Transforming the way you experience contemporary art
ABOUT
Umbrella Studio Association Incorporated is an inclusive, not–for–profit, members based exhibition and studio space which drives innovation, invites experimentation, encourages excellence and inspires appreciation for contemporary visual art in North Queensland and beyond.
What we do Exhibitions
Umbrella Studio operates four exhibition spaces: the Main Space, Access Space, Stairwell and the Vault. Each year we produce over 24 exhibitions from established and emerging contemporary visual artists and curators.
Umbrella Talks
We run a program of free talks from the artists featured in the exhibitions. Conducted in the casual environment of the exhibition participants are encouraged to engage with the artists, ask questions about their work & creative processes.
Professional Development
Umbrella Studio offers professional development seminars to provide artists, teachers, students and others advice and information from industry experts on funding grants, international residencies, arts law and business and other relevant topics. In 2011 Umbrella made a commitment to develop a program of International residencies, offering support for members to travel overseas to learn and share. Umbrella also manages events and creative projects; we publish prints and auspice funding grants for our members.
Creative Workshops
Meet and work with contemporary artists and people who want to experiment and learn interesting techniques. North Queensland’s best artists facilitate hands-on workshops that are of a high standard, reasonably priced and accessible. Our calendar of workshops & events changes frequently.
Promote North Queensland Artists
We promote North Queensland artists by producing travelling exhibitions that tour nationally and internationally, and support members with public artwork referrals.
Invest in the arts
We are committed to investing in artistic vibrancy for the benefit of artists and the community. We provide employment and training opportunities to young people in the arts through paid work, internships, traineeships and volunteering opportunities.
Education/Youth Activities
Umbrella Studio connects with teachers, students, schools, TAFE and James Cook University to promote the contemporary visual arts to students in North Queensland. We encourage and welcome visits from schools — resources for teachers can be provided when visiting the Gallery. Keep up to date and stay involved by becoming a member, subscribing to our eNews or by visiting: www.umbrella.org.au

Godre’r Glais Utilizing all three of Umbrella’s exhibition spaces this exhibition of works by Alison McDonald, Jenny Mulcahy, Jill O’Sullivan and Gerald Soworka features a range of media including drawing, printmaking, sculpture and jewellery. These four Townsville artists completed an artist in residence at Aberystwyth Arts Centre, Wales between 2012 to 2014. By chance these residencies have coincided with the four seasons of the year. The exhibition title Godre’r Glais comes from the name of the house the artists all lived in during their residencies, and, as such, provides a common link between the artists’ otherwise greatly varied experiences. The exhibition presents each artist’s individual interpretations of their Welsh experience; the land and its people.
