Head Coach Bob Rients has handed captaincy duty to a trio of seniors, including a pair that have been with the program for four seasons. Utility man John Meyer, catcher Beau Goff, and submaring reliever Michael Stocke. Stocke, a native of the Twin Ports and graduate of Hermantown High School, tossed 12.1 relief innings for the Bulldogs to the tune of a 3.65 ERA in his career, returns alongside younger brother, sophomore Kevin Stocke, a lefty reliever who tossed 15.0 innings with a 1.80 ERA in 2014. Goff, who transferred to UMD prior to the 2014 campaign from Madison Area Technical College, appeared in 35 of UMD’s 41 games, all but two as a catcher, batting .355/.364/.456 with two home runs while also guiding the young pitching staff from behind the plate. In the summer season, Goff tossed 4.0 innings of witless ball for the Duluth Huskies of the Northwoods League. The last captain, Meyer, has spent time all around the diamond for

UMD including on the mound, appeared in 18 games as an outfielder and designated hitter last season, batting .250/.311/.411 averaging almost a run created per game (seven scored, nine driven in). Right-hander Wesley Mleziva is the second pitcher in the senior class, making six appearances for the Bulldogs last season, striking out 20 in 23.2 innings, with a pair of catchers - Tyler Stein and Joe Balestreri - rounding out the senior class. Stein, and sophomore Matt Vogt, were voted the team’s most improved players a season ago. Stein cracked the line-up in 15 games for UMD last season, while Vogt played in 36 games including 30 starts, batting .280/.342/.439 with 12 extra-base hits, 13 runs scored, and 21 runs batted in on the year. The Bulldogs’ starting infield should be solidified entering the season, led by 2013 Daktronics All-America selection and NSIC Player of the Year, junior first baseman Alex Wojciechowski, with juniors Jimmy Heck and Kyle Comer, and sophomore Brian Pierce. Heck started slow but came on to hit .293/.383/.405 for UMD a season ago, while Comer started out with an MVP-like performer but then came down just a bit, finishing with a team-best .331/.429/.551 batting line. Wojciechowski’s 2014 performance could have been considered a sophomore slump compared to his All-American freshman campaign, but he still launched three long balls while hitting .315/.407/.473 a year ago. Pierce played in 24 games including 19 starts, hitting .286/.313/.381, during his initial campaign. He closed out the regular season going 3-for5 with a triple, four RBIS, and a run scored against the University of Minnesota-Crookston. While UMD graduated a pair of outfielders from the starting line-up, they do return, along with Vogt and Meyer, sophomore Grant Farley who appeared in 23 games including 20 starts as an outfielder and designated hitter. Farley hit .306/.419/.581 on the season, scoring 17 runs and driving in 12. He also made seven appearances on the mound, tossing 11.1 innings with a 1.59 ERA. Sophomore infielder Kyle Hoffman appeared all over the diamond in 24 games, including 19 starts, batting .286/.313/.381 with a pair of doubles and two triples on the year. On the mound, UMD will once again be led by junior southpaw Bo Hellquist, who posted a 2.82 ERA in 51.0 innings but felt the bad luck of a lack of run support to finish just 4-4 on the season. In addition, Hellquist posted a 2.67 K/ BB ratio and .210 batting average allowed. He appeared in 21 games for the Duluth Huskies

The University of Minnesota Duluth returns to the diamond late next month with 12 freshmen and a pair of junior college transfers joining a group of eight experienced sophomores and 15 upperclassmen who caused plenty of excitement for the Bulldogs a season ago. UMD, which finished 18-23 overall and 14-17 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference after spending the entirety of its schedule on the road and neutral sties due to wet conditions at Bulldog Park. While the team is optimistic about conditions for the upcoming season, the team has a new back-up plan in newly renovated Wade Stadium in west Duluth.

bo hellquist ’16 last summer, striking out 18 in 27.2 innings. For the rest of UMD’s staff, the team may see some addition by subtraction. While the team posted a 5.35 ERA on the year, the returning arms tossed 200 innings to a 4.14 ERA. That alone moves the Bulldogs from the 10th-best team in the NSIC to the fifth-best in terms of earned run average. Among returners, junior Matt Mattiacci (4.22 ERA) and sophomores Marco Lucarelli (3.60) and Colton Sinning (3.55) had the most success on the bump, mostly out of the bullpen.

fresh arms, young and old Joining UMD this season are nine pitchers, highlighted by junior college transfer Austin Vaske, who tossed 12.0 innings in five appearances including a pair of starts for Iowa Central Community College last season. The other eight - split equally as four left-handers and four-right handers in the freshman class includes Minnesota natives Jalen Busker, Nick Dorfman, Marcus Fredrickson, Tommy Hanson, Jonny Houston, Justin Kunkel, and Joe Lewis, as well as Woodstock, Illinois product Alex Ferguson. Competing for time in the outfield will be junior Austin Vaske, who transferred in from Minnesota State Community College in Fergus Falls, where he hit .385 with 25 RBI in 28 games, collecting 12 steals and scoring 21 runs. Coach Rients also adds a trio of freshman infielders: six-foot-four-inch lefty-hitting first baseman Kyle Schmidt, 6-foot second baseman Nick Pederson, and 6-foot-1-inch shortstop/third baseman Colten DeMorett.

scott hanna 2014 nsic hall of fame inductee Scott “Honey Bear” Hanna is a name many would recognize on the University of Minnesota Duluth campus and in the city of Duluth. Hanna had the longest tenure in UMD athletic history when he retired after 44 years of service as a player, coach and/or staff member. Hanna launched a 27-year head baseball coaching career with the Bulldogs in 1979 and skippered UMD to a 550-357-3 overall record (a .606 winning percentage), four NSIC regular season titles (1992, 1993, 1999, and 2003), one NCAA II Regional berth (2003) and two NAIA Area 4 playoff appearances (1990 and 1991). Hanna helped produce four Major League Baseball draft picks, eight professional players, seven NCAA II All-Central Region selections and one American Baseball Coaches Association Division II All-American. Twice he earned NSIC Coach of the Year recognition (1999 and 2003) after was promoted to the head coach after a five-year assistant coaching stint (1973-78) under Al Holland. Hanna took over as UMD’s chief equipment manager in 1978 and also spent 23 seasons as an assistant coach with the football Bulldogs. On the gridiron, Hanna lettered four years, two as a starter, and was the recipient of UMD’s Outstanding Lineman Award and earned allconference honors in 1972. Hanna was a regular in the Bulldog lineup during the school’s first two seasons of varsity baseball and has his namesake on the Scott “H.B.” Hanna Baseball Scholarship at UMD. He was also inducted into the UMD Athletic Hall of Fame in 2011. Hanna is a long-time member of the Normanna Volunteer Fire Department and has spent the past 32 years umpiring and officiating local high school baseball, softball and football. He has also volunteered heavily in the Operation One Voice program (which benefits U.S. Special Forces members and their families). Hanna, a Duluth Central High School graduate, and his wife Donna, a UMD softball alum, have raised four sons, Kelly, Ryan, Thomas and John and have five grandchildren.
