The Come Back ADRIAN MARGEY EXHIBITION & SALE OF WORK AT TITANIC HOTEL BELFAST Art lovers are looking forward to a major new exhibition and sale of work by Adrian Margey at Titanic Hotel Belfast from Friday 25th – Sunday 27th February. The show has been billed as the artist’s ‘come back exhibition’, having been forced to pause physical exhibitions for the past two years due to Covid-19 restrictions. During lockdown, Margey’s series of online home-schooling tutorials and popular virtual exhibitions filmed in his Portstewart home earned him a significant following on social media but the artist is eager to return to in-person events. “I am incredibly excited to re-launch physical in-person exhibitions in one of the famous Drawing Offices at Titanic Hotel Belfast. The exhibition space is really beautiful. Flooded with natural northern light, it lends itself perfectly to showcasing my diverse new collection. I will be on hand throughout the course of the exhibition to discuss the work on show and talk over potential commissions with visitors.” This eclectic exhibition at Titanic Hotel will showcase a wide variety of the artist’s enigmatic work. From large-scale canvases in his bold contemporary signature style to smaller, impressionistic works using naturalistic colours. Depictions of Belfast Castle, Cavehill, Belvoir Forest, the Crown Bar, City Hall, Barnett Demesne, Lady Dixon, Shaw’s Bridge, Minnowburn and the Lagan Tow Path all feature. Donegal, the North Coast, Glens of Antrim and the Mournes have also inspired much of this new collection. Representations of traditional Irish musicians and dancers add another layer of appeal to this latest collection. Admission is free and everyone is welcome. Opening times as follows: Friday 25th February: 6pm – 9pm / Saturday 26th February: 11am – 8pm & Sunday 27th February: 11am – 6pm. For more information telephone Margey’s Portrush studio on 07841593762 or visit www.adrianmargey.com.

The purchase of the former Tesco building on Royal Avenue by Belfast City Council is a great show of faith. Let’s face it, this part of the city centre has taken a real battering over the last couple of years. The double whammy of the Primark fire combined with the impact of Covid restrictions has left this crucial junction in the city centre in a sorry state. The decision of Tesco to close their flagship city centre store was just the icing on the cake but thankfully things are beginning to look up. Whilst not completed, the painstaking restoration of the Bank Buildings (Primark) is starting to take shape and Belfast City Council’s decision to buy the Tesco building and to reopen it as a temporary events space is a good one. It should help breathe life into this integral part of the city just when it needs it. The range of temporary uses for 2 Royal Avenue include a café, a chill-out area, musical performances, a series of artists’ pods and a micro gallery exhibiting one painting at a time. Gerard Dillon’s “Innishlacken Couple” is currently on display, on loan from the Ulster Museum. I’m not sure what the Council’s long-term plans are but at least this will stop this landmark building from falling into disrepair and opens it up to the public. If you haven’t called in yet, it’s worth a visit.

LIFE & TIMES EDITED BY KATHY CLUGSTON
Kathy Clugston is a freelance radio presenter. She chairs the long-running BBC Radio 4 programme ‘Gardeners’ Question Time’ and presents the weekly entertainment show ‘The Ticket’ on BBC Radio Ulster.
Standing Tall
This month, Kathy Clugston discusses the the stigma of women being taller than their male partners.
The world was rocked recently by the shocking news that the film actor Tom Holland - star of the recent blockbuster Spiderman: No Way Home - is shorter than his girlfriend and co-star Zendaya, who plays MJ. Two whole inches shorter. I saw them joke about it on The Graham Norton Show, Zendaya explaining gleefully how doing aerial stunts together was a bit awkward as her longer legs would always land on the ground before tiny Tom’s. But somehow certain elements of the press had managed to turn this into a ‘scandal’ - how on earth did they kiss? Didn’t they realise how weird it looks? In fact, such was the sniping that in another interview Tom commented on the “ridiculous” societal expectations placed on straight couples. Zendaya told us her mother is taller than her dad, and “this is normal, too”. Both challenged the “stupid assumption” that the man should be taller than the woman. OK, so nobody’s world was actually rocked, it was just another showbiz storm in a teacup, but I was gratified by the stars’ passionate rebuttal. Tall women have had to struggle with this kind of unthinking bias all our lives. I speak as someone who stands 6ft 1” in her stocking feet. The comments I get are irritating but usually benign, along the lines of “gosh you’re tall, aren’t you?”, as if I might
not have noticed myself. Most of us would never dream of commenting on a person we’ve just met’s broad hips or large ears but height seems to be fair game. Some people, women usually, are admiring: “you’re like a supermodel”, they say, even though I”m more likely to feature on the cover of Puzzlers’ Weekly than Cosmopolitan, “I’d love to be tall like you.” Being lengthy in the leg department does have undoubted benefits: reaching things on high shelves, seeing over the crowds at concerts, being accorded a certain amount of (largely undeserved) authority, always being remembered, even if it’s as ‘the tall one’. Finding a mate, though? A bit trickier. While there are folk who aren’t bothered one way or the other, most straight men would say they’d prefer a woman to be shorter than them. They might fantasise about being dominated by a sexy Amazonian goddess but a real-life, ordinary woman of stature is often considered less feminine and more intimidating. It works both ways of course. There are women who wouldn’t consider dating a man who doesn’t tower over them, who crave being enfolded in the arms of a taller and, by evolutionary implication, more admired and successful bloke. The prehistoric trope of the big, strong man “protecting” the petite, delicate woman still

echoes through our society. Frankly, if I had hung around waiting for gargantuan men to sweep me into their arms, I’d have spent a heck of a lot of time on my own. I’ve only ever had one 6-foot-plus boyfriend in my life. Sure, we looked great together but unsurprisingly that was not enough to sustain a successful relationship. I even spent three years living in the Netherlands, home to the tallest race in Europe, but rather than find myself a giant Dutchman I ended up with a diminutive Spaniard. Typical. My partner now, Jim, is not as tall as me and we rarely give it a moment’s thought. After all, physical attributes melt away when personality, values, humour and enormous wealth

come to the fore (I’m joking about the last bit.) This is one of the drawbacks of online dating, which restricts us to choosing within the parameters we think we prefer. Jim and I would never have swiped right or clicked ‘like’. On paper we are no match at all: more than a decade apart in age, four inches apart in height, light years apart in tastes and interests - but somehow it works. When it comes to finding ‘the one’ (or at least ‘a one’) it’s time we stopped limiting our options. What we see in popular culture - on TV, in adverts, in magazines, in films - should dispel the myth of how a couple “ought” to look. And Spiderman reaching up to kiss MJ is a good start.

GRUB CLUB AT HILLSBOROUGH CASTLE Twenty months later than scheduled, the prestigious Grub Club’s annual Ladies’ Night Dinner took place in the magnificent setting of the Throne Room in Hillsborough Castle. Planned for May 2020 by then President Peter Lunn the Covid 19 pandemic caused two postponements so it fell to current President Keith Shields to welcome 42 members and partners. Following a brief tour of the castle guests were splendidly catered for by Chef Simon Dougan and his team from Yellow Door. “Conjecturing Winter Stories has a fairytale feel. Each viewing allows you to tease out new details of each intricate piece.” EDITED BY KELLIE BURCH KELLIE@ULSTERTATLER.COM
Carol Graham Exhibition Launch January is a dark month, but a sublime palette of colour was injected into the mix as ArtisAnn Gallery on Bloomfield Avenue unveiled the latest exhibition from Carol Graham RUA. Entitled ‘Conjuring Winter Stories’, this innovative showcase is a combination of collage, drawings, oil paintings and ink, masterfully blended to create images of intrigue and mysticism. Speaking to Carol on the night, she explained that collage is something she has experimented with for many years during her work with art therapy groups. “I began to realise that the spaces in between - for me - were just as important as the bits of collage. I played more with the colour and added elements like tissue paper.” Carol, who has been working on the collection since last Autumn, said that the pieces give strands of a story which she encourages the viewer to combine together to interpret their own stories. Conjuring Winter Stories has a fairytale feel. Each viewing allows you to tease out new details of each intricate piece. Carol explained that she paints during the day and so a viewing in daylight will provide a totally different experience than a viewing in the evening. Exploring Carol’s exquisite compositions were her granddaughter Thea, her son Simon, Green Party MLA Claire Bailey, artist Graham Gingles, and award-winning poet Alice McCullough. Whilst Carol Graham is skilled at capturing a range of subject matters, this current devolpment is innovative and engaging. My favourite piece from the exhibition was ‘Venetian Styx’, a stunning mixed media work. I was lucky enough to visit Venice just before we were plunged into lockdown. This piece particularly resonated with me as it effortlessly captured the magic of this picturesque city. As a whole, each carefully crafted piece combines to create a dream-like collection which showcases just what an exceptional artist Carol is. ‘Conjuring Winter Stories’ ran at ArtisAnn Gallery from 5-29 January.

Boiling Point at QFT As many cultural events once again had to be postponed and eagerly anticipated festivals rescheduled due to ongoing Covid restrictions in January, I was delighted to have the chance to visit the wonderful Queen’s Film Theatre to view Philip Barantini’s single-take thriller Boiling Point. Boiling Point opens with charismatic head chef Andy Jones (played by Stephen Graham) as he arrives at his restaurant - one of London’s hottest eateries - to a surprise visit from a health and safety inspector. Tensions simmer as over bookings compete with stock shortages to create a recipe of disaster. As Andy tries to diffuse tensions between management and crew while catering to the ridiculous demands of customers, it’s more than the pots on the stoves that threaten to boil over and ruin everything Andy has worked for. The breath-taking film was followed
Michelle and Paul Maxwell.
by a special pre-recorded Q&A with actors Stephen Graham and Lauryn Ajufo, director Philip Barantini, and cinematographer Matthew Lewis. Boiling Point is a smart character study where every character we meet drives the narrative. Based on a Barantini’s 2019 short, Boiling Point is a masterclass in adrenalinefuelled film-making. This breathlessly kinetic production was captured in one thrilling continuous take. Pressures around production almost rivalled those on screen as shooting was shut down early due to the outbreak of Covid-19 and the 8 takes the team thought they had to capture the film were reduced to a mere 4. However, preparation was key and cinematographer Matthew Lewis created a flowing choreography for the film, so he knew exactly where he needed to be to capture every second of the drama. The story itself is a realistic compilation of
vignettes of each character’s life. Messages are delivered subtly yet effectively. Shocks come from the racism experienced in hospitality and emotions are stoked by the human interactions we get to glimpse as we race through the action. The film was based on a loose script but much of it was improvised during filming and the result is authenticity. It really highlights the talent of the actors and the powerful camaraderie that was established during filming. Boiling Point cooks up a storm. It is a fast-paced, nerve-jangling film with an innovative concept, superb cinematography, subtly nuanced storytelling topped off with stellar performances from the ensemble cast and a powerful central performance by Stephen Graham. I would definitely enjoy seconds of this wonderfully crafted treat. Boiling Point and Q&A took place at the QFT on 7 January.

Northern Ireland Screen funded film, Rough, which has been long-listed for the BAFTA Awards.
Rough Longlisted Look North! The North Belfast Festival North Belfast’s rich culture and built heritage is to be recognised in a new Festival whose aim is to celebrate the story of North Belfast with its vibrant and diverse community. This debut weekend festival - Look North! The North Belfast Festival - will take place from Friday 25 to Sunday 27 February in a wide range of venues along the new North Belfast Cultural Corridor. In just over one mile you can find 15 historic buildings and sites which stretch back to the 18th Century. It is an area also renowned as the birthplace and alma mater of such international literary talent as Brian Moore, Helen Waddell, John Hewitt, Ciaran Carson, Sinéad Morrisey, Anne Devlin, Gerald Dawe, Bernard MacLaverty, and Anna Burns. The festival programme is jam-packed with activities to showcase and celebrate North Belfast’s rich heritage and its cultural, creative and literary talents, with appearances from local authors, artists and young people, though it is not all limited to the area. To this end the programme reflects a wide range of activities and interests, including talks, poetry readings, panel discussions, walks, historic tours, the visual arts, music and comedy performances, creative writing classes for adults and the launch of the first Look North! Short Story Literary Awards in association with Intercomm North Belfast. To view the full schedule, and to book for events, please visit northbelfastfestival.com
Northern Ireland Screen funded short film, Rough, written and directed by Adam Patterson and Declan Lawn (The Sailsbury Poisonings) and produced by Gallagher Films’ Louise Gallagher (A Bump Along the Way) has made it one step closer to a BAFTA as the longlists for the EE British Academy Film Awards in 2022 were released recently. Rough, about Belfast gangsters passing a death sentence on a dog, stars Ryan McParland, Michael Smiley, Gerard Jordan, Peter Heenan, Brendan Quinn, Andrew McGarrigle and Kelly the terrier. Rough is about truth-telling and forgiveness and how in an absurd world of obscene power, unthinking violence and masculinity gone wrong, the truth can – just once in a while - set us all free. Ten short films have been longlisted in the British Short Film category, five will be nominated. The nominations will be announced on Thursday 3rd February with the ceremony taking place on Sunday 13th March.
Some Integrity LAUNCH Some Integrity, the eagerly-awaited debut collection from award-winning poet Padraig Regan was recently published by Carcanet. Padraig, winner of the Clarissa Luard Prize 2021, is the author of two poetry pamphlets: Delicious (Lifeboat, 2016) and Who Seemed Alive & Altogether Real (Emma Press, 2017). The poems of Some Integrity bring something new to the Irish lyric tradition. Queerness is a way of looking, a perspective, grounded in an awareness of the porous and provisional nature of our bodies. The book’s social encounters and exchanges, its responses to the work of artists, its figures in a landscape, and its considerations of food and desire, work as capsule narratives and as an exhilarating extension of that lyric tradition. My usualy first to arrive and I get straight into emails and start the day from there. 5. Do you have a specific fitness regime? I don’t follow a particular fitness routine, but I do enjoy a walk or jog. In the summer months you could find me out on the jet ski or behind a speedboat water-skiing. 6. Do you have any tips for staying positive? I think living through a pandemic has taught us all to be positive in what seems like huge challenges. In business there are challenges that if you are not careful, can play on your mind and work on you. If you are clear on the direction that you are on personally or that the business is on, then you work towards seeing the end result. I was always taught there is power in positive thinking whether that is going into a negotiation or a tough situation. A positive mindset helps to achieve a positive outcome.
Phillip Logan Sales Director, Algram Modern Living
7. What do you think is the best thing about living in Northern Ireland? Northern Ireland is a fantastic place to live, to bring up a family, to work and to do business. For such a small place, we produce some of the best sports people and many businesses that have had success worldwide, talented graduates who ensure that worldwide companies continue to invest in Northern Ireland, which in turn helps the retail sector all throughout Northern Ireland. A skilled workforce will ensure a great economy in Northern Ireland and as that continues to improve, small businesses will see the benefits. We have beautiful country and on days off I’ll be found at the North Coast, which is a jewel in the crown of Northern Ireland.
1. What do you love most about your job? I love the variety of being involved in a small business, particularly in retail. From travelling and selecting products that ultimately contribute to the performance of the business, to unloading a lorry in our warehouse. From presenting figures at a management meetings, to meeting customers in the showroom. Being involved in a small business means you must be adaptable to the changing needs of the business. Another important aspect is meeting people; we’ve created a destination store. No longer are we simply a local furniture store, but we have positioned ourselves as a destination for people all over Northern Ireland. As such, I get to meet a variety of people from different backgrounds.
8. What is your mantra or favourite quote that you live by? Success is not final, failure is not fatal, it is the courage to continue that counts. – Winston Churchill.
2. What has been your career highlight to date? I think it has been the progression through the business; from a sales executive in my early 20s, to today being a director. Since my appointment to that role we have seen year-on-year growth. I’m also proud of my time in the Northern Ireland Assembly, winning a seat in my first election was no small thing. As short as my time was, I achieived some long lasting outcomes for my local area. Of course I will always feel aggrieved that I didn’t get long enough to progress on important leglisations.
9. Who has been your biggest influence? I admire innovators and strategic thinkers. From local people like William Wright to worldwide names like Elon Musk. I wouldn’t point to any one person as an influence although so far in my career whether it be business or politics I’ve admired different people for different abilities and always attempted to cherry pick those qualities and combine them with my own initative.
10. FAVOURITE
3. What are your favourite hobbies/activities outside of work? I think it’s being a dad to my four-year old, Freddie. With a mixture of farming, water sports and swimming. I also continue to work alongside charitable organisations helping them with strategy and planning. The rest of my spare time is spent helping my dad, he runs a funeral business in the village of Ahoghill. My grandfather, who was also Freddie, started the business over 50 years ago.
Movie: The God Father Trillogy Band/Musician: Luke Combs
4. What is your daily routine? The older I get, the earlier I wake up. Long gone are the days of sleeping in. Freddie and myself head out early to feed the sheep. Thankfully Ballymena has a range of quality coffee shops for me to stop off at on my way into work, it’s an essential part of the day. I’m

Taking Care of The Future Since 1946 Northern Ireland Chest Heart & Stroke has been offering a lifeline to those struggling with the devastating effects of chronic chest, heart and stroke illnesses in Northern Ireland. Much of NICHS’s work is only possible thanks to supporters who leave NICHS a generous and personal gift in their will. Funding ground-breaking research and life-changing services really does make a huge difference to thousands of people across Northern Ireland. Without NICHS supporters’ help, services such as their Long COVID recovery programme just wouldn’t be possible. When thinking about leaving a gift in their will to charity, people often think they need to be wealthy, but this simply isn’t the case. Once you have taken care of loved ones, any gift that you would consider making to NICHS is greatly appreciated. A gift in your will allows NICHS to continue providing lifesaving work, providing immediate care and support to people suffering right now, alongside investing in pioneering research to improve the health and wellbeing of future generations.
If you are planning to make your will this February or March please get in touch to find out about how you can make a will through a local solicitor in return for a donation to NICHS. Please email supportercare@ nichs.org.uk or call 028 9032 0184 for more information.

INTERVIEW
West End star, Wendy Ferguson.
62
EDITED BY JANE HARDY Jane Hardy is a feature writer who has interviewed a few of the big names from Arlene Foster to Mrs Thatcher.
West End Girl Wendy Ferguson goes Into the Woods and tells Jane Hardy about working on her home patch, her early years and the magic of musical theatre.
T
here is a biblical quote about a prophet not being valued in his or her own country. That doesn’t apply, happily, to Derry-born musical star Wendy Ferguson who is taking on the role of the Mother (Jack and the Beanstalk’s mother, that is) in Northern Ireland Opera’s new production of Sondheim’s Into the Woods (1986). It promises to be stellar, not least because the company have secured the services of Ms Ferguson whose musical theatre CV is pretty impeccable. When Andrew Lloyd Webber staged a 25th anniversary event showcasing his work, Wendy Ferguson was there. She played Carlotta in the 2011 London production of Phantom of the Opera and has also appeared in numerous touring adaptations of some of the biggest shows to have sent us out of the theatre humming hit tunes. Apparently, Wendy Ferguson is having the time of her life. She reveals that she’s looking forward to welcoming friends and family from her hometown to the production. The morning we speak on the phone, as Zoom isn’t 100% accommodating after a brief face-to-face (Wendy Ferguson looks striking in red), the singer has been in rehearsal at Rosemary Street prior to entering the Lyric Theatre. “We were prepping scene two.” Ferguson adds that working with Northern Ireland Opera is stimulating. One aspect of this new production of
Sondheim’s Into the Woods is the fact that NI Opera’s Artistic Director Cameron Menzies has decided to allow the cast to sing and perform using their own, mainly Northern Irish, accents instead of going mid-Atlantic. He commented recently in Artbeat in The Irish News that “there’s a musicality and rhythm to the Northern Irish accent which complements the songs and dialogue perfectly”. Wendy Ferguson agrees and told me enthusiastically that she was loving performing in her attractive light Derry-Londonderry accent. “I can’t tell you how excited I am about this. It’s so important for us to hear (those accents), it grounds us in our characters. I agree with Cameron about the Northern Irish voice. There’s a real music in the way we speak – why use five words when you can use 25?” So, the woman she’s playing, the single mother who is bringing up Jack, is a Derry figure, more recognisable to the principally Northern Irish audience. Yet many of us regard Stephen Sondheim, the man responsible for the lyrics to West Side Story, as quintessentially American, a true New Yorker. Wendy Ferguson makes the valid point, as we bat this about, that the genius songwriter was truly universal and spoke to everyone. Into the Woods certainly weaves universal themes about longing for family and home into narratives taken from our best-loved and psychologically acute fairy tales. Our
63
hero and heroine, the Baker and his wife, who long for a child, go through tough experiences before finding their heart’s desire. Similarly, Cinderella, and Jack, of the Beanstalk fame. The narratives are, of course, dark as the Sondheim landscape includes both darkness and light and was created by the man who penned the lines about the moral equivalence we all meet in others, and ourselves: “You’re not good. You’re not bad. You’re just nice. I’m not good. I’m not bad. I’m not nice. I’m the witch.” Wendy Ferguson’s talent was spotted very early, as she later reveals. “My primary school teacher at Mullabuoy told my mother she thought I was very musical because I loved to sing.” How right she was. Classes with music teachers followed – “I chose the piano (as my instrument) and had piano lessons from then on”. Asked what her first publicly performed song was, Wendy replies that it was a traditional Irish air. “It went ‘Over the hills on a summer’s day/ On a donkey cart…’” Having performed at the famous Derry Feis or arts festival, Ms Ferguson moved on. And up. The gifted student, brought up in Derry by very supportive parents, Pauline and Danny, who bought her a piano, ended up winning a place at The Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. Ferguson moved to the capital and lived near her college in the hip concrete surroundings of the Barbican in the City
INTERVIEW
of London. Ferguson says now: “It was just amazing.” The singer recalls the sense of being surrounded by culture and enjoying the Royal Shakespeare’s productions in the famous theatre in the architecturally brutalist complex. “I started going to the theatre a lot, and particularly enjoyed Coriolanus, although I can’t tell you now the names of the actors in it!” She reveals that her parents, her mother was a nurse, made sacrifices to help her succeed. The resulting brilliant career made them proud although sadly, her parents are no longer around to applaud their daughter. Covid restrictions have been scrupulously followed, Wendy reveals. Masks all the way and not the opportunity to sample Belfast’s significant restaurant culture. But, Wendy says, in more normal times she would be going to some of Belfast’s best restaurants. We naturally discuss the brilliance of Sondheim who died at the end of 2021 and whose work somehow defines modern man. And woman, in wry to super-emotional numbers such as Marry Me a Little and Send in the Clowns. Ferguson notes perceptively: “Sondheim was an Oscar Hammerstein protégé but brings his own talent to the American musical. He knew about Brahms and Stravinsky and brought the form to this place.” She says there are many strong women in his work and Sondheim majors in revealing their, and inevitably our, feelings. But it isn’t all intensity, as Ferguson says: “This is one of Sondheim’s funniest musicals.” Expect his droll take on existence, then. A fan of Derry Girls, Wendy Ferguson’s CV includes performances in evergreen shows such as the spiky, scary and humorous Sweeney Todd. “It was in London and went to Broadway, it’s universal.” We discuss what makes a great singing voice and Wendy Ferguson has an interesting answer. “I always go back to the great singers, including Dolly Parton.” Her first big role was in Phantom of the Opera, which has scope for a lot of big emotions, and Ferguson was hooked. Lockdown was tough, Ms Ferguson admits, as she lives alone and was, like many people, isolated during the pandemic. So she has relished working live again and being back onstage. As the West End girl said, quoting from a different musical genre, she’s having the time of her life. The Northern Ireland Opera production of Into the Woods by Stephen Sondheim runs at The Lyric Theatre from February 3 to February 27 (lyrictheatre.co.uk)
It’s so important for us to hear (those accents), it grounds us in our characters. I agree with Cameron about the Northern Irish voice. There’s a real music in the way we speak – why use five words when you can use 25? 64

Makeup and Beauty Influencer
We speak to Makeup and Beauty Influencer, and creator of Kash Beauty, Keilidh Cashell.
How would you describe your style? It is different everyday! In general I tend to dress quite dark. You can take the makeup artist off the makeup counter, but they will continue to wear all black outfits forever. What are your wardrobe staples that you can’t live without? An oversized leather jacket – I have a vintage Harley Davidson leather jacket that just completes every outfit. Do you have a favourite designer or high street brand? Urban Outfitters takes a nice chunk of my wages every month, so I would have to say it! Do you have any style icons? I’ve been loving Miley Cyrus recently. I love that she has a casual style, we see her in a lot that is quite edgy, but then we never quite know what she’s going to come out in. Do you have a skincare regime? Yes I do, that has been struggling recently! I’m in the middle of switching around my products, but a skincare routine is essential for glowing skin, especially when you wear as much makeup as me!
What is your signature scent? I’m still on the hunt for my go-to, but I like quite masculine and musky scents. Are there any haircare products you recommend? I swear by Redken. I haven’t tried anything from them that I haven’t loved. Their Acidic Bonding Concentrate range is amazing.
Fashion Must Have Oversized leather jacket, Ilia Carved Blazer jacket by Letoit.
What is your go-to makeup product? Very hard to choose! But I wouldn’t be able to do my makeup without cream products, especially KASH Beauty Sculpt Sticks of course! They’re essential for getting that natural glow, and just make your skin look sculpted flawlessly. How do you keep fit and healthy, are there any exercises or health foods your swear by? I am the worst person to ask this! I eat like a child and moving a lot isn’t something I’m fond of, but I am interested in changing that. I’ve always wanted to start yoga, so maybe this is the year! 66

’m still wading through a mountain of Christmas chocolates and biscuits, I refuse to give up until I’ve eaten the last one. But excessive amounts of sugar are amongst the biggest culprits for causing skin eruptions, coupled with the cold weather and home heating at full blast, our complexions are really put through the winter wringer. Getting enough rest should be a key mantra for the year ahead if you want to help to get your skin looking calm and collected too. Cutting out the sugar and drinking more water is a must, nothing new of course! You can also do your skin a favour with this divine trio from Senna. Awarded 5 stars in reviews, Sea Algae Cream, makes skin feel supple, restores and moisturises dry, dehydrated skin. Sculpting eye cream, is a lightweight eye treatment cream, small in size but mighty in benefits, helping the eye area look younger and firmer. Last but no means least, Senna Firming Serum, will lift, tighten, and define facial contours. The secret is an ingredient called Fiflow® that infuses skin with oxygen, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen (did you even know skin needed that?). Head to www.sennamakeup.com

Vogue recently named, Kate Moss and Zoë Kravitz, amongst the world’s most stylish people. But according to Google’s Year in Search report, the name most googled alongside “celebrity outfit” in 2021 was Adam Sandler. The 55-year-old actor known for 1990’s comedies including ‘The Wedding Singer’ and ‘Grown up’s’ beat the world’s best known style setters for the top spot. Sandler’s style is somewhat more relaxed than the rest, combining long basket ball shorts with XXXL T-shirts, boxy trainers and wrap-around shades. He’s worn slippers and shorts to film premieres. The comedian and actor Pete Davidson named Sandler as his ‘favourite fashion icon’. On TikTok, more than 330,000 videos use the hashtag #sandlercore. So what does the well-dressed man look like for 2022? The mind boggles!

Elave survey reveals the ravages of winter weather on sensitive Irish skin A new Irish Winter Skincare Survey undertaken by Elave Skincare reveals that 7 out of 10 people here report having dry, sensitive and eczema/psoriasis prone skin that is easily damaged by cold winter weather. Manufactured in Ireland since 1934 by Gardiner Family Apothecary, Elave’s clean skincare formulations are specially created for people with delicate Type I and Type II skin – that’s about 80% of the island’s population. Respondents to our survey revealed that the environment is the biggest trigger for their sensitive skin reactions (45%). Around 9 out of 10 said the most important thing to them is that their face looks good. Some 7 out of 10 said that facial dryness and redness was their biggest skincare challenge. Joanna Gardiner, CEO, said: “It’s a challenging time of year for people with sensitive Irish skin. Freezing cold, biting winds and changes in temperature draw moisture out of the skin and
compromise the dermal barrier, particularly in exposed areas like the face. “Since dry, stressed-out skin becomes red and sore, prompting itching, cracking and flare-ups of skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis and rosacea, it is vital to repair, moisturise and protect for healthy, beautiful skin that always looks its best. “The fact is that you don’t just have to live with the damage caused by the ravages of winter weather - a regular regime using the purest, gentlest, cleanest skincare will make a huge difference to how lovely you look when temperatures dip.” Other key survey findings were: • The next biggest sensitive skin triggers were new skincare products (19%) and scents and dyes (18%). • Half pointed to moisturiser as the key product in their beauty regime, followed by cleanser (1 in 3) • More than half said they have difficulty finding the right skincare solutions • 1 in 4 said they feel they just have to live with their sensitive skin Elave Skincare takes on dry and sensitive skin conditions with sustainable, multi award-winning
formulations that are PETA Approved 92% Vegan and 100% Cruelty-free, ethically produced and sustainable. Six convenient new Elave Skincare Essentials kits contain full-size formulations designed to be used together to provide a 360-degree solution with maximum efficacy.

Rebecca is founder and Director of Physiotherapy at Apex Clinic and Apex Headache Clinic.
Don’t let vertigo get your head in a spin this Valentine’s Day Apex Headache Clinic, Belfast, is Ireland’s first drug free headache and migraine clinic, and has been clearing headaches and migraines for over 20 years. An experienced team of specialist physiotherapists is led by clinic founder and Spinal & Headache Physiotherapy Specialist, Rebecca Nelson. Her unique approach of treating and clearing headaches/migraines, called The Nelson Headache Approach™ is offered in no other clinics and its high success rate explains why people travel from all over the UK and Europe for this treatment. This month, Rebecca Nelson, founder and Spinal & Headache Physiotherapy Specialist at Apex Clinic & Apex Headache Clinic, discusses how getting the correct diagnosis for your vertigo is vital for treating it correctly, and how the practice has been clearing this debilitating condition for years.
Vertigo has devastating effects At Apex Headache Clinic, Belfast we have over 20 years of extensive experience in treating vertigo or dizziness. Approximately 20% of all patients we see suffer with this common health complaint which has devastating symptoms such as poor balance, especially when walking, light headedness or a sense of ‘being
the inner ear, called vestibular vertigo and vertigo originating from the upper neck region of the spine, called cervical vertigo. Cervical vertigo is often overlooked as a cause of vertigo even though its occurrence is extremely common. It is usually the result of stiffness or damage of the upper neck joints of the spine but usually the individual experiences no actual neck pain, only dizziness. Cervical vertigo is often misdiagnosed and treated as vestibular vertigo. One of the features of cervical vertigo is that is does not respond to drugs used to treat inner ear vertigo, so if your vertigo hasn’t cleared up with medication, it is definitely time to consider if it could be stemming from your neck.

Nelson Vertigo Approach™. This treatment is very successful in targeting cervical vertigo at its source and clearing it or significantly improving it in the vast majority of cases. Your initial consultation at Apex Headache Clinic will involve one of our experienced specialist physiotherapists assessing your neck to determine if it is the source of your vertigo. If the assessment confirms that your vertigo stems from your neck, a treatment plan will then follow. Our unique regime of manual physiotherapy treatment involves gentle and safe mobilization techniques of the specific targeted segments of the upper neck region. Patients often start to feel relief within just a few sessions. Don’t let vertigo ruin the quality of your life. HEALTH MATTERS
“My life has completely changed, thanks to Apex Headache Clinic” At the age of just six months, Cian began suffering from migraines, which continued throughout his childhood. After trying every avenue of treatment, at the age of eight, he came to Apex Headache Clinic, Belfast desperate to find a cure. Here, Cian shares how the clinic’s unique regime of specialist headache physiotherapy treatment, called The Nelson Headache Approach™, cleared his migraines and completely changed his life.
Cian, when did your migraines begin? All I’ve ever known is life with headaches. I’m told that at the age of six months, I began suffering from them. With the onset of a headache, my temperature dropped, I became pale and the pain was so severe that it would cause me to vomit. Each severe episode would last for two hours and then gradually ease from there, before returning 10 to 14 days later. This cycle continued like clockwork over the years. Nothing in particular seemed to trigger it and we tried all angles such as consulting GPs and pediatricians, undergoing allergy tests and having MRI scans. You name it, we tried it. When I was properly diagnosed as having migraines, I was told that it was something I would have to live with and that I might eventually grow out of it. As this was
What led you to Apex Headache Clinic? My mum was chatting in work about my migraines to one of the physios there, who told her that she was attending a headache course, run by Rebecca Nelson from Apex Headache Clinic. She asked if she could mention my case to her. Following this, Rebecca asked us to come in for a consultation. She diagnosed my migraines as stemming from my neck and a course of treatment followed. I noticed a difference straight away. My migraines became less frequent and severe and now I’m thrilled to say that I am migraine free. How has Apex Headache Clinic changed your life? We live in Cavan and all I can say is that it was definitely worth the two-and-a-half-hour drive! My Granny recently commented that I’m a lot more confident and care-free now, which I guess comes from not worrying about how a migraine could ruin my day. In a nutshell, Apex Headache Clinic really has changed my life.
severely affecting my life, it was really hard to hear and to think that I was stuck with these migraines forever.
pain to ease. I just wanted to be left alone. Painkillers gave me no relief at all. I couldn’t understand why it was just me that suffered these and wished I could get on with doing things without being scared of a migraine stopping me. Although I usually had them in the evenings, I was always worried about getting one in school. In fact, the first time it happened at school, my teacher couldn’t believe just how bad I was.
How did the headaches affect your life? In a way, I became used to having migraines. Because I developed them when I was so young, I didn’t know any different. However, it was still horrendous. When a migraine struck, I would curl up on the sofa for hours, waiting for the

Sharon Malcolm enters ‘British Hairdressing Awards’ Hall of Fame
Local Newtonards hairdresser and proprietor of Sharon Malcolm Hairdressing, Sharon Malcolm, was announced as the Northern Ireland Hairdresser of the Year at the 2021 British Hairdressing Awards which took place in November. Sharon also took home one of the top awards on the evening for ‘Trend Image of the Year’ - the second consecutive year that Sharon has won this accolade.
Held at Grosvenor House, this is the third time that Sharon has been named as Northern Ireland Hairdresser of the Year at the British Hairdressing Awards, achieving her personal goal of being welcomed into the prestigious (Hairdressers Journal) British Hairdressing Awards Hall of Fame. Celebrating 21 years in business in October, this latest honour for Sharon Malcolm is one of the highest accolades in hairdressing and achieving a place in the Hall of Fame is no mean feat. To be inducted in to the British Hairdressing Awards’ Hall of Fame, hairdressers must win the same category at HJ‘s British Hairdressing Awards sponsored by Schwarzkopf Professional three times. Commenting on joining the top hairdressers in the UK in the Hall of Fame, Sharon Malcolm adds: “From I was a young girl, all I ever wanted to be was a hairdresser. Since opening Sharon Malcolm Hairdressing, it’s been my long-held goal to be named as Northern Ireland Hairdresser of the Year three times and fulfil my dream of being inducted into the British Hairdressing Awards Hall of Fame. “This year, I’m completely honoured and
thrilled to have been named NI Hairdresser of the Year for a third time for my latest collection, ‘Presence’ and to have won Trend Image of the year again!” Hosted by TV and radio personality, Rylan Clark, and Executive Director of Hairdressers Journal International, Jayne Lewis-Orr, Sharon was presented with her award at the black-tie awards event, where she celebrated the win with members of the team from Sharon Malcolm Hairdressing. Sharon continues: “I am absolutely elated about this win, particularly following what has been such a challenging couple of years for many families and business owners. “I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of my customers and my incredible team for their ongoing support over the past two years. Established in Belfast in the 1830s, and purchased by Harry Neill in 1869, the Samuel Gelston’s brand has remained in the Neill family for five generations. The business has been revived by Harry Neill’s, great, great grandson, Johnny Neill. Samuel Gelston’s Blended Irish Whiskey is made from a blend of locally sourced Irish malted barley and grain that is triple distilled for smoothness, then matured in the finest quality ex-bourbon oak casks. This combination of triple distillation, plus the finest ingredients and cask aging creates an elegantly smooth yet expressive whiskey with rich flavours that can be savoured neat, over ice or mixed into a long refreshing serve. Light golden in colour and bottled at 40% ABV, on the palate a little spice, grain and nut combine with flavours of smooth honey. With a long elegant finish, this award winning whisky will leave drinkers wanting more.

Jervis Wedding Photography THE Husband and Wife Team Paul and Judith Jervis have loved working as a husband and wife team photographing weddings over the past 13 years. They are passionate about capturing the heart of each wedding day and creating beautiful memories for every couple to treasure for years to come. With their rebranding last year came Newborns by Judith where she comes to your home to capture the tiny perfection of your new arrival. Judith has always loved working with children so this was a natural development for the business. Just like with the wedding photography, the personal touch and exceptional service and products are an integral part of this new business. It was great to have Paul back to photograph another cover for the Ulster Tatler, bringing the same relaxed style to the photoshoot as he brings to his wedding photography. We love his creative input and attention to detail, from bringing a mug that complemented the set to having an active input in the styling. Paul said “I love being part of the Ulster Tatler cover shoots, it’s a great experience and a chance to exercise my creative muscles.“
Makeup For Every Occasion Rebecca Duff has been working in the makeup and beauty industry for six years, previously working with award-winning makeup artist, Paddy McGurgan. Her work is mainly focused on beauty and wedding makeup, but has also been involved in a range of editorial photoshoots including being featured in Vogue, and she also provides lessons for those wanting to learn on themselves or clients. Rebecca says of her work; “My aim is to create bespoke makeup for each individual, with a real emphasis on making each client the best version of themselves. For me, it’s all about the dewy, fresh skin, natural brows and beautiful eye makeup to match. I use high quality, cruelty free products to achieve this and have a vegan line of makeup if required.” We were delighted to have Rebecca onboard for this month’s front cover photoshoot with Ballycastle Homecare.

New for Twenty-Two Mode German Kitchens took a look at some trends they think will be popular in kitchens this year! Tactile surfaces are definitely becoming more desirable on door fronts so it is thought that they will feature regularly in kitchens this year. Concrete or woodgrain laminates give your kitchen depth without breaking the bank and are easy to maintain too. Texture adds versatility to a kitchen rather than using flat finishes on all your door fronts. Patterned tiles are making a comeback in 2022. Whether it be on your floor or wall, they are tipped to be popular and can add texture or a pop of colour into your kitchen. Whilst laminate worktops still account for the majority of the lower-budget market, we have found that in the
end if the budget allows, it is now standard in most kitchens. The ease of cold, hot and boiling water on tap as well as the option to add chilled and sparkling water plus not needing a kettle on the worktop all go hand-in-hand with a German kitchen built for functionality and designed to be streamlined. Open-plan living continues to be a popular way of living and one that suits the kitchen designs very well. Matching or complimentary furniture across openplan rooms such as coordinating shelving in the living area or extra cupboards in the dining area are often installed. Your home needs to work for your lifestyle so Mode German Kitchens want to know what you need from them to make your dream into a reality!
mid-to high-end market Quartz is the preferred option. It is essentially maintenance-free and gives you the choice of colour and texture to suit any kitchen design. It’s not expected for these choices to change as they are unrivaled in terms of price and functionality; however other available options include granite, acrylic, glass, stainless-steel or solid surface. In terms of colour, grey, white and cream are still very popular but a trend can be seen for the year bringing more colour into kitchens too. Black is definitely making a resurgence as a staple colour as well as both bolder and more muted accent colours. These can be seen in door fronts, worktops, open shelving, splashbacks, appliances or furnishings in the room. The Quooker boiling water tap will definitely be a 2022 trend. It is no longer an upgrade which people add at the

Tips To Improve Your Living Space We have made a list of some of our top tips on what little things you can do to help improve your living space. Evaluate your space and examine your priorities The first step to minimalist living is stepping back and observing. Examine your home, your belongings, your lifestyle, and your attitude from an objective perspective. Do you own multiple versions of the same items?
Do you feel stressed about trying to find a place to store the blankets your grandma knit for you? If so, it may be time to de-clutter your spaces. Good lighting changes everything Update the lighting schemes in your home and be amazed at how different your space will look after adding or subtracting the light levels. Revive a dated fireplace Have the brick painted white, stack birch logs on the firebox floor, and purchase a hot new hearth-tool set. Update all your bathroom fixtures Refresh your bathroom by replacing with the latest trends and styles to give your bathroom that ‘brand new feel’. Grow plants! Add some colour and life to a lonely spot with a houseplant. Some low-maintenance options include jade, which flourishes in sunny areas; delicate asparagus ferns for indirect lighting; and philodendrons and peace lilies for dimly lit nooks. Plants also help to clean the air around us and can be improve our mood, focus and productivity while reducing stress and tiredness. Add new photos to your old ones Create a gallery wall in your home and fill it with old and new memories. Photos can add a sense of self to a room to make it yours.

Tile Trends 2022 The trend this last several years has been grey and muted backgrounds with splashes of accented colour. We now find stronger, bolder surfaces starting to emerge, particularly pinks, greens and blues. Alongside these, calming corals with muted, peachy undertones will emerge as this colour encourages us all to embrace our vulnerabilities (and this past two years have highlighted many of these) and envelopes us in feelings of comfort and peace. Coral matches well with the trendiest colour for 2022, pink. Whether it is the soft, red sky hues of pacific pink evoking the sun setting on a warm beach holiday or the shockingly vibrant hot pink, all combine to create uplifting environments. At the most recent Cersaie World Tile Fair held in Bologna, Italy, the desire to bring nature into the home was unmistakeably the leading trend among tile manufacturers. Many new organic, nature-themed ranges with leafy greens and plant prints were strongly prevalent colours, and these were combined with soft ivory and light cream tones providing a visual comforting warmth. One big trend that will continue to grow exponentially in 2022 is small format tiles laid in herringbone patterns and these will be heavily utilised for proliferations of the brighter colours that were bursting out to create eye-catching wall and floor features with the sole aim of energising home owners who wish to personalise their interior design spaces. For help to explore your creative design side and find the perfect combinations of tiles for your interior design or outdoor landscaping projects seek out the experts at Armatile. Quick, Easy and Sustainable With unparalleled functionality, intuitive and seamless water mode transitions and in-built safety mechanisms which prevent turning on the boiling water by accident, Quooker delivers the tap that does it all. Thanks to its CUBE accessory, all Quooker taps can now dispense chilled and sparkling water at the touch of a button. Saving time and space, with CUBE the immediacy of super chilled and filtered water can be enjoyed without having to wait or waste water. Furthermore, one canister of C02 yields 60 litres of carbonated water which significantly reduces the need for single-use plastic bottles. The average UK household uses a staggering 360 plastic bottles per year, resulting in huge volumes of waste nationwide. With sustainability increasingly at the forefront of consumer purchase decisions, it has never been more important to find creative solutions around the problem of waste. Dispensing precisely the amount needed at any given moment, and with canisters that can be returned and re-filled after use, CUBE ensures responsible and more sustainable consumption. All Quooker taps continue to use very little electricity and give staggering energy saving results; thanks to its sophisticated stateof-the-art tank technology, it takes very little energy (just 10 watts) to keep the water in the tank at 110°C. Water only starts to boil when the tap is turned on and the temperature of the outflowing water drops to 100°C. While the water is coming out of the tap, fresh water immediately flows into the tank to replace the exact amount extracted ready for the next use.
Looking at the Layout: Island or Peninsula, what works best? With most new build homes there can be a number of options for the general shape of the kitchen. Often the most appealing feature is an island with a sink in the middle of the room and this can be the right way to go. However, there may be more choice than this - a peninsula often works better, or at least differently.
For more information, visit www.quooker.co.uk
• Islands take up more room whereas peninsulas can be designed where islands don’t work as well, making sure to leave around 1 meter around each side typically. • Peninsula designs give a space for the cook to work and can give a more personal feel to the cooking experience whereas an island layout often encourages people to walk around the cook at times. • The peninsula would typically give more worktop space than an island layout. It may however introduce a corner unit which tend to be less practical. Make sure you know why you want an island. What is it for? • Storage? • Worktop space? • The hob, sink. Or both • Dining • Keep others out of your way! The rest of the room and the style of the kitchen will obviously play a part decision about the central layout but as long as you have thought about how you want to use the kitchen you can usually come up with something special.

SPEAKS style, however the important characteristic for us is that the style of the home reflects the personality and taste of who lives there.
Ulster tatler speaks to Conor Brady from Des Ewing Architects about their style, keeping up with trends and making sure they meet their client’s needs. Where do you draw your creativity from at the start of each individual project? Creativity can come from many different sources. Every client has specific requirements and priorities when it comes to developing their brief. Therefore, we draw inspiration from them and their family, we spend time on the site and explore the surrounding area. Every site is different, so we try to get a feeling for the place, its defining qualities and possibilies. Architecturally how would you describe your style? We try not to follow architectural trends, but rather base our design ethos on a timeless aesthetic. We love to design contemporary homes that have a positive and meaningful impact on the lives of our clients and their families. We hope our style has evolved and matured over the years. An elegant home can be classical, modern, or traditional in architectural
Keeping informed of the latest developments in the industry is crucial for your sector. How do you stay up to date with the latest and future trends? We like to follow the work of other internationally acclaimed residential architects. Online journals that celebrate the best projects around the world are very useful to keep creatively informed and stimulated. We would recommend a magazine called Enki.
Porcellana Tile Studio is an award winning tile and stone studio specialising in luxurious interiors for private clients, designers and architects, offering a boutique service, original ideas, exceptional quality and a friendly attitude.
Who has been your biggest inspiration to you professionally and personally? Over the years I have greatly benefited from the experiences of tutors, senior architects and technicians, contractors & consultants. “The Boss” Des himself has been extremely influential in my development and understanding of our profession. Collaboration and constructive criticism are essential to the creative process!
The showroom based in the gorgeous Carnegie Building on the Donegall Road in Belfast is laid out in a unique way, creating a comfortable and relaxed environment in which clients can view the amazing range of tiles and stone on display. Each year, the team personally select each tile and porcelain range so you can always choose from the latest Italian and Spanish designs. The highly experienced team at Porcellana pride themselves on providing excellent customer service with a focus on detail, from initial design concepts through to delivery. Working with an array of clients, from architects and interior designers to private self-builders and renovators, the personal touch is evident throughout.
How would you summarise architecture and what it means to you? For me, architecture is a true passion, it is a challenging but extremely rewarding vocation. Des Ewing Architects takes great satisfaction from the strong working relationships that we build with our clients. The studio hopes that our portfolio is a reflection of the hard work and passion for good design that we strive for.

Tips To Improve Your Garden For Spring As we move out of the depths of winter and make the much awaited transition into spring, it’s time to awaken your garden. The new season encourages growth and flourishment now is the perfect time to plant those summer - flowering bulbs and seeds to ensure your garden is brimming with life and colour in the summer months. Summer gardens are made in the spring. The Big Clean Up This should include tasks such as deep cleaning greenhouses and plant pots, power-hosing and weeding patios and ensuring garden furniture is revived for the
anticipated spring and summer evenings. It’s worth braving the cold, as once the prespring clean is complete, regular garden maintenance is made easier. Ordering Summer Bulbs and Sowing Seeds A cold, wintery day is the perfect time to start browsing for some fresh summer bulbs and seeds to grow this year. There are a number of plants which have a longer growing season and will need to be planted now to ensure maximum potential in the upcoming months. Pest Control Hunting down any unwanted garden guests now will save a lot of time in the summer months. Take a closer look for any slugs or snails who may have taken up residence during the winter months. This will also help to protect any damage or spreading to new seedlings. Fences, Gates and Trellises Check fences, gates and trellises as well as any outdoor decking for any signs of weather damage or decay. Sourcing and fixnig these problems early will allow more time to fix or replace any broken segments.

Down Royal Annual Mencap Race Day Returns for 2022 Down Royal Racecourse has announced Mencap Northern Ireland as their official Charity Partner of The Year, with its annual fundraiser set to return in Summer 2022. Following a two year lay-off due to COVID-19, Mencap Northern Ireland and Down Royal will partner to raise funds for those living locally with a learning disability. Mencap provides round-theclock care to people living with a learning disability, promotes independence, and recognises their achievements whilst providing advice on employment and education. Emma Meehan, Chief Executive of Down Royal
Racecourse said: “After two years, we are delighted to finally welcome Mencap Northern Ireland back to the racecourse as our official charity partner. “The annual Mencap Race Day is one of our most highly anticipated yearly fixtures and we are proud to be partnering with Mencap again to support such an incredibly worthwhile charity.” On June 17th, Mencap’s Special Events Committee will host the annual Mencap Race Day fundraiser at Down Royal, allowing racegoers to donate to the charity throughout the day. Marian Nicholas, Honorary
Life Member and Chairperson of Mencap Special Events Committee has experienced the tremendous impact of this partnership, with her daughter having attended Mencap’s children centre. She commented: “We are thrilled to be announced as Down Royal’s Charity of the Year. In previous years, our partnership with the racecourse has had a remarkable impact on our members, with funds raised by
generous racegoers allowing the charity to provide the necessary support and services for families when they need it the most.” Sean Conlon, Fundraising Product Lead at Mencap Northern Ireland said: “The partnership between Mencap and Down Royal has provided us with such an amazing opportunity to raise much needed funds and to make a difference to those living with a learning disability and their families. The partnership between Down Royal and Mencap has exceeded all expectations over the last 20 years with racegoers raising over £1million for the charity to date.

The Treble
Laird Law of Laird Law Male Grooming discusses the evolution of his salon in Ballymena. I’ve welcomed two new barbers to the team. Aidy Boyd first came to me in 2018 at the age of 29 and is now manager of the shop. Not only is he a
great barber, but he is also reliable, hardworking, organised and a great asset to the team. He can be found on Instagram as “Aidybhair”. Farrah
Neeson is the first female employee to join Laird Law Male Grooming. She has added a great dynamic to the team and is now one of the most
popular barbers in Ballymena. Farrah is testament to hard work paying off and a credit to herself. Her Instagram is “farrahfades”.
We have made a change in our product supplier switching to Murdoch
London. After being with HanzDeFuko for 5 years I thought it was time to test other high-end products out there. We have also started the ball Laird Law Male Grooming was established in 2013 and started off with me
renting a chair with the dream to one day own my own salon. After a few years, along with my first apprentice and some encouragement from my other half I bit the bullet and rented a premise.
rolling in developing our own hair and beard products. The samples are
just arriving this week instead of going to a company with already made
products and just putting our logo on it we wanted to do it right so we are working closely with a pharmacy in California and a local company in the design and packaging we hope to have this off the ground in March.
I wanted a barber shop that fitted the brand I wanted to sell: high end and
sophisticated. Terry Design bespoke make fit company brought my vision to reality. During this time period we were finalists in the Northern Ireland
Hair and Beauty Awards. We won Male Grooming Salon of the Year 2018
and 2019. It’s been a privilege to be given that title, but I do believe it is one we deserve as we never let anything less leave our shop. We are
constantly raising the bar on our haircuts, always keeping ourselves up to date with trends and on the latest men’s skincare and wedding packages.
I am proud of my team and what we have achieved over the past few
years and after Covid and how everyone has adapted. Morale in the shop is always positive, and we couldn’t be happier winning Male Grooming
Venue of the Year for the third consecutive year in a row. We always want to strive and be at the top of the game, pushing ourselves. We all have
a passion for the job and like to keep our atmosphere relaxed, friendly,
personal and fun. Always putting a smile on our client’s face, no matter what their age.
We have supported our local Ballymena Football Team and get involved in many charity functions as well as donating vouchers to charities such
as Marie Curie and Children’s Hospice. Before Covid, I qualified with an Assessing Vocational Achievement - Level 3 which allows me to lecture
Laird Law, Farrah Neeson and Aidy Boyd at the NI Hair and Beauty Awards 2021
part time in the NRC colleges. From that I went on to help with the board
at the NRC to reconstruct the barbering course and help modernise it bringing hairdressing and barbering together.
We now currently offer steamed facials, facial massages, gold collagen masks to our clients. We have shave kits from Marram.co and special
chrome brush and bowl that can be engraved with a personal message. We are currently listed as a trusted supplier of the prestigious Galgorm
Resort & Spa. We have linked up with other well-known brands such as
Remus Uomo, Hire Class, Scott McGarry Gladiator Gym, Leighmour House, Newtownabbey Borough Council.

T R A I N I N G , W I N N I N G A N D S U P P O RT I N G Laveau Hair is a Multi Award Winning Hair Salon based in Dundonald, Belfast and was established in 2017 by Owner and L’Oreal Colour Specialist & Kerastase Specialist Gemma Smith. Since opening in 2017, Gemma was joined by Demi then followed by KJ and most recently two new apprentices Ami & Cody. Since opening, the team at Laveau have worked tirelessly picking up award after award. How did Covid affect the Business? The global pandemic had a massive effect on all businesses throughout the world. After hospitality, the hair & beauty industry was probably one of the worst affected and is still being affected by it. One minute we were open the next we were closed then open for a few weeks then closed. However, during the times we were closed, we didn’t stop learning with thanks to the likes of Sophia Hilton and her team at Not Another Academy, Sally Brooks and her team at Brooks & Brooks and everyone at Loreal’s education team. They put on a lot of fantastic online education courses which helped to keep us sharpening our skills. I am also very thankful to have such a great team within the salon it is very true that teamwork makes the dream work. Why Loreal & Kerastase? We choose Loreal as our colour house for the salon as they are world leaders and innovators in hair colour
industry and of course their education is fantastic. As for choosing Kerastase, we wanted a brand that we believed in, and Kerastase is it. They have a huge family of products from the ‘Fantastic Fusio Dose’ instant treatments to their latest ‘Chromo Absolu Range’. Having Kerastase within the salon allows us to select luxury treatments, shampoos and conditioners to tackle all of our clients’ hair needs.
The best tip we can give anyone about their hair is LOOK AFTER IT. Invest in professional products. Yes, there is a big price difference between the shampoo and conditioner that you buy in a supermarket compared to what we sell in the salon, but I can assure you that it is worth it. Your hair is your crown, there is a reason we don’t just have 1 shampoo and 1 conditioner at our backwash area. The Kerastase range is designed for specific hair needs. There is no 1 shampoo that does it all. You need a haircare routine suited to your hair needs. There are shampoos, conditioners, masks, treatments, and oils all of which tackle certain hair needs. We are always happy to recommend clients and non-clients a hair care routine to suit their hair.
We always try to support local Our bottled water supplier is a unique local social enterprise called Clearer Water; they are an ethical brand that focuses on providing paid employment for adults with disabilities. For coffee, we choose Suitor Coffee, with Both Nicola & Chris being from the local area it was a no brainer for us to support them.

Starting with a team of just two, myself and a girl Annie Loughran, I have since then grown our team to 6 offering all aspects of hair and beauty. During lockdown, I had my staff carry out different courses including health and safety, covid 19 training, domestic violence awareness etc, for when we reopen to be able to be there even more for our clients. From blowdries, lashes, nails and make up I wanted my salon to be a one stop shop for everything and to make my clients look and feel amazing when they leave my door.
RED HAIR STUDIO Red Hair Studio has been an established business in Ballymena for over 20 years and under new management since 2019. My
Jim Gracey Sports Journalist & Vice Chair of Mary Peters Trust
1. What do you love most about your job? The variety – no two days are ever the same. The people you meet through sport, many of whom have become personal friends; the privilege of being afforded up close access to sporting events and people, and the sheer enjoyment of telling their stories. There is particular pleasure in seeing young sportspeople going on to achieve greatness in their fields. 2. What has been your career highlight to date? Being present at landmark victories for my three favourite teams… Glenavon winning the Irish Cup in 1992 (v Linfield at The Oval); Manchester United winning the Champions League in 1999 (v Bayern Munich in Barcelona) and Northern Ireland winning a first Euro finals game against Ukraine in Lyon in 2016.
7. What do you think is the best thing about living in Northern Ireland? We are never more than a hour away from the coast. 8. What is your mantra or favourite quote that you live by? You make your own luck in this life. 9. Who has been your biggest influence? My former boss at the Belfast Telegraph, the late, great Malcolm Brodie.
3. What are your favourite hobbies/activities outside of work? I enjoy walking, cycling and my work with the Mary Peters Trust, raising funds to support our up and coming young sportspeople.
10. FAVOURITE
4. What is your daily routine? Nothing is routine in journalism. You plan, of course, but the main thrust is reacting to and developing stories as they happen. 5. Do you have a specific fitness regime? Swimming, walking and cycling between stories. 6. Do you have any tips for staying positive? Think positive and ignore negativity. A healthy, active mind helps sustain a healthy, active body. 138

How can you save money, and still do your bit for the environment? Making your home warmer and greener has never been more important. With Access4Lofts, it’s never been easier or more affordable either! Climate change has never been a hotter topic than it is right now and it’s clear that everyone needs to do their part in the years to come. According to the Energy Saving Trust, as much as 25% of the heat in your home is lost through your loft or roof space. It could even be as high as a third or more in some properties. It’s a major problem for a lot of homes around the UK, but fortunately it is also one with an easy solution - having the right insulation installed. While Access4Lofts specialises in supplying and installing loft ladders, hatches and boarding, they also offer loft insulation that could reduce this heat loss by as much as 20%. That’s going to mean not just a significant saving on your energy bills, but also a big step in the right direction when it comes to your household’s impact on climate change. While exact costs obviously vary from house to house, the typical price for insulating your loft in a detached house is around £395, and you can expect annual savings of around £225 on your heating bills*. Interested in finding out more about how loft insulation could work in your home? Find a local installer in your area, or call now for a FREE quotation on 028 3886 8068 or fill in our ‘request a quote’ form online at www.access4lofts.co.uk/requesta-quote and they will contact you. *Source - Energy Saving Trust (www.energysavingtrust.org.uk)

New Skoda Enyaq iV hits the mark Skoda might have just made the best electric SUV yet, writes James Stinson Another day, another electric car to review but it’s never boring. Because while manufacturers had petrol and diesel cars pretty much licked, we are still in the pushing the boundaries area of electric car development. This one will have more range or charge a little quicker than that one. This one’s bigger, that one’s cheaper. Manufacturers are still trying to find the sweet spot in every segment of the market. Credit to Skoda then for landing this new Enyaq iV near the bullseye when it comes to making an affordable, roomy all-electric SUV. This is Skoda’s first electric car though it’s not exactly starting from a blank sheet of paper. It’s using the same platform that supports VW Group’s other electric offerings – the VW ID.3, ID.4 and Audi e-tron. And given the recent success of the Karoq and Kodiaq, it’s no surprise that Skoda was tasked with churning out a truly credible electric-powered SUV for a little over £32,000.
Key to any electric car is the size of the battery pack. The Enyaq iV has two options: the 58kWh iV60’ or the 77kWh iV80. The smaller battery model produces 177bhp through a rear mounted electric motor powering the rear wheels, while the 201bhp iV 80 is also rear-wheel drive. If you want some extra zest and grip, there’s also an all-wheel drive 260bhp iV 80X version. In rear-wheel-drive form the larger battery has a claimed range for 331 miles while the smaller one boasts a still respectable 256 miles. Whether you get anywhere near that depends on lots of factors including how hard you drive, whether you’ve got energy sapping features like the aircon on and even the temperature outside. If it’s your main car and you think you’ll be doing lots of long journeys, you’ll probably want the longer range model. It’s also a little quicker, though not by much, taking the Enyaq iV from 0-60 in a spritely 8.2 seconds. As with all electric cars, the power is delivered in a smooth
linear fashion while some 310Nm of torque means overtaking is a doddle. The Enyaq iV supports 50kW charging as standard, with the option of upgrading the iV 60 model to 100kW and the iV 80 to 125kW. Admittedly, these fast chargers are thin on the ground in Northern Ireland but if you do find one, the standard car will charge from 0-80% in around an hour. Use a 7kW home wallbox, which most will do, and it takes 9 hrs 30 mins or 13 hours depending on the battery size. Where the Enyaq iV really scores over rivals like the VW ID.4 and the established Kia e-Niro is on size and practicality. The Enyaq iV is tall and wide while Skoda has also stretched the VW platform a little more to provide extra room at the back. The cabin is bright and spacious with loads of head and shoulder room front and back. The boot – at some 585 litres - is considerably bigger than those found in the VW ID.4 and Kia e-Niro. It’s really practical. And despite it’s size and weight,
140
it drives pretty well too. The battery pack is stored beneath the seats so the centre of gravity is low, which means there’s none of the body roll you sometimes associate with petrol/dieselengined SUVs. All trim levels of the Enyaq get a huge, easy-to-use 13inch touchscreen positioned high up on the dashboard that’s tilted slightly towards the driver. Other standard features include a DAB radio, built-in navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring, LED headlights, dual-zone climate control, cruise control and rear parking sensors. By far the best value is the entrylevel Enyaq iV 60 model, which qualifies for the government’s £2,500 plug-in car grant, so you’ll pay just over £32,000. After that, there’s a big step up to the iV 80, which starts at more than £39,000 and the iV 80X which tops out the range at £46,000.

Foster Carers urgently needed in Northern Ireland Action for Children have made an urgent call for potential foster carers to come forward in Northern Ireland. Avery Bowser, Fostering Services Manager, explained: “The need is very great in Northern Ireland at the moment but the numbers coming forward have been too small. “We know that there are lots of people who have the space in their home to foster but they are often put off by myths about fostering. They think it’s only for certain types of people. “We need people from different backgrounds and communities to become foster carers because our children are all so different. “At Action for Children we provide foster families that have the warmth and stability that enable children to cope with the changes that life brings them. We do that by recruiting ordinary people, from all walks of life, who do something extraordinary – become a foster carer.” Avery is asking readers to think about fostering or encourage someone else who could foster. “All kinds of people can foster. You have to be over 21, have a spare room, the ability to work with children and have the time in your life to give. “So please give our friendly fostering team a call. The need in Belfast is very urgent and I am appealing for your help.” If you are interested in becoming a foster carer or would like to find out more, please contact Action for Children’s fostering team on 028 9046 0500 or email fostercareni@actionforchildren.org.uk
