L'aerodinamica è una scienza esatta ma non universale nel senso stretto poichè è legata alla velocità ed alle dimensioni del corpo: una scienza quindi dove l'analisi delle condizioni di contorno e delle variabili d'ambiente, così come delle esigenze di un soggetto, è imprescindibile. Così siamo partiti da un'approfondita scansione delle linee di flusso che l'aria genera attorno al corpo del ciclista per capire come il casco interagisca con il complesso atleta+bicicletta, e abbiamo analizzato l'aerodinamica nel suo complesso. Abbiamo quindi spostato ulteriormente l'asticella e ci siamo messi alla prova nel mondo reale: la validazione in Galleria del Vento di quanto progettato è stato il momento di consolidamento e raffinamento di questo lavoro, ma non ci bastava. Il risultato più sorprendente è stato vedere come una prova del casco "a banco" isolato dal contesto fosse anche opposta a quella fatta sul ciclista in movimento: le variabili che entrano in gioco nel mondo reale, ovvero quando il casco viene pedalato da migliaia di cislisti in tutto il mondo, sono tali da potenzialmente ribaltare quanto espresso in un contesto statico e artificiale. Altezza del ciclista, inclinazione della testa, livello di calzata, dimensioni del torace e del viso, la capacità di inarcare la schiena in posizione... sono solo alcune delle variabili che hanno un impatto notevole sulla resa aerodinamica del casco stesso.
Aerodynamics is an exact science, although changes in speed and body shape mean that its rules are not universally applicable. The size and shape of the individual cyclist, surrounding atmospheric conditions and specific requirements are also fundamental. We began with an in-depth study into how air flows around a cyclist’s body in motion, in order to understand how helmets fit in to the overall picture of cycling aerodynamics. We then set ourselves the further challenge of verifying our findings in our wind tunnel lab. This gave us the chance to consolidate and refine our Design. Next, we went even further by asking real cyclists to test our helmets in real situations. This is the only way of ensuring optimum Design; we know that testing in an artificial situation is never enough. An individual cyclist’s height, the angle of their head, how the helmet sits on their head, the size and shape of their torso and face, how they arch their spine… these are just some of the variables that have a significant impact on helmet aerodynamics.
Il Powerlogic Lab si è quindi posto l'obiettivo di offrire un casco che avesse prestazioni aerodinamiche superiori, ma che non costringesse a compromessi in altri ambiti: livello di areazione, peso ed aerodinamica non sono valori facilmente conciliabili. In rh+ invece ci siamo riusciti, trovando un modo di bilanciare i flussi d'aria dentro il casco con quelli esterni ed a differenti angoli. Da qui è nato quello che chiamiamo l'Advanced Aerodynamic Design: una serie di princìpi e criteri di progettazione aerodinamica avanzati che fanno dello Z Alpha il miglior compromesso tra areazione ed aerodinamica disponibile sul mercato. Il nostro casco è risultato il più veloce nella prova indossata con il ciclista in movimento, ed in ogni caso di gran lunga il più aereato: anche più aerato di molti dei tradizionali caschi aperti a cui siamo abituati.
Our Powerlogic Lab set itself the difficult task of creating helmets that offer cyclists advanced aerodynamic performance, without compromising on features like ventilation and weight. We found a successful way of balancing the flow of air inside the helmet with the air that flows in various directions around the outside. We called this solution Advanced Aerodynamic Design. It features a series of advanced aerodynamic characteristics that together provide the Z Alpha with the best balance between ventilation and aerodynamics available on the market today. This helmet came out as the fastest in real time trials and consistently offered the highest level of ventilation; it offers even better ventilation than many traditional open helmets currently available.

THE MECHANICS OF A CRASH - Although no two crashes are identical, two main types of force - linear and rotational - are related to the majority of brain injuries. Most real-world impacts actually subject your brain to a combination of both linear and rotational forces.
COME FUNZIONA - Ci sono 3 componenti principali in un casco equipaggiato col MIPS: la calotta in EPS, la calottina gialla in policarbonato a bassa frizione e gli attacchi elastomerici posizionati tra i primi due. In un impatto, il sistema di ritenzione elastomerico si allunga permettendo alla calotta in EPS di ruotare indipendentemente attorno al cranio. Di quanto si muove il sistema? Solo pochi millimetri. Ma proprio quei pochi millimetri nel primo istante dell'impatto riducono notevolemte la quantitĂ di forze rotazionali che altrimenti verrebbero trasferite al cervello, all'interno della scatola cranica.
HOW DOES IT WORK - There are three main components to a MIPS-equipped helmet: the EPS liner, the Low Friction Liner and an elastomeric attachment system between them. In an impact, the elastomeric attachment system stretches to allow the EPS liner to rotate independently around your head. How much does the system move? Just a couple of millimeters. But that few millimeters of movement can reduce the amount of rotational force that may be transferred to your brain.
