Umbrella Studio contemporary arts

WELCOME

Hello Umbrella Members, Art Lovers & Visitors, Your first glimpse of Umbrella’s 2013 schedule includes our exhibitions and programs that link with other great events happening in Townsville. We launch our first exhibition, In the Chinese Style during the Chinese New Year to include multicultural performance with visual arts and workshops. Exhibition highlights include: Mesh: showcasing three environmental artists, Lynnette Griffiths from Cairns, Sue Ryan from Ravenshoe and Marion Gaemers from Townsville. All three have vast experience working in remote Indigenous communities on the successful Ghost Nets Project. Light on the Fringe: For the first time Umbrella connects with Strand Ephemera, expanding this premier outdoor sculpture event. This fringe art event is an important partnership between the Townsville City Council, JCU School of Creative Arts & Umbrella Studio. JCU students and local artists will use digital skills to create a projection to be shown on the east side wall of the Umbrella Studio building over three evenings 4 - 6 September. Creative Generations Excellence Awards in Visual Art 2012-2013 touring exhibition: In addition to North Queensland arts practitioners, the best senior art students in Queensland will fill the entire gallery with a variety of artworks. All of our exhibitions will be accompanied by an exciting series of workshops and interesting activities; check out our website for up to date information and the events calendar. While online make sure to browse our other new services such as the discussion forums, comment on an exhibition, view the catalogue or watch artist talks on the new Gallery Channel. Thank you to Angela Cheung for the cleverly designed bookmark to help us remember all the exhibition launch openings this year. We aim to energize the arts community in Townsville with quality programs and contemporary visual arts. On behalf of the staff and Board we encourage your participation, and strengthened by your fellowship, together we aim to cultivate creative expression. Vicki Salisbury, Director
