Dunmurry Dental Practice. The Templepatrick event was won by Maurice Jay with a fantastic score of 33 points, noting that it was a day when points were hard to come by! The race-to-Dunmurry title was won by George Martin with 205 points; Neil McKnight was the runner up with 197 points in what was a very tight race all season that could have gone either way.

OLD INSTONIANS ASSOCATION DINNER The annual Belfast Old Instonians’ Association (B.O.I.A.) dinner took place in the Common Hall at RBAI on Friday 25th October. There was an excellent turnout, with almost 300 former pupils attending: some from as far away as Australia, U.S.A. and Canada. Also attending were the presidents from eight other former pupils’ associations, along with special guest of the evening, Olympic gold medallist swimming champion, Jack McMillan. B.O.I.A. president, Philip Seay, welcomed everyone to the dinner and the principal, Janet Williamson, reported on yet another fantastic year of sporting and academic success at the school. The president then gave an amusing speech and toasted the guests, which was responded – very wittingly – by Colin Barkley. The evening finished with the traditional singing of the school song.

Portadown Male Voice Choir joined church members and invited guests to commemorate William Tennent at Vinecash Presbyterian Church.
ULSTER HISTORY CIRCLE The Ulster History Circle unveiled a blue plaque to Rev. William Tennent at Vinecash Presbyterian Church in Portadown. William Tennent’s inspirational work in education in Pennsylvania helped create Princeton University. He worshipped at Vinecash Church and some of his family were baptised there. In 1718 they emigrated to America, where Tennent built the wooden school in Warminster that became famous as the Log College. More than sixty schools and colleges owe their existence to William Tennent’s example. He’s regarded as a pathfinder for the Presbyterian Church and for education in America. Rev. William Tennent died in 1746.

How my Paralysis Sparked an Interest in Medical Research At 21, Professor Denise Fitzgerald was diagnosed with a rare condition which caused inflammation and damage to her spinal cord. She was paralyzed and had to learn to walk again. She explained, “It was this experience that led me in my pursuit to understand why the damage in my spinal cord repaired so well, and why that doesn’t happen with multiple sclerosis (MS) and other neurodegenerative diseases.” Prof. Fitzgerald’s research into MS is set to benefit from a generous gift left in a Will that will greatly expand the scope and ambition of the research her team can undertake, working to understand how our brain tissue can become repaired after it has been damaged. This legacy gift will help to train the next generation of researchers and to push the boundaries of their research to help improve the lives of patients who are affected daily by a neurodegenerative disease. To find out more about the impact a gift in your Will to Queen’s could have, contact Louise at l.carey@qub.ac.uk or visit go.qub.ac.uk/legacy-gift. “I think people choose to leave a gift in their Will to medical research because of the profound impact it can have on their lives of patients, their families and carers.” Dr Denise Fitzgerald Professor of Neuroimmunology 173
