Legacy: Reflections on Mabo 5 July to 11 August

Legacy: Reflections on Mabo celebrates the man behind the game-changing Native Title Act, Eddie Koiki Mabo, and the ongoing influence and impact he has had on Australian society and culture. This travelling exhibition brings together 26 Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists in the spirit of reconciliation, 27 years after this historic achievement. Each artist has responded to an aspect of Mabo they were drawn to, whether it was his life, politics, activism or legacy. The artworks come together in surprising ways, with reverence, compassion, anger, sadness and respect, celebrating a man who was both a rebel and a dreamer.

EXHIBITIONS AROUND TOWNSVILLE

and

In 2019, Umbrella will continue bringing North Queensland artists to the rest of Australia.

Travelling by String bernadette boscacci 16 August to 22 September

The title of this exhibition relates to an elemental way of being and moving through the world. The environment of objects and images presented by Boscacci reflects her artistic enquiries into her own creative journey and deep love of nature. The exhibition marks 20 years since Bernadette returned to live and work in Townsville, and 20 years since her first solo exhibition at Umbrella Studio.

Sheltering

barbara pierce 16 August to 22 September

Shelter, landscape and social fabric are essentially linked and unique to prevailing circumstances. In this exhibition a familiar theme is revisited in work initiated in response to word of humanitarian crises where the seeking of shelter or sanctuary is paramount.

Accretion: Mapping the Landscape jo lankester 27 September to 3 November

An exhibition of contemporary Australian prints by Jo Lankester, employing a range of intaglio and relief techniques to create prints that are an intuitive response to personal experiences in the Australian Landscape. Impressed by the symbiotic relationships of organisms and how they form pleasing compositions made up of intriguing textures, line, and colour combinations. These elements of nature and experience inform her work.

Queensland Glitterati lisa ashcroft 27 September to 3 November

Landscapes document time and place. Ashcroft’s work often contain surface graffiti and scratches: a reminder of our need to be remembered and to leave behind a sign of our existence. The artist attempts to represent Queensland’s beauty and scale, and Far North Queensland’s luminosity - awe inspiring for a girl from gloomy Northern England.
