NEW FACULTY
Sandeep Devabhakthuni, PharmD, BCPS Assistant Professor, Department of Pharmacy Practice and Science After completing biomedical engineering and Doctor of Pharmacy programs at the University of Pittsburgh, Devabhakthuni completed a pharmacy practice residency at the University of Maryland Medical Center and a cardiology/critical care specialty pharmacy residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. As a clinical pharmacy specialist at the University of Maryland Medical Center, Devabhakthuni works with the primary cardiology and medical intensive care services. His current research interests include medication safety, implementation of human patient simulation in pharmacy curriculum, anticoagulation management, and sedation. Devabhakthuni has obtained board certification in pharmacotherapy. Joga Gobburu, PhD, MBA, FCP Professor, Department of Pharmacy Practice and Science Gobburu is a world-renowned scientific leader in the area of quantitative disease models and their application to decisions. He is best known for transforming the field of pharmacometrics across the world into a decision-supporting science. Gobburu obtained a BPharm and an MSc in chemistry from the Birla Institute of Technology and Science in Pilani, India, in 1992. He earned a PhD in pharmaceutical sciences from North Dakota State University in 1996 and completed two postdoctoral fellowships, one at the University at Buffalo, the State University of New York; and another at the Center for Drug Development Science, Georgetown University, Washington, D.C., and the Food and Drug Administration. Most recently, he received an MBA from Johns Hopkins University. Amy Ives, PharmD ’93, BCPS Affiliate Assistant Professor, Department of Pharmacy Practice and Science Ives received her bachelor’s degree in pharmacy from Rutgers University. After completing a general practice residency at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, she went on to earn her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy. Ives practices as a clinical pharmacy specialist in critical care at the Baltimore Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center, where she has worked for 16 years. During her tenure at the VA, Ives developed the PGY1 residency program and served as director of the program for seven years. She also has practiced in the Anticoagulation Clinic and has served as research advisor for numerous PGY1 residency projects focusing on medication safety issues. At the School of Pharmacy, she handles responsibilities for the Abilities Labs at the Universities at Shady Grove. Pedro Lopes, PhD Research Assistant Professor, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences Lopes received a degree in chemical engineering from the Instituto Superior Tecnico in Lisbon, Portugal, and a PhD in computational chemistry from ITQB/New University of Lisbon. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship in computational chemistry and biology at the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom. He worked at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for one year. Prior to becoming faculty, Lopes was a research associate at the School of Pharmacy. His research focuses on computer-aided drug design and the application and development of molecular modeling techniques for the study of systems of biological relevance. NEW FACULTY Kathleen Pincus, PharmD ’09, BCPS Assistant Professor, Department of Pharmacy Practice and Science An alumna of the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy, Pincus completed her pharmacy practice residency at the University of Maryland Medical Center and her pharmacotherapy specialty residency at the School of Pharmacy. Pincus is working with the University of Maryland School of Medicine Department of Family and Community Medicine to develop a clinical pharmacy practice as part of a patient-centered medical home pilot program. Her research interests are in chronic disease state management and defining the role of the pharmacist in the patient-centered medical home. Audra Stinchcomb, PhD Professor, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences Stinchcomb received her PhD from the University of Michigan College of Pharmacy, and completed her postdoctoral studies at the University of California, San Francisco before joining the Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences as an assistant professor. She subsequently moved to the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy in 2001. Stinchcomb is the founder of AllTranz, a specialty pharmaceutical company focused on novel drug delivery methodologies. Her research program is focused on transdermal and topical drug delivery, specifically applied to neuroactive drugs. She is also an expert in dermal metabolism and the effects of the adsorption of environmental toxins across the skin. Patrick Wintrode, PhD Associate Professor, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences Wintrode received his PhD in biophysics from Johns Hopkins University. After postdoctoral fellowships at the California Institute of Technology and the University of Nebraska, he joined the Department of Physiology and Biophysics at Case Western Reserve University as an assistant professor. Wintrode uses mass spectrometry to probe macromolecular structure, dynamics, and interactions of proteins. His research on the physical mechanisms of action of HIV-1 reverse transcriptase and the serine protease inhibitors provides critical understanding of the function and dysfunction of these proteins in disease. Marcia Worley, PhD, RPh Associate Professor, Department of Pharmacy Practice and Science and Director of Research, Center for Innovative Pharmacy Solutions Worley received her bachelor’s degrees in behavioral neuroscience and pharmacy from the University of Pittsburgh and her master’s degree and PhD in pharmacy administration from Ohio State University and the University of Minnesota, respectively. She comes to the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy from a tenured faculty and department head position at the University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy. Her practice-based research focuses on investigating patient medication use behaviors and outcomes in the context of pharmacist-patient relationships and evaluating pharmacists’ roles in emerging health care models. She has published results from her research in peer-reviewed journals and has presented her research at numerous professional and scientific meetings. She has received teaching awards in the PharmD curriculum at the

University of Minnesota, where she was also actively involved in teaching and mentoring graduate students. Worley serves on the Editorial Advisory Board for the journal Research in Social and Administrative Pharmacy. Currently, she is serving as chair-elect (2011-2012) for the American Pharmacists Association Academy of Pharmaceutical Research and Science, Economic, Social and Administrative Sciences (ESAS) section. She will serve as ESAS chair during the upcoming 2012-2013 term. Fengtian Xue, PhD Assistant Professor, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences Xue received his PhD in chemistry from Brown University. He then joined the Silverman Research Group as a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Chemistry at Northwestern University, where he led a group of scientists in a National Institutes of Health project called “Inhibitors of the neuronal nitric oxide synthase as drug candidates for neurodegenerative diseases.� From 2009 to 2011, Xue worked as an assistant professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Louisiana, Lafayette. At the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy, his research focuses on design, synthesis, and biological evaluation of small molecule therapeutics for the treatment of important human diseases including traumatic brain injury, neurodegenerative disorders, and infectious diseases.
