LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

The University of Manitoba campuses are located on original lands of Anishinaabeg, Cree, Oji-Cree, Dakota and Dene peoples, and on the homeland of the Métis Nation.

We respect the Treaties that were made on these territories, we acknowledge the harms and mistakes of the past, and we dedicate ourselves to move forward in partnership with Indigenous communities in a spirit of Reconciliation and collaboration.

HONOUR SONG

Beginning each convocation ceremony with an Honour Song is a sign of respect and recognition of the Indigenous People as caretakers of this land. It recognizes our collective identities, cultures and languages, and the ongoing commitment of the university to Reconciliation. This song acknowledges the significant accomplishments of the graduates’ journeys as well as their transition into the next stages in their lives.

CHANCELLOR’S MESSAGE

As Chancellor of the University of Manitoba, it is my great pleasure to congratulate the remarkable Class of 2022. Mamhtákosiwin, gigii-minojigem, yawashte, kischi-iteyhtamashchohin, félicitations! You now join our alumni community—a community who shares the best of the University of Manitoba spirit wherever they go.

You are graduating! This is truly a cause for celebration. You have persevered and adapted during a time of historic societal disruption.

You have reached deep within yourselves to get to this day. You have also likely reached out to others, both to lend support and to receive it. We’ve all become more aware of how important it is to look out for each other. Getting here required the support of many. Take some time to thank those special people who have supported you along the way. Never forget how good it feels to help, and to be helped.

In your time at UM, you have cultivated talents the world needs. Please share these generously. Look for ways to contribute, create positive change and amplify the quieter voices. I encourage you to serve others through your profession, or by volunteering. The world needs you! Serving others adds tremendous meaning to our lives and can even transform them.

Be proud of yourselves. You are extraordinary students, forged during extraordinary times. Never ever forget this.

Anne Mahon, BHEcol(Man.) Chancellor

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

How wonderful it is that you are graduating in Fall Term 2022, when our campus is once again alive with in-person activity after years of pandemic isolation. We can finally gather with friends and family to celebrate you, the incredible Class of 2022. When you registered for classes, you never would have thought you would face the challenges you have these past two years. On behalf of this university, thank you for your perseverance. I am confident that as you graduate today, you would agree it was worth it.

Every graduating class is told they will inherit the opportunity to lead our society forward, but this has never been truer than it is for your generation.

This pandemic made us pause virtually every aspect of our lives and collectively re-examine our systems. And as we emerge from this era, I see a burgeoning resolve to advance our society: to create equity and opportunity for all. This is the world you are stepping into as the next generation of leaders. You get to shape it with your big ideas. You will redefine and reimagine and rebuild so much of what this pandemic tested and found to be wanting.

I know you are all ready for the task because UM has empowered you to be bold and to do big things. I’m looking forward to seeing the changes you will soon help bring about.

The University of Manitoba is proud of you. Congratulations.

4

PROCEDURE FOR SELECTING HONORARY GRADUANDS

Nominations of distinguished persons for honorary degrees are accepted from both the university community and the general public. The Senate Committee on Honorary Degrees assesses the nominations using specific criteria which include distinguished achievement in scholarship, the arts or public service. Only those nominations which, in the opinion of the committee, meet the criteria for an honorary degree are forwarded to Senate, accompanied by comments from the committee, background information and letters of support. In order for Senate to recommend the conferring of an honorary degree, at least two-thirds of the votes must be in the affirmative.

6

PETER

HONORARY DEGREE

Renowned Canadian advertising executive Peter Stringham transformed the industry through a potent blend of visionary leadership, strategic thinking and creative excellence.

His father, a Professor Emeritus in UM’s Department of Animal Science, instilled the value of higher education in his son. Stringham received a BA in political studies at UM before beginning his career as a junior copywriter, steadily rising through the ranks to become Senior Vice-President of Gordon Hill Advertising and one of the most influential figures in the industry.

In 1980, he founded an agency of his own–Stringham & Grant Tandy Inc.–in Winnipeg, which he ran successfully for several years, before selling to Baker Lovick Advertising in Vancouver. Under his leadership as General Manager and Executive Vice-President, Baker Lovick Advertising became the first Canadian company to be named international ad agency of the year by Advertising Age magazine.

Achieving astonishing success in Canada, Stringham went on to become President and CEO of BBDO Canada, transforming the company into the nation’s biggest, top-grossing advertising agency. In 1997, Stringham left to join what was then New York’s largest agency: Young & Rubicam North America. As CEO, he was part of the team which took the company to an IPO and succeeded in it being the most successful in agency history. He moved to London, U.K., in 2001 where he helmed the global marketing for HSBC, growing the company brand 11-fold into one of the world’s most valuable brands.

Over his 45-year career, Stringham wielded tremendous influence by promoting the world’s top brands. His ability to lead in both the creative and managerial sides of the industry catapulted him to the top echelons and won him several prestigious awards, including the Retail Banker Award for Best Advertising and Brand Strategy of the Year, Marketing Magazine’s Most Influential Person in Advertising and the Daily Telegraph’s Marketing Director of the Year.

In 2016, Stringham retired as Chairman and CEO of New York-based Young & Rubicam Group of Companies – one of the world’s largest marketing communications groups. He ran their global operations overseeing 27,000 employees and annual revenues in excess of $10 billion while satisfying major clients such as AT&T Corp. and Ford Motor Co.

His enduring passion for his native Canada has seen Stringham apply his leadership skills and creative vision to Canadian organizations including the Winnipeg Folk Festival, where he served as Founding President, and Canopy Growth Corp., where he was a former board member. He also helped launch the federal political career of The Honourable Lloyd Axworthy as his first campaign writer.

In 2013, Peter became a founding Chair of the American branch of War Child, a Canadian non-profit organization that provides safety, education and legal counsel to children in war-torn countries.

The University of Manitoba is proud to award a Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, to Peter Stringham, for his creative innovation and business leadership.

HONORARY DEGREE

A decorated and celebrated Métis novelist, poet, filmmaker and author, Katherena Vermette is one of the most important and recognized writers in Canada today.

Known for the generosity, care and engagement with which she approaches her work, Vermette is equally gifted at writing in several genres, including poetry, fiction, graphic novels, children’s picture books and film.

Vermette grew up in Winnipeg’s vibrant, multifaceted North End which continues to inspire her writing. The disappearance and death of her brother when she was 14 profoundly shaped her worldview and activated her sense of injustice at the discrimination of Indigenous peoples.

Her first published book of poems, North End Love Songs, is a beautifully polished and deeply thoughtful work exploring the contemporary resonances of place, family and Métis history. It was recognized with the prestigious Governor General’s Award for Poetry.

Building on the themes of her previous work, her children’s book series, The Seven Teachings Stories, explores the Anishinaabe Teachings of the Seven Grandfathers in a way that is easy for young people to absorb.

A former kindergarten teacher, Vermette’s passion for empowering and educating Indigenous youth inspired her to write the A Girl Called Echo series of graphic novels that help bridge the gap between Métis history–especially that of Métis women–and the cultural and personal preoccupations of contemporary Indigenous youth. In The Girl and the Wolf, Vermette creates an empowering Indigenous twist on a classic children’s wolf narrative which earned her top spots on Kirkus’ Best Books and USBBY’s Outstanding International Books lists.

In 2016, Vermette released her award-winning novel The Break. Winner of the Amazon.ca First Novel Award, Vermette’s devastating examination of the mechanisms of colonial power and lateral violence that shape and destroy lives in Winnipeg’s inner-city neighborhoods, and the familial love and profound connections that bind people together, became a Canadian bestseller. Widely taught in universities across the country and beyond, it has been the subject of numerous articles and dissertation chapters.

An ambitious and prolific talent, Vermette is also a filmmaker, and released her powerful, evocative prize-winning film This River in 2016. Her second novel, The Strangers, was released in 2021, and won the Atwood Gibson Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize. Beyond her literary triumphs, Vermette has been a generous community member who, through her writing workshops, has continually made space for other artists to share their voices with a wider audience.

The University of Manitoba is proud to award a Doctor of Letters, honoris causa, to Katherena Vermette for her prolific literary contributions which have brought the challenges of Indigenous peoples into the global consciousness.

DISTINGUISHED PROFESSOR AWARD

A distinguished scientist of exceptional international repute, Dr. Mostafa Fayek has made outstanding contributions to the University of Manitoba and the fields of geological sciences, materials science and archaeology.

One of the most influential geochemists in Canada, Dr. Fayek was recruited to UM as a Tier-II NSERC Canada Research Chair in Isotope and Environmental Geochemistry in 2006. Promoted to Full Professor in 2009, Dr. Fayek has served the UM community as Associate Dean of Research, and as Head of the Department of Geological Sciences.

Dr. Fayek is widely recognized internationally for his numerous research contributions on the exploration of uranium deposits, the behavior of uranium in the surficial environment and its importance in nuclear-waste disposal, and understanding large-scale tectonic events in Earth’s history.

His important research on uranium led to invitations to be an expert for the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, and the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna, which represents the focal point of the nuclear energy industry globally.

Dr. Fayek has also been recognized internationally for his development of pioneering methods which have revolutionized the way mineralogists and archeologists source archeologically recovered artifacts along ancient trade routes. Dr. Fayek’s new methodology has successfully answered long-standing questions regarding ancient turquoise trade routes in the southwestern United States and Mexico.

A prolific researcher, he has generated numerous refereed papers in international journals since his arrival at UM, including the editing of three significant Mineralogical Association of Canada Short Course volumes on secondary ion mass spectroscopy, uranium and applications of isotope geochemistry.

An invaluable member of the UM community, he has served on the university Senate Committee for University Research, is a member of the Manitoba Institute of Materials Research Steering Committee, and is the founding Director of the Earth Materials and Archaeometry Center.

The University of Manitoba is proud to award the title of Distinguished Professor to Dr. Mostafa Fayek for demonstrating outstanding distinction in research, scholarship, creative endeavours, professional service and teaching.

ACADEMIC DRESS

Guests at Convocation will readily conclude that the academic dress worn by graduands and members of the academic procession is both colourful and varied. The significance of academic dress may not be so apparent.

Academic dress includes a gown, hood (worn over the shoulders), and a cap or mortarboard. All universities have distinctive academic dress for each degree offered. This explains the variety of academic dress worn by members of the academic procession who have graduated from many different institutions.

The University of Manitoba has patterned its academic dress after the British tradition using the Oxford gown as the model. The Oxford attire is a modified form of the garments worn by its members in medieval times, sometimes attributed to the need for warmth in their damp halls of learning. There are three types of gowns at the University of Manitoba: the Bachelor’s and Master’s gowns are black; the Doctor of Philosophy gown is black with red velvet bars on sleeves and front panels; and the Honorary Doctor’s gown is scarlet. Mortarboards are black with a black tassel and are worn by all graduands except for honorary graduands; they wear round brimmed caps of black velvet with a gold tassel.

It is the hood which signifies the degree to be presented to the graduand. The hoods for Bachelor’s degrees all have the common characteristics of black material edged with white borg material. Hoods for each of the Bachelor’s degrees at the University have a distinctive lining ranging from no lining (black) for Arts, to green for Agriculture, to gold for Science. Similarly hoods for the various Master’s degrees have a distinctive lining but can be differentiated from Bachelor’s hoods by the absence of a borg edging. Hoods for Honorary Doctor’s degrees are scarlet with different linings: white indicates an Honorary Doctor of Laws; yellow, an Honorary Doctor of Science; and slate blue, an Honorary Doctor of Letters. See the following page for a complete listing of the colours of all hood linings.

Senate must approve any changes in academic dress. The Senate Committee on Academic Dress, which includes the Director of the School of Art and the Head of the Department of Interior Design, makes recommendations to Senate on the academic dress of graduands, the Chancellor, the Vice-Chancellor, the Marshalls, and other officers of Convocation.
