Plasma TV’s Versus Live Saving Proteins from Blood Plasma These days we all know about plasma televisions, but not everyone knows about the vital live saving proteins that are harvested from human blood plasma. Human plasma is a vital starting material for the manufacture of many life-saving drugs. It is the clear, straw-colored liquid portion of blood that remains after red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets and other cellular components are removed. It is the single largest component of human blood containing about 90% water, as well as salts, enzymes, antibodies and other proteins. Plasma is collected from healthy donors using a process called plasmapheresis where the donor’s blood is separated using a spinning membrane to separate the liquid portion (plasma) from the blood cells like red blood cells, lymphocytes and platelets. The cellular parts are returned to the donors and the plasma is collected, tested and shipped to be fractionated into drugs. Most North American plasma is collected from donors that are compensated for their time associated with donation which can range from one to three hours. Because the blood cells are given back at each donation, donors can donate up to twice every 7 days with at least one day between donations, as the body can quickly replace the plasma proteins. Obviously only healthy people, that are free in infections, can donate. They help produce therapies that treat people with rare, chronic diseases and disorders such as primary immunodeficiency, hemophilia and a genetic lung disease, as well as in the treatment of trauma, burns and shock. For example, Immune Globulin Intravenous (IGIV) is used to treat a wide array of diseases and can only be made from a large number of plasma donors. Its use in Canada is growing steadily at over 5% a year so demand for plasma is also growing. As a consequence, the blood operators have to import up to 70% of it plasma or plasma products from outside the country. Did you know that a large number of patients depend on protein therapies derived from human plasma and blood donors in Canada? For example:
24 | SPRING/SUMMER 2018 ACTIVITY GUIDE
• 1200 plasma donations are required to treat one patient with hemophilia, a bleeding disorder. • 130 donations to treat one patient with primary immunodeficiency, condition where people can not make functional antibodies to fight infections. • 900 donations are required to treat one alpha-1 patient, a disorder that affects the lungs. They typically require on-going infusions throughout their lives as they are chronic diseases so plasma is always required. Next time you sit down in front of your plasma TV please think about that other plasma and the need to donate your time if you are healthy and want to save lives.
