BELFAST SKIN CLINIC Belfast Skin Clinic is one of only a few commercial buildings in Northern Ireland not to use fossil fuels, and the only clinic to do so. A solar PV array powers an air-source heat pump which in turn provides hot water for underfloor heating and taps. The building is low energy, using passive solar gains from its south facing windows, high insulation, heat recovery ventilation and low E double glazing with argon filled cavities. The building was originally a large, semi-detached house which was later converted to a small care home. It had been derelict for seven years, had serious structural problems due to water ingress and extensive dry rot. In terms of design, we endeavoured to bring pure clarity to the interior by wrapping the consulting/treatment rooms around a bright, top-lit circulation space with an elegant white steel and frameless glass staircase. We have had much positive feedback regarding this building; patients love its bright, cheerful interior and staff look forward to coming into their light-bathed workstations.
