Exhibition Calendar
2014
Greetings, What a terrific year we have planned for 2014. Our annual program offers an eclectic range of traditional studio based works, experimental work, and digital/multi arts programs to delight and challenge viewers and participants.
welcome
We launch our 2014 exhibition program with SYNTHESIS, a partnership between scientists, artists, community organisations and schools. This exhibition incorporates new concepts and hybrid works not exhibited in regional areas. Sculpture features in our program with 2013 Strand Ephemera winner Rainer SchlĂźeter‘s Dancers Variations in Blue, a choreographed exhibition of ephemeral floor sculpture and masks created from fibre, wood and paint. During the Queensland Festival of Photography the ground-breaking photographic exhibition Call the World Brother presents International photographers represented by Panos Pictures - a photo agency specialising in global social issues. The photography work of North Queensland based artist Holly Grech features in September with An Australian Story: These are the hues of the land I love, an exhibition of new works which are a fusion of photomedia practice and historical reference. Townsville printmakers have always been a significant part of Umbrella and this year is no exception. If you are new to printmaking or just need to hone your skills, the workshop series Back to Basics consists of 8 print workshops facilitated by our amazing
local printmakers. The studio downstairs is a hive of activity including; artist residencies, master classes, school programs and more. Bookish, an exhibition of innovative and quirky artist books by Townsville printmakers Sheree Kinlyside and Sandra Wright is an exhibition highlight. In August, Umbrella’s signature biennial exhibition is back, and better than ever. Our international family of printmakers are gearing up to produce CD sized prints for Compact Prints 2014, alongside Students In Case, prints from local school students. Over 60 diverse Townsville artists are represented in the eclectic exhibition, Art and Architecture in the Tropics; a selection of works from Townsville architect Terry O’Toole’s incredible collection of Troppo building portraits. This is only a small sample of our dynamic program aimed to connect the community and energize Townsville through Contemporary Art at Umbrella Studio. Vicki Salisbury, Director
Our Vision Transforming the way you experience contemporary art.
About
Umbrella Studio Association Incorporated is an inclusive, not–for–profit, members based exhibition and studio space which drives innovation, invites experimentation, encourages excellence and inspires appreciation for contemporary visual art in North Queensland and beyond.
WHAT WE DO EXHIBITIONS
Umbrella Studio operates four exhibition spaces: the Main Space, Access Space, Stairwell and the Vault. Each year we produce over 20 exhibitions from established and emerging contemporary visual artists and curators.
UMBRELLA TALKS We run a program of free talks from the artists featured in the exhibitions. Conducted in the casual environment of the exhibition space participants are encouraged to engage with the artists and ask questions about their work and creative processes.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Umbrella Studio offers professional development seminars to provide artists, teachers, students and others advice and information from industry experts on funding grants, international residencies, arts law and business and other relevant topics. In 2011 Umbrella made a commitment to develop a program of International residencies, offering support for members to travel overseas to learn and share. Umbrella also manages events and creative projects; we publish prints and auspice funding grants for our members.
