I must admit I wasn’t that surprised when I heard the news that local magician and TikTok sensation (he has over 16 million followers, apparently) Joel Mawhinney has been chosen to be the next Blue Peter presenter. He hails from Bangor and is the 41st host of the legendary children’s show. He attended our Influential Women of the Year lunch in May and the Ulster Tatler Awards in September, at which he picked up the Celebrity of the Year Award. Anyway, it struck me when I met him, and saw him perform on stage, that he certainly has star quality. Although he is a mere 25 years old, he oozes charisma and self-assurance. In fact, myself and my colleagues afterwards commented that we wouldn’t be surprised if he were to go far. It will be interesting to watch his career trajectory over the next few years.
