Waipu is an extremely beautiful estuary and beach with a little town and a not so beautiful 1957 decommissioned fire station. I like the idea that it has been saved as a shop selling Art Deco, leading to the question “What is beauty?”

Why Not? Linocut, collage and hand colouring 15 x 10cm $70 I ike the various black birds found in Australia. I used this crow to experiment with the spit-biting technique.

The lace used comes from a collection belonging to my mother and grandmother who came to Australia as refugees after World War 2 and made a living as dressmakers. Nasturtium Screenprint, carved stamps 10 x 15cm $35 Tropaeolum known as nasturtium means ‘nose twister.’ Named by Carl Linnaeus, it reminded him of a Roman custom of setting up a trophy pole called tropeaum. On this the armour and weapons of the vanquished foe were hung. The round leaves resembled shields and the flowers, bloodstained helmets.

‘Frida in Sydney’ is one of an art museum series that play homage to iconic paintings. ‘Self Portrait with Monkeys’ shows four adoring monkeys representing a group of students who so admired their teacher that they became known as Los Fridos.
