Creating the most exceptional homes

Kris Turnbull has challenged the way luxury interior design is interpreted and the brand’s signature aesthetic has evolved to become unmistakable.Over the past 12 months, Kris Turnbull Studios has never wavered from its ethos and vision to create beautiful spaces for it’s clients around the world. Throughout the past year Kris completed a number of landmark projects across the UK & Ireland in private homes including a stunning country estate in Ascot, a city pad in Dublin, holiday homes in Portstewart & Donegal as well as progressing international projects in Marbella & Quinta do Lago. ‘We understood quickly the importance of communication and taking an empathetic approach whilst faced with so much uncertainty,’ says Kris. ‘Now we speak even more regularly with our clients and continue to work extremely closely with our suppliers, understanding that they too, especially smaller businesses, are facing hurdles. We support them as much as we can with an optimistic, fl exible attitude. ‘In a creative, tactile industry like ours, the past year has actually emphasised the importance of face-to-face contact’ says Kris, ‘and we’ve seen a huge burst of appreciation from clients for being able to experience materials physically with their senses.’ Kris Turnbull Studios has enjoyed witnessing clients demonstrate a renewed passion for being able to see and handle pieces and designs in person, whether to enjoy the feel of a piece of fabric, examine the veining in a slab of marble or appreciate the dappled light e ect from a customised chandelier. As people have started paying much closer attention to their homes, it’s been exciting to see them take such interest in all the beautiful materials and furnishings they can have around them.’ The studio has also been busy adapting its design schemes to cater for the way in which we now live, focusing on versatile layouts and designs that can function as both working-from-home environments and spaces in which families can come together. This year, Kris Turnbull Studios is embarking on a number of exciting new schemes throughout the UK, Ireland & the rest of Europe, focusing mainly on the Algarve. ‘As a brand working globally, we’re always inspired by our connection with the rest of the world.’ Says Kris.

“Throughout 2021 we will maintain our outwardlooking approach, collaborating with clients across the UK & wider Europe. ‘We are not only trying to be the best of the best in terms of quality and creativity in design but also a love of adventure and celebrating other cultures.”

1. What do you love most about your job?

I love everything about my job. There’s a saying ‘If you do what you love, you’ll never have to work a day in your life’ and I live by that mantra. I love every aspect of my job. We off er a wide range of treatments from waxing to refl exology, but my favourite treatment is the Dermafrac Advanced Facial Therapy, which I introduced to my salon just before the fi rst lockdown. This treatment consists of a combination of microdermabrasion, micro needling and serum infusion and the results are outstanding. I can’t wait to get back to work, we’ve had to reschedule so many clients to adhere to government guidelines and I do miss the craic and banter.

I’ve built up such a great rapport with my clients over the past 20 years of being a beauty therapist. Not only do I have a skilled team working with me, but they are so loyal to me and my clients.

2. What has been your career highlight to date?

Obviously opening my own salon in 2016 and within three years we built up a fi ve star reputation and we were awarded ‘highly commended’ at the NI Hair and Beauty Awards. The biggest highlight is the daily appreciation from my clients. We also have quite a few well known and celebrity clients, but with client confi dentiality I can’t unveil who they are!

3. What are your favourite hobbies/ activities outside of work?

I’m partial to a good karaoke night and my party pieces are Alanis Morisette’s, One Hand in My Pocket and Ironic. I also love horse riding and although I don’t get to ride as often as I did when I was younger, I just love getting out in the fresh air and it’s very therapeutic. Horses are so intuitive and can sense your mood. They totally relax me.

4. What is your daily routine?

I wake up around 7am and put a wash on before my two kids Blake (10 years) and Jessica (9 years) get up. I get them breakfast and ready for school, then do the school run. We’ve just got a new puppy Bruno too, so when I return to work he’s going to have to go to doggy daycare, i.e my mum! I arrive at work around 9.30am and the fi rst thing I do is ask the girls what we’re doing for lunch. I’m always thinking about my stomach! I do treatments until 2pm, then spend an hour checking emails, then I head to collect the kids from school. From 3pm until the kids go to bed I’m on ‘mummy duty’ but I always make sure I get to watch Coronation Street.

When the kids are in bed I catch up on paperwork, placing orders, doing the salon’s social media campaigns, then watch Netfl ix. I’m lucky that I do have a healthy work/ life balance. I really feel for mummies who work full time. It must be so stressful. I’m so grateful that my staff keep the salon running smoothly in my absence.

5. Do you have a specifi c fi tness regime?

Before the pandemic I had started with a personal trainer S Louise Fitness in Moneyreagh and she really pushed me hard. I was starting to see the results then lockdown started. I’ll defi nitely go back to her when lockdown is over. Horse riding is also great exercise and helps to strengthen your legs, as well as being great for your mental health.

6. Do you have any tips for staying positive during this time?

Always remember that these dark days won’t last forever. I’ve tried to reinvent my business by introducing selling skincare products on-line. In fact, people from all over Europe are now buying my Epionce skincare range. I think during lockdown people have had more time to think about their skincare regime. I would defi nitely encourage business owners to try to adapt their marketing strategy and remain positive. I do think that we will all come out the other end with a greater appreciation for what we have and slow down a bit. Your health is your wealth.

7. What do you think is the best thing about living in Northern Ireland?

It’s like a small community and the scenery is stunning. No matter where you live in Northern Ireland, you’re close to the coast and mountains. I live in Killinchy and feel blessed to live so close to small beaches and the Mourne Mountains. Everything is accessible in Killinchy, should you want the peace and quiet or the buzz of Belfast’s thriving pub and restaurant scene. There are amazing restaurants in Killinchy too and lots of fresh produce.

8. What is your mantra or favourite quote that you live by?

“Live Every Day as if It’s Your Last”. Do what makes you happy and push yourself out of your comfort zone. Eat the cake, dive into the sea and if you feel like doing something, do it. Don’t live with regrets. I did a charity sky dive and am very spontaneous. I hope this happiness and spontaneity rubs off on my kids.

9. Who has been your biggest infl uence?

To be honest, I’m a free spirit and do my own thing. I like to go my own direction, but I’m lucky that my mum has inspired and supported all my choices, even if she didn’t initially agree with them.

Time for a new perspective Introducing the Y Island

A sense of the new kitchen culture: aesthetics and practicality are elegantly combined to make our lives easier and more fulfilling. As an alternative, the wooden Take-Away features with the same function bring warmth into the otherwise rather cool look of the marble decor and Fenix stainless steel decor.

The best recipe for the family kitchen? Plenty of room to manoeuvre and an extra large amount of storage space, short distances and a communication hub at the heart of the home – this is how living together can be lovingly designed and perfectly organised. Thanks to the carefully selected details, The recipe? Many good ideas As lockdown is lifted our doors are now opened such as the panelled splashback and the combination of wood effect, glass and dark, matt lacquered panelled doors, the signs all point to comfort and homeliness. Spices can be stored on the recess shelf, with practical access. An optimised waste separation system installed below the sink adds to the tidiness in the same way as the design-oriented pullout shelves.
