For twelve years, Dr. David Barnard served with great distinction as the University’s 11th President and Vice-Chancellor. Under his leadership, and in collaboration with members of the University of Manitoba community, the University experienced considerable growth, increasing both Indigenous and international student populations, reaching new heights in research accomplishments, becoming a member of the U15 consortia of research-intensive universities in Canada, and achieving unprecedented success in philanthropy through the Front and Centre campaign. In 2011, Dr. Barnard made a formal Statement of Apology and Reconciliation to Residential School Survivors in front of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, the first leader of a post-secondary institution to do so. Dr. Barnard’s legacy is his unwavering commitment to Reconciliation, to advancing and building relationships with Indigenous peoples and communities. The University of Manitoba is honoured to confer upon Dr. David Barnard the title of President Emeritus.
Serving as Director of Libraries at the University of Manitoba from 1990 until her retirement in 2009, Ms. Carolynne Presser provided distinguished service to the University and to the profession. Ms. Presser’s strong advocacy for the Libraries was demonstrated by visionary initiatives including the initiation of major fundraising campaigns, completion of several large building projects, the establishment of endowment funds, and the creation of one of the first institutional repositories in Canada, MSpace. Today, students and faculty continue to learn and thrive in exceptional library spaces completed under Ms. Presser’s tenure including the Neil John Maclean Health Sciences Library, William R. Newman Agriculture Library, Icelandic Reading Room, and Archives & Special Collections. During her term as University Librarian, the oversight and management of the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority hospital libraries was assumed. As part of this structure, the Manitoba Health Information and Knowledge Network was reinvigorated. In addition to her leadership within the University, she held many positions at the provincial, national and international levels including President of the Canadian Association of Research Libraries and board member of the National Library of Canada, Association and Research Libraries, and the Canadian Research Knowledge Network. The University of Manitoba is honoured to confer upon Carolynne Presser the title of Director Emerita.

BA(Hons) (Manitoba), MLS (Western) Serving as the University Librarian in 2008, Karen Adams is an innovative leader who was instrumental in enacting many state-of-the-art advancements to the Libraries during her tenure. Committed to service delivery efficiency and enhancements, she led the formation of the Libraries’ digitization program, implemented a new integrated library system, and created functional and gathering spaces with renovations to the Architecture and Fine Arts Library, the Elizabeth Dafoe Libraries, and the new Music Library in Taché Hall—spaces where students and faculty congregate to learn and grow. During her time at the University, Karen was also President of the Canadian Library Association (CLA) and in 2013 was granted the CLA Outstanding Service to Librarianship Award. Known for her unfailing encouragement, Karen challenged and empowered library staff to be innovative yet practical, and her calmness and stability fostered a fertile and collegial work environment. The University of Manitoba is honoured to confer upon Karen Adams the title of University Librarian Emerita.
BA(Hons) (Winnipeg), MLS (Toronto), MA (Manitoba) A member of the Libraries community for two decades before becoming an Associate University Librarian in 1998, Donna Breyfogle oversaw numerous departments and supported innovations to make more scholarly content available to the University community. Donna led the development of the Libraries’ digitization plan, the initiative to migrate print journal subscriptions to electronic, and the development and management of the collections to support the University’s programs of teaching and research. She was responsible for the Libraries’ acquisitions budget and worked with regional and national consortia on licensing electronic resources and special projects to ensure the preservation of rare and Canadian publications. Her commitment to support innovative ways to make scholarly content more accessible was a consistent priority. Donna participated in many Libraries, University, and national committees and was active in professional associations including the Canadian Association of College and University Libraries and Manitoba Library Association. In addition to a significant administrative portfolio, Donna engaged in research on the history of linguistics, and the life and career of Elizabeth Dafoe. The University of Manitoba is honoured to confer upon Donna Breyfogle the title of Librarian Emerita.

BA, MAS (UBC), PhD (UT Austin) Serving as Head of the University of Manitoba Archives & Special Collections from 1998 until her retirement in 2020, Dr. Shelley Sweeney left behind a distinguished record of service to the University of Manitoba, the province of Manitoba, and the Canadian and international archival profession. Through Dr. Sweeney’s leadership, the UM Libraries obtained and protected archival holdings that might otherwise have been lost, and Manitoba’s archives and documentary heritage benefited as a result. She helped create a renovated state-of-the-art University Archives and Special Collections facility and established it as a “Centre of Excellence” for records of the paranormal, Inuit Art, and Indigenous peoples. Serving as Co-Chair of the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation Implementation Committee, she was instrumental in establishing the centre that would steward the records of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission on Residential Schools. Dr. Sweeney has supported research projects, championed archival holdings and stewarded these collections safely for future generations. Her commitment to the field is also demonstrated through her service on numerous Canadian and international archival associations. The University of Manitoba is honoured to confer upon Dr. Shelley Sweeney the title of Librarian Emerita.
BEd, MEd, PhD (Manitoba) Serving as Dean of Education from 2013 to 2020, Dr. David Mandzuk provided outstanding administrative leadership to the faculty and to the institution as a whole. He joined the University of Manitoba in 2000 and has been an extremely effective and highly-regarded professor. At the University level, Dr. Mandzuk has often been called upon to lead, co-lead or participate in high priority initiatives including the Faculty Partners for Reconciliation Project team, the Advisory Committee to review the Role/Mandate of the Vice-Provost (Indigenous Engagement), and the Experiential Education Task Force, just to name a few. Provincially, he served for 3 years as a United Way Winnipeg cabinet member (University and Colleges Division) and for 6 years, he served as the co-chair of the University of Manitoba’s United Way campaign. At the national level, he played many executive roles with the Association of Canadian Deans of Education and was recognized for his significant contributions with an Honorary Lifetime Membership Award in 2020. Internationally, he was the Chair of the International Council on Education for Teaching from 2015 to 2017 and was appointed as an Emeritus Board member in 2019. Dr. Mandzuk’s outstanding academic administrative career and commitment to the University has always been carried out with grace and integrity. A Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Globalization and Cultural Studies, Dr. Diana Brydon joined the University in 2006.
An exceptional sociology and criminology scholar, Dr. Elizabeth Comack has fashioned a productive research program focused on social justice issues. She is a leader in the development of the sociology of law and feminist criminology in Canada, and has made distinguished contributions pertaining to Indigenous peoples and their colonial relationship with the Canadian criminal justice system.
She is the founding director of the Centre for Globalization and Cultural Studies and an internationally acclaimed literary critic known for her multifaceted and groundbreaking contributions to postcolonial literary and cultural studies. Through her research, Dr. Brydon has assessed and developed ways in which research into globalization and the analysis of cultural practices can contribute to furthering trans-cultural understanding and interdisciplinary collaboration to address some of the challenges posed by globalization. Elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 2008, Dr. Brydon has published numerous books, special journal issues, refereed articles, book chapters, and book reviews. Her work has been translated into Chinese, Polish, and Portuguese. The University of Manitoba is honoured to confer upon Dr. Diana Brydon the title of Distinguished Professor Emeritus.
Dr. Comack has a longstanding involvement with the Manitoba Research Alliance, a coalition of academic and community partners with extensive research networks, community engagements and policy initiatives that has been awarded millions of dollars in research funding. She has disseminated her profoundly impactful research through 13 books, as well as scores of book chapters, articles, and reports. Her book, Indians Wear Red, won the Alexander Kennedy Isbister Award for Non-Fiction in 2014. A two-time recipient of the Outstanding Teacher Award, Dr. Comack has a long and enviable record of undergraduate and graduate teaching excellence. A dedicated citizen of the University, Dr. Comack has served as Sociology Department Head and devoted considerable time to collegial governance. In recognition of her accomplishments, Dr. Comack was appointed as a Distinguished Professor in 2020. Joining the University of Manitoba in 1989 as an Associate Professor and Canada Research Fellow, Dr. Ellen Judd served as Head of the Department of Anthropology from 1998 to 2003. She was named Distinguished Professor in 2010.
Dr. Jan Oleszkiewicz is a Distinguished Professor in environmental engineering at the University of Manitoba and serves as President of JAAO Environmental Engineering Ltd.
A preeminent researcher and anthropologist, Dr. Judd’s research is concentrated in the anthropology of contemporary China. Her ethnographic work spans decades, including studies of the rural economic reform, women’s indigenous initiatives for change, and rebuilding cooperative health care. The common theme has been exploring how programs of profound social transformation are engaged, considered and diversely remade in everyday life. She is widely published internationally, and two ethnographies and several articles have been translated and published in China. Her work contributed to the early decision by Canada to support womanwork in rural China in the 1980s. In 2006 Dr. Judd was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, and in 2012–2013 she became President of the Canadian Anthropology Society. The University of Manitoba is honoured to confer upon Dr. Ellen Judd the title of Distinguished Professor Emerita.

A groundbreaking researcher and an expert in wastewater treatment and biosolids processing, Dr. Oleszkiewicz has served as a consultant or technical advisor to governments of over forty municipalities worldwide. He served in an advisory role for the upgrade of all three Winnipeg wastewater treatment plants and has long been at the forefront of research in nutrient removal and recovery from wastewater. While his research, journal papers and conference proceedings have been widely published, Dr. Oleszkiewicz is also an inventor with many registered patents. As a Professor, he has supervised countless master’s and doctoral students and trained multitudes of wastewater plant operators in facilities in Canada, the United States, and the European Union. The University of Manitoba is honoured to confer upon Dr. Jan Oleszkiewicz the title of Distinguished Professor Emeritus.

Since beginning his career at the University as a scholar of Canadian literature in 1972, Dr. David Arnason has made immeasurable contributions to the intellectual and creative excellence of the Department of English, Theatre, Film & Media, and has helped to establish it as a world-class centre for both the production and critical analysis of Canadian literature. A celebrated novelist, short story writer, poet, editor and scholar of international renown, Dr. Arnason is one of the founders of Turnstone Press, an independent press now in its fifth decade of activity, and a recipient of the 125th Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada Medal. Over the past fifty years, his love for writing, his dedication to his students and to the study of literature, and his boundless creative energy have been a source of inspiration for many. Demonstrated by his extraordinary collection of novels and creative works, Dr. Arnason is one of Canadian literature’s well-known authors, a respected scholar and literary critic of international renown. Since joining the University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Education in 1979, Dr. Orest Cap has made a significant scholarly impact in his field. An author and publisher of countless academic texts, peer reviewed journal articles and conference proceedings, Dr. Cap was awarded over two million dollars in funding for his numerous research projects including digital technologies, Human Ecology, Vocational/ Technical Studies, and educational gerontology. He has held several administrative roles including Acting Associate Dean, Acting Department Head and Director of the Imperial Oil Academy for the Learning of Mathematics. Dr. Cap received the Outstanding Teacher Award in 2014, the President’s Outreach Award in 1999 for his contributions to international education and training, and the Dr. Michael and Murial Ewanchuk Award in 2011 for his academic exploration of Ukrainian Canadian history. In 2013, he was presented the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee medal. The University of Manitoba is honoured to confer upon Dr. Orest Cap the title of Professor Emeritus.

Since joining the University of Manitoba as a faculty member in 1993, Dr. Judy Chipperfield has made significant interdisciplinary contributions as an internationally-recognized scholar in the psychology of health promotion and disease prevention. Her work explores the implications for improving the health and longevity of older Canadians, offsetting caregiver burden, and reducing healthcare costs and has been supported by national funding agencies and disseminated in scholarly journals and government reports. An expert in her field, Dr. Chipperfield has served in an advisory capacity, both provincially and nationally, to shape the future directions of health research in Canada. Her commitment to students that involved exposing them to opportunities and research networks across the globe has helped launch the careers of many young scholars. Dr. Chipperfield has received many awards of recognition over her career, including the Faculty of Arts’ Professor of the Year Award, the Canadian Association on Gerontology Lifetime Contributions to Gerontology Award, and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research Investigator Award, Partnership Award, Mid-career Aging Award and Knowledge Translation Prize. Since joining the Department of English, Theatre, Film & Media as a scholar of American and Canadian literature in 1973, Dr. Dennis Cooley has made outstanding contributions to the department as a respected teacher, author and mentor. An internationally gifted poet and critic of Canadian literature, Dr. Cooley has published numerous poetic publications, articles and essays on a number of literary topics. His connection to prairie life is exhibited through his expansive collection of creative works. One of the founders of Turnstone Press and the Manitoba Writers’ Guild, Dr. Cooley is committed to the dissemination of manuscripts and awardwinning creations. He is a department citizen and committed to the service within and beyond the University. He has served as editor for several Canadian writing and poetry magazines including the Journal of Canadian Fiction, Arts Manitoba and Border Crossings. Dr. Cooley has won several awards, including the Olive Beatrice Stanton Award for teaching excellence, an Outreach Award, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Manitoba Writers’ Guild and a Lifetime Member Award from the League of Canadian Poets. An award-winning researcher and teacher, Dr. Yatta Kanu joined the Faculty of Education in 1998. Dr. Kanu’s research in the areas of educational needs and barriers of marginalized and stigmatized groups received over one million dollars in grants, as well as additional funding from the World Bank, UNESCO and the Aga Khan Foundation, and has been widely disseminated in books, book chapters, articles and peer-reviewed publications. Dr. Kanu provided a challenging, criticallyoriented learning environment for hundreds of pre-service teachers and graduate students, and her studies on teaching and learning with Canadian Indigenous students have been pivotal in guiding new program development in the faculty, the province and across the nation. Appointed to the School of Art in 1973, Professor David McMillan established a robust photography program at the University of Manitoba upon his arrival. The program offers exposure to a wide array of photography concepts including applied photography, the history of photography, as well as darkroom facilities and digital photography. An outstanding teacher, Professor McMillan has developed inspirational courses in the area of photography, transformed experiences and shaped internationally renowned photographers. Over four decades of exemplary service, Professor McMillan was a recipient of numerous grants and awards and served on many School committees, funding juries and as a member of the Winnipeg Art Gallery Board. Professor McMillan has lectured and been a visiting artist at countless universities and art galleries, and has participated in numerous group shows and exhibitions throughout Canada and internationally. The University of Manitoba is honoured to confer upon Professor David McMillan the title of Professor Emeritus.

Since 1999, Dr. Kurt Markstrom has made important contributions to the University of Manitoba. His commitment to high-quality, engaging programs is reflected through the courses he teaches: core classical curriculum and popular music, for which he has received teaching awards from the Universities of Manitoba and Toronto.
A member of the University of Manitoba community since 1997, Dr. Ralph Mason is recognized as an award-winning educator and scholar.
He is an internationally recognized scholar of 18th century Italian opera and the authority on the composers Leonardo Vinci and Nicola Porpora. His book The Operas of Leonardo Vinci, Napoletano and his critical edition of the Porpora Vespers 1745 have received international awards. He was the co-founder of the Progetto Leonardo Vinci preparing performance scores of Eraclea and Catone in Utica for revival at Festival dell’Aurora. Catone, which was used by Max Cencic for the acclaimed Decca recording, has been prepared as a scholarly edition to be the first volume of the Leonardo Vinci Opera Omnia. He is currently editing his reconstruction of the first Canadian opera, Joseph Quesnel’s Colas et Colinette (Montreal, 1790), and writing a book on the composer/playwright. The University of Manitoba is honoured to confer upon Dr. Kurt Markstrom the title of Professor Emeritus.

His commitment to teaching excellence has been recognized through numerous awards including the Murray McPherson Award for Excellence in Mathematics Teaching in 2019, and the Student’s Teacher Recognition Award for Significant Contribution to Excellence in Teaching in 2009. Joining the University of Manitoba in 1990 following a distinguished tenure as an archivist at the then National Archives of Canada, Dr. Thomas Nesmith founded archival studies within the Joint Master’s Program in History, making the University of Manitoba only the second Canadian university outside Quebec to offer a graduate degree for completion of a curriculum in archival studies.
A respected scholar and outstanding educator, Professor Philip Osborne enjoyed a 41-year career in the Faculty of Law.
Dr. Nesmith made significant contributions to the successful bid for the archives of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which resulted in the creation of the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation. His award-winning publications fundamentally shifted how archivists, scholars and others understand archives and archival work. A Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and the Association of Canadian Archivists, Dr. Nesmith holds an outstanding achievement award from the Faculty of Arts and a lifetime service award from the Association for Manitoba Archives. His book The Law of Torts (now in its sixth edition) is considered an invaluable contribution to the understanding of tort law and the social policies underlying the law. It has been cited by many courts including the Supreme Court of Canada. He has also written extensively for scholarly publications and has written many draft reports for the Manitoba Law Reform Commission. Professor Osborne served as Chair and member of many faculty committees, was a regular speaker for a wide range of community groups and taught across many faculties including Dentistry, Management, Engineering and at the Institute of Chartered Accountants. A beloved Professor of Law, Professor Osborne was a recipient of the Saunderson Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1979. Dr. Russell Smandych Professor Emeritus, Faculty of Arts (2021) BA (Saskatchewan), MA (Simon Fraser), PhD (Toronto) As a member of the Department of Sociology and Criminology’s faculty since 1986, Dr. Russell Smandych has made significant contributions to research, teaching, and university and professional service in the areas of socio-historical, youth and global criminology. Dr. Smandych’s interdisciplinary and comparative research ranges from his early socio-historical work on the development of poor relief, criminal justice and penitentiary systems in the 19th century, to his more recent widely cited publications on British colonial legal history, settler colonial law and Indigenous peoples, and comparative youth justice system reform. His consistent and high level of scholarly activities are showcased through his multiple published works, his dedication to student success and his international collaborations and recognition. In addition, Dr. Smandych’s commitment to service is demonstrated by his administrative participation at the University and the wider profession. He has served on several editorial boards of international peer-review journals and as President of the Canadian Law and Society Association. Dr. Johann de Vries Dean Emeritus, Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences (2021) BChD, BChD(Hons), MDent (Pretoria) Dean of the Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry from 1998–2006, Dr. Johann de Vries brought transformation and vision to the College. During his tenure as Dean, he established Dentistry’s first Strategic Plan, which optimized the environment for student learning, introduced student support structures and established teaching clinics. He implemented a new organizational structure, established the Centre for Community Oral Health which provides oral healthcare for underserved populations and oversaw the opening of the DentSim, a state-ofthe-art simulation clinic and the first of its kind in Canada. Dr. de Vries received the President’s Award of Merit for Outstanding Service to the Profession from the Manitoba Dental Association, was the first academic member on the Canadian Dental Association (CDA) Governing Board and received its Distinguished Service Award. He was awarded the American Dental Education Association’s Gies Award for Innovation, Vision and Achievement in Dental Education— the highest award in dental education. Dr. Katherine (Karin) M. Wittenberg Dean Emeritus, Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences (2020) BSC, MSc, PhD (Manitoba) Dr. Wittenberg began her distinguished academic career in the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences in 1985. She was appointed the first female Dean of the faculty in 2014. Through her roots as an animal scientist, Dr. Wittenberg played a leading role in the establishment of the Bruce D. Campbell Farm and Food Discovery Centre which engages both students and the general public in the use of science and technology in modern food production. Her research in the area of animal science was well funded with a career accumulation of $26M as principal investigator and co-investigator. She received the Canadian Society of Animal Science Fellowship Award in 2013. As Dean, Dr. Wittenberg played a significant role in fundraising, attracting over $11.7 million to create awards and scholarships, as well as funding classroom and research facility upgrades. She also spearheaded greater Indigenous inclusion in the Faculty, through establishing an Indigenous Scholar position, creating Indigenous spaces, and attracting funds to support summer jobs for Indigenous students. In addition, she led the development of the Faculty’s first Strategic Research Plan and provided the faculty with a platform to experience significant research funding growth. For much of his career, Dr. Amiro held administrative positions and remained an accomplished researcher and dedicated teacher while serving in these roles. He secured over $4.7 million in research grants, including one grant of over $3 million for greenhouse gas research in beef production systems. Dr. Amiro has published more than 100 papers in peer-reviewed journals, has been ranked by Stanford University as being in the world’s top 2% of scientists, and was recognized as a Fellow of the Canadian Society of Agricultural and Forest Meteorology. Dr. Amiro has been an extraordinary and versatile teacher, instructing a variety of courses and mentoring many undergraduate and graduate students. MD (Manitoba) Recognized internationally as a leader in pediatric allergy and asthma research, Dr. Allan Becker joined the Department of Pediatrics and Child Health in 1985 and served as Section Head of Allergy and Clinical Immunology from 2005–2019. As a founding member of the Canadian Network for Asthma Care, Dr. Becker led the development of the first national Certification for Asthma Educators as well as an Asthma Educator Education Program, AsthmaTrec, which is now used across Canada. He was lead author of the first Canadian Pediatric Asthma Guidelines and a member of the Scientific Committee of the Global Initiative for Asthma. Dr. Becker’s work has generated more than $32M in research funds, and he has published more than 300 articles. His extraordinary scholarly work has led to a paradigm change in the treatment of acute asthma in children. He has received numerous awards that include the Canadian Medical Association Honorary Member Award, the Dr. John M. Dr. Stefan Cenkowski has had a distinguished 32 year career in the Department of Biosystems Engineering. Dr. Cenkowski has been recognized by the Canadian Society for Bioengineering multiple times for his contributions to research in bioprocess and food engineering: he received the John Clark Award for outstanding contribution to teaching and research in 2005, earned Fellow status for his exceptional contributions in bioprocess engineering in 2012, and received the esteemed Maple Leaf Award in 2015. A distinguished scholar and teacher, Dr. Cenkowski contributed to the field through books, book chapters, patents, publications, conference presentations and technical reports. He served as editor-in-chief for the journal Canadian Biosystems Engineering and served on many conference organizing committees. Since beginning his exceptional academic career at the University of Manitoba in 1969, distinguished mathematician Dr. Michael Doob made outstanding contributions to the field of mathematics. A researcher in algebraic graph theory, Dr. Doob was responsible for co-authoring one of the most influential monographs on spectra of graphs, whose citations number in the thousands. He is well known in the graph theory community, with a graph named after him—the Doob graph. In 1990, he established one of the first non-commercial publishing offices at the University of Manitoba and handled the complete publication process from manuscript receipt to camera-ready copy utilising emerging computer technologies. Dr. Doob spearheaded the digitization of the pre-digital Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS) journals, which benefited the entire mathematical community. In recognition of his exemplary work, he received the Graham Wright Service Award and was bestowed a Fellow of the CMS. BSc(Hons) (Queen’s), PhD (Western) Recognized as an innovative researcher, educator and leader in the field of immunology, Dr. Kent HayGlass made important research contributions to understanding how our immune system functions in good health and disease. He studied the way that maladaptive immune regulation causes allergic disorders to arise in children, investigating the immunological mechanisms responsible for development and maintenance of good health during pregnancy, and from infancy through adulthood. Dr. HayGlass was a recipient of numerous teaching awards, the Bowman Rh Institute Foundation Research Award, and the Canadian Society of Immunology Cinader Award. Most notably, he was elected to the Collegium Internationale Allergologium as the youngest and sixth Canadian for his seminal contributions to immunology/allergy discovery research. Internationally recognized as a champion of innovation in cervical cancer screening and prevention, Dr. Robert Lotocki brought his leadership and commitment to teaching and research to the University of Manitoba for 38 years.
A clinician and leader who has dedicated nearly 50 years to Indigenous health, Dr. Michael Moffatt has held clinical, research and administrative roles in pediatrics and child health and community health sciences.
He is a widely respected clinical teacher. He served as Residency Program Director and Gynecological Oncology Fellowship Director and has received many awards for his teaching excellence including the Council on Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology (CREOG) National Faculty Award, the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada (SOGC) Carl Nimrod Award, and the PARIM Professionalism and Mentorship Award. As Medical Director of CervixCheck he modernized cervical screening methods in Manitoba and developed a provincial registry. A champion of innovation in cervical cancer screening and prevention, particularly for women in underserved areas, he received the UM’s Clinical Service Recognition Award. Dr. Moffatt was appointed the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority’s executive director for quality, safety and research and evaluation and was instrumental in building an embedded research unit that performs primary health research and community health assessments and fosters the use of evidence in health care decision-making. Dr. Moffatt’s continuous commitment to Indigenous health has inspired many cohorts of graduate students, medical trainees, residents and physicians to the important work of Ongomiizwin Health Services. His research career has focused on the epidemiology of health in Indigenous communities and he is widely published and funded by external granting agencies. BSc (York), PhD (Alberta) Since 1985, Dr. Michael Mowat has been a leading cancer researcher at the University of Manitoba and CancerCare Manitoba Research Institute. He has served as a teacher and research mentor and as professor in the departments of biochemistry and medical genetics, and physiology and pathophysiology. Dr. Mowat is internationally known for his seminal publication in the journal Nature (1985) which showed for the first time that mutations in the TP53 gene were important in mechanisms of cancer transformation. He discovered that TP53 is a tumour suppressor, not a tumour-causing gene. Today, TP53 is the most studied gene in human disease.
BA(Hons), MA (Western), PhD (Alberta) Dr. Elizabeth Ready is a leader in the health, physical activity and wellness community. Since joining the University of Manitoba in 1981, she proved to be a highly successful researcher and a well-respected mentor. Throughout her 37-year career, Dr. Ready was a lead and collaborator in nearly 50 funded research projects, totaling over $2.7 million in research funding. She published prolifically and gave hundreds of community talks. Her research spanned the fields of exercise physiology, health promotion, aging, community development, interprofessional education and collaborative practice. She was dedicated to enhancing physical activity supports to marginalized groups.
A dedicated teacher, Dr. Mowat has supervised 20 graduate students and post-doctoral fellows and supervised over 30 undergraduate projects and summer research assistants.
Dr. Ready was an innovative teacher and admired mentor to over 85 graduate students. She served in countless national organizations, including the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, as Director of the Applied Health Sciences PhD Program, and as Undergraduate Chair, Graduate Program Chair, and Associate Dean (Academic) in the Faculty of Kinesiology and Recreation Management. A trailblazer throughout her career, she was the first woman elected to the board of the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology.

Her research examining cardiac nursing and women’s health resulted in the innovative development of Clinical Nursing Research Associate roles in the emergency department and cardiac sciences programs in Winnipeg’s tertiary care health centres. Dr. Kumar Sharma has been a world-renowned researcher and professor within the Department of Physics & Astronomy for nearly 40 years. He has dedicated much of his career to the understanding of ion trap-based mass measurement of radioactive isotopes. His years of experience and research in this area lead to his project, the Canadian Penning Trap (CPT), where his research has significantly contributed to our knowledge and understanding of nuclear properties and key astrophysical questions such as the nucleosynthesis of heavy elements. Dr. Sharma instilled a passion for innovation in 21 graduate students and postdocs, and 22 students at the undergraduate level. Dr. Sharma has authored 117 peer-reviewed articles. For seven years he served as the Department Head of Physics and Astronomy and was appointed Chair of the Division of Nuclear Physics in the Canadian Association of Physicists. Dr. Sharma also co-founded the Canadian Institute of Nuclear Physics, while serving on the NSERC Subatomic Grand Selection Committee and chairing the Commission C2 of the International Union of Physics and Applied Physics. For 35 years, Dr. Bogdan Slominski has contributed immensely to the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences, making significant contributions to the teaching, research and outreach missions of the University. An outstanding researcher, Slominski has developed a world-class research program in nutritional biochemistry with a special focus on poultry nutrition. He is also a leader in evaluating new feed ingredients and the use of exogenous enzymes, and has contributed to the development of prebiotics and natural alternative to antibiotics in poultry and swine nutrition. Dr. Slominski is also an enthusiastic teacher, having taught five different graduate courses and supervised 20 post-graduate theses and 19 post-doctoral fellows and visiting scientists. He has received the NSERC Synergy Award, and the National Research Council/Alberta Science and Technology Award for Innovation. Now retired, Slominski is still active at the university, currently holding five major research grants for a total of $2.2 million and supervising graduate students and a technician. A groundbreaking researcher and influential teacher with a distinguished record of professional service and scholarly achievements, Dr. Warrington was the recipient of numerous awards including the Canadian Society of Allergy and Clinical Immunology Award for Research in Immunology, the Jerry Dolovich Award for Contributions to Allergy and Clinical Immunology in Canada, and the Distinguished Canadian Society of Allergy and Clinical Immunology Member Award. Dr. Warrington also served as Examiner, Chief Examiner and Vice-Chair in Clinical Immunology and Allergy for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and received their prestigious award for 30 years of volunteer service. In his 25 years at the University, Dr. West became well known for his surgical skill, his unmatched clinical care, and his bedside manner. Well respected as the epitome of professionalism, his voice of reason was often sought out by both colleagues and students. Dr. West served in myriad roles, among them Head of Neurosurgery; Associate Dean, Postgraduate Medical Education and Associate Dean, Professionalism. Dr. West’s leadership and innovation have resulted in key clinical care advancements including the Gamma Knife Stereotactic Radiosurgery program, the Center for Surgical Innovation in the Kleyson Institute for Advanced Medicine, and the Stereotactic Body Radiation program using Varian Edge technology. His sustained contributions to medical education and clinical excellence have earned him many awards, including the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for contributions to Neurosurgery, the Distinguished Service Award from Doctors Manitoba, the Canadian Association of Medical Education Certificate of Merit, and the Order of Manitoba in 2019. Dr. Teresa Zelinski Professor Emerita, Max Rady College of Medicine, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences (2021) BSc, MSc, PhD (Manitoba) Internationally recognized researcher in the area of human red cell genomics, Dr. Teresa Zelinski was a celebrated professor in the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences from 1984 to 2020. During her illustrious career, Dr. Zelinski received more than $3 million in grant funding and shared her work in the field of transfusion medicine around the world. She published 80 original papers and three book chapters in her area of focus. A committed teacher, Dr. Zelinski supervised and advised many graduate students, and was a member of review committees for graduate programs in the Departments of Medical Microbiology and Biochemistry and Medical Genetics. For more than a decade, Dr. Zelinski served as Secretary for the International Society of Blood Transfusion Committee on Terminology for Red Cell Surface Antigens and as a member of the Scientific Section Advisory Committee for the American Association of Blood Banks. The University of Manitoba is honoured to confer upon Dr. Teresa Zelinski the title of Professor Emerita.
