James s. malosky stadium

Northern Minnesota’s premier outdoor athletic venue, James S. Malosky Stadium has been the home of Bulldog soccer for all 20 seasons since the program’s inception in 1994. The University of Minnesota Duluth’s advantage on its home turf is well known. In 148 lifetime appearances, the Bulldogs have posted a 102-36-10 overall record (good for a .723 winning percentage) at the complex named after legendary Bulldog football head coach Jim Malosky. UMD has also had three

4

perfect home seasons (10-0 in 1995, 7-0 in 1998 and 8-0 in 2009) and only two losing records (1994, 2005) on its own turf. Five summers ago, a $6.5 million, fourlevel structure, which houses a concession area, suites and press facilities, was added to the grandstand. In 2004, the playing surface was replaced with synthetic grass (A-Turf). , and this year, the Bulldogs added a brand new 22-foot-by-12-foot video scoreboard, a project funded by an anonymous donor and dedicated

to “walk-on” athletes. Malosky Stadium is also home to the Bulldogs football team and the facility is equipped with an eight-lane allweather track for track and field. In addition to housing the football, women’s soccer, and track and field Bulldogs, the 4,500-seat Malosky Stadium also hosts a number of high school and junior college football, soccer and track events throughout the year as well as various UMD intramural activities.

NSIC Founded in 1932, what is now known as the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference has enjoyed a varied but successful existence in the Upper Midwest region it calls home. In the spring of 1992, the NSIC was formed by merging the Northern Intercollegiate Conference (men), and the women’s Northern Sun Conference, which had existed since 1979. The NSIC is currently made up of institutions from Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota. During the 2008-09 season, the NSIC expanded to a 14-team league with the addition of Augustana College, the University of Minnesota Duluth, Minnesota State UniversityMankato and St. Cloud State University. Minot State University and the University of Sioux Falls will compete as members of the NSIC for the first time in 2012, bringing the conference to a total of 16 teams. Since the league’s inception, various institutions have competed in the NSIC. Bemidji State University, Minnesota State University Moorhead and Winona State University are charter members and have remained in the conference for its entire 80-year history. Minnesota State University,Mankato and St. Cloud State were also charter members, but left the league in 1981 (MSU departed in 1969 only to return eight years later). UMD, which left and rejoined the league on two occasions, was also an original member. Other current league participants joined in later years: Southwest Minnesota State University in 1969; Northern State University in 1978; Wayne State (Neb.) College in 1998; Concordia University-St.

Coaches & staff 1997 NSIC Coach of the Year

Greg Cane Head Coach, 20

th

Season

Few collegiate coaches in any sport can claim to have literally built his or her squad from the ground up. University of Minnesota Duluth head coach Greg Cane has been t h e r e f o r eve r y single step of the Bulldogs’ transition from club-level to the NCAA Division II ranks and then a perennial Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference contender. Cane officially became the first head soccer coach in Bulldog history in 1994, and has paced the sideline for each of the team’s 347 matches during the program’s 20-year existence. During that time, the Duluth native has won at a .631 clip, piling up an overall record of 203-112-32. Following a debut season that produced a 2-4-1 overall record, UMD went on to post double-digit win totals every year from 19952003 under Cane. The Bulldogs joined the upstart NSIC in 1996 and claimed five regular season titles in the conference’s first eight

years of existence, locking down league crowns in 1997, 1998, 2001-03. Cane has twice led UMD to unblemished conference marks (4-0 in 1997 and 8-0 in 2003), both times being named NSIC Coach of the Year. In 13 seasons of NSIC competition (the Bulldogs spent four seasons in the now-defunct North Central Conference from 2004-07) Cane has come away with at least a share of the league title five times and boasts five conference tournament titles (1997, 1998, 2001, 2003, 2009). A big step on UMD’s road to establishing a legitimate program occurred in 1999, when Cane guided the Bulldogs to their first-ever national ranking. One year later, UMD set a team record with 17 wins and would be ranked as high as eighth nationally en route to capturing the program’s initial NCAA Tournament berth. Nearly a decade after cracking the tourney field for the first time, Cane administered a 10-game turnaround -- the second-largest improvement in the nation that season -- rolling up an overall mark of 17-3-2 in 2009 as the Bulldogs returned to the national tournament for the second time ever. a 2-0 shutout of league-rival Minnesota StateMankato Nov. 13, 2009 in Denver, Colo. For a three-year period, Cane doubled as the head coach of UMD women’s tennis starting in 1995. Under the watch of Cane -- UMD’s longest tenured head coach in any sport -- the Bulldogs produced a 30-15 overall record and won three straight NSIC titles. In his first season, UMD set a single-season record for victories and winning percentage with a 15-2 mark as the Bulldogs made their first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional. For his efforts, Cane was named the 1995 NSIC Coach of the Year. Following his graduation from Duluth’s Cathedral High School, Cane played varsity soccer for three seasons at the College of St. Scholastica. After graduating from CSS in 1983 with bachelor’s degrees in both secondary education and history, he remained at his alma mater as the head coach of the men’s soccer varsity team. In his nine years with the Saints, Cane rolled up a 106-53-12 mark while winning two National Small Colleges Athletic Association National Championships and five NAIA District 12 titles. The 1988 NSCAA Coach of the Year Award recipient averaged 12 wins per campaign with CSS and endured just one losing season. Cane later played an integral role in establishing the St. Scholastica women’s soccer program in 1990 and posted an overall mark of 15-35-2 as the team’s head coach from 1990-93. In September 2013, Cane will be inducted into the St. Scholastica Athletic Hall of Fame. Cane lives in Duluth with his wife, Patti. Their daughter, Amanda, is a 2011 graduate of St. Scholastica.

Season

A name certainly familiar to those in the Duluth area soccer circles, Kelly GrgasWheeler will embark on her tenth season as a Bulldog assistant coach in 2013. The longest-serving UMD assistant in program history, Grgas-Wheeler joined the Bulldog staff in 2004 with four years of previous high-level collegiate coaching experience tucked under her belt. That included a two-season assistant stint at NCAA Division-I University of Texas El Paso. While in El Paso, she helped mold the Miners into one of the most potent offensive clubs in the nation (UTEP led the nation in goals scored in 2002). In addition to duties behind the bench, her responsibilities with the Miners also consisted of scheduling, game management and recruiting. Before accepting the UTEP post, Grgas-Wheeler was an assistant coach at Cochise College (Ariz.) for two years. She also served as an assistant coach at her alma mater, Ottawa (Kan.) University, in 1999 after completing a three-year soccer career at

ST

the institution and graduating with a bachelor’s degree in English. While in Ottawa, she served as the Ottawa Middle School head girl’s soccer coach in 2000. As a forward at Ottawa, Grgas-Wheeler was a three-time All-Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) First Team selection (199698). A two-year captain, she was voted the team’s Most Valuable Player three times while rewriting the school’s record books. She left Ottawa owning all-time marks for goals, assists, and points and still owns the No. 3 mark for assists in a season (10 in 1997) and the eight spot for points in a single season (32 in 1997). Grgas-Wheeler was also a four-year letterwinner for the Braves on the basketball court. Grgas-Wheeler received her NSCAA National Diploma in June of 2007. Locally, she has spent the last 12 summers in the Duluth area as a Gitchi Gummi Club soccer coach. She has led a pair of club teams to the MYSA state tournament, claiming a U-13 state title in 2003 and guiding a second youth squad to the state tournament in 2010. Grgas-Wheeler is a graduate of Duluth East High School and also serves as the women’s hockey sports information director at UMD, a position she has held for each of the past six seasons.

Season

Kelsey Gratz joins the Bulldog coaching staff after finishing up a fouryear playing career at UMD in 2012. Gratz finished her UMD career with five goals and five assists (15 points) with 66 games under her belt as a midfielder and a defender. As a player, Gratz received NSIC AllAcademic Team honors in both her junior and senior seasons. Additionally, she was named an All-NSIC Honorable Mention in 2011. A 2009 graduate of Eagan high school in Minnesota, Gratz is continuing her academic career at UMD in pursuit of an exercise science degree and hopes to attend nursing school. This summer, she participated in a medical internship which brought her to Africa.

Season Preview 2013 NSIC Preseason Coaches’ Poll Rank School (First Place Votes)

The University of Minnesota Duluth soccer team snuck into the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference tournament with a five-match undefeated streak to close the 2012 regular season, but tabbed as the number-five team in the NSIC Preseason Coaches Poll, the 2013 Bulldogs find themselves with greater expectations as a top contender in the league. Coach Greg Cane returns eight starters from the 2012 squad that finished 8-7-3, led by it senior team captain, forward Dani Potter. Potter finished second on the team in scoring last season with five goals and eight assists (18 points), including two game-winners. Fellow seniors Sally Stromme, Emily Jenson, and Kelsey Woodland will also contribute as leaders of a team with 14 underclassmen. The junior class features six of the Bulldogs’ returning starters, with none more notable than 2013 NSCAA AllCentral Region selection, forward Maureen Stormont. Stormont paced UMD in 2012 with 24 points and 11 goals – a mark that topped the NSIC. A trio of junior midfielders in Jennifer Smith, Hannah Keil, and Kelli Klun also return to the starting line-up. They finished third, fourth, and fifth in scoring, respectively, for last year’s campaign, playing in all 18 games and missing just two starts among the three. Sophomores Leah Nesheim and Kate McMahon also saw time on the Bulldogs’

14

front line in 2012 and will look to contribute more this season. Offense was at a premium for the Bulldogs in 2012, with UMD finishing fourth in the conference in shots at 18 per game, second in points (6.39 per game), and sixth in goals. On the defensive side, juniors Riley Allen and Megan Helberg return after starting every game last season in front of sophomore goalkeeper Marissa Rosa. Junior defender Ana Zdechlik also returns after playing in 16 games for the UMD in 2012. The Bulldogs allowed just 100 shots, and 69 on goal, compared to 166 (132 SOG) for UMD’s offense. Rosa took over starting duties halfway through her freshman season, posting a 7-4-2 overall record and 1.66 GAA with 48 saves. She shut out three opponents, all in conference. Her experience as a first-year player will no doubt help her as she finds herself firmly ensconced in a starting role. The Bulldogs will trend younger on their bench, as Coach Cane returns five sophomores and adds nine first-year players to the roster. The 2013 additions include five forwards, three midfielders, and a goalkeeper. First-year forwards Megan Burditt, Jenna St. Germain, Kailey

Beatt, Kaleigh Solheim, and Taylor Johnson will compete for time on the front line, while Marissa Ganske, Maddie Barr, and Nicole Becker are slated to contribute in the midfield. Goalkeeper Jordan Melby will take over as the primary back-up to Rosa in her freshman year. The Bulldogs kick off the season at home against non-conference foe Northern Michigan on Sept. 5. UMD will open NSIC play on the road Sept. 15 at St. Cloud State, and take on preseason conference favorite Winona State on Sept. 22 in Duluth. The road will not be easy for the Bulldogs as they evolve from pesky underdog to one of the favorites in the NSIC, but an improving defense and a strong returning offense should lead them on the path to success.
