The Tunnel
Not set into hillside or embankment at the park’s weed-choked edge, the tunnel appears before you as if conjured by a stage magician’s elaborate trick—a commanding white concrete void haloed by clotted brush and unruly sycamores. You could, with little effort, drive a semitruck into that vast pristine corridor which plunges past two mammoth gray buttresses jutting down from a thick header slab to overgrown ground. But oddly the structure somehow occupies too little space, nestled as it is amongst bushes and the low overhang of tree branches. Identical to the interior, the drab gray shell is utterly unspoiled, even lustrous, like it was some virgin WWII bunker. Edging past the surrounding brush, you make your way around the side exterior. Expecting something massive, you instead encounter an inexplicably truncated structure. The concrete abruptly ends where buttresses meet header. You circle back to the entrance giddy with incomprehension, the park deepening as the day’s light and heat slough off with twilight’s descent. Spectral glow of white. Absolute white. The light is just there screaming, permeating, infusing the space, antiseptic in its preternatural glare. The illumination’s flatness makes gauging tunnel’s length uncertain, but you guess roughly the distance of a football field that terminates in a dark, squarish cavity. Either that or the black mirror of a vintage tv screen. You can’t really tell. First steps inward. You pass the buttresses crossing the threshold into the tunnel proper. The early evening 8
chorus of birds and crickets sharply ceases. Except for roar of blood surging through your veins, all sounds are disconcertingly deadened. You take several steps backward, back to the flanged entrance and the park’s twilight whirr promptly resumes. You reach out and touch the left buttress. Warm. Its surface soft as padded leather. You step once again over the threshold and stand there transfixed, your body casting no shadow on any surface. Despite a cool draft of air moving past you, dampness begins to form at the base of your spine. In the ensuing total silence, you slowly become aware of it. Or you imagine you do. A weak, doleful voice emanating from the void at tunnel’s end. Your initial giddiness gives way to gradually heightened anxiety. Yet, you move further in, determined to apprehend the sound’s source. The tunnel’s muteness, its evenness of light become disorienting. You’re unsure how far you’ve really traversed. You begin to count your steps but lack focus. Losing count, blood coursing loudly within you, your sense of time and measure becomes obliterated. At some point you finally register the squarish void has become larger. Straining to be heard, the voice again returns, distinctly plaintive, but muffled as if by cotton batting. You spin around with a convulsive jerk to address the source. Through plummeting blackness, you see a white, squarish aperture you’d swear could also be the illuminated mirror of a vintage tv screen. Pressed against what appears to be glass, a distressed face, almost clown-like. Familiar. 9
