A Night at Shelley Lowry Talent represents the freshest talent that the island of Ireland has to offer. This includes the fabulously talented Seamus O’Hara and James Martin, stars of the Oscarwinning ‘An Irish Goodbye’. ‘An Irish Goodbye’ is a beautiful film that has captured the hearts of not only everyone in the Northern Ireland and the UK, but the rest of the world too. Shelley Lowry recounts her experience of the trip to Hollywood to attend the prestigious Academy Awards. “I accompanied my clients Seamus O’Hara and James Martin to Los Angeles for the 95th Academy Awards. We had a wonderful week, meeting some of the most influential people in Hollywood.”
James pictured with David Bradley.
As one of the most glamorous events in the showbiz calendar, they made the most of getting dressed for the occasion. “James Martin’s mum, Suzanne, wore a stunning outfit by Una Rodden, while I wore a cool and contemporary two-piece by Sara O’Neill, so we were representing local designers. Of course, James cut a dash in his leopard print jacket.” Shelley and her team were mingling with some of Hollywood’s finest and attending exclusive parties and events.

the Oscars “After the Oscar ceremony we were invited by Tom Berkeley and Ross White to be their guests at The Vanity Fair Party – a truly spectacular event with wall-to-wall A-list celebrities. We met a number of huge names such as Austin Butler, James Corden, David Bradley, Malala Yousafzai and Marisa Tumei.” “Our trip was very successful. Our aim was to secure US management for Seamus O’Hara, and we achieved that. James Martin is also the first person with Down Syndrome to ever appear in an Oscar award-winning film. As a result of this James will enter the Guinness World Book of Records!” “It’s my dream to continue introducing our incredibly talented actors to US management, building on my Oscar visits over the past two years. (I was a guest of the producers of the movie ‘Belfast’ last year). The goal is to represent Northern Ireland in the best way possible!”
Shelley met singer Charli XCX.
We met a number of huge names including: Megan Fox, James Corden, Austin Butler, Malala, Ellie Goulding, Alan Cumming, David Bradley etc other guests included Naomi Campbell, Sigourney Weaver, Cate Blanchett.

DEPUTY EDITOR: Joanne Harkness EDITORIAL MANAGER: James Sherry
Wow! Three – yes, that’s three – Irish films were nominated for Oscars at this year’s Academy Awards. I must confess that I haven’t yet managed to see Martin McDonagh’s film, The Banshees of Inisherin; however, I have seen A Quiet Girl and An Irish Goodbye. I saw A Quiet Girl in a soldout Queen’s Film Theatre a few weeks ago. It’s a deeply moving and very affecting film that really manages to capture rural Ireland in the early 1980s. An Irish Goodbye is only 23 minutes long and is available to watch, free of charge, on the BBC’s iPlayer. It’s a really enjoyable black comedy which was filmed entirely in Northern Ireland and, as you will have heard, it picked up an Oscar in the Short Film category. Portadown-based acting coach – and friend to the Ulster Tatler – Shelley Lowry was in LA with the cast. While she was there, we asked her to keep a diary of her trip. Turn to page 12-13 where we have the inside story on a very successful trip all round.

LIFE & TIMES EDITED BY KATHY CLUGSTON
Kathy Clugston is a freelance radio presenter. She chairs the long-running BBC Radio 4 programme ‘Gardeners’ Question Time’ and presents the weekly entertainment show ‘The Ticket’ on BBC Radio Ulster.
Phantoms of the Road This month, Kathy discusses the possibility of seeing driverless vehicles on our roads in the not-so-distant future.
I read somewhere recently that Northern Ireland is to get its first self-driving shuttle bus next year. It will transport travellers in Belfast between the Titanic Quarter and Queen’s Island, sixteen brave souls at a time. I can’t get excited about this, no more than I can about driverless cars. Call me oldfashioned but I like being in a vehicle with a human in charge, even though people are far more accident-prone than microchips and even though I have more than once been in a car with my myopic neighbour Steve, for whom third gear is unknown and terrifying territory, and barely survived the stress of it. Once after a late shift in London my taxi driver nodded off and crashed into a bollard; neither of us was hurt on that occasion but similar things happened to colleagues, some of whom sustained serious injuries. A microchip may not be an idiot but until all vehicles on the road are driving themselves microchips will be surrounded by idiots and I’m not convinced they can cope. There has been talk about driverless cars for about as long as I can remember, but their history goes back much further, to the 1920s, when so-called ‘phantom autos’ were operated by remote-control and used to demonstrate aspects of road safety. The quest for totally autonomous cars continued over the decades and by the mid-2010s some of the world’s biggest carmakers, such as Ford, BMW and Volkswagen, had come on board. The last few years, though, have been rocky. A few months ago Tesla stopped the rollout of its self-driving software to sort out a glitch that could potentially cause cars to crash. Uber took its autonomous cars off the road in
2018 when a pedestrian was killed and later sold off most of its driverless car division, but it’s now back in the game with a new partner company and plans for shiny new ‘robotaxis’ to be cruising the streets of Las Vegas by the end of the year. The Chinese firm AutoX already has a fleet of more than a thousand driverless cabs operating within designated zones in Shenzhen and other cities. Driver-free is definitely the direction of travel, although most commentators think it will be many years before we’re replacing our hatchbacks with KITT-style* robocars (*a reference to the TV programme Knight Rider, for those who don’t remember the 80s). Trillions of pounds have and will be invested, but I wonder if it’s really the best focus for the superbrains of scientists and engineers. There are obvious benefits for people who are unable to drive because of illness or disability, but will ceding the driving seat to computers benefit society as a whole? Fewer fatalities would obviously be a huge plus but let’s not forget that computers can be hacked with potentially disastrous consequences. I suppose that not having to drive ourselves would free up time - small pockets of time we could spend watching more TV on a tiny screen or scrolling mindlessly through our phones. Great. No one seems to be quite sure whether this autonomous takeover will mean a net loss or gain in employment. There’ll be new opportunities in technology but think of all the driving jobs that will disappear: deliveries, rubbish collection, public transport, maybe even some emergency services. Soon, with our robo-taxis, selfcheckouts, online banking and touchscreen ticketing we’ll be able to get through a
whole day without having to interact with a single person - not so good for our loneliness epidemic but at least there’ll be no more arguing with cabbies about Brexit. A big minus though will be losing the need and ability to drive. It’s such a great, freeing skill to have, requiring hand-eye coordination, concentration, patience, decision making and creative hand gesturing. With any luck, by the time robocars have become as common as Renaults, I’ll be well past driving age and happily seated aboard my driverless shuttle bus playing online bridge with my chatbot.
THIS MONTH’S OBSESSIONS: As I Remember It/ Year 98 – Two podcasts from Newstalk and BBC NI respectively about the Good Friday Agreement, which is 25 years old this April. The Truth & Other Stories – Co. Down singersongwriter Brigid O’Neill’s recently released third album was recorded in Nashville and has country, folk and jazz influences. ‘Easy’- the first single - is sublime.

BBC PRESENTER RECEIVES MBE FROM KING While some were receiving chocolates and flowers on Valentine’s Day, BBC Radio Ulster presenter Richard Yarr was being decorated at Windsor Castle for his Services to Music in Northern Ireland. a couple of lighter moments too. His parting words were of encouragement, to build on my achievements and to keep making a difference. Something I fully intend to do.” Richard celebrated the Honour with a private concert in Belfast to acknowledge those who’ve been part of his journey. It was introduced by the Very Rev Eugene O’Hagan, and featured other friends from the music world, including pianist Ruth McGinley, singer Jenny Bourke and harpist Tanya Houghton. It was dedicated to his close friend and BBC colleague Kim Lenaghan, who passed away suddenly in September last year, and rounded off with cake and prosecco.
Richard (49) has received many other prestigious awards, including the Freedom of the City of London in 2019, but receiving the MBE was extra special. He said:
“The experience was full of moments where I really had to pinch myself.” “The experience was full of moments where I really had to pinch myself. It’s a wonderful award and it’s given me the opportunity to say thank you to my mammoth support network. INTERVIEW

Jane Hardy is a feature writer who has interviewed a few of the big names from Arlene Foster to Mrs Thatcher.
EDITED BY JANE HARDY
TWO INTO ONE CAN GO
Jane Hardy catches up with Cate Conway and Vinny Hurrell as they prepare to take on their new evening show on BBC Radio Ulster.
C
ate Conway and Vinny Hurrell definitely haven’t got the right faces for radio. Yet the toothsome pairing for BBC Radio Ulster’s new early evening show will, I think, make good radio. We meet in the Europa Hotel’s first-floor piano bar. The photographer asks Hurrell to drape himself over the high chair Ms Conway is occupying. He drapes well and their banter suggests they have the right chemistry for the job. The programme airs for the first time on April 24 and is called the Vinny and Cate Show. Not an alphabetical order of names, so why? Vinny: “Good question, I’m not sure and of course, we didn’t have anything to do with the title.” Cate counters with an aside: “It should have been Cate and Vinny of course.” The experienced broadcasters reveal that they first learnt about their new job in March. It was exciting, even a bit overwhelming. Ms Conway (47) says she was tearful at the news. “I had a cry, I was so happy.” Mr Hurrell (40) says coolly he was very pleased and phoned close family. “We weren’t allowed to tell anyone, but Cate’s answer is better. I should have said I cried!” What both radio stars have done is practise and do quite a bit of prep. Asked what they might focus on the day we meet, which is when Paul O’Grady’s death was announced, Vinny says that although their show follows Evening Extra and a slice of news analysis, that they would pay tribute. “We’d have something on Paul O’Grady, his popularity and so on, also Lily Savage.” Hurrell recalls his own drag experience when, as part of a show, he had to dress up as Mrs Claus. “I wore the full outfit, a white wig and high heels.” Asked whether he felt different, Vinny Hurrell says “no” with a laugh.
They have been preparing interviews for the new show, including one with Aston Merrygold of JLS. Conway is a big fan and says it was uber-exciting to interview him. “My friends even gave me a bag with his image on.” Sadly, this was a Zoom encounter so Merrygold couldn’t sign it. But the experience was clearly fun. The Vinny and Cate team, who do have chemistry, managed to do a joint inquisition successfully. Hurrell explains: “We asked him not just about the music, but about being a dad as he now has children. So he’s doing those things and has moved from popstar to father.” Both are seasoned media hands. Hurrell has interviewed not a few celebrities in his career, which includes several years producing the Nolan Show. He says seriously that you won’t learn more from any media figure than from Stephen Nolan. But it was another star journalist who made Vinny Hurrell quake a bit in his interviewing shoes. “Michael Parkinson, who is so good. I can’t remember what I asked him but he was nice.” Also Mariah Carey whom Vinny Hurrell clearly admires. “Well, because she’s Mariah Carey…” The aim of this early-evening exercise in broadcast banter is to relax, entertain and allow people to ease from daytime to what the French call l’heure bleue. Ms Conway says they’re hoping for a relaxed vibe. The c-word will no doubt be involved and you could dub Vinny and Cate craic-heads. They’re amused by this but Vinny Hurrell adds: “Don’t make that the headline, it’s not a very BBC term.” Rumour has it that ‘beleaguered Auntie’ might be about to cut back on regional coverage, with up to fifty per cent of the BBC Northern Ireland output at risk. Hurrell looks serious and
61
INTERVIEW
comments: “This may be a corporate answer but even with financial issues, I think I am privileged to have this opportunity.” Ms Conway nods her head enthusiastically. Conway and Hurrell’s professional backgrounds differ. She came to the role via marketing and PR and once in radio, Ms Conway was known as the late Stephen Clements’ sidekick on Q Radio. When her dear friend and colleague died in 2020, Cate Conway recorded an emotional tribute to him. She says now: “People were surprised, but Stephen was very shy. He’d be quiet and when fans met him, they’d ask me if he was ok. He was just reserved and shy. But on air, and items like ‘Through the Window’ weren’t scripted, he’d come out with material spontaneously.” In her immortal phrase, Clements’ brain worked “like popcorn in the microwave”. The new show follows Evening Extra and the presenters say that although they won’t shy away from big stories, news analysis is not the priority. “Sometimes you want a bit of escapism,” notes Mr Hurrell. In terms of music, the show will share the presenters’ catholic tastes. Hurrell, who says interviewing Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden was pretty hairy, likes sounds from ‘90s stalwarts including Oasis to The Eagles. “My father used to always play them, but I like them too.” The best on-air and on-screen partnerships are based on friendship, bits of banter and an easy manner. We run through some great broadcasting heroes of the pair. Hurrell suggests Graham Norton and we all agree Eamon Holmes is genuine easy listening and viewing. You could partner him with anyone and it would work, but Vinny Hurrell says, “It works best with his wife Ruth Landsford.” Maybe because of their domestic banter which can be slightly saucy. Hurrell raises an eyebrow at this. Hurrell
62
and Conway have the easy manner in spades, not the domestic background of course, but have been mates for a while. As they say, they will try not to talk over each other, but a certain amount of giggling is assured. Finally, what of the future of radio in the rapidly moving, multiplatformed media universe? Vinny Hurrell says it will survive as it is “personal”. Conway puts the merits of their easy listening well: “It should be like being at a bar or café, talking to a friend.” With their new high profile, Cate Conway and Vinny Hurrell will get recognised even more than they are now. That’s no problem, although Conway recalls a fan approaching her when she was in mid-row with her ex. “She said ‘Are you Cate Conway?’; I said ‘Yes’, but it wasn’t exactly the right moment!” Then it’s onto the life away from the mic. Ms Conway is a cat person; she used to own two Burmese, now has two Persian moggies named, interestingly, Mindy and Dusty. A divorcee, she enjoys eating out at places such as Bullitt and Common Market. Mr Hurrell is a dog man, owns two – Bear (poodle) and Winnie (mixed breed) – and is devoted to them. “But I also have two children, Madison and Sophie, aged seven and nine. They don’t listen to me a lot and only get excited if I interview somebody they’ve heard of like Gabrielle. As for eating out I only go to McDonalds with the kids, that’s as good as it gets.” As the Europa bar fills up with business people, the Vinny and Cate bandwagon plans to move on post-interview. They talk about going for a second coffee together. This new show looks as if it has legs. The Vinny and Cate Show runs on Monday to Thursday 6-7.30pm on BBC Radio Ulster and BBC Sounds

Oscar Celebrations
Oscar Win for Irish Designer
What a time for celebrating world-class wins for this island of Ireland! Not so much the luck of the Irish rather than sheer talent shining through. Last month saw the Northern Ireland film, An Irish Goodbye, steal the show at the Oscars, winning Best Live-Action Short Film at the 95th Annual Academy Awards Ceremony. The film, shot entirely in Northern Ireland, stars actors James Martin, Seamus O’Hara, Paddy Jenkins and Michelle Fairley. Shot on location in Derry, Templepatrick and Saintfield, the dark comedy, set on a farm, has already won best British short film at the Baftas. Leading actor James Martin and director Ross White are both from Belfast, with the cast also including Seamus O’Hara from Newry, and Game of Thrones star Michelle Fairley from Coleraine. Celebrating his 31st birthday, actor James Martin was serenaded on stage by co-directors Ross White and Tom Berkeley as the film picked up the Oscar. The actor is the first person with Down’s syndrome to win an Oscar, and is Ambassador for Mencap Northern Ireland.
It was a double win at this year’s glittering Oscars awards ceremony as Portrush designer, Sara O’Neill of Éadach had not one, but four of her creations on the red carpet. Flying the flag in Sara’s designs was An Irish Goodbye, director Ross White, lead actor Seamus O’Hara, casting director Mary-Ellen O’Hara, and talent agent Shelley Lowry, stealing best dressed on the red carpet. The brand-new pieces from the Children of Lir and Róisín Dubh collections are inspired by Irish mythology, history, and the landscape. Go to www.eadach.com

Rebecca is founder and Director of Physiotherapy at Apex Clinic and Apex Headache Clinic.
Are Headaches or Migraines Destroying Your Life? This month, Rebecca explains why getting to the source of the problem, rather than taking painkillers, is always the best solution to curing headaches and migraines.
Are headaches or migraines destroying your life? Apex Headache Clinic, Belfast, is Ireland’s first drug free headache and migraine clinic, and has been clearing headaches and migraines for over 20 years. An experienced team of specialist physiotherapists is led by clinic founder and Spinal & Headache Physiotherapy Specialist, Rebecca Nelson. Her unique approach of treating and clearing headaches/migraines, called The Nelson Headache Approach™, is offered in no other clinic and its high success rate explains why people travel from all over the UK and Ireland for this treatment. Headaches ruin lives At Apex Headache Clinic we see patients daily whose lives have
The Nelson Headache Approach™ Inspired by my experience of treating headaches in New Zealand and later the UK, I designed my own regime for treating headaches and migraines, called The Nelson Headache Approach™. My specialist regime of manual physiotherapy treatment for headaches and migraines has been successfully used in patients of all ages, from children to elderly folk. All our highly specialist physiotherapists have been extensively trained in this approach by myself and we have a very high success rate in curing persistent, longstanding headaches and migraines. The Nelson Headache Approach™ is a unique treatment regime, which is not offered in any other clinic in the UK or Ireland.
been destroyed by headaches or migraines, leaving them desperate to find a cure for their pain. In the UK alone, a staggering 10 million people suffer from daily or frequent headaches. Many people blame tension or stress for their headaches and so they reach for painkillers which offer them no long-lasting relief. What many people are unaware of, is that there is often a physical cause for their headaches stemming from their upper neck, even when the person may experience no neck pain at all. Poor posture or hours spent slumped over desks and computers commonly cause persistent neck-triggered headaches or migraines, as can repeated lifting or a previous neck injury. Headaches and migraines can stem from your neck While spending the early part of my career in New Zealand, over 25 years ago, I sought treatment for my own migraines, which were diagnosed as stemming from my neck. I had no idea that my neck was involved, and this treatment was life changing for me. I’ve had no headaches or migraines ever since. When I returned to Northern Ireland, I later launched Apex Headache Clinic with the sole aim of providing a cure to other migraine and headache sufferers like myself.
Get your life back on track and say goodbye to your headaches 39-year-old Gemma Hunter, from Belfast, attended Apex Headache Clinic after suffering a severe migraine episode which left her unable to get out of bed for four weeks and led to her having to take three months off work. After completing her course of treatment Gemma said, “I didn’t realise I had a physical problem with my neck until I went for treatment at Apex Headache Clinic and during the initial consultation, I
apex
was told that my migraines and vertigo were stemming from my neck as opposed to stress, as I had thought. I had been having a burning sensation from my shoulder, up my neck and into my head. It was so worrying for me because I didn’t know why this pain came on, I knew I hadn’t hurt myself. My specialist physio was able to find the source of this pain and over the course of my treatment this pain became less and less. My treatment sessions were frequent at the beginning and then were spaced out to once a month for maintenance. I have been able to go back to work fully and function again on a daily basis. I have had such great improvement and I haven’t had a migraine in three months now. It’s amazing!” Treat pain at its source If you suffer from persistent headaches or migraines it is important to get to the source of the problem. Book an initial assessment and treatment today with one of our Specialist Headache Physiotherapists and Apex Headache Clinic could clear your headaches and migraines, allowing you to enjoy life again. To book an appointment call Apex Headache Clinic, Belfast on 028 9048 4153. No GP referral is necessary.

“Apex Headache Clinic gave me my life back.” 28-year-old Jenna McHugh from Ballymena was suffering with headaches which affected every aspect of her daily life. When she couldn’t get any relief from her pain, she decided to make an appointment at Apex Headache Clinic, in the hope of getting to the source of the problem. Here, she shares how the clinic’s unique regime of specialist manual physiotherapy treatment for migraines and headaches, called The Nelson Headache Approach™, treated her headaches, meaning that she could finally start to enjoy life again.
Jenna, when did your headaches begin? In December 2021 I had my little girl and then two weeks later I took Covid. A few weeks after that, I started taking severe headaches and I was floored with them. The pain would start in my shoulders and neck and then travel up the left side of my head. I had pain in the whole left side of my head and face including my eye and into my jaw. The pain was so severe, I even had
numbness in the left side of my face and pain in my left arm. When this happened, I thought I was having a stroke. I had been to my GP and I had tests and scans which were all clear. I also went privately for a brain MRI scan to rule out anything more sinister and was referred to a Consultant Neurologist. How did the pain affect your life? The pain took away my quality of life. As a new mum I was devasted and had to spend time in bed when a headache attack would hit. I would have to lie down until the headache eased and I couldn’t do anything. I had constant pain everyday and then suffered around four severe headache episodes per week. If I was out with friends or family and I took a headache I would just have to go home because along with the pain, I got dizziness which was unbearable. How has your life changed since having treatment? I don’t have to worry about my headaches anymore. As I progressed with my course of treatment with my specialist physiotherapist the pain got less and I now have whole days where I have no pain at all which is amazing. I am headache-free 80% of the time which is such a difference to when I first started physiotherapy treatment at Apex Headache Clinic and my quality of life has been fully restored.
What led you to Apex Headache Clinic? My headaches just kept getting worse and worse. I tried different medications and painkillers but they didn’t help my pain and I felt like I might as well take sweets. At that point I came across a post on Facebook about Apex Headache Clinic and how they had helped someone who sounded just like me. I then made an appointment for an initial assessment in September 2022.
apex
What advice would you offer someone suffering from headaches? I would definitely say go to Apex Headache Clinic sooner than what I did. I am so glad that I gave it a go because it has given me my life back!

ASK THE EXPERT
The Modern Bride
Ulster Tatler speaks to makeup artist Bliain Fitzpatrick to get advice on all things bridal.
How has bridal makeup evolved over recent years? I think it’s fair to say bridal makeup has gone on a journey over recent years. We would have originally witnessed quite a traditional “no makeup” makeup, with brides opting for a look that was timeless and discreet, with a classic palette of blush and soft pastels. Thanks to the boom in celebrity culture bridal looks moved on to fuller, more obvious makeup looks that encouraged statement bold lips and strong carved brows – not forgetting full and pigmented body tans. Now we see a slight nod to the classic bride with softer colour choices, whilst maintaining strong features and definition and of course lashes. How has social media played a role in bridal makeup trends? Social media is a huge trend contributor in all aspects of life, whether we like that fact or not. That reality is no different when it comes to a bride’s big day, especially where makeup and styling are concerned. There are huge social media influencers within the makeup world such as Lisa Eldridge and Hindash, to name but a few, that offer specific tutorials on bridal looks and key products that brides-to-be take as gospel. A bride will then take this information to her chosen makeup artist to find a tailored bespoke solution for her big day. Would you recommend a bride comes to you with a reference photo? Absolutely, this can be really helpful especially if a client struggles to communicate what she would love versus what she would hate to look like. A reference image is a great way to pick out the elements she loves from the makeup and apply
aspects of that to her own look. It’s important to be realistic, however, as many clients may love the look of a celebrity or image and simply want to look like them even though their features may have little in common. The artist’s job is to help dissect what a client loves from the image and find a way to offer those elements in the final look. What are the do’s and don’ts for looking for bridal makeup inspiration? Being inspired is so important when it comes to a wedding day so my advice is to really go for it with all of the inspiration you can find: look through magazines, flower stands, fashion shows, beauty halls etc. Inspiration is going to look different to each of us, but I would say just be realistic with your beauty look. Choose inspiration that you can relate to your features, the theme of your day, colour choices etc. Trust in your makeup artist is a massive DO, you must take your time to find the right artist that will combine your inspiration with their vision. DON’T stretch too far out of your comfort zone, you want to feel at ease on your big day whilst feeling dressed up so it can be a fine balance to get right. A bride can feel a lot of pressure to look her best on her big day, how do you manage her expectations? It is so understandable for a bride to feel pressure with all she has going on, that’s why I advise a trial as early as possible so that a relationship can be built on the lead up to the wedding day. This will put the bride at ease and offers her the opportunity to constantly bounce ideas, inspiration or any changes right up to the wedding morning. Expectations are also put in place regarding timing on the day as mornings
can be intense and super busy so setting in place a firm structure of what’s happening, and when, can alleviate any further pressures or worries. We have seen a lot of celebrity weddings over the past year, have any stood out to you in terms of makeup? YES! However in this instance the bride wasn’t the show stealer. Brooklyn Beckham’s wedding day, as beautiful as his bride was (and she was) the makeup and fashion moment was Victoria Beckham, hands down! Her signature smokey shimmered eye and nude glossy lip matched with that infamous shimmery slip dress was ICONIC and definitely sits on my inspiration folder. Just gorgeous. The modern bride is constantly being captured on camera, how do you get flawless, camera-ready makeup to last all day long? PREP, PREP, PREP. This is why setting the right amount of time on a wedding morning is crucial. The bride needs time for her skin to be well prepared and set before makeup is applied. Getting the skin routine correct on the run-up to the wedding is a crucial step that should not be overlooked and is vital in how well the makeup will look and last. Product wise, I reach for products that suit the needs of the client’s skin: long-wear foundations, concealers and powders are top of the list and some good shine-control products should keep the base fresh and in place for the duration of the day. I always give my client the lipstick I use so that the lips can be well matched and maintained all day, especially for photo opportunities. Don’t forget a good quality waterproof mascara too, a panda-eyed bride is not the way forward.

1. What do you love most about your job? This is a family business and I really enjoy the flexibility that comes with working for yourself, although it does mean working more hours than you would in a typical 9-5 job! I love having the freedom to attend school events and work around our three kids. I also relish the creative aspects, be it decorating our deli in Moira, running our social media platforms or making graze boards. Of course, it’s also fabulous to meet our customers and chat about our products at the tasting events that we run. 2. What has been your career highlight to date? We were recently asked to cater for a wedding and I really enjoyed the process of working closely with the bride to design a graze table. Besides working for Ispini Charcuterie, I am also a trained nurse, so there have been many times that I’ve had the privilege of caring for people when at their most vulnerable. 3. What are your favourite hobbies/ activities outside of work? I love being outside, whatever the weather. We recently got a puppy so I have the perfect excuse to get the kids out for a walk. 4. What is your daily routine? I try to get up at 5.30am three days a week and go to the gym. I’m home for breakfast by 7am to get the kids fed, clothed and out the door to school. After this, I’ll likely head out to our food production unit, where the day is spent making charcuterie. If not at the unit, I’ll head to our deli. In the evening, we’ll make tea and then drop the kids off to some of the many clubs that they’re involved in and I’ll do my best to get to bed for 10pm. 5. Do you have a specific fitness regime? I really enjoy exercise - more for the endorphins than anything else. I attend a bootcamp three mornings a week and am trying to get back into running at the moment. 6. Do you have any tips for staying positive? I always find that getting outside and into the fresh air lifts the mood. Luckily, we have the beautiful Royal Hillsborough and Moira on our doorstep to explore. 7. What do you think is the best thing about living in Northern Ireland? Hard to pick only one! Besides our proximity to so many fantastic areas, it would have to be the food - it’s difficult to beat the

abundance of good quality local produce that we have here. It is an incredible collaboration that has allowed us to showcase beautiful rural locations that are steeped in history and offer a tourist experience like no other. 8. What is your mantra or favourite quote that you live by? It would be a bible verse – “Pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances.” 9. Who has been your biggest influence? All four of my grandparents, who sadly are no longer alive. Each very different and unique, but loving. 92

Something For Everyone
Ulster Tatler’s Rebecca Parker visits Bengal Brasserie, Belfast. Indian food is a firm favourite for me and my partner but living in the heart of the Mourne Mountains, an Indian restaurant is hard to come by. Therefore, when we were offered the opportunity to try Bengal Brasserie in Belfast, we absolutely jumped at the chance. We booked into the restaurant on a Friday evening which was a lovely way to finish the working week and begin a relaxing weekend. Located on the Lisburn Road, there was a real buzz as everyone headed out after work. As soon as we entered the restaurant the aroma of the
to go for. However, as I am usually a creature of habit, I decided this time I would step out of my comfort zone. When our waiter came to take our order, I asked what his recommended dish would be and he assured me he had the perfect dish for me. Once our order had been taken, the waiter brought down a basket of the best poppadoms we have ever had along with a medley of different dips and salsa. I thought this was a really nice touch to their service. Our mixed vegetable starter soon followed, which was perfect for sharing between two and trying a mixture of different traditional Indian specialities. It consisted of an assortment of vegetable samosa, vegetable pakora and onion bhaji. Everything absolutely oozed flavour, with a mixture of spices coming through. My personal favourite was the vegetable pakora and I was slightly disappointed my fiancé and I had decided to share as I wouldn’t have minded taking his, too. This made us even more excited about our main courses. For our mains I ordered a mild Murg Methi Mali which is their chef’s speciality dish. It consisted of barbecued chicken cooked in
different spices drifted down the stairs, making our mouths water. The restaurant is beautifully designed with its open-plan layout and natural lighting which create a really chilled and relaxed atmosphere. The friendly staff immediately greeted us at the door and led us to a table by the window which looked out over the hustle and bustle of the street below. As we had been looking forward to our meal all week, we had already had a little nosey at the menu online and my partner knew exactly the dish he wanted
98
a beautiful creamy yoghurt and fenugreek sauce which created an explosion of flavour with every bite. My partner, on the other hand, is much braver than me and he opted to go for an extrahot Chicken Madras with pilau rice. Both dishes were absolutely divine. The staff were attentive throughout, filling up our water and ensuring we thoroughly enjoyed our meal. By this stage we were most definitely feeling very full but as a girl with a bit of a sweet tooth I had to try their sticky toffee pudding. Having seen the table beside us with it, I couldn’t not! Although it isn’t a traditional Indian dish it was the perfect way to finish our meal. After our exceptional experience we most definitely will be returning with friends and family as it is the perfect place for a birthday celebration or party. I also noticed they offer take-away if you’re not feeling up to heading out, and have a wide range of vegetarian dishes, meaning there is something for everyone to try. The Ulster Press Golf Society was founded in 1968 by sports journalists from the Belfast newspapers. Over the years this has expanded and now includes journalists of all hues from local TV, radio and newspapers. Currently many faces familiar to the public belong to the Society, with sports reporters being to the fore including Joel Taggart and Ruth Gorman. The 1947 Open champion Fred Daly MBE, was the Honorary President of the Society from shortly after inception, until he passed away in 1990. The 2023 Society Captain is John Dickson of Wasserman Rugby well known in local sports photography with a keen interest in Ulster Rugby. The next event of the season will be at the wonderful and scenic Portstewart Golf Club on April 20th, when those on Portstewart Strand will be well advised to watch the skies! Below is the 2022 winning Ulster Press Golf Society team from the Annual Journalists Inter-Provincial competition. Hobbies don’t come much better than golf, socially it is a fantastic way to meet new people or spend time with friends. Another benefit of golf is that it is an excellent form of exercise, as you clock up your steps and build up core strength from those mighty swings. Joining a golf society is a fantastic way to introduce more golf into your life. Golf societies will enter into competitions, both locally and across seas, which is a great way to play on array of different courses. With the competitive aspect, it will push you to improve your game (and get rewarded for it too, if you practise hard enough). One of the best reasons is the company – you will get to play with like-minded people and make friendships along the way. To find out where to join a golf society, why not contact your local golf clubs, who can point you in the right direction.

he key to a timeless kitchen is to balance a practical space with aesthetic appeal.
One of the best ways to achieve this is with a statement island counter. As well as adding additional work top space and storage possibilities, an island counter is a flexible area where it is possible to explore with colours, materials, patterns and textures to give your kitchen a contemporary feel without overpowering it. Colour is returning to the kitchen with a bang. Blue is very much on trend for 2023. From cobalt to powder blue, this timeless hue is bold and guaranteed to make an impression. If blue is not for you, solid white is the perfect way to make your space seem much bigger while also making a visual impact. 2023 also sees kitchens taking on an industrial look. From concrete effect to patina finishes, this is one way to add a bit of drama to your kitchen whilst also creating a very personalised finish. Lighting is another area of the kitchen that is evolving. 2023 sees two approaches to stylish light fittings: low-hanging lights can become a true centrepiece of your kitchen, whilst concealed and disguised lighting are perfect for those wanting to create a minimalist look. For a while now kitchens have been exuding a sleek appearance; handle-less design will remain a big trend for 2023. Make your kitchen ultra-contemporary by matching a sleek style with a glossy design. If you want to add more personality to your space, however, don’t shy away from
a two-tone style kitchen. For an eye-catching look, contrast wall and floor cabinetry for a unique look. Mix shades and add attention-grabbing splashbacks to complete the look. In 2023 it is very much about the details, consider larder style cabinets for a stylish storage solution. If you don’t have the space for such a feature, invest in display shelves, which are much more flexible but will also give you the space you need to showcase your personality with art, mementos or essential items. 113

Are Boiling Water Taps Safe?
Boiling water taps have grown rapidly in popularity over the past ten years. Something that was originally viewed as an unnecessary luxury item has now become a household essential for millions across the globe. Concerns about safety used to be a significant factor in dissuading people from investing in a boiling water tap, and to this day, one of the most frequently asked questions when renovating a kitchen is ‘is boiling water straight from the tap safe?’. With constant innovation, boiling water taps on the market today are completely safe to use. With user-friendly, in-built safety mechanisms, such as Quooker’s patented double push and twist, that make it virtually impossible to turn on boiling water by accident, they are ideal for families with small children or those with restricted mobility. Furthermore, boiling water taps are static, immovable objects which cannot accidentally be spilled or tipped over. The rotatable spouts also allow users to aim precisely, for example when filling a teapot or a pan, minimising the risk of spills. On the other hand, kettles and pans of water on the hob cause the vast majority of accidents with boiling water, as they can easily tip over. Last but not least, taps dispense boiling water as an aerated flow rather than a solid jet, meaning water feels hot but not scalding to touch, should any accidental contact occur. For more information on Quooker and the safety of boiling water taps, please visit www.quooker.co.uk.

BOOK FOCUS
With a Mother Like Mine This month, author David King writes about his mother Beryl who inspired his debut novel, American Bombshell. David is originally from England but now lives in Kenmare, Co. Kerry.
‘Write what you know’ Mark Twain said, a piece of doubtful advice repeated endlessly to first-time writers since then. With a mother like mine, any account of her life would yield a story rich in human and historical drama, peopled by vivid characters. But the advantage of a ‘shake-and-bake’ novel came with a catch, as I found when I began the manuscript. The drafting raised nuggets, but with them came buried fears and memories of childhood abuse. Mother could be playful, and creative, yet her life journey beyond that in my first book in which she stars, American Bombshell, brewed a temper in her that could transform from a gentle breeze to a Category Five Hurricane. Mum certainly earned her childhood nickname - ‘Beryl the Peril.’ She was, as any man could tell you, ‘a bit of a handful,’ and they didn’t mean her thirty-six inch chest. As my father said: ‘Son, if they’d dropped that woman on Berlin in 1939, there’d have been no war. Any bunch of fools can survive an atom bomb, but no-one survives a Beryl’. As I sat on my bed contemplating a bottle of Aspirin at the age of thirteen, I reflected that he could be right. Repeated up-rootings, including apparently random periods in foster care and children’s homes when she went off on her ‘liaisons,’ leaving me an anxious and confused adolescent. Mums are havens of security. It’s true mine taught me to read by the age of three, but she had multiple personalities daily and you never knew who you’d get. She might start with one of the movie lines she was adept at remembering, like this one by Groucho Marks: ‘This morning I shot an elephant in my pyjamas. How he got into my pyjamas I’ll never know.’ She was funny, yes. Unusual, certainly. But she could turn abruptly into a monster, delivering a slap for no reason and

chucking china further than a shot-putter could throw. Mum’s life story, her orphanage upbringing, a wedding at seventeen to an American flyer and crossing the Atlantic on the Queen Mary, was told in anecdotes. I made discoveries myself, unearthing, a ration book, a Green Card, a pack of Empire State matches and a mink coat. There was an album; packed with gleaming Cadillacs and glittering Hollywood parties where ‘B’ list celebrities posed. There were boys gathered beneath the wings of a B17, and Black and Whites of JFK. It was from these, and my imagination, that the story of a girl jitterbugging, drinking rum and Coca Cola,

experimenting with love, was crafted. Here, before disaster, she’s young and bright, intrigued by everything, full of belief, lit from within by hope. If I was gifted a story riven with drama and surprises (wartime drugs use, and lesbian relationships) the gift came at a cost to everyone touched by mum’s life. In 1962, having modelled in Beverly Hills, and worked on Kennedy’s election campaign, she returned to the UK post-Cuban Missile Crisis. She met my East-Ender father, an ArthurDaleyish man flush with wads of crisp, blue five pound notes, which fell from his pockets like leaves. By then Mum was a troubled soul in her thirties who needed his help. Yet she’d

Mum’s fourth marriage – to my father – ended when I was five. One carefree day I was hoisted onto the counter of our family’s shop to be asked, ‘Who do you want to live

with, your Mum or your Dad?’ Five minutes later a child was walking away, dragging an over-large suitcase beside an incandescent mother. For years we travelled. We stayed in my actor-cum-antiques-dealer uncle’s flat overlooking the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden – a rendezvous for artists, who’d visit accompanied by sweet-smelling smoke, the chink of glasses and often rehearsed plays there. But life wasn’t rosy. We scavenged from tips, and stole veg from the market because without that we’d have gone hungry. Eventually my father found me and funded spells in boarding schools, where despite bullying, there was at least some food and some order. Another marriage followed, to a stepfather-ogre, until this too ended inevitably in divorce. I escaped to college and then university, but it was there that the mental effects of my mother’s odyssey exploded, like a delayed action bomb. I developed acute anxiety, panic attacks and a debilitating OCD. All these were all eclipsed in later life by the sinister grey snake of depression. I’d loved my mother uncritically as a child, but I began to see that the person who had given me my sense of humour and love of books had also wrecked my mind. Occasionally I thought of writing Mum’s story. It was certainly dramatic, from a WW2 romance to a Queen Mary voyage and
127
on to the Hollywood car crash that left her holding the brain of a Cherokee Indian in 1955. But it was not until after her death in 2014 and Brexit two years later that I finally began. Brexit moved me to shift home to Ireland, a country and people I had long been in love with. I found a house in solitude on West Kerry’s rugged coast, and when pandemic benefits kicked in I found for the first time that I had both the situation and the means to write. American Bombshell focusses on the early, bright period of Mum’s life, and while it contains the violence of war, it’s an upbeat tale of character and luck trumping ill-fortune and finding love. Dealing with her later life events was too painful, and for now I’ve kept that door firmly closed. So I admit; the book isn’t just a fictional story. It’s my attempt to understand Mum’s life and her later descent into something like madness. Put simply, it’s an attempt to bringing good from bad. And it’s an effort to find peace. The book itself is, to my critical eye, imperfect, but, as Alvy Singer, Woody Allen’s character in Annie Hall says: ‘What do you want? It was my first play. You know how you’re always trying to get things to come out perfect in art because it’s real difficult in life.’ From my limited experience to date, I would agree.

“The exhibition is mainly about the ideas surrounding narcissism and identity.”

EDITED BY KELLIE BURCH KELLIE@ULSTERTATLER.COM
‘Handful of Notes’ Exhibition Opening ArtisAnn Gallery recently showcased the work of emerging artist, Londonderrybased Aimee Melaugh. Entitled Handful of Notes, the accomplished collection draws upon ideas surrounding identity, suppressed individuality and deceiving appearances. The artist’s work makes use of memento mori whilst depicting the malleable distortion of objects intertwined with desperate figures. At the launch event, Aimee Melaugh, who graduated from the Ulster University Belfast in 2018 with a First Class BA Honours in Fine Art, explained the inspiration behind the exhibition: “The exhibition is mainly about the ideas surrounding narcissism and identity.” A recurring theme throughout the collection is masks. To create the stunning oil paintings, Aimee photographed porcelain Venetian masks before developing the distorted images synonymous with her work in this collection. Each piece is incredibly detailed with a stunning use of texture and colour to create intricate and multi-layered images that are captivating and haunting. Although her artistic career has been relatively short, Aimee has had a number of recognitions such as winning awards and having her work featured in a number of group shows, and included in several public collections, including the Belfast School of Art, The Arts Council of Ireland’s permanent collection, and the Northern Ireland Civil Service Art collection. However, she explained that her highlight to date was being short-listed for the Robert Walter’s UK New Artist of the Year award in collaboration with the Saatchi Gallery in London. “That was just amazing. It was my first time being in London. It was great meeting other artists and having the opportunity to eoutside Northern Ireland.” Aimee Melaugh’s first solo show at the ArtisAnn Gallery was an stunning success. She’s an incredibly talented artist and definitely one to watch out for in the future. The official opening of Handful of Notes took place on 1st March.

Strange Sally Diamond book launch It was a full house at No Alibis, Botanic Avenue, for its first official launch of 2023. Guests, including Jan Carson, Stuart Neville, Brian McGilloway, Claire Allen and Sharon Dempsey, were out in force to celebrate the latest literary release from fellow author, Liz Nugent. After reading a short but truly captivating extract from Strange Sally Diamond, Liz joined No Alibis’ proprietor David Torrans in an informal conversation. One of the tidbits they shared was that back in 2014 David was the first ever person to interview Liz during a book event at the Crescent Arts Centre. It seems only fitting that they were back together to chat about this wonderful new release. With Sally Diamond having one of the most unique voices I have encountered in

crime literature, Liz Nugent spoke about how her past in Irish film, theatre, and television, helped her to get into the mind of her characters. Nugent also spoke about how Sally is one of the few characters she has written that she truly likes. She explained that she finds creating despicable characters to be much more enjoyable, but that Sally - who is completely endearing - is special; something I think anyone who reads this book will agree with. The book picks up in a pivotal moment in Sally’s life. Nicknamed ‘Strange Sally Diamond’ by the locals, Sally can’t understand why what she did was so strange. She was only doing what her father told her to do, to put him out with the rubbish when he died. But quickly she becomes the centre of attention, not only from the hungry media
and police detectives, but also a sinister voice from a past she cannot remember. Before long, she begins to discover the horrors of her childhood, whilst she also steps into the world for the first time, attempting to make new friends and big decisions along the way. As the informal chat came to a close, guests were invited to get their books signed and chat to Liz. After hearing about the inspiration of the story, and a bit about how Sally was a version of Liz ‘without the filter’, I couldn’t wait to get stuck into this book. With a captivating main character, and a dark and gripping story, I couldn’t put it down. It’s a revelation of a book, and one which will stay with me for a long time. The launch of Strange Sally Diamond took place on 14 March.

Defying Gravity Banana Block, located in PortView Trade Centre in east Belfast, recently transformed into a vibrant catwalk for the inaugural ‘Defying Gravity’. This punk-inspired fashion competition, co-founded by Sinead Green, was the brainchild of punk icon Jordan Mooney before she sadly passed away in April 2022. To honour Jordan’s legacy, it was decided that the show must go on. Guests on the night, such as Connor Kerr and Becky Bellamy from Another World Belfast; Sighle Bhreathnach-Cashell, Laura O’Connor and Emma Campbell from the 2021 Turner prize winners, the Array Collective; and Sabrejets band members Liz and Brian Young, were welcomed to Banana Block with a complementary cocktail

by McConnell’s Irish Whiskey, before they were invited to take a seat along the catwalk. The purpose of Defying Gravity was to celebrate up and coming fashion designers from Northern Ireland showcasing what punk means to them in 2023. As host Julian Simmons said: “The evening is a celebration of the resurgence of punk on runways across the world.” The work of twelve superbly talented local fashion designers were showcased by models from Style Academy, to a soundtrack by acclaimed Belfast producer & DJ Phil Kieran. Each carefully created collection was judged by four very special guest judges: legendary Glasgow fashion designer Pam Hogg, award-winning Belfast hairdresser and stylist Andrew Mulvenna, fashion designer
and illustrator Sara O’Neill and London musician Marco Pirroni. The winner, announced by Pam Hogg at the end of the evening, was Robert McGillicuddy, who scooped an epic prize including immersive work experience with a major TV network and a £1000 cash prize. When presenting the award, Pam Hogg described McGillicuddy’s collection as, “Classic, simple and beautiful”. Before the night concluded with a fun-filled after party, the winners of a ballot in aid of Cancer Research NI were also announced. This inaugural fashion competition was a visual feast and hopefully Defying Gravity will become a staple in the Northern Irish fashion scene for many more years to come. Defying Gravity took place on 16 March.

THE DESIGN AND COMPLETION PROCESS IT BEGINS WITH A BRIEF As each project is unique, Arlene and her team first need to understand a client’s requirements and aspirations. As part of the brief, they establish the use of the property, personal style and expectations. They can either visit a client’s property or have an in-house meeting, ideally with initial floor plans and photographs. Understanding the time scale, budget, structural changes and all other requirements during this meeting is essential. Once the team have gathered all of this information, they will start preparing their cost proposal with an estimated budget for design concepts, fixtures, fittings and equipment and all other fees involved. NEXT STEP IS TO MOVE ONTO THE CONCEPT Once the scope of works and an outline budget are approved, the selected team will work closely with the client to ensure their aspirations are reflected in the design. They will also prepare a full proposal for the project including floor plans, furniture layouts, interior mood boards, furniture suggestions, joinery concepts and details of any structural changes to be made.
“The team at Arlene McIntyre Design provide a luxury interior design and architectural design service specialising in high-end residential projects”
DESIGN DEVELOPMENT AND WORKS Once concepts and budget are agreed then the next step is into the detailed design work. Working with their expert fixtures, fittings and equipment, Arlene McIntyre design will prepare and present all final selections, drawings and plans for everything included in the project and then present a final proposal and itemised breakdown of costs. They will also discuss the schedule of works including timelines on the production of goods and when the project will commence. Depending on the scope of works involved, the team can also engage their Project Management Team along with any appointed builders or tradesmen. The team will inform the client of the progress along the way. Before the final installation, they undertake a final walk through, to snag the property for all design finishes before final hand-over. The Arlene McIntyre team of highly experienced white-glove installers will fit and position every piece of furniture and handle all deliveries, positioning, assembling, installation, hanging and removal of all boxes and packaging. ADDITIONAL SERVICES OFFERED CAN INCLUDE Interior Styling Services Clients can also avail of Arlene McIntyre Design’s luxury interior styling service. PROVIDING LEGAL EXPERTISE FOR OVER 50 YEARS 10 STEP GUIDE TO BUYING OR SELLING YOUR HOME If you are considering buying or selling your home, this guide provides information on matters to consider whilst hopefully, at the same time, reducing the stress involved. 1. CONTACT YOUR SOLICITOR
Your first call when selling your home should always be to your solicitor. Quite often solicitors are not instructed until a buyer has been found and a completion date has been agreed. Contacting your solicitor early facilitates Title Deeds being sought from your Lending Institution, the sale contract being drafted, and property certificates and searches can be requested. If any extensions or works have been undertaken to your home, ensure that the planning permission and building control documents are furnished to your solicitor. Your solicitor will also explain how the conveyancing process works and what steps are involved to reach completion date.
2. APPOINT AN ESTATE AGENT
You may put your house on the market, but the estate agent is the one who actually sells it. Ask family, friends and neighbours - it’s always good to have a personal recommendation. In today’s technological world most estate agents provide full marketing portals, in addition to the printed sale brochure, such as website listings, videos and social media outlets such as Facebook and Twitter as a means of selling your home.
3. PREPARE YOUR HOME FOR VIEWINGS
Estate agents generally advise of the importance of keeping your home neat and tidy (this can prove a hard task where children are involved). It may also involve a coat of paint, tidy up of the garden, re-arrangement of furniture and declutter before any viewings. It is also the ideal opportunity to undertake a spring clean and donate unwanted items to charity.
Therese Johnston Managing Partner
can be obtained relatively cheaply by your estate agent and the details included in the sale brochure and listings.
contracts prepared by the solicitors are signed by all parties.
5. ARRANGING A MORTGAGE FOR YOUR PURCHASE
As a rule, the conveyancing process takes an average of six to eight weeks from the date of an agreed sale by the estate agent. Sometimes there will be a chain of sales and purchases and it is important that everyone knows what date they are all working towards.
Investigate the availability of a further mortgage offer for any potential purchase with your mortgage advisor/ mortgage lender. This ensures that you are aware of what mortgage offers are available, have a mortgage in principle agreed to facilitate negotiations and be fully aware of your maximum available funding.
6. SEEK YOUR OWN SURVEY
Although mortgage lenders undertake a property survey for the purposes of the mortgage offer, it is advisable that every purchaser arranges for their own home buyer’s survey. A survey will identify any issues or problems with the property before entering into a binding contract.
7. HAVE YOU DONE YOUR MATH?
There is nothing more overwhelming than the realisation you do not have sufficient funds to discharge all associated costs and outlays. Ascertain at an early stage the redemption figure and any penalties relating to your current mortgage. Your solicitor will have provided a detailed written breakdown of all costs associated with your purchase and sale including the Stamp Duty Land Tax payable on your purchase. Ensure that you include the costs for your estate agent, survey, removal company, redirection of mail, utility bills owing and house insurance costs.
4. OBTAIN AN ENERGY PERFORMANCE CERTIFICATE
8. EXCHANGE OF CONTRACTS
All properties being sold must have an Energy Performance Certificate. These certificates

SULLIVAN UPPER PREP basis, our children experience specialist PE, music, art and Spanish teaching. By providing a broad range of learning opportunities, and being a non-denominational school, we ensure the inclusion of every child in our classrooms. Extracurricular activities and celebrations of achievements: We understand that as part of the development of the whole child, each pupil should have access to a wide range of extracurricular activities. At Sullivan Prep, we provide drama, coding, art, music, choir, dance, technology & design clubs and a wide range of sport… to name but a few! We celebrate our childrens’ achievements both in class and through assemblies, Seesaw and multimedia presentations. Our school takes part in the Daily Mile and on a weekly basis our Prep 7 and Prep 1 children join together as ‘Buddies’. Wraparound care: Nurture and support extends outside of school hours, being provided by our onsite Afterschool Club and Early Morning Reading club. This year, we are providing a ‘Stay and Play’ club for our incoming Prep 1 pupils.
WE VALUE EACH CHILD AS A UNIQUE AND PRECIOUS INDIVIDUAL. Our Vision: That every child and parent is warmly welcomed into the Sullivan family and that when each child progresses to their next level of education, they graduate from our school feeling valued, knowing their individual strengths and talents, having made close and enduring friendships and reached their own personal potential. Developing the whole child: At Sullivan Prep, we want our children to achieve their personal potential through a range of fun and stimulating experiences both inside and outside of the classroom. We focus on many aspects of each child’s personal development: personal and social skills, being creative and physical, their moral, spiritual, logical and linguistic skills. Children learn best when they are happy and emotionally secure: At Sullivan Prep we have created an environment in which our children experience nurture and emotional literacy support on a daily basis, from a collaborative team of caring, talented, fun and genuinely dedicated staff, thus ensuring the development of each child’s self-esteem. We demonstrate the importance of pupil voice through the work carried out by the School and Eco Councils. High quality teaching and learning, inclusivity and communication are key: We support our children on their academic journey by providing a range of exciting learning opportunities in all subject areas. Our staff provide excellent standards in teaching and learning, communicating this learning with parents via the digital Seesaw platform. On a weekly
Looking towards the future: By providing a range of assemblies, events and specialist learning weeks, celebrating various events in the global calendar, from Chinese New Year, Mental Health and Science Week, to Internet Safety and International Women’s day, we believe that our children are developing their understanding of the world around them. We are always striving to provide that higher level of learning for our children and by introducing Careers Week this year, we believe this will allow our children opportunities to think about possible future roles in society. IEF Who Is Driving Integrated Education? Each and every Integrated School has been built or Transformed to become Integrated because of the determination of parents to have their children educated with members of communities different from their own. It is only with the will of a majority of parents that the road to integration will begin. Almost any school can become Integrated (apart from hospital and special schools) and you can register support for your child’s school to explore this option at: www.integratemyschool.com
4 Principal Mrs Coulter, Andrew Norrie Senior Outreach Officer at the IEF, and pupils from Ballymena Nursery celebrate parents voting yes to Integrated Education.
The Integrated Education Fund (IEF) and the Council for Integrated Education (NICIE) are proud to work together to help promote and support the development and growth of Integrated Education in Northern Ireland. There has been much to celebrate in the past year for Integrated Education – a year overshadowed by the sad passing of our great friend and champion, Baroness May Blood, who will remain forever in our hearts and minds. In September 2022, two more schools opened successfully as Integrated schools. Through the year our ‘Integrate My School’ campaign helped support seven positive school parental ballots held in favour of transforming to an Integrated School. In March 2022, we witnessed the passing of the Integrated Education Bill (now an Act) at Stormont, brought forward by Kellie Armstrong MLA. That same month saw the ending of the ‘Teachers’ Exemption’ from the Fair Employment Treatment Order, a Bill brought forward by former MLA Chris Lyttle. Throughout 2022 several events took place celebrating the 40th Anniversary of Lagan College, the first planned Integrated school, and now the most oversubscribed school in Northern Ireland despite having 1,425 pupils. BACKGROUND What is Integrated Education? The Integrated school provides a learning environment where an intentional mix of children from Catholic and Protestant backgrounds, as well as those of other faiths, cultures and communities, can learn with, from and about each other every day in the same school. The careful mix within Integrated Schools is not left to chance. The balance of children from diverse backgrounds is supported by parents, staff and governors who all work to build inclusive communities which are strong and confident enough to recognise and celebrate their cultural and religious mix.
Moving Forward In April 2023 we look forward to the publication of an Integrated Education Strategy (Department of Education) and the findings of the Independent Review of Education. Within the last year, seven schools have successfully held parental ballots for Transformation and will seek Ministerial approval to become Integrated, and many others are currently moving towards this. PARENTS’ PERSPECTIVE Why should I #ChooseIntegrated for my child? “I want my child to know who he is and believe in himself but I also want him to respect others. I believe an education in an Integrated School is the best way for this to happen. I am delighted that the parents of Carrickfergus Central voted to Transform the school.” Tara Nellins, parent Carrickfergus Central Primary School. SCHOOL PERSPECTIVE Bangor Integrated Nursery School recently celebrated their Transformation to Integrated status. “Bangor Nursery School has always been an inclusive school where all communities, cultures and backgrounds are welcomed and celebrated. In everything we do as a school, we put the children and families first. As an Integrated Nursery School, we have formalised our ethos and our commitment to educating children from all communities together, so that everyone can feel valued in our school. We know that learning together in an inclusive environment, especially from this young age, is what is best for the children enrolled with us. “ Pamela Algie, Principal of Bangor Integrated Nursery School. There is a sense that real momentum is building for Integrated Education. The IEF and NICIE are working with more schools, more parents and more communities than ever before. None of this success could have been achieved without the help of our supporters here and indeed worldwide. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT INTEGRATED EDUCATION, THEN PLEASE CONTACT JILL CASKEY, PARENTAL ENGAGEMENT MANAGER: JILL@IEF.ORG.UK OR SEE OUR WEBSITE: WWW.IEF.ORG.UK

SEAVIEW PRIMARY SCHOOL 90 YEARS OF SEAVIEW PRIMARY SCHOOL In May, Seaview will be celebrating 90 years of educational provision in North Belfast. Celebrations will coincide with the coronation of King Charles III. The school continues to serve a changing and diverse community within the North Belfast area, celebrating cultures and tradition hand in hand. As a school we are aware of changes in education and educational thought and processes. We have engaged with Thinking Matters throughout this academic year. The approach involves the whole educational community sharing a common goal when both pupils and staff learn how to become reflective, critical and creative thinkers. The children are encouraged to demonstrate independence and co-operative learning, promoting psychological wellbeing of both staff and pupils. Seaview have continued to maintain The National Nurturing Schools Award which we are extremely very proud of. THE CURRICULUM The school continues to focus on the academic success of the children. Literacy and oracy skills from an early age are encouraged, instilling a love of story and poetry. The children are regularly immersed in many focused activities and, reading many genres, is encouraged. Literacy Week is always a big event in Seaview and this year was no exception. A special focus on book illustrations took place this year. We celebrated an online writing and illustration lesson with Sue Hendra and Paul Linnet. Children in the senior classes welcomed a visit from local author and illustrator Jonathan Temples. The Arts continue to play a huge role in the life of Seaview Primary School. Following Covid, our talented choir and violinists have enjoyed taking part in
various events, including the Ballyclare Festival and visits to community care homes. Many of the children were awarded with trophies and commendations. We continue to share a successful corporate partnership with Belfast City Airport, where the choir sang at Christmas, welcoming home weary travellers. Seaview continues to offer wrap-a-round provision for the children. Various after-school clubs cater for a wide range of interests and ages. Football and rugby teams actively take part in local tournaments. At Seaview, outdoor learning for all children has become a big focus. We have developed several outdoor areas which offer alternative learning environments to all our pupils. We continue to invest in staff training and innovative practice in technology. This training enhances and supports academic achievement and opportunities for the children. Community links remain a focus for the school and strong relationships with parents and community groups such as the PSNI, Fire Service NI, Crusaders Football Club and local churches are all actively involved in supporting curricular activities.

MILL STRAND INTEGRATED SCHOOL & NURSERY CELEBRATING 35 YEARS OF INTEGRATED EDUCATION ON THE CAUSEWAY COAST. Mill Strand Integrated School & Nursery is built on a simple yet fundamental value… “A belief in every child, in the personalities, talents and qualities that make them uniquely special.”
To help the school cater for demand, Mill Strand will move to its new campus on the Ballywillan Road in Portrush in the spring of 2024. The new, state-of-the-art school will not only provide the additional space required but will also improve the facilities and resources on site to help the school meet the needs of each and every child. To realise this, the school strives through on-going reflective practice to live up its core values in all aspects of school life and to provide a child centred environment that allows pupils to not only fulfil their potential but actually enjoy school.
As the area’s only Integrated Primary School, Mill Strand benefits from a rich and diverse school community that enables it to not only recognise and accept difference but to actually celebrate it. In doing so, Mill Strand Integrated School & Nursery provides its pupils with a positive disposition and strong foundations for future learning, enabling children from the school to excel in all aspects of life and education after they leave primary education.
With so much to offer, from high standards in Learning & Teaching to an inclusive, caring, integrated and child centred approach, international acclaim for its work in outdoor learning, exciting school residential and extracurricular opportunities as well as award winning science and historical projects, the school is working to secure a high-quality integrated education for all prospective families seeking a place in the school.
