Revolutionary Mini Tummy Tuck New non-surgical treatment can reduce fat by up to 40% A new non-surgical ‘mini tummy tuck’ treatment is now available in Northern Ireland. We learn about the must-have treatment that is in record demand. Summer is a stone’s throw away, and whether you plan on spending your summer holidays in a farflung and exotic location or a bit closer to home, most of us are facing the same predicament. Namely, how we can blast our body into shape in time to slip into that body-hugging tee that we bought perhaps a little too optimistically last year, because let’s face it, those pesky few pounds that were supposed to melt away - well, they haven’t lost themselves. Release those deep breaths - there’s hope in sight, and it’s called The Mini Tummy Tuck. Over the past few years there’s been a growing trend in body contouring and body shaping procedures that shrink love handles and reduce fat and cellulite on the abdomen, belly, back, arms, thighs, hips and buttocks. The best part? It’s completely non-invasive. No surgery, no knives, no long recovery times. Yep - we’re serious. Therapie Clinic was one of the first beauty clinics to start the revolution in Northern Ireland, and they’re helping clients reduce stubborn fat deposits for good - without going under the knife. The treatment has come all the

way from Hollywood with a celebrity following that includes Kim Kardashian, Heidi Klum and Britney Spears. The clinic has reported a record demand for the treatment since it’s launch. There is now a waiting list in two of the clinics in Northern Ireland.

You can typically expect to see results within two weeks It almost sounds too good to be true, but the process is grounded in scientific research which has found that applying heat and cold to troublesome areas helps melt fat cells while leaving skin and muscle tissue unaffected. Treatment takes place using FDA-approved technology, with individual sessions lasting up to 70 minutes. Patients meet with Therapie Clinic’s specialists to discuss the best treatment options for their Mini Tummy Tuck, depending on their individual body shape. The Tummy Tuck employs a bespoke approach of freezing and heating techniques in order to maximise fat loss. The blended programme can

reduce fat by up to 40%. You can typically expect to see results within two weeks. It’ll take about 90 days to see the full effects of the body blitzing fat detox. One of the best features of the Mini Tummy Tuck is that it can work for different body types: it’s great for those who are fit and near their optimum weight but still have problem love handles or cellulite. The treatment is also hugely beneficial where clients want to target their tummy area post pregnancy.

If you want to see measurable results; toned skin and an improved silhouette, try the non-invasive mini-tummy tuck at Therapie Clinic. It’s a fraction of the cost of a surgical procedure, and you can get straight back to normal activities immediately. Clinics include Donegall Place in Belfast, Carlisle Road in L/ Derry, Merchants Quay in Newry and a new clinic in Enniskillen. Call Therapie Clinic for a free consultation on 08000 121 565 or see www.therapieclinic.co.uk.

A DREAM COME TRUE SOUTH BELFAST LIFE TALKS TO LOCAL SINGER PHILIPPA O'HARA, WHO STARRED IN HIT BBC SHOW ‘OVER THE RAINBOW’ AND IS CURRENTLY PERFORMING ACROSS THE COUNTRY. WHAT SCHOOL DID YOU ATTEND? I attended St. Anne’s Primary School and Rathmore Grammar School. We live about five minutes away from both so it was very handy for my family! I then went on to study Drama at B.I.F.H.E and Queen’s University, Belfast. WHAT ARE YOUR CHILDHOOD MEMORIES OF SOUTH BELFAST? My childhood was really amazing! I had lots of friends and we played outside everyday, even in the pouring rain! We were very lucky to have a big back garden and to be so close to Woodlands playing fields where we played games like Rounders, Football and Stuck in the Mud! On the occasional hot day we would have the most epic water fights. All games were followed by an

almost hourly trip to Finaghy shops for sweets! WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR CAREER PATH TO DATE? All I ever wanted to do was sing, however it wasn't until I was around 16 that I realised it might be possible to make a career out of it. I chose to study Drama at university as a means of building my confidence as I was a very shy child. The biggest event in my career to date came in 2010 when I auditioned for the BBC talent show ‘Over The Rainbow’. I beat almost 10,000 girls throughout the country to a place in the top 20! I got to work closely with Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber and even had afternoon tea in his mansion! I now sing professionally all over Northern Ireland as a member of several different projects including The James Huish Band, Magic of the Musicals and as a member of 2 twopieces, the first with an amazing guitarist, Gary Lockhart and the second ‘Songbirds’ with my sister, Jolene. We recently launched our own website www.songbirdsni.com. I am also the singing teacher for the Belfast School of Performing Arts (B.S.P.A) afternoon school. Most recently, my sister and I landed a residency at Flame Restaurant Belfast. HOW DO YOU SPEND A TYPICAL DAY AT WORK? I don’t think there is such as thing as a typical day at work when you’re a singer! On a daily basis I rehearse for whatever show or gig is coming up next. On the day of the event I usually get to the venue early to set up the gear and to sound check. Then I cross my fingers that everything will run smoothly!! Within B.S.P.A. I am fortune enough to work with very talented and enthusiastic students. A typical day at B.S.P.A. involves lots of fun and laughs, they are a joy to teach! DESCRIBE THE ATMOSPHERE OF LIVING AND WORKING IN SOUTH BELFAST. I think there is a lovely atmosphere within south Belfast. When I returned

12 South BelfastLife

home after ‘Over The Rainbow’ I found my posters had been put up all over south Belfast, in the shops, bars and restaurants which I felt was extremely kind and supportive of the community. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE RESTAURANT IN SOUTH BELFAST? I love to cook far too much to eat out! I find it so enjoyable and very therapeutic. However, I do like to go out for a drink quite regularly and my favourite bar is The King’s Head. The staff are brilliant and the atmosphere is great. The cocktails are pretty awesome too! WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE HIDDEN GEM IN SOUTH BELFAST? That would have to be Randals on the Lisburn Road. I absolutely LOVE this spot. They do the most amazing crepes in the world and their Caribbean Chicken is to die for! It is my favourite place in Belfast for lunch. The staff are so lovely and on a sunny day, a walk down the Lisburn Road and lunch in Randals is pretty much unbeatable!

The Chance to Change Lives Four years ago, Ian Campbell went through a very tough time. His business failed, as a result, he lost his home and was diagnosed with cancer. He was convinced that his life was over. However, rather than feeling defeated, Ian decided to use his skills to do something good. He travelled to the Philippines, returning to a country he had previously fallen in love with, to build an orphanage, but then decided to think bigger, rather than one foundation, why not aim for ten? Ten Foundations was born. Currently, Ten Foundations runs one orphanage, but have hopes to expand to more very soon. Ten Foundations opened on the Lisburn Road in May and is already making a difference. The shop was fitted using recycled shipping pallets and all work was carried out by volunteers, including all joinery and electrical work. Ten Foundations Lisburn Road is a coffee shop and a charity shop in one. The most important stock in the shop is bags made in the Philippines. The bags are made from recycled tetra paks, rice bags, drinking straws and off cuts of fabric. There are now over 30 mothers, with 150 children between them, making the bags, and the industry has changed the lives of the people involved. Bag making has had a hugely positive impact on all the people in the community where they are made, just one year ago these mothers were living in complete poverty, with no money, no education and no hope. Today, they are earning up to 10,000 peso a month, and are able to send their children to school and support their families. Ten Foundations is helping to rebuild their homes and install electric.

Ian Campbell says that he wants to give people the ability to change their own lives, not just hand out money. As well as stocking the beautiful, brightly coloured bags, Ten Foundations are starting a soap making programme, which fits with the Ten Foundations ethos of low tech easy to make products giving opportunity to people in need, and hopefully stock should be in store in time for Christmas. At the moment, Ten Foundations are trying to raise one million peso (approximately £15,000) to buy land to build a shelter and livelihood centre and alternative learning centre, as at the moment, Ten Foundations can only rent space in the Phillipines. All of the profits from the shop, from coffee, bags and all other stock, goes straight back into the charity.

July using a Filipino style pedicab and calling at all the hospitals on route to raise money. Keep an eye on Ten Foundations in August for their special back to school ‘buy a bag, give a bag’ promotion. When you buy a bag, they’ll give another to a child in the Phillipines. 355 Lisburn Road, Belfast www.tenfoundations.org www.facebook.com/tenfoundations

A cycle from Belfast to Dublin is planned to take place between 18th and 20th

Get Bikini Ready The summer season is upon us and as we think about hitting the beach, there may be a few inches to shed before we slip on the dreaded bikini. We all have areas of concern which we feel could look more toned and trim. The summer months can be busy with kids off school, that we find it hard fitting in gym sessions and planning a healthy eating regime, and we often feel the need to resort to a quick fix for that feel good factor. Body wraps offer instant inch loss of up to 20 inches, and firmness to the skin whist aiding the removal of toxins from the body. Beauty Haven offer the Harley Body wrap, which is an Aloe Vera based treatment. Warm bandages are soaked in Aloe Vera solution which penetrates the layers of the skin. This allows the solution to reach connective tissues which hold fat cells and release the build up of water, impurities and toxins. Once toxins have been removed, the body’s natural elastin holds the new sculptured shape which has formed in the wrapping process, to make fitting intothat special summer dress so much easier. Priced at £55 it’s a small price to pay to look great in that bikini. A course of six treatments is recommended for maximum results. Toy Story While Pixar have stated they have no plans to make 'Toy Story 4', that message clearly hasn't reached Inchmarlo Preparatory School, Belfast, who have stolen a march by staging their very own version of the hugely popular animated children's series. In a musical written by Mr Graeme Francey, 'Toy Story 4' played out to three packed audiences in June. The pupils from P1 to P4 took centre stage and showcased their acting, singing and dancing talents with a wonderfully entertaining show. Parents and grandparents clapped and cheered as the boys sang their hearts out to songs old and new, from Madness to Avicii, Bruno Mars to Oasis. Under the musical direction of Mrs Antoinette McMichael, a school band made up of pupils, accompanied the boys throughout.

SUPPORT & ADVICE SOUTH BELFAST LIFE TALKS TO LOCAL SCHOOL TEACHER AND AUTHOR CHRISTINE HAMILL. CHRISTINE’S NEW BOOK ‘B IS FOR BREAST CANCER’ TELLS THE STORY OF HER BATTLE WITH CANCER AND OFFERS HELP AND ADVICE FOR THOSE GOING THROUGH THE SAME SITUATION WHAT SCHOOL DID YOU ATTEND? I grew up in Tyrone and went to St Patrick’s Academy in Dungannon. I went on to study English Literature at Queen’s in the early eighties and went back in the nineties to do a Postgraduate Certificate in Education. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR CAREER PATH TO DATE? I was always interested in the arts so when, shortly after leaving university, I saw an advert for a Gallery Manager for a local art gallery I applied and got the job. After that I worked as Administrator for a visual arts magazine then changed course and went into education. I moved to Spain for a while to teach in a co-ed private school. I also worked with IBM Germany in the mid nineties, writing English grammar for an interactive language course they were developing, and then I moved to Bristol where I worked in Soundwell College of Further Education. My son was born in Bristol and when he was just 6 months old I returned to Ireland. I didn’t work again until he was three and could come to work with me! – to Queen’s University Out of School Club. I also had a short spell doing historical research at The Ulster Historical Foundation – I loved that, from there I moved on to full time teaching.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR BOOK? I wrote B is for Breast Cancer while I was undergoing initial cancer treatment. I felt confused and bewildered by the whole process and writing the book was my way of making sense of it. Others will find it helpful in dealing with the trauma of a cancer diagnosis as it is an A-Z guide offering help and tips (practical and emotional) for many of the experiences a breast cancer patient encounters from A is for Anxiety right through to Z is for Zeds (you can get a bit fixated on your sleep when you’re having cancer treatment). I’ve had such a wonderful positive response to the book so far. Who’d have thought cancer could actually bring about something positive in your life! WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE CAFE IN SOUTH BELFAST? That would have to be the café at the Ulster Museum. I spent hours upon hours at the museum when my son was a toddler. We’d wander round looking at the exhibits and then I’d treat us to a snack in the museum café. Now the museum has this fabulous new café. It is a great afternoon out – you see the exhibitions, have a nice drink/meal, and best of all, the café looks out at Botanic Gardens.

I’ve had such a wonderful positive response to the book so far. Who’d have thought cancer could actually bring about something positive in your life!

18 South BelfastLife

HOW DO YOU LIKE TO RELAX IN YOUR SPARE TIME? Well, I work full time as a teacher and I’m a single parent so I don’t have much time for relaxing. However, I do like to read (and to write, obviously!). I sing in the Sing for Life community choir – a joint venture between Cancerfocus NI/Crescent Arts Centre. Apart from that, what I like best is to spend time lazing around watching TV with my son – mostly comedy. We love Modern Family, but Dr Who and Harry Hill’s TV Burp will always be up there as favourites as they saw us through the cancer when my son was younger. WHAT DO YOU LIKE BEST ABOUT LIVING IN SOUTH BELFAST? I love south Belfast and, as I’ve lived here longer than anywhere else and my good friends are here, It is home. It has everything: schools, shops, university, theatre, arts centres, cinema, parks and a hospital that proved very useful at a certain period in my life! What more could you want? B is for Breast Cancer can be purchased from Easons and other leading book sellers. The book is reviewed on page 24 and there is an opportunity for you to win a copy.

B is for Breast Cancer

When Christine Hamill was diagnosed with cancer, she felt isolated and confused. However, during diagnosis and treatment, she turned those feelings into something positive when she started writing B is for Breast Cancer, an AZ guide filled with advice, tips, reassurance and sympathetic explanations. The result is an honest and frank account of the emotional and physical impact of a cancer diagnosis. Written without sentimentality, the book offers bite-size chunks of help and hope - a daily pep talk to anyone affected by the disease.

24 South BelfastLife

B is for Breast Cancer is a unique look at breast cancer from a patient’s point of view; from diagnosis and treatment to recovery. Christine Hamill’s candid approach to telling of her experience means that no subject is taboo and no reaction is unjustified. She is open about the anger she felt and also addresses the feelings of guilt she experienced when it came to telling her young son that she had cancer. Having been there and done that, Christine Hamill is able to offer practical advice and tips. She encourages others to seek support and ask questions so as they are not kept in the dark about their own condition. B is for Breast Cancer combines candour with humour to create a guide that is honest and accessible. It is an exceptional and personal account

of one person’s journey with cancer, which undoubtedly will bring comfort and reassurance to others who have just been diagnosed, those going through treatment and those who have come out the other side as well as providing an insight for those who are supporting a loved one going through a similar situation. We have 3 copies of B is for Breast Cancer to give away. Simply answer the following question. B is for Breast Cancer covers every letter of the English alphabet - but how many letters are in the alphabet? Working with your Estate Agent When the time comes to sell your home it is important to ensure that you entrust your sale to a reputable estate agent if the stress of selling is to be minimised.

As your selling agent, we share your objectives - to achieve the fastest sale at the highest possible price with minimum disruption to your lifestyle. So help us to help you. After all - we’re on your side!

However, the most successful sales tend to be those where the seller and agent work hand in hand during the marketing process. Here are some pointers:

Douglas Huston Estate Agents Tel: 028 9068 3711

• Be open with your agent about any problems with the property. Even if these cannot be solved, awareness of an issue could save a sale. • Ensure your agent is properly informed about which fixtures and fittings will be staying/going. •Ideally your agent should accompany all viewings, but if you show the buyers round yourself, immediately let your agent know how the viewing went, so they can follow-up. • Keep the house and garden clean and tidy at all times – you never know when you might get a short-notice viewing, or interested parties peering over the fence. • Aim to be as flexible as possible over viewing times and completion dates. • Listen constructively to your agent’s feedback and recommendations. 26 South BelfastLife

Families on the Move That room or corner of the garden that has been their special place for most of the child’s life is about to be taken away from them, as they are rocketed out of their comfort zone into unknown territory. After you have made the decision to move, child psychologists usually advise telling the children as soon as you can. They are certain to find out one way or another and being up front with them will enable you to manage the process better and stay in control.

Gareth Gibson from Huston Estate Agents discusses property in the South Belfast area. Showing your home to prospective purchasers can be stressful enough, but children add an extra dimension and their needs should also be considered. Moving house might be logical and exciting for an adult, but the fear of the unknown can be upsetting for children.

This is one of the many reasons why we always aim to accompany purchasers around our clients’ property. So our respectful advice is this: ideally, leave the viewing to the trained agent and take the children (and the dog) for a walk! Happy Selling! For more advice on any aspect of your move, please feel free to call us on 028 90 683 711.

Parents nevertheless need to be sensitive when discussing the move, and make a point of highlighting the exciting aspects of a new home. Ask your child what they would like to find in their ideal home. They don’t have to have a major influence on your decision, but their apparent involvement in the process will pay dividends. Likewise, if your children regard the move as a positive thing they are more likely to be co-operative when buyers come to view your property. A stressrelated temper-tantrum as the buyer walks through your door is to be avoided at all costs! Indeed, no matter how sweet your children may be, they are more likely to be a distraction to a prospective buyer than an advantage.

IN PROFILE FORMER ULSTER AND IRELAND RUGBY STAR PADDY WALLACE TELLS US ...

“WHY I LOVE... LISBURN ROAD” So far I've been 'living the dream' doing what I love and getting paid to do it. Now I'm entering the big unknown! The 'Afterlife" has been daunting but fun and has taken me completely out of my comfort zone! I have set up The Paddy Wallace Rugby Academy with the help of Tesco and have 5 weeks of camps planned for the summer with Belfast Harlequins hosting on the 28th July to the 1st August. For more info go to Paddywallacerugby.com.

HOW DO YOU SPEND A TYPICAL DAY AT WORK?

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE RESTAURANT/CAFE ON THE LISBURN ROAD? I’ve always been a fan of the coffee and service in Espresso Elements and Slims Kitchen is such a good concept, i just wish i'd thought of the idea first!

WHERE’S YOUR FAVOURITE HIDDEN GEM ON THE LISBURN ROAD? Andrew Watson Hair, he's a friend who has just opened his own place just across from The Chelsea. He is an awesome hairdresser and a better bloke as he supports Utd, like myself!

At the moment it changes everyday, it will usually involve a few hours on the computer in the morning replying to emails and keeping my website and social media updated then perhaps a meeting or two. I’m very conscious about opening doors to new opportunities now that the boots are 'hung up' so networking has become very important.

HOW DO YOU RELAX IN YOUR SPARE TIME? There isn’t much spare time at the moment, but i do love a nice meal and a drink with friends so there is plenty to choose from on the Lisburn Road.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT THE LISBURN ROAD? I like the coffee in Espresso Elements, the food in Slims Kitchen and Yellow Door, the meat from Murphys Butchers, a haircut at Andrew Watsons and nights out in The Albany.

WHERE DO YOU LIKE TO SOCIALISE ON THE LISBURN ROAD? The Albany is a great bar and restaurant, whether it’s for lunch and a glass of wine or a few pints with your mates on a Saturday night - it ticks all boxes.

Slims Healthy Kitchen.

UPSTYLING PRE-LOVED FURNITURE

Nestled on the Lisburn Road is a quaint charity shop full of personality; Vintage Glow receives discarded pre-loved furniture, provides some tender loving care, and restores it with a charming vintage flare. So many homes are filled with beautiful pieces of furniture sitting in storage or up in an attic because it’s outdated. Vintage Glow is in the business of upstyling outdated furniture: “It was the vintage style of the furniture that attracted me into the shop; their stock was decorated beautifully” exclaims Jacqueline, a returning customer, “the staff were delighted to explain how each piece I liked was painted and decorated.”

Every items unique quality is enhanced by smooth chalk paint and rustic décor (ideal for the environmentally conscious, and safe to be applied on baby or children’s furniture). Unlike many oil based paints, Autentico is perfect for nonpainters; the water based formula lends itself easy to apply on just about any surface; no sanding, no priming, no hassle. The paint dries to a matte texture and is finished with one or more of Autentico’s seven waxes - the only difficulty is choosing from a plethora of over 140 colours. For those ‘DIY’ individuals, Vintage Glow holds workshops that teach various painting techniques, embossing, decoupage, and crackle

Workshop feedback has been wonderful; painting is a useful and tactile skill to learn, and many of the customers describe it as a “therapeutic experience”.

One of the workshop participants’ commented: “After telling my teenage daughter about it we attended the class together and learned all about distressing, crackling, and decoupage. We really enjoyed learning in such a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere. “I would highly recommend it for beginners of any age! Since the class I have painted my fireplace and a nest of tables; my next project will be the bedroom furniture!”

Freshly Baked in Belfast PETER OLIVER BARBER SHOP ON THE LISBURN ROAD IS ONE OF THE MOST FAMILIAR SITES IN SOUTH BELFAST, BUT THAT IS JUST THE BEGINNING. NOT ONLY ARE THERE SALONS IN THE EAST OF THE CITY, BUT OLIVERS ARE NOW BRANCHING INTO THE FOOD BUSINESS Manager Ashley Gribben outside Oliver’s Coffee Bar.

What has been your career path since school? I Studied marketing and management at university in Newcastle upon Tyne, then worked my way up from online marketing assistant to senior marketing manger. What brought you back to Northern Ireland? Although I enjoyed my career in marketing, I wanted to pursue my other love: food and in particular cafe culture, and I wanted to do it at home. So, I worked in some of Dublin's top coffee shops and restaurants, and enrolled in an intensive baking/cooking course at Dublin's top Bakery school run by Blathnaid Bergin, before opening Oliver’s Coffee Bar. Have you always had a passion for food/baking? My love for baking stepped up a notch a few years ago when I started to bring in weekly bakes for my work colleagues. The more restaurants I went to, and the more I saw, the more I wanted to do it myself. Whats your typical day at Oliver’s Coffee Bar consist of? I knew the catering business was hard work but I probably didn't realise how hard. I have a great team around me but there is so much to do. From early morning I'm baking, then checking deliveries, maintaining displays, serving customers, then checking stock and reordering, and all the time trying to please customers and staff. It is hard work but it's the first job I've really loved, even the stressful days are so rewarding.

36 South BelfastLife

What’s your signature dish? Our pulled pork sandwich, - freshly baked soft white roll, slow cooked pork and chipotle mayo. For dessert our beautiful three tiered carrot cake and our customers are always raving about our creamy scrambled eggs. Belfast has become a great place for eateries and restaurants, what sets Olivers apart? All our food is freshly baked on the premises and beautifully displayed. As we say in the catering world "we eat with our eyes" so we take great care in how everything looks. We spent a lot of time sourcing our tea and coffee suppliers, we are the only restaurant in NI brewing Jing tea, it's used in Heston Blumenthal's Fat Duck for example. All our baristas are trained to a very high standard with at least three years espresso experience. Do you bake everything on the premises? Yes - aside from a few gluten free items which we buy in due to not having a gluten free kitchen. We are up with the birds every morning to freshly bake bread, scones and croissants which are served with delicious homemade raspberry jam. We also make our sandwiches, salads, soups, pies, cakes and tray-bakes in house. You must have a very experienced team? Yes, we have a great team. Stephen Chisholm the "Great Irish Bake Off Winner" bakes our bread in as well as his fabulous coffee and walnut cake and the lightest cupcakes you have ever

tasted. We also have Susan Clarke, Paula Finlay and Claire Hunt who bake the best scones in Belfast every morning and juggle breakfast orders while getting all of the lunch menu prepped and ready to go including our super healthy salads and sandwiches. IN PROFILE CAROLINE MURPHY FROM AIKEN PR TELLS US ...

“WHY I LOVE... ORMEAU ROAD” Path for a long walk and to feed the ducks. We often stop at one of the many coffee shops for a cuppa and a quick bite.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR CAREER PATH TO DATE? I completed a law degree at Queen’s University and after realising that court life wasn't for me I took a year out to travel around Australia, before returning to complete my masters in Communications Advertising and Marketing at University of Ulster Jordanstown. I was lucky enough to get one day a week of work experience in Aiken PR and nine years later I haven't looked back!

HOW DO YOU SPEND A TYPICAL DAY AT WORK? The first thing I do is review the newspapers and Twitter for any stories that may affect my clients and to make sure I am up to speed on breaking news stories. After that there is no such thing as a typical day, which is why I love my work so much. One day I will be organising an event at Stormont, drafting press releases or attending a photo shoot and the next I will be heading to the country side for a farm visit. The variation is great and my working week flies in.

HOW DO YOU RELAX IN YOUR SPARE TIME? My weekends are precious, so I love nothing more than spending time with my husband and daughter. If the weather is good we head to Ormeau Park or the Lagan Tow

38 South BelfastLife

WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT LIVING IN SOUTH BELFAST? Just having everything you need on your doorstep and within walking distance is fantastic. There are also some great retailers on the Ormeau Road where you can get local produce at great prices.

WHERE DO YOU LIKE TO SOCIALISE ON THE ORMEAU ROAD? I know it may not be very cool, but I don't think you can beat a night out upstairs in the Errigle Inn. I never fail to have a great time whenever we go there.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE RESTAURANT/CAFE ON THE ORMEAU ROAD? My husband has an aversion to Indian food

so while my favourite restaurant would be the Bengal Brassiere, I don't get to go too often. He does love a good Chinese though, so Macau is hard to beat for both its food and service.

WHERE’S YOUR FAVOURITE HIDDEN GEM ON THE ORMEAU ROAD? The staff in the Vineyard are excellent and really know their stuff. Also Nicos Pizza on Sunnyside Street serves authentic Italian pizza that never fails to remind me of a great holiday in Rome and Sorrento I once had especially with a glass of the Vineyard’s finest red at hand.

DO YOU FEED YOUR DOG LEFTOVERS? ARE YOU FEEDING YOUR DOG THE LEFT OVERS FROM DINNER? WARNING: THERE IS A RISK OF PANCREATITIS. When I was growing up, we automatically fed leftovers from dinner to Bess, our black labrador, she never complained and I don’t remember her getting sick. However, I have witnessed an upsurge in pancreatitis in dogs in our clinics and now can advise people not to feed your dog scraps from the table. Holiday times like Christmas and Easter, and even summer barbecues bring on trouble for dogs, due to the increase in party food in our homes. Triggers foods for Pancreatitis are high fat and greasy food, bacon fat, sausages, leftovers and spicy foods. Dogs are fed by friends and family who enjoy giving the dog a well-earned treat but for some it comes with a price. When I see a dog with pancreatitis in the waiting room, I can recognise the symptoms immediately, painful belly, hunched up, dull, no appetite and often vomiting. Some dogs will only show signs of not eating. The diagnosis is a blood test, which can be run in 20 minutes, so we often ask people to wait for the results and then we can tailor the treatment to the severity of the condition. Pancreatitis results from inflammation of the pancreas. The pancreas not only produces hormones like insulin but also digestive enzymes, which help breakdown fat and carbohydrates in the diet. These enzymes are normally inactive until they reach the intestinal tract. But when the

pancreas becomes inflamed they activate prematurely and digest the pancreas itself causing tissue death. The process is extremely painful. Dogs that have had an episode of pancreatitis are therefore very likely to get diabetes because when the pancreatic cells die they then no longer produce insulin which is required to regulate the glucose in the blood. Early signs of a susceptible dog can be one that intermittently goes off food for no reason for a couple of days and then returns to normal. Another can be intermittent diarrhoea or vomiting, owners may describe a sensitive stomach. This can be a transient inflammation of the pancreas but not enough to cause vomiting or excessive pain. Treatment in our clinics varies with severity, but is based on pain relief, hydration via intravenous fluids and getting the animal eating again as quickly as possible. This sometimes requires placing an oesophageal feeding tube, so we can maintain nutrition even when the dog does not want to eat yet. Recovery diets are base on low fat content and this often needs to be maintained after recovery to prevent reoccurrence. In severe cases we can see associated liver and kidney problems, which can increase complications and decrease chance of recovery. We warn owners that once a dog has had it once it is likely to get it again if the diet is not closely controlled.

HISTORY

The Life and Work of an Artistic Giant

John Hewitt. (Photo courtesy of Dermott Dunbar).

John Hewitt is and was one of the most influential people in the Ulster arts scene. A huge portion of his life and indeed some of his most prolific time as a writer was spent in South Belfast. With the help of the John Hewitt Society we take a look at the man and the poet. The name John Hewitt may be familiar, a bar in the bustling Cathedral Quarter of the City bears the name, a tribute to the great Belfast poet. Born at 96 Cliftonpark Avenue, Belfast, on 28 October 1907, John Harold Hewitt was a renowned poet, art historian and collector and political activist. Hewitt worked as an employee of Belfast City Council for 29 years in the Museum, before moving to Coventry. He returned to Belfast in 1969. Describing himself as ‘a man of the left’, Hewitt had an active political life and was involved in the British Labour Party, the Fabian

Society and the Belfast Peace League. He was an early advocate of the concept of ‘regionalism’ as a means of establishing personal identity, as opposed to traditional sectarian concepts based on politics or religion. He rooted his own regional identity within the island of Ireland and famously described his identity as Ulster, Irish, British, and European. "I’m an Ulsterman, of planter stock. I was born on the island of Ireland, so secondarily I’m an Irishman. I was born in the British archipelago and

English is my native tongue, so I am British. The British archipelago are offshore to the continent of Europe, so I’m European. This is my hierarchy of values and as far as I’m concerned anyone who omits one step in that sequence of value is falsifying the situation." In 1930 he was appointed Art Assistant at the Belfast Museum and Art Gallery. During the thirties he and his wife Roberta participated in civil rights activism, socialist policies, and the formation of a progressive art group, ‘The Ulster Unit’,

which included John Luke, Colin Middleton and others. At this time Hewitt was also beginning to discover the Glens of Antrim, a landscape and people that continued to influence his poetry for the rest of his life. His influence on the arts in Ulster at the time was significant. In the words of Edna Longley, ‘His cross-sectarian ideal of Regionalism energised writers, painters, and general cultural activity during the post war period. It recovered ancestral voices and provided some of the basis for a second take-off in the 1960s’. In 1957 he moved to Coventry as Art Director of the Herbert Gallery and Museum, returning to Belfast on his retirement in 1972. His most productive period followed his retirement, when he moved back to South Belfast (11 Stockman's Lane, a plaque from the Ulster History Circle now marks his former residence). During that time he published seven new poetry collections, a book on the rhyming weaver-poets of Antrim and Down, and monographs on the artists John Luke and Colin Middleton.

Between 1976 and 1979 he was writer-inresidence at Queen's University, Belfast, and in 1983 was made a freeman of the City of Belfast. In 1978 the Arts Council for Northern Ireland produced a short film about John Hewitt, and he was awarded honorary doctorates from both the University of Ulster and Queen's University, Belfast. John Hewitt died in Belfast on 27 June 1987 and donated his body to Queen’s University for medical research. There was no funeral, but a week later three hundred people gathered in the Lyric Theatre to remember him.

Hewitt’s prolific works include: Collected poems 1932 – 1967 (1969) The Day of the Corncrake: Poems of the Nine Glen (1969) An Ulster Reckoning (1971) Rhyming Weavers (1974) The Chinese Fluteplayer (1974)

Following this event The John Hewitt Society was established, to honour his memory and to encourage the continuing exploration of his ideas and ideals: breaking down parochialism, exclusive concepts of identity, and sectarian hostility towards the ‘other’.

His lasting contribution to the arts in Ulster is recognised in the annual John Hewitt International Summer School organised by the John Hewitt Society. DINING OUT South Belfast Life’s Megan Liddy visits The Chelsea in Belfast.

A Taste Of Excellence

I was lucky enough to finish a glorious, sunny summer day with an evening meal in The Chelsea. After enjoying the blazing sun all day, entering the Chelsea felt like entering a cool oasis. Our table was upstairs in a sun soaked space with floor to ceiling windows, dizzyingly high ceilings and exposed beams. The décor is dominated by neutral tones and dark wood furniture and with opulent textures and ornate silver patterned wallpaper. The room is centred around three crystal chandeliers. The upstairs space is used not just as a restaurant but also as a nightclub in the later evenings. It feels like a bar in an ad, almost impossibly smooth and chic. However, the staff are so welcoming that almost everyone is sure to feel at ease here. As we enjoyed our meal, the space filled up quickly, and although busy, the staff remained attentive to every table and apparently unflappable. The menu offers a broad choice, with something to tickle any palette. As expected, the drinks menu is extensive, with everything from champagne to cider and spirits on offer. We opted to share a bottle Lamberti Pinot Grigio Santepietre. It was very well chosen; smooth, fresh and just the thing for a hot summer evening. To start, I opted for the crispy goats cheese with honey roasted walnuts and beetroot tapenade, while my partner opted for the seafood chowder. When they arrived at our table, the presentation was impeccable. The seafood chowder 52 South BelfastLife

was served in a Le Creuset crockpot resting on a wooden board, along with tomato bread and plenty of softened butter. It was a fairly chunky chowder, made up of smoked cod, haddock and salmon, my partner declared it ‘perfect’. My goats cheese was served on a long platter, the plate was a riot of colour. The cheese was creamy and rich alone, but even better teamed with the tapenade and walnutes. It was faultless. Although we had both opted for the small option, the portions were very generous. For main course, I opted for the Mushroom, Spinach and Truffle linguini with white wine and herb cream sauce, with chicken added. It was glorious. The cream sauce didn’t feel too heavy, served with a variety of mushrooms, accompanied with truffle and onion flavours gave a remarkable depth of flavour. My partner opted for one of the daily specials, a beautiful piece of fresh lemon sole served with caper butter, baby potatoes and an excellent variety of vegetables, including broccoli, asparagus, peas, and courgette and carrot strips. My partner was absolutely delighted with the flavours and declared that if he could have, he would have licked the plate. Again, the portions were extremely generous, and I wondered if I could manage a dessert. After a quick glance at the menu, I quickly decided that I definitely could.

The chocolate delice will satisfy even the most die hard chocoholic. The layered chocolate cake is covered with a dark, sticky, semi solid chocolate sauce, a neat ball of chocolate malteaser ice cream and a strawberry and cherry garnish. Although very rich, it is perfectly portioned and it never felt like too much. My partner opted for the Eton Mess of the day, which was a happy mix between Eton Mess and Banoffee pie. Served in a martini glass, sliced bananas, condensed milk toffee, cream and meringue, it looked as triumphant as it tasted. I will most certainly return to The Chelsea, the excellent service, classy surroundings and marvelous choice on the menu make it a sure pleaser for any occasion, whether it’s a special evening or simply a midweek treat, The Chelsea is sure to satisfy. ROOM WITH A VIEW South Belfast Life’s Philip McLaughlin visits The Grill at The Four Winds On a beautiful, summer evening, seeking great food in relaxing surroundings, my partner and I headed to The Grill at The Four Winds, for what would be an evening of pure indulgence. Having heard great reports from family and friends, we decided this would be the perfect place to enjoy a rare beautiful day. Upon arrival, the attentive waiter escorted us to our table and before we even noticed the restaurant’s interiors, we were immediately won over by the outstanding views, the weather perhaps even giving them greater beauty. Located upstairs, the restaurant, with its floor to ceiling glass windows offers spectacular panoramic views of Belfast for miles. We were also equally impressed by the interior of the restaurant, which gives of a distinctly unique and modern vibe. We ordered drinks and took a few minutes to take in our surroundings. We were pleased to find, that although it was mid-week, the restaurant was busy with couples stealing a quite moment, friends engaged in conversation and families celebrating together. Onto the menu, which afforded a wealth of options. Starters include 54 South BelfastLife

something for every palate including Portavogie prawns, seafood chowder, BBQ Short ribs and jerk chicken tenders. After changing my mind several times, I settled on the trio of soups, while my parter decided on the salt and chilli squid. Both dishes arrived swiftly, and we instantly knew we had chosen well. Excellently presented in espresso cups with homemade bread sticks, the trio of soups included mushroom, spiced pumpkin and vegetable, each delicious and different in their taste. My partner also enjoyed her squids, commenting on the taste and perfect texture. The main menu also offers diners a culinary delight with options such as pan fried seabass, oven roasted hake fillet, pan seared rump of lamb and braised chicken supreme. The Grill has a fine reputation for its steaks and the menu provides diners with plenty of information about the cooking of the meat, as well as the cut, ensuring an informed decision is made. I prefer tender steak and so choose the 8oz fillet steak, while my partner went for the 10oz rib-eye steak. Again, presentation certainly didn’t disappoint. My steak was perfectly cooked and served with delicious hand cut chunky chips, onion rings and green peppercorn sauce.

I can never resist dessert and was won over by the Ice Cream Sundae - a must for anyone with a sweet tooth. My partner also enjoyed her double chocolate cookie slider. After our meal we enjoyed a perfectly chilled drink and relaxed in the stunning surroundings of the restaurant with its wonderful views for a while longer, before the short walk home and vowing to return soon.

Framar Natural Health Clinic NUTRITIONAL THERAPIST, SARAH TRIMBLE, ADVISES PACKING A FEW NATURAL REMEDIES IN YOUR SUITCASE TO ENSURE THAT YOUR LONG-AWAITED HOLIDAY ISN’T RUINED BY THOSE COMMON HOLIDAY MALADIES SUCH AS SUNBURN AND DODGY TUMMIES. Sunscreen Sunscreen is probably top of everyone’s holiday essentials list, and natural skincare brands such as Green People and Lavera produce sun creams formulated with mineralbased rather than chemical sunscreens and, therefore may be ideal for more sensitive skin types, especially those who suffer from prickly heat. While we all want to protect our skin from the potentially damaging effects of the sun, religiously applying a high factor sunscreen can actually prevent us from enjoying a major BENEFIT of sun exposure: vitamin D production. Going for a short walk outside (for about 10-15 minutes) before applying sunscreen can ensure that you top up your vitamin D levels while still enjoying the sun safely.

your after-sun before applying to the skin offers immediate cooling relief to sun-scorched skin while speeding up healing time. Lavender oil can also be dabbed onto mosquito bites to reduce itch and promote healing. Vitamin B1 If mosquito attacks have ruined your holiday in the past try taking a capsule of vitamin B1 (between 50-100mg daily) for a few days before departing and while on holiday. This

Suffering from an upset tummy on holiday is unfortunately something that all of us have experienced at one point or another, but can be easily avoided by taking a probiotic capsule before leaving and while away. These capsules contain billions of ‘good’ bacteria that can stop the ‘bad’ bacteria causing upset tummies, Optibac probiotics ‘For Travelling Abroad’ is specifically formulated to prevent traveller’s tummy.

Thinking of packing a box of tea? Why not swap your usual black tea for some dandelion tea, a great natural remedy for those of us who find our ankles and fingers swell in hot weather. Dandelion is a natural diuretic and drinking about two cups a day can help prevent puffy ankles and fingers.

Even with the best intentions and liberal application of sunscreen, sunburn can happen to us all. So pop a bottle of essential oil of lavender into your suitcase, it’s a great natural sunburn remedy and mixing a few drops into

Raising the Bar Local ladies from Taughmonagh have raised a phenomenal £12,000 for local charity, Friends of the Cancer Centre.

Members of the Taughmonagh Calendar Girls are pictured with Claire Hogarth from Friends of the Cancer Centre

Over 30 local ladies became a fundraising force when they came together with the aim of raising £10,000 to support Friends of the Cancer Centre and its life-changing work. To hit their target, some brave ladies dared to bare for a cheeky charity calendar for 2014. The calendar was kindly produced with the help of local photographer, Kelly McCambley and makeup artist, Carrie Marley, who each donated their expert knowledge and time to bring the calendar to life. The calendar was kindly designed and printed thanks to the generous support from local businesses in the area. Not only that, but the group also organised a night of entertainment at Taughmonagh Social Club. Claire Hogarth, Events and Community Fundraising Manager at Friends of the Cancer Centre, said: “The Calendar Girls

are a real inspiration as they have used their own experiences to help raise much needed funds for cancer patients and their families. They set an ambitious target of £10,000, but with determination and a lot of hard work they have outdone themselves by raising an amazing £12,000 for the

charity. We can’t thank them enough for their support.” For further information on Friends of the Cancer Centre, including details of how you can help raise vital funds for cancer patients and their families across Northern Ireland, please visit www.friendsofthecancercentre.com

Commenting on the success of the event, Seamus Doyle from Phoenix Cycle Club, said: “Our Grand Italian Fundraiser was a massive success and while we hoped that we would raise a lot of money for Friends of the Cancer Centre, our final total exceeded all expectations.

“On behalf of Phoenix Cycle Club, I would like to say a very big thank you to everyone who took part in the sportive and helped make it such a great event.”

Friends of the Cancer Centre is Northern Ireland’s leading cancer charity based at the heart of the Cancer Centre, Belfast City Hospital. Thecharity relies entirely on donations, and all money raised goes towards providing and funding key services and vital projects that have a real and lasting impact on patients and their families. Events and Community Fundraising Manager for Friends of the Cancer Centre, Claire Hogarth, said: “The Phoenix Cycle Club’s Grand Italian Fundraiser was a great day and we are

delighted that the event raised such an extraordinary sum for Friends of the Cancer Centre. Bowled Over

BELFAST BOWLING CLUB AT DERAMORE PARK IS THE OLDEST IN IRELAND, WE LOOK BACK IT ITS HISTORY AND TOWARDS ITS FUTURE The game of bowls has always been popular and frequent mention is made of the game in old documents describing it as “a game of billiards on a natural billiard table and one of the most delightful and healthiest of exercises free of the risks attending some other outdoor games. Probably the most widely known game of bowls is that allegedly played by Sir Francis Drake on Plymouth Ho in 1588 while he waited for the tide to turn before seeing off the Spanish Armada. Belfast Bowling Club is not quite as old as that but it is the oldest bowling club in Ireland. The original Club was formed in 1842 occupying a ground at the corner of Nelson Street and Henry Street. Between 1843 and 1873 the club had to move premises five times, settling in College Park East where it remained for almost 130 years before moving to the present ground in south Belfast at Deramore Park in 2001. The club has had a major influence in the development of bowling in Ireland. It was instrumental in setting up the “home internationals” with England, Scotland and Wales at a

meeting in 1903, where England was represented by the famous cricketer Dr W G Grace.

one end often extolling their next player to ‘smash the opponents’ bowls out of contention!’

In recent times the game is wrongly described as an ‘old man’s sport’ probably based on the picturesque sight of players wearing their ‘whites’, with hair colour to match, set against a background of close-cropped green grass.

While undoubtedly providing healthy and enjoyable exercise for people of all ages, the game of bowls also requires skill. Each bowling bowl is weighted (biased) so that it travels in a curved trajectory towards the jack (a small white bowl which forms the target). The player needs to marry the weight of his or her bowl and its bias with the distance of the jack and the characteristics of the green in order to try to deliver the bowl as near as possible to the jack. Like all sports, it’s frustrating when your attempt fails but exhilarating when it succeeds.

If, as you drive past the bowling club, you were able to hear as well as see the action, all may not be as tranquil as it may appear - with huddles of players at

The sport is governed by the Irish Bowling Association. There are currently over 100 clubs who play in various league and cup competitions under the auspices of IBA Belfast Bowling Club participates in three league competitions. In the senior league teams comprise sixteen players played on Saturday afternoons in Division 3. In Midweek teams comprise sixteen players and Belfast plays in Division 2 on Wednesday evenings. In the Veterans league teams comprise eight players Belfast fields three teams on Monday afternoons Lady members compete in the Junior Cup on Thursday afternoons and also in the Hazel Getty Cup. In addition to the leagues there is a number of cup competitions throughout the whole of Ireland. There are also mixed and “friendly” matches where the competition is not so fierce. Belfast has recently competed as far afield as Cork, Letterkenny and Dublin Belfast Bowling Club is based in the Harlequins sports complex at Deramore 66 South BelfastLife

Park. We have six rinks with floodlighting and share a safe and spacious car park with a large clubroom and kitchen. A major advantage over previous locations is that the current arrangement allows us to share facilities with Belfast Harlequins club and to mix with members playing other sports there. In addition there is excellent catering provision, direct access to Harlequins bar allowing us to run a series of Social activities such as bingo evenings, lunches, musical evenings and quizzes.

Numbers have remained very constant over the past five years or so. There are fifty four in the Men’s section and half that number in the Ladies’ Section. As might be expected most members come from Belfast. This year the club has embarked on a major review. Like all institutions which are long in the tooth it operates under a constitution which has evolved piecemeal over the years. The Development Committee has been charged with the task of revising its constitution with the aims of increasing interest in the sport and broadening its appeal.

Like all sports, it’s frustrating when your attempt fails but exhilarating when it succeeds.

There are very few sports where a team can consist of mixed male and female 11 year olds and octogenarians, all of whom can contribute equally to the success of a game. The club intends to consult widely with church and other community groups, and particularly with schools in its neighbourhood. MUSIC LOVERS This summer Tennent’s Vital returns to south Belfast at Boucher Playing Fields. On Thursday 21st August The Killers and special guests Bastille will take to the stage and on Sunday 24th August it will be the turn of superstar DJ David Guetta to entertain the masses. One of the biggest bands in the world, The Killers have sold over 20 million albums, headlined festivals across the globe, performed at the White House and amassed countless prestigious accolades including BRIT, NME and MTV Awards. Their epic, synth-driven rock ‘n’ roll and incredible energy make them one of the greatest live acts on the planet, and their highly anticipated return to Tennent’s Vital (they last played in 2007) is sure to be the hottest ticket of the summer. www.ticketmaster.ie

VISIT South Belfast is full of special hidden gems and a new interactive tour guide will give locals and visitors alike the opportunity to explore the area. The new inner south Belfast iTour is the latest addition to a portfolio of such products, developed by Belfast Visitor and Convention Bureau in association with Belfast City Council. Among the attractions highlighted are the recently restored St Malachy’s Church and ‘Alec the Duck’ in the Markets, An Droichead and the historic Hatfield House bar in the lower Ormeau, Mary Ann McCracken’s house and the Chinese restaurants on Donegall Pass, the Empire Music Hall at the bottom of Botanic Avenue, and the Fairy Tree Gardenl. The iTour can be downloaded from www.gotobelfast.com or www.belfastitours.com to a variety of mobile devices, including MP4s. Visitors can also hire preloaded MP4 players or purchase micro-SD cards with the tour content on them, from the Belfast Welcome Centre at Donegall Place.

EAT Exploring the Ulster Museum can be hungry work, especially during the (hopefully) warm summer. Girona Restaurant at the Ulster Museum offers the perfect opportunity to take a moment to enjoy stunning views over Botanic Gardens and relax in the comfortable cafe and restaurant area. Committed to serving only the very best of local ingredients the Girona Restaurant’s menu changes with the seasons, so for the summer expect to see classic Caesar salad and spaghetti carbonara among many other dishes. www.nmni.com
