ACROSS THE DESERT SANDS....
Steps stormed the stage at the Dubai Opera House, in their first full length headline show in April, in Lisa's adoptive home of Dubai. Billed as a “pop extravaganza in the local press. Steps performed the scaled down version of Party On The Dancefloor, which they premiered at Butlins in January. (Set List on page XX) The show offered a chance for some of that local talent to shine as backing dancers to the group, as Lisa put them through their paces during a tough audition process, saying she found it difficult to whittle the auditionees down to just the required 8 Lisa put the dancers through their paces and rehearsed the show with
the chosen 8 every day before the rest of the band fully arrived just a few days before the show. Lisa revealed in an interview that there was just one final rehearsal with the band and the dancers before show time. The Dubai Opera House were very accommodating to the band and removed all of their stalls seating to enable the audience to ensure the residents of Dubai got the full Steps experience and were able to quite literally party on the dancefloor! Despite some of the strict local laws, the show kept in elements such as the 'Love Wins' projection and H dancing with a male partner.

Having picked up the Specs Appeal gong at last year’s awards, Claire said: ‘I’ve been a glasses wearer for a few years now and I absolutely love it. I love to mix things up and try a geek-chic frame one day and then a sexy cat’s eye the next. ‘Winning the Specs Appeal award last year was incredibly flattering and it was an honour to share a room with so many proud and fabulous glasses wearers. Each entry to Spectacle Wearer of the Year will generate a £1 donation to charity Kidscape. Claire adds: ‘Bullying is an issue that has always been close to my heart so I’m proud to be representing a competition that supports a charity like Kidscape. KEEEEEEEP DANCING! MAY 2018 UK free paper Metro ran an article suggesting that Claire is eager to participate in the 2018 series of Strictly Come Dancing. Despite not yet being officially asked, she admitted she would jump at the chance to get involved in the ballroom competition She told Bang! Showbiz: ‘If I was to do anything, I would love to do Strictly – it’s right up my street in terms of lovely costumes and hair and makeup. It’s all very glam,’ she added. ‘It all looks amazing until you are in it and then it’s like “Oh my God, what am I doing?”’ Claire admitted there could be one vital flaw in her plan. ‘I can’t dance with a partner,’ she admitted. ‘Whenever we’ve done that I end up getting picked up and moved around because I’ve kind of got two left feet when it comes to trying to dance with a partner.’ Claire is certainly no stranger to the mad world of reality television having placed 3rd in the 2nd series of Popstar To Operastar. 2 years later she entered the Celebrity Big Brother house, where she placed 4th. in 2015 she then learnt to fire dance for the short-lived ITV series Get Your Act Together where she went through to the final & came 3rd.

Summer Anthem There’s a strange phenomenon in life where as music lovers we remember everything about the moment we heard a new song by our favourite band. Steps were always a particularly visual band, and their videos often felt like they captured a time and a place. Close your eyes and listen to “One For Sorrow” today and you’ll feel as if you’ve been transported back to the summer of 1998, suggestively dancing through a field sunflowers of sunflowers in your all-white ensemble! Some of us had discovered the band when they’d released the little-known Bananarama cover “Last Thing On My Mind” a few months before, and a few even got on-board during their short-lived country-trance phase of ‘5-6-7-8’, but “One For Sorrow” was the moment most of us fell in love with the fresh-faced five-piece so accurately described by Pete Waterman as “ABBA on speed”. Comparisons with the Swedish hit-maker’s sad-banger “The Winner Takes It All” are all too easy to make, but perhaps their habit of borrowing melodically was what made them so popular with the public. When they weren’t covering Bee Gees-written hits outright and taking them to the next level, they were paying “homage”, like on their 2000 number one hit “Stomp” which borrowed from Chic’s disco hit “Everybody Dance”. Claire’s positioning as the band’s lead vocalist on this single may have hurt relations in the band at that time, but in retrospect it was a decision well made – “One For Sorrow” proved Steps were far, far beyond being one-hit wonders – and vocally, they were head-and-shoulders above many of their ‘90s peers too. While “Tragedy” has come to be Steps’ signature song, “One For Sorrow” became a template for much of their work that followed – from “After The Love Has Gone” and later H & Claire’s finest moment as a duo on “All Out Of Love”, there have been echoes of this summer classic through their catalogue. You could say “One For Sorrow” is the ultimate ‘Tears on the Dancefloor’ anthem!

For 3 consecutive summers, Steps delivered 3 fresh summer anthems - point your finger in the air, whilst dressed in canary yellow and do your best flamenco kick as we take a whirlwind overview of their summer hits.
In the summer of 1999 Ricky Martin was riding high in the charts with his Latin inspired Livin Da Vida Loca, Steps had just finished a highly successful campaign, Step One with four top 10 singles and fans were waiting eagerly for news of new material Would they return with a familiar sound or would they come back with a more mature sound? Fortunately fans did not have to wait long for answers as Steps returned only a matter of months after the release of Better Best Forgotten forgot with a brand-new single Love’s Got A Hold On My Heart. Rumoured to have originally been written by Pete Waterman in 1992, Love’s Got A Hold On My Heart continued with the same formula that had provided steps with success during the Step One era whilst moving their sound on ever so slightly. The bright and breezy track was certainly well received by the loyal U.K. fan base as they managed to catapult it to #1 in the midweek charts, however, they were pushed down to #2 when the final charts were announced being held off by the Latino lothario Ricky Martin. The colour theme continues, this time with probably their most iconic colour choice, canary yellow, with Claire going for a slightly Britney Spears yellow cowgirl look complete with Stetson-esque hat. From this point on if you wanted to parody Steps, canary yellow was the coloir to use. As well as returning with another iconic colour theme, the fivesome returned with an equally memorable video. The video saw Steps trying to safely deliver “Steps - The Movie” to the Canne Film Festival whilst having it stolen by a dodgy fella

DISFRUTA Summer 2000 became the Summer Of Love as, for the third consecutive year, Steps delivered another summer anthem, here blogger Paul Reynolds gives his verdict. ummer Of Love took Steps into glorious, salsa inspired dance genius. I was instantly smitten by this song and rightly so. It remains a summer anthem to rival the likes of Holiday, Cruel Summer and (later) Long Hot Summer.
S
Everything about it was a glorious celebration of the Steps sound yet enhancing it with intoxicating rhythms and fiery sensuality. All about letting down your defences and freeing your inhibitions, the song did just that thanks to passionate vocals, an irrepressible refrain and dance routine to die for. The vibrant colours of the video was a mesmerising juxtaposition to the muted tones of When I Said Goodbye (again,

highlighting the breadth and scope of the fab five's abilities). There wasn't a gay bar in England that wasn't playing this loud and proud during the first summer of the millenium. The message of 'be who you want to be' resonated far and wide, inviting people universally to shimmy onto the dancefloor and fling their hands to the sky in wild abandon. Utterly euphoric pop that is still a thrilling romp today. A plethora of remixes to suit all moods accentuated the appeal of the song. It gave Steps their eighth consecutive top five hit

D N E K WEE E H T ON R O O L F E C DAN Neil Senior tells us all about Steps' first headlining performance as a 4 piece as they returned to Butlin's, Minehead for the first time since 2000 20
OMG⁄STEPS are playing at Butlins!!!‰ Yes…My names Neil and I’m a STEPS fan. I’m not ashamed to admit it, a pop music addict, a party dance pro (self taught as well!) and since ‘5,6,7,8’ was released I’m sure, as like most of you, I’ve been hooked. So when the facebook notification came through on my mobile with the news this was honestly my immediate reaction. Now I don’t claim to have my ear to the ground for everything band related. Yes i’m a huge fan and it certainly helps having pages like ‘Ultimate Steps’ to prompt reaction, however this time it was all thanks to a tag from a fellow Steps fan who was also a friend on Facebook. Of course it took no time at all for me to follow the link and I was all over the post on the Butlins page. “Weekend on the Dancefloor”…(catchy title, wonder where they got that idea from?) and there you have it, bang goes the next 20-30 minutes (at work!) set aside to finding out what the discounted deal actually involved, what was happening involving STEPS, but more importantly could I get my hands on tickets still!!!
21
So I’ve already admitted i’m a huge STEPS fan. I spent a brief part of my past in a tribute band (Summer 2001…6 months performing in Ibiza! All expenses paid… BONUS!) and my own stories covering 21yrs of supporting the group. I also have history with Butlins. In 2002 I worked as a singer in the cast of their Centre Stage venue at the Skegness site. As a result I had a little knowledge of the Minehead site (where W.O.T.D was to be held) as
I’d spent a week or so rehearsing with the cast there. So a live-music Butlins weekend involving STEPS couldn’t be anything else but right up my street. I was already so excited!!!
bring in some company (and support) for him too it would make for a better weekend so I suggested his best friend Sharon & her husband Graham come along too. Cut to 30% discount for us all, a discreet mention of a Take-That tribute band and a few glasses of Pinot Grigio on offer and Sharon was in!!! Before they knew it TICKETS WERE BOOKED!!! YES!!! I’m going to see STEPS…AGAIN!!!
Minehead. Doors to the venue opened at 7pm and Vengaboys were on at 8:30pm!!! Thankfully it was a successful journey down south hitting very little traffic. When we started getting closer to our destination we noticed that we were following the same cars and the same line of traffic, it was obvious we were now in convoy all seemingly heading in the same direction, all full of equally excited individuals, Once the booking had majority probably steps fans too. On arrival Minehead Butlins was a hive of activity as various groups of individuals were all stood around the car parks heading to their accommodation - bottles of alcohol in one hand, suitcases and more drinks in the other. The check-in process was simple enough too, queues formed in alphabetical order due to surname so I joined my queue (the ’Sfor-STEPS' queue naturally!!) 10 minutes passed and my my turn been made there was little arrived…and there it was: mention of it until the „NOTE FROM STEPS: countdown app in my to a family mobile phone was on Due single figures and soon emergency, we are very enough it hit 24hrs to go!!! sad to announce that Lee Bags were packed, travel wonÊt be joining us at our plans made and all that Weekend On The was left to do was to get Dancefloor show at there and start having Butlins Minehead Arena some STEPS related fun!
It didn’t take much effort rounding up support for the trip either. First from Richard (my other half) not a Butlins fan but a great Living in West Yorkshire it tomorrow evening⁄‰ supporter of me and my was a 4 and 1/2hrs drive to An A4 framed twitter love of STEPS. If I could message taken from the

@OfficialSteps account placed strategically at every check-in desk. The first of a couple of STEPS-related bombshells dropped I might add though this being the most crucial one of them. My initial thoughts were of course - I hope everything is alright, I hope he’s alright…but quickly moved to - I know all the words…And the routines…I wonder if they need a stand in?
acts were performing. A large area was set aside by metal barriers with security in attendance at all times. But wherever you were you could see the large screen at the back of the stage, the Quickly bringing myself back same message displayed so we could see how things to reality and with no other that had been at check-in worked. A pitcher of cocktail in hand and deckchair information provided regarding Lee’s absence. surrounding Lees absence I A good 30 minute stalk of the secured we waited for found the same message venue later and we had events to unfold… across all of their social media accounts but still no further update of what had actually happened. Our plan was to head into the thick of it to see what was going on around the site. First things first, check out where STEPS were gonna be performing. The stage itself was inside the Skyline Arena, this was to be the focal point of events where all the main
enough of an insight as to how things may play out when the time arrives for STEPS to come on stage. We also had time on our side, STEPS were headlining the Saturday night so we had all of Friday nights action to experience. I’d heard from a very reliable source that these events had very little crowd control so I was eager to hatch a plan of action as early as possible for getting the best view of my favourite people!
First security moved into place around the arena and then the barriers came down…all at once…everyone moved in paying no attention to the queue. My source was correct!!! No crowd control whatsoever!!! I was relieved, not only because it was anyones game with the run to the front to secure the coveted centre barrier place, but more importantly it meant I could get a lie in in the morning rather than queue I was thrilled to see outside the venue from Vengaboys on the 8:30am!!! programme of Vengaboys were on form events upon booking again, successful in their role our mini-break as of kicking off the weekend they had really and geeing up the crowds impressed me as playing a similar set (if not STEPS support act, so exactly the same, if my it was a sure thing that memory serves me well) to we would aim to see that accompanying them at them amongst others the P.O.T.D tour. Even Bjorn in plans we had Again managed to hold their made. Doors own on stage despite the opened at 7pm so we excitable lads in the crowd made it there on time throwing around boxer

The next day started early and we were up and about at around 9.30am… “OMG Only 12hrs to go!!!!” Fanboy excitement set aside we all decided that after breakfast we should head into the town of Minehead to explore as we had plenty of spare time before ‘Rule The World as Take That’ hit the Centre Stage venue at 3pm (We had Sharon's needs to meet after all!) Taking a leisurely trip around a very blustery Minehead, sampling home made fudge on the way, we made our way back to Butlins to see out the afternoons entertainment. It was only upon reaching the entrance of the site when low and behold a green tourbus drives by us!!! Now time spent in Belfast stalking the SSE Arena for opening night of the tour led us to believe that this wasn’t the dancers bus as I had my photo taken with THAT bus and they had a sign in front stating ‘Dancers’ and it couldn’t have been a crew bus as they were all numbered. THIS bus had no sign!…and a similar bus at the back of the arena in Belfast that we saw ALL of steps jump on had no sign either!…This MUST have been steps tourbus!!! (Fanboy excitement was back in full force).
and the STEPS merchandise stand was in place!!! Selling similar items to that of the tour (at a much lower price!). I bagged the mug that i’d missed out on previously (WINNER!) but also a new T-Shirt had been produced for ‘Weekend on the Dancefloor’. Another purchase made and a brief chat to the guys behind the stall and BANG…second bombshell dropped…rumours of a STEPS Meet & Greet had started to emerge and the merchandise stall team had been the bearer of the news! How did they know about this and if this was the case where the hell do we get tickets?!?!? It was a mere matter of seconds and you could see the panic set in amongst everyone. One of my fan-friends Phil went straight onto Ticketmaster, another of his friends was calling Butlins reservations desk and I made a phonecall to Event Travel where I’d brought my P.O.T.D Meet & Greet tickets from minutes later and absolutely NOTHING!!! We’re they making it up?
Even more barriers had appeared in the arena, these much taller and covered in blackout cloth so nothing could be seen beyond them. I also bumped into some other fan friends that No-one seemed to settle at the lack of i’d made through instagram/facebook news surrounding the Meet & Greet and

tement turned to giddiness the fanboy within emerged again, straight onto twitter facebook to see if any of band had posted any hints clues as to their
whereabouts or what was going on. Thankfully my greatest source of info during rehearsals and once the P.O.T.D tour was in full swing were the dancers instagram accounts and in this case they didn’t disappoint. One of them had posted a story a few hours previously on the tourbus of most of the dancers from the tour en-route to Minehead! The picture was becoming clearer…Video screens from the tour, backing dancers from the tour, 'Scared Of The Dark’ intro…Would we really get to see the full show again tonight?
Uncertain of what we were about to discover the nerves kicked in and timidly we edged up towards the group of dancers. We were in luck! H and Lisa were hidden in amongst the group - dressed accordingly in baseball caps and hooded tops so as not to attract too much unwanted attention from crazy fans ready to pounce! (They really need to try a little harder next time!!!) So here’s the thing, I’m not the confident sort who will go up to people to ask for photos and autographs unless i’m in a situation where i’m certain there’ll be no embarrassment of being turned down (or turned away!) This was obviously not one of those moments. However Phil clearly thought otherwise. “LISA!?!?”…
With no further action surrounding any form of soundcheck groups settled back into their chat and myself, Richard, Sharon and Graham decided that a drink was in order. Until we spotted Glynn, Immediately attention was STEPS security with the dancers thrown in the direction of the -another bombshell! stalker types huddling in the Now Glynn is a 6 foot+ chap, bushes next to the dancers skinhead and built!!! Glynn was SO WERE STEPS!!! Turning sprung into action evidently to Richard, who smiled at my annoyed at Phil’s yelp! into the Centre Stage venue where conveniently Natalie McGrath was performing her Kylie Minogue tribute act. We we’re hot on their tails… I know it seems crazy and i’m hoping that you are sympathetic, but being caught up in the adrenaline of seeing your favourite pop stars at close proximity results in all sensible thoughts and actions being thrown out the window (along with the lack of confidence). Replaced by a haziness (a fan-fog to coin my own phrase), where the little focus you have in the spur of the moment shifts to STEPS ultimately being my best friends and OF COURSE they want to see me again and have ANOTHER photograph with me! Then reality sets in. We’re in the same venue as them, only metres away, phones in hand preparing selfie-mode, neither of us daring enough to go over and speak to someone. They however are clearly on their down time, undercover, guarded by the notorious Glynn and not wanting to be disturbed. So with photo ops efforts met with a checkmate we turn on our heels like disappointed paparazzi and rush back to the group to inform them of our happenings! The rest of the afternoon is a bit of a blur. We definitely made it to the ‘Rule The World’ Take That Tribute much to Sharon’s delight. However despite ‘Gary’s’ best efforts of a Mancunian accent and a suspicious looking ‘Howard’ and ‘Mark’ the only other memorable event that happened was being present for STEPS carrying out the soundcheck. Hindered by black cloth and 6ft barriers STEPS were unseen and unheard for the majority (I assume levels were mainly being checked for in-ear monitors and backing tracks), but to the keen ear voices could be heard from the stage in the distance. The only glimpse of the fabulous foursome could be captured upon standing on a chair (and being told

to get down by Glynn…no peeping over allowed at this point!). It was upon our telling off that another discovery was made, Adam from STEPS management company Fascination was with Glynn and happened to pass our group. Richard, being the confident one of our partnership, grabbed his attention and asked him about the Meet & Greet. Of course…the Meet & Greet…If anyone knew anything it would be this guy. if there was one planned he would definitely be present. Disappointingly as things turned out it was all fabrication, our STEPS bubble burst in an instant as there were never any plans in place. Proof that a mere slip of the tongue by someone simply misinformed could stir up a whirlwind of panic and uncertainty in STEPS-fandom. Adam was kind enough to stay for a brief chat with us all and put our minds at ease. He also put a stop to any more rumours with a quick visit to the merchandise stand (hope they weren’t reprimanded too much!!). Various spoilers followed during soundcheck regarding the set list as sudden bursts of music echoed around the huge white tent. ‘If You Could Read My Mind’ intro to ‘Stomp’, the Latin intro to ‘Better the Devil You Know’ and more clues revealed from images seen on the massive video screens at the back of the stage: the star spangled images for ‘5,6,7,8’, the rain drenched club sequence to ‘Neon Blue’ and even the ‘Tragedy’ wedding cake! Our earlier suspicions
were confirmed, they must be SPICE’ came on at 8pm. One of my old performing a similar length set to the tour. As with most concerts myself and Richard attend, if our tickets are General Admission and not seated tickets we always try and get as close to the front as possible. Richards a firm believer that if you can’t see the whites of their eyes or get spat on by your favourite people then its not worth standing behind the crowd admiring from afar.
40 minutes to go and we were joined by ‘Sonique’, the room and atmosphere was certainly building at this point. Sonique brought some classics with her…‘Feels So Good’… ‘Sky’ (one of my personal favs!!) Imagine if you will my next hour, filled with several panic-stricken moments… Where should we wait? Who will they let in first? Maybe last night will be different to tonight and in that case should we join the queue? Richard continued to remain calm. Holding our nerve had paid off, firmly in our place (stood relatively close to the back of the sound desk with a really friendly security guard), all barriers came down at once. It was 7pm FINALLY…and we ran!!! Feeling awfully bad for those stood 30 deep in the queue behind a line of people still filing in two-by-two, we hurtled towards the barrier, crowd control nowhere to be seen. WE HAD MADE IT!!! Just off centre to the pinnacle spot right slap bang in the middle but all the nerves had been worth it. We were there giddy and ready for being spat on!!! “Only 2.5hrs to go”… “WHAT?!?” Good job we had entertainment for the majority. DJ Pete Sherriff and Andy Joyce entertained the crowd at first then ‘VIVA
majority of people were here. This was it…SHOWTIME!!! And Boy they didn’t disappoint! I LOVED the opening sequence for the tour, it really built to a fantastic crescendo…and that reveal…I thought from a STEPS tour perspective it was one of their best to date. Here it had similar effect considering we were already one man down without Lee, no way of getting torch bearers through the audience and no hydraulic stage parts! Claire, Faye, H and Lisa all looked nervous to being with however their

nerves seemed to fade with the ever increasing noise and excitement from the crowd. The show continued momentum much like P.O.T.D although a few edits of songs and special additions for the tour were missed. It wasn’t until H addressed the crowd f o l l o w i n g ‘Happy’ (Richards favourite from the new album btw!) that Lee’s absence was discussed and it had been his request that the show go ahead without him. No more details given but a further request made of us all to help for a certain number coming up promising ‘the biggest karaoke ever seen!!!’ (OMG I love Karaoke!). ‘Stomp’ followed without its ‘If You Could Read My Mind’ intro however much to my delight the disco ball headed dancers remained in glittery place. The ‘Enough is Enough’ intro disappeared from ‘No More Tears On The Dancefloor’ and ‘Dancing With a Broken Heart’ missed in full (Damn that was a hit I was waiting for!!). In order to slow things down a little (they were in need of a good breather for sure) ‘Heartbeat’ replaced ‘When I Said Goodbye’. Then the moment we’d all been prewarned about…Karaoke time!!! It had been mentioned throughout the
28
day when talking about Lee not being present as to how they were going to perform ‘5,6,7,8’. Would H stand up to the mark and pull out some rapping skills from under his chaps? Errrrrrrmmm kind of… well not really…a good effort though!Reading some of the words from pieces of paper tapped to the stage (his eyesight left much to be desired!!) We on the other hand had the words in full karaoke style bouncing cursor included (no expense spared here).
If that wasn’t enough of a challenge then the wardrobe malfunction that followed could easily have sent H over the edge!!! Chaps almost around ankles (no belt on jeans and apparently no underpants either!!!) Lisa rushed to the rescue before H became a Deeper Shade of Pink! Microphone stashed under her arm Lisa managed to pull things
back together for H whilst Claire and Faye soldiered on with ‘Better the Devil You Know’. After a giggle filled ‘It’s the Way You Make Me Feel’ the rest of the show went without a hitch right through to the ‘Tragedy’ encore. It was an incredibly successful evening for STEPS. Lee was sadly missed, all our thoughts were with him and his family and it wasn’t the same without him being there. Never the less Claire, Faye, H and Lisa did a sterling job of bringing the house down. They have every right to be proud of their efforts and I’m confident that the Butlins Weekend on the Dancefloor crowd all walked away pleased as Punch that their STEPS cravings had been well and truly satisfied…for now!!! It was a successful evening for us too. Being at the front of the crowd, not too wet from being so close. We even managed to get a few waves here and there from Claire and Lisa. Richard even got recognition from Faye during ‘Heartbeat’ when she said “lovely to see you” as she walked past us whilst crossing the stage. My life was complete… (Maybe they do recognise us now!!!).

APRIL 2018
"T
o be continued" teased the Dancing With A Broken Heart video. What exactly did they mean...?
After the success of their 2017 comeback/ 20th anniversary celebrations, which included the #2 hit album Tears On The Dancefloor, and it's subsequent re-release Crying At The Disco, fans were hoping that Steps wouldn't just disappear for another 5 years. As promotion started in March 2017, Lisa let slip during an interview they'd recorded enough material for 2 albums - a statement that was never mentioned again and quietly forgotten - but it still gave fans hope that a 6th album would eventually materialise. The announcement of the deluxe reissue bought 4 new tracks, which were all recorded during summer 2017 seemingly leaving this now mythical extra album of material untouched. Fast forward to April 2018, Steps were last seen headlining their Weekend On The Dancefloor event at Butlins in January, they're about to perform their first full length headline show outside of Europe at the Dubai Operahouse and embark on a headline open air summer tour - which means a round of regional press promo...

"And this is just the start of the Steps’ revival with more music and tours planned for the future. W e’re not hanging up our dancing shoes up at the end of the summer ,” confirmed Claire "The inevitable question is, will there be any new material from Steps in the future?," HuffPostUK asked Lisa in an interview the following week. The response was more confirmation more music was in the works. "Yes, yes there will. We’ve all talked about it as a band, and it’s not the end of the road for Steps," came the response. It was the news Steps fans had been hoping for, and less than a week later Claire spoke to The Sun about the band's future.

rumours and numerous I fnews articles are true, then
we are likely to see Steps releasing their 6th studio album possibly sometime in 2019.
How very exciting indeed. Steps latest offering Tears On The Dancefloor really did feel like a perfect bridge between where they left off back in 2001. (I personally choose to discount Light Up The World as it was more a covers album than anything). There was a clear progression though... there were certain tracks that appeared on the album that were somewhat different to what we have received before and too me, this was refreshing and appreciated.
With the news that Steps are looking to record more music in the future, Gareth Shortland writes where he thinks the band should draw inspiration from for the follow up to Tears On The Dancefloor
For example, lets take You Make Me Whole. This track has a real current feel to it. If played on the radio, I think a lot of people would have been surprised to learn that they were in fact listening to a song by the mighty Steps. If I'm honest here, You Make Me Whole was a real missed opportunity. It had the makings of an incredible single. The remixes would have probably performed well in the clubs, it would have been likely to get decent radio play if pushed and it would have potentially opened them up to a whole new audience. But, when the track was released as an instant grat track, the feedback from "core fans" wasn't largely all that great and as quick as it came, the song was quickly swept to one side and almost never talked about by the band. To be
35
fair, I've gone off on a bit of a tangent but the question I'm asking is this... what should the next album from Steps sound like? Should they stick to what they know best and keep the cheese? Or should they stray a little further a field and become somewhat a little more universal? In my opinion, a mix of both would serve them
well
but

Here are a few songs from other artists I can see really working on a new Steps album. I'm not
from experience, bodes very well for our favourite pop troop. What really makes a Steps song a lot of the time is the use of these really nice dramatic chord progressions throughout the songs. They tug at the heartstrings and give you that fuzzy feeling inside. This song, whilst being a little more whimsical

suggesting another Covers album by the way, just suggesting similar styles that could possibly be incorporated.
Rita Ora - Anywhere You Make Us Whole was on it's way to being a banger like this. It's current. It's fresh. Whilst still having a bittersweet lyric and uplifting melody and production. Some of the many ingredients that go into making the perfect Steps song. This would really show Steps in a different light to what people are used to seeing and hearing and I think they'd score a ot of new fans whilst again keeping the fans that have been there from the start happy.
Loreen - Euphoria Sweden's 2012 Eurovision Winner... what a tune. Steps need a song like this. They've always been seen by the media as "the band that should do Eurovision", lucky for us they aren't even considering it, but a Eurovision style track would suit them so well. I Will Love Again (taken from Tears On The Dancefloor) could have really gone down this route if produced in a similar way to Euphoria, but alas it was not meant to be. (Still obviously a brilliant and perfect album closer mind you)! I think

Adele - Make You Feel My Love Now before anyone says anything, I am not suggesting another album full of ballads... but, it's been a while since we've had a proper ballad like When I Said Goodbye and a new, deep, meaningful ballad could really do wonders on the next album. Steps are older now so I think a more mature sounding ballad in a similar vein to this, if not slightly more pop and uplifting would really work well.
Ace Of Base - The Sign Paradise Lost, September Sun... this style works incredibly well. (Still can't believe we got a live performance of Paradise Lost... what a time to be alive!). I'd love them to do a summer song in the same vein as this beauty. Something uplifting and fun lyrically. Maybe even a little cheeky to show off the fun side of our favourite pop fivesome.
Steps - It's The Way You Make Me Feel Finally, I think another song like this would make a lot of fans very happy. Written by Jorgen Ellofson, this wonderful track shows Steps at there best. The distribution of vocals is perfect. The production is perfect. This is a true Steps song and an It's The Way You Make Me Feel #2 would make a new album really sound complete. Much like Story Of A Heart did but maybe with a dash more Disney sparkle. :-)
The Saturdays - Up! This is a direction I've always wanted Steps to go in. I think they could have real fun with this kind of song. Kind of moody, domineering sound to it whilst still sounding relatively cheesy and fun. Very radio friendly too. I can imagine them doing a video thats like a nod to Liberty X - Just A Little to this kind of song.
That's that! I think we all know that whatever Steps come up with, they're next album, if we are lucky enough to get a next album, (make you're mind up Claire! ;-) haha) will be a real BANGER of an album. Tears On The Dancefloor was such a tremendous comeback album, they sure have got there work cut out as they have raised the bar very high indeed! Thanks for the music guys! :-)

Again, the vocals are pleasant enough, but when compared with its discoHannah Willcock takes you on a journey through the group’s lesser-known releases, tastic A-side, this song isn’t going to win any awards.

A midtempo number about blaming oneself for the breakdown of a relationship, the song does show off the vocal talents of the three girls, and sets a precedent for a song structure that we would come to see many times in the future, with Faye opening the song, followed by Lisa, paving the way for Claire to confidently take the lead in the chorus, accompanied by some nice harmonies and backing vocals from Lee & H. In short, it’s a nice introduction to the band, and shows that they have more to strings to their bow than just a one-hit wonder novelty linedancing act.

Possibly one of the most mature songs that the group has released, ‘Why’ is a beautiful ballad about yet another relationship ending, but this time, it’s the other half of the couple who has caused all the hurt. Featuring exquisite lead vocals from Faye, and an elegant backing track consisting of a stunning steel guitar and keyboard, this song from frequent collaborators Topham & Twigg is more than worthy of its place on the tracklisting of a number 2 hit single.

Although the lead vocals are shared, not for the first-time, it feels like Lee is left shortchanged. Clocking in at 2 minutes and 48 seconds, this is also one of the band’s shortest recordings. ÂStop Me From Loving YouÊ / 2001 B-Side to: ‘Chain Reaction’
Co-written by H & Claire with recent musical tour director, Steve Anderson, it’s difficult not to wonder if this collaboration was part of writing sessions that were the pre-cursor to H & Claire’s decision to leave B-Side to: ‘It’s The Way You Make Me the group to form a duo. The time in the studio as a duo at this point in the result is no less than Steps’ story. Steptacular. OPINION
When ultimate steps asked me once again to write an article for them I not only felt very privileged and honoured I was also in no doubt over what it should be about... There is no denying that we all have so so much love for Steps collectively as a group, however, as with everything we always have a favourite. Mine undeniably and unashamedly is the divine Mrs H aka Claire from Steps. It has always been Claire. From day one she has always stood out. Pure fierceness, from beautiful looks to an indisputable power house of a voice (even dubbed leather lungs by fellow band member Lee himself.) Going back to the day of the original audition everyone remarks on how Claire clearly stood out for her amazing vocal skills. This, alongside being absolutely stunning, is what launched her straight into being one fifth of Steps. I can still remember hearing the opening bars from one for sorrow and the hairs on my body standing on end - which still happens to this day. Her bubbly personality and warm nature instantly propelled her into the ‘front woman’ of the group.
42
Claire needed no gimmicks or stunts to shine, however the odd occasional yellow bikini top or blue body suit may have helped a little. The groups continual rise in popularity helped to secure Claire as a true icon. She smashed many lead vocals on tracks, both singles and albums, as well as being the stand out portion of the solo section on their many tours. She served killer looks throughout promotion, music videos and tours. Unfortunately appearances can be deceptive, despite an outwardly positive persona Claire was facing some internal battles. The band’s management at the time made some decisions that, whether right or wrong for the group, created tension and animosity. Claire sadly bore the brunt of this, which ultimately lead her to the decision to step away from the band. It wasn’t the last we'd see of our glorious queen as she formed a duo with fellow Steps member H. The pair not only released new material but also went on to present SMTV live, giving us a weekly dose of this amazing lady. It marked a more mature sound and look for Claire, trading in her trademark blonde locks for a sultry brunette look.

The new slimmed down Claire would go on to release of her own fitness dvd featuring tracks from both her Steps and Duo catalogue. Our queen would step further back into the world of showbiz by appearing in a documentary about her dramatic weight loss and transformation for her wedding to Reece titled Claire Richards: My Big Fat Wedding and as a contestant on Celebrity Masterchef proving her culinary skills. During the wedding documentary we got an insight into some of the battles Claire had faced with being in the band and the pressure that was put upon her. This was also one of the first time that we had witnessed a coming together of all original band members. It was also announced that Claire had fallen pregnant once again expecting her second child, daughter Daisy. Once again Claire gained a substantial amount of weight choosing this time to embrace her curves. 2011 was an extremely grand year for this fabulous women. Not only was Claire announced as a contestant on Pop Star To Opera Star, which she totally smashed (there was never any doubt) making it through to the semifinals, she also had a documentary feature of her own on Sky Living – Slave To Food which once again gave us an insight into Claire’s battles with food. From here we would hear the news that every fan had waited so long for… REUNION!!!

This was also captured on film by Living TV. Through this documentary we got to understand just how truly courageous and brave this wonderful lady was. In her own words "all I wanted to do was sing" something that she was made to feel ashamed and guilty for. Equally, as previously mentioned, pressure and choice from the management only served to magnify these feelings for Claire causing her to suffer to breaking point. Luckily for us the group as a whole were able to work through previous issues and reunite in all their glory. From this Claire would emerge as a true icon. We would be treated to a stint in the big brother house where Claire solidified her icon status, embracing everything about herself. We would once again be seeing

Claire on a regular basis as she became a regular presenter or guest spot on numerous daytime TV show, especially demonstrating her great baking skills. Once again Claire would appear to make a remarkable transformation with her weight which she has to this day maintained – you go girl! We saw Claire take a small step into the musical theatre world, making a performance in the show Seasons Of Love. Further movements were made with solo material. Claire would share with her fans that she was in the recording studio and working alongside the music legend that is Steve Anderson (whom would go on to later work with Steps on their 20 anniversary tour,) showcasing these talents during a show dedicated to Pete Waterman.
Two tracks were released, One For Sorrow and Deeper Shade Of Blue, both stripped back and raw demonstrating just how vocally talented Mrs Hill (Richards) really truly is. Claire would also use her ‘celebrity’ status to support a lot of charities in their work to raise money – showing a great sense of selflessness to others. Before drawing to a conclusion I obviously have to mention our most recent comeback which clearly mirrored Steps in their heyday, but with a true sense of enjoyment from every member of the band. Equally it is amazing to once again have a regular update featuring this beautiful lady!
