Whether you are here for a short time - on an English language course, a foundation programme or a study abroad period – or are here for full degree programme, you are now part of the Regent’s family and we hope that this will help you for your entire career and beyond. We are a unique university on a very special site and as we have grown we have extended the campus into the exciting and prestigious Marylebone Village. Close by, the beating heart of the West End provides everything you need for your day life and nightlife; in fact the very best of London life is all around you. At our London campus, the immediate environment and the city beyond provide a rich extension of the classroom. We attract very special students who go on to make a very real mark in the world we live in. Our community is truly international. At Regent’s we have students from more than 140 nationalities. This provides a cultural richness without boundaries that exchanges perspectives, shares experiences and promotes dialogue. When you leave us, you’ll know who you are and be able to perform confidently anywhere in the world. But that’s not all: while at Regent’s, you’ll build a network and friendships that will equip you to dare just a little bit more in your life’s ambitions. Regent’s University London provides a world of difference, and we’ll make a world of difference to your future, bringing your dreams as well as your goals just a little bit closer. I hope that you will work hard while here, enjoy the company of your fellow students, explore London, have a terrific social life and keep in touch forever through our alumni groups. I look forward to meeting many of you during your time with us. Prof. Aldwyn Cooper Vice Chancellor

Find accommodation If you need accommodation then you should first contact our Accommodation Office – full details of what they offer can be found in the Key Services for Student section of this guide (page 22). Council Tax Council tax is a tax applied to residential properties in England, Wales and Scotland and is collected by local authorities. In almost all cases, full-time students do not have to pay but do need to request council tax exemption. To request this exemption you will need to visit Student Registry or email studentregistry@regents.ac.uk with the details of the council you are applying to. You will then be provided with a letter confirming your details which can be sent by post or collected in person. Join a UK bank If you have do not have a UK bank account, it is sensible to do some research and find out what is the best account for you as soon as possible. Some of the questions you may want to ask the bank are: –– –– –– –– –– –– ––

Do they offer any special student accounts? What documents you will need to open the account? How long it will take to open and access the account? What type of cash machine card will you receive? Do you have to pay for any services? Will you be charged for going overdrawn? Can you deposit money immediately?

The bank may want proof you are a student. To provide this please contact the Student Registry with your chosen bank’s name and address and they will prepare a reference letter which will act as proof of your student status. Please note a bank reference letter can only be provided once you have completed your enrolment and you must allow 24 hours for this request to be completed. Please note if the duration of your course is less than 12 months it might not be possible for you to open a bank account in the UK. Register with the Police Certain students are required to register with the police if that requirement is stamped in their passport. If the UK Entry Clearance (‘visa’) in your passport or on your identity card contains the statement: ‘The holder is also required to register at once with the police’ or ‘Register with police within seven days’, you should register as soon as possible. Please contact Student Services if you need assistance with this.

9

Register with a doctor Medical treatment in the UK is free to all European Union (EU) citizens and full-time students studying for more than six months. However, to gain your entitlement it is vital that you register with a local NHS doctor. Student Services can help you with this process. NHS Direct NHS Direct is a service used for non-urgent health care information, advice and services. Call 111 or visit the website for further details. www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk All students must pay for ophthalmic and dental care on the NHS. For further information, registration and health services in your area please see the NHS website. www.nhs.uk Accident and emergency treatment All EU /non-EU citizens resident in the UK are entitled to receive accident and emergency hospital care free of charge, although some non-EU citizens may be charged for treatment of pre-existing conditions. The nearest NHS Accident & Emergency Department is at University College London Hospital on Euston Road. To contact emergency call 999. If calling on campus please also then let reception know the emergency services have been called.

10

Get Medical Insurance Even though you may be covered for some services from the UK’s National Health Service (NHS), the University recommends all students to take out appropriate medical insurance to cover any medical expenses that occur in the UK and abroad. International students who are studying at the University for less than six months must take out medical insurance, as they will not be covered for any required treatment otherwise. Travel insurance You should also take out travel insurance to cover you until you arrive at University and for any excursions you decide to go on, both during and after your stay with us. Contacting Emergency services Regent’s University’s local Neighbourhood Policing Team is Regent’s Park and Primrose Hill and they can be contacted on 020 7161 9701. Call 999 if you need urgent assistance from the emergency services (police, fire or ambulance). Disability If you have not already told us about a disability or support need during the application process, please contact the Disability Officer as soon as possible. Any special arrangements for examinations, such as extra time, must be confirmed within three weeks of your classes starting. Further information can be found on the intranet or under the ‘Disability information’ section of this guide. National Union of Students Card (NUS) University ID is usually accepted across London to prove your student status and get discounts at cinemas, shops, museums etc. However, it is still worth getting an NUS card and an ISIC card if you plan to travel outside the UK. NUS Extra is the definitive student discount card with a range of exclusive discounts, offers and competitions designed to make student life more exciting, more memorable and more rewarding. NUS Extra costs just £10 and is valid for one academic year (from September to August). Order your card online at the website below. It will take three to four weeks to be printed and will be posted to Student Services, where you can collect it. www.nus.org.uk/en/nus-extra

11

Safety & Security Your safety and security is important to us and we provide 24-hour security cover at the campus. –– Security staff are trained in first aid –– Security staff are available to escort you to and from campus to the Outer Circle after dark Security on Campus All main entry points to the University are protected by ID card systems and you will need to individually swipe in and out each time you enter campus. It is always a good idea to carry your ID card around with you while on campus. If you lose your ID, you can get a replacement from the main reception for a fee of £10. Cabs & Taxis In London there are many unlicensed and unmarked taxis. Avoid these as they are illegal and unsafe and always try to get in Black Cab. If possible, try to book a taxi in advance from a well-known firm or use Cabwise which can send you taxi phone numbers and locations of the nearest taxi ranks. On campus the main reception can book a licensed taxi for you. www.tfl.gov.uk/cabwise Pickpocketing Always keep your valuables out of sight when travelling around London. Try to be aware of who is around you when using your mobile phone and keep it out of sight if unsure. Do not leave your possessions unattended when in a bar, restaurant or club. Police If you are a victim of crime, you should report it to the police immediately. They will give you a crime reference number that you can give to your bank or insurance company as appropriate. If you need support, the police can advise you who to contact or you can talk to a counsellor based on campus.

London Travel with 18+ Oyster Card Please note you must be a full time student to apply for an 18+ Oyster card: your course must last at least 14 weeks and you must have at least 15 hours per week tuition-led learning hours. For a more detailed definition please see the Oyster terms and conditions on their website. www.tfl.gov.uk/tickets/14312.aspx If you meet the above criteria, here are the steps you need to follow: –– Register for your Regent’s University London course online before you apply for the Oyster card: if you do not do this we will not be able to verify that you are a student and so your Oyster application will be rejected. –– Go to www.tfl.gov.uk/photocard and enter Regent’s University to find us and complete the application form. You will need to upload a photograph of yourself too. –– Visit Student Services on campus with a valid ID card so that they can confirm with Oyster that you are an eligible student. Oyster will then post you a card. Your card should arrive in a week. Barclays cycle hire For short journeys, a bike is a great alternative to the bus or tube. There is a docking station for Barclays cycle hire at the entrance to Regent’s Park, less than five minutes from the University. The scheme, which operates London-wide, does not require you to pre-book. You can become a member online or simply pay for a cycle at a docking station, ride it and return it. www.tfl.gov.uk/roadusers/cycling/14808.aspx Cabs and taxis London’s official taxis (black cabs) can be hailed in the street or at designated ranks situated in prominent places, including many mainline rail, Tube and bus stations. If the yellow TAXI sign at the front is illuminated, the cab is available for hire. Fares are metered and there is a minimum charge of £2.40. Many black cabs accept payment by credit or debit card but check with the driver before the trip starts. Card payments attract additional charges. To be safe you should always use a registered cab – more information can be found in the Safety & Security” section of this guide, and note from campus our main reception can also call a cab for you.
