On my own...... As we head into autumn, the July release of the TOTD: Singles Collection has seemingly brought the Tears On The Dancefloor era to an end... However, while Steps take a little break before regrouping in 2019 to begin work on their next album, the big news for this issue is Claire going (temporarily) solo with her debut album "My Wildest Dreams"
Faye will be keeping you entertained on Saturday nights, as she hopes to lift the glitterball trophy as she joins the 2018 class of Strictly Come Dancing. KEEEEEEEP DANCING! AUGUST 2018
Whilst all eyes were firmly on Claire, as various news outlets suggested she was about to waltz across the Strictly Come Dancing ballroom, it was Faye who was revealed as the first stepper to attempt to snatch the infamous glitterball trophy. Rumours of Faye's involvement began to circulate on 10th August, as The Sun printed an article attempting to create a shitstorm based on the fact that Faye has danced in theatre shows and, of course, is a member of Steps - totally ignoring the fact that former Pussy Cat Doll Ashley Roberts is a professional choreographer.
her dance experience with Steps, the singer was quick to shoot that theory down. "I think you'll find a few of us have," she insisted. "It's what makes it an interesting competition. Even though I have got some experience, I don't have any ballroom experience, so I'm really excited get my teeth into that, dance with a partner and be whisked around the floor." Surprisingly, Faye told Alex and co-host Matt Baker that she's not keen to perform to any of her old Steps classics in the Strictly Come Dancing ballroom.
I'd get confused then," she admitted. On Monday 13th, Faye was revealed as "There's already a routine for that, so the 2nd celebrity to be taking part it'd throw me off. I'm not sure I want that." during The One show. "I would like to say I'm pretty good at dancing, "I hope that I can work it, and Strictly Come Dancing will air on Saturday & get as far as possible."When The One Sundays on BBC ONE from September 22nd. OPINION 5 x Platinum (UK) 1.4 million sales #2 UK chart peak / 64 weeks on charts Your favourite bandÊs first album is a thing of significance – everything they release afterwards is compared to it by both us the fans, and also the critics. It also sets the tone for what the act is about – and for Steps that tone was firmly established – the vocal combination of Claire, Faye, Lisa, H and Lee was, as Pete Waterman described it, „ABBA on speed‰. We thought itÊd be fun to take a listen back to the album and review it in a real-time track- by-track fashion 20 years later to see how the songs have stood the test of time⁄
Steptro Iconic from the start, ‘Steptro’ starts out as a pulsating heartbeat and wastes no time introducing those rave-y synths from “Last Thing On My Mind”. At just 57 seconds, it still manages to be “a moment”, and will likely still send shivers of nostalgia through the biggest Steps fans. We wouldn’t have minded a sequel to this on Steps’ comeback album ‘Tears on The Dancefloor’!
Last Thing On My Mind Despite being a cover of Bananarama’s #71charting 1992 single, “Last Thing On My Mind” will always be known as a Steps classic first and foremost. It was the song that switched many of us on to the five-piece, and was also the first time we heard each of the girls’ distinct voices on each verse, something that would become a pattern in their future as a band. The ‘90s production is certainly of that moment, and we doubt that magic could be re-created today. “Last Thing On My Mind” for us, is one of the most quintessential Steps singles – and should be brought back in full form on any future tour.
12
RELISTEN: STEP ONE RELEASED 14 SEP 1998 Steps very first single missed the top 10, and some would say it missed the mark altogether of what they should have sounded like as a band (Pete Waterman quickly fixed that recipe). With that being said, the song lingered in the charts and became a sleeper hit, and is arguably their most “obvious” hit besides “Tragedy”. The novelty linedance-meets-techno track is also notable for being the band’s only single to feature Lee on lead vocals, who ironically would take a back-seat vocally from their second single onwards. Much like the band themselves, we skipped this track for many years, but have made peace with it and realised that, without 5-6-7-8, there would be no Steps. But also, what a bit of harmless ‘90s fun when no-one took themselves too seriously!
One For Sorrow The song that made Steps a major player in the British (and European) pop music scene – and also the one that would divide relationships in the group, thanks to the majority of the track being sung by Claire, suggesting at least momentarily for some that she was the lead singer in a group that wasn’t intended to have a lead singer. It’s another stone-cold Steps
classic, and the “sad-banger” never goes out of fashion. In fact, “One For Sorrow” would go on to shape the band’s sound on future albums, with 2000’s “After The Love Has Gone” being cut from the same cloth, and almost sounding like a sequel. This would undoubtedly be one of the songs you’d play for someone today to introduce them to what Steps areabout.
Heartbeat While radio tended to snub Steps for the most part, their first proper ballad as a band, written by unknown songwriter Jackie James, was of a tempo and a style that allowed the group some airtime when it was released in 1999. While the song was certainly a change of pace from previous singles, it still followed the “a girl on each verse” formula, and allowed all three to shine vocally, showing critics that this was a pop act that could really sing. While “Tragedy” was obviously the more dominant side of this double A release, “Heartbeat” served its purpose well, and continues to be a vital moment during the band’s slower set on tour.
This Heart Will Love Again The first non-single we heard on the album as fans in 1998 was a mid-tempo, majestic ballad with obvious ABBA undertones, particularly in the chorus harmonies. Whether its the nostalgia talking or not, we’ll

Track Seven The first of two male-lead songs on their debut dramatically changes up the sonic landscape, with H fronting this undeniably melodic track that has somehow become the joke of Steps’ catalogue. We’re not entirely sure why A&R chose a song about losing your virginity to an older woman (and then had the group’s gay member sing lead!), but despite its bad reputation and the fact it’s a lesser representation of Steps signature sound, “Experienced” is not entirely a dud, but perhaps its best left in 1998 – we don’t think H would have quite the same conviction today!
Too Weak To Resist If anything, it’s “Too Weak To Resist” that’s the weaker of this middle section of ‘Step One’, which couldn’t be any more middle of the road if Gary Barlow had written it. In retrospect, we see that these tracks were an opportunity for H to shine, or possibly a vehicle for him to become a more dominant vocalist in the group, something that would later become a reality for a period on their second album’s later singles. If anything says “B-side” on this record, it’s this song – and it was the B-side to “One For Sorrow” – a better home for it in our opinion.
14
Better Best Forgotten This is the song that got our hearts racing upon our first listen-through of ‘Step One’, and at the time it was an obvious single. The title has become a pun, both in positive and negative lights for the band, but this gem will certainly never be forgotten by us. It returns the band to their ABBA-on-speed sound, with the final chorus sounding remarkably like the iconic Swedish four-piece, and was the perfect single to close-out their debut set. At this point in the band’s career, we had also established a blue-print – from the colour-schemes for each single to the ladies leading the verses – and it was a recipe for success with the single hitting #2 despite already being available on the album several months earlier.
Back To You Whilst less of an immediate sugar-rush than “Better Best Forgotten”, this song is a beautiful little slice of ‘90s bubble-gum pop – sweet, simple, and so catchy you’ll be humming it 20 years later! (And…here we are!) The production is nothing fancy at all, but w h e n you’ve got a

never know, but “This Heart Will Love Again” still sounds as good today as it did in September 1998! It was having a handful of this pace of song that allowed Steps to become more than just a hi-energy europop band – making them more wellrounded and giving their albums more depth – something that others who tried to emulate the band failed in achieving.

"As one of five Steps, I’m delighted to be the face of Diabetes UK’s 1 Million Step Challenge. It’s an event that anyone can get involved in; by walking, running or even dancing. Best of all, by completing one million steps between 1 July and 30 September, you can also raise money for Diabetes UK.
“He got through that and had seemed to be doing well in himself. He had gone back to work and was doing an active manual job too. “Some days he said he didn’t feel great but we had no idea he had a heart problem until he died. After we found out he had Type 2 diabetes I remember my mother cleared out the kitchen cupboards and made a huge effort to introduce healthier eating into their lives,” recalls Lee.
“Surprisingly, diabetes affects more people in the country than cancer and dementia combined. This is a subject close to my heart because I have seen first-hand the effects diabetes can have on the body; my grandfather, father and mother in law were all diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. Never underestimate the positive effect a healthy lifestyle can have on the body. Everyone has to start somewhere and, by taking part in the 1 Million Step challenge you’re not only taking that big first step towards a happier healthier life, you’re also joining me in supporting this great cause. And you’ll have some fun while you’re doing it." Whilst giving an interview to Express.co.uk about the campaign, Lee also spoke of his father Billy's death earlier in the year. Billy, who was 65 when he passed away, had battled a host of health problems over the years including diabetes, a stroke and early stage throat cancer four years ago.
“They both started to exercise a bit more, doing more walking and generally being more active. To tackle the diabetes my dad had to monitor his blood glucose levels every day and was encouraged to lose weight. “After a while though, because that approach stopped working, he had to take a daily Metformin tablet which gradually increased to four over the years.”
Lee’s mother-in-law Linda, who died in May this year, also suffered from the condition which now affects more than 3.7 million in the UK and it is believed a “Fortunately the cancer was picked up further 12.3 million are at risk of early and he had treatment which was developing the illness. successful,” explains Lee. https://www.diabetes.org.uk/Get_involved/Fundraising-events/million-step 21

CAN'T REWRITE HISTORY.... Throughout their amazing journey Steps have accomplished the massive achievement of releasing 26 singles selected from 5 amazing studio albums and one greatest hits compilation. The unmistakable piano melody and strong lead vocal from Claire cemented this track as a firm fan favourite from the albums initial release. LIGHT UP THE WORLD The first album of new recordings by Steps ten years! The onset of this album promised so much, however, with a reunion that despite an outwardly positive premise served to highlight the cracks and attitudes of some matters that despite the best of intentions had clearly not been resolved by the band. These simmering tensions alongside a manager whom admittedly came with good credentials clearly had no idea what to do with a group like Steps unfortunately caused the album to fall short. picking..... HISTORY IS MADE AT NIGHT – This song had potential to be on a similar playing field with Tragedy. A cover version, which as always, was significantly enhanced by their recording. The featuring of all band members on vocals helped to captivate listeners and make them be swept away into a fairytale of love and romance. It offered a warm hug to us all which in
my opinion was exactly what was needed to propel the album. The track like many others has established itself as somewhat of a fan favourite often discussed/mentioned on chat or message boards.

NO MORE TEARS ON THE DANCEFLOOR – What a track! This has many many clear references to classic Steps songs (Stomp, Better Best Forgotten, Deeper Shade Of Blue, One For Sorrow, You'llBe Sorry) whilst helping to establish and maintain the fabulous updated sound of Steps. Once again it's a track that shares its vocals amongst the group giving Lee and H a real chance to shine. The song offers us a perfect measure of seductive unadulterated pure campness scoring tens across the board! 23

resh from their huge Party on the Dancefloor arena tour, Steps were on the road again this summer playing castles, cricket grounds, and festivals. I had the pleasure of attending three of their shows; in Canterbury, Coventry and Greenwich. For those that didn’t catch the show, you missed out on the ultimate pop carnival in unexpected glorious weather. Opening the show with the apt Summer of Love, Steps swished across the stage wearing eyecatching glitter and bright magenta pink. The dancers waved pink flags while psychedelic flowers flashed across the screen. The crowd was in the party mood and Steps were on form feeding off the infectious energy, creating a parade on and off stage.

THREE STEPS FANS REVIEW THE SUMMER OF STEPS TOUR FROM DIFFERENT VIEW POINTS 25
REVIEW
For anyone who caught the winter arena tour, they picked out the highlights from that setlist and gave them a summer shake-up. The spooky caped Scared of the Dark intro was out, and the If You Could Read My Mind interlude was fabulously replaced by ABBA hit Voulez-Vous. A new edition came in the form of disco banger Glitter & Gold and naturally there was new choreography to follow. They heard the fans cries and brought back Say You’ll be Mine. But it had a country style rework following on suitably from 5,6,7,8.
Chain Reaction they emerged from behind hospital screens as doctors and nurses, paying homage to their 2001 music video. A personal favourite that gave me the “wow” factor was their encore costume of blue futuristic outfits with neon visors. For me it brings back one of my much-loved tour memories: the space-themed Deeper Shade of Blue on their Next Step tour.
After all these years they evidently still love to perform and the camaraderie within the band was a pleasure to watch. There were so many hilarious Stripped back staging calls for more moments like H staring at Lee for a few elaborate costumes, and the band seconds too long, prompting laugher once quoted as looking like “tropical between the pair. Or Claire missing the fruit” never disappoint. Not only was odd line because they had been joking there sequins, glitter, AND tassels, but for around so much. 26
In my view, I feel the ending was lacking the incredible wedding themed Tragedy, as it’s the best concert finale I’ve ever seen. But understandably a huge virtual wedding cake wouldn’t work on a smaller outdoor stage. With the band taking a short break I will be sad to not have an all colourful steps show in my life for a while. But I’m sure the next tour will be even more fabulous. To quote Lisa “until the next time”. Adel Hanily

here are bands that you love and have an allegiance with, and there are bands you ‘quite’ enjoy – you liked a few of their songs, maybe owned one album by them (or say, for instance, got the cassette out of the library when that was still a thing – yes I’m that old school) but you wouldn’t quite call yourself a fan.

OUR HEARTS BEAT AS ONE
I
In July I was very very fortunate to be able to see STEPS perform once again in their Summer Of STEPS shows. I was also extremely lucky tobe taking part in my second meet and greet with the band. As with my previous M&G I was flying solo. On the day of my show I was running around a bit like a headless chicken, having to work until midday, showering, making myself look presentable (which is no easy task!) before making the mad dash to travel to and find the venue. Once on thetrain I felt myself relax as it meant I’m on my way! Whilst on my journey I received some lovely, reassuring messages from one half of the fabulous duo that provide us with Ultimate STEPS.

Whilst melting in the extreme heat we chose to treat ourselves to a cocktail. During our brief moment of relaxation Ultimate STEPS spoke about another fan joining us. Again I could feel some nerves bubbling under the surface. As this fellow STEPS enthusiast joined us everything that was bubbling dissipated. I had once again been very honoured to meet someone whom I can say is truly fabulous and once more our shared passion for STEPS created a respect between us. Whilst Steps take some time off following a hugely successful 18 months, Claire is finally stepping out on her own. 32
I
t's the news some fans have been waiting for over 15 years, and whilst we all waited with baited breath for her to be announced for 2018's Strictly Come Dancing, Claire took us all surprise by announcing a solo single, album and tour! “It’s meant to be now. Everything has just fallen into place,” says Claire Richards of launching her solo career with the single On My Own and upcoming album My Wildest Dreams. “I’ve wanted to do a solo record for as long as I can remember, but if I’d tried before, I wouldn’t have been ready and the album wouldn’t have been as good as it is. I really know how to use my voice now and how to look after it – it’s like being an athlete, you have to exercise the muscle. And I really feel like I’ve earned my stripes now.” Richards’ fans would say that she’s earned her stripes several times over. She signed her first record deal 23 years ago and has achieved enormous success with Steps, racking up 14 Top Five hits, three Number One albums, a BRIT Award and 20 million record sales. The iconic pop group reunited for last year’s acclaimed Tears on the Dancefloor album, which debuted at Number Two, and a hugely popular 22-date sold out arena tour. But now, it’s time for Richards to step into the spotlight alone.
33
“We’ve just finished promoting and touring the Tears on the Dancefloor album and the plan was always to take a break so we could work on our own individual projects,” she explains. “That’s one of the things that makes Steps work now – we can go off and do our own thing, then come back together again. Everyone in the band has been really supportive about my solo album and it’s been really nice playing them my songs while we’ve been touring together. But I don’t think I want to see any of them at my solo shows because it would make me too nervous – they can hide at the back!” Preven (Katy Perry, Leona Lewis) and Richards actually began working on My Mat Rad (One Direction, Olly Murs).
“It’s meant to be now. Everything has just fallen into place”
Wildest Dreams around three years ago when Steps were planning their 20th anniversary tour. She’d recorded the rousing but realistic relationship ballad End Before We Start and realised, “That’s what my solo record needs to be.” So she began gathering tracks for the album written by top pop songwriters including Richard “Biff” Stannard (Spice Girls, Kylie Minogue), Steve Anderson (Britney Spears, Kylie Minogue), Cutfather (Christina Aguilera, Pussycat Dolls), Anne 34
Along the way, she recorded an emotional epic song called Don’t Leave Me In This Love Alone, which is unmistakably the handiwork of power ballad queen Diane Warren. Richards gives the song the mighty vocal performance it deserves, and says recording it was “a real bucket list moment”.
.
Richards says every song on the album is one she’s really connected with. “Because Steps is a very specific type of pop music, I was never going to chase that sound as a solo artist. And I’m not a kid any more so it would have been weird if I was standing on stage and singing about going out clubbing. This is definitely a pop album, but I wanted the lyrics to make sense for a woman of my age who’s a mother and a wife. I wanted the songs to mean something, and for every song to have a reason to be on there. The album takes you from being empowered to being thoughtful to being sad to being elated. I just wanted to make a really good pop album that people would want to listen to from start to finish.” During the recording process, the empowering pop anthem On My Own established itself as the perfect lead single. “But in my darkest hour, I found my inner power, and life is mine for the taking,” Richards sings stirringly in her instantly recognisable voice which a generation of pop fans grew up with. Richards explains that “the song is about getting to a point in life where you’re confident and happy about being where you are. And that’s totally where I am now. Back in the day, I wouldn’t have said boo to a goose. It was easy for me to be in a band because I could hide behind everyone else.”
because of what people would think of me. Now I know that if you feel strongly about something, you have to speak up. I couldn’t have made this album without saying yes and no to what I felt was right for me and for the music.”
Richards says she’s also drawn strength from the success of the last Steps tour. “Back in the day, we never sang a two-hour show completely live, but now we do. Knowing that I can do that night after night for 22 shows on an arena tour is a massive confidence boost. I really feel like, ‘Yes! I can do this!””
Richards is now preparing to remind us of her vocal talents again with a series of intimate live shows supporting the album. “I don’t think I’ve ever been as happy as I am now, both in my personal life and my work life,” she says with a This newfound confidence can be smile. “I’m excited to get out there and heard in the track Brave which Claire just be me.” personally co-wrote with Jez Ashurst and Rachel Furner (Little Mix, Ella Henderson). STORY OF A SONG 38
S
omeone (that I didn't know) emailed me on a Friday afternoon and asked if I had a song for a group for which they needed songs. He didn't mention the band name; he just included 2 YouTube links (but again, the band name wasn't included in the http link.) As a professional songwriter, I get song requests from a lot from people I don't know and for artists I don't know. Usually, it's artists no one has ever heard of. I figured this was another one of those cases, and it was a Friday afternoon, so I held off on clicking the links or following up. But then on Monday, I thought, "Well, let me check that act out." I was shocked when I clicked on the links and saw they were of Steps' "Scared of the Dark" and "Story of a Heart" (which was already one of my favorite songs of the year). In fact, "Tears on the Dancefloor" was already my favorite album of the year, before I ever knew I'd be asked to submit additional songs for its expanded edition or actually have a song included.
Songwriter Gordon Pogoda writes for JLTFT, giving us the inside on story on his song 'Beautiful Battledfield' and how he came to work with Steps
Whether you're in the music business or not, can you imagine having a favorite album of the year by mid-year, only to find out later you'd have a song added to it! It's crazy, unbelievable and a great feeling. But as I clicked on the link, my first thought was, "I can't believe this person writing to me didn't even tell me this was for the band Steps". I'd been a fan for 20 years. I would have clicked on those links in a second! The person writing me knew me for 19 years, but I didn't recognise his name, and as it turns out, I didn't know him at all. I had sent songs to an associate of his 19 years earlier, and he'd heard them and remembered my name and the songs I sent. Over the years, he apparently followed my career. So when Steps' management asked him to help find some good pop songs, he reached out to me. I'd initially assumed they wanted songs for the next full album already; I had no idea it was for the deluxe version. 39
The irony in all this is that so many times I try so hard to get songs to a specific artist, but the cut never comes to fruition with that artist. In this case, I wasn't trying to reach out to Steps' team at all; they reached out to me and everything just fell into place.
Q&A
I submitted songs that I'd already written and I felt were in Steps' vein, though in the end, I was told that none were quite right. Then I started writing songs with Steps in mind, plus I did a somewhat altered mix of a song I already had from the previous year, "Beautiful Battlefield" (and did the new mix with Steps in mind), and that was the one they chose.
Gordon answered many questions pose
Q: How did you come up with the words to 'Beautiful Battlefield'?
A: It was a title I had sitting around in my head for a long time, maybe over a year. thought it was an unusual way to describe a battlefield - because a battlefield is never beautiful. Then (about a year later), was working on a chorus melody at the piano and I realised this title fit in well, so decided to use it and build a storyline around it. I felt the only way there could be a beautiful battlefield is if it was about a couple (or family or group) that fight a lo but realize in the end that they are better together. Then I showed my chorus to my co-writers Gloria Sklerov and Dave Chamberlin, and we wrote the rest of the song.
Q: Can you tell us what inspired the music?
A: This might surprise people, but when was writing the chorus melody, I was inspired by the music of the band OneRepublic and its leader Ryan Tedder No song in particular. His melodies just ge me. But it was only the chorus section tha was inspired by him. After that, it was just a matter of my co-writers Gloria, David and trying to write a good song. When it was time to record the demo ... well, I love Rachel Platten's "Fight Song" so the demo started out kind of with a similar feel, with marching-band snare drums, etc.. (Although, oddly enough, I didn't even make the connection .... between "Fight" and "Battlefield" ... until after the demo was complete.) But then, before the final demo was complete, it had suddenly hit me that the song could work well as a Steps song (ala a midtempo song like "Story of a Heart") so next we did a semi-major overhaul to the track. We removed the marching-band snare drums, we raised the strings, and said to my co-writers, "We've got to blas the harmonies much louder than where they're at" - because at this point in time, knew I was going to submit the song to

Steps, and I felt the recording should be very harmony driven - in that Steps and ABBA type of way.
Q: Are the lyric about Steps' story? A: About a week before I sent in the song to Steps, a co-writer of mine (though not a cowriter of "BB") had seen on YouTube an episode or a show about Steps and their break up and getting back together. He knew "BB" and pointed out to me how much the lyrics in the song are like the story of Steps. This was just an amazing coincidence, and I feel sometimes things just fall into place the right way. And when I sent the song in, I thought for a second that maybe I'd point out that the lyric in the song just happens to match the story of what Steps went through. But then I decided not to say anything, and I'd let the song speak for itself. (I like when songs have different meanings for different people, and maybe this is one of those songs.) So maybe when Steps heard it, it was something they could personally relate to. But it's funny/ironic that we'd initially write a song, without knowing where it would wind up, and it would end up going to a group whose story was very much reflected in the song. Crazy.
"A battlefield is never beautiful"
g ), o d I st e I o
Q: Does all your writing stem from personal experiences? A: No, actually, most times it doesn't. I write what I feel (musically), and I try to write a good song, but usually I just pick a topic and idea and go from there.
Q: I absolutely love Beautiful Battlefield. It is simply stunning and Steps sing it so well. Are the lyrics based on a situation you have been in yourself, or is it based around a specific story? A: The lyrics aren't based on my life, but it's just something I feel a lot of people go through. There are so many stories‌ on TV and in film as well as real life ‌ where couples (or families) are fighting a lot or go through crises, then make up and realize they're better in the end. I guess that I, along with my co-writers, were trying to encapsulate that in a song.
Q: How was the process of it being chosen by Steps/management as one of their five new tracks in the Deluxe version, Gordon? Did you have other artists in mind specifically for this song before Steps came to the occasion? Or maybe initially you would want a solo artist to sing this song instead of a group? What was the thought process like? A: I'm not sure I understand your first question. But if I understand correctly, it was first heard by management, and they really liked it and then showed it to Steps. When writing the song, I wasn't thinking of it in terms of it being for a solo artist or group. We were just trying to write a song that had feeling. We didn't have Steps in mind when we wrote the song, but I will say this: We had Steps in mind during the very tail end of the production (specifically, the last day, when we decided to convert it from a Rachel Platten type of production to a Steps type of production!) As far as it being chosen as one of the five new tracks, I was thrilled. I've been a fan of Steps for 20 years.

Tears On The Dancefloor: The Singles Collection 4xCD / 27th July 2018
Disc 1 On Scared Of The Dark, 7th Heaven provide a full on dance mix you can bet your Baby Don’t Dance CD single will be played at least once in every gay bar on a Saturday night! An acoustic version highlights that underneath the big production, costumes and dance routines lie hugely talented singers and credible mature pop songs. Wideboys give us three takes from classic house to electro to club and Porl Young then takes buzz single You Make Me Whole to full club banger!
Disc 2 Story Of A Heart gets the inevitable 7th Heaven treatment, making it club ready but keeping the original essence of the track. Cutmore’s take turns it into a cool piano led house track, perfect for a summer evening (maybe whilst chilling in the September Sun ). Rescue Rangerz provide their club version of the dance-pop Glitter & Gold while Ste Ingham’s Firefly mix takes the track to the next level (when the last chorus kicks in, turn up your stereo!).

When Steps reunited at G-A-Y for New Year 2017 no Steps fan could have predicted what was to come. A year and a half later we have been showered with all things Steps, from Gold certified album ‘Tears On The Dancefloor’ and the reissue ‘Crying At The Disco Deluxe Edition’; four singles complete with fantastic videos, a ton of remixes and those all important dance routines; and two massive tours plus a live album. However, even after all of that, still there was one thing missing: CD singles! And as they always do, Steps listened! And now we can place our copies of ‘The Singles Collection’ alongside original CD single releases such as 5, 6, 7, 8, Chain Reaction and Summer Of Love. The most exciting thing about this reunion is how Steps continue to go above and beyond showing a genuine passion for what they do, their friendship with one another and their love and appreciation of their fans. And ‘The Singles Collection’ is no exception. With a 4 CD, 44 track collection, with over 3 hours of mixes, this rounds
Disc 3 7th Heaven and Adam Turner take on Neon Blue, both doing an equally great job. It’s hard to favor one above the other, however 7th Heaven’s electronic video game-esque bleeps may just push it ahead due to that 90s nostalgia! Club Junkies work their magic on Happy turning it into one of the strongest tracks on the collection (it’s just fantastic... no more left to say!). Porl Young appears once again taking on I Will Love Again creating a mix as big as those power-house vocals!
Disc 4 off what has been an amazing comeback! Each disc comprises of the 7th Heaven mixes of each single which have become a Steps staple akin to the W.I.P. and Sleaze Sisters mixes of the 90s, along with additional full length club mixes, radio versions and dub mixes, many of which are previously unreleased. Not only that, almost every album track appears on the collection in remixed form. Remixes have always been a huge part of Steps’s music as seen in 2016’s ‘Stop All Night - The Remix Anthology’ and ’The Singles Collection’ is most certainly not short of them! Although this collection may not appeal to the casual fan (there’s a scaled down digital EP for that), for die hard fans this comprehensive signed limited edition box set is a must have. For myself and many other fans we could not be happier for this release! Thank you Steps, can’t wait for the next one...
Dancing With A Broken Heart gives us the fantastic electronic 7th Heaven mix and Nathan Jain provides us with a mix that sounds so current that it could stand equally among many of today’s chart hits. The club mix also includes Lee’s part which was omitted from the original single release and is exclusive to this collection (and the mix sounds so much better for it being included too!). Club Junkies transform mid tempo ballad Space Between Us to dance floor filler, again excelling themselves on the full length club mix. Finally co-writer Gordon Pogoda gives us his reimagining of Beautiful Battlefield to round off this fantastic collection and this new
