UMD MEN’S BASKETBALL The Bulldogs graduated a pair of seniors this past season, but will add eight players as well as the returning 2013-14 NSIC Preseason Player of the Year Brett Ervin, who received a medical redshirt last season, as they look to continue the upward movement the program has seen in the past two seasons under the guidance of Coach Bowen and his staff.

WHO’S BACK? The Bulldogs return a fourmember senior class including Ervin. Shooting guard Reece Zoelle leads the pack after a stellar 2013-14 campaign that saw him shine as a shooter. Point guard Junior Coleman transferred to UMD before last season and finished fourth on the squad in scoring. Swing man Kristofer Jackson rounds out the senior class. Hampered by an injury in the first half of the season, Jackson still posted career-highs in scoring and rebounding averages. A trio of first-year big men got significant experience in Ervin’s absence: Charles Benson, Jake Harder, and Lane Olson will see more time as reserves this season, but each impressed in his freshman campaign. Guards Justin Byrd and Garrison Gillard will compete with Coleman for time at the point, while forward Treyton Daniels and Jake Wilson each gained experience off the bench in 2013-14 and will continue to compete for time this season.

SEASON PREVIEW

WHO’S NEW?

2

“This year’s recruiting class has provided us with players who should be able to make an immediate impact on our roster next season,” said Coach Bowen. “In addition, we have also added depth for years to come.” Five first-year players will join the fray for UMD including three guards and two post-men. Kyle Schalow, a 6-foot-1-inch guard from Kaukana, Wisconsin, joins

UMD after back-to-back Fox Valley Association All-Conference seasons along with 6-foot-2inch guard Brandyn Christman of Rice Lake, Wisconsin and 6-foot-3-inch guard Jake Larkin of Watertown, Wisconsin. St. Paul, Minn. native, 6-foot-7-inch forward Derek Magnuson makes the trip up to Duluth after an allconference season in which he led his Roseville High School squad to its second consecutive North Suburban Conference title. Tartan High School’s Brody Jackson rounds out the freshman class as a 6-foot-8-inch center joining UMD after a trip to the Minnesota State High School tournament in 2013-14. A trio of junior college transfers join the freshman class, starting with 6-foot-3-inch guard Taylor Lavery of Kishwaukee (Ill.) Junior College who earned back-toback All-Arrowhead Conference selections as the team’s leading scorer during his two seasons with the Kougars. Closing out the class is 6-foot-4-inch guard Brendon Pineda-Morales of Phoenix College, averaging 13.8 points last year as the Bears captured the National Junior College Athletics Association National Championship. Marshall and Pineda also earned All-Arizona Community College Athletic Conference (ACCAC) Division II Second Team honors last season, in addition to overall All-ACCAC Honorable Mentions. “I am looking forward to working with each of these players and getting them quickly acclimated into our program,” added Bowen.

THE SCHEDULE The Bulldogs will begin the 201415 season with a pair of measuringstick exhibitions against NCAA I teams Notre Dame and defending NIT Champion Minnesota. The regular season tips off for UMD at the Southwest Baptist Tournament against Lincoln (Mo.) and the host Bearcats Nov. 14-

The Bulldogs were 8-6 against the North division in 2013-14 and will look to improve on that mark next season. trip to defending NSIC Champion Minnesota State on Jan. 3. The Bulldogs will host Winona State a month later. Bowen’s squad reached the NSIC Tournament last season, with Upper Iowa coming from behind to knock off UMD, and the Bulldogs will look for revenge against the Peacocks on Feb. 6 at Romano Gym. Expectations will be very different for UMD as the team brings a much more veteran-laden squad to the court than a season ago. A cast of four seniors, four junior transfers, an experienced sophomore class, and several high school stand-outs will look to continue the building that Bowen has started in his first two seasons.

QUICK FACTS

ROMANO GYMNASIUM

Venerable Romano Gymnasium has been the home of Bulldog basketball for 59 years and, since the on-campus facility opened in 1953-54, UMD has parlayed Romano's friendly confines into 581 victories and a .745 winning percentage. The Bulldogs have finished with a winning record in 53 of their previous 59 seasons of play at Romano Gymnasium, going unbeaten on six occasions: 1957-58, 196263, 1981-82, 1987-88, 1989-90, 1990-91. In the 1980s and 1990s, Romano

Gymnasium housed one of the most dominating home-court runs in college basketball history as UMD rolled up a 232-42 mark that included a school-record 41-game home winning streak from Jan. 14, 1989 through Nov. 23, 1991. The 2,759-seat facility underwent an extensive $2 million face-lift following the 1986-87 season and has had numerous minor renovations since then. In 1987, It was officially renamed in honor of the late Ralph Romano, UMD's Director of Intercollegiate Athletics from 1969 to 1983.

MATT BOWEN

@CoachMattBowen

Head Coach, Third Season

• 2011-12 NSIC Coach of the Year

Matt Bowen, one of three active coaches in the NSIC with a league championship on his resume, joined the Bulldogs in 2012 after a successful six-season stint at conference rival Bemidji State University. Bowen, just the Bulldogs’ third head coach since the 1984-85 season, succeeded Gary Holquist, who stepped down in April of 2012 after 14 seasons to take over as UMD’s Athletic Development Director. Bowen completed his sixth -- and most productive year -- at the Bemidji State head coaching helm in 2011-12. That’s when he guided the Beavers to a 22-9 overall record (setting a school record for wins in a season), the NSIC regular season championship (after they were predicted to finish seventh in the NSIC preseason coaches poll) and their second NCAA II playoff berth in the team’s 91-year history. In addition to receiving votes in the NABC Coaches Poll for the first team ever and attaining its highest regional ranking, Bowen’s Beavers also produced the 2011-12 NSIC and NCAA Division II Player of the Year in James Ellisor. Bowen, who was 64-102 with the Beavers, took over a Bemidji State program that had gone through three head coaches in the six-year span before his arrival in 2006. After winning just five games in his inaugural season, the Beavers increased their win total in all but one year after that -- culminating with the historic 2011-12 campaign. Prior to his appointment in Bemidji, Bowen spent 15 years on the staffs of three NCAA I institutions, working under the likes of Homer Drew (Valparaiso University), Gene Bartow (University of Alabama-

Birmingham) and Bob Knight (Indiana University). He served a fouryear stint as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Valparaiso from 2002-06 and helped the Crusaders to two Mid-Continent Conference titles and one berth each in the NCAA (2004) and NIT (2003) tournaments. Bowen spent the previous seven years (19952002) in an assistant coaching role at Alabama-Birmingham, where the Blazers secured a pair of berths in the NIT tournament, one Conference USA National Division championship and one NCAA Tournament appearance. As an undergraduate, Bowen attended Indiana University and was employed for five seasons as the men’s basketball team manager. He was part of two Big Ten championship clubs and four NCAA Tournament qualifiers (including the 1992 Hoosiers, who advanced to the Final Four). A native of River Falls, Wis., Bowen graduated from Indiana University in 1995 with a Bachelor of Science degree in health, physical education and recreation and earned a Master’s degree in health education from Alabama-Birmingham four years later. His father, Rick, was the head men’s basketball coach at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls from 1986-2006 and retired as that school’s athletic director in 2010. At UMD, Bowen’s teams have seen steady improvement in the past two seasons, and have produced three All-NSIC selections, including Jordan Reetz (’14) last season and senior Brett Ervin (‘15) during the 2012-13 season. Bowen’s 2013-14 squad far exceeded preseason expectations as the Bulldogs knocked off Bowen and his wife, Ashli, have two daughters - McKenzi (10) and Addison (5).

ON COACH BOWEN BOB KNIGHT, ESPN ANALYST & FORMER HEAD COACH (TEXAS TECH, INDIANA, ARMY): “Matt Bowen is a young coach with a very good basketball background. He did a tremendous job at Indiana. The people and programs he has been with since those days say he has done an outstanding job with them as well. Clearly, Matt is well prepared for this opportunity and he’s excited for the chance to coach at [UMD]. It’s a great setting for him.” ANDY KENNEDY, HEAD COACH (UNIVERSITY OF MISSISSIPPI): “I had the opportunity to work with Matt when we were much younger coaches at UAB and I could see first hand that he had the makings of a very good head coach. He has a great work ethic and knowledge of the game. He, like I, have been very fortunate to have been around quality teachers and program builders in Coach Knight and Gene Bartow. I am sure he’s going to bring that same approach to this situation at UMD.” MURRY BARTOW, HEAD COACH (EAST TENNESSEE STATE UNIVERSITY) “UMD is fortunate to get a person of Matt’s character and coaching ability. He comes from a great basketball family and has had good training at UAB and Valparaiso. I can say that when he was with me at UAB he was an outstanding coach on the floor, he was incredibly knowledgeable and he had a great work ethic. I think he has an incredibly bright future in the game.” UMDBULLDOGS.COM

KEVIN WILLIAMSON

@K_Will_Bulldogs

Assistant Coach, Third Season Kevin Williamson has been a part of head coach Matt Bowen’s coaching staff for the past four seasons, first at Bemidji State and for the past two seasons at UMD. “By being with me the past [four] years, Kevin has a firm grasp of what I want to do here and how I want to do it,” said Bowen. “He certainly was integral in the success we had at Bemidji (which included an outright Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference title last season) and opened up some new recruiting avenues nationally for us up there -- particularly on the west coast. As a coach, he relates extremely well with the players, having played himself not so long ago at the collegiate level.” During his tenure on Bowen’s staff, Williamson has helped to recruit and produce eight All-NSIC selections, most recently UMD’s Jordan Reetz (‘14), as well as NCAA II National Player of the Year, Central Region Player of the Year, and NSIC Player of the Year James Ellisor and NSIC Newcomer of the Year Dermaine Crockrell at Bemidji State. Before joining Bowen in Bemidji, Williamson served as an assistant coach at Glendale Community College (Phoenix, Ariz.). Before that, he was employed as a physical education teacher and boy’s basketball coach at Cathedral Catholic High School, where, during his one season of service, guided the Dons to a 17-14 overall record and a spot in the 2009 San Diego Section Division III title game. Williamson’s prep head coaching resume also includes a one-year stint (2007-08) at Kofa High

School in Yuma, Ariz. Under his watch, the Kings set a school singleseason record for wins, going 21-11 on the year, captured the Gila Valley Region championship and gained a Arizona 5A II State Tournament semifinal round berth -- the first ever by any Yuma public high school. For his efforts, Williamson was chosen the Gila Valley Region Coach of the Year. A native of San Diego, Calif., Williamson was a two-sport athlete at the University of Great Falls (Mont.) from 2005-07, competing in both basketball and golf. As a senior while playing for head coach Steven Silsby, he secured National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Academic All-American honors and in addition to qualifying for the Frontier Conference All-Academic Team for a second time. After graduating from Sedona Rock High School (Ariz.) in 2003, Williamson attended Arizona State University, but sat out his two years with the Sun Devil basketball program while nursing a torn ACL. In 200405, under then-head coach Rob Evans, ASU posted a 18-12 record and were part of the NIT Tournament field. Williamson earned a B.A. degree in secondary education (physical education and health) from the U. of Great Falls in 2007 and completed his Master’s degree in sports studies from Bemidji State. His father, Craig, was the head boy’s basketball coach at Sedona High School during Kevin’s senior year, and his brother, Kyle, is currently the assistant boy’s basketball coach at Rancho Bernardo High School in San Diego.

BRYCE TESDAHL

@CoachTesdahl

Graduate Assistant Coach, Second Season Bryce Tesdahl begins his first season as a graduate assistant coach under first-year UMD head coach Matt Bowen. Tesdahl will join full-time assistant Kevin Williamson and volunteer assistant coach Rick Bowen on the Bulldog Bench. Tesdahl wrapped up a four-year playing career at Bemidji State under coach Bowen last winter, graduating as the all-time leader in career assists at both BSU and in the NSIC. As a senior in 2011-12, Tesdahl was one of the leaders on a Beaver team that won the NSIC on the heels of a 22-win regular season. A four-year starter with Crosby-Ironton as a prep. He is completing his physical education degree from Bemidji State during the fall semester, and will enter the graduate program at UMD beginning in the spring.

JAKE SCHALOW

@JakeSchalow

Graduate Assistant Coach, First Season Head coach Matt Bowen adds another former recruit from his days at Bemidji State University to his coaching staff in 201415. Jake Schalow, who spent his entire playing career at BSU, was recruited by Bowen out of Kaukana High School before the 2010-11 season. Schalow played in 108 games including 35 starts, putting together his most impressive season last year with 13.1 points per game while averaging over 34 minutes in 27 starts for the Beavers. In addition to joining the Bulldog coaching staff, Schalow will be finishing his degree for teaching physical education this semester as he completes his student teaching requirement at Hermantown High School. Schalow’s younger brother, Kyle, is a freshman for the Bulldogs this season.

Bowen came to UWRF in 1986 following five years as a Wisconsin Badger assistant coach where he served on the staff with current Badger Coach Bo Ryan. He previously was an assistant coach at Ball State University, working under Coach Steve Yoder at both institutions. Bowen currently is seventh all-time in the WIAC win column. His 259 victories at River Falls put him first all-time in Falcon victories. The 2003-04 season ended 54 years of Falcon basketball frustration when the Falcons hit the 20-win mark for the first time since the 1950 6

season and brought a WIAC championship home to the campus and the city of River Falls. He earned the WIAC basketball Coach of the Year award and his peers also selected him as the NABC West Region Coach of the Year. In 2006-07 the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) awarded Bowen with the National Service Award for his contributions to Division III basketball. He is currently the NABC’s national chair of the Division III All-American Committee. For his extensive service and dedication to basketball in the state of Wisconsin, Bowen was inducted into the Wisconsin Basketball Hall of Fame by the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association in October 2009. Bowen graduated from Indiana University in 1966. He served the Hoosiers as a student-manager under two-time National Champion Coach Branch McCracken. Bowen earned a Masters degree from St. Francis in 1971 and served in the United States Army as a combat medic from 1967-69 with service in Vietnam from December of 1967 to December of 1968. For his actions in Vietnam he was awarded a Bronze Star. Rick and his wife Sandy met as students while at Indiana University. They have been married for 45 years and have two sons, Matt and Mike. Sandy is retired after teaching cell biology and botany at River Falls High School.

BULLDOGS & THE NBA

32

The NBA took notice of two student-athletes who starred at Minnesota Duluth in very different generations: Jay Guidinger and Bill Mattson. From Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Guidinger came to UMD in 1987 and promptly embarked on a trip toward stardom. He started all 126 games during his UMD tenure, establishing University records for points (1,953), rebounds (1,095) and blocked shots (195). Guidinger became the first individual to be named NSIC Player of the Year in three straight seasons and made his professional debut with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 1992, serving as the primary backup for oft-injured Cavaliers standout Brad Daugherty. The assignment led to semi-regular playing time for Guidinger, who played two seasons in Cleveland before retiring to pursue a business career.

GUIDINGER

MATTSON

Mattson, a master of the hook shot, was a Northern Minnesota legend who came to UMD in 1958 following a brilliant high school career at Virginia (Minn.) High School. As a freshman, Mattson led the Bulldogs in scoring with a 15.8 points-per-game average. He also led the team in scoring as a sophomore and as a senior. By the conclusion of his four-year UMD career Mattson had accumulated 1,617 points, a mark that currently stands sixth on the University’s all-time points list. Following his senior season, Mattson was selected by the Los Angeles Lakers with the 77th pick overall in the 1962 NBA Draft. Mattson is the only Bulldog to ever be drafted.
