Žarniću i doc.

Architectural and urban planning models serve to compress space and volume to a perceptible scale, both of already constructed areas and buildings, and also of still conceptual projects that exist only in drawings.

REDUCTION —— Architectural and Urban Planning models

Traditionally, models are associated with presentations of architectural projects, but their application is much wider: from industrial models showing high-tech plant, via archaeological, historical and natural landscape depictions, to movie sets. The experience of space is a multi-sensory process which can be most faithfully and suitably conveyed through a model. The model does not have to be sensed only visually and tactilely, but also olfactorily. This exhibition vividly displays different approaches to model making, different scales, scopes, materials, levels of detail, all for the purpose of transferring architectural thoughts and concepts into space for the first time. The strength of architectural models is not in copying the reality and behaviour of materials but in their reduction to the essential. The greatest strength of an expertly crafted model lies in the direct connection brain-hand-material. The creative interpretation of forms and materials allows the model maker to convey not only the form, but also the ideas embedded in the project. There is a whole range of creative approaches that allow the model to be formed in such a way that it transmits the most important components of a work, without burdening the observer with the unessential. While computer simulations serve to imitate reality, models primarily serve to communicate the basic conceptual ideas, transferring architectural and urban design thinking into actual space. This communication works in both directions as the material, though the movement of the hand, gives feedback to the brain. This allows the designer to learn something new from the model.

REDUCTION — Architectural and Urban Planning Models

The Architectural and Urban Planning Models Section ——

The section gathers together members who are active in the specific artistic practice of depicting space in a reduced scale. Modellers have been involved in the work of ULUPUH from the very beginning, when Vanja Milić and Ivica Turčić worked with Vjenceslav Richter, and were later joined by Boro Kovačević who formed a new independent section. Section members have from the outset worked not only on the local, but also the global and especially western European scene. The greatest challenges for the section today come from various directions. Models used to be an indispensable part of the equipment for architectural and urban design competition works, and today are a forbidden —“seductive and expensive”— extra in competitions. This is a drawback for non-experts who have difficulty in perceiving space from drawings. The depiction of space is mainly directed to visual reality and three-dimensional representations. Such virtual forming of models (in many ways related to the physical) has been recognised and has been incorporated in the section. The section promotes the idea of introducing a requirement for first-prize-winning works to be presented to the public in the form of a model in an appropriate scale before the beginning of construction. This would make communication more successful between designers and the public, who have the right to information (in an appropriate medium, i.e. a model) as to how public space will be formed and how taxpayers’ money will be spent. Great hope for the continuation of the modelling tradition can be found in the establishment of a modelling workshop at the Faculty of Architecture, and can be seen in the excellent student works displayed in the exhibition in collaboration with the Faculty. We are especially grateful to professors Koružnjak, Pleština and Žarnić, and assistant professor Mišković for their cooperation. These works show that there is nothing to fear for the future of modelling in Croatia. Galerija ULUPUH / ULUPUH Gallery
