1 The Manhattan Graphics Center is an artist run printmaking workshop in the heart of Manhattan and as an active printmaker I am always on the lookout for possibilities and new ideas, such as exploring what other shops and organisations do and show. On my various travels to Australia I visited Townsville a few times which resulted in my art being in the fabulous “Compact Prints” show since 2008. A wonderful asset which brings printmakers from all over the world together. I can’t wait until the next time. That brings me to the idea of having Manhattan Graphics Center and the Umbrella Studio, exchange works, sending a representation of “antipode printmakers” between New York and Townsville. After contacting the Director Vicki Salisbury, we both agreed happily to organise an exchange show and send work from across the globe with the world growing closer through modern technology.

I am extremely happy to add to this with a more traditional way of communication ... the magical work of artistic prints and printmaking.

We created a “call for entry” in the studio and 33 enthusiastic artists submitted several works from which we selected one of their wonderful pieces. I believe we have a very good representation of the diversity of our artists as well as the eclectic art from etching to silkscreen, and from monoprint to linocut, just to name a few techniques. I would hope that we are starting a tradition of exchanging work and ideas between MGC and Umbrella Studio in collaboration with PressNorth Printmakers. I wish I could be in Townsville for the opening of Wanderlust + Manhattan and meet everybody in person. Best wishes and always be creative, Matthias Kern
