Membership with Recreation Services is open to U of M students, staff, alumni and the general public. With over 1 million square feet of space and equipment devoted to fitness, recreation, leisure and sport, we have everything you need to help make active living an essential part of your day. Our state-of-the-art Active Living Centre boasts over 1,300 units of equipment and accessories and is the largest facility of its kind in Winnipeg!

Consult with our certified fitness attendants Our certified fitness staff are here to help you. If you would like a tour or have questions about our equipment or your workout, drop by and speak to one of our attendants. What do we mean by Certified? All fitness attendants have or are working towards a degree in Kinesiology, and are certified by the Canadian Society of Exercise Physiology, National Strength and Conditioning Association, or the Manitoba Fitness Council, as well as being equipped with CPR, First Aid and AED training.

Boasting natural light and a 38, 000 sq.-ft. fitness floor, you will find everything you need from cardio and resistance training to free weights and a 200-metre running track.

These short info sessions will introduce different components of the fitness floor and how to safely and effectively use equipment such as machines, free weights and other portable equipment. Regularly check our Rec Services App or the Fitness Attendant desk for dates/times. (These sessions can also be done for small groups upon request.) GROUP FITNESS CLASSES THESE CLASSES ARE INCLUDED WITH YOUR MEMBERSHIP AT NO EXTRA COST. All fitness levels and abilities are welcome to participate as these are non-competitive and fun programs that aim to make everyone feel good. Modifications and intensity options are provided in all classes! Classes are offered Monday to Friday in the early morning, mid day, evenings and in the mornings on both Saturdays and Sundays. All fitness instructors employed by Recreation Services are accredited through the Manitoba Fitness Council (MFC) and other recognized national/international training organizations. No registration required. Simply show up and join in on the fun!

AGING ACTIVELY

Aqua Interval (Shallow) H2O

Designed with our 55+ populations in mind. Non-members may register for these programs Members are encouraged to register for these classes to guarantee their spot. Drop-in participants will be accepted as space allows.

HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) is getting wet! Experience an aqua workout in the shallow end that uses interval training formats where you alternate between working hard and recovering. This total body workout uses the natural resistance of the water to challenge the body.

Aging Actively Aquafitness

Aqua Zumba (Shallow H2O)

Enjoy the buoyancy and resistance effects of water in this fun and refreshing exercise class. Both shallow and deep water workouts will provide cardio, muscular endurance and flexibility without any jarring impact.

Have some fun in the shallow end of the pool and get energized with Zumba in the water while improving your cardiovascular endurance and toning your body. Nonmembers may register for this program. Members may secure a spot in this class by registering at no extra cost.

Aging Actively Resistance Training Enjoy a social atmosphere while you work on general muscular conditioning (strength and endurance), flexibility, stability and balance; resulting in greater mobility and reduced injuries.

Aging Actively Gentle Yoga This yoga experience will leave you feeling calm, refreshed and full of energy while challenging both your balance and flexibility to improve your quality of life.

AQUATIC WORKOUT

Get active in the pool with an intense, low impact workout.

Aqua Boot Camp (Deep H2O) A fast-paced circuit style interval training workout in the deep end of the pool for those who want to work hard but keep it low impact. Participants must be comfortable being in the DEEP END. Aqua belts provided.

Come and get your sweat on on in some fun cycling or routine based classes.

Cycle Xpress Kick your regular workout routine into high gear while riding to the beat of energy infused music. Experience a variety of class styles from intervals to real-road rides.

MĂŠtis Jigging A blend of French, Scottish, Irish and First Nations dance styles. It is a high energy dance with quick footwork, so come prepared to work up a good sweat!

Reebok Step Enjoy a cardio workout using Reebok step benches that will keep you on your toes with fun routines.

Pow Wow Everyone is welcome to join the group in a safe, family friendly environment where participants will learn different pow wow styles, along with song and drum teachings. No experience needed. Regalia not required.

GROUP FITNESS CLASSES Zumba

Tabata Plus

Zumba is a high energy, Latin-inspired, dance-fitness class that will have you dancing to a variety of rhythms. There are no rules except to have fun, sweat and get lost in the music! Ditch the gym workout and join the dance party! Non-members may register for the weekend and evening Zumba. Members may secure a spot in this class by registering at no extra cost.

Take your workout to the next level by alternating between a 4 min set of Strength Training and a 4 min set of Tabata. Strength training sets may or may not be timed and emphasis will be on lower reps and heavier loads. Tabata sets will be 20 sec of hard work followed by 10 sec of rest, repeated 8 times, and will focus on bringing your heart rate up. A variety of portable equipment will be used for this class.

COMBO CLASSES / HIIT TRAINING Workouts to maximize your time and cover all your exercise needs.

HIIT Circuit This interval training workout will utilize a variety of work to rest formats as well as different portable equipment and body weight exercise to challenge your muscular strength, muscular endurance, cardiovascular system, agility, power and coordination. Get ready to work hard for awesome results.

Cycle & Strength Challenge yourself with a combination of our Powerhouse + Cycle Xpress classes. Work your entire body and all components of fitness‌ muscular strength and endurance, power, coordination, aerobic and anaerobic fitness.

Triple Threat Cover all your bases in one fitness class by doing 15 min cardio, 15 min strength, 15 min core work and yoga based stretching. A variety of portable equipment will be used for a fun and efficient workouts.

Ultimate Tabata Using a 2:1 ratio this HIIT (high intensity interval training) workout will challenge you to vigorously push your cardio, muscular strength and muscular endurance abilities. A variety of portable equipment and body weight exercises will be used.

The Aquatics programs are designed to allow for progression with classes focusing on stroke development and swimming techniques. These low-impact classes are an excellent form of exercise as they develop strength, endurance, and cardio.

Introduction to Swimming It is never too late to learn how to swim. This course is for new swimmers and is designed to help participants progress at their own rate. The course will cover: basic floatation, movement and breathing skills and an introduction to swim strokes. Course will be primarily in the shallow end. Recreation Services offers a 35 ft. climbing wall with varying levels of difficulty and four auto-belays. Our climbing programs are designed to allow for progression and teach fundamentals and advanced techniques. Climbing is an excellent way to challenge yourself mentally, get a full body workout and develop flexibility.

Step 1: Climbing Orientation

Climbing Fundamentals

General orientation for basic climbing facility rules and safety. Includes instruction on how to properly use the auto-belay systems, basic climbing terminology and technique. All equipment is provided. Orientations can be completed during any scheduled Open Climb time. Cost: $20

With your climbing partner, learn to climb safely and independently using climbing rope systems. The primary focus is on the fundamentals of top rope climbing, including belay techniques, basic climbing knots, use of equipment, safety and communication. Our comprehensive services will assist you in defining your current state of fitness, improving on areas of weakness and enhancing areas of strength. A safe, effective and individualized program can be developed according to your needs, interests and goals. Law Enforcement Conditioning Camp

The UofM provides physical occupational testing for the Winnipeg Police Service, Winnipeg Fire & Paramedics, Regional Health Authorities, Canada Border Services Agency and many more organizations. We can also work with employees to ensure that staff is physically able to meet the demands of their position prior to employment or as an assessment to monitor their current abilities.

This training camp will help potential law enforcement professionals prepare for and improve their chances of successful completion of the WPS-PAT, PARE and other law enforcement tests. It includes HIIT, core training, push-pull machine techniques, and working with elements required for any law enforcement testing.
