NO. 20 BULLDOGS GET BACK TO WORK WITH WEEKEND WCHA SET AT NEBRASKA OMAHA THE SERIES: After a one-week respite, the University of Minnesota Duluth will return to the ice this Saturday and Sunday (Nov. 10-11) when the Bulldogs pay a visit to Omaha, Neb. for two-game Western Collegiate Hockey Association series with the University of Nebraska Omaha. The puck drops at 7:07 p.m. Saturday and 2:07 p.m. the following day at the CenturyLink Center (15,959).

THE RECORDS: The Bulldogs are 2-3-1 overall this season and 0-1-1 in WCHA play while the Mavericks will come into the weekend sporting a 4-3-1 mark in all games and a 2-1-1 league mark.

Both ends of this weekend’s series in Omaha will be videostreammed as well and can be viewed for a fee at: www.americaonesports.com THE COACH: The runnerup for the 2010-11 Spencer Penrose Award (American Hockey Coaches Association NCAA Division I Coach of the Year) and recipient of that honor in 2003-04, Scott Sandelin is in his 13th season behind the UMD bench where he has compiled a 219-213-59 overall record -- including a 97-53-22 mark (a .628 winning percentage) since the 2008-09 opener. Besides capturing the school’s first NCAA championship two years ago and rolling up the team’s best overall record in 19 years (26-106) that same winter, the Bulldogs have posted four consecutive 22-win seasons, and advanced to four NCAA tournaments (2004, 2009, 2011 and 2012), two Frozen Fours (2004 and 2011) and seven of the past 10 WCHA Final Five playoff events. During the course of the 2011-12 season, his troops set a club record by going unbeaten in 17 straight games and were ranked first in both major weekly polls (USCHO. com and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine for a program-best nine consecutive weeks. together a school-record six-game postseason winning streak before it fell to Miami University 2-1 in the NCAA West Regional final. Nine years ago, Sandelin, 48, turned UMD into a NCAA Frozen Four participant for the first time in nearly a generation, marshaling his troops to their most victories (they were 28-13-4 overall) and highest WCHA finish (second place on a 19-7-2 mark) since 1992-93. For his efforts, the Hibbing, Minn., native was chosen the WCHA Coach of the Year as well as the national coach of the year by both insidecollegehockey.com and uscho.com. In 2002-03, Sandelin’s Bulldogs went 22-15-5 overall and captured fifth place in the WCHA with a 14-10-4 mark while experiencing the greatest one-season turnaround of any league club that winter. One year earlier, he guided UMD to a 13-24-1 record in all games -- nearly doubling the number of victories from the previous season (7-28-4). Sandelin officially signed on as a member of the Bulldog staff on March 31, 2000 following six years of assistant coaching deployment at North Dakota. Prior to joining the Fighting Sioux (who won two NCAA titles during his tenure), Sandelin spent the 1993-94 season as the head coach of the Fargo-Moorhead Junior Kings of the Junior Elite Hockey League after working in that same capacity (and doubling as general manager) the previous winter with the American Hockey Association’s Fargo-Moorhead Express. He capped off his four-year playing career at North Dakota in 1985-86 by being named one of 10 finalists for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award. An All-WCHA first team pick and an All-American second team selection as a senior, Sandelin went on to play seven years of professional hockey, which included National Hockey League stints with the Montreal Canadiens (1986-88), Philadelphia Flyers (1990-91) and Minnesota North Stars (199192). Sandelin, one of just two current WCHA coaches to do time in the NHL, was the Montreal Canadiens’ second-round pick in the 1982 NHL draft (40th choice overall). He served as Team USA’s head coach at the 2005 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championships, directing that club to a fourth-place finish, and was an assistant coach for the U.S. at that same event last winter.

Dean Blais (University of Minnesota, 1973) is in his fourth season of head coaching activity with the Mavericks and has a 59-53-15 record to show for it. Blais served in that same capacity for 10 years (1994-2004) at North Dakota where his Fighting Sioux captured two NCAA championships (1996-97 and 1999-2000) and five WCHA regular season crowns. He is 321-168-46 as a collegiate head coach, which includes a 29-12-2 mark against UMD. During Blais’s first six years at North Dakota, one of his assistant coaches was current Bulldog bench boss Scott Sandelin.

THE SERIES: UMD and UNO will collide for just the 10th time ever this Saturday night. The Bulldogs hold a 6-30 lead in the all-time series, which began on Dec. 5, 1997 at the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center, and traded wins with the Mavericks in the two clubs’ only two confrontations one year ago (Jan. 13-14, 2012). UMD took the opener in that series 6-2 before host UNO rebounded with a 3-1 victory the ensuing night, putting the clamps on the Bulldogs’ school-record and nation-leading 17-game unbeaten streak. UMD is 3-2-0 lifetime in Omaha and 1-1-0 at the CenturyLink Center.

Lifetime Record vs. Nebraska Omaha: 3-2-0

LAST WEEKEND: The Bulldogs have been idle since launching their 48th, and final, season of WCHA play two weekends ago with a pair of outings against the University Wisconsin. UMD skated out of AMSOIL Arena with just one point, coming up empty in a 2-0 setback on Oct. 26 before tying the Badgers 2-2 in the rematch (and failing to hold on to a 2-0 third-period lead in the process). Rookie center Tony Cameranesi and senior right winger Keegan Flaherty accounted for the Bulldog goals on the weekend.

UNO posted it first series sweep in a little over a year, toppling Michigan Tech University 2-1 and 5-3 last Friday and Saturday night in Houghton, Mich.

WCHA FORECAST: In their annual preseason poll, the WCHA head coaches collectively forecasted a sixthplace league finish for UMD in 2012-13. The University of Minnesota (11 first-place votes and 121 points) was tabbed as the team to beat followed by North Dakota (one first-place vote and 110 pts.), the University of Denver (91 pts.), St. Cloud State University (90 pts.) and Wisconsin (70 pts.). UMD, which garnered

69 points, checked in at No. 5 for the second year in a row in the 94X WCHA Media Poll.

AYE, AYE CAPTAIN: Left winger Cody Danberg has been entrusted with the team captaincy duties for the 69th edition of UMD hockey while a pair of fellow seniors -- right winger Keegan Flaherty and defenseman Drew Olson -- are serving as assistant team captains.

ONE FINAL FLING: UMD, which has been a member of the WCHA since the 1965-66 season, and UNO will join forces with the new eight-team National Collegiate Hockey Conference (which includes UNO) next fall. The Bulldogs and Mavericks will meet for the final two times as WCHA competitors in the 201213 regular season finales on March 8-9 at AMSOIL Arena.

THE PUCK STOPS HERE: Matt McNeely, who manned the Bulldog goal in both bouts with Wisconsin, currently ranks ninth in the nation -- and first among all rookies -- in goals against average with a 1.64 mark while his .935 saves percentage is surpassed by only two other

NCAA freshmen at the moment. The Burnsville, Minn. product has not given up more than two goals in any of this three starts to date.

ONE FOR THE ROAD: Over the past two seasons, UMD has managed to go unbeaten in 16 of its 20 road assignments (11-5-4). It also hasn’t been swept by an opponent outside of Duluth since Feb. 19-20, 2010 when North Dakota turned the trick.

ONE FOR THE ROAD II: In 13 lifetime road appearances, goaltender Aaron Crandall is 7-3-1 with a 2.42 goals against average, a .912 saves percentage and one shut out. That’s a marked difference from the numbers the fourth-year junior and two-time WCHA Scholar-Athlete Award winner has produced at home as a collegian (6-3-0, a 3.29 goals against average, an .864 saves percentage and one shutout in 10 outings). In his last crease activity, Crandall established a career-high for saves by turning aside 36 shots in a 4-1 setback at the University of Notre Dame on Oct. 19.

POWER OUTAGE: After coming into the Wisconsin series owning the nation’s eighth best power play percentage (25.9) and the most man advantage goals (seven), the Bulldogs were blanked by the Badgers in that department, going 0-for-7. That weekend funk has dropped UMD to the No. 19 spot nationally in power play efficiency at 20.6 percent.

TOP ‘DOG: Senior right winger Mike Seidel has picked up at least one point in five of UMD’s six outings thus far (the exception was the 2-0 shutout loss to Wisconsin) and leads the Bulldogs in scoring with three goals and four assists. All three of his goals this season have come on the power play and those three tallies take a backseat nationally only to the four Boston College forward Kevin Hayes has produced.

CONSISTENTLY CONSISTENT: Since Feb. 26, 2010, the Bulldogs have lost two or more games in a row only twice -- when they fell to Notre Dame on Oct. 8, 2011 and to Minnesota (twice) the following weekend and to Alaska-Anchorage and North Dakota (Feb. 4 and Feb. 10, 2012).

OH BROTHER: UMD sophomore left winger Adam Krause’s older brother, Joe, is a sophomore forward at UNO. Adam, the recipient of UMD’s Mike Sertich Most Improved Player Award last winter, has collected three points in 34 outings as a Bulldog. while Joe, who joined the Maverick program midway through the 2011-12, is pointless in 10 career games and has yet to take a shift this season.

MONEY IN THE BANK: Going back to the 2010-11 season opener, UMD is 37-1-4 (15-0-2 last winter and 2-0-1 this year) when taking a lead into the third period with the lone loss coming to Bemidji State

University (3-2 in overtime) at the 2011 WCHA Final Five. During that same stretch, they are a mere 1-182 (0-9-1 in 2011-12 and 0-2-0 this season) when trailing at the second intermission.

JUST A KID: Left winger Austin Farley, the youngest member of the 2012-13 Bulldogs and their topscoring rookie at the moment (one goal, which came on his first collegiate shift in the season opener with Ohio State University, and three assists), will turn 19 this Saturday. Two other first-year Bulldogs -- left winger Austyn Young and center Charlie Sampair -celebrated that same birthday last month.

LET ‘ER RIP: Freshman center Tony Cameranesi paces the Bulldogs in shots on goal with 24 and that 4.0 shots per game average currently ranks third among all WCHA skaters, bettered by only Minnesota junior forward Erik Haula (4.71) and Colorado College senior defenseman Mike Boivin (4.38).

BLANKETY BLANK: UMD hasn’t been shut out on the road during the regular season in almost five years (2-0 vs. Bemidji State on Jan. 5, 2007), but has been blanked on six occasions in Duluth over that same stretch.

BULLDOG BITS: UMD is the most penalized club in the WCHA thus far, averaging 17.7minutes worth of infraction time per night ... The Bulldogs have generated just one shorthanded goal (by right winger Keegan Flaherty at Michigan Tech University on Dec. 2, 2011) since the start of last season, but have also ceded only two shorties of their own with both of those coming in 2011-012 ... Keegan Flaherty has now skated in 87 consecutive games, the longest ironman streak of any active Bulldog while two other seniors -- defenseman Wade Bergman and center Jake Hendrickson -- have both made 71 consecutive appearances since Dec. 30, 2010 ... UMD is 20-11-4 in its 35 lifetime engagements at AMSOIL Arena, which opened its doors for business on Dec. 30, 2010... Senior team captain Cody Danberg, who, because of injuries had played in only one game over the previous two seasons (the 2011-12 opener with Notre Dame at AMSOIL Arena), is the first sixth-year senior to ever play for the Bulldogs The 2012-13 UMD roster is comprised of seven seniors, four juniors, six sophomores and nine freshmen ... The Bulldogs are unbeaten in 36 of their last 40 overtime games (15-4-21; 2-2-6 in 2011-12) stretching back to the start of the 2008-09 season. Among the 2012-13 Bulldogs, only two have an overtime goal to their collegiate credit -- seniors Cody Danberg and Mike Seidel with one each ...
