https://www.canon-timeline.eu/ what project is it, CANON of TECHNICAL THEATRE HISTORY?
Students and staff of nine European university institutions, research centres and dual education programs – from Belgium, Czech Republic, Spain, Germany, Italy, Sweden and the United Kingdom – are collaborating to develop a timeline and a Canon of technical theatre during six workshop meetings. The methodology used and the developed tools are being documented as the project develops.
2
The aim of the CANON of TECHNICAL THEATRE HISTORY is to increase awareness and understanding of the history of technical theatre in Europe: its practices and technologies.
The project contributes to the current discourse on the preservation of the cultural heritage of transnational and international theatre technology and techniques. We not only want to value history as an essential element in the education of theatre practitioners and the building of the identity of theatre professionals, but also to stress the importance and usefulness of sharing our heritage as an impetus for innovative developments.
Adopting multiple perspectives from the disciplines of art history, engineering design, scenography, architecture and theatre studies, the project engages with archival research. It includes the tangible as well as the intangible cultural heritage of the performing arts field. The outputs of the project will be a set of digital learning materials that can be used as a whole, can be integrated into the teaching of various specific disciplines, or used as reference material. This flexible approach will empower teachers to structure their courses in a flexible way, adapted to the requirements of different learners. The methodology guidelines and the teaching tools will inspire new teaching practices and support a diversity of Theneeds.project
structure and methodology guarantees that research from both teachers and students feeds back into education and to the wider professional field. The results will be able to be used by local stakeholders, reinforcing the link between the local community and the partner institutions. The network arising from this cooperation will ensure continuing development and the sustainability of the project outcomes.
An international network, connecting teachers, future practitioners, historical and professional experts and consultants will continue after the project and expand to new regions. The network will create awareness and give students and teachers a more international perThespective.network is not a traditional educational network, but breaks through existing boundaries between education, the professional world, and heritage experts, bringing together the strengths and insights from different these different groups. The network will provide a model that can be extended to related fields or be inspirational for other disciplines.

The Praghe teachers workshop focusses on the innovative force of oral heritage. History of technical theatre occurs for a large part in the recent past. The witnesses of this past are still available to transmit their expertise, knowledge and skills. Safeguarding these invaluable, intangible artefacts is key to future history writing and innovation. We look at cases where contemporary innovation is clearly triggered by oral heritage and discuss how we can use these in contemporary education and practice.
The Madrid teacher workshop focuses on the relation between architects, scenographers and technicians and the way the way technology is "traveling" in time and space. Based on case presentations, the participants discuss similarities and difference in technological development and use in the different regions and time frames in Europa.
The CANON team, led by Felisa de Blas Gómez and Almudena Lopez Villalba, share their representation of Léon de Sommi's Dialogues on Staging. This text comes from the 16th century and as a first one of its kind, it sheds light on the technical process of theatre stage directory.
Due the corona crisis and the impossibility to travel, we moved the foreseen student workshop online. The workshop focussed on developping a common history with people from different countries. Students worked together during a week on different platforms and created a grafical representation of 4 historical themes BRUSSELS TEACHERS MEETING (11-13 / 12 / 2019)

CO-TEACHING
The first student workshop focusses on a the relation between historic and contemporary technology and alternative methods to document technical facts. Sweden is the home of historic as well as contemporary technology development. This gives opportunities to see and use different types of theatre equipment use and to match and compare different phases in the development. The students will prepare an overview of development of different technologies in advance . During the workshop the students extend the time line in which specific historic facts, inventions and uses are marked.
On digital.DTHG's webpage, you can find an interview led by Franziska Ritter with Chris Van Goethem. Discussing the merits of the CANON project, future of teaching and digitization, Franziska and Chris went into a deep think and discussion about how different countries vary in approaches to theatre technology and stage operations. This is an exciting and valuable read for anyone who is interested in the development of current performance space, the complexity of the project and the historical knowledge and heritage of European theatre. Teachers guide the students and give input on possible paths to follow. The students (in mixed groups) research these elements and document them, based on a standardized format developed by the teachers group. The research and documentation is not limited to “paper” research and documentation. Research includes innovative methods like working models or visualisation that confront the historical knowledge with the physical reality. Documentation can include animation, sound recordings, moving image, virtual reality or apps.

The International Co operation Project is between 7 European faculties and two Major Theatre Institutes including the Prague Quadrennial (ATI) under the patronage of the European Community Erasmus+. The project has been active for about two years and has shared important projects and research such as the translation of Sabbatini and other important research. The results and studies have been shared both online and in physical meetings where we have participated with both teachers and students such as in Ceschi Krumlov Prague, Madrid, Stockolm.
The closing of the Meeting will be at Cinecittà. After a guided tour of the studios, there will be theMultiples Event, a talk with a number of non-theatre guests who will share their research and experiences with us. At the end we will greet the guests and pass the relay to our colleagues from the Beuth Hochschule University of Applied Sciences Berlin Germany, organisers of the November Meeting, where students and teachers from the School of Set Design in Frosinone will participate.
