EDITOR’S LETTER
EDITOR: Christopher Sherry
Glory Days
DEPUTY EDITOR: Joanne Harkness EDITORIAL MANAGER: James Sherry
It was way back in September 2008 that the inaugural Ulster Tatler Awards took place. Recently I flicked through the awards supplement we published at the time. It features lots of well-known, fresh-faced attendees - it was 14 years ago after all. Among the celebrities there were James Nesbitt, Lady Mary Peters and David Humphries. Although I was somewhat star-struck on the evening I have fond memories of how fun and glamorous an event it was. This year’s awards take place on Thursday 8th September and are promising to be just as memorable. It is terrific to be back in St Anne’s Cathedral (we were last there in 2019). The building dates back to 1899 and is one of the most beautiful in the city. It has seen many historic events over the years including the funeral of Lord Edward Carson in 1935. In 1941 it was nearly destroyed completely when the area around it was bombed heavily during the Second World War. Having a dinner and awards ceremony in a working church presents its own challenges from a logistical point of view but I think it will be well worth the effort, given how special the space is. If you wish to attend the Awards turn to page 46-47 where you will find full details on how to buy tickets. As usual they are selling fast.

COLUMN August 2022
LIFE & TIMES EDITED BY KATHY CLUGSTON
Kathy Clugston is a freelance radio presenter. She chairs the long-running BBC Radio 4 programme ‘Gardeners’ Question Time’ and presents the weekly entertainment show ‘The Ticket’ on BBC Radio Ulster.
DO THE THING! This month, Kathy discusses taking the leap to start something new. A few months ago I bewailed in this column my ongoing battle with notebooks, scores of which lie in a disordered mess across my life. The upside of this chaos is that occasionally, while looking for the name of a plumber someone recommended or things I will need when I eventually summon the strength to go round IKEA, I stumble across a random scribble I had completely forgotten about. Sometimes it’s even legible, as was this one: Step 1: Do The Thing Step 2: Learn How To Do The Thing There was no accompanying note to say where or when I might have found this useful aphorism. I searched online for clues. I couldn’t find the exact phrasing but it seems to be based on a quote from Sophocles, who advised in 400 BC that “one must learn by doing the thing; for though you think you know it, you have no certainty until you try.” I don’t remember writing the motto down but I understand why I did as it chimes loudly with me. It’s how I’ve ended up doing most things, particularly my current job of presenting, as a non-expert gardener, a radio gardening programme. I wasn’t very good when I started, but I kept doing it and have learned how to do it better. Of course, I wouldn’t necessarily advise this approach for an airline pilot, say, or a brain surgeon. Some sort of course is probably advisable. I don’t expect Sophocles was advocating plunging into new and possibly dangerous territory without any preparation or knowledge, but rather reminding us that experience is the best teacher. I didn’t walk off the street and start hosting a radio programme, I have been in the business
for years, accruing what these days they call ‘transferable skills’. People of my age often complain that younger generations want everything to come to them instantly, that they don’t understand the concept of starting at the bottom and working their way up, serving their time etc. I don’t know how true that is, but I do know that nothing much good ever came without passion, resilience and bloody hard work. Too often, though, when we want to try something new - not just a job but an artistic pursuit, sport or hobby - we are paralysed by fear of failure and/or the need for permission. We might think that opera or yoga is “not for me” - well, who says so? Another easy trap to fall into is feeling that we can’t begin to do an activity until we have all the stuff. A friend of mine decided to take up hiking. He went out and bought the whole kit - top-of-the-line boots, clothing made of special wicking fabric, a moulded rucksack etc. - at no small expense, only to realise that his knees weren’t great and he found walking quite dull. Another friend suddenly wanted to learn to play guitar but rather than borrow one to see how she got on, bought an expensive model with all the accoutrements, only to find the metal strings really hurt her fingers and it was all rather more difficult than she had anticipated. It would have been better to ‘do the thing’ for a bit first. How many people have bought a new club thinking it will make them a better golfer? Or Moleskin notebooks thinking it will help them write that novel? Having the right kit can be important or even necessary, but often it’s just a nice reward once you’ve become somewhat competent and intend to continue improving. In the same way that we sometimes buy

clothes for the fabulous creature we aspire to be rather than what we will actually wear on a daily basis, it’s easy to fall in love with the idea of being another person - a dancer, a film star, an aerial acrobat. But if we ask ourselves: am I willing to put in the hours, try and fail many times, face the fear of getting it humiliatingly wrong and carry on anyway because it’s what I want and love to do? And the answer comes back YES, then wait no longer. Make like Sophocles and Do The Thing.
THIS MONTH’S OBSESSIONS: Quordle – The online word-guessing game Wordle on steroids. You have to find 4 five-letter words at the same time, in 9 guesses or fewer.
Borgen – The Danish political drama is back on Netflix, with Brigitte Nyborg now Foreign Secretary and in the throes of the menopause. Affirming to watch her win at politics while changing her top three times a day and plucking at stray chin hairs.
Eucalyptus or Mint Shower Gel – As an anosmic (someone with no sense of smell), this is a daily treat. It triggers the trigeminal nerve, which transmits messages of cooling, astringency and spiciness to the brain, giving a smell-like sensation. 26

ENJOY THE SUN SAFELY DR. PAMELA MCHENRY OF BELFAST SKIN CLINIC - ADVISES ON HOW TO STAY SAFE IN THE SUN.
Sun protection prevents skin ageing and skin cancer.
only one product to put on your skin, it should always be your sunscreen. Does wearing a sunscreen all the time cause low vitamin D? Vitamin D is produced through the action of sunlight on the skin and a limited amount is derived from our diet. Some people are concerned that regularly using sunscreen leads to low vitamin D. However, the evidence suggests the risk of getting vitamin D deficiency from everyday sunscreen use is very low. Is it alright to use a sunbed to get a tan before going on holiday to stop burning? No. Sunbed use increases the risk of skin cancer. The SPF achieved by using sunbeds equates to using a sunscreen with SPF of 2-4. How should I protect my skin? You should avoid tanning and burning at all costs, both from the sun and from sunbeds. The paler your skin, and the more moles you have, the more care you need to take. To protect your skin, you should seek the shade between 11 and 3 and cover up with clothing as much possible. Remember to protect your head, ears, eyes, and lips. Wear a hat and sunglasses and apply sunscreen frequently during the day. This will help reduce skin ageing as well as minimising the risk of skin cancer.
Dr Pamela McHenry is a Consultant Dermatologist and Medical Director of the Belfast Skin Clinic. She is passionate about preventing sun damage and helping people achieve healthy skin. Below she answers some of the questions she is frequently asked by her patients. What are the main factors which increase the risk of getting skin cancer? The main factors include: having a pale skin colour which burns easily; a history of sunburns; a high number of moles and moles which are unusual in appearance; a family history or personal history of skin cancer; sunbed use; and regular sunbathing. If I’m careful and don’t burn, is it ok to get a tan? It is important to avoid tanning as well as burning. Tanned skin is damaged skin. Tanning leads to skin ageing in addition to increasing the risk of skin cancer. If you want to look tanned, I would recommend using a fake tan. Do I need to use a sunscreen here in Northern Ireland? Yes, sunscreen should be applied every day to all areas of the skin not protected by clothing. Don’t forget the ears, neck and back of hands. What are the different types of sunscreen and which do you recommend? Sunscreens should block both UVA (star rating at least ****) and UVB (SPF at least 30, ideally 50). Studies have shown that people tend to use much less sunscreen than is used to calculate their rating in the laboratory. So the effective rating they have in everyday use is approximately 50 % of what it says on the tube! For this reason, I normally recommend using the highest factor available, usually factor 50. It’s important to find a sunscreen that you like and that suits your skin type. For example, if you have oily or acne prone skin you should use an oil-free sunscreen. If you need help choosing a sunscreen, have a look at the hand-picked selection on our online store, allskinstore.com. If there’s SPF in my foundation/moisturiser, do I still need a sunscreen? Yes. It’s important to apply sunscreen every day. If you have to choose

This year at Andrew Mulvenna Hair we are so happy to celebrate our 21st year in business and equally happy to celebrate our long relationship with the Ulster Tatler. From the beginning in 2001 the Ulster Tatler has always been there with us and throughout our business journey. These have included business events, charity events, launches, fashion shows, awards, collaborations and more. So this year it brings us great joy to announce that we will be the main sponsor for the 2022 Ulster Tatler Awards. Looking back on this time our paths have crossed with so many of the contributors, people and businesses that grace the pages and we hope to continue those relationships and like many build back better and stronger.

Northern Ireland’s star baritone, new vice-patron of Northern Ireland Opera’s Glenarm Festival of Voice, talks Gilbert & Sullivan, costume and cultural politics with Jane Hardy.
R
eviewers have praised Ben McAteer’s voice for its “noble, romantic tone” in Korngold’s Die Tote Stadt aria and referred to the “sweet heft” of his vocals as the lecherous Count Almaviva in The Marriage of Figaro. So how would he describe his rich baritone? “Gosh, that’s the first time I’ve been asked that. It’s quite versatile and I am able to sing a large variety of repertoire, modern or earlier.” He does folk pretty well too. Listening to McAteer singing The Star of County Down in Northern Ireland Opera’s Northern Songs series made during lockdown, his voice tells the tale via a kind of mellow brown sound. He adds: “It’s not just about the lovely lyric line. Colours are often useful to describe voices. I’m pegged as a dark baritone although that’s maybe not a term I’d use myself.” Ben McAteer (35) is from Newry, a place he still calls home. He started singing young. “My sister Rachel and I would put on shows for our parents, singing Do-Re-Mi.” Yet it wasn’t until McAteer hit his teens that he became aware that he had a genuine gift. “It’s funny, I sang at school, at Banbridge Academy and in the choir at Newry Cathedral. I was aware as a teenager that I could do things my peers couldn’t.” The first winner of the Glenarm Festival of Voice prize in 2010 reveals that he did well in an earlier singing contest. “I won a competition in Newry with a song called My Dog Spot. I had a little dance routine about him wagging his tail and that was when my acting chops got going.” Surprisingly, McAteer nearly became a chemistry teacher. The opera singer explains: “Yes, that was the plan. I studied the subject at St Andrew’s and enjoyed the golf. But, the singer says, he eventually felt his abilities “weren’t up to the task”. Having acquired the fallback degree, which gave him useful analytic skills, Ben McAteer chanced upon the Glenarm voice competition. “I’d just finished my first year at the Guildhall and through this I made good contacts, people like Kathryn Harries and David Gowland.” He also won and gained his first professional gig. “A group of five of us, 65
friends, were under the Northern Ireland Opera umbrella. That got me my first professional job as Papageno in NI Opera’s The Magic Flute the next year. Ollie (Oliver) Mears was director, heard me sing and offered me the part.” McAteer is a great Gilbert and Sullivan fan, and interpreter. He will be playing the Grand Inquisitor this summer in The Gondoliers (“my favourite role, although I love any Gilbert and Sullivan”), part of a tour for the international Gilbert and Sullivan festival. During Covid, the cultural semi-colon that paused a lot of arts work, the singer found new ways of operating. Initially, though, Ben McAteer didn’t want to sing at all. He says now: “It was horrific internationally, concerts were cancelled, I know nine out of ten musicians didn’t find work. They had mortgages, livelihoods. In the first lockdown, I didn’t want to sing and it took several weeks to get back on form.” He adds that he was lucky that there was work, digitally at first. This year he’ll be supporting Glenarm and hopes to head up from his home to what he describes as a magical place. “As vice-patron I am hoping to get to a couple of concerts at least, and also work with the young artists.” The three-day event fosters rising talent and culminates in a great concert. The atmosphere is relaxed but super-creative. Yet opera has sometimes had a reputation as being elitist and not for everyone. This cropped up recently in the House of Commons when Labour’s deputy leader Angela Rayner was accused of being a champagne socialist for having attended Glyndebourne. McAteer comments: “I do feel passionately that’s wrong. You see people at the opera for the first time and nine times out of ten they enjoy it. You see schoolchildren at performances. Operas like La Boheme are very accessible. The opera Rayner was seeing was The Marriage of Figaro, about the lower classes getting on.” He adds that in his experience, this residual snobbery is fading. “I think it’s getting better and is no longer for your toffs, with a lot of programmes about it on TV and stuff on Instagram. Anything that gets it into the zeitgeist is good.”

INTERVIEW
Ben McAteer is generally interested in politics and reveals that he has just been listening to Alistair Campbell and Rory Stewart’s rated podcast, The Rest is Politics. He’s engaged by the idea that contemporary opera might dip into the subject, including the international side of things. “We’d probably all be auditioning to sing Trump but I am not sure there’s enough orange make-up in existence.” Costume matters too in performance. Singers have some input, McAteer says, and operatic style has changed: “You might say you need to stretch your arm, so something is too restrictive. Gone are the days when the fat lady sings about dying but wasn’t believable, we have to act, be trim and during lockdown I exercised and dieted.“ While McAteer enjoys a contemporary approach to opera, he would draw the line. “I don’t think I’d say yes if the designer asked if I’d go on in my underpants.” Part of any operatic performance is the audience reaction. But audiences vary round the world. “The home audience is best. It’s my favourite place to play with the Ulster Orchestra or Northern Ireland Opera. We put a Mikado on with Scottish Opera a while ago and every night in the Grand Opera House in Belfast was incredible. There’s a generosity and warmth here and we love a good story.” McAteer relishes the whole repertoire, including contemporary opera. “I’ve done a Peter Maxwell Davies’ The Lighthouse about three men in a claustrophobic setting going mad. What I find with contemporary stuff is it can be scary and you rehearse for four to five weeks. It may be dark or sinister but there’s no feeling like it when you get it right. It’s more immediate music.” When he returns from tours and trips, Ben McAteer likes to chill out and walk his dog, Sam, a fox red labrador. “I tend to put my feet up and be quiet. In rehearsal, you may be with up to one hundred people, so it’s nice not to have to socialise.” McAteer’s uncut enthusiasm for his profession is clear. “Opera is emotional. I think my first opera was probably The Magic Flute. The voice can move people like nothing else can.” So it’s back to a question of the power of the human voice. The twelfth Glenarm Festival of Voice runs from August 26-28 2022 ends with a vocal competition. it features public recitals and events including three concerts broadcast by BBC Radio 3, and is hosted by the company’s Patron, Sean Rafferty. Tickets are available via the Northern Ireland Opera website www.niopera.com/ performances/12th-glenarm-festival-of-voice

GIRL ABOUT TOWN EDITED BY NUALA MEENEHAN
Croatia Here I Come!
Nuala Meenehan works in the media and is a leading model.
Woo Hoo! I’m off to Croatia on holiday this month with my girlfriends! It’s been three long pandemic years since my last proper break, in fact as I write this column, I’ve only two more sleeps to go! With a smattering of shock my holiday wardrobe planning hasn’t gone as smoothly as hoped. Without going into unnecessary detail, things have changed! I’ve had little sunlight due to constant periods of study for a lockdown Diploma, the constant wearing of trainers over this period has done something VERY strange to my feet! I’m not able to fit into ANY of my old swimsuits and can’t find a new one that doesn’t make me look like a squeezed tube of tooth paste! What’s happened with the sizing of clothes these days? But if i’ve learned anything in these last years and very much now, it’s that none of these things matter, so take me as I am Croatia, because here I come!
Dipping Dunkers Most of us know that sea swimming, dipping, dunking and splashing around in our local waters is officially a ‘thing’! I’ve lots of friends who in every weather take themselves off to the shores in Northern Ireland for their weekly dip! I’ve found myself having a growing urge to join these merry bands and take the plunge. On that short spell (two days!) of hot weather I headed to a well known North Down beauty spot by the sea with some water baby buddies for my inaugural dip! On disrobing I remembered that I was very over due a hair removal appointment, so apologies folks if you happened to see a woman breaking the sound barrier as she ran for the water in the Helens Bay late July! Twas me! Beach Babes Nuala Meenehan, Megan Dallat, Frances Burke.

Tag Heuer Presents The Tag Heuer Monaco Purple Dial Limited Edition Tag Heuer’s most daring collection, the TAG Heuer Monaco welcomes a new limited-edition timepiece with a striking purple dial. Born in 1969, the rule-defying square-shaped chronograph has kept its maverick spirit alive and thriving through the decades, with many statement and sought-after variations of its original blue dial. In 2022 the brand is releasing a never-seen-before edition of only 500 numbered pieces. The new TAG Heuer Monaco Purple Dial Limited Edition combines its unmistakable heritage with fresh and distinctive finishes. The 39-mm square case in fine-brushed and polished steel houses an elegantly imagined dial in a rich purple color. The dial gradient, from lighter purple in the center to darker purple at the edge, adds depth and sophistication to the piece, while the rhodium-plated indexes and hands with white Super-LumiNova® and the two black opalin sub-counters subtly enhance the unexpected smoky design. Connoisseurs of the TAG Heuer Monaco lineage might recognize a subtle parallel with the very early Heuer Monaco reference 1113B, the Chronomatic version launched at the beginning of 1969, as well as the transitional series - before what is known as the “McQueen” – and the reference 1533 Calibre 15. These pieces used a different dial finish with a metallic blue paint over the brass plate. Over time, the dials have shown a tendency to patinate from blue to a similar dégradé purple color, sometimes slightly faded in the center and darker around the edges. In the 2022 interpretation, TAG Heuer’s in-house chronograph movement, Calibre Heuer 02, is clearly visible through the sapphire case back, and features a customized oscillating mass, column wheel, and engravings, with purple details. It offers outstanding timekeeping performance including a power reserve of 80 hours. For an added special touch, the black alligator strap is also lined with purple on the inside and the case back is engraved with the piece’s number of XXX/500. With this vibrant new aesthetic, the TAG Heuer Monaco Purple Dial Limited Edition explores new design territories without losing sight of its distinctive heritage. Available from July 2022, the limited-edition chronograph will be sold exclusively in TAG Heuer boutiques, which includes the TAG Heuer Boutique in Queen’s Arcade, Belfast. Contact concierge@lunns.com or call 028 9032 9799 to learn more about limited-edition timepieces.

The Shopping Experience At Kildare Village Has Even More To Offer This Summer From a Smiley charity collaboration to Ireland’s first ever open-air art gallery and lots of live entertainment for all ages, Kildare Village is a destination to be discovered. This summer, DO GOOD by The Bicester Collection and The Smiley Company are embarking on a shared mission to support women and children. DO GOOD is The Bicester Collection’s initiative focused on supporting charities that promote and progress the self-empowerment of women and children, both locally and globally. This partnership is being brought to life at Kildare Village in Ireland. Celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, Smiley’s mission has always been to spread good news and the founding mantra of ‘Take the Time to Smile’ feels more relevant than ever. An instantly recognisable graphic icon, spreading smiles and positivity across the globe for half a century. Kildare Village’s guests will be smiling from ear to ear this summer, with a number of Smiley activities planned. Smiley-covered benches will be found throughout the Village, while guests will be able to follow the famous faces along the ground to the Smiley carts, as well as enjoying Smiley murals created by artists from the all-female Minaw Collective. Guests can also enjoy Smiley coffees and spot the famous icon on restaurant menus; donations will be made to the Village’s partner charity Barretstown when guests order dishes marked with a Smiley. Guests who are unable to enjoy the Smiley experience in person can send a smile with a bespoke Smiley postcard. The Smiley X DO GOOD capsule collection is designed to bring smiles to all the family, retailing between €4 to €80. 100% of the proceeds from all sales at Kildare Village will be donated directly to Barretstown. Following on from the success of the dedicated Minaw Collective ‘street art’ exhibition space in Kildare Village in 2021, Kildare Village is furthering it’s commitment to artistic talent in Ireland with Ireland’s first ‘Open Air Art Gallery’, showcasing new murals from 14 emerging and established female artists from the Minaw Collective. Holly Pereira. “This new and vibrant exhibition is a natural evolution from the dedicated space we had for the Minaw Collective artists last year” says Victor Biffi Rosano, Business Director at Kildare Village. “We love to inspire and delight our guests with new experiences so this year we wanted to evolve and bring the art to life creatively in the mall and go bigger, bolder and brighter for an artistic experience with a festival vibe for the summer months.” Taking its name from the Irish word ‘mná’, meaning woman, the Minaw Collective is a diverse group of artists from all over the world, each currently based in Ireland. Celebrating equality, diversity, and tolerance through the medium of street art, the artists exhibiting in Kildare Village showcase their work as an expression of empowerment among women artists. This summer, Kildare Village will be open until 8pm each evening and the shopping experience will be further enhanced with a calendar of summer entertainment. Get hands on with building block workshops, keep brains buzzing with the Junior Einstein science programme, or show off your strengths at the family fitness classes. All entertainment will run on Friday and Saturday from 12pm-4pm. The entertainment extends into evenings as the Village comes to life every Thursday from 4–8 pm, all summer long, with the help of DJs, along with pianists and jazz musicians. Soak up the summer sounds as you take in summer styles, bright colours, bold patterns, and sunny accessories from your favourite brands. Successfully treating headaches & migraines for over 24 years This month, Apex Headache Clinic Founder and Spinal & Headache Physiotherapy Specialist, Rebecca Nelson offers some interesting facts on headaches and shares how the clinic’s team of specialist headache physiotherapists treat and clear headaches and migraines GET CLEAR ON THE FACTS SURROUNDING HEADACHES
Headaches ruin lives At Apex Headache Clinic, Belfast, we know the devastating impact that headaches and migraines can have on people’s lives, leaving the person desperate to find a cure to relieve their pain. Tension and stress are frequently blamed as the cause of these headaches, which often leads to people taking painkillers on a daily basis. However, painkillers don’t provide a long-term solution. What many people are unaware of, is that there is often a physical cause for their headaches, which actually stems from their neck. The great news is that, in the vast majority of cases this can be successfully treated and cleared without the need for medication. Neck-triggered headaches and migraines are often the
Too many painkillers can cause headaches It is uncommonly known that excessive medication can actually make headaches worse. In fact, 50% of migraine sufferers will receive no relief from medication used to treat migraines in the first place. Of those patients who do respond to medication, they are very likely to become used to it and therefore, over time, the medication will become less effective. But the good news is that my Nelson Headache Approach™ has been shown to be a highly effective, drug-free method of clearing or significantly reducing headaches and migraines in the vast majority of cases.
result of poor posture, hours spent hunched over desks and computers, repeated heavy lifting or a previous injury. Sometimes there is no known reason why the neck became stiff and tight in the first place. The first drug-free headache clinic in Ireland Apex Headache Clinic opened its doors years ago, and people travel from many different countries worldwide for our specialist treatment, called The Nelson Headache Approach™. This approach is offered in no other clinics at this time. Along with my team of specialist headache physiotherapists, we have been successfully treating headaches and migraines for over 20 years and we’re very proud of our high success rate.
Poor pillows may be causing you damage At Apex Headache Clinic, we have witnessed repeatedly how poor pillows make headaches worse. Pillows are supposed to support the head and neck, and reduce compressive stresses on the structures of the neck whilst sleeping. However, many pillows are too soft or too flat and so headache sufferers may find they wake up with a headache the next day. To fight the war against poor

pillows, I have designed the Apex Sleepwell Pillow range, clinically proven to reduce neck pain and headaches in the majority of cases. Each pillow is uniquely designed in terms of thickness and firmness to match needs of sleepers according to their build, from children to teens, right through to mediumsized adults and larger builds. Headaches affect children too Parents often contact Apex Headache Clinic, after trying many other approaches, including consulting GPS, paediatricians, neurologists or opticians, with no relief. We offer hope to families who are at the end of their tether, thanks to our drug-free, specialist approach to clearing headaches and migraines in all ages. Treat pain at its source At Apex Headache Clinic, our motto is to always treat pain at its source. With the correct treatment, Apex Headache Clinic’s specialist physiotherapists should be able to clear your headaches and migraines, allowing you to enjoy life again. HEALTH MATTERS
“Treatment at Apex Headache Clinic has changed my life” What led you to Apex Headache Clinic? When I was in the office at work a customer came in and he could see that I was suffering with a migraine. He recommended that I try Apex Headache Clinic as he had attended for treatment, and it had helped him. I hadn’t heard of Apex Headache Clinic before and my GP had been giving me lots of medication to try to help with the pain, but it wasn’t successful. The customer in work gave me the details and I made an appointment and within a few weeks of starting treatment I could start to feel the relief.
51-year-old Caroline Woods from Ballyward, Co. Down had been suffering with migraines as long as she could remember. This was having a massive impact on her life and after trying everything, with no relief she visited Apex Headache Clinic in the hope of getting to the source of the problem. Here, she shares how the clinic’s unique regime of specialist manual physiotherapy treatment for migraines and headaches, called The Nelson Headache Approach™, cleared her migraines, meaning that she could finally start to enjoy life again. Caroline, when did your migraines begin? My migraines began in my early teens maybe even before that, they have always been there. Migraines ran in my family and when I would take a migraine I would have to go to bed. They often lasted for 2 to 3 days at a time and completely floored me. The migraines left me feeling sick and I couldn’t stand any smells, noises or bright lights. When I had migraines, I took painkillers and also injections prescribed by my doctor which I was able to inject myself with to try help with the intense pain. How did the pain affect your life? I would have to take off work and for those 2 to 3 days when I had a migraine, I would be
How has your life changed since having treatment? Immensely! For me, treatment has been life changing. It has helped in every aspect of my life and I don’t have to worry about getting a migraine. I am migraine free over 98% of the time and I only get the odd niggle of a headache which doesn’t stop me doing the things I enjoy.

What advice would you offer someone suffering from migraines? I would definitely tell anyone suffering with migraines to attend Apex Headache Clinic for specialist physiotherapy treatment. I would also say it is important to follow the advice that they give you and implement it in your life to get the maximum benefits and clear your migraines. Something Borrowed Wedding Dress Hire Ltd is an exciting new business opening on the Upper Lisburn Road, Belfast with the aim to provide a more sustainable and eco-friendly bridal dress option at a budget friendly price.
W
edding dress production is often overlooked when we begin to think of our carbon footprint, however the production of wedding dresses has a detrimental environmental effect across the world. Not only does production result in excess waste from scrap and misspend material but the chemicals used to manufacture our gorgeous white gowns has an adverse environmental impact. If you begin to think about how many dresses we see in shops or online, we can begin to fully grasp the magnitude of this issue. So, what can we do to help? We hope to make wedding dress hire a mainstream option to brides to combat this economic issue. By hiring a wedding dress from us, we begin to explore a sustainable alternative to cut down on our carbon footprint. The average UK wedding produces one third of a metric tonne of solid waste, so we can aim to counter this issue through bridal gowns with the hope that couples will begin to think about greener wedding options.
We are also striving to provide a wide range of dresses to accommodate all members of the public and communities. We currently stock sizes 6-22 and are ever growing upon our range as well as stocking dresses of all shapes, fits and style. We hope to deliver a relaxing and welcoming environment to anyone who desires to avail of our services. In order to do this we will be providing a top class, exclusive experience for those who wish to come and try our dresses, just the same as you would if you were to buy your wedding gown from a bridal store. We will soon be making a service available where the public can bring in their wedding dresses to sell to us as we focus our mission on preloved items. We are thrilled to be able to provide this service and we look forward to meeting all of our Something Borrowed brides.
With rising costs and increased budgeting as we enter further in to a cost of living crisis, we also believe that this service will allow our customers to wear their dream dress for a more affordable price. We believe that no bride should have to sacrifice an amazing dress of great quality, or even a designer dress due to their budget. Why buy a £3,000 dress when you could rent it for a fraction of the price? We also aim to fit all budgets by having low cost options as well as top end designer dresses such as Australia’s Sophia Tolli as a higher end option. Images by Illuminate Photography & Digital.

Jervis Wedding Photography: Different Perspectives from A Husband and Wife Team Paul loves being part of the Ulster Tatler cover shoots. He said, “It gives me the opportunity to take my skills and apply them in a different way from our main business of wedding photography. I can then take this cover shoot experience and weave it into our weddings.” Paul & Judith have been married for nearly 28 years and their wedding business is a two-person team. This gives a unique perspective to the wedding day as they can capture the same scenario from their own unique point of view. While Paul may be more involved in the direction and set up, Judith finds a different outlook and takes photographs from a more observational point of view. Ultimately, their aim is to capture memories that help their couples remember how they felt on their wedding day. Paul explains, “If you look at these two wedding images, both were taken of the same set up, but one was from Judith’s perspective while I was photographing from the front. This is a great example of how we work on a wedding day.”

“it feels like a full and magical circle that my book has now been given the same honour” EDITED BY KELLIE BURCH KELLIE@ULSTERTATLER.COM
Seamus Heaney Poetry Prize Guests recently gathered at the Crescent Arts Centre, Belfast, for the highly anticipated announcement of the winner of the Seamus Heaney Centre’s 2022 Poetry Prize for a First Collection. The Award Night, which was supported by No Alibis Bookstore,, took place in person for the first time since 2019. Four of the six shortlisted poets were in attendance to read from their shortlisted works, before Co. Kerry poet, writer and teacher, Victoria Kennefick, was named winner of the annual prize for her collection Eat Or We Both Starve, published by Carcanet (2021). The other shortlisted poets for this annual prize, supported by the Atlantic Philanthropies,, were: John FitzGerald (The Time Being, published by Gallery Books, 2021); Annie Katchinska (Aurora Town, published by Broken Sleep, 2021); Cynthia Miller (Honorifics, published by Nine Arches Press, 2021); Audrey Molloy (The Important Things, published by Gallery Books, 2021); and Leonie Rushforth (Deltas, published by Prototype, 2021). Guests on the night, such as poets Sonya Gildea and Stephen De Búrca, were joined by Seamus Heaney Centre’s director, Glenn Patterson, and this year’s award judges, Professor Nick Laird, poet and Seamus Heaney Professor of Poetry at Queen’s University; Dr Stephen Sexton, poet and lecturer in Poetry at the Seamus Heaney Centre; and acclaimed poet Jess Traynor. Speaking about her award, Kennefick said: “When I was little my mother met Seamus Heaney in a restaurant and told him about my ambition to be a poet. ‘But she already is,’ he assured her and signed a napkin which I still have. Many years later, with much trepidation, I submitted my application for the Seamus Heaney Summer School, my first experience attending a residential poetry course. It had a transformational impact on my writing life, learning as I did from the late, great and muchmissed Ciaran Carson, Sinéad Morrissey and Leontia Flynn. During the Summer School, I attended the ceremony for the Seamus Heaney First Collection Poetry Prize, won that year by Rachael Boast, so it feels like a full and magical circle that my book has now been given the same honour. ” As winner of the Poetry Prize, Kennefick received £5,000 and will participate in the Seamus Heaney Centre’s busy calendar of literary events. The Seamus Heaney First Collection Poetry Prize 2022 Award night was held on 23 June.

Ron Mueck Celebrated artist Ron Mueck recently unveiled his first exhibition to be held in Ireland. Located across all three galleries in The MAC, Belfast, the stunning showcase brings together seven of Mueck’s key works including Dead Dad (1997) and his monumental work In Bed (2005). During a special preview night, the exhibition was officially opened by Belfast Lord Mayor Tina Black and The MAC’s Chief Executive Anne McReynolds whilst Ron Mueck happily spoke to guests - such as fellow artists Colin Davidson and Graham Gingles, Ulster Museum’s Anna Liesching, NI Opera’s Cameron Menzies and Arts & Business’ Mary Nagele, about the inspirations behind his incredibly detailed and lifelike sculptures. Born in Australia and now based in the UK, Mueck began his career in film and television before moving into fine art in 1996 with a collaboration with Paula Rego at the Hayward Gallery. A year later, he created ‘Dead Dad’, a three-foot representation of his deceased father. This remarkable piece,
which is currently on display in The MAC’s Tall Gallery, is an excellent example of Mueck’s unique form of realism. From the fine lines on the sole of the foot, to each hair which was individually placed, this sculpture is mesmerising and unnerving all at once. The wonderfully curated exhibition also features the raw and emotive ‘Mother and Child’ (2003), which captures the first moment of contact between a mother and her newborn; Youth (2009), a powerful depiction of a young boy facing the prospect of his own mortality as he pulls up a blood stained t-shirt to reveal a stab wound; and Woman with Sticks (2009), a sculpture reminiscent of fairytales depicting a strong, energetic and very ‘real’ middle-aged woman. The piece that unquestionably was a major draw for guests was the larger than life ‘In Bed’. The female figure, tucked under a colossal duvet, exudes a palpable essence
of vulnerability and anguish. The large scale of this sculpture allows you to truly grasp how talented Mueck is. As well as intricate markings, the attention to detail is remarkable from the delicate eyebrows to the veins which almost seem to pulse beneath the skin. Ron Mueck is one of the most important artists of his generation and with this stunning showcase it is easy to see why. Mueck is a master of emotions, and from his small and fragile sculptures such as ‘Woman with Shopping’ (2013) to the big and bold creations, such as ‘Dark Place’ (2018), he provides unsettling personal mediations on universal experiences such as compassion, fear and loss. This is one powerful exhibition which I urge you to see during its stay at The MAC. The preview of Ron Mueck’s exhibition took place on 28 July 2022. The exhibition runs until 20 November.

Dreamachine Belfast launch It’s not often I’m lost for words. But after being invited to experience Dreamachine, at Carlisle Memorial Church, presented in partnership with NI Science Festival, I’m struggling to articulate the experience other than to say it was remarkable. Dreamachine, part of UNBOXED: Creativity in UK, is a powerful immersive experience which uses light and sound to explore the limitless potential of the human mind. Inspired by Brion Gysin’s 1959 invention - designed to be the ‘first artwork to be experienced with your eyes closed’ this much larger scale re-imagining of the Dreamachine was created by Collective Act, and brings together Turner Prizewinning artists Assemble, Grammy and Mercury nominated composer Jon Hopkins, and a team of leading technologists, scientists and philosophers. Having already mesmerised audiences in Cardiff and London, the experience works best when shrouded in a bit of mystery so I won’t go into too much detail other than to say Dreamachine is genuinely unlike anything I have ever experienced before. And, it was obvious when chatting afterwards, that everyone’s experience was different and totally unique to them. So this summer, open your mind, close your eyes, and step into the Dreamachine. Dreamachine launched in Belfast on 25 July and runs until 4 September 2022. Tickets are free and available to book at www.dreamachine.world/ tickets/

Sugar Coated
Ulster Tatler’s Chris Sherry visits Powerscourt Hotel.
A
s a child I spent several summers holidaying in Bray, Co Wicklow. During those long summers we were frequent visitors to Powerscourt Estate, House and Gardens. At that time the house was closed as it had suffered severe fire damage. The gardens, however, were still open and they were spectacular. I hadn’t been back since so, when I recently stayed in the nearby Powerscourt Hotel, I was keen to see if they were as special as I remembered them. I was not disappointed. The house has now been restored and the gardens are currently ranked number three in National Geographic’s Top Ten Gardens. It is not hard to see why – these magnificent gardens are set in 47 acres and have Sugar Loaf Mountain as a backdrop. Powerscourt House and Gardens are reason enough to visit this beautiful part of the world but, when you combine this with a stay in the neighbouring Powerscourt Hotel Resort Spa, you have the makings of the perfect weekend getaway. The Powerscourt Hotel is a five-star luxury hotel nestled in the heart of Co Wicklow. The hotel is on a pretty grand scale and on a short break there is plenty to keep you occupied. We only visited for one night so didn’t have time to fully savour all the hotel has to offer. Nevertheless, I can imagine that if you stayed for a few days you would find a return to the reality of a busy day at home to be
something of a shock – we experienced this after our short stay. Even if you haven’t been on a bicycle in a few years, I would highly recommend a cycle around the estate. The hotel provides complimentary bikes for residents’ use and they are a great way to get around. We cycled to view the tallest tree in Ireland and to visit the Japanese Gardens, all part of Powerscourt Estate House and Gardens. Ireland’s highest waterfall is also within the Powerscourt Estate and is a popular tourist destination. Nearby Enniskerry must surely be a contender for prettiest village in Ireland. It is just down the road from the hotel and is idyllic on a sunny day. It has a charming square and is brimming with character. There are also a few really nice spots for coffee or a bite of lunch. The town has clearly become quite gentrified; when we visited it reminded me of the sort of village you would see in Midsummer Murders. If you do happen to stay at the Powerscourt Hotel you must dine in the Sika Restaurant. It has fantastic views of Sugar Loaf and is quite simply one of the nicest hotel restaurants I have been to in several years. It is one of those spaces that you cannot help but relax in from the moment you arrive. It is very luxurious and the food was delicious. You will definitely feel like you have escaped to somewhere special there, with all the time in the world to while away.

As my favourite form of exercise is swimming I decided to pay a visit to the ESPA spa, which has a 20-metre pool. I went just before breakfast, at around 9am, and the pool was just the way I like it: nice and quiet. The spa area is extensive with a good gym and plenty of treatment rooms. Although you may be tempted to spend your entire stay lounging on an armchair, soaking up the views, I would urge you to venture down to the ESPA spa, even if it is just to chill in the hot tub. The Powercourt Hotel is the quintessential weekend getaway destination from Northern Ireland. It is just over two hours from Belfast (30 minutes from Dublin city centre) but feels like a world away. The hotel has just the right balance between indulgence (i.e. eating and drinking and generally lounging around) and healthy pursuits (i.e. country walks, cycles, spa treatments etc). The countryside in the vicinity of the hotel must be among the most attractive in Ireland. If you haven’t been before or haven’t visited in a while, treat yourself; you know you deserve it!

LISBURN SELECT TEAMS PLAY IN THE BLACKPOOL CUP Lisburn Castlereagh junior league representative teams made the journey over to the Blackpool cup over the May Day weekend. Both age groups u12s and u14s then showcased their skills on the football field over the next few days were they remained unbeaten in all matches. When both teams made their way to the their finals, normal time could not separate all teams and it was the dreaded penalties in their respective cup finals that was to seal their fate. The cup was the Premier Cup and both sets of kids can hold their heads high as they both gave their all to the very end. Many thanks to all the parents who travelled and to everyone else who helped out in any way. Also huge thanks to our league sponsor Briggs Equipment - NI / ROI and Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council. Tea For Two Ulster Tatler’s Joanne Harkness visits Galgorm to try their new afternoon tea menu – The Ruby Edit.
B
izarrely, for someone who isn’t a fan of drinking tea, I absolutely adore going for a spot of afternoon tea. That is because it is more than just the tea – it is the whole experience; the elegance, the indulgence, the surroundings and the company. I have tried Afternoon Tea in a number of places across the country, but on the top of my list is Galgorm, they have finessed the Afternoon Tea experience down to a fine art. Galgorm had recently launched their new afternoon tea menu – The Ruby Edit, so this was the perfect excuse to go back and try what was described as their most indulgent experience yet. I went along with one of my closest friends, so we had the opportunity to catch up, dress up and have a bite to eat all at the same time. Afternoon Tea at the Galgorm is served in the stunning River Room Conservatory, which was gleaming with sunshine when we arrived on a Sunday lunch time. We were instantly greeted by the gracious staff who showed us to our table overlooking the magnificent Maine River. At this point you are given a selection of loose-leaf teas to choose from, which includes everything from traditional black teas, to green teas and fruit & herbal blends. Tea is not something I would drink on the daily, but on occasions like this there is just something about drinking from the fine china that makes it a bit more special. We both opted for the peppermint tea as it is crisp and cool, which made it perfect for the summer weather.
As it was a scorching summer day we needed extra hydration, so we ordered some iced tea as well. I went for the raspberry & orange iced tea, while my friend went for the peach & lemon. They went down a treat – they were fruity and fabulously refreshing. The savouries came out first, which consisted of soup, sandwiches and a vol-au-vent. The delicious carrot and coriander soup came in a small tea cup making it the perfect size to whet your appetite. The sandwiches were a delightful selection of baked ham, cheddar & tomato relish, Coronation chicken and peppered beef, all of which were fresh and packed full of flavour. The chicken and tarragon vol-au-vent was a lovely addition, the pastry was flaky and buttery with a generous amount of filling. The star of the show when it comes to afternoon tea is certainly the sweet treats, they are always a sight to behold. This was certainly
the case with Galgorm’s sweet selection – they came presented in a jewel-handled, miniature set of drawers, with each bun and pastry looking like a work of art. I started with a buttermilk scone, which must have been fresh out of the oven as it was still warm. Of course I had it with strawberry jam first, followed with a dollop of rich clotted cream on top (the jam-first or cream-first debate will always have the nation divided). The first sweet treat I went for was the strawberry & basil mousse, which was creamy, yet vibrant – combining flavours I hadn’t tried together before, but really worked! The next thing to catch my eye was the raspberry & matcha tart, it looked almost too pretty to eat. The pastry was short and snappy, with a luscious filling. My favourite had to be the pink champagne macaroon, which oozed with a chocolate filling – a complete joy to eat. To finish I had the rosewater Turkish delight, which was the perfect bite-sized, jellied-jewel to end with. My friend and I were too full to eat everything, but we were kindly offered a to-go box. This was to the benefit of my fiancé who ate the remaining red velvet cupcake and cherry & coconut lamington when I returned home – he assured me they were very tasty! Now entering the third generation in the capable hands of Karen’s daughter Katie Kennedy, Fermanagh Cottage Industries has entered the digital age taking their business to a wider market via their social media and online shop. Why I love...
Enniskillen
Ulster Tatler speaks to Barbara Thompson from Enniskillen Golf Club... How long have you been living/ working in Enniskillen? I have lived in Enniskillen for 34 years, originally moving to the area to work as a Community Occupational therapist. I also ran my own clinic and taught sports massage at the Southwest college. Now retired, I’m able to relax and enjoy playing golf. Running “Get into Golf” for women in conjunction with Golf Ireland has been a great success with 32 new lady members over the last two years, so I have plenty to fill my time to avoid housework. What do you love most about Enniskillen? It has a lot going for it and the people here are so welcoming. I love the convenience of it. It is a very self-sufficient town with great facilities and of course, Enniskillen Golf Club is a gem in itself, situated in Castle Coole Estate beside the National Trust Property. Does Enniskillen have any hidden gems? There are so many hidden gems. The walk around the lake is so beautiful and you can hire out the Hydrobikes or take a water taxi. I recommend popping into Headhunters Barber shop and Train Museum or a visit to the Castle. Where do you like to dine and socialise in the area? We are spoilt for choice with great restaurants, bars and coffee shops. My favourite restaurant is 28 The Hollow, owned by Glen Wheeler. Other great places I enjoy are Francos and the Westville hotel. There are also numerous cafes in the town, but the Bees Knees and Rebecca’s are my top two. 110

Arrive as a guest, leave as family at Mahon’s Hotel Ulster Tatler speaks to Joe Mahon from Mahon’s Hotel... Can you tell us about the background of Mahon’s Hotel? Mahon’s Hotel began its journey back in 1883, when it was opened by Joseph Mahon. It started as a coaching inn when the stabling of horses, food provision and accommodation were secondary to the main business of farming. It has grown in size and focus over the years to become a community hub for locals and visitors to Fermanagh. He ran the hotel until 1951 when he died. The business was then taken over by his son Vincent Mahon until his untimely death in 1979. During Vincent’s time running the business it saw a significant period of growth. A major development was the removal of horse stables to make a restaurant with rooms above it in 1958. When Vincent died his son, Joe was studying in Manchester, preparing himself in Hotel Management. He returned home in 1982 to work alongside his mother. Mahon’s Hotel had always been a two star until 2005 when a major investment of 1.8million pounds was made. This happened after a bomb attack occurred in the hotel in 2000, where half of the hotel was completely destroyed. The hotel has since held a three-star rating. The hotel is now owned, managed and run by Joe, Paul and Aisling (all Vincent’s children). Throughout the years and the many changes those years have brought the hotel has always maintained its reputation for offering down-to-earth, homely accommodation with a friendly, personable welcome. Always at the heart of the hotel is the local community who dine and drink with us. The family are looking forward to the future of the hotel and have no intentions of letting this piece of history slip away, or indeed stay static.
IMAGINE MORE
What makes Mahon’s Hotel unique? As the history of the hotel would suggest Mahon’s Hotel is unique due to the family aspect. The hotel has been owned by and run by the same family for almost 140 years. It is believed this is oldest family owned, family run hotel in Northern Ireland and possibly the whole of Ireland (something which they are always interested to learn about). This rich ancestorial history can be found throughout the hotel. There are many familiar faces who frequent the hotel and these characters make it a place to call a home, away from home. Mahon’s Hotel offers live music every night of the weekend. Welcoming local artists who have been playing for many years, as well as new, emerging bands and singers. Often there are one off gigs and sessions. This makes for a lively atmosphere and draws a keen crowd of locals as well as visitors. This mix of regular customers, along with new makes for a unique hotel experience. For more information visit WWW.MAHONSHOTEL.CO.UK

Diversity NI: Providing excellence within interpreting and translation services in Northern Ireland With a reputation for accuracy, security and reliability through a continued commitment to both the public and private sectors, Diversity NI has grown to become one of the largest interpreting and translation services in Northern Ireland. Ulster Tatler speaks with Founder and Managing Director at Diversity NI, Paolina Hawthorne, on its continued growth and what it offers to both individuals and businesses across Northern Ireland. Paolina, tell us about Diversity NI? Language barriers are increasing, causing frustration for millions of people, as well as immense pressure for organisations. Imagine a world in which language and cultural barriers are no longer an issue - this is what Diversity NI offers. I set up Diversity NI, at the age of 26 - several years after arriving into Northern Ireland from Bulgaria. Fast forward almost twelve years and I have built Diversity NI to become one of the main players in language services in Northern Ireland and the only Chartered Institute of Linguistics exam centre in the country. The business is dedicated to opening the paths of communications between foreign national residents and organisations, investors and customers. This, in turn, offers opportunities for development of cultural diversity, integration into local communities, and employment and growth for businesses across the whole of Northern Ireland. We currently operate a register of over 700 qualified interpreters, offering services to thousands of clients in over 75 different languages. How can Diversity support businesses? We work with a wide range of businesses, charities and organisations, and major local employers to help non-English speaking residents access job opportunities, education, care and support. We also provide a specialised translation for labels of beauty products, policy and procedures, etc. Diversity NI has helped optimise the benefits to both business partners and their stakeholders by creating employment opportunities that have enabled migrant residents to utilise their professional services and expert skills and to encourage a rich cultural community within Northern Ireland. Diversity’s primary purpose was to offer interpreting services to businesses but by expanding this remit to include training and social inclusion, Diversity NI has been able to offer new career options for many non-English, bilingual speaking residents who now live and work in Northern Ireland, contributing to the local economy and community. Our register of interpreters, who partner with Diversity NI on a freelance basis, act as champions for the company by working directly within their own speaking communities, helping to influence positive change and promote successful outcomes for nonEnglish speaking residents living within Northern Ireland.
Paolina Hawthorne, Founder and Managing Director at Diversity NI.
Has the company evolved over the years? Very much so, and like many businesses over the past two years, we have had to radically adapt our business model, find solutions and educate both clients and our team in our new way of doing business. Offering virtual interpreting would never have been an option that we’d have considered before, however, during the covid pandemic, we introduced virtual interpreting and it’s been very successful – in 2021 we delivered over 2,000 virtual sessions. Born out of necessity, it has also introduced new opportunities to the business. In the virtual world, we now have access to a huge pool of linguists regardless of their location, and for our clients, we can turn around any immediate interpreting needs within a short time frame, avoiding the need for interpreters to travel to clients’ business premises. Virtual interpreting is now the new normal for Diversity, and it marks a real sea change within the language services sector. Due to the recent conflict in Ukraine and the rise in refugees fleeing to NI, wanting to help, earlier this year we took the decision to launch free Community Interpreting Courses to qualify Ukrainian Speakers based in Northern Ireland to provide Interpreting Services – the opportunity allows training so interpreters can help Ukrainian refugees navigate communication barriers when arriving here. To date, we have invested over £7,000 into the training and now have the highest number of Ukrainian interpreters on our register. What’s next for Diversity? Today, with our communities even more diverse than ever before, the need to communicate across languages and cultures is growing rapidly. Misinterpretation and cross-context communication can be costly and have profound consequences, especially in certain situations dependent on their gravity e.g. in medical or legal settings. Miscommunication can lead to loss of reputation, legal exposure, poor customer experience (leading to loss of sales) and even SEO failure. For this reason, clear, accurate and effective communication – between cultures, languages, disciplines, and industries – is an increasing priority. We aim to continue to grow, bringing those in both the public and private sector access to new languages, and to continue to provide training to allow those with an interest in language to become an interpreter and join our team. Ulster Tatler’s guide to indoor and outdoor flooring...
F
looring is one of the most important aspects of your home. As it takes up so much space, it has a significant impact on the aesthetic of your home. Flooring effects the way you experience your home and it can pull the design of a room together, making it feel cooler, warmer, cosier or completely luxe. However, by its very nature, by being underfoot, it is exposed to daily wear and tear. So, when considering the design of your floor, don’t forget to factor in the durability and practicality of the material. Different spaces have different flooring requirements. For example, kitchens see a lot of action, from spilled food and dropped saucepans, and so require a hardwearing covering. On the other hand, living rooms and bedrooms have a much more
relaxed pace and so in these spaces there is more scope to invest in more luxurious materials from soft carpets to colourful rugs. Flooring can pull the designs of different rooms together, creating a seamless flow throughout your home. In recent years, we have seen an increased interest in outdoor flooring, enhancing that sense of being connected to the garden with flooring that stretches from the inside out. Outdoor flooring is often overlooked and it shouldn’t be. From perfect paving and patios to trendy tiles and timber, there are plenty of way to extend your living space. Read on to find out more about local flooring experts who can help transform your home.

Current Flooring Trends 2022 Ulster Tatler speaks to industry experts on the existing flooring trends in 2022...
Wood Floor Warehouse “When looking at current trends in flooring, we have noticed that there has been a decline in people looking for grey flooring, the most common requests now, are for rustic hand scraped wide engineered boards, Luxury Vinyl Click flooring (LVT) and of course the ever-popular herringbone. There has also been a shift in the finish of a floor, gone are the glossy/ lacquered finishes, it has now been replaced by matt, oiled look, which look great in both a modern and traditional setting. We sell a variety of these products in a range of budgets so there is something for everyone!” For more information visit www.woodfloorwarehouse.co.uk
Ceco Wall-to-wall tiling is a classic for flooring and this trend continues in 2022... Infusion was born from the recovery of a mountain hut. An unusual mix of wood and concrete. A collection inspired by the industrial chic style which, with its three different shades, lends itself well to different environments, from the most modern to the most classic. Thanks to the concrete that is intertwined with wood, it will be possible to create continuity between floor and wall covering, thus becoming a versatile and easily combinable series, while always maintaining its unique personality. For more information visit www.cecoproducts.com
Armatile : “In previous years we have seen a great focus on stone effect tiles and while they are still very popular in the industry, we are seeing other trends come to the fore. At the most recent Cersaie World Tile Fair held in Bologna, Italy the desire to bring unique shapes and nature into the home was unmistakeably the two leading trends among tile manufacturers. Further to this, strong colours that provide a comforting warmth and complement a room’s colour scheme are receiving more attention in design circles.” For more information visit www.armatile.com

The return of the holiday feeling Give yourself a reason to enjoy the trip back from your break. It’s the sun and the change of pace that really make a summer holiday, the smell of the suntan lotion and the build up for a couple of weeks before that really makes it exciting. A week in and things tend to have become routine and of course a couple of days before departure that feeling of ….time for home. It may be relief after a busy break, it may be disappointment as the holiday ends. But for many there is a genuine pleasure at the thought of getting home and back to where we feel most relaxed and composed. We spend time, effort and of course money on making our homes a place to enjoy, and when we get it right - it really is. A break is something to really look forward to but knowing how much we love our homes can be much more rewarding in the long term i.e. the other 50 weeks of the year! In some sense the process of designing and installing a kitchen or bedroom is like a break. There is excitement, decisions and of course, so much choice. The travelling may seem like a chore, much like the install process but the efforts are worth it. What’s more with your home, once you get there and settled in, you don’t need to worry about the return trip. Enjoy coming home with Alwood kitchens and fitted furniture
Quooker - The Ultimate Kitchen Appliance
For more information, visit www.alwoodkitchens.com
When it comes to the kitchen, we want our appliances to work hard for us, delivering convenience, safety, sustainability and other benefits. When it comes to your kitchen tap, Quooker has you covered. As the original and only true 100-degree boiling water tap brand on the market, Quooker leads the way when it comes to innovative technology and design. Quooker is inherently green, providing a more sustainable alternative to a traditional kettle. The average kettle is responsible for using 2,200 watts to boil 1.7 litres of water. Often used multiple times throughout the day, this kitchen appliance expends huge amounts of energy. Comparatively, Quooker taps use very little electricity. Thanks to their advanced tank technology, it only takes 10 watts to keep water at 110°C. Users can enjoy instant boiling water, alongside reduced energy bills. Quooker taps only boil the exact amount of water needed, whether for a single cup of tea or a large pot. Unlike other kitchen mixers where water heats up gradually, Quooker’s COMBI tank ensures a far quicker delivery of hot water when needed, limiting water wasted. Safety is also at the forefront of Quooker’s design. Look to its inbuilt safety mechanisms to prevent accidental use, red light signals to alert users of water modes, cool-touch spout casing and spray technologies that deliver aerated flows rather than a steady stream. As Quooker taps are static objects, they cannot be tipped or spilt, whilst delivering precision pouring. Quooker is a sound investment for a secure, safe and stylish kitchen. For the most useful kitchen appliance around, look to Quooker. For more information visit www.quooker.co.uk. 132

Make a difference to a child’s life Action for Children is dedicated to finding the best foster carers to look after the most vulnerable children in our society. Whilst the fostering application process is a commitment, it allows time to get to know carers inside and out because young people deserve the best care possible. Every child and young person is unique. Foster carers are, too. That is why Action for Children places such an emphasis on finding the best possible match between a child and a family. Doing this builds strong relationships that last. Fostering Team Manager, David Montgomery, says: “The matching process is looking at you as a family and how a particular child could fit into your circumstances of life.” When joining the Action for Children family, foster parents will be supported every step of the way. As well as being assigned a dedicated fostering social worker, they will get to know the whole service team, from administrative staff to support staff. They also have access to a 24/7 helpline and comprehensive training to ensure they are equipped with all the skills they need. David says: “It’s our role to provide you with all the training and support necessary for your growth and development.” The team at Action for Children get to know the children and their carers as individuals; this allows the service to provide wrap around care for the child and the whole foster family. The organisation also runs regular support groups for carers and organise family outings. These outings allow foster carers a space and opportunity to interact with others who know what they are going through. Fostering with Action for Children is very flexible. Whether you have the ability to welcome a child into your home on a full-time basis or for planned
