FAMILY BUSINESS PATHWAY The global economy is dominated by family businesses, which generate most of the world’s economic output and wealth. In some regions, family companies virtually control the economy. But while such businesses are often strong market competitors, they can be vulnerable in terms of succession – many do not last beyond the second or third generation.

What are the aims of the degree? The Family Business pathway is a new programme which explores the leadership, succession planning, management, family, career and personal issues found in family-owned and managed companies. If you are a member of a family business, you may have witnessed the ambiguous, charged and often challenging issues involved at first hand. Eighty per cent of the world’s businesses are family-owned, but the ability to regenerate and revitalise a family business is important if it is to continue to grow, or to thrive into subsequent generations of family ownership. Only a third of family companies pass successfully from the founder generation into the second generation, and very few remain viable into the third generation. Revitalisation, family conflicts, succession plans and growth tend to occur through periods of diversification in which new products, services or markets are introduced to replace former ones which are no longer doing so well. Special attention is given to family dynamics, leadership in family business strategies and options for achieving growth and sustainability.

This pathway will enhance your understanding of a range of concepts and theories associated with the changing global business environment, management and leadership and its impact on markets, organisations and people. You will learn about the significance of people-management decisions in a global context, and discover how to formulate and implement management and leadership strategies that will contribute to organisational growth and sustainability in a global economy.

IBM Universities Business Challenge The IBM Universities Business Challenge (IBM UBC) is a key part of our strategy to increase business acumen and employability skills among our students. The challenge, in which teams of students work as management consultants to a series of simulated companies, is fiercely competitive. Participation is highly regarded by prospective employers nationally and internationally. We have a long history of entering teams into

the IBM UBC. Since 2001 College teams have featured in nine semi-finals including three finals.

Winning the International Collegiate Business Strategy Competition in 2010 in both categories (best annual report and best overall performance) was my main achievement during my time at Regent’s Business School London. I learnt to work in a team and got to know my team-mates really well. I was very happy with the team and the outcome of the competition – it was the perfect combination of hard work and great fun. I feel that the competition definitely brought all my theoretical knowledge into practice. Maria Katunina (aka Mash) / Russia MA Global Management (Finance) International Collegiate Business Strategy Competition Team Captain / Graduate

International Collegiate Business Strategy Competition Each spring, universities from all over the world participate in the International Collegiate Business Strategy Competition (ICBSC), the world’s longest-running, most comprehensive business strategy competition. Since 2007, the College has twice been crowned world graduate champions, including best performances and best annual reports in the competition. In the ICBSC, each university team takes over the management of a simulated or virtual manufacturing company, competing directly against other firms run by competitor teams in its simulated world. The simulated environment incorporates the economies of two countries and requires consideration of global and domestic strategy. Each team writes a strategic business plan for its company and assumes responsibility for executing that plan through making key strategic and operational decisions in marketing, finance, HR, production and operations. Students develop skills in teamworking, time-management, working under acute time pressure, forecasting, planning, applying theory to practical problems, completing factual annual reports, giving presentations and answering questions in front of senior business executives (who serve as the simulated Board of Directors).

Transferring to RBSL in 2010 was one of the best decisions I have made in my life. The School is truly international – you get the opportunity to network with people from all over the world – the location is wonderful, and the learning experience is not limited to traditional academic learning but also includes ‘out of class’ learning, where you learn from other students and their cultures. I can highly recommend the School to anyone who wishes to experience something different. Kristine Bakk / Norway BA Global Management with pathways / Level 2
