EDITOR’S LETTER
The Awards Season
EDITOR: Christopher Sherry DEPUTY EDITOR: Joanne Harkness EDITORIAL MANAGER: James Sherry
As the saying goes, awards ceremonies are a bit like buses. None come along for two years and then two are launched at once. This month sees the launch of the inaugural Ulster Tatler Influential Women of the Year Awards and The Ulster Tatler Awards. The Ulster Tatler Influential Women of the Year Awards aims to acknowledge women in Northern Ireland who have made a contribution to life here: no matter how big or small. If you would like to nominate someone turn to page 66-67 of this issue for full details on how to do so. All we need is their name and a few words about why you think they should be acknowledged in this way. There are five categories to choose from. The recipients will be announced over lunch on Saturday 11th June 2022 in the rather grand surroundings of the dining room at the Ulster Reform Club on 4 Royal Avenue in Belfast city centre. It is hard to believe it but the Ulster Tatler Awards are now in their 15th year. This year as well as the normal 13 categories we have introduced a new category: Arts Person of the Year. As usual we are keen to get as many votes as possible across all 14 categories. Voting takes a few seconds. Just remember you can vote in as many categories as you like but you can only vote once. For all you need to know turn to page 122-123 or visit ulstertatler.com. Happy voting!

LIFE & TIMES EDITED BY KATHY CLUGSTON
Kathy Clugston is a freelance radio presenter. She chairs the long-running BBC Radio 4 programme ‘Gardeners’ Question Time’ and presents the weekly entertainment show ‘The Ticket’ on BBC Radio Ulster.
MAKING A HABIT OF IT
This month Kathy discusses how we can form habits and ultimately make them a permanent behaviour.
We’re well into the New Year now. How are your resolutions going? Still attending the gym? Easing off on the chocolate biscuits and the booze? I don’t bother with January resolutions but that doesn’t mean I’m not on a constant quest for selfimprovement. Every other month is filled with good intentions: to eat more healthily, be more active, be more informed about world events, buy fewer, better clothes, use up all my skincare before buying more, and so on. If you have tried to make changes in your life and have not so much backslidden as reversed at full throttle into a deep ditch, help is at hand. I know this because for some reason I keep stumbling across books, podcasts and radio programmes on this subject. The main message of all of them is that willpower simply won’t cut it. It can take us through the euphoric early stages of a big change, but, like a newbie embarking on Couch to 5K, soon runs out of steam. The key word is ‘habits’. Behaviours, good or bad, that we repeat subconsciously or with little thought - biting our nails, having a biscuit with cup of tea, snoozing the alarm fifty times before getting up - are habits, and as any of you who have engaged in a nightly toothbrushing battle with toddlers know, habits aren’t instinctive. We have to be trained, or train ourselves,
into them. Once habits are embedded they are hard to let go of. We feel weird if we don’t do them. Another important word is ‘friction’. If you want to give up something, rather than simply telling yourself not to do it, you need to add friction - in other words make it more difficult and unpleasant to do. A good example of this is smoking, which many of us tried and failed to give up for years. How many smokers do you know now? Rising prices didn’t persuade us to ditch cigarettes; gruesome pictures of diseased lungs on the packs made no difference, nor did doctors telling us we would die early and horribly. It was only when shops hid the cigarettes away where we couldn’t see them and we had to physically get off our backsides and haul ourselves outside into the cold to smoke, did we think: “Actually, I can’t be bothered with this any more.” Other examples of adding friction would be: removing social media apps from your phone, unsubscribing from clothing shop newsletters, not buying the biscuits so they aren’t on hand, anything that makes doing the bad thing more difficult. It follows, then, that to form a good habit you need to remove friction. James Clear, the author of the global bestseller Atomic Habits, tells a story about flossing his teeth. For years, despite knowing he should floss
and having loads of those wee flossing sticks in his bathroom drawer, he never flossed. All it took to resolve the problem was putting the sticks in a little bowl on top of the sink where they were easy to reach. Simple as that. A guest on a podcast called Works For Me found the only way she would go for a run every morning was if she slept in her running gear. A bit extreme, but whatever works. I have been trying to go for a walk first thing and I find that laying out clothes so that I put them on as soon as I get up really helps. The unread gardening books on my shelf are put out on the table where I will see them and be more
inclined to read a chapter. You can add a new habit to an old one so you don’t really notice: for example, do a crossword every morning with your cup of tea or stand on one leg when you brush your teeth. Make good habits easy, attractive and rewarding, then repeat, repeat, repeat. For how long, you ask? Well, it depends on the habit but one popular idea is 21/90 21 days to form the habit then a further 90 days to make it permanent behaviour. It’s worth a try. Who knows what you might achieve before the next edition of Ulster Tatler plops onto your mat.

INTERVIEW Author, Wendy Erskine.

WRITTEN BY JANE HARDY Jane Hardy is a feature writer who has interviewed a few of the big names from Arlene Foster to Mrs Thatcher.
Long Story Short Belfast author Wendy Erskine, discusses her short stories, including her new release Dance Move, with Jane Hardy.
S
hort story writers provide you with a quick pass to a different world. In the case of acclaimed Belfast author Wendy Erskine, it’s an alternative world that may resemble ours, but is frequently offcentre. Like that described by the late, great US short fiction writer Raymond Carver, only not so druggy or depressing. Erskine (53) who arrives at the Ormeau Road café after teaching, wearing a fabulous red dress, agrees. “Yes, I suppose so.” We discuss the title story from her new collection, Dance Move, published by Picador, and published by The Stinging Fly Press In Ireland. The tense relationship between the teenage daughter, Clara, and her mother, Kate, is brilliantly done. There’s a scene where the daughter and her unsuitable friend, Stacey, are trying out moves on the decking, including a pretty sensual routine in which the friend shakes her backside, then pretends she’s making out with the garden feature. “That decking had been put down by Kate’s dad. That made it worse.” The denouement, when the girls attend a rave Kate had forbidden (but her more indulgent husband allowed) and don’t return on time. So Kate goes to pick them up, entered the tightly packed, sweaty environment and gets stuck. I wonder how we should read her reaction. Wendy Erskine says: “She’s resentful. This is a person who
has missed out on the teenage experience her daughter is having. So she can’t move, metaphorically.” It’s not surprising to learn that Erskine has a 20-year-old daughter. “Matilda is now studying photography at Glasgow School of Art.” This is the city where Wendy herself studied. “It’s civilised, possibly the city most like London in the UK. The old tenement buildings are gorgeous. I spent around eight years there, doing English at Glasgow University, then a PGCE.” Erskine says now that her English course was rather traditional. “It would probably be considered old-fashioned as we studied the canon, everything from Anglo-Saxon to twentieth century work.” Asked the journalistic staple about her favourite writers, Erskine comes back with: “Oh, 19th century Americans – Emily Dickinson, Walt Whitman, and the Romantic poets.” The writing bug didn’t hit Erskine until she’d moved to Newcastle on Tyne and begun her teaching career, which has led her to her current job at Strathearn School, east Belfast. Early attempts at fiction could have been marked F for failure. “I wrote a novel about a teenage girl and it was absolutely appalling!” She laughs and says that when her manuscript came back from the publisher, she wasn’t surprised. “I thought they were right, it was bloody
69
awful!” But Wendy Erskine still enjoyed the writing process and moved to a style that anticipated her success with short stories, as she explains: “I produced little fragments for my own amusement. When I was young, I remember I always loved to make up people and produce lists of Christian names for them.” Funnily enough, she says that when writing characters now, she sometimes has to rename them at the end of the story. “Because you realise they didn’t pick the right name, it didn’t suit them.” In one of her funniest stories, Gloria and Max, the names fit like a glove. The academic outsider, who had been in Ulster a couple of months, “just long enough to know its limitations”, gives a lift to a Christian film festival to a young, local care worker. He’s professionally interested, she is scouting for safe films for elderly residents. They chat, diverge, each seeming to despise the other. Yet after attending an accident and having to reassess the other person, a residual frisson remains. As Erskine says, being in close proximity to somebody in a car “is a bit like the confessional”. Erskine’s first published story, Janus, was published in 2016. Of course, Wendy has a double life, which she relishes, writing for a couple of hours each evening. “At home, they complain I’m never there.” But her timetable clearly works and the school
INTERVIEW
– which has been, she says “wonderful” and must be proud of their star English teacher – gave her one free afternoon a week a while back. “I thought I wanted to do something useful and signed up to an online writing course. Each week, two people would read work and the others would critique.” Nowadays, Wendy Erskine’s editor at Picador hasn’t got much to do. “He’s very good but no, I am not much edited.” Reading through Dance Move, one is unsurprised. Stories like Mathematics lead you to surprising, occasionally shocking places in the sort of supple prose that beckons without heavy signposting. Mathematics deals with a hotel cleaner who is friendly with her boss and acquires the debris of other people’s lives. It opens like this: “The drawer beside Roberta’s bed contained remnants of other people’s fun: a small mother of pearl box, inlaid with gold, a lipstick that was a stripe of fuchsia, a lucky charm in the shape of a dollar sign.” Staff could claim finders keepers after two months and then comes the twist. Two twists, actually. First, a woman leaves her little girl behind and Roberta finds herself in loco parentis, something she clearly loves. The relationship between the young woman and the girl is superbly done. Then comes the genuinely shocking ending, which I shan’t reveal. As with all her stories, Wendy Erskine starts by “thinking about things” for a couple of weeks. She says this is enjoyable, and then she starts the actual writing. When I interviewed the late Beryl
Bainbridge, she said she found inspiration, magpie like, in a lot of things, including newspaper cuttings about dramatic, even violent events. In this case, it wasn’t a news story but paintings, which fed into her tale. Erskine reveals it was the paintings, by artist Caroline Walker, of women in real, often domestic or overlooked work settings that inspired her. Does she feel that these stories denote the state of the Northern Irish nation? No is the short answer, even though society is seen as a changing creature throughout. In terms of the Province’s recent history, the Troubles, there is a literary debate going on about when art should move on. Erskine comments: “For some people in Northern Ireland, conflict or post-conflict, that’s just the way things operated? No one can escape their Troubles experience.” Short stories undoubtedly have ambitions beyond their length, as Wendy Erskine explains. “The short story is incredibly flexible, almost like a bit of poetry.
There can be so many rules and regulations, you could study them forever and never work it out. It’s a satisfying whole and George Eliot had a nice metaphor. She said the stories she liked were like a spider’s web with the strands doing very little yet the whole containing all this space.” Erskine is not a believer in the old inspiration theory. “Mostly I am not waiting for inspiration, that’s almost a luxury. If I stood about waiting for a muse, that won’t ever happen.” She goes on to say she lives with her ideas and is inspired by a range of things. “It could be anything, a song, a story in the newspaper.” Mathematics began with what is left behind in hotel rooms. I stay in them and it could be a phone charger.” This magnified to the discovery of a child and a horribly plausible ending. She writes a draft, then a second draft. “Peripheral characters can become central.” The work sharpens and the first person to read it is her editor, who unremarkably doesn’t change much. Erskine is moving to the top of the tree, with a very positive Sunday Times review (“likely to keep you pinned to your seat in uneasy fascination”) days after we meet. Away from the desk and laptop, Wendy Erskine enjoys, pandemic permitting, eating out. “The Golden Elephant is a favourite and I order green papaya salad and charcoal beef or beef salad. We often order the same thing as we like it.” There’s also a Mexican place, Number One, which is very good, according to Ms Erskine.
Mostly I am not waiting for inspiration, that’s almost a luxury. If I stood about waiting for a muse, that won’t ever happen. 70

BOOK EXTRACT
Gloria and Max Below is an extract from Gloria and Max, a short story featured in Wendy Erskine’s latest release, Dance Move. Max Haynes had been in Northern Ireland for just under two months: long enough to know its limitations. Those presented themselves within two days, such as the cultural quarter of Belfast that consisted of a single street. He was there as visiting professor of film. And now he was in his car, driving to a place in the middle of nowhere. There was to be a film festival in some godforsaken spot and he had been roped in to attending a planning meeting. Yeah, for sure, he could appreciate the importance of an outreach dimension to the work of the faculty. He had in fact already programmed a short Unknown Pleasures series for the university cinema based on Slavic mythology. And as far as he was concerned, it had been quite a success. Yet the prospect of this small local festival filled him with little enthusiasm. Indeed, it presented significant ideological and aesthetic issues because – as a festival of so-called Christian cinema – it was monocultural and reductive. But nonetheless Max had agreed to go. And he had also said that he would give a lift to another attendee, a woman called Gloria, who would be waiting outside the Spar in one of the unfortunate little places he had to pass through. It was, however, very pleasant going along in the car, through red and yellow trees. In London or the other cities where he’d lived, Max had rarely driven at all. But on arrival for the new, temporary job, they’d offered car leasing. He’d laughed at first and gone to the showroom reluctantly, but when he went for the test-drive in the sleek and stately machine, that was it. He joked about it to Janika when he sent her a photo of it. So not me! He said. But, still, he had gone for the impressive car. Max arrived at the designated place at the agreed time. It was not a particularly attractive spot. Although it felt rural, the huge chimney
of a nearby power station loomed through the trees. In this main street he wondered if people were waiting for some kind of drugs drop, such were the numbers loitering. Three teenage guys were taking turns to jump on the silver inflatable from the inside of a wine box. Behind them was a sign advertising hot food. A burrito wore a sombrero and had a moustache. That was fairly typical of the place. He would hesitate to brand everyone in the country rednecks because many weren’t. Max had met several people at the university that he would certainly keep in touch with after he left at the end of the year. And there was the guy and his partner who did film scores. But undoubtedly there were also a lot of rednecks. At the bus stop in front of the shop a crowd of girls waited. Two women stood talking together as a dog on a lead gyred round. One of the boys kicked the burrito sign. On the other side of the street there was a funeral director’s with an outsize drum clock above the window, its slow hand performing its sweep. Max cringed at its clumsiness. And then, turning back, he saw a heavyset, middle-aged woman in jeans, white trainers and a pale pink anorak. She had patchy short blonde hair and looked entirely unperturbed as she stood against the front of the shop. Max wondered how this woman might feel about being in a car, an enclosed space, with a man she didn’t know. It might make her feel less uneasy if he banged on a bit about Janika. That would establish that he wasn’t a threat, and that Janika was a person who, if not there in physical manifestation, was constantly there in thought. Max rolled down the window. Gloria! He said, not loud enough. Gloria! He shouted. It sounded ridiculous, like some kind of dreadful Van Morrison tribute act. Gloria! 71

Are there any haircare products you recommend? Philip Kingsley Elasticizer mask – great for adding body to thin hair.
Do you have a favourite designer or high street brand? I love to shop around and really mix and match brands. Some favourites would be Zara, ASOS, All Saints, Anine Bing and Max Mara. Do you have any style icons? Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn, Victoria Beckham and Olivia Culpo. Do you have a skincare regime? I suffer from adult acne, which can be frustraiting; so I’m now really religious about skincare. I use Obagi Medical skincare morning and night.

Looks like we made it! Yay! The clocks officially go forward at the end of this month announcing the start of spring 2022. Restrictions have relaxed and we no longer have to wear masks (unless of course we want or have to). There are many reasons to be cheerful and I hope some of this month’s musings help put a smile on your face. Enjoy.
La Dolce Vita There was a squeal of delight when the press release dropped on my desk announcing the opening of Italian Design House, Gucci, at Queens Arcade in the heart of Belfast. The high-end store which opened last month has dedicated itself to watches and jewellery with lusted-after collections including the GUCCI 25H and G-Timeless, alongside fine jewellery from Gucci Link to Love, Gucci Flora and classic silver jewellery from GG Marmont and Gucci Garden collections. That’s all my birthdays, wedding anniversaries, and Christmas presents sorted for the next while! For a taste of La Dolce Vita head to GUCCI Boutique, Queens Arcade Belfast.

Leave the Louboutins, forget your flatforms, the ‘it’ shoe currently worn by anyone who is anyone, isn’t a shoe at all! Right now, it’s all about the slipper. This most humble of footwear has left the fireside and is having a serious fashion ‘moment’. For reference note Kendall Jenner who has been seen wearing North Face Thermoball indoor-outdoor puffer slipper boots (more commonly known as sluffers). Net-a-Porter is leaning into the trend with Balenciaga’s creamy recycled faux-shearling logo-ed backless mules for a mere £550. Wear your slippers with pride folks, right now and until much warmer weather, they’re about as fashionforward as feet can get.

Back to black In the pre-Instagram era, fashion editors wore so much black they were nicknamed the ‘crows’, fast forward to spring 2022 and black is coming home to roost. A trend already big on the catwalk at Balenciaga, Celine and Chanel, the fashion crowd are flocking back to black. At Couture shows in Paris fashion week, head-to-toe inky outfits lined the streets. Online searches for black are on the rise and high-end boutiques have stocked their shelves with coal-coloured pieces.

5. Do you have a specific fitness regime? I’m not really into breaking a sweat in the gym, but I really love swimming, which I try to do at least three times a week. 6. Do you have any tips for staying positive? I am a great believer in the power of prayer. I love saying the rosary at least three times a day to thank God for the life I have been given. 7. What do you think is the best thing about living in Northern Ireland? As I come from a big family of 14 children, to have my sisters and brothers around makes living in this wee place great, along with my husband and two children. Also, the amazing scenery we have also makes this place a wonderful place to live in, whether it’s on the shores of Carlingford Lough where I live, or the north Antrim coast, or driving over the Glenshane Pass every week. Finally my customers, who have become my firends over the years.
Theresa Hughes Owner of Tresses Wig & Hairpiece Boutique Hairloss Clinic
8. What is your mantra or favourite quote that you live by? Your health is your wealth and enjoy every day as it could be your last. Also, there is no future in looking at the past. I would regard myself as someone with a positive outlook on life.
1. What do you love most about your job? The customers, especially those suffering from the effects of chemotherapy who come to me in a very fragile state. They are experiencing a living nightmare. On top of that they are also losing their hair. When I fit them with a new hairpiece, I am giving back their dignity, confidence and maybe the hope that they can fight this dreadful disease. Seeing customers leave with a smile on their face makes this the greatest job in the world.
9. Who has been your biggest influence? On top of my list would be Mother Teresa of Calcutta who was a symbol of hope to many – the aged, destitute, the unemployed, the diseased, the terminally ill, and those abandoned by their families. I try to follow her example in life. Also I am a big fan of American TV presenter, Oprah Winfrey. I had the honour of being in the audience at one of her shows in Chicago. Unfortunately she wasn’t giving away any free holidays to the audience that day. Business wise, it has to be a lady who had the courage of giving me my first proper part-time job in a hairdressing salon in Newry at the age of 15. Not only did she teach me the art of hairdressing, but also the art of running a business. By my 19th birthday I took the plunge and opened on my own with a small loan from the bank. Over 40 years later, I am still in business working six days a week, still loving every minute.
2. What has been your career highlight to date? It has to be when I received an MBE from Prince Charles at Buckingham Palace in 2008. It was for helping set up the cancer support services in the McMillan Centre at the City Hospital. My husband and two children might have university degrees, but they don’t have an MBE. 3. What are your favourite hobbies/activities outside of work? I love walking, whether it is around Kilbroney Park in Rostrevor, where I live, or along the beach at Greencastle. I regard myself as a person who believes in faith, and I am a member of the local Legion of Mary, which I attend every Monday night. 4. What is your daily routine? I am an early riser so my daily alarm is set for 6.30am. I like to go to Mass at 7.30am, followed by a swim at the Canal Court Hotel pool. After that everyday is different. Monday morning I set off to Drogheda where I hold a clinic at the Gary Kelly Cancer Support Centre. Tuesday I operate from my Newry boutique. Wednesday and Thursday I drive up to Altnagelvin hospital where I hold a clinic at the McMillan Support Centre. I would normally stay over in Belfast on a Wednesday night to break up the journey. Friday I am in Belfast at the boutique on the Lisburn Road and Saturday I am back in Newry. As I live in Rostrevor this involves a lot of driving. I usually have an audio book, which I listen to pass the time on the road.

REVIEWS Ulster Tatler’s Joanne Harkness reviews Timeless Truth Mask’s new rinseable face masks. I love a good face mask, they are a fail-safe way to replenish your skin on days when it needs a boost. They are so quick and easy to do, and don’t involve multiple steps of applying lotion after lotion. Not to mention the process of applying the mask and having it on for 15-20 minutes is relaxing in itself, it is the perfect way to unwind at the end of a busy day. My go-to face masks are Timeless Truth Masks, who are world leaders in premium sheet mask technology. However, now they are expanding their expertise with their new range of rinseable masks and I couldn’t wait to try them out! I got the multi-masking set, which contains six uniquely functioning rinse-off masks with the aim of providing a targeted and effective skincare approach to treat all your skin conditions at once. When choosing what face mask to put on, it is often difficult to decide what to go for; one that provides hydration, one that helps with blemishes, or one that
illuminates… the list goes on. With this set of six it was great being able to apply different masks to different areas of my face. I chose to target three areas; my T-Zone area which can get congested with blackheads, my under-eye area which I am paranoid is getting wrinkles (eek!) and finally the rest of my face which needed all-round hydration as the winter, outdoor hockey-playing hadn’t done my skin any favours. For the T-Zone area I used the Pore Treatment Glacial Mask, which can gently absorb the pollutants and impurities in pores, regulates sebum production and refines pores and skin tone. For the under eye area I used the Skin Relief Reviving Mask With Rose Clay, which smooths out wrinkles and relieves stress using Palmitoyl Hexapeptide-12 to

slow down the signs of ageing. For the rest of my face I used the Hydra Nourish Rescue Mask With White Clay, which instantly infuses moisture, provides nutrients with vitamin B5 and creates a protective seal to lock in moisture even after you rinse it off. The texture of the masks was silky smooth, it was a delight to apply and had a cooling, moisturing feel. This is usually my issue with other clay masks – they can become so dry and feel like you are putting concrete on your face! But this certainly was not the case with the Timeless Truth Masks – and they were so easy to rinse off, no scrubbing was necessary. My skin instantly felt rejuvenated after just one application and as it was so easy to do I have added it into my regular skincare routine to keep seeing the desired results. I am looking forward to mixing and matching all six of the masks – it is the gift that keeps on giving! For more information visit: www. quinnhairbeauty.com

Are headaches or migraines destroying your life? Apex Headache Clinic, Belfast, is Ireland’s first drug free headache and migraine clinic, and has been clearing headaches and migraines for over 20 years. An experienced team of specialist physiotherapists is led by clinic founder and Spinal & Headache Physiotherapy Specialist, Rebecca Nelson. Her unique approach of treating and clearing headaches/migraines, called The Nelson Headache Approach™ is offered in no other clinics and its high success rate explains why people travel from all over the UK and Ireland for this treatment. This month, Rebecca explains why getting to the source of the problem, rather than taking painkillers is always the best solution to curing headaches and migraines. specialist regime of manual physiotherapy treatment for headaches and migraines has been successfully used in patients of all ages, from children to elderly folk. neck, even when the person may experience no neck pain at all. Poor posture or hours spent slumped over desks and computers commonly cause persistent neck-triggered headaches or migraines, as can repeated lifting or a previous neck injury.
Headaches ruin lives At Apex Headache Clinic we see patients daily whose lives have been destroyed by headaches or migraines, leaving them desperate to find a cure for their pain. In the UK alone, a staggering 10 million people suffer from daily or frequent headaches. Many people blame tension or stress for their headaches and so they reach for painkillers which offer them no long-lasting relief. What many people are unaware of, is that there is often a physical cause for their headaches stemming from their upper
Headaches and migraines can stem from your neck While spending the early part of my career in New Zealand, over 25 years ago, I sought treatment for my own migraines, which were diagnosed as stemming from my neck. I had no idea that my neck was involved, and this treatment was life changing for me. I’ve had no headaches or migraines ever since. When I returned to Northern Ireland, I later launched Apex Headache Clinic with the sole aim of providing a cure to other migraine and headache sufferers like myself.
Get your life back on track and say good-bye to your headaches 38-year-old Gemma Hunter, from Belfast attended Apex Headache Clinic after suffering a severe migraine episode which left her unable to get out of bed for 4 weeks and led to her having to take 3 months off work. After completing her course of treatment Gemma said, “I didn’t realise I had a physical problem with my neck until I went for treatment at Apex Headache Clinic and during the initial consultation, I was told that my migraines and vertigo were stemming from my neck as opposed to stress like I had thought. I had been

having a burning sensation from my shoulder, up my neck and into my head. It was so worrying for me because I didn’t know why this pain came on, I knew I hadn’t hurt myself. My specialist physio was able to find the source of this pain and over the course of my treatment this pain became less and less. My treatment sessions were frequent at the beginning and then were spaced out to once a month for maintenance. I have been able to go back to work fully and function again on a daily basis. I have had such great improvement and I haven’t had a migraine in 3 months now. It’s amazing!” Treat pain at its source If you suffer from persistent headaches or migraines it is important to get to the source of the problem. Examen is now offering semen analysis testing to men in Belfast Examen, leader in male fertility research and diagnostics, is delighted to announce that semen analysis is now available at its Belfast facility. This is the latest addition to its expanding male fertility diagnostics range of tests, that includes the marketleading Exact tests for sperm DNA quality. This comes in response to unprecedented demand for fertility services as couples continue to face delays in appointments owing to the pandemic backlog. Men are waiting for up to nine months for their first test. Up to 4,000 couples in Northern Ireland may be affected by this wait. Without male testing, couples can’t proceed to fertility treatment. For older couples, each month they wait can reduce their chances of ever having a family. Northern Ireland is already disadvantaged in having only one free fertility treatment for each couple compared to three free cycles in Scotland and parts of England. “We’re pleased to offer semen analysis to men in close proximity to our Belfast facility; especially in the current environment, where waiting times for fertility investigations and treatments have been heavily impacted by the pandemic,” stated Professor
Professor Sheena Lewis BSc PhD PCHET CBiol FRSB CEO Examen
Sheena Lewis, Founder and CEO of Examen and internationally acclaimed researcher. “The combination of both a semen analysis and a sperm DNA analysis provides a much more accurate picture of male fertility potential and provides couples with personalised results for their fertility journey. We hope this advance in ‘Couple Care’ will lead to more successful treatment. The new service is available from Examen’s facilities in Belfast. Sample kits ordered online can be used discreetly at home and dropped at the lab on a pre-booked appointment within one hour of production. Results along with simple explanations will be sent securely by email to clients. The Examen semen analysis test costs £180 and can be purchased in a package with the Exact test for £425. Customers can use the discount code MARCH15 to receive 15% off until March 31st. Results for both tests will be returned within 7-10 days. ARTS DIARY
“In his latest exhibition, Frans unveiled his most personal collection yet” EDITED BY KELLIE BURCH KELLIE@ULSTERTATLER.COM
A Picture of Me exhibition launch I have now had the pleasure of seeing a couple of Ballyclare-based artist, Frans Gertenbach’s, exhibitions over the last couple of years. From The People of Belfast, which exposed the cold and uncomfortable truths of homelessness in the city, to The Portrait of People, which brought the message of the transgender person into the spotlight, Frans commits to tackling important subjects that others may shy away from. In his latest exhibition, which ran at ArtCetera Studio, Belfast in early February, Frans unveiled his most personal collection yet: A Picture of Me. The South African-born artist’s latest body of work was composed of 14 acrylic paintings which explore the people, past and present, who have inspired him. Speaking at the opening night he said: “This exhibition is very much about me. I have given every portrait a title, and each one contains a personal message.” From ’Strong’ which is about Frans and his mother - who he credits as making him strong - to ‘Redeemed’ which explores Frans’ sexual identity and Christian faith, each portrait is a powerful insight into the separate influences who have made Frans the man - and artist - he is today. Gertenbach is extremely accomplished at capturing the essence of his subjects by translating the nuances of their faces onto canvas. However in A Picture of Me, many of his portraits remain faceless. I found this extremely effective as, although each piece successfully told Frans’ story, the ambiguity also allowed the viewer the freedom to transfer their own interpretation to each piece. The opening of ‘A Picture of Me took place on an evening filled with torrential rain, however this powerful, creative and visual collection was definitely work getting your feet wet for. Fans of Frans’ work came out in their droves including cousins Jacques and Kobus Saayman and artist Meadhbh McIlgorm. The opening of A Picture of Me took place on 3 February 2022.

Opening of BODY Every year, one of my absolute favourite festivals is the NI Science Festival. And after a year hiatus because of the pandemic, it was back bigger and better than ever. The unique programme of events was bursting with creativity, guaranteeing to make all aspects of science accessible and engaging to a diverse audience of all ages. One of the Festival’s centrepieces this year was BODY, an immersive installation developed by inventor Richard Babington and outdoor arts experts, Walk the Plank. The installation, which was erected in Belfast’s Botanic Gardens, explored the building blocks of human biology through the innovative use of light, sound and fire. I had the opportunity to attend the opening night and was amazed from the outset. As you walked through a dark tunnel, the word ‘Body’ was cleverly

projected amidst an atmospheric cloud of smoke, which perfectly set the scene for what followed. Inspired by anatomical science, BODY is an immersive journey through six different zones, that represent different systems within the human body. The first section was all about the brain and neural activity. Cutting edge technology was seamlessly employed to create a circuit like structure that captured the magic of the brain’s ability to pass messages along using synapses. Other areas that were represented were DNA, sight, smell, breathing, memory and my personal favourite, the heart and blood system. The focal part of this section was a beating heart sculpture which erupted with flames of fire to match its pulsing rhythms. It was absolutely mesmerising

(and highly Instagramable!). BODY, which features soundscapes throughout from BAFTA award winning composer Sandy Nuttgens and Helen Hampton, proved to be an imaginative and fun way to learn all about the inner workings of the human body. After a difficult couple of years which have highlighted the sheer importance of science, it was heart-warming to see how much curious onlookers of all ages engaged in this educational display. Joining NI Science Festival production manager Wendy Blemings and Walk the Plank Creative Producer Nathan Jackson were National Museums NI’s Jessica Hoyle and Ciarán Lavelle, to name a few. The opening night of BODY, part of the NI Science Festival, took place on 17 February 2022.

All Together, All Alone This year’s NI Science Festival programme offered such a rich offering that it was impossible to limit myself to covering just one event. I followed up the superb BODY installation with a trip to W5 and the unveiling of All Together, All Alone. Created especially with Dolby Atmos and situated within the AMAZE space in W5, this completely immersive multimedia installation and audio piece was created by Belfast-based composer Rory Friers. The first event of its kind to be exhibited in this space, All Together, All Alone was specially commissioned by the NI Science Festival and draws on Rory’s work as a film composer as well as his recent, highly acclaimed AV project, Jettison, with his band And So I Watch You From Afar. On the night, guests were welcomed by NI Science Festival Director Chris McCreery who then introduce Rory Friers to speak a little more about this unique work. Rory said: “This experiment is a

reflection on the weird two years that we have all experienced and is a combination of different elements - the main element being the composition of music I wrote which was inspired by the monotony and the weariness that built up during the last couple of years. It’s mirrored by imagery which was recorded on the very first day of lockdown on a handheld camera. The final component was recordings taken over the past two years of humans doing what we all did - trying to get on with things.” ARCO String Quartet, who joined Friers’ to record the haunting original score for the piece, made the opening night of All Together, All Alone all the more spectacular with a live performance. To view the piece, the space was initially plunged into complete darkness. As snippets of recorded conversations could be heard, there were flashes of light as Frier’s footage of the deserted streets of
Belfast skittered across the multi-screened space. The original score and the live music continued to build in intensity as the footage completely enveloped the entirety of the room. The result was a completely moving and poignant experience which completely consumed your senses. Although highlighting the stark period of time that we have all experienced collectively, this important and emotional piece showcased just how alone we were during it. To round the evening off, guests including music writer and broadcaster Stuart Bailie; artist Benen Dillon; and NI Science Festival board members Dr Liz Conlon and Judith Harvey, were invited to an exclusive drinks reception by event sponsors Boundary Beer and a DJ set from the talented Kwame Daniels. All Together; All Alone opened on 18th February.

BOOK EXTRACT
MY NAME IS REBECCA This month’s extract is from My Name is Rebecca, a story about loss, grief and guilt by Co. Antrim author, Sam Burnside, published by Hobart Books Ltd. I cannot forget. That memory is always present: it is like a red-hot coal, resting among the blackened cinders of the past. It is a day in September. The year is 1983. I am walking along a Belfast street with my sister, Ruth. It was she who had wanted to come to the city centre, to visit a shop she had heard about; she wanted to look for a new dress and I was the one who was in a hurry, as usual. She fell behind – wilfully, I considered, for I was in a temper – so I refused to delay for her, dashing on ahead. Nevertheless, at some point I faltered in my intention; I stopped and turned around. I still do not know why I did this, just at that moment. Instinct… foresight, perhaps… something outside time, certainly. It is always with me, that image, frozen, unchanging and unchangeable: as I turned, the view before me was as one in a painted scene, partially glimpsed hanging in a stairway or in an old photograph exposed, and carelessly glanced over in passing, in a halfopen drawer – a moment caught then lost, leaving behind only a fleeting remembrance. As I turned, I became aware of a handful of people immediately behind me, positioned between my sister and me. Then there was a movement, like the wind’s sudden brush across a field of corn, followed by a sudden hiatus in the crowd, leaving a gap with Ruth alone at its empty heart. She has stopped to peer, in that short-sighted way she has – had – at something, some displayed goods on sale in a shop window, and I remember catching a glimpse of something white and thinking it was probably a wedding dress... but, of course, I was in such a panic… She looked so vulnerable, alone in that empty space, and I could only think to say impatiently, ‘Can’t you hurry, please!’ Then I become aware of people in the far background, behind her, they were mingling about, some had stopped, frozen, a few were caught in the process of turning away. Ruth alone remained peering
in at the shop window, oblivious to all that was around her. No, that’s not it. That’s not right. Time, that is what I mean. Time seemed to become somehow slower, to somehow… shiver. People moved, slowly, without hurry, or were still; but quietly, something moved them, caused them to shift their ground, in odd, oldfashioned, sluggish ways. As I turned and took in the scene, time, or something like time, did indeed appear to stop. I became aware of an all-pervading, profound and powerful silence – it was like a great weight, pressing down. Then, the day emitted a sigh. A sigh: a comma breaking apart a sentence, a slow-falling pause. Then a great sound imploded upon the scene and an unknown force shifted me physically, lifted me off my feet and hurled me backwards. Noise wrapped around me. I saw Ruth rise up in the air. She was taken from me. She hung there; it seemed forever and ever and ever, like a puppet presented against a backdrop of make-believe smoke and red pantomime fire. Then her body descended… or rather, that’s too firm, too purposeful… no, it floated… towards the earth, from which it came. And in its descent, her clothes were taken, plucked from her body. I think ‘plucked’ because I remembered, when thinking about it later in the night, when I fought against and then for sleep, of how, when I was a child, I saw once or twice a chicken’s feathers being plucked and cast aside: a hand rising and falling, casting billows of white and brown feathers. And this was the same, this careless separation of body and the body’s covering. The fabric remained, or at least the threads remained, hanging there, in mid-air, stationary for a time, before floating earthwards, light as eiderdown, easy as dandelion fluff, soft and silent as feathers… As they fell they scattered, pieces of unnatural plumage, light and yielding as snowflakes, they descended, descended so
102
condescendingly, so waywardly towards the earth. And through it all, the bright shards of shattered, burst glass flew upon the day, upon my sight, spreading, hard and shining in the sunlight. As they fell, they glittered and sparkled, like diamonds. Through the curtain of dust they cast their sparkle. And then it was over: this economy of destruction and all was changed and the world inside my head was overflowing with far-off voices and sirens and blue lights and white tiles and more and many and brighter, blinding lights… And that is how my sister Ruth’s life here, on earth, ended.

Recognised Worldwide Irish artist Terry Bradley is making a name for himself in Northern Irish culture, as he breaks through conventional stereotypes and brings his dramatic designs to the eyes of art lovers across the world. Although he was already well known throughout Ireland, his work has now reached a new global audience in the form of his dramatic dockland piece which features in the recently launched ‘Belfast’ movie from Kenneth Branagh starring Jamie Dornan. Terry Terry’s art bridges the gap between past and Bradley present in the opening credits and draws the viewer into the world of 1960’s Belfast. Bradley’s own childhood growing up around the same streets that the movie is set in makes the piece even more significant. Alongside Bradley’s Belfast docker paintings his work takes inspiration from the glamorously feminine models of the Dublin fashion scene. His solo art exhibitions from the early 2000’s developed into a series of pop-up galleries across Ireland, New York and Marbella and has now evolved into permanent galleries of his own in both Victoria Square in Belfast and Bangor, Co. Down. Terry’s creative mind reaches even further than his artwork and fuels his desire to create new branches of his business. Over the years Terry has collaborated with brands such as Nokia and Harley Davidson on projects set to redefine the definition of what an artist could be. Bradley’s unconventional rise in the art world sets him apart, allowing him to use his artwork to reach out to people and connect on a very personal level. He is known the world over for his stylised canvases and original artwork, with his Dead Rabbit commissioned painting hanging in ‘The World’s Best Bar’ the Dead Rabbit in New York. Alongside his art Terry has long been open about his own mental health struggles and how he uses artwork as a form of therapy. This has been what has attracted so many to his work and created a community within his followers where customers feel comfortable

to share their stories of past and present struggles. He recently released a limited number of wristbands with the words ‘Never Give Up’, a message that Terry lives by, which he gave away in his galleries as a reminder to those struggling with their own issues. Terry’s artwork takes pride of place in murals in Belfast and Bangor with a large wall at Hickson’s Point, commissioned by the Titanic Museum and also features in the public areas of the Titanic Hotel, Belfast. His galleries have become destination attractions of their own with many clients making special trips to come and see his work in person after following his career online for many years. Terry hopes to continue on his journey representing the people of Northern Ireland both through his art and through being open about the mental health issues that he stands behind.

hen I think of camping, I get flashbacks to my Duke of Edinburgh days, treking through the rain in what felt like the middle of nowhere, trying to pitch a tent in muddy fields and lugging around a rucksack bigger than my body! It is safe to say camping has never been high on my agenda ever since… glamping on the other hand, now that is a different story. With the surge of staycations, I have been seeing different types of glamping pods popping up all over the country and they have soared in popularity. My fiancé and I like travelled abroad a couple of times a year pre-Covid, but with travelling becoming a bit more of a hassle we have embraced our staycations throughout Northern Ireland instead. The one thing we still had to tick off our list was staying in glamping pods, but a trip to Benone Getaways would soon set that right. The winter months can be long and arduous, so a weekend trip can be exactly what is needed to break up the monotony. We made our way up to the north coast, eager to embrace the typical winter weather (wet, windy and cold!) and make the most of our time together. Our first stop was to Portrush for a fabulous lunch at Basalt, which included tremendous tapas dishes and a minty mojito. This set us up nicely for the day and we set off on our journey to Benone, which was only a 20-minute drive from Portrush. I was glad to be in the passenger seat for this journey as it allowed me to take in the stunning scenery, which included the majestic Mussenden Temple. We arrived at our destination for the 4pm check-in, where we met the lovely Gina at reception. We were delighted to hear that we were staying in the exclusive
glamping pod called the ‘Binevenagh Hideaway’. We made our way through the beautiful courtyard that was dotted with the luxury glamping pods, and proceeded on to our exclusive, fenced-off patch where the Binevenagh Hideaway stood. The first thing that caught my eye was the private hot tub in the corner of the garden area – I couldn’t wait to get into it! Sliding open the doors, I was astounded by how much the glamping pod held within it. There was a sofa, flat screen TV, kitchen area with a fridge and microwave, ensuite with a shower, and a double bed tucked away in the corner – everything you needed and more within one cosy area. We spotted the robes hanging on the door, so decided it was time to try out the hot tub. The fact that it was a cold and stormy evening didn’t deter us, if anything it made it more enjoyable. What could be better than dipping into the enticing heated water of the hot tub while looking up at the starry night sky and sipping on a glass of prosecco? It was total bliss. We
106
reluctantly pulled ourselves out of the hot tub to brave the quick, cold dash back to the warm, snug pod. Within our welcome pack was a smores kit, cocktails and face masks, so we had plenty of things to keep us occupied. We opted to sit back, relax and pour ourselves a Piña colada, while applying a moisturising face mask – not my fiancé’s typical way to spend an evening, but I can confirm he enjoyed it just as much as I did! One of my favourite things about the pod was the bed – it was so comfortable and we both had the perfect night’s sleep. It was such a treat getting to wake up to the spectacular views of Binevenagh Mountain on what was a tranquil morning. There was a knock on the door, which turned out to be the delivery of our breakfast hamper. The attention to detail in this breakfast hamper was second to none. It was filled with fresh croissants, scones, cereal, fruit, porridge, orange juice and yoghurts – my ideal breakfast, setting me up for the day ahead. Check out was at the very reasonable time of 10.30am, so we packed up our things ready to hit the road after our relaxing night. We were both in agreement that we would definitely come back again. We had spotted there was a hut called ‘The Chill & Grill’ which would be perfect for having a BBQ and drinks with friends in the summer, not to mention the beautiful beaches and scenery that are on the doorstep to explore. Glamping is certainly lives up to the hype! Benone Getaways 5A Benone Avenue, Benone, BT49 0LQ T: 07999322446 www.benonegetaways.co.uk

NEW TRAIL LAUNCHED AT ULSTER FOLK MUSEUM National Museums NI has introduced a new project, Languages of Ulster, which will offer people the opportunity to explore the rich and diverse language traditions associated with Irish-English, Irish and Ulster Scots. The project aims to communicate that language, in all its diversity, belongs to everyone and that people from all backgrounds and traditions have a stake in
its future. By sharing the stories of the people and places around us, National Museums NI will challenge the assumptions that can be made about local languages and dialects and those who use them. A new educational trail entitled Cúl Trá-il deriving its name from the Irish place name for Cultra (Baile Chúl Trá) - is a self-guided tour exploring the story of the Irish language through the places and people of the Ulster
ROMANTIC
Folk Museum. It is the first output of the Languages of Ulster project with research work also already underway to introduce an Ulster Scots trail to celebrate additional local languages and culture. Cúl Trá-il participants will enjoy the trail through an illustrated booklet or smartphone app, both of which will be available in English and Irish. The trail leans on the living museum’s heritage setting to demonstrate authentic links between language, buildings, people and places. Visitors will learn that the 1900s residents of Ballycultra townland, the site of the museum, included Irish speakers from various counties, classes and denominations such as an architect from Belfast and his wife from Louth, a mason from Donegal, a stationmaster’s daughter from Antrim and a sculptor of Dutch parentage. Also revealed is how Cluan Place in East Belfast, ‘Cluan’ meaning meadow, was named after the home of a British army surgeon. Jewellery by you gift I wanted for my friends and family, which reflected the beauty of where we live, I decided to make them myself. What products do you offer? Our work reflects iconic Northern Irish buildings/ architecture and landscapes representing each of the six counties ie Dark Hedges, Giants Causeway, so you’ll always have a wee piece of home with you, wherever you are in the world. Our commission pieces allow us to create something special with you and we can even incorporate ashes or hair into bespoke pieces. We also offer a range of corporate jewellery suitable for large conferences or employee rewards.
Tell us about your jewellery making workshops. We are in the business of “creating memories”. Our “Jewellery by You” workshops allow you to create your own precious memories with loved ones whilst creating a piece of jewellery that will always remind you of that special day together. It’s a win win! We give beginners the opportunity to learn the processes of piercing (cutting), filing, shaping, soldering, texturing and polishing metal, which in itself is very satisfying with our experienced goldsmith Ruth always on hand to guide and help where required. Participants can then relax overlooking Belfast Lough, chat through their experiences or simply absorb the calming energy from the surrounding hills. The experience can be enhanced with some local produce including local refreshments, cheeses, chutneys and crackers, rounding off a thoroughly enjoyable and memorable experience. Here are some reviews to whet your appetite: “Had a fantastic time making bangle with my friends. Ruth is an amazing host and I would highly recommend the workshops” - Janet “Gifted a workshop experience and weren’t too sure what to expect, but Ruth made the morning an absolute pleasure. Ruth was super lovely in guiding us through the whole process whilst having a good chat and laugh at the same time! 100% recommend taking this workshop – it was great to do something a little different and come away with a lovely momento from the experience.” - Emma. What makes NI Silver unique? NI Silver jewellery making workshops are for beginners, so you don’t need any artistic ability whatsoever before you are whisked back to your childhood to let your creative juices flow again. Lockdown has affected us all mentally, so taking a morning to spend some quality time with friends, family or loved ones, creating something beautiful and wearable, is good for the soul and the mind. Ruth is very welcoming and will embrace your creative spirit and abilities to help you make your masterpiece. The workshop is nestled in the Holywood Hills with stunning views overlooking Belfast Lough, where you can relax and embrace the majesty of nature. NI Silver’s closeness to Belfast means easy access for anyone travelling to the gorgeous Ards Peninsula. What inspired you to set up NI Silver? Unable to find the type of quality jewellery 116

Products, gift vouchers and jewellery making workshop certificates are available to order online at https://nisilver.com Corporate gift requests should be emailed to ruth@nisilver.com. After living overseas for years and constantly telling others about our fabulous country, we teamed up with Tourism NI to let everyone know about our jewellery making experience. The makers fraternity in NI have always been here, but it’s only recently that people want to experience what we do and understand how things are handmade. Isn’t it much better to “experience” rather than just see? Come and join us and embrace your giant (creative) spirit. Images courtesy of Ards and North Down Borough Council.

Ask, Listen, Talk Multi Award Winning company dedicated to producing the finest free range eggs in the industry Inspire and Change Your Mind, Northern Ireland’s regional antistigma campaign, recently took part in a Northern Ireland-wide study of how the pandemic has affected the public’s wellbeing. Stigma is a major reason behind people choosing not to talk about mental health but, encouragingly, our research shows that over 80% of respondents found discussing the subject to have been a positive experience, more than anywhere else in the UK. Challenges remain, however, and we still have work to do. One third of the individuals polled were not comfortable discussing their mental health and 30% were unwilling to talk about it because they did not consider their struggles to be unusual. Everyone has the power to break stigma. Here are some simple steps we can all take to help those around us:
• Multi award winning, including Great Taste, Irish Quality Food Awards and Blas na hÉireann Gold awards
ASK Make a real difference and ASK for support for yourself or someone you care about.
• Family run business
LISTEN Start the conversation, even if it seems awkward. LISTEN carefully and take your time to absorb what you hear.
• Farm to fork • All hens are free range • High welfare standards
TALK It’s ok to TALK about emotions and feelings. Focus on whatever’s happening in life and how you feel.
• British Lion accredited
Inspire and Change Your Mind are here to assist those aiming to develop their knowledge in this area. We offer free mental health training to community groups and workplaces. If you are interested in learning more, contact hello@ inspirewellbeing.org or visit changeyourmindni.org.

Desirable additions to your kitchen. Mode German Kitchens took a look at some of the most desirable additions to any new kitchen. Channel Lighting As handleless kitchens make up the vast majority of our designs, the small upgrade of channel lighting is also often included. Channel lighting is the strip of LED lights embedded into the handle less channel of the cabinet or drawer. This adds beautiful accent lighting and is extremely effective in making the kitchen look both smart and inviting.
Quooker Boiling Water Tap The Quooker tap is fast becoming standard in most kitchens. There are four different designs to suit your kitchen in five colour options. The ease of cold, hot and boiling water on tap, as well as the option to add chilled and sparkling water, plus not needing a kettle on the worktop all go hand-in-hand with a German kitchen built for functionality and designed to be streamlined. It has various safety features as well as economic and environmental benefits.
Wine Cabinets Wine cabinets are popular as a feature in many kitchens because they are designed for both long-term storage of drinks and creating the perfect serving temperature. This, in turn, saves space in other areas of the kitchen such as cabinets or the fridge. Wine cabinets come in a range of sizes, built-in or freestanding and with different temperature zones.
Island Hob An island is a desirable feature in many kitchens and, when space allows, it can be very well-used to accommodate cooking or cleaning spaces. Having the hob on the island is becoming very popular, specifically when paired with a downdraft extractor. An alternative option is to have a four-zone induction hob with a built in extractor which is therefore only one appliance.
All of the above are available to see in the Mode German Kitchens showroom at 162 Lisburn Road, Belfast. The team at Mode German Kitchens works from concept to completion for your new kitchen. Their process is to listen, plan, design and install your kitchen. They work with your ideas and budget to create a kitchen that suits you and your family. They also have an excellent team of tradesmen who have a wealth of knowledge in their fields based on years of experience so Mode German Kitchens can be a one- stop-shop for your whole project! Hidden Gem on the Boucher Road
We all love to do our bit for the planet, whether you are a true warrior for the environment or just like to make conscious decisions when you can. When it comes to the home or office, sustainability always brings up thoughts of solar panels, energy-saving appliances and natural lighting. In a conversation directed around functionality, what about home décor? You do not have to sacrifice beauty for sustainability and a Persian rug is proof of this. The trend for decorating with sustainable fibers such as wool, jute, sisal and cotton is widely championed by interior designers and stylists. However, if you are looking to enhance your space in the most stunning way possible and maintain sustainable practices, a traditional, handknotted Persian rug is a wise investment. Layered over a natural jute or sisal rug, these beautiful and vibrant pieces add that extra stylish touch. The Persian Room at Kukoon Rugs Belfast boasts one of the largest hand knotted rug collections in Ireland. Whether you are a first time buyer or a collector of hand knotted rugs, the Kukoon team are on hand to offer expert advice and explain the history behind these truly unique pieces. Their knowledgeable staff also offers a complimentary measure and design service where they can visit your home with a selection of pieces for you to see in situ. Quick, Easy and Sustainable With unparalleled functionality, intuitive and seamless water mode transitions and in-built safety mechanisms which prevent turning on the boiling water by accident, Quooker delivers the tap that does it all. Thanks to its CUBE accessory, all Quooker taps can now dispense chilled and sparkling water at the touch of a button. Saving time and space, with CUBE the immediacy of super chilled and filtered water can be enjoyed without having to wait or waste water. Furthermore, one canister of C02 yields 60 litres of carbonated water which significantly reduces the need for single-use plastic bottles. The average UK household uses a staggering 360 plastic bottles per year, resulting in huge volumes of waste nationwide. With sustainability increasingly at the forefront of consumer purchase decisions, it has never been more important to find creative solutions around the problem of waste. Dispensing precisely the amount needed at any given moment, and with canisters that can be returned and re-filled after use, CUBE ensures responsible and more sustainable consumption. All Quooker taps continue to use very little electricity and give staggering energy saving results; thanks to its sophisticated state-of-the-art tank technology, it takes very little energy (just 10 watts) to keep the water in the tank at 110°C. Water only starts to boil when the tap is turned on and the temperature of the outflowing water drops to 100°C. While the water is coming out of the tap, fresh water immediately flows into the tank to replace the exact amount extracted ready for the next use. For more information, visit www.quooker.co.uk 136

looking for the safest access to their loft available.” John says that with space at such a premium, it makes sense to make the most of your loft. “Installing a loft ladder is quick and affordable. It’s less expensive than a garden shed and it means you don’t have to store everything out of the house.” Access4Lofts provides a free survey and quote service so you can find out what is achievable with your loft area. For the full works, customers can get a retractable 3-section ladder, a new hatch, a floating floor

Exclusive first look at Fisher & Paykel’s Combination Steam Oven, launching in April 2022 Steam has been a staple cooking technique in fine restaurants across the world for generations – pioneered by chefs and pâtissiers who pushed the boundaries to serve the most tender proteins or bake the perfect loaf. The reason is simple: cooking with steam is fast, accurate and gentle enough to respect even the most delicate ingredients. Experience the control, repeatability and certainty of steam in your home kitchen with steam ovens that are made to be the perfect complement to other Fisher & Paykel appliances. Fisher & Paykel’s steam oven, which will be launched in April 2022, is a truly multiple function oven where both steam-only and convection-only cooking mediums can stand on their own merits. You have the freedom to choose – whether it’s dry heat or moist heat, or a combination of the two – each delivering different cooking results. This combination steam oven has been designed with 23 oven functions including Steam, Sous Vide, Air Fry and Vent Bake. With six steam-only cooking functions, this oven lets you enjoy the benefits of flavourful and healthy restaurant-quality meals at home. Guided touchscreen cooking makes it simple to cook by food, function or recipe. Using the intuitive touchscreen interface, you can cook with a favourite method, a hero ingredient, or a go-to cooking function or recipe. Your oven will guide you through steps, or change temperature and heat type automatically, depending on your selection. Jo Jackson, Market Product Manager at Fisher & Paykel UK comments: “Following a huge demand for healthy cooking methods,
the steam oven will become a staple appliance in the future kitchen. With the introduction of combination steam ovens, more people are incorporating steam into their home kitchens, looking to bring the same control, repeatability and precision to their own cooking repertoire. While food can be steamed on a stovetop, the number of variables makes consistency of temperature almost impossible. There is no comparison in terms of consistency, retention of nutrients, and end results between stovetop steaming and an enclosed steam oven.” Fisher & Paykel’s Combi Steam oven does everything a convection oven can do, everything a steam oven can do, and almost everything a microwave can do. Unique AeroTech™ technology circulates heat evenly for a consistent temperature throughout the cavity, while ActiveVent technology ensures optimised moisture levels when using convection functions. A food probe precisely monitors cooking in real time, giving you
complete control. Every detail has been carefully crafted from the finest materials to support a considered kitchen design. Available in a subtle black finish or contemporary stainless steel, Fisher & Paykel’s combi steam oven is an elegant addition to the kitchen space, whether on its own or part of a matching appliance set. Fisher & Paykel’s new combination steam oven is available in four different styles: • Minimal touchscreen with dial • Minimal touchscreen • Contemporary touchscreen with dial • Contemporary touchscreen For more information please contact - 08000 886 605

Foster Carers urgently needed in Northern Ireland Action for Children have made an urgent call for potential foster carers to come forward in Northern Ireland. Avery Bowser, fostering services manager, explained: “The need is very great in Northern Ireland at the moment but the numbers coming forward have been too small. “We know that there are lots of people who have the space in their home to foster but they are often put off by myths about fostering. They think it’s only for certain types of people. “We need people from different backgrounds and communities to become foster carers because our children are all so different. “At Action for Children we provide foster families that have the warmth and stability that enable children to cope with the changes that life brings them. “We do that by recruiting ordinary people, from all walks of life, who do something extraordinary – become a foster carer.” Avery is asking readers to think about fostering or encourage someone else who could foster. “All kinds of people can foster. You have to be over 21, have a spare room, the ability to work with children and have the time in your life to give. “So please give our friendly fostering team a call. The need across Northern Ireland is very urgent and I am appealing for your help.” If you are interested in becoming a foster carer or would like to find out more, please contact Action for Children’s fostering team on 028 90460500 or email fostercareni@ actionforchildren.org.uk

Helen Shivers, With Her Northern Ireland Business Person Of The Year 2021 Trophy
Helen Shivers of Toome Industrial Development All-Ireland Business Foundation’s Northern Ireland Business Person of the Year The Managing Director of Toome Industrial Development has been recognised with a major accolade from the All-Ireland Business Foundation.
T
he Accreditation is an outstanding achievement for Helen Shivers as it recognises her hard work and dedication in providing a best in class service to her customers, as well as her contribution to Northern Irish business. This is an independently verified standard mark for indigenous businesses, based on rigorous selection criteria. The Accreditation is overseen by the prestigious All-Ireland Business Foundation, whose adjudication panel is chaired by Dr Briga Hynes of the Kemmy Business School at the University of Limerick and Kieran Ring, CEO of the Global Institute of Logistics. The Original Toome Industrial Estate Helen Shivers was born on a dairy and pig farm in County Fermanagh. As one of 10 siblings It was all hands on deck. They grew their own vegetables and their hens laid the eggs and provided meat for the Sunday dinner. Helen’s mother - who was a very industrious woman and an expert knitter - was also very good at securing her children part time jobs for after school. Helen started to work at 14 in a retail shop and thrived on the interaction with people. After leaving Fermanagh at 21 she married her husband Charlie who was a plumber and moved to County Derry. Helen began helping Charlie with his business - looking after his administration, his purchasing and invoices. The couple ran their business from the hayshed on the farm but soon began looking for a new site as the planners circled and the business grew. While on the way to a wedding in London she spotted a large derelict site made up of several old buildings for sale. It had planning permission to operate
an industrial business and so the couple swooped in and bought the site for £140’000.00 at auction. The sale was the beginning of Helen’s successful foray into the commercial property industry. Alongside her husband and her four children Helen has grown the business park from a large derelict shell into a thriving centre which is home to more than thirty two businesses and 300 people. Shivers Business Park Offers commercial property units of all shapes and sizes to suit retail outlets, office spaces and light industry. Units range in size from 200 sq ft up to 10,000 sq ft and can be modified to suit every specific requirement. The park boasts a prime location in the centre of Mid Ulster on a motorway that connects Belfast with Derry - Northern Ireland’s largest cities. With the demand for units at an all time high, Helen has bought an additional four acres adjoining her original four acre site. With properties also in Cookstown, Ballymena, Larne, Maghera and Kesh, Helen and her brilliant team are kept very busy. Toome Industrial Estate Today Responding to today’s announcement, Helen Shivers said: “I am most humbled and honoured to receive this beautiful award from the All Ireland Business Foundation, Northern Ireland Business Person of the Year 2021.” Kieran Ring, Deputy Chair on the Adjudication Board said in support of the announcement: “This Certificate Verifies That Helen Shivers Of Toome Industrial Development Has Been Named AIBF Northern Ireland Business Person Of The Year 2021. The Accreditation Is In Recognition Of Helen’s Outstanding Contribution To Industry & Commerce In Northern Ireland. Furthermore We Wish To Recognise Helen’s Track Record In The Founding And Nurturing Of Toome Industrial Development. Helen Shivers Is Hereby Included In The AIBF Register Of Irish Business Excellence.” Dr Hynes said the Accreditation, which 144

We also anonymously approach the company as a customer and report back on the experience. The business goes through at least two interviews and is scored on every part of the process against set metrics”, she says. THINKING OF STARTING YOUR OWN BUSINESS?
INITIAL CONSIDERATIONS In order to make your business a success there are a number of key factors which should be considered: • Commitment - starting a business is demanding. Determination and enthusiasm are essential. • Skills - you need managerial, financial, technical and marketing skills. If you do not have these skills personally, they can be found in a partner, employee or acquired with training. • Your product or service should have a proven or tested market, but must not conflict with the patent or legal rights of an existing business.
BUSINESS STRUCTURE There are three common types of business structure: • Sole trader: This is the simplest form of business since it can be established without legal formality. However, the sole trader is personally responsible for the liabilities of the business.
OTHER CONSIDERATIONS • Tax on profits • National insurance Contributions (NIC) • Value added tax (VAT) • Tax implications of employing staff • Raising finance • Insurance • Pensions
• Partnership: A partnership is similar in nature to a sole trader. Again the partners are personally responsible for the liabilities of the business. A further possibility is to use what is known as a Limited Liability Partnership (LLP), this can protect the partners from being personally responsible for liabilities of the partnership but there are legal regulations to comply with.
HOW WE CAN HELP Whilst some generalisation can be made about starting up a business. it is always necessary to tailor the strategy to fit your situation. Any plan must take account of your circumstances and aspirations. Whilst business success can never be guaranteed, professional advice can help to avoid some of the problems which befall new businesses.
• Company: The business affairs of the company are separate from the personal affairs of the owners, but again there are legal regulations to comply with.
We would welcome the opportunity to assist you in formulating a strategy suitable for your own requirements.

COLUMN March 2022
KNOW THE LAW
WRITTEN BY JOANNE MCGURK
Joanne McGurk, Associate Solicitor at Michael Flanigan Solicitors, a specialist firm, advises clients throughout Northern Ireland on all aspects of family law. In this article she discusses your rights in dividing the assets following separation, and the dos and don’ts.
Divorce And Separation; Dividing the Assets Separating from a partner whether you are married or cohabiting, have children, or do not, can be tough, and untangling a life together can be emotional, expensive, and stressful. When it comes to dividing assets, such as the home you have shared or a family business that you have poured time, capital, and energy into, emotions can run high. With so much information and misinformation being available online and on social media, the idea of dividing the assets following a separation can appear to be an insurmountable task but one way to help you to stay in control is to understand your rights and what, by law, you can expect when separating, and to know about and avoid the common pitfalls to save both parties undue expense and stress. If you are married or in a civil partnership or have children together you are entitled to share your partner’s assets. This could mean a legal right over any property, savings, or business even if you are not the legal owner. The principle of fairness underpins the division of assets and in making decisions in these matters the court considers many factors. These include the length of the marriage, the income, earning capacity, property, and other financial resources of each party, and the financial needs, obligations, and responsibilities which each of the parties may have. Further considerations are the standard of living enjoyed by the parties, any physical or mental disabilities of the parties, and in some cases, the conduct
of the parties. In cases involving children, when dividing the assets, the children’s welfare and needs will be the priority. This will include their housing needs and the partner considered to be their main carer will often be allowed to stay in the former matrimonial home. If you are unmarried or not in a civil partnership the division of assets are significantly different to those described above. What you will take from the relationship will generally be any assets held in your name. Contrary to popular opinion, living together for a lengthy period of time does not automatically give you rights to your partner’s assets including your co-habiting home, irrespective of the bills you have paid or financial contributions you have made. It is possible to take your partner to court and argue that any contribution you have made entitles you to a share of the property, for example, however this can be difficult to prove, and evidence will be required to establish an intention to create a shared interest. If you are purchasing a co-habiting home, it is possible for the property to be owned jointly and this does not have to be in equal shares. This ideally should be done at the time of the purchase or as soon as the intention to create a joint asset arises. There are steps parties can take to make separation less painful and, in my experience, there are universal pitfalls that parties can fall into following separation that can make reaching a settlement more

difficult. Taking a few simple steps and avoiding others can lead to a faster result and a less expensive settlement. The Dos • Consult a solicitor at the outset - a specialist family lawyer can help everyone understand where they stand, help you prioritise your needs, and provide you with the options available to you • Discuss financial arrangements with your partner (although never agree on anything without speaking to your legal representative first) • Be prepared to compromise and negotiate. It is important to have a realistic expectation of what you want to achieve, and a family solicitor will be able to advise you of your options. • Keep all of your recent financial information such as bank statements, wage slips, and P60s. This is required to provide you with accurate legal advice specific to your case and if court proceedings are necessary, these documents will be required to be submitted to the court. The Don’ts • Do not use children as tactical weapons. • Do not agree on a settlement with your partner without discussing it with your legal representative. Although it is rare for agreements reached directly in discussions between the parties to be upheld by the court as binding, there is always a danger that this may happen or that your spouse or former partner will insist that they will not make any other proposal. • Divorce and Financial Settlements • Family and Children Law • Educational Law • Personal Injury

My Top 5 Tips for Choosing the Best Divorce Lawyer for You Divorce is never easy. Breakups are messy - feelings are hurt, emotions are high and often children are caught in the middle. If ever you find yourself in the unhappy position of requiring advice on marital breakdown, it is important that you pick the right person to represent you. Here is my advice of key qualities to look for in a divorce lawyer: divorce matters as amicably as possible. The ability of your lawyer to firmly and effectively mediate in your best interests is important in achieving this.
1: Someone on Your Side Divorce can be one of the most stressful and emotionally difficult events in a person’s life and it is a process, depending on the value of marital assets and the acrimony between the parties, that can take months or even years to resolve. When choosing a divorce lawyer, it is firstly important that you are comfortable with and confident in your legal representative that you feel that they are on your side and representing your interests. 2: Experience Divorce proceedings are by no means easy. Aside from applying for the initial Decree Nisi citing a legal ground for divorce, there may be complicated financial matters to negotiate. You may both own property, either separately or jointly. There may be pensions, shares, policies and savings to negotiate upon, or an interest in a business. Perhaps your spouse has a higher income than you and you seek maintenance. Perhaps you have limited information as to your spouse’s assets and don’t know where to begin. You may need
advice regarding the children and custody and contact arrangements. A good divorce lawyer will have specialist experience in all of the above and will be able to fully guide, assist and support you in terms of your legal rights and entitlement in all of these areas. 3: Communication is key Divorce, like many other areas of law, involves its fair share of legal jargon. It is important that your lawyer can communicate effectively with you and explain to you the various stages and processes involved in proceedings to allow you to make the best decisions for you. As well as being able to communicate with you as their client, a key skill to look for in a divorce lawyer is the ability to effectively negotiate in your best interests. When a marriage breaks down and there are children involved, whether minor or grown, it is always in the best interests of the family unit as a whole for parties, where possible, to try to resolve 152
4: Strategic & Pragmatic In my experience, a great divorce lawyer should have the ability to strategize to achieve your ‘end goal expectations’ in divorce proceedings but they also should have the knowledge to manage these expectations. Whilst a sympathetic and supportive ear from your lawyer is always appreciated when looking at end goals, they should also be able to provide a voice of reason when discussing how realistically achievable these goals are. Having a lawyer who can provide you with this advice from their experience will help you avoid a disappointing outcome and protracted legal costs. 5: Costs conscious Like many other professions, when it comes to providing
legal advice and litigating, time tends to cost money. Despite public opinion of ‘fat cat’ lawyers, no good divorce lawyer ever enjoys obtaining a healthy settlement for their client only to have the client hand them the whole lot back in legal costs. It is important that from the outset of any legal proceedings, you instruct a solicitor who will be mindful from the very beginning of the issue of costs and guide you on whether the actions you wish to take in proceedings are merited and cost effective. Ultimately, very few people come out of a divorce feeling wonderful. In my view, the lawyer you choose and the qualities they can bring to your case will make all the difference in navigating you through this difficult process and achieving the best outcome for you and your family.
