Recently renovated, Rochavau is a mere 300m from some of Portugal's most breathtaking beaches.

"A stone's throw away from the beautiful beaches of Amado and Tres Irmaos, Rochavau offers a relaxed yet sophisticated environment to enjoy your holiday."

The team at Rochavau has a passion for what they do and the beauty of their surroundings. That is clear from the moment you arrive at this hotel. Located in the heart of Algarve, nestled between the crystal-clear beaches of Vau and Rocha, Rochavau opened its doors to the world so they can welcome their guests the way they know and love. General manager Joao Gomes, who has experience of the hospitality industry in Northern Ireland, has now relocated back home to join this project and he believes that the hotel's location, a stone's throw away from the beautiful beaches of Amado and Tres Irmaos, is the perfect destination to take a break from the dull and rainy weather we are all so used to in Northern Ireland, especially over the winter months. A standing 15% winter discount code has been launched on their website rochavauhotel.com - to celebrate Joao's connection to Northern Ireland and it seems to be the perfect excuse for a beach getaway this winter. "That you may fall in love with us and the Algarve!" enthuses Joao. Don't lose the code: WINTERSUN

EDITOR’S LETTER

THE NUMBER ONE WIG SPECIALIST IN IRELAND

Visit Belfast

WIG & HAIRPIECE BOUTIQUE HAIRLOSS CLINIC

It is terrific to see Belfast city centre buzzing again. Most weeks there is, more likely than not, something of interest happening: whether it’s major sporting fixtures, business conferences or music concerts, it seems that Belfast is becoming a ‘go-to-destination’. I’m a big fan of smaller venues and there is no shortage of those either. In the last few weeks I have been to the Mandela Hall to hear author Jon Ronson being interviewed by Kathy Clugston, American singer Julie Byrne in the Black Box and our very own Arborist in the Empire Music Hall; all extremely talented individuals who were really worth seeing. To help get me in the Christmas mood, I also nipped along to the Belfast Christmas Market and then headed round to a recital of Handel’s Messiah by The Ulster Consort in St Malachy’s Church. I may be slightly biased, having been born and bred in the place, but I do think Belfast is a terrific city for a short break. Let’s face it, our weather’s not the best but we’re a friendly bunch and the city has a lot going on at the moment. I honestly believe that our quality of life here would be hard to beat. Furthermore, in 2028, we will hopefully see the Euros come to our city with five matches scheduled to take place here. Get your hotel room booked now. Merry Christmas!

LIFE & TIMES

Kathy Clugston is a freelance radio presenter. She chairs the long-running BBC Radio 4 programme ‘Gardeners’ Question Time’ and presents the weekly entertainment show ‘The Ticket’ on BBC Radio Ulster.

EDITED BY KATHY CLUGSTON

Let’s Get Quizzical This month, Kathy Clugston discusses meeting her childhood hero, Sarah Greene, and how Northern Ireland could be the new location for filming quiz shows. Anyone doubting Northern Ireland’s cultural clout should survey a list of our music and arts festivals. The grandmammy of them all is the Belfast International Arts Festival - 61 years old this year - and in the capital alone this year we’ve had AVA (Audio - Visual - Art), Belsonic, Belfast Book, Belfast Film, Brilliant Corners (jazz), Cathedral Quarter Arts, CS Lewis, Eastside Arts, Emerge (dance music), Hit The North (street art), Imagine, Outburst Queer Arts, Look North, Maritime, Mela, Sound of Belfast, Tradfest, Vital, XR (virtual reality) and probably a few more. These - and the others across the country - are a wonderful testament to the talent, skills and passions of the people who live here. A couple of weeks ago I attended the Belfast Media Festival, crammed with events and panel discussions about film, TV, radio, podcasting, animation and gaming. It’s aimed at people working or aspiring to work in the industry, from students and freelancers to producers and commissioners, but anyone can attend. There are people there you don’t usually get to see at close quarters, like the Head of BBC Three, the Disney+ commissioners and the creators of the TV series Blue Lights. I chaired a panel about TV quizzes and got to meet one of my childhood heroes, Sarah Greene.

Sarah has had an incredible career on TV from Blue Peter to Going Live to Ghostwatch and this year co-hosted a new BBC quiz show called The Finish Line with Roman Kemp. It was filmed in Belfast and aired in August and September 2023, produced by two companies, Potato TV and Nice One Productions. Their managing directors are both from Northern Ireland and have long wanted Belfast to be a hub for ‘Quiz’, as industry people call it, in the way that it has become for scripted drama and film. Nice One brought the 51-yearold BBC stalwart Mastermind to Belfast a few years ago and for Potato, who make ITV’s The Chase among other things, filming here was always part of the The Finish Line proposal. TV quizzes have always been popular - University Challenge has been on the air since 1962 - but for a time in the 1980s and 90s shows like Family Fortunes, Wheel of Fortune, Bullseye and 3-2-1 were regarded as pretty naff, as were its hosts. In 1998, Who Wants To Be A Millionaire really changed the game and was sold all over the world. The search is always on for the next big ‘shiny floor’ money-spinner. It’s not easy to come up with a new quiz format. Big companies like Potato TV have a room full of people beavering away all year round; fewer than 1 in 100 ideas make it to the development stage and even if they go

further, there’s a high turnover as formats and hosts are tried, tested and quietly disappear. Equally valuable though are lower-key teatime favourites like Pointless and The Chase, which are still ‘appointment-toview’ (apparently ITV gets more complaints when The Chase is dropped for sport than about anything else), and the more ‘intellectual’ ones like Only Connect are still as popular as ever. Being a quiz show host is now on every celebrity’s to-do list, although, as Sarah Greene attests, it’s much harder than it looks. You need to be really interested in the contestants

as well as able to read a high volume of questions out loud qualities which elude a surprising number of people. And the schedule is tough: The Chase, for example, records three episodes a day, five days a week on a month-on, month-off basis. Sarah gets through the long days with the help of caffeine, bananas and the crew, who she says are her “new Belfast family”. She and Roman try to guess who’s going to win each show and constantly try to make each other laugh. It’s just been announced that a second series of The Finish Line will be filmed here in January so they must be doing something right!

THIS MONTH’S OBSESSIONS: TIME – A 3-part drama by Jimmy McGovern & Helen Black about three inmates in a women’s prison. They each have their own problems - on the inside and out - to negotiate. Brilliant performances from Jodie Whittaker, Bella Ramsey, Tamara Lawrance and Siobhan Finneran as the prison chaplain. On BBC iplayer.

lives. Favourite episodes include Sir Paul McCartney, Lucy Prebble (playwright and co-writer of the TV series Succession) and Margaret Atwood. On BBC Sounds. GINGKO BILOBA - I was reminded about this supplement in a podcast on brain health. Some studies show it may help with memory loss in certain circumstances although the extent is unclear. Am popping them anyway and hoping for the best (always check with your doctor).

THIS CULTURAL LIFE – John Wilson hosts an in-depth conversation with people of note about the cultural events that have shaped their 18

Led by Daniel and Angus Clarke, Ross’s has built its reputation on sales of Irish art, antiques, quality furniture, high-end jewellery, gemstones and watches. Following on the success of Paul Yates’s September-long ‘Artist in Residency’ at the Gleneagles Townhouse Hotel, Edinburgh, special edition giclee prints of his original works are now available at BRADBURY ART, BELFAST. A bride and groom levitate above a oneeyed stone anvil. The groom holds a die in his right hand, each of its exposed sides reveal a black spot. The tail of a black cat draped about the groom’s shoulders forms a tie. The bride wears a swan as her wedding veil and carries a bouquet of Burning Bush saxifrage. In the top left hand corner a crescent moon and stars echo a similar device on the interior ceiling of St. Andrews’ town hall, Fife, Scotland. This intriguing painting freezes in time a scene from a mystery play the artist has enacted deep in his imagination. Lord Glentoran Patron

ST. BRIGID’S GAC 25TH ANNIVERSARY

Kate Nicholl and Fergal Sherry.

St. Brigid’s GAC, Belfast celebrated their 25th Anniversary with a celebratory gala dinner at the Europa Hotel for over 500 guests, including Fionnuala Murphy, Antrim LGFA Chairperson, Debbie Murray LGFA and Seamus McMullan, incoming Antrim GAA Chair, who all enjoyed an evening of memories and craic. The club was founded in Dec. 1998 by Dermot Dowling, Conor McSherry and a group of likeminded parents who wanted to meet a demand for a local GAA club in the Malone area. The club would like to thank all of those who helped make the night happen including the brilliant MC, Mark Sidebottom, the organising committee, the staff at the Europa hotel, the superb Irish dancers from the Breslin McLaughlin School of Irish Dance and the wonderful band Matrimony who ensured that the dance floor was packed all night. A special mention for Stephen McKay who co-ordinated the photo loop on the night, taking guests on a journey down memory lane, and the club’s very own Declan Lawn who produced a highly emotive video showing just how far the club has come and the people that make it what it is today. Last – but most certainly not least – a massive thanks from the club to all those who attended and made the night such a special one. 40

HONOURS

Royally Rewarded This month Ulster Tatler features a selection of photographs from those members of the community recognised in the King’s Honours.

DR GARY MITCHELL MBE

JOHN BENNETT MBE

Dr Gary Mitchell attended his investiture on 27th October 2023 from the Princess Royal at Buckingham Palace. He was accompanied by his wife Claire Mitchell who is the finance manager at Ulster Rugby and his son Zach who is a pupil at Killinchy Primary School. Dr Gary Mitchell was awarded an MBE in the King’s Honours List 2023 for services to nursing and dementia care and he is presently a reader in nursing education at Queen’s University Belfast.

John Bennett received his investiture at Windsor Castle on 24th October 2023 from the Princess Royal, Princess Anne. John is pictured with his daughter Siobhan and son Mark. John was awarded an MBE in the King’s New Year Honours List for services to Television and Radio Broadcasting. John joined the BBC in 1965 and has presented music, entertainment, sports and current affairs programmes for almost six decades. Alongside Gloria Hunniford, John launched BBC Radio Ulster on New Year’s Eve in 1975 and is the head of the station’s family. John was also recently inducted into the Irish Music Rights Organisation Hall of Fame in Kilkenny.

ROISIN MARSHALL OBE Chief Executive Officer of the Council for Integrated Education (NICIE), Roisin Marshall was awarded an OBE in the King’s Birthday Honours list in June 2023 for services to Education and to Community Reconciliation in Northern Ireland. She received the award from the Princess Royal on the 11th October 2023 at a ceremony in Windsor Castle, which she attended with her family. Roisin graduated from St Mary’s University College, Belfast and worked as a teacher for 15 years in Primary, Post Primary and Special schools. She initially joined the Council for Integrated Education in 2002, four years after the signing of the Belfast (Good Friday) Agreement and was motivated to join NICIE following her struggle to get her son into an integrated school. There she began working with parents’ groups to help them establish new integrated schools and transform existing schools to integrated status. The Agreement had declared integrated education to be an essential aspect of reconciliation and its 25th anniversary was marked in April 2023. Roisin developed one of the first Shared Education Projects in the North Eastern Education and Library Board where she worked with small rural primary school partnerships. Roisin rejoined NICIE as CEO in 2016. She supported the Integrated Education Bill and subsequently the Act (NI) 2022, which reformed the legislation applied to integrated education and established a duty to not only ‘encourage and facilitate’ but also to support integrated education. 48

INTERVIEW

Award-winning actress, Kerri Quinn, known for her work in Hope Street and Coronation Street, talks about her daughter’s talent, the Northern Irish accent and north Belfast, with Jane Hardy.

A

Full of Hope

sk star of screen and stage, Kerri Quinn, (implausibly 41), whether she prefers acting in the theatre or on TV, and the lead in Hope Street answers, “They’re so different. With film and telly, you have the get out of the edit room. We always said that when I was on Coronation Street, but with theatre you have to get it right first time.” She adds: “I don’t know how many times I’ve been in something when they have got the casting or timing wrong but you can edit it.” Quinn certainly wasn’t miscast in the recent Lyric Theatre production of Gary Mitchell’s savage drama, Burnt Out, about the long shadow of sectarianism. She played a suburban wife who is determined to fight the prejudice tightening as the July bonfire grows too near her perfect sitting room. The denouement was genuinely shocking, with a murder and red light suffusing the stage like blood. One critic described her as a modern Lady Macbeth, wielding a weapon against her savage brother-in-law, who had hit on her with enthusiasm, and dominating her weak husband. She laughs at the thought, but doesn’t accept the description. “I don’t read reviews, not even at the end but happened to see this one. I wanted to reconnect with theatre, although it’s terrifying. I hadn’t worked with Jimmy (Fay) who directed this for a while. He’s collaborative, which is brilliant, so you have input and it was a great experience.” Mitchell is noted for his sweary text, although Quinn says this isn’t quite the whole story. “Gary Mitchell would say he doesn’t put that many swear words in and it’s the actors who add them. I put my hands up to that.” Kerri Quinn’s role as Sgt Marlene Pettigrew in the popular TV cop show Hope Street, set in Belfast, is now on its third series. In this, she plays a gay chief detective and channels her inner Sarah Lancashire. Apparently, and this is an exclusive, we need to watch episode ten in this series as there just might be a question mark over Pettigrew’s happy ending. But of course, professional that she is, Quinn will

not confirm or deny as soap storylines are a more closely guarded secret than anything in national security. We laugh at this, noting it’s incredible that in Last Tango in Halifax and Happy Valley, Sarah Lancashire actually played Raquel, the dumb blonde barmaid, in Coronation Street for many years and is now one of the best character actors around. Of course, Quinn has done her own Coronation Street time too. She played Vicky Jeffries, Robert Preston’s girlfriend, for over a year and thoroughly enjoyed the experience, although it was hard work. “In soaps you do two to three episodes together, and it’s very hard work.” At first, Kerri was in a hotel near Manchester. “But then we moved to the house of an actor on the soap which was much nicer, more home-like. “The ‘we’ refers to Kerri and her daughter, Libby, who she tries to take with her when she’s working. A single mother, Quinn is very proud of the eleven-year-old who already shows she’s an apple that hasn’t fallen far from the mother tree. “She’s got the bug, has done a film and other bits and pieces.” In fact, when just seven years old, Libby tried out for the film Nowhere Special starring James Norton, along with her experienced mother, and it was the daughter,

not mother, who got the call. And the role. Kerri Quinn also got into acting early, while still at school, St Joseph’s in north Belfast. She says she was an extrovert initially but then became quiet. “I was a late developer in various ways,” she laughs, talking about the old trick of putting tissues in one’s bra. There was also a serious reason her mood changed, to do with the family’s tragic loss of her baby brother, Kevin. “I wasn’t old enough to remember him, although my older sister Roisin was. But he died aged three and it must have affected me.” Happily, after a period of time, the Quinns welcomed another son, Gerard, into their home, the new baby of the family. “He isn’t in the business but is one of the best mimics I know, he can do everybody.” Talking about her family background, Quinn is animated, fond. “My dad’s a spark and the youngest 65-year-old around. He is amazing.” She has recently bought their house and lives in the same part of town she grew up in, the north side. Encouraged to follow her dream, Quinn trained locally and has had the most successful career since, being rarely out of work. “My training was local, studying performing arts at Belfast Met and Queen’s. After that I swore that I would never write another essay again so went straight into the rat race of trying to get work.” We discuss the way Northern Ireland has such talent in the arts and she says it is great but puzzling. “The Belfast accent has been unheard on TV until recently, that much I know. On Coronation Street, Charlie Lawson, for example, doesn’t talk as broad as his character, Jim McDonald. In Hope Street, Kerri Quinn dominates the line-up and does a mean line in personal trauma. Having seen her come unstuck with her girlfriend, one can’t but become curious about the outcome. But as always, TV soap plotlines are protected like the Crown jewels, which in a sense they are. “I shouldn’t say, but look out for episode 10. That’s when it all happens.” Or doesn’t, but Quinn who is a consummate professional, won’t do any big reveal other than to say that things between the women may not end as rosily as we’ve been led to expect. Yet meeting Ms Quinn is a fun experience, with a lot of laughs punctuating the conversation at a city centre café. The topics discussed ranged from the dark side of the internet and how to protect children to Christmas (which she loves) and to the arts community of north Belfast. “My sister and I are living in what was the family home and it’s great. We’re not far from that great pub in the area, the Chester, where I sometimes enjoy a drink, and near the

I wanted to reconnect with theatre, although it’s terrifying. I hadn’t worked with Jimmy (Fay), who directed this, for a while. He’s collaborative, which is brilliant, so you have input and it was a great experience. great Cavehill.” In terms of what she’d like from Santa, apart from a break from a fairly punishing work schedule, Kerri Quinn would like a rosy future for herself and her talented daughter. It looks like Mr Claus is responding in the affirmative, with more Hope Street to come and a new film in the pipeline.

GIRL ABOUT TOWN Nuala Meenehan works in the media and is a leading model. Ice Flower Brethel Dress, Rio Brazil Victoria Square, Belfast.

Time to bring out Your Dark Side Hooray! The fashion set has declared that BLACK is most definitely BACK! And not just for this winter, folks; the much-welcome return to the darkside will continue our fashion inspiration well into 2024. Even the red carpet went black at the CFDA’s, America’s Fashion Industry Awards last month. Black dominated the catwalks of Givenchy, Gucci, Bottega Veneta, Prada and Ferragamo with its timeless refinement, winning back the hearts of A-listers and the fashion elite. For divine inspiration, look no further than Dolce & Gabbana SS24. Take note; this isn’t about the re-return of the black dress; this is head-to-toe black! Black, on black, on black; black jeans with black boots; black midi skirts with big black knitwear; topped off with a long black coat! No need to panic if you’re a colour addict; with a totally black outfit, it’s easier to casually wear an accessory with bright colours, like a bag or neon-pop boots, or a simple sprinkle of statement earrings or necklace. Find your dark side.

EDITED BY NUALA MEENEHAN

Age is more than a number! At 58-years-old and with a modelling career spanning 40 years, I feel privileged to not only be working more than ever, but to have been more or less at the right place and at the right time in terms of age. In fact, based on the increased trend of even greater age inclusivity, my career as a model might be about to reach new heights! I’ve been aware that, more than any other industry I’ve worked in, age was a fashion industry issue. Not that long ago, any model in their 40s saw work simply dry up, unless it was a commercial for stair lifts or incontinence pants. In my forties, I was arguing about the relevance and spending power of my age group to clients. The great news is that there is progress. The growing trend for inclusivity among women and men of all ages is growing. This year, Vogue Philippines made headlines when it revealed 106-year-old tattoo artist Apo Whang-Od as the cover Charlotte star of its April 2023 issue. Whang-Od Rampling. set a new record for the oldest model to appear on a Vogue cover, beating Judi Dench, who appeared on British Vogue at the age of 85. But she is not alone. More women with silver hair and - dare we say it - wrinkles are appearing in exalted fashion images. Luxury brand LOEWE used Dame Maggie Smith, 88, to star in its latest handbag campaign. Charlotte Rampling, 77, is currently fronting a campaign for MASSIMO DUTTI, while Dame Mary Berry is working with Burberry. In 2022, 101-year-old businesswoman and style icon Iris Apfel launched a capsule collection with beauty brand Ciaté London. Iris Apfel. The hope is that we have an industry and society that now better represents and, most importantly, normalises more mature age groups. As for me, Belfast today, the catwalks of Milan and Paris tomorrow! Happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year! Well, folks, here we are, another year nearly over. It’s been a fantastic year. Wishing all our fabulous readers a very merry Christmas and a peaceful new year! See you the other side, Nuala xxxx 64

Meet Your Surgeon - Dr Kevin McDonald of Tir na nOg Clinic Welcome to Tir na nOg Clinic, a family-run establishment specialising in hair transplant surgery. At the forefront of the clinic is Dr. Kevin McDonald, a highly skilled and dedicated surgeon with an unwavering commitment to his craft. Hailing from Baldoyle in Dublin, Dr. Kevin pursued his medical education at the University of Galway (then UCG), where he completed his studies in 1999. His expertise lies in cardiothoracic surgery, the field he delved into after graduating.

Restore your hair and confidence like you never lost it

During his time in Galway, fate intervened, bringing Dr. Kevin together with his now-wife, Natasha, who was pursuing engineering studies at the same university. After obtaining his medical degree, Kevin initially embarked on his professional journey in the UK, where he and Natasha spent five transformative years. It was during this period that they tied the knot and started their family. In 2005, an opportunity arose in Dr. Kevin’s specialisation, beckoning him back to his beloved Ireland. Eager to return home, the family embraced this chance, leading Dr. Kevin to practice surgery at a number of prestigious hospitals, including the Mater Private and Blackrock Clinic, over the following decade.

Surgical and non-surgical hair loss treatments provided by an experienced surgeon with the focus of achieving a natural look. We are a surgical hair loss clinic in Ireland, owned and run by an Irish surgeon.

However, the year 2014 proved to be a pivotal moment in Dr. Kevin’s career trajectory as an increasing fascination with hair transplant surgery took hold. Determined to explore this innovative field further, Dr. Kevin committed himself to extensive training, thus embarking on a transformative journey to become a hair transplant surgeon. In 2015, driven by a resolute vision, Dr. Kevin made the bold decision to leave his position at Blackrock Clinic. With the support of his wife Natasha, he redirected his skills and expertise towards establishing Tir na nOg Clinic. Since its inception, Tir na nOg Clinic has flourished, catering to the needs of its clientele and relocating to its bespoke premises in 2016. Dr. Kevin is not only a fountain of knowledge in his field but also a passionate advocate for his patients. Frequently asked why he chose to transition from major surgery to hair transplant surgery and running his own business, Dr. Kevin explains that his decision was multifaceted. From a logical standpoint, he recognised the declining demand for cardiac surgery due to the advent of cardiac stents, while hair transplant surgery has experienced a consistent surge in popularity. Additionally, the long hours and commute associated with his previous speciality were crucial factors that Dr. Kevin considered, given his dedication to his young family of five. However, the heart-led aspect of his decision proved equally compelling. Dr. Kevin was motivated by empathy and a desire to alleviate the struggles of individuals battling hair loss. Often affecting relatively young individuals with their lives stretching ahead, the emotional toll of hair loss on their confidence and self-esteem struck a chord with Dr. Kevin. In his eyes, the value of helping these individuals is just as significant as providing care for those with heart conditions. Moreover, he enjoys the personal connections he establishes with his hair transplant patients, during consultations and where the patient is awake during treatment — an invaluable experience not possible with cardiac patients. At Tir na nOg Clinic, you will find not only a skilled surgeon but also a compassionate professional dedicated to helping you achieve your desired results. Dr. Kevin’s commitment to his patients, his extensive knowledge, and his genuine care make him the ideal surgeon to guide you on your journey toward renewed confidence and a brighter future. Travelling abroad for dental treatment:

ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW

An increasing number of people from this part of the world are travelling abroad to undertake lower-cost dental treatments which they could not otherwise afford at home. We have all, however, heard the warnings around the risks involved in availing of such services far from home. If you are thinking about going abroad for dental work, it is essential that you consider a range of factors other than just cost e.g. a clinic’s reputation with other overseas patients, the qualifications of the practitioners, your rights and protections in the country of treatment should something go wrong. Before committing to treatment, you must receive a fully costed treatment plan including information on any risks associated with the treatment and details of follow-up care. Kreativ Dental Clinic in Budapest, Hungary has been treating patients from Ireland and around the world for over 20 years. Mary Flanagan, the clinic’s representative in Ireland, outlined that the clinic has an expert team of dental specialists offering high-quality care using state-of-the-art technology. They have a proven track record when it comes to patient safety and quality of treatment and, importantly, there is an after-care service in Ireland. Planning for overseas treatment can take some time and effort but it is crucial that you get the right advice and support beforehand. Ideally, speak to someone who has travelled to the clinic before; Mary Flanagan of Kreativ Dental Clinic is a former patient herself and will happily share her experiences and answer any questions. The clinic offers a free consultation, including an OPG X-ray and a full breakdown of the treatment plan. It is then your decision if you wish to proceed with treatment or not.

MESSAGE OF THANKS TO OUR CUSTOMERS

For more information, contact Mary Flanagan who is the ROI and NI representative for Kreativ Dental Clinic. Call Mary on 00353 86 0299998 or 028 9530 0100 or email: mary@kreativdentalclinic.eu or visit kreativdentalclinic.eu

BY KERRY ASTON

Kerry is founder and director of The Movement Medic

Embracing a health-focused lifestyle This month, Dr. Kerry Aston, founder of The Movement Medic, delves into her approach to managing frustrating and unexplained symptoms. My journey began by recognising the unique challenges that individuals, especially women, encounter in the realm of chronic conditions. The gradual progression of chronic symptoms can persist for years, leaving individuals feeling unwell and medicated without fitting specific disease criteria. Frustration arises from non-specific test results and a lack of clear-cut treatments. When symptoms are not easy to classify, they tend to be dismissed. My approach aims to unravel these complexities, offering personalised solutions to address the unique health needs of women. Are you frustrated with fatigue, afternoon energy slumps, changing body composition, and unable to lose weight despite trying everything? It’s not uncommon to feel frustrated and concerned when faced with unexplained symptoms. Many women experience symptoms like fatigue, brain fog and poor concentration, often leading to concern about perimenopause. The perimenopause, characterised by its unpredictability, can manifest in various ways, such as panic attacks, heart palpitations, lack of concentration, memory lapses, sore joints, dry skin and elevated cholesterol. While some women navigate this phase seamlessly, others feel as if they are going crazy. It is important to recognise that these symptoms are not normal or insignificant, rather these are your body’s distress signals letting you know something is wrong and needs addressed.

Has the traditional health advice, to exercise more and eat less, left you feeling worse? You’re not alone in feeling frustrated and discouraged by the cycle of starting a new health plan only to find yourself back at the beginning or worse off. The common mantra of “eat less and move more” oversimplifies a complex issue. Many women have tried extreme measures like very low-calorie diets, fasting, skipping meals, or intense workout regimens, often with unsustainable results. I emphasis that diets don’t work, and sustainable health requires a balanced approach. It’s time to shift the narrative from punishment to enjoyment, focusing on three balanced meals a day, occasional treats, slow and sustainable weight loss, and overall well-being. Are you struggling with daily pain or arthritic symptoms? Chronic pain, impacting a significant portion of the UK’s population, particularly women, often stems from factors beyond tissue damage. While acute pain serves as a biological alarm system, chronic pain originates

in the brain, rendering medications targeting tissue inflammation ineffective. I acknowledge the complexity of pain, considering physical sensations, emotions, culture, behaviour and thinking. Through evidence-based medicine, testing and a holistic approach, I tailor a comprehensive plan to address your unique situation. Your symptoms deserve an answer. My holistic approach will help find the root cause of your symptoms and provide you with a personalised plan to restore your quality of life and achieve optimal health. EDITED BY REBECCA NELSON

Rebecca is founder and Director of Physiotherapy at Apex Clinic and Apex Headache Clinic.

Enjoy the Gift of No Headaches or Migraines at Christmas With the festive season upon us, Rebecca Nelson, Spinal & Headache Physiotherapy Specialist and the founder of Apex Clinic and Apex Headache Clinic, shares her top tips on staying headache and migraine free this Christmas. brisk walk for 5 to 10 minutes is all that is required to help to keep your neck from stiffening up. • Avoid heavy lifting such as carrying heavy shopping bags, which can excessively load the upper neck region and trigger headaches or migraines. Instead, choose a trolley rather than a basket and minimize the lifting of heavy loads.

December is one of our busiest months at Apex Headache Clinic. For many, the festive season is a time of stress, involving last minute shopping, present delivering and plenty of household chores. While most will attribute their headaches or migraines to the stress of the silly season, the source of the problem is often entirely different. It is not well known that the vast majority of headaches and migraines are in fact triggered from the upper neck region of the spine, even when the sufferer, in many cases, doesn’t have any neck pain. Apex Headache Clinic can confirm if the source of your headaches and migraines is your neck, after a thorough assessment. A course of treatment will then follow, involving our unique regime of manual physiotherapy treatment, only offered at Apex Headache Clinic, called the Nelson Headache Approach™. Our approach has an extremely high success rate in clearing or significantly easing patients of their debilitating headaches or migraines. It is our high success rate and medical model of treatment that encourages patients from all over Ireland and the UK to

come to us for treatment. Whilst we receive many referrals from consultant neurologists, paediatricians and GPs, patients can refer themselves. Apex Headache Clinic’s survival guide for taking the headache or migraine out of Christmas • Choose your pillow carefully. Soft or flat pillows can be a major contributing factor for triggering headaches and migraines as well as triggering neck pain and stiffness. Apex Headache Clinic are fighting the war against poor pillows with our own, custommade orthopaedic pillow collection, which are clinically proven to reduce neck pain, headaches and/or migraines in the majority of cases. The Apex Sleepwell Pillow™ is available to purchase from reception in our Stormont-based clinic or from our website – www.apexheadacheclinic.co.uk • Resist the urge to sit in front of the TV all day. Prolonged periods of sitting in the same position often leads to a stiff neck, triggering headaches or migraines in the process. Break up those box set marathons with movement breaks. As little as a

apex

• Be careful when it comes to wine consumption, as even in small quantities, wine can trigger headaches or migraines severely. Spirits and cocktails with pure fruit juice are much less of a trigger, and ensure you balance alcohol drinking with water to keep hydrated. • When a headache or migraine strikes, many people reach for painkillers in the hope of a little relief. However, too frequent medication can actually make them worse so limit taking tablets to the worst two or three days of any week and avoid taking codeine. A heat pack can provide short term relief and ice is not recommended. Tis the season to be headache-free If you suffer headaches or migraines, help is at hand. There may be a cure waiting for you here. Book an initial assessment and treatment today with one of our Headache Physiotherapy Specialists at Apex Headache Clinic and take the headache out of your Christmas. Gift vouchers are available to purchase, by calling into our Belfast-based clinic or by phoning our Reception on 028 9048 4153. Apex Headache Clinic Cleared My Migraines, It’s Like Magic! For 39-year-old Lee-Ann Savage, a Slimming World consultant from Downpatrick, the last five years have been a struggle. Lee-Ann visited Apex Headache Clinic in the hope of getting relief from her migraines. Here, she shares how the clinic’s unique regime of specialist manual physiotherapy treatment for migraines and headaches, called The Nelson Headache Approach™, cleared her migraines, meaning that she could finally start to enjoy life again. Lee-Ann, tell us how your migraines began? My migraines began after I had my second child when I was 34. I then had another child a year later when I was 35 and my migraines kept getting worse and becoming more frequent. I attended my GP to try get to the bottom of what was going on and I was then referred on to a consultant neurologist. How did the pain affect your life? When I would take a migraine, I would have pain in my neck that travelled into my head. This would have left me bed-bound for days at a time and I wasn’t able to get out and about with my young children. My migraines also affected my work life, and I couldn’t put the time needed into my work activities. It was having an awful effect on every aspect of my life. What led you to Apex Headache Clinic? When I attended the consultant neurologist, he carried out tests including a brain and spine MRI scan which showed I had degenerative wear and tear of my neck. He then referred me to Apex Headache Clinic for specialist physiotherapy

treatment with Rebecca Nelson. I had never ever heard of having physiotherapy treatment for migraines before. How has Apex Headache Clinic changed your life? I am now 95% clear of my migraines. I get the odd migraine from time to time but I know how to manage it, by following the advice I have been given by my specialist headache physiotherapist, Rebecca, my migraines are not nearly as severe as they once were. I am now able to pick my children up from school and I can go to work knowing that I can talk to the members and not just sit in agony. The change has been amazing! What advice would you offer someone suffering from migraines? I would contact Apex Headache Clinic. Give them a call and book a consultation or ask for some more information about their specialist treatment for migraines. I can’t believe how it has worked for me, it’s like magic! Could you benefit from a Gait Scan & Custom-Made Orthotics? The key to a healthier body could be right under your feet! Did you know that your feet, and how you walk, can have a direct impact on the rest of your body? A supposedly small problem with your feet can change the way you walk, which can then affect your posture, put stress on your joints and lead to pain in your knees, hips and back.

They perform a computerised analysis using Gait Scan technology, and by collating this clinical data, individual prescription orthotics are made.

Custom-made orthotics can be part of the treatment that The Clinic at Vic-Ryn offers to help relieve conditions such as Plantar Fasciitis, Achilles Tendonitis, bunion or heel pain, but interestingly they can also really help with knee, hip and back pain. REVIEW

Christmas Country Escape... Ulster Tatler’s Rebecca Parker spends a night at Farnham Estate, Spa & Golf Resort. Autumn is one of my favourite seasons of the year; I just love the crunch of golden leaves underfoot, a crisp chill in the air and the beginning of cosy evenings at home by the fire. My birthday is in the month of October so my fiancé and I always plan a little staycation to celebrate. A few years ago, I had planned a Christmas break at Farnham Estate but unfortunately couldn’t make it, so this time I was extremely excited to head down for an overnight stay – just in time for my birthday! The hotel is situated in a beautiful 1,300-acre country estate just on the outskirts of Cavan town. The long drive through the estate towards the resort was absolutely beautiful with views over the golf course and down towards the lake. As we approached the house, it felt like we had stepped into an episode of Downtown Abbey. The contemporary interiors inside the hotel complement the olde-worlde charm of the estate perfectly. Following a very warm welcome upon arrival, we made our way into the music room to enjoy a delectable afternoon tea by the warmth of the log fire. We were treated to three tiers of baked, savoury and sweet treats. The freshly baked scones with homemade rhubarb jam went down an absolute treat. We then made our way up to our room to get ready for an afternoon of relaxation in the hotel’s Health Spa. I spent a blissful hour experiencing the brand new ESPA Signature Treatment. The tailored treatment began with a calming foot massage, followed by an aromatheraphy back, neck and shoulders massage using

a specially selected blend of oils to help reduce tensions in mind and body and relax tired muscles. The final touch was a personalised ESPA facial, expertly adapted by the therapist to focus on my unique skin needs. I certainly left feeling refreshed, relaxed and renewed. After my treatment, we explored the rest of the spa facilities Farnham has to offer. My personal favourite was the indoor/ outdoor hydrotheraphy and infinity pool. It also has tranquil relaxation areas and a Water Mint Thermal Suite which includes a steam room, sauna and snail showers. In the evening, we headed back to our room to freshen up ahead of a drinks reception in The Cedar Rooms. They are named after one of Farnham’s oldest trees, the Cedar of Lebanon. The mixologist, Davide, served us some delicious cocktails. We both opted for an Amalfi Coast Spritz which was the perfect choice to refresh our palettes ahead of our meal in Maxell’s restaurant. The evening meal was definitely the most highly anticipated part of our stay as their signature restaurant is overseen by highly-acclaimed chef, Philippe Farineau. The intimate dinner consisted of a 7-course tasting menu, personally selected by the chef. The first course was a crab croquette followed by Skeghanore

104

duck and baked beetroot. We then had a green apple sorbet & raspberry foam, a lovely palette cleanser between courses. The main dish of the evening was beef Wellington and I can only use one word to describe it – DIVINE! Dessert was a chocolate & bailey dome to add the perfect sweet touch to finish the meal. The next morning, we woke up after a very comfortable night’s sleep and checked out the gym facilities before heading for our breakfast. After 5k on the treadmill we were definitely ready for food! I always struggle when choosing breakfast in a hotel - it was even harder here as there was so much on offer. From cooked to continental, they had it all. Among other things, we ordered some freshly made pancakes which set us up for the long journey home. Before leaving, we took a short stroll around the grounds and delighted in the different walking paths and trails which are on the estate. It really is the perfect Christmas country escape. We will most definitely be returning to explore some more and maybe treat ourselves to another slice of the delicious velvet cake! www.farnhamestate.ie County Cavan

Festive Entertaining with Quooker When it comes to kitchen entertaining at Christmas, Quooker has you covered. For the bustling household, the ultimate dinner party hostess or designated Christmas chef, Quooker taps make kitchen life and culinary chores remarkably easy. Giving instant hot water, alongside filtered, chilled and sparkling alternatives with the CUBE accessory, Quooker taps are one of the most useful appliances in the kitchen. As the original and only true 100°C boiling water tap brand on the market, Quooker leads the way when it comes to innovative technology and design. Using very little electricity and giving staggering energy saving results, thanks to its sophisticated state-of-the-art tank technology, it takes very little energy (just 10 watts) to keep the water in the tank at 110°C. Water only starts to boil when the tap is turned on and the temperature of the outflowing water drops to 100°C. While the water is coming out of the tap, fresh water immediately flows into the tank to replace the exact amount extracted ready for the next use. Also boasting sophisticated state-of-the-art, child-safe handle systems that will never automatically dispense boiling water, Quooker offers the safest tap on the market. With a patented double push and twist mechanism, boiling water is safely dispensed following a quick and deliberate motion. Quooker taps also dispense boiling water as an aerated flow rather than a solid jet of water, meaning water feels hot but not scalding to touch, should any accidental contact occur. Look to Quooker this Christmas. For more information, visit www.quooker.co.uk.

POST POP ARTISTIC CLASH BY TONY (TONES) EARLEY. Read about how music can be very, very emotive, can change a mood, and set the tone of your feelings! How it has been known to make a grown man cry! Self sabotage, why I hurt myself to ‘drink in wit out’. Temper tantrums, fasten your seat belt. You are in for the ride of a lifetime on the, emotional rock ‘n’ roll rollercoaster! Tony (Tones) Earley

Post Pop Artistic Clash will take you on a journey. A journey that meanders the ups and downs of mental health issues. From the downright bizarre, to foolish facts of life! You will meet some colourful characters along the way. From Volatile Vincent Van Gogh to David Jones and the hero of lockdown, Captain Tom. We will go to the beach in Ballywalter, visit Scrabo in Newtownards. Onto Rathlin Island, where Robert the Bruce hid in a cave from the English in 1306... Watched a spider try to climb, on the third attempt it completed its task. He thought, never give up!

A BRAVE NEW WORK

After recieving this book from the author, I could not put it down and read it from cover to cover. A collection of poetry which ranges from the dark to humorous , brutally honest and many emotions in between. From childhood days at the beach to the psychiatric ward, Tone’s work left me with one message – keep going, you are not alone. His artwork included in the book illustrated the fire and ice of bipolar affective disorder, which I immediately related to. A brave new work and I look forward to any further works by this author.

REVIEWS The debut poetry book by Tones does as it promises and takes the reader on a journey. Tones (a nickname derived from The Undertones), a music aficionado, an artist and a talented poet, has crafted a collection of poetry which acts as an open letter as to who he is. Post Pop Artistic Clash provides a commentary on today’s world in poems such as ‘The Era of the Selfie’ and ‘Control Climate Change’, but where it really soars is the deeply personal commentary on Tones himself. A recurring theme throughout is that of mental health and Tones, who dedicates the book to the health care professionals who have supported him on his own mental health journey, does not shy away from discussing his own battles. ‘Well Being’ captures how the exterior often doesn’t match the inner turmoil, whilst ‘Emotions’ and ‘Self Sabotage’ are snapshots of self reflection. The collection also touches on Tones’ identity in relation to

Five-star Amazon review from A.N Wilson B.A. where he was raised in the likes of ‘Son of Scrabo’. He also pays tribute to his palpable love of music in poems such as ‘David Jones’, a tribute to his ‘hero’ David Bowie. The collection features upbeat and humorous poems but it is the darker, raw poems that really impact the reader. Personal experiences shared in the likes of ‘Blackouts’, ‘Suicidal’ and ‘Gaslighter’ are sobering in their honesty. The poetry in Post Pop Artistic Clash is wonderfully complemented with bold, edgy and vivid art which helps bring several of the poems to a new level of effect. This searingly honest, achingly raw, and remarkably brave debut collection is about the intricacies of life and one man’s journey of selfdiscovery. It’s an absolute must-read. Council Get Behind ‘Make It Local’ Campaign A new Christmas ‘Make It Local’ promotional campaign has been launched by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Valerie Harte. The campaign coincides with the busy shopping period on the approach to Christmas and shines a light on a range of businesses from Newry and Downpatrick that have been impacted by the floods. It promotes the Council’s ‘Make It Local’ message, which highlights the district’s unique business offering and encourages residents to prioritise local products and services above others when purchasing their Christmas gifts. Speaking about the importance of the Make It Local message, Chairperson, Councillor Valerie Harte said: “The Council has long demonstrated its firm support for local businesses through its ‘Make It Local’ initiative, which promotes local goods and services through planned campaigns and events. “Prioritising a ‘Make It Local’ approach enhances the sustainability of our vibrant city and town centres. Now as businesses and commercial centres pick up the pieces after this month’s flooding, we want them

to know that we support them and are committed to their economic recovery.” Councillor Harte added: “The flooding emergency that has recently hit parts of the district has been well documented and the circumstances some of our businesses and residents are being faced with are devastating, which is why I am encouraging everyone to shop locally during this festive period. “This year the Christmas campaign will highlight several Newry and Downpatrick businesses affected by the flooding. In Newry, McCartan Bros has temporarily relocated to The Quays Shopping Centre, selling the finest tailoring, casual wear, footwear and accessories. Kukoon Rugs continues to trade online and has also temporarily relocated to The Quays, selling rugs by room, collection or colour. George Preston Florists has reopened in Sugar Island in Newry, selling festive flowers, Christmas decorations and gifts from artisan suppliers. “Downpatrick businesses also continue to recover demonstrating the entrepreneurial resilience of our business community. McCartan Sports and Shoes is trading in the sports shop on Market

Cllr Valerie Harte, Chairperson, Newry, Mourne and Down District Council.

Street and Murphy’s Bar has reopened in its original location and is planning for a busy festive season. Petals and Pots have opened on Scotch Street and are ready to supply beautiful bespoke floral arrangements. “If there is any positive that can be drawn from these devastating events, it is the unrivalled support for the business community. If you cannot visit a store in person, another brilliant way to support our local businesses is to buy a gift voucher for a loved one. “We continue to strive for our district to be one of the best places to live, work and visit. This Christmas, Make It Local. Make It Newry, Mourne and Down. Thank you for your continued support.”

Ballymena at CHRISTMAS Ulster Tatler speaks to Katie Smith from Katie Smith Aesthetics on...

What do you love most above living/working in Ballymena? Ballymena is a hub of activity and has a real sense of community. We are so lucky to be so close to the beautiful north coast and yet thirty minutes in the opposite direction transports you to the brilliant Belfast city. What makes Ballymena special at Christmas? Ballymena’s shopping scene is only improving with the addition of many new shops in the Fairhill and the Tower Centre. There is a magical feel around the town centre with the twinkling lights and carol singers. Also the support and encouragement between local businesses is palpable, especially at Christmas! Are there any hidden gems in the area? Not exactly a secret, but the magical decorations and intricate lights displayed at Galgorm Resort & Spa make for a wonderful spectacle. Also, frosty walks around Galgorm Castle with hot chocolate to warm one’s hands is hard to beat! What are your festive plans for this year, do you have any traditions? This will be a very special yet different Christmas this year for me, as it is my first not working for the NHS. I would usually work Christmas Day so it will be lovely to soak in the celebrations with my family. I’d like to wish everyone in the hospitals, emergency services and retail sectors a heartfelt thank you for leaving your loved ones at this time of year, it’s not easy but you are all the real superheroes of this country!

Christmas Shows at The Braid A range of festive shows will be taking place at The Braid in Ballymena throughout December and January. Friday 15th December: Braid Film Theatre with Fright Club NI presents Krampus Saturday 16th-23rd December: Cre8 Theatre presents Robin Hood and the Peaceful People Posse – The Pantomime Thursday 21st December: Ballymena Chamber Orchestra – A Christmas Celebration Friday 29th December: Christmas Country Music Showtime with the Stars Saturday 6th January: Tale of the Frozen Heart For more information visit www.thebraid.ticketsolve.com

The awards are organised annually by Ballymena Area Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the principal sponsor this year was Mid and East Antrim Borough Council. This year over 440 guests attended the glittering event which showcased the range of first class businesses in the Ballymena Area. The BBC’s Stephen Watson was the compere for the evening and his first duty was to invite Chamber President Leigh Heggarty to speak. Leigh said, “The night is about celebrating the success of the Ballymena Business Community, focusing on the huge contribution made by local businesses and to highlight the commitment made by so many individuals. I am a local girl, born and bred in Ballymena, and I am passionate about helping our businesses develop and grow. As a Chamber we see the awards as an excellent platform to promote Ballymena to the rest of Northern Ireland as a great place to live, work and do business.”

Tom Wiggins, Chamber’s Chief Executive said, ‘This year as a Chamber we decided to sponsor and present two new awards. The first award ‘The Special Recognition Award’ was presented to Mid and East Antrim Borough Council to acknowledge the tremendous support they have given and continue to give to businesses across the Ballymena Area. The second new award, the ‘Services to The Community Award’ was presented to The Community Rescue Service to mark the efforts of all the volunteers who go above and beyond to help find missing and vulnerable people from all communities.” During the evening, a raffle was held with the proceeds going to the NI Hospice – a fantastic amount of £3,465 was raised. The evening was rounded off with entertainment from New Light who soon had the guests on their feet dancing the night away.

Debbie, who has more than 16 years’ experience in tailored financial services became part of the AAB Wealth team in January of this year, based in their Belfast office. This national award recognises her exceptional talent, dedication, and expertise in the financial advice industry, as well as her impact as a woman financial planner. Taking the time to understand their unique needs and goals, and working with them to develop a personalised financial plan that helps them achieve their dreams. “I am honoured to have been recognised for this work, as it reaffirms my belief in the power of personalised financial advice to positively impact lives. I hope that my achievements can inspire others and empower more women in my profession." Cross-border accountancy and business advisory firm FPM merged with AAB Group,

“With new works, established classics and visiting shows, Spring at the Lyric is certainly not to be missed.” EDITED BY KELLIE BURCH KELLIE@ULSTERTATLER.COM

Lyric Theatre’s New Season Launch

‘Tis the season...for the launch of another exciting new season at the Lyric Theatre, Belfast.. Whilst the winter weather whipped up a storm outside, inside the theatre’s cafe there was a hint of spring in the air. After a successful 2023 season, guests such as playwright Owen McCafferty and radio presenter Ibe Sesay gathered to hear more about what will be on offer in 2024. Highlights for this season include a major Lyric production of Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women (3 Feb – 2 March), in a new adaptation by Anne-Marie Casey. Also, back by very popular demand, the critically acclaimed and award-winning Agreement (9 – 30 March). As part of the Lyric’s commitment to encouraging vital conversations around sustainability, the Creative Learning team have partnered with the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) to devise Wastebusters (19 Feb – 15 March), an exciting new play which will tour to thousands of children in primary schools across Northern Ireland. The Lyric also partnered with the National Theatre to deliver a youth theatre festival for the 12th consecutive year! NT Connections will take place from 5th – 7th April and 12th – 14th April. Two visiting productions will be featured as part of this year’s Young at Arts, Belfast Children’s Festival: Grand Soft Day (8 – 10 March), a playful and charming show that celebrates the wonder of the world around us; and BullyBully (14 – 16 March), a madcap musical about childish grown-up men, featuring two performers, songs, funny quarrels, a bit of bickering and eventually, a happy ending. Brassneck Theatre Company will present the award-nominated Project Children (24 April – 5 May) by Fionnuala Kennedy and directed by Tony Devlin on the Main Stage. Also on the Main Stage, in Sunny Side Up (9 - 21 April) Diona Doherty draws upon her own IVF journey in a hilarious yet heartfelt dark comedy. With new works, established classics, and visiting shows, Spring at the Lyric is certainly not to be missed. The new season launch at the Lyric took place on Thursday 16th November.

A Kickstarter fundraiser helped to fund their first wheel, from there the business has grown rapidly ever since! From the garage, the couple moved out to the Millennium Court Art Centre in Portadown, where they have been for the last two and a half years. Occupying the arts and crafts room there, Josh has been busy making lots of mugs and teaching his very popular ‘Pizza and Pottery Classes’. Whilst Josh was busy making, Holly was even busier selling! Travelling the length and breadth of the country to every craft fair that would have them! Now the word is out, Mud Ireland has built a name for themselves, and now they’ve built a pottery too! Their new High Street premises were opened on Friday 17th November. At 9:30am, the Mayor of Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council, Councillor Andrew Gowan, cut the ribbon and invited the first customers to enter the new shop. Local councillors, Owen Gawith, Peter Lavery of the Alliance party and DUP’s Caleb McCready were also in attendance to throw their support behind the new shop. Customers were welcomed into the shop by Josh and Holly and were amazed by the wonderfully handcrafted pottery. The building is split into two sections by a floor-to-ceiling glass partition, so customers standing in the shop can view into the pottery itself and see how it’s done! The creative pair are very excited to have finally opened their dream pottery; they hope to add to the already vibrant village with their engaging pottery classes and, of course, amazing pottery! In Josh’s words, “We are over the moon to have finally made it to Moira, since Holly and I began the business, we’ve known that this was the place we wanted to be. Now that we are here, we can’t wait to see what comes next! Bring it on!” WWW.MUDIRELAND.COM

he Horseshoe Gallery is located in Saintfield; a quirky little gallery housed in a listed building at the top of the town. The owners, husband-and-wife team Michael and Audrey Smyth, are both sculptors and Michael also paints. They draw on the surrounding countryside for inspiration, with their subject matter including everything from local flora and fauna to quaint pieces depicting swimmers as seen in Audrey’s collection. Michael and Audrey’s artworks on display in the Horseshoe Gallery cover a wide variety of mediums: oil paintings, watercolours, drawings, ceramic sculptures and mixed-media works. However, the couple’s love and appreciation of art extends beyond their own work; when they opened the gallery they reached out to a number of local artists, providing a space and platform for these artists to sell their work. A carefully chosen selection of beautiful, hand-crafted pieces are on display, including elegant jewellery, prints and a variety of stunning textiles. This all adds to the unique viewing experience at the Horseshoe Gallery. Michael and Audrey believe that the purchase of a piece of art is a memorable experience, with the new owner attaching personal meaning to the artwork. Audrey has many interests in life, always keen to pursue new adventures and experiences, all of

which are reflected in her artwork. She believes that her lust for life is the foundation for all she creates. In addition to running a busy gallery, she practises daily yoga and meditation, swims every day, cycles and loves all forms of exercise. Her mantra is: keeping active keeps the spirit vital and uplifted. This upbeat outlook adds to an energy and spontaneity that is reflected in her work. Audrey began her artistic career as a mature student at Castlereagh College, where she completed a foundation year under the eye of tutor Ray Duncan. She then went on to gain a BA Hons in ceramics at the University of Ulster, followed by a Masters in fine art, all while training in bronze casting at the foundry in Belfast Met for many years. Audrey has achieved many highlights in her career but describes standout moments which include being recognised by her peers at the Royal Ulster Academy of Arts, the largest and longest established body of practising visual artists in Northern Ireland. Over the years, her work has been selected many times for the annual exhibition, which led to her winning the Connor Prize; she is also a bronze medal winner. Her works have been purchased and held in many prestigious collections such as the Museum of Modern Art Dublin, the UTV collection, the Ulster Bank collection, the Ombudsman office, and even Bono has purchased pieces for his private collection. When Audrey isn’t in the gallery or the gym, she works from her home studio in Raholp, a picturesque village near Strangford. The Horseshoe Gallery, Saintfield opens two days a week: Friday and Saturday from 10am to 5pm. You can also find Michael and Audrey’s work on Facebook, where they have a large following from all over the world, with pieces regularly shipped to America, France and beyond. Audrey enjoys personal interaction online, building relationships with clients who have purchased solely from photos or videos on Facebook. Audrey reports that many customers return time and again, a testament to the quality and desirability of the work.

Audrey explains, “I am always in love with my latest piece, having taken weeks or months to explore and develop my initial vision into a reality. The delight when it is shared with the person who purchases it and the joy it will bring that person… I share my story, my vision and it lives within the piece forever. For me, this is the greatest gift to share. The passion and love that art evokes within us, that’s why a lot of purchases are spontaneous; it’s the unexpected emotion that the viewer experiences.”

catch up on the phone with friends and family in Bangladesh, before doing some household chores whilst listening to music. Soon enough, it is time to get to the restaurant to sort out deliveries and get the restaurant prepped for opening.

2. What has been your career highlight to date? Building The East Bengal from scratch! When I first started out, the building was nothing but a shell that required a lot of work, but a strong passion for South Asian cuisine coupled with a focused work ethic enabled us to become an integral facet of Ballyhackamore. Of course, none of this would have been possible without the support of my nearest and dearest.

5. Do you have a fitness regime? I find it difficult to have and stick to a daily fitness routine because I am usually very busy running the restaurant, but I enjoy a brisk 15 minute walk at least once a day, whilst also stretching when I can.

3. What are your favourite hobbies/ activities outside of work? I absolutely adore being beside the seaside. There is nothing more refreshing and grounding than smelling the Irish salt and hearing the waves crash against the coast, especially after a busy weekend at work. Aside from that, I love to travel and eat out with my friends and daughters when I can. 4. What is your daily routine? I groom and pray before breakfast. I then

6. Do you have any tips for staying positive during this time? Regardless of whichever hardship we are facing, whether it’s individually or as a community, staying connected with friends and family is vital. If that isn’t an option, then being in social spaces surrounded by people helps to keep positivity up – The East Bengal is the perfect place for this. 7. What do you think is the best thing about living in Northern Ireland? Geographically, Northern Ireland is a very special place. Belfast is big enough to cover everything you need from a city but is only a stone’s throw away from the mountains and sea. The transport links are 189

9. Who has been your biggest influence? My parents have always been my biggest influence and inspiration, especially growing up, and even more so now that I am also a parent. I also really value the perspective of my friends too.

But for brunch, General Merchants is always a great spot, and if I am dining out for a special occasion then The Great Room at The Merchant Hotel always offers the best seasonal plates. Holiday Destination: Venice and Valencia. Both places have amazing food markets and orange juice. Drink: Non-alcoholic pina colada. Meal: Fish curry made with Hilsa, which is the national fish of Bangladesh, as it reminds me of home and my heritage.
