Exhibition Calendar
Welcome
Welcome to another exciting year of exhibitions at Umbrella. We are, as always, dedicated to exhibiting our region’s emerging and established artists, and bringing new work to our city. 2018 will see some longtime Umbrella artists take the spotlight (Anneke Silver, Vince Bray, Maxine Smith, Lynn Scott- Cumming and Red Rag Press), some exciting exhibitions from emerging talents (Marie-Louise Jones, Naomi O’Reilly, Brain Foetus, Suzannah Babicci and Rob Donaldson), exhibitions of nearly every media (Michael Pope, Belinda Curry, Sydney Printmakers, Kellie O’Dempsey, Mia Peronis, and Carolyn McKenzie-Craig, Caity Reynolds & Katelyn Jane-Dunn), as well as two world-class touring exhibitions (Spaced 2: Future Recall and Tracey Moffatt & Gary Hillberg’s Montages). We will also see the return of Compact Prints, Young Indigenous Printmakers, Umbrella at the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair and an early member’s show, This Is Not The End, just to throw everybody! We will also have a special video and animation program as a part of Festival 2018 at Strand Park, and we continue to tour Tommy Pau’s Ad Wer: Story of the Stars and Alison McDonald’s Wanton, Wild and Unimagined throughout Australia.
In 2017, Umbrella held 45 internal and external exhibitions. UMBRELLA STUDIO STAFF Director: Jonathan McBurnie Business Manager: Alan Marlowe Gallery & Media Coordinator: Angela Little Front Cover Image: Laura McMahon, Beautiful Mask, 2017, watercolour and pen, 29.7x42cm

Child’s Play by Laura McMahon Laura McMahon, also known as Brain Foetus, is a Fremantle native now living and working in Hobart, Tasmania. Her work calls upon a host of recurring characters to reside in a continuous narrative of increasingly colourful and elaborate dreamscapes. These works represent making sense of feelings and searching for a sense of belonging within the artist - a reunion with the inner child.
19 JANUARY TO 25 FEBRUARY
Route A6 by Vince Bray Vince Bray’s work is an ongoing study of the landscape from Townsville to Mount Isa. Coming to art during a bout of malaria, Bray’s childhood of wandering hills, creeks and rock holes has grown into a deep examination of the dry tropics through painting and printmaking.
19 JANUARY TO 25 FEBRUARY
Unutterable by Rob Donaldson Unutterable: too great or awful to describe. A collection of artworks we don’t want to believe or refuse to acknowledge.
19 JANUARY TO 25 FEBRUARY
North Queensland’s independent bookshop, with an eclectic range of books, music, cards and chocolate.
07 4771 3824 414 Flinders Street Townsville, Queensland
Acknowledge by Anneke Silver With a rigorous investigation of landscape over an extensive period of time, Anneke Silver has recently sought to reconcile her own European sensibilities with traditional custodians of the land. This artistic conversation led to a quiet but powerful revelation of the ancient primacy of the landscape, which Silver explores within this body of work.
2 MARCH TO 8 APRIL
Entangle by Marie-Louise Jones After serving for eleven years in the Royal Australian Navy, Marie-Louise Jones was diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). While serving in the First Gulf War, she experienced difficulties with the antagonistic attitudes from her male co-workers. Entangle seeks to create a conversation of awareness of PTSD in female veterans, and, hopefully, help others that have experienced this to seek help and support.
2 MARCH TO 8 APRIL
Please Take a Seat by Lynn Scott-Cumming This site-specific installation by Lynn Scott-Cumming is designed to ask the audience to rethink how they view the world. The exhibition is an experiment with the power of words.
2 MARCH TO 8 APRIL

For this work she has collaborated with sound artist Michael Dick.

Michael Pope’s ongoing series is brimming with life and character. The works, always completed in-situ, capture the unpredictable experiences of travel and quieter, everyday moments.
13 APRIL TO 20 MAY
What's in a Box? by Belinda Curry This can be taken literally with Belinda Curry's series of works created from selected images of Townsville, contained in box journals and artists books created from recycled packaging and prints. Canis Familiaris by Maxine Smith Dogs are uniquely tuned to human behaviour. They perform many roles for people. Italian dogs have used their intelligence to adapt to a different way of living than Australian dogs. Maxine Smith examines these dogs and how they have adapted to their roles.
25 MAY TO 1 JULY
Defective Rituals by Carolyn McKenzie Craig, Caity Reynolds and Katelyn Jane-Dunn The failure of subjective conformance is ritualised in the practices of three contemporary female artists. These works at once explore, satirize and subvert the expectations of being female through explorations in different media.
6 JULY TO 12 AUGUST
Birth/Rebirth by Mia Peronis This photographic series explores the challenges that come with motherhood; extreme highs and lows in physical, emotional and mental wellbeing, and a total surrender of pre-motherhood independence. All of these challenges present an ongoing journey of growth and acceptance for the artist, and are explored through Mia Peronis’ observations of her own family, captured one moment at a time.
6 JULY TO 12 AUGUST
The Logic of Dreams by Suzannah Babicci The Logic of Dreams is an exhibition of small sculpture studies inspired by found natural objects. The work investigates 3D printing as a medium, and how it translates to material through artistic process. The exhibition explores the deconstruction of form, manipulating the natural and fabricated qualities through the mechanical printing process.
