to create a DEI ad hoc committee to create resources for students, faculty, and staff who might need support.” The Diversity, Inclusion, and Culture task force was created. The team worked together to create a Commitment to Diversity statement, which was voted on and passed by the faculty on October 23, 2020. The task force also worked to create content for an MBS DEI website which was published on March 26, 2021.
The Maine Business School’s Commitment to Diversity The Maine Business School and the Graduate School of Business believe that supporting, respecting, and appreciating diverse perspectives and experiences strengthens our community, challenges our assumptions, and yields better decision making in business and in life. We are committed to ensuring that all members of the MBS and GSB communities feel welcomed, heard, and engaged.
diversity, equity, and inclusion
n the summer of 2020, a group of faculty began work to create the MBS Diversity, Inclusion, and Culture task force. They crafted a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion statement that was adopted by the MBS faculty in the fall of 2020. The idea was born out of a conversation between Matt Graham, Dave Barrett, and Jason Harkins. “After the death of George Floyd I was concerned about students that might be impacted emotionally and psychologically,” Graham says. “Dave joined the conversation and we decided

We surveyed our alumni on the technologies they use in their careers. More than 90% of respondents told us they used Excel on a regular basis. This solidified our move to treat Excel as a core concept of a business education at the Maine Business School. In the first year, 30% of BSBA students were Excel certified. We changed the course from three credits over 14 weeks to one credit over eight weeks. We also pilot tested the certification for MaineMBA students. Twelve MBA students became certified at the basic level and 11 at the expert level.
“Your students made a plan for our growth that is actionable for our small staff and volunteers to carry through with success.” - Cynthia Walker, Executive Director, Brick Store Museum (Elisa O’Donnell’s MBA 670 class project)

ur faculty set a goal to infuse analytics into the curriculum. This year we started with our Excel certification course, BIS 105. We worked with several different software programs to make this experience useful for our students, becoming the first CertiPort Certification Center in Maine in the process. Since Excel is a Microsoft program, Tanya Beaulieu, Ph.D., took on the challenge of figuring out how to make the experience work for our students who are Mac users.
