enevieve McDonald hauls lobsters five months a year in Western Penobscot Bay. The mom to twins Evalina and Elise also is a legislator representing people on island communities around Stonington, Maine. In 2019, the 37-year-old graduated summa cum laude. She earned a Bachelor of University Studies with a Maine studies minor online through the Division of Lifelong Learning. At UMaine, McDonald strengthened her research skills and abilities to persuasively speak and write — all of which have been valuable in Augusta. She also gained skills to facilitate communication between people earning a living on the ocean and the scientific community. Sea-level rise, shifting species, pollution — they’re all topics in her wheelhouse. She was inspired to run for the House after taking the Washington, D.C. Travel Course through the William S. Cohen Institute for Leadership & Public Service at UMaine.

Wake up around 7 a.m., shower, and feed my cat, Wesley. Grab fruit and granola on the walk to campus and get coffee at Memorial Union. Stop at the Multicultural Student Center to say hi to my supervisors and check on upcoming responsibilities. _______
Check emails, drink coffee, review course syllabi before my 10 a.m. class and finalize writing assignments for the Maine Campus news staff. _______
In Urdu (official national language of Pakistan) class, we learn words relating to family and use them in sentences. Our assignment is to draw a family tree and label it in Urdu. _______
Capstone class focuses on media ethics and urges students to think about how mass media adheres to these ethics. For my research project, I’m examining ways mass media covers peaceful Black Lives Matter protests. We discuss utilitarian versus deontological ethical decisions, and examine how these ethics can be applied to journalism. _______
Usually eat lunch at the Multicultural Center. Sometimes it’s leftovers in the fridge from a lunch-and-learn event. (There’s almost always leftover food!) Print flyers for programs, draft an email about a collaboration for Diversity Week and call local businesses to ask about gift cards for a poetry slam. _______
At the Maine Campus office, I check emails and make a list of topics to discuss in the news staff meeting, then study in my office. For Tuesday classes, I add assignments into my planner and text friends about supper. _______
I live in an off-campus apartment, and my friends and I share making meals. We take turns cooking, then eat together. This gives me time to cuddle with my cat and unwind. _______
