n e e r g alan ION E MAP LOCAT eet, Northtown s Str 280 Flinder Alan Green is an experimental and conceptual photographer, with his work typically focusing on Green’s own unique take on a subject. His project Winter Rose takes focus on the happenings quite unique to the dry tropics, looking at the way winter roses bloom in Townsville, taking advantage of the ideal climate of dry and clear conditions, whereas in the south it’s too cold, and the north too humid.

FREE WORKSHOPS - WINTER ROSE ZEN

Participants will explore the fact that roses still bloom in winter in the dry tropics. Alan Green discovered this last year working at last light through vintage lenses. He found that roses emerging from gathering darkness displayed a unique character. Perhaps because of imperfections in the glass, light was transformed into something special and infinitely variable. Participants will explore this idea with vintage lenses from around the world and across time. Lenses of emerging Japanese makers mastering the art in 50’s and 60’s will be adapted. Contemporary lenses will also be compared. And above all, participants will have fun. 5:30pm-6:30pm Friday 2 August | 5:00pm-6:00pm Monday 5 August 5:00pm-6:00pm Tuesday 6 August | 5:00pm-6:00pm Wednesday 7 August 5:00pm-6:00pm Thursday 8 August | 5:30pm-6:30pm Friday 9 August

Miriam Joan Montgomery is a Sydney based artist working primarily in drawing and painting. Depicting unusual, androgynous human forms adrift and detached, alongside abstract spaces, her work portrays the lulling moments between sleeping and waking, confused and fleeting thoughts, always just out of reach. For PUNQ, Miriam aims to build an immersive environment by creating a series of almost life-size figures and creatures, which will fill the space and sit amongst other works including paintings, drawings, jewellery, textiles, prints and zines. To complement the space, Miriam will also incorporate a small indoor garden component to the space to explore the cross over of these disciplines and how these different practices inform and inspire one another.

The workshop is suitable for beginners aged 15 year and over. Participants will use stoneware clay. The Squeaking Tribe is a touring exhibition of marionettes & interactive effigies. Established in 1996, The Tribe meticulously hand-creates 100s of individual, fully-functioning marionette puppets for performance, play and aesthetic display. Every marionette made is an original art piece which can also be used to act out stories, entertain audiences or educate children as a teacher’s aid. For PUNQ, the public can admire & purchase hand-made marionettes, and try their own hand at a rare aspect of performance art not usually made available. The Tribe will publicly demonstrate the basic principles behind marionette manipulation & teach select puppetry fundamentals through interactive exercises, games & impromptu performances.
