PROCEDURE FOR SELECTING HONORARY GRADUANDS Nominations of distinguished persons for honorary degrees are accepted from both the University community and the general public. The Senate Committee on Honorary Degrees assesses the nominations using specific criteria which include distinguished achievement in scholarship, the arts, or public service. Only those nominations which, in the opinion of the committee, meet the criteria for an honorary degree are forwarded to Senate, accompanied by comments of the committee, background information, and letters of support. In order for Senate to recommend the conferring of an honorary degree, at least two-thirds of the votes must be in the affirmative. Not all of the candidates that have been approved by Senate are immediately the recipients of an honorary degree. Because of the limited number of ceremonies and the fact that in some cases persons are unable to attend a particular ceremony, a small list is maintained of approved candidates who will be invited to receive honorary degrees at subsequent University Convocations.

CONVOCATION ADDRESS Elder Margaret Lavalee For more than 50 years, Margaret Lavallee, a Traditional Ojibway woman, has been committed to sharing Indigenous culture and knowledge, improving health services for Indigenous communities and mentoring young people. She is the respected Elder in Residence in the education division of Ongomiizwin, the Indigenous Institute of Health and Healing in the University of Manitoba’s Rady Faculty of Health Sciences. The word “Ongomiizwin” means “to be very careful of one’s own life and for others for the future generations”. Elder Margaret, who led the naming process for Ongomiizwin, has devoted her life to clearing a path by passing on traditional teachings and advocating for equitable health care. Elder Margaret was born and raised at Sagkeeng First Nation, Manitoba. She is a Survivor of the residential school system. At the age of 14 she went to work as a nurse’s aide at the Federal Indian Hospital in Pine Falls. This inspired her dream to improve the health of her people. While raising her six children, she worked at the Mount Carmel Clinic in Winnipeg. At the age of 33 she enrolled at Brandon University, where she rediscovered her Anishinaabe culture. As the first program director of Aboriginal Health Services at Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg, she provided resources and interpreter services to Indigenous patients and their families for 18 years. She went on to serve as an Aboriginal awareness facilitator for the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority. Elder Margaret is the co-founder of Red Willow Lodge, a teaching and healing centre. She is a sun dancer, sacred pipe carrier and sweat lodge leader who demonstrates strength, resilience and integrity. Since joining the UM community in 2005, Elder Margaret has provided cultural teaching and support to Indigenous and non-Indigenous students, faculty and staff. She is determined to ensure that Rady Faculty of Health Sciences students graduate as health professionals who provide culturally safe care. She has influenced many lives as a wise and generous mentor. She also leads ceremonies and provides grounding in Indigenous principles for academic operations, research projects and clinical teaching. She has played a key role in the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences’ approach to addressing racism and working in support of Reconciliation. Elder Margaret considers her most sacred and important role to be that of Grandmother and Great-Grandmother. She is a member of the Grandmother Elders Council of Winnipeg. The University of Manitoba is proud to award a Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, to Margaret Lavallee in recognition of her life-changing impact as a university Elder and her tireless dedication to improving the health of Indigenous Peoples in Manitoba.

DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD June Marion James Throughout her career, Dr. June Marion James was a pioneer, creating a path for others to follow her confident lead. Dr. James was the first woman of colour to be admitted to the then University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Medicine. After graduating in 1967, Dr. James became an innovator in the areas of asthma and allergy. Within the Max Rady College of Medicine, Dr. James distinguished herself as a demonstrator, clinical instructor and professor. A major achievement was her work to establish Manitoba’s first Family Asthma Program, which helped reduce the number of hospital admissions for children with asthma and increase the number of asthmatic children playing sports. She was also a founding member of the Manitoba Allergy Society. In 2003, Dr. James broke new ground when she took on the role of President of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba, becoming the first Black president of a Provincial Medical college in Canada. Dr. James also made a positive impact outside of academia and the clinic. She provided leadership in many community organizations, including as President of the Manitoba Museum Foundation and as a board member of The Winnipeg Foundation. She also served as the director of the University of Manitoba’s Alumni Board and is a board member of St. John’s College. June considers her role in the in the development of the Harambee Housing Co-Operative, a 54-unit affordable housing complex, one of her greatest achievements. As a human rights advocate and defender, Dr. James developed and presented briefs before various provincial bodies on a number of issues, including affirmative action, racism in schools and gender equality. For her contributions, Dr. James has received many honours, including the Queen Elizabeth II 50th Jubilee Medal, the Order of Manitoba, Doctors Manitoba’s Physician of the Year, and an Honorary Diploma from Red River College. The University of Manitoba is proud to bestow the Board of Governors’ highest honour, the Distinguished Service Award, upon Dr. June Marion James.

CONVOCATION ADDRESS Mary Jane McCallum Dr. Mary Jane McCallum, a First Nations woman of Cree heritage, has made an extraordinary impact as a champion for health care in northern and Indigenous communities, a social justice advocate and an Indigenous leader. Dr. McCallum is believed to be the first Indigenous woman in Canada to become a dentist. In 2017 she was appointed to the Canadian Senate, where she continues to represent Manitoba. In 2021 she became the first Indigenous chancellor, and the first woman chancellor, of Brandon University. A citizen of the Barren Lands First Nation in Brochet, Manitoba, Dr. McCallum attended residential school in Guy Hill for 11 years. After earning diplomas in dental nursing and dental therapy, she graduated from the University of Manitoba with her dentistry degree in 1990. During three decades of distinguished service and leadership as a dentist, her roles included leading the UM dental clinic in Churchill and working for the federal First Nations and Inuit Health Branch, delivering care across northern Manitoba. She also served as a dental officer for the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs, led the Aboriginal Dental Health Program at UM, and for a number of years practised on the Opaskwayak Cree Nation reserve near The Pas. While working for more than a decade in her home community of Brochet, she provided dental care and managed community health services, such as a diabetes program and a prenatal program. She was a tireless advocate for better housing and education, ensuring that the community consulted with Elders about local issues. Dr. McCallum has been praised as a peacebuilder who works in a spirit of hope and optimism. In 2021, when Canadian Mennonite University honoured her with its PAX Award, she was described as “a person of profound insight, grace and courage.” She has used her voice to draw attention to the social determinants of health - such as inequitable access to care–for First Nations, Inuit and Métis people. Improvement will come, she has said, through decolonizing the health care system, reclaiming traditional teachings, and supporting patients’ mental, emotional and spiritual healing in addition to their physical care. Dr. McCallum retired from dentistry in 2021. As a senator and university chancellor, she is committed to seeking conciliation between Indigenous Peoples and Canada. She gives presentations about her experience as a former student of residential school in order to raise awareness and build understanding. The University of Manitoba is proud to award a Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, to Dr. Mary Jane McCallum for her groundbreaking leadership in Indigenous health care and her exemplary work in support of Reconciliation and conciliation.
