Student Handbook 2014
Introduction The Student Union is the official representative body for students attending Regent’s University London. All enrolled students of the University are automatically members of the Student Union. It is our aim to operate in a fair and democratic manner and to promote the welfare of all students. We act as a channel of communication between students and the institution, providing student representation for relevant university committees and meetings. The Student Union encourages and supports student run societies, sports, academic and social activities. If you would like to start a new society the Student Union can provide financial support as well as guidance. Our office is located in the ground floor of Acland Building, in room A010. Feel free to come and see us in our office or you can get in touch with us via phone or email.

Message from the Student Union We are here to ensure you receive a quality student experience throughout your studies.
Dear Fellow Student, We would like to welcome you to London, and most importantly welcome you to the Regent’s community. The Student Union’s main goals are to support the student body as a whole, make sure your voice is heard and to organise academic and social events so that you can make the most out of your time at Regent’s, both on and off campus. Our ultimate goal is to engage you with the community and provide you with any tools necessary in order to maximise your potential towards acquiring your qualification – which will play a vital role in building your own career and future. A strong Student Union is composed by students who advocate and care about their everyday life at university and want to get involved in different areas of the organisation. A great way of being involved within the institution is by taking part in the events and activities. There are many ways to get involved in the Student Union or Student Council. If you are interested in joining or starting up a society, or pursuing one of your dream projects, please do not hesitate getting in touch with us via email, phone or simply by visiting us in our office. Once again, welcome, and we hope to see and hear from you soon! Best regards, Gilmar Queiros Regent’s University London Student Union President

Want to get involved? We are always looking for enthusiastic students who would like to be a part of our team. Joining the Student Union is a great way to get involved with extra-curricular activities. Working with us provides numerous opportunities to gain new skills or to build on your current skills set. The Student Union gives a better understanding of the University and gives you the opportunity to have a voice and an influence in the decision-making. It is the place to meet new people and to make new friends. There are various options if you want to get involved. You can join or set up a society, apply to become a student representative or officer in the School Councils, or become a member of the Student Union Executive Team. The Student Union Executive Team is appointed through an election based system either on an annual basis or at the end of the each term. It is possible however to become a representative for your school’s Council throughout the term. If you would like to be involved with the University’s sports teams please contact Renee Fontaine in the gym, which is located in the basement of Darwin building. For more information or to apply for any positions contact the Student Union or your School Council.
Throughout the term the Student Union organises various events, such as society fairs and social activities. All student events are advertised through Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and the intranet as well as posters located strategically around campus.
Societies The Student Union encourages students to join existing, or to establish new societies. Once a society has met the necessary requirements to become one of the official Regent’s University London Student Union Societies, it gains access to support, guidance and potential funding from the Student Union. For a new society to become official, it must have a minimum of six founding members and is required to submit a written constitution as well as budget provision for the term. Societies are entitled to renew their activity status upon the initiation of each term, together with the proposed expenditure of the allocated budget. To learn more about the societies and what they have to offer, students are recommended to attend a Freshers’ Fair at the beginning of term.
Events The Student Bar The Student Bar is open during term time Monday-Friday serving refreshments and food. For more detailed information about the opening times for the bar, please see the intranet or speak to the bar staff. Events are regularly organised by the Student Union in the Student Bar, such as Graffiti Night, Beach Party, Neon Party and Oktoberfest. Nightclubs Exclusive club events are organised throughout the term for Regent’s students. At the beginning of each term a Fresher’s Party and a Welcome Back Party is held. Additionally, we hold regular club night events.
Further details can be found in the events guide, however the usual London club rules apply. Smart dress will be expected, no trainers, and the management retains the right to refuse entry. Age I.D and Regent’s I.D may also be required, specific details will be outlined with each club and guest list. Other events There are numerous events happening at the University organised by not only the Student Union, but also by societies, Alumni, Careers and other members of staff. We all work closely together to ensure that there are a variety of activities and events organised to cater for students with different interests. The Annual General Meeting run by the Student Union is held during the Spring Term, where all students are invited to voice their opinions and share their ideas.
All student events are advertised through Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, The Intranet as well as posters located strategically around campus.
