University of Winnipeg, a master’s in economics from Western University and a PhD in economics from Carleton University. A passionate teacher and researcher, he has taught economics at Canadian universities for more than three decades.
Michael Benarroch He inspires dynamic collisions of people and ideas, of expertise and passion. This collaborative spirit shapes his leadership. Dr. Michael Benarroch was only three years old when he came to Canada from Tangier, Morocco. His family found a new home and sense of belonging in Winnipeg. He quickly learned about the strength of a community in which everyone feels empowered. He and his three brothers were the first in their family to enroll in university. Something sparked for Dr. Benarroch in the world of economics, with its global nature and impact on public policy and the environment. He holds a BA (Honours) in economics from the
During 21 years with the University of Winnipeg, he was chair of the department of economics (19992007) and acting chair of the department of business and administration (2007). After leading the creation of the university’s Faculty of Business and Economics, he became its founding dean in 2008. In 2011, Dr. Benarroch took the helm at the I.H. Asper School of Business. During his tenure as dean, he oversaw a plan to put the school at the heart of Manitoba’s business and start-up community. The Asper School incorporated experiential learning across all programs, grew international opportunities for students and faculty, improved access for Indigenous students and enhanced its world-class graduate programs. An opportunity at Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson) in 2017 took him east, where he served as provost and vice-president (academic), acting as the institution’s chief academic and operating officer, and a tenured professor. While co-chair of the school’s Truth and Reconciliation Implementation Committee, he formed partnerships with Indigenous faculty, students and community members, removing barriers to bring people together. As the University of Manitoba’s 12th president and vice-chancellor, Dr. Benarroch is committed to advancing the success of UM’s thriving community of innovators, guided and informed by Indigenous knowledges and perspectives. The emergence of the pandemic disrupted Dr. Benarroch’s early vision of how he would engage with the UM community. Often the first in a room to come say, “hello,” he is eager to have more opportunities to see people in person as he leads Manitoba’s research university forward.
