TO THE CLASS OF 2021 This is a momentous occasion; for you, and our community. We hope you can sense all of us—the thousands of us—here with you. Celebrating you. Though we are unable to gather on campus, we have embraced this new way of honouring your achievements. We are incredibly proud of you. Activist Vandana Shiva says, “Hope is a duty.” Let us act with hope. Let us remain open to the idea of possibility; of working together. All people. All disciplines, all communities and all races since diversity will only strengthen our society. Now, more than ever, we need to work together. Communities thrive though connections—ones that exchange ideas, spark innovation, meet challenges, respect and learn from one another. As you start your new journey, you’ll notice how UM is closely linked to others throughout Manitoba and around the world. We are connected through research, partnerships with Indigenous communities and our ties with local organizations and industry. Along the way, you will also encounter fellow alumni. Today, you join their network of more than 181,000 UM grads living in 139 countries around the world. Our alumni are our strongest ambassadors, advocates, champions and thought-leaders. They elevate our communities and propel us to make a difference. During these challenging times, we have a responsibility to turn our ideas, knowledge and skills into a new path forward for all of us. We know you are ready. Our time—your time—is now. Congratulations on your graduation!

PROCEDURE FOR SELECTING HONORARY GRADUANDS Nominations of distinguished persons for honorary degrees are accepted from both the University community and the general public. The Senate Committee on Honorary Degrees assesses the nominations using specific criteria which include distinguished achievement in scholarship, the arts or public service. Only those nominations which, in the opinion of the committee, meet the criteria for an honorary degree are forwarded to Senate, accompanied by comments from the committee, background information and letters of support. In order for Senate to recommend the conferring of an honorary degree, at least twothirds of the votes must be in the affirmative.

4

HONORARY DEGREE The work of Ms. Diana DeLaronde-Colombe demonstrates the impact one person can have on a community. Today, she is being recognized for her dedication and commitment to Manitoba’s northern communities and their people, addressing issues such as food security, access to health care, job training, transportation, and housing. In 2001, wanting to make an impact in her community of Wabowden, Manitoba, Ms. DeLaronde-Colombe created the community development office. She quickly began facilitating programs, such as Truck Driver Training, to help others find employment. She soon realized, however, that if she brought more communities together, their collective voice would ring louder in the ears of funders and they could achieve greater goals. So she brought together Councillors and other leaders from six communities along the rail line, from Ilford to Cormorant, and they created the Bayline Regional Roundtable. In this new enterprise, Ms. DeLaronde-Colombe gave herself the title of “Animator” because that is how she views her role in all endeavours: as someone there to empower and impassion others. And she did. And she does.

DIANA DELARONDECOLOMBE

Solving food security issues in Northern communities had troubled many before her, yet she saw an elegant and sustainable path forward. Following her vision, the Roundtable sought and received funding from the Public Health Agency of Canada and other funders, which facilitated the purchase of a shipment of freezers to store the fish and meat hunted along with bulk food purchases. These freezers were provided to community members at cost, and the repayments were used to purchase even more freezers. To further help people maintain healthy diets, she facilitated programming that taught people how to garden, raise poultry and then preserve and can their food. She championed this Northern Foods Initiative, and it led to the development of the Manitoba Food Charter, which then grew to become Food Matters Manitoba. Today, the legacy of her original project is astounding: in its modern form, it helps 80 per cent of Manitoban communities. Recognizing this impact, in 2007 she received the Capturing Opportunities-Outstanding Community Leadership Award from Manitoba Agriculture Food and Rural Initiatives. Ms. DeLaronde-Colombe is also active in the community in other ways, fundraising and helping start new recreational opportunities for children and youth. Indeed, in 2007, after receiving the Women’s World Summit Foundation Prize for Women’s Creativity in Rural Life from an international NGO (the first Canadian to earn such an honour), she used her prize money to purchase playground equipment for children in Wabowden. And last year, she led a fundraising campaign which helped the local musicians purchase audio equipment that has allowed them to continue to benefit the community. “Anything that is going to empower someone else to make a difference, is where I will put my energy,” she says. Ms. Diana DeLaronde-Colombe is a compassionate leader who always acts in the interests of others. And today the University of Manitoba is honoured to celebrate her creativity and commitment to improving the lives of countless Manitobans by awarding a Doctor of Laws, honoris causa.

ACADEMIC DRESS Guests at Convocation will readily conclude that the academic dress worn by graduands and members of the academic procession is both colourful and varied. The significance of academic dress may not be so apparent. Academic dress includes a gown, hood (worn over the shoulders), and a cap or mortarboard. All universities have distinctive academic dress for each degree offered. This explains the variety of academic dress worn by members of the academic procession who have graduated from many different institutions. The University of Manitoba has patterned its academic dress after the British tradition using the Oxford gown as the model. The Oxford attire is a modified form of the garments worn by its members in medieval times, sometimes attributed to the need for warmth in their damp halls of learning. There are three types of gowns at the University of Manitoba: the Bachelor’s and Master’s gowns are black; the Doctor of Philosophy gown is black with red velvet bars on sleeves and front panels; and the Honorary Doctor’s gown is scarlet. Mortarboards are black with a black tassel and are worn by all graduands except for honorary graduands; they wear round brimmed caps of black velvet with a gold tassel. It is the hood which signifies the degree to be presented to the graduand. The hoods for Bachelor’s degrees all have the common characteristics of black material edged with white borg material. Hoods for each of the Bachelor’s degrees at the University have a distinctive lining ranging from no lining (black) for Arts, to green for Agriculture, to gold for Science. Similarly hoods for the various Master’s degrees have a distinctive lining but can be differentiated from Bachelor’s hoods by the absence of a borg edging. Hoods for Honorary Doctor’s degrees are scarlet with different linings: white indicates an Honorary Doctor of Laws; yellow, an Honorary Doctor of Science; and slate blue, an Honorary Doctor of Letters. See the following page for a complete listing of the colours of all hood linings. Senate must approve any changes in academic dress. The Senate Committee on Academic Dress, which includes the Director of the School of Art and the Head of the Department of Interior Design, makes recommendations to Senate on the academic dress of graduands, the Chancellor, the Vice-Chancellor, the Marshalls, and other officers of Convocation.
