Public Engagement Achievement

Catharine Biddle

Catharine Biddle joined the UMaine community in 2015. In her work in rural education research, which involves undergraduate and graduate students, she has enhanced school-community relations, helped change K–12 educational paradigms and influenced the focus of rural education research nationwide. In particular, her collaboration in research-practice partnerships results in long-term changes for communities, including improvements in school climate, student attendance and achievement, and the formation of new local coalitions of nonprofits dedicated to addressing these issues.

Biddle collaborated on a Washington County research-practice partnership to address the need to provide services and traumaresponsive education in schools focused on children’s exposure to — and healing from — adverse experiences associated with substance use, poverty and other challenges facing families. She helped to secure $1.5 million in funding to co-design a pilot program, Transforming Rural Experience in Education, in three Washington County elementary schools, from 2017–21.

The jointly designed approach to trauma-responsive practice, which refined the centering of the student voice as a primary vehicle for healing, has since been replicated in multiple school districts nationwide and is the subject of a book, “Trauma Responsive Schooling: Centering Student Voice and Healing,” co-authored with Mark Tappan and Lyn Mikel Brown.

The pilot program led to the formation of the Rural Vitality Lab, a cross-institutional partnership between Colby College and UMaine focused on conducting research to support the development of healthy ecologies for youth in Maine and beyond. Biddle now works in partnership with additional community development groups such as the Midcoast Community Collaborative to address rural vitality, including trauma-responsive practices in support of student success.

In addition, for the past two years, Biddle has worked with a team of researchers in partnership with the National Rural Education Association (NREA) to craft the 2022–2027 National Rural Education Research Agenda. An outcome of this collaboration was an invitation for UMaine to host the New England Rural Education Hub, part of the Rural Schools Collaborative National Hub Network. Biddle directs the New England Rural Education Hub, launched last fall as a national model for rural university-community partnerships.

PRESIDENTIAL
Associate Professor of Educational Leadership

Gregory Porter

Gregory Porter, a University of Maine alumnus, has been a member of the faculty for 38 years and has served as project leader for the university’s Potato Breeding Program since 2007. The program, which involves student researchers at UMaine research facilities in Orono and Presque Isle, creates new potato varieties that provide improved quality and marketing opportunities for growers, while helping to solve pest management problems. It is the only one in the eastern United States with an emphasis on russets and long whites intended for the processing and fresh produce markets.

Creating a successful new potato variety requires 10–12 years. In the past decade, the UMaine Potato Breeding Program, in partnership with the Maine Potato Board, has released five new varieties — Easton, Sebec, Caribou Russet, Pinto Gold and Hamlin Russet — that had the competitive yield and quality attributes necessary to move them from the laboratory to market shelves. Nationally, varieties released by the university and its eastern regional collaborators since 2007 were grown on 8,240 U.S. seed acres during 2022, with an approximate seed value of $28.8 million and potential production value of $267.8 million. During 2022, Caribou Russet at 1,874 seed acres was ranked 12th in the U.S. and its estimated crop value for 2023 is approximately $60 million. Pinto Gold continues to be a favorite for home gardeners, farmers markets, roadside stands and gourmet chefs.

In his research, Porter prioritizes resistance to diseases such as late blight, scab and Potato Virus Y, and uses DNA-based markers to help select potato varieties with resistance to key potato pests. In addition, his work on crop rotations, soil management and supplemental irrigation has helped develop a better understanding of cropping systems that provide high yields and excellent crop quality while protecting and building the soil. Nutrient management research, particularly potassium fertilization, has led to greater understanding of most efficient use while maintaining or improving crop quality in potato production systems.

For the significant impact of his applied research on potato growers and industry leaders in Maine and beyond, Porter has received numerous awards, most recently the Potato Association of America Honorary Life Membership and being named one of the 25 Mainers of the Year by Maine Magazine, both in 2022.

The new Presidential Innovation Award established this year recognizes the university’s mission of advancing learning and discovery through excellence and innovation. It will be an annual award to a UMaine or UMaine Machias faculty member or team that has translated research discoveries and scholarly activity into products or services that have resulted in economic impact and/or significant social and cultural benefit in Maine and beyond.

UNIVERSITY OF MAINE Graduate School Celebrating 100 Years

In 2023, the University of Maine Graduate School is celebrating 100 years of advancing educational opportunities and impacting the workforce and economic development in Maine and beyond. Responsible for providing oversight for over 150 degree programs, the Graduate School facilitates the realization of nationally recognized graduate programs and educational partnerships, and provides financial and academic support to a growing and diverse student body.

UMaine has granted graduate degrees since 1881, when the Maine State College (now the University of Maine System) Board of Trustees awarded the first Master of Science degree to Walter Balentine in the subject of agriculture. At the time, graduate degrees were only offered in five disciplinary areas: agriculture, chemistry, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, and science and literature, reflecting Maine’s land grant mission of providing public education in agriculture and the mechanic arts. Some of Balentine’s postgraduate studies included time at Wesleyan, the Connecticut State Experiment Station, and a research fellowship to study agricultural chemistry in Germany. In 1882, Balentine became a professor of agriculture, and in 1885 was named founding director of the first Agricultural Experiment Station in Maine, supporting the growth of agricultural pursuits in the region and throughout the world.

Percia Vinal White was the first female graduate student from UMaine, earning her Master of Arts degree in science and literature in 1882. White, a native of Orono and one of the first women undergraduates at the University of Maine, was a writer of short stories, publishing under the name A. Steele Penn. At the age of 79, her novel “Wearers of the Hemlock” was published. A businesswoman, White carried on

her husband’s insurance business for 15 years after his passing. White was also very involved in her community as an active member of many clubs and organizations, such as the Women’s Club of Orono, the Current Events Club of Millbridge, The Order of the Eastern Star, and the Maine Writers’ Research club, where she contributed articles for books published by the club.

Over the years, three University of Maine presidents have received graduate degrees at the University of Maine. Harold Sherburne Boardman earned a graduate degree in civil engineering in 1898 and served as dean of the University of Maine Technology College before serving as the seventh president from 1926–34. Caribou native Winthrop Libby earned his graduate degree in agricultural economics in 1933 and served as the dean of the College of Life Sciences and Agriculture and director of Cooperative Extension before he served as the 11th president from 1969–73. The remaining University of Maine graduate alumnus to serve as president was Frederick Hutchinson of Atkinson, Maine. President Hutchinson received an M.S. degree in agronomy from UMaine in 1958 before earning his Ph.D. from The Pennsylvania State University in 1966. He returned to the University of Maine to serve as dean of agriculture, and went on to become provost and senior vice president at The Ohio State University before returning to the University of Maine as its 16th president.

In 1923, the year the Graduate School was founded, 20 graduate degrees were conferred under the first Graduate School dean George Davis Chase. Chase received his Ph.D. from Harvard University and then spent a year in Germany at the University of Leipzig before being appointed an assistant professor at Cornell University and later as an associate

22

professor at Wesleyan University. He joined the University of Maine faculty in 1905 as professor and head of the Department of Classics.

Chase’s commitment to graduate education is evident throughout his career at the University of Maine. In 1938 during Chase’s last Commencement as dean, a resolution of congratulations was shared, stating that George Davis Chase “has done more than any man to develop and maintain in the University the high standard of graduate scholarship and research which chiefly entitle an institution of higher learning to be considered a university.”

In the early years, the Graduate School was located in a variety of historical buildings on campus, including North Stevens Hall, Fogler Library and Winslow Hall, before eventually moving into the first floor of Stodder Hall in 2009, where it is located today. The first doctoral degree was not conferred until 1960, when a Ph.D. in chemistry was awarded to Basil S. Farah.

Today the university’s graduate student population contains representation from 74 countries and conferred a recordbreaking 769 graduate degrees during the previous school year. The Graduate School now offers over 150 graduate programs, over 50 of which are available online with more developing in emerging areas. As a leader in workforce development, the Graduate School is laser-focused on making a global impact while staying locally relevant.

UMaine is designated an R1 university by the prestigious Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. The R1 designation signifies “very high research activity” the highest possible tier a doctoral research university can achieve

in the Carnegie Classification. Updates are completed every three years. Only 146 (3.7%) of the nation’s 3,982 degreegranting postsecondary institutions in the United States are classified as top-tier doctoral research universities.

The research and creative achievement at the University of Maine are at the cutting edge of innovation. For example, UMaine boasts the world’s largest 3D printer, which, using biobased materials, has so far printed 3Dirigo, the world’s largest 3D-printed boat, and BioHome3D, the world’s first 100% biobased 3D-printed home.

“Our research and graduate studies set us apart with the distinctiveness and leadership that enhance our national competitiveness,” said Kody Varahramyan, Vice President for Research and Dean of the Graduate School.

In 2022, the university established the Graduate Centennial Impact Fund to advance graduate education at the University of Maine and to help meet critical needs, including for graduate fellowships. More information about the Centennial Campaign is available through the Graduate School’s Centennial website (umaine.edu/gradcentennial).

As we look to the future, the Graduate School will continue its long history of anticipating real-world needs, while generating dynamic solutions that make long-term impacts on the workforce and economic development needs of Maine and beyond.

To learn more about the Graduate School’s history, share your own story, and stay updated on upcoming centennial events, please visit umaine.edu/gradcentennial.

UNIVERSITY OF MAINE DEGREES

The University of Maine offers curricula in a wide variety of academic fields leading to baccalaureate, master’s and doctoral degrees. The baccalaureate or bachelor’s degree is awarded to undergraduate students who complete the required program in their respective departments. Master’s and doctoral degrees are awarded to students who complete prescribed graduate study. A Certificate of Advanced Study (C.A.S.) and Education Specialist (EdS) are available for specified graduate study beyond the master’s degree.

Undergraduate degrees with Latin honors are conferred at Commencement for the following attainments of rank: summa cum laude: 3.7 GPA; magna cum laude: 3.5 GPA; cum laude: 3.3 GPA. The university bases the GPA on the student’s work at the University of Maine, and that must amount to at

least 60 credits or 50% of the total degree credits required in the program of study, whichever is greater.

Students graduating from the Honors College are conferred baccalaureate degrees with the designation of honors, high honors or highest honors. In order to receive a degree with honors, a student must complete the honors general education curriculum, which includes the four-course civilizations sequence, as well as a tutorial and two semesters of research leading to the successful defense of the honors thesis.

Degrees are awarded at the end of the semester or session in which degree requirements have been completed, not necessarily accompanied by Commencement ceremonies.

ACADEMIC REGALIA

As early as the 12th century, the first modern universities at Bologna and Paris were the centers of European learning. The usual garb of the time for both churchmen and laymen was a long gown, necessary for warmth in the unheated buildings of the day. Scholars, generally members of church orders, wore such robes, as well as hoods to protect their shaved heads. Later, skull caps were worn on the head and the hood became a cape that could be pulled over the head in unpleasant weather. The hood was also sometimes used to collect alms from the more affluent members of the community. As more universities were founded, distinctive forms of the gown and hood were adopted by their faculties. Variations indicated various ranks within the institutions. Strict rules were published, and sometimes tailors who departed from the authorized design were punished.

The academic hat was a later development adapted from the headdress of ordinary people. Academically, it was originally worn as a symbol of the master’s degree and existed in various forms: some were round, some square, and some had a tuft in the center. The flat, square mortarboard of today originated in Oxford.

Academic costume came to America in 1754 with the founding of King’s College, now Columbia University. Styles became quite varied, as they were in Europe, but in 1895, a group of American college and university representatives met to establish a uniform system of academic apparel for this country. This led to the establishment in 1902 of an “Intercollegiate Code of Academic Costume.” The American Council on Education formed a committee in 1932 to review the code, and it was again reviewed and revised in 1960.

THE GONFALON The gonfalon is a flag or banner that hangs from a crosspiece or frame. It originated in the medieval states of Italy as an ensign of state or office. It is used in many university ceremonies to designate the various colleges or schools of the institution. The gonfalon for each college usually precedes the graduates as they enter the ceremony. Distinguished graduates or faculty may carry gonfalons for their specific colleges. At UMaine, they represent the colleges, Maine Business School, the Division of Lifelong Learning and the Graduate School. The University Crest on the gonfalon

embodies the history of the University of Maine and its position as the state’s flagship university.

THE MACE Originally a weapon of offense used in medieval warfare, the mace has been refined into a symbolic device used on ceremonial occasions. The design of the University of Maine’s mace was suggested by members of the Department of Art’s spring 1996 sculpture class. The mace is carried in an upright position into the ceremony. During the ceremony, the mace rests in its stand in full view of the assembly as the emblem of authority. At the recession, the mace is carried in a downward position to represent the completion of the ceremony.

THE CAP The mortarboard cap, worn flat on the head with one corner of the square facing the front, has a tassel that may be black or the color assigned to the field of study. Doctors in all fields may wear a tassel of metallic gold. Some institutions have adopted the biretta or tam (for doctoral degrees) instead of the mortarboard.

THE HOOD The institution by which the degree was awarded and the field of study in which the degree was earned are represented by the hood. The lining of the hood identifies the institution that awarded the degree. The length of the hood and the width of its border vary in relation to the degree held.

THE GOWN The cut of the gown indicates whether the wearer holds a bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree. The bachelor’s gown is a simple, unornamented robe with bell-shaped sleeves. The master’s gown is more elaborate with long sleeves closed at the end, with the arm passing through a slit above the elbow. The doctoral robe is ornamented with three bars on each sleeve and panels on the front. The standard color of the robe is black, although some institutions have adopted other colors.

HONORS COLLEGE

First-year students are invited to join the Honors College at the University of Maine based on academic achievement in high school. In their first and second year preceptorials taught by a diverse faculty, students gain a broad knowledge base and critical thinking skills that are hallmarks of a liberal education. They also lay the foundation for more specialized work in their disciplines in the last two years. The Honors College curriculum culminates in a thesis completed during the senior year that focuses on an independent project in the student’s major area of interest. Following successful completion of the Honors College curriculum, student work is formally recognized with the designation of honors, high honors or highest honors. Honors College graduates wear a medallion with the honors logo and Latin motto Studium eruditionis ardescens — igniting a passion for learning.
