Project Description

This 700 unit condominium is designed for the town of Oakville, which is a rapidly growing suburb on the West of Toronto. Currently an area comprised mostly of single-family detached and townhomes, Oakville is fast becoming a dense city. Several high-rise developments are in the works and this condominium on Trafalgar Road is a significant addition. The project is based on two towers situated on a shared podium of 7 storeys. Amenities are located on the Ground and 7th Floor Levels. The project features some town houses at the Ground Level.

I was part of the design team for the project during Design Development phase. I helped develop suite layouts for marketing, worked on Revit to create the fully integrated model. I also worked on developing design alternatives for the facade.

LUMS - Campus Expansion

Type: Higher Education

Location: Lahore, Pakistan

Status: Not built

Date of Completion: N/A

Constructed Area: N/A

Project Description

The Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) is located in the residential suburb of Lahore. Our firm was invited to participate in an ideas competition to create a vision and suggest strategies for expansion of the existing campus.

The existing campus has been envisioned on a rectilinear grid with islands of similar sizes that are hosts to the various buildings of the campus.

Being the lead designer on this project, I was tasked to study the existing conditions, identify the problems to be resolved, formulate guidelines and principles for future expansion, and to recommend strategies and plan for growth.

The project carried the double challenge of responding to the earlier vision of the previous consultant as well as to address the problems that had arisen over the years as a result of growth and ad hoc interventions by the client at various stages.

Principles of Expansion:

1) Balance in functional utilization of land

2) Legibility in zoning

3) Hierarchy in movement - both pedestrian and vehicular

4) Integration of landscape into a coherent spatial organization

Strategy and stages of transformation:

1) Creating a vehicular loop, laying out the extension of roads

2) Creating the pedestrian armature to set a course for expansion

3) Integration of landscape and creation of outdoor spaces

4) Replacement of certain buildings over the long run

Existing Campus Plan
Ariel View of the LUMS Campus

Lack of clarity and consistency in boundary between public/private, built/ unbuilt and landscape/ paved surfaces.

Designed but unused vehicular pathways could be potentially converted to pedestrian walkways.

Vehicular pathways closed for public use, thereby indicating their underutilization.

Space between buildings can be conceived as interstitial space for gathering or informal interactions.

Proposed Scheme

Water bodies alongside pedestrian walkways and campus or dormitory buildings creates areas of repose as well as serve to store rainwater.

Different formal vocabulary to earlier buildings that have more symmetric and isolated forms. In contrast, new buildings create a more integrated environment with indoor and outdoor spaces flowing into one another.

Pedestrian armature running through the center provides access to all parts of the campus and creates a lively environment.

Open air amphitheater - creates an area for outdoor performances as well as a place for gathering and informal interactions between students, teachers and on-campus dwellers.

Vehicular circuit around the entire site with small parking lots flanking the road at certain points. Taking the vehicular traffic away from the central part of the site leaves space for pedestrians and outdoor functions.

New vehicular access to create a loop and to streamline traffic movement through the campus as well as to create hierarchy and legibility.
