Program Overview

In the first 4 years of the MDes program students have worked with:

The wicked problems we face — healthcare, climate change, terrorism, poverty — require exceptional rigor and deep collaboration to address. Through Integrative Design, we have the ability to respond thoughtfully, thoroughly, and with informed intent to the complex, multi-causal challenges the world faces today. The two-year MDes in Integrative Design graduate program at the Stamps School of Art & Design at the University of Michigan leads the charge to create and strengthen a new kind of designer able to respond to the demands of the 21st century. Alongside industry and non-profit partners, students in the MDes program address real-world wicked problems through hands-on, project-based work in the context of one of the world’s premier research institutions. Each year, the University of Michigan spends $1.48 billion on research, demonstrating deep and resourced commitment to the advancement of new knowledge. We have a strong placement rate for our graduates. MDes graduates leave the program with a roster

DESIGn AS ACTIOn

In order for integrative design to work optimally, MDes students work together, with, and for their partners and stakeholders. Design is a verb in this context — it is something we do, a process we employ. It is not a product we produce. Centered in research and working hand-in-hand with partners, stakeholders, and constituents, Integrative Design is not locked into one disciplinary design strategy. Instead, we are adaptive, utilizing multiple tactics as the project or problem requires.

They are not alone. According to a 2015 AARP report, nearly 44 million Americans act as caregivers each year. More than half of those people are caring for someone who has been hospitalized in the last year. 36% of people caring for loved ones face moderate to high levels of financial strain and 38% experience emotional stress as a result of caregiving.

CASE STUDY

The Power of Story: An MDes 2018 Thesis Project

Michigan Medicine’s newly minted Office of Patient Experience (OPE) worked with three MDes students to help approach hospital innovation to improve the many similar situations in which families find themselves. Scott Dailey, Prerna Dudani, and Priyanka Raju (all MDes 2018 graduates) spent nearly three semesters

during the MDes program conducting research about patient and family experiences, mapping hospital workflows, and co-designing principles in order to provide Michigan Medicine with tools to help them build the capacity of providers and administrators to improve hospital operations and practices in favor of patients and families. “Our project started as a small intervention and then moved to become an organizational intervention,” said Dudani. “We recognized the need to incorporate other hospital staff to build co-design workshops. Ultimately, we brought together nurses and caregivers to create concepts to improve patient experience.”

CASE STUDY HIGHlIGHT

48 hours of absolute turmoil greeted a mother and her daughter when her husband needed an emergency kidney removal due to complications from a routine procedure. And to top it off the bathroom wasn’t clean. As with most patients, the two women didn’t want to leave the hospital — so they toughed it out. They cleaned the bathroom themselves. They pushed together waiting room chairs and used jackets as a pillows. Then they sat in stress all night while they awaited word about the surgery happening just down the hall.

“Everybody we’ve talked to is very polite,” the daughter said. “But we’re running on two hours of sleep in forty-eight hours. My dad is in critical care. We’re stressed out. We’re tired. We’re fidgety. You know…cleaning up the room I’m sitting in is not something I should have to do.”

Partnerships & Collaboration The intensity of collaboration in the MDes program cannot be understated. Each MDes cohort forms a pro-bono integrative design firm of sorts, trading in creative briefs for a wicked problem and a small collection of hand-picked potential partners. Selected by the MDes faculty advisors or sourced by the cohort, these potential partners are best able to address the

wicked problem in the context of the program and are best positioned to help MDes students achieve their personal goals for the program. Collectively, the MDes cohort decides which partner(s) to take on for the duration of the program — along with an approach to the wicked problem suitable to the partnership.

Canopy: An MDes 2018 Thesis Project

The partnership between MDes and OPE lives on in the form of a toolkit containing methods for story-driven workshops, research tools, and facilitation guides that can support OPE staff as they work with units throughout the hospital. The kit was used successfully to change the way patients and families access ancillary services like showers, laundry services, and earplugs while staying in the hospital, but is intended to scale to a wide range of challenges facing Michigan Medicine. “We needed to make information more accessible,” said Dailey. “We got to the point of codifying our findings into our thesis paper and framework, something we hope will translate [our work] into a form that is more accessible to hospital staff.” “Your toolkit could be used in this setting — to create patient- and family-centered care champions — on day one!”,” said Molly DwyerWhite, Administrative Director of OPE. “[Before now] we had specific engagement processes, but not consistent tools.” MDES STUDE nT bE nE FITS

During the project, which also become the topic of their thesis work, the three students found collaboration to be both the most difficult and most rewarding part of the experience. “What stuck with me was the fact that collaboration is not a simple endeavor,” Dudani said. “True collaboration requires lots of work beforehand to prepare. It requires openness and trust.”

In addition to the support of key staff at OPE and nursing units throughout the hospital, the team utilized funding from Stamps to complete their project work and further their scholarship. Ultimately, each student left the project with additional skills in project management, group facilitation, and ethnographic research. But importantly they each found a deep connection to the work of the OPE and the need to improve the hospital experience for families that might also find themselves in a difficult situation like a late-night surgical emergency. “There were soft and hard skills I picked up over the last two years,” said Raju. “Communication is one. Another is being able to visualize in a way that is helpful internally and externally. They developed because of how deeply embedded we were and how much access we had to people.” The spirit of collaboration was felt by staff at the Office of Patient Experience. “It was great to have these very different perspectives coming together. I got to learn more about their process [of co-design]. They learned about my real-world challenges,” said Molly White. “It all came together in a wonderful way that felt very authentic and collaborative.” This project will be presented in October 2018 at the Planetree International Conference on Person-Centered Care. Utilizing the entrepreneurial ecosystem at the University of Michigan, Brandon Keelean (MDes ’18) was able to explore the thorny challenges associated with end-of-life healthcare decisions. Alongside two other U-M graduate students, Elisabeth Michel (MPH ’17) and Ann Duong (MHI ’18) Keelean established a company to support the 63% of adults in the U.S. who have not yet discussed and documented their preferences should they find themselves in a medical emergency unable to speak for themselves. Utilizing resources from the broader University, including funding from the Zell Lurie Institute at the Ross School of Business, the Center for Entrepreneurship in the School of Engineering, the School of Public Health's Innovation in Action Program, and the Law School’s Entrepreneurial Law Clinic, the team was able to transition Canopy into a company, complete with entrepreneurial mentoring and start-up capital. Equity and Access: Food Systems Equity is a state in which all people, regardless of their race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and various other markers of social disadvantage, have fair and just access to the resources and opportunities necessary to thrive. Equity disparities often reflect reciprocal influences between biased or unfair policies, programs, practices, or situations that contribute to a lack of equality in expectations, circumstances, and quality of life. Improving equity begins with improving access.

DESIGn STUDIO 1 is focused on Inquiry. What is known? What is not known? Who do we know? Where is the opportunity? The cohort will be exploring the territory and looking for open areas where contributions can be made.

HOW IT WORKS

That effort is supported by the RESEARCH METHODS and the InTEGRATIOn SEMInAR that delve into the resources of the University and beyond. How do other researchers go about doing their work? What can we contribute to that? What are we integrating? How are we going to integrate it?

Curriculum Overview

In second semester, DESIGn STUDIO 2 centers on prototyping. It’s about taking what we’ve learned from the first semester and trying to deploy it. We want to capture some information and data about how our ideas operate in the world. What works well? What needs to be fixed? This is backed up by DESIGn FOR THE 21ST CEnTURY, a design seminar that explores this new program in Integrative Design and how it operates in the world. How is it different? And why?

The MDes curriculum includes both design education and engagement training. Within the structure of the umbrella topic, the first year is focused on identifying the problems and the second year on addressing them.

It’s all about integrative design — trying out different models in different contexts. Third semester is the ramp-up towards the thesis. This is backed up by THESIS PREP , which focuses on the research and methodologies that are necessary to undertake the project and the writing necessary to complete the document itself. PROFESSIOnAl PRACTICE looks toward the future, when you’ll have your Masters of Integrative Design. How do you make a case for having such a unique qualification? What are the opportunities? What will the ladder be post-graduation?

MDes Collaborative Studio Students conduct their creative work in a new collaborative space within a 33,000 squarefoot facility that also houses faculty studios, a multi-purpose shop, digital media equipment, and large shared working and meeting spaces.

How It Works

The MDes studio has been designed to support collaboration — it is flexible and reconfigurable, with spaces and tools for both group and individual work, as well as a broad range of prototyping processes. Graduate students also have 24/7 access to large state-of-the-art metals, fibers, ceramics, sculpture, wood, print, digital media, and digital fabrication studios, as well as a range of resources only available at a top research university, such as audio engineering booths, robotic labs, virtual reality studios, specialized libraries, institutes and collections, and much more.

MDes Charrettes At key moments throughout the program, MDes students conceive of and host Design Charrettes with partners and stakeholders. These intense systems and strategy design sessions lead to tangible outcomes and recommendations that address vital elements of the cohort’s wicked problem.

2017 Charrette: MDes × IBM Over the course of two days in March 2017, MDes students presented MDes × IBM, a design charrette to explore the intersection of cognitive technology and healthcare. Participants represented a wide range of disciplines and expertise. In addition to IBM Watson Health Team, MDes students hosted other industry leaders in manufacturing and technology, including Guardian Industries Corp, Georgia Pacific, Molex, Stryker, and Steelcase Health. Collectively, the industry participants represented at the charrette were

worth $239 Billion, demonstrating high-level corporate interest and support. Additionally, faculty and students from across the university participated in the charrette, as did clinicians and administrators from Michigan Medicine, providing a rich diversity of thought. Together, charrette attendees participated in a series of design-led team activities to help support the creation of five different scenarios where cognitive technology intersects with healthcare.

The Stamps School is eager to bring Integrative Design practices into industry, non-profits, and the world at large through the work accomplished within our graduate program— and through the continuation of this work by graduates of our program.
