Ekstrava­ gantne banalnosti Od običnoga i svakodnevnoga do umjetnički unikatnoga, ekskluzivnoga i ekstravagantnoga Višnja Slavica Gabout

Ekstravagantnost je u umjetnosti, osobito onoj modernoj i suvremenoj, oduvijek bila karakteristika kreativnih i maštovitih autorskih osobnosti. Osobnosti koje ne mare za norme, odmiču se od ustaljenoga i konvencionalnoga, nadilaze granice svakodnevnoga i očekivanoga, pa se dotiču ekskluzivnoga i iznimnoga – ali i provokativnoga, bizarnoga i ekscentričnoga. Ekstravagantno se u osnovi odnosi na sve što je neobično, čudno i izazovno. U novije vrijeme međutim, značenje ovoga pojma se uslojilo, a hermeneutički okvir proširio, pa se u kontekstu novih paradigmi ekstravagantnost iščitava kao nešto izuzetno i čudesno; izvanserijski unikatno i visokovrijedno; zanimljivo i nekonvencionalno; ludički maštovito i duhovito. Već su se Marcel Duchamp, dadaisti i nadrealisti, a ponajviše pop-artisti, poigrali ovim značenjem, vežući ekstravagantnost uz njezinu suprotnost – banalnost. Pretvarajući, promjenom konteksta, obično, svakodnevno, trivijalno i serijski uniformirano, u ekskluzivno i umjetnički visokovrijedno. U ekstravagantno. Uveli su tako jednu novu estetiku i novi vizualni sustav, koji je uzdigao svakodnevne, banalne, uporabne i odbačene (trash) predmete na razinu ekstravagantnih umjetničkih objekata visoke kvalitete.

Premda je pop-art već odavno pospremljen u povijest moderne umjetnosti, budući su njegovi zvjezdani trenuci prohujali pedesetih i šezdesetih godina prošloga stoljeća, on ipak za sobom nije izbrisao tragove, već ih je ostavio vidljivima, pa njima – u zavisnosti od vremena, prostora, autorskih izričaja i društvenih prilika, na svoj način koračaju umjetnici i danas. Njegova komunikativnost, otvorenost, nekonvencionalnost i karakteristična ironična duhovitost zadržali su za autore i u suvremenosti neodoljivu privlačnost, pokazavši kako je popartistički idiom, sa svojim temama i sadržajima, kao i sa svojom naklonjenošću ironiji, cinizmu i provokaciji – ali i humoru, adaptibilan autorskim individualnostima različitog diskursa. Adaptibilan i sadašnjem vremenu, kao i aktualnim temama i narativima suvremene umjetnosti. Mlada generacija suvremenih umjetnika zato je osamdesetih i devedesetih godina 20. stoljeća oživjela popartistički stilski idiom, (re)definirala ga u duhu suvremene umjetnosti i nazvala neo (ili post) popart. On ima onu svježinu, neposrednost i svojevrsnu drskost karakterističnu za pop-art, ali je sad prilagođen trenutku, s drukčijom semiotikom te s kritičkim i aktivističkim diskursom prema društvu i svakodnevici. Ono što je bila i ostala konstanta, to je inspiracija predmetima i


sadržajima svakodnevice te otvorenost, komunikativnost, demokratičnost i pristupačnost. Ono što je drukčije, to je okrenutost individualnosti i individualnim interpretacijama u popartističkom duhu, a nalazimo ih ne samo u vizualnim umjetnostima, nego i u dizajnu, unutarnjem uređenju, modi – i nakitu. Pop-art i njegov stilski idiom bili su i Sekciji za oblikovanje plemenitih kovina i umjetničkog nakita ULUPUH-a inspiracija za koncepciju i realizaciju izložbe „Ekstravagantne banalnosti“. U svojim nakitnim skulpturama i objektima, kao i nosivim nakitnim instalacijama autori tu kreativno slijede s jedne strane strategije i prakse u suvremenoj umjetnosti, posebno suvremenoj skulpturi, dok s druge strane dohvaćaju beskrajnu slobodu popartističkog izražavanja. Pritom se poigravaju maštovitom kombinatorikom pretvorba i metamorfoza (konteksta, zbilje, uporabnoga-neuporabnoga, funkcije-disfunkcije, realnoga-irealnoga, trivijalnoga-ekskluzivnoga), stvarajući od svijeta stvarnosti svijet fantazmagoričkih, ludičkih priča, u kojem i oni mali i oni nevažni predmeti imaju važnost monumenata. Svijet gdje su plemeniti materijali združeni s neplemenitima – nelikovnima, pronađenima, ready-made, potrošnima, organskima, čak jestivima,

pa se odnos jeftinoga i dragocjenoga postavlja u nove vrijednosne okvire, ulazeći u područje umjetnosti. U ovom slučaju, u područje suvremene skulpture, koja se tu veže uz ljudsko tijelo i pritom odašilje zanimljive autorske priče, nekad u svojoj podlozi noseći elemente ironije (Gross, Bellante, Naerlović), nekad bizarnosti (Krušelj, Vitez, E. Lumezi), a nekad neočekivane duhovitosti (Šuk, Petrinjak, Podnarčuk). Ove popartističke nakitne skulpture izazivaju posebnu pozornost zato što su stalni „pokretni objekt“ i stalna „pokretna instalacija“, pa sve djeluje promjenjivo u vremenu i prostoru; performerski. A uz to i izrazito nekonvencionalno, provokativno, „otkačeno“ – i ekstravagantno, jer su elementi „instalacija“ i objekata naizgled inkompatibilni i u kontrapunktu, ali harmonizirani i estetski usklađeni. Valja tu napomenuti kako je stvaralaštvo jednog od velikana pop-arta, Claesa Oldenburga – njegove skulpture naopakih položaja, poremećenih dimenzija (malo je veliko – i obrnuto) i kontradiktorne haptičnosti (soft sculpture), upravo zbog svoje popartističke kiparske komunikacije grupi umjetnika s ove izložbe bilo inspiracija. Zato se pojavljuju kao duhovita asocijacija na Oldenburga u radovima Nearlović, Odrčić, Podnarčuk i Petrinjak.

Pop-art je do današnjih dana širokoj publici ostao blizak jer koristi iz svima znanog repertoara razumljivi vizualni rječnik. Zato i razgovor s publikom nikad tu nije s distance, nego predstavlja otvoreni dijalog. Dijalog kakav vode i radovi autora izložbe „Ekstravagantne banalnosti“. Radovi koji međutim, unatoč raspričanosti, nadilaze banalnost i djeluju poetično, bajkovito, a ponajviše ekstravagantno. Ali pritom i popartistički komunikativno.


Extravagant Trivialities From the common or garden to the artistically unique, exclusive and extravagant ViĹĄnja Slavica Gabout

Extravagance has in art, especially the modern and contemporary version, always been a characteristic of creative and imaginative artist personalities. Personalities that do not need norms, that sidestep the settled and conventional, transgress the borders of the everyday and the expected, and are concerned with the exclusive and the exceptional, as well as with the provocative, bizarre and eccentric. The extravagant in essence refers to all that is uncommon, strange and provocative. In more recent times, however, the meaning of this concept has stratified, and the hermeneutic frame has expanded, and in the context of the new paradigms extravagance is read as something exceptional and marvellous, as out of the common run, unique and highly valuable, interesting and unconventional, ludic, fanciful and witty. This meaning has already been played with by Marcel Duchamps, the Dadaists and the Surrealists, above all by the Pop Artists, combining extravagance with its opposite, triviality and banality. By a change in the context, the common or garden, the trivial and the uniformity of mass production is turned into the exclusive and the artistically highly valuable. Into the extravagant. Thereby they introduced a new aesthetic and a new visual system, which elevated

everyday, trivial, use and trash objects to the level of extravagant artistic objects of high quality. Although Pop was long since packed up into the history of modern art, since its glittery moments whistled through the 1950s and 1960s, it did not, nevertheless, erase all traces of itself, but left them visible, and artists still today keep in line with them, depending on the time, space, authorial idiom and social conditions, Its communicativeness, openness, unconventionality and characteristic ironical wit have retained for artists in the present time even an irresistible attractiveness, showing that the Pop Art idiom, with its themes, content, its penchant for irony, cynicism and provocation, as well as for humour, is adaptable to authorial individualities of a different discourse. And also adaptable to the current time, to current topics and to the narratives of contemporary art. The younger generation of contemporary artists, then, in the eighties and nineties revived the Pop stylistic idiom, redefining it in the spirit of contemporary art, calling it neo- or post-Pop. It has the same fresh immediacy and as it were brashness that characterises Pop, but now adjusted to the moment, with a different semiotics and addressing soci-


ety and the quotidian with a critical and activist discourse. What has remained a constant is the inspiration provided by objects and contents of everyday life as well as its openness, communicativeness and democratic accessibility. What is different is the turn to individuality and individual interpretations in the spirit of Pop Art, to be found not only in the fine arts, but also in design, interior design, fashion and jewellery. Pop and its stylistic idiom provided the Precious Metals and Artistic Jewellery Design Section of ULUPUH with its inspiration for the conception and production of the exhibition Extravagant Trivialities. In its jewel-sculptures and objects, as well as wearable jewelinstallations, the authors here creatively follow on the one hand the strategies and practices of contemporary art, particularly contemporary sculpture, while on the other hand they have attained the ultimate freedom of Pop Art expression. They play with an imaginative combinatorics of transformation and metamorphosis (of context, reality, use/non-use, function/dysfunction, real/ irreal, trivial/exclusive) creating of the world of reality a world of phantasmagoric and ludic tales, in which the little and the unimportant object have the

weightiness of monuments. A world in which precious materials are combined with the lowly, the non-artistic, found, ready-made, consumable, organic and even edible. The relation between cheap and expensive is placed into a new frame of evaluation, entering into the area of art. In this case, into the domain of contemporary sculpture, related here to the human body, while transmitting interesting authorial tales, sometimes at their base with elements of irony (Gross, Bellante, Naerlović), sometimes with some bizarrerie (Krušelj, Vitez, E. Lumezi), and sometimes with unlooked for witticisms (Šuk, Petrinjak, Podnarčuk). These Pop Art-ish jewel-sculptures excite particular attention because they are constant “moveable objects” and constant “moveable installations”, everything seeming variable in time and space, performerly. And in addition also markedly unconventional, provocative, laid back, and extravagant too, for the elements of the installations and the objects are at first sight incompatible, but counterpointed, harmonised and aesthetically attuned. Worth mentioning here is that the work of one of the greats of Pop, Claes Oldenburg – his sculptures with their inverted positions, disrupted dimensions (little being big and vice

versa) and their contradictory feel (soft sculptures) – has been precisely because of its Pop Art sculptural communication an inspiration to this group of artists. There are amusing references to Oldenburg, then, in the works of Nearlović, Odrčić, Podnarčuk and Petrinjak. Pop art has remained close to the general public to this day for it uses an intelligible visual vocabulary drawn from a repertoire known to all. And so the conversation with the public conducted at a distance, and is, rather, an open dialogue. A dialogue of the kind conducted by the works of the artists of the exhibition Extravagant Trivialities. Works that however, whatever their volubility, rise above triviality and banality and come across as poetic, fairy-tale-ish and most of all extravagant. But also, communicative in the manner of Pop Art.

Biografije Stjepan Balja

Stjepan Balja rođen je 1940. godine u Zaprešiću. Školovani je zlatar, koji je do 1966. vodio vlastitu radionicu za izradu i oblikovanje nakita od plemenitih kovina. Status majstora umjetničkog zanata stekao je 1981. Od 1993. kreira umjetnički unikatni nakit kao samostalni likovni umjetnik i otad vodi svoj „Otvoreni umjetnički atelier Stjepan Balja“ u Zaprešiću. Izlaže od 1968. godine u zemlji i u inozemstvu i do sada je priredio 48 samostalnih, sudjelovao na preko 150 skupnih izložbi te sa svojim nakitom priredio dvije modne revije u Europi i u Australiji. Za svoj rad dobio je Nagradu za životno djelo Grada Zaprešića, a za zasluge u hrvatskoj kulturi odlikovan je Redom Danice hrvatske s likom Marka Marulića. Član je ULUPUH-a od 1993. Živi u Zaprešiću.

Rođena je 1951. godine u Daruvaru. Diplomirala je na Višoj grafičkoj školi i Medicinskom fakultetu u Zagrebu. Izradu nakita u srebru izučila je kod Lazera Rok Lumezija u Zagrebu. Godine 2005. upisala je studij akta na Scuola Libera del Nudo pri Accademia di Belle Arti u Firenci, a 2011. godine osvojila stipendiju “Fondazione Arnaldo Pomodoro” u Centro T. A. M. - Trattamento Artistico dei Metalli. Osim što radi u plemenitim metalima, bavi se slikanjem, crtanjem i skulpturom. Izlagala je u Hrvatskoj, Bosni i Hercegovini, Srbiji, Litvi i Italiji. Carlos Ignacio Bellante

Smiljka Franjić

Rođen je 1969. godine u La Plati (Argentina), gdje je pohađao Srednju tehničku školu (Escuela de Educación Técnica n°10). Početkom 1990.-ih počinje istraživati mogućnosti obrade alpake i srebra, te se posvećuje izradi nakita i drugih uporabnih predmeta, u različitim materijalima i tehnikama, vežući se na višestoljetnu tradiciju latinoameričke kulturne baštine. Uz brojna izlaganja na sajmovima, do sada je realizirao 4 samostalne izložbe te sudjelovao na

Karlo Gross, akademski kipar i medaljer, rođen je 1978. godine u Zagrebu. Godine 1997. završio je Školu za primijenjenu umjetnost i dizajn u Zagrebu, Odjel za dizajn metala, a 2005. diplomirao na kiparskom odsjeku Akademije likovnih umjetnosti u Zagrebu, na usmjerenju Mala plastika i medaljerstvo, pod mentorstvom prof. Damira Mataušića. Izlagao je na 3 samostalne izložbe i sudjelovao na tridesetak specijaliziranih izložbi medaljerstva i male plastike u Hrvatskoj i u svijetu. Stalni je sudionik pozivnih natječaja za izradu kovanica i kovanog novca Hrvatske narodne banke i Hrvatskog novčarskog zavoda te suradnik Ljevaonice ALU na kiparskim projektima. Rođen je 1951. godine u Velikoj Gorici. U Zagrebu je završio petogodišnju Školu primijenjene umjetnosti, Odjel za obradu metala, u klasi prof. Hrvoja Ljubića. Od 1972. godine radi kao dizajner u Radionici primijenjenih umjetnosti. Bavi se kreiranjem i izradom umjetničkog unikatnog nakita, plitkih reljefa, medalja, plaketa te skulptura komornog formata. Uz to se bavi slikarstvom, izradom suvenira i arheoloških replika, restauriranjem starina u srebru i zlatu, kao i ilustriranjem knjiga. Dobitnik je brojnih

Autorica je grafička dizajnerica te dizajnerica suvremenog umjetničkog nakita i objekata od plemenitih metala i alternativnih materijala. Rođena je 1976. u Zagrebu. Diplomirala je 1999. na Grafičkom fakultetu Sveučilišta u Zagrebu. Od 2013. razvija svoj osobni brend „OvoNijeNakit“. Godine 2014. dobila je priznanje “Certificate of Excellence 2014” (Arts & Crafts Design Award). Sudjelovala je na mnogim grupnim i samostalnim izložbama u Hrvatskoj i u inozemstvu. Članica je ULUPUHa i Hrvatske zajednice samostalnih umjetnika. Živi i djeluje u Zagrebu.

Biographies Stjepan Balja

Stjepan Balja was born in 1940 in Zaprešić. He is a trained goldsmith who up to 1966 ran his own workshop for the making and design of jewellery out of precious metals. He attained the status of master of fine craft in 1981. Since 1993 he has been creating one-off pieces of artistic jewellery and has also since that time run the Stjepan Balja Open Art Studio in Zaprešić. He has been exhibiting at home and abroad since 1968 and has now had 48 oneman shows, taken part in over 150 collective exhibitions and featured his jewellery in two fashion shows, in Europe and Australia. For his work he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award of the City of Zaprešić, and for services to Croatian culture was decorated with the Medal of Order of the Croatian Daystar with the face of Marko Marulić. Since 2000 he has lived and worked in Zagreb, devoting himself to the making of contemporary jewellery and sculpture. She was born in 1951 in Daruvar. She graduated from the Graphic College and the Medical Faculty in Zagreb. She studied making silver jewellery with Lazer Rok Lumezi in Zagreb. Smiljka Franjić

Smiljka Franjić was born in Zagreb in 1963. In 1984 she took a degree in educational science from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Zagreb, class teaching major. Supervised by Zoltan Novak, in 2001 she completed a course at the Agora Painting School, and in 2007 a course in silver fashioning in the Lumezi Open Studio. She has exhibited at some score of solo and collective exhibitions at home and abroad and has had her works featured in several fashion shows. Karlo Gross is an academy trained sculptor and medallist born in 1978 in Zagreb. In 1997 he graduated from the School of Applied Arts and Design in Zagreb, metal design major, and in 2005 graduated from the sculptural section of the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb, small scale sculpture and medal making major, supervised by Damir Mataušić. He has had three solo shows and taken part in some thirty specialised medal-making and small-scale sculpture exhibitions in Croatia and elsewhere. He is a regular participant of invited competitions for the making of coins of the Croatian National Bank and the Croatian Monetary Institute, and an associate of the Academy of Fine Arts Foundry in its sculptural projects. Since 2016 he has been a member of

Eva Lumezi

Zlatko was born in 1951 in Velika Gorica. In Zagreb he completed the five year course of the School of Applied Arts, metal working department, class of Hrvoje Ljubić. Since 1972 he has worked as a designer in the Applied Arts Workshop. He is involved in the creation and making of one-off pieces of artistic jewellery, bas reliefs, medals, plaques and small scale sculpture. In addition, he is occupied with painting, the making of souvenirs and archaeological replicas, the restoration of silver and gold antiques, and book illustration. He is the winner of numerous prizes and commendations and has had 13 solo exhibitions and taken part in 72 collective shows, while his jewels have also been featured in several fashion shows. Luka Petrinjak

This artist is a university sculpture specialist. He was born in 1974 in Zagreb. In 1998 he took a degree in the Koninklije Academie voor Schone Kunsten, Antwerp in sculpture, threedimensional design (1994-1996), elective department jewellery (1996/1998), elective department silversmithing. At the Academie Royale des Beaux - Arts de Bruxelles he studied from 1998 to 2000. At the same time he privately specialised in Japanese urushi lacquer with Jean Lemmens. In the Lumezi Open Studio in Zagreb, with Lazer Rok Lumezi, he completed a course in the making of artistic jewellery.
